“The gift is a larger than life mural depicting a gang of cheese-stealing mice,” explains shop-owner, Keith Draper. “The mural will be on the north wall.” Located in the centre of Kaiwaka, the shop is renowned as a retail cheese shop and deli but also acts as a drop-off point for the local food co-op. “Keith has allowed us to use his shop to store goods that we’ve ordered which has been fantastic for us,” says Anna Curnow from the Kaiwaka Food Co-op. “Our produce is dropped off to Keith until we collect it from him a few days later.

He has been doing this for us for years and we wanted to say thank you.” The mural is being painted by local cartoonist, Andy Griffiths, supported by other members of the co-op. “We had a meeting with Keith and he came up with the idea of a group of mice looking longingly into a cheese shop much like a jewellery thief eyes up a jewellery store, so we ran with it.” Andy said. “The next question was ‘great, now who can actually draw it?’ so I put my hand up.”

Academic Counselling Interviews This coming Wednesday, 9th May we will be holding our first Academic Counselling interviews for the year. These interviews are of fifteen minutes duration and take place between 12 noon and 6pm for students in Years 11, 12 and 13. During Term one and the beginning of Term two our students have been working through the Academic Pathway book, with the guidance of their Vertical Form Tutor. A significant part of this process is for each student to set their own academic goals. Parents/caregivers will have the opportunity to have an interview with the child’s Vertical Form Tutor to discuss the goals that have been set and the student’s progress so far this year. This can include any internal NCEA assessments that may have taken place so far this year, their attendance record, and rated assessment completed by both subject teachers and the student. Our academic coaching programme runs through the whanau tutors as the “significant adult”, with support for other staff in the school. Parents and caregivers may make

The votes are in for 2012’s parade of pigs The BNZ’s Dargaville branch was packed last week as hopeful contenders waited for the final verdict on their porcine creations. After weeks of voting, hours of design and no small amount of artistic flair, the 2012 parade of pigs finals were our own small version of the Oscars – though the statuettes were pink rather than gold, and it was tea and biscuits rather than champagne on the red carpet The piggy bank scenes and sculptures crafted by Dargaville businesspeople this year were a riot of colour and creativity, making the judging difficult. But in the end there could be only three winners, each going home with a box of chocolates and a bottle of wine for their efforts, as well as the satisfaction of bringing the ‘top pig’ to market. This year’s team choice award (chosen by the staff at the BNZ) went to the Central Hotel, for their artfully crafted little bartender pig, complete with tiny bottles, glasses and posters on a real wooden bar top. The ‘rich pig’ award — for the entrant who raised the most money for Project Promise — went to Duck Creek garden centre’s resplendent ‘Flora’, while the overall award for the most votes went to Gilmore Brown’s entry — a hard-working piggy bank taking care of business at his own little desk. This year a record number of pigs were entered in the contest, with all money raised going Project Promise, who plan to build a specialist oncology unit in Whangarei. When complete this state of the art hospital will treat cancer patients throughout the north, and a third of the projected three million dollar price tag has now been raised. It has been an Indian summer on the waters of the Kaipara for the past month, and catches reported from down the harbour have been excellent. Gurnard and snapper, trevally and kahawai has been plentiful on many an angler’s table And that includes some great catches by the younger set. The Point Curtis Cruising Club, based in Kaiwaka, recently held a three-day fishing contest which covered the Kaipara Harbour and eastern coastal waters. The the club’s junior section was right up there with the older members when it came to weigh-in time. “The Point Curtis Cruising Club Inc

originated at Point Curtis off Mountain Road, in 1958.” said the club’s secretarytreasurer, Jean Mcleish. “We amalgamated with Klub Kaiwaka, which was based at the Three Furlongs Hotel in Kaiwaka about 10 years ago,merging to become a fishing and hunting club. Hunting includes ducks and pigs. “Our club fishing area is anywhere

north of Auckland on both coasts. We have around 50 members, some as individuals and some as families, and we run fishing contests throughout the year. “The club has just held its annual prizegiving for the heaviest catches of the year and members received prizes and a trophy. Big screen coming to town After more than 30 years movie goers will be able to watch the latest films on the big screen. Work began last weekend on demolishing the interior of the old Dargaville library in Hokianga Road to convert it to a multipurpose auditorium, including a 62seat movie theatre. The project has been three years in the making. “It all began with a public meeting when it was decided that there was absolutely no reason why we can’t have our own movie theatre in town,” says Graeme Ramsey from the Dargaville Community Charitable Cinema Trust. “The core aims of the trust are to establish a facility that will foster community spirit, be self-funding, provide affordable entertainment and promote the arts. The auditorium will be utilised for small performances, debating evenings, even birthday parties. It’s pretty exciting stuff,” adds Graeme. “There has been tremendous support from the community including donations from the ASB Community Trust and Transpower. I would also like to give a special thank you to the Northern Wairoa RSA who have kindly allowed us to name the theatre the Anzac Cinema. It is a very appropriate name as the cinema will be in the War Memorial Hall.” “We need to raise a further $70,000 out of the total cost of $450,000 to purchase equipment for the theatre. There will be additional items we require such as seating for the foyer area and, of course, assistance from volunteers from time to time.” All going to plan the cinema will open on October 31 this year.

Kaipara’s Deputy Mayor, Julie Geange, is critical of what she calls a ‘personal attack based on misinformation’ over the Kaipara District Council’s debt problem With the majority of debt concentrated on the Mangawhai sewage scheme, she said the project was signed off a year before she was elected to council. “For the past few months I have been listening and watching to what is being said out in the community. Until recently it has been opinion and rumour about what council is doing and how bad things are,” said Ms Geange. “Now it is turning into a personal attack based on misinformation. Last weeks Kaipara Lifestyler article, ‘Resignation demand over rates rise’, had the Kaipara Citizens and Ratepayers association president, Ron Manderson, calling for my resignation. “The insinuatation is that those who were responsible for signing off on the Mangawhai Wastewater project should resign. “Well it’s quite easy to do the math on this one. The Mangawhai Wastewater Scheme was signed in 2006 and I was first elected to council in October 2007 — it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out I wasn’t there. As an elected member of council you are part of a continium, where you share the responsiblity for previous decisions made. It is my responsiblity to do the best I can for the district as a whole and sometimes this means making decisions that are not popular. Thinking about fresh water Northland’s rivers and streams need urgent attention. In the 2007 survey, out of 37 streams and rivers monitored, only two were sufficient quality to water stock. Of the 10 bathing sites recently monitored against national standards only one (Lake Taharoa) was rated as very good. Eight were classed as poor or very poor. On the news is the possible extinction of native long fin eels. Fresh water is important for cultural reasons, for our health, the environment and to protect our clean green image. Improving water quality has become a government priority and media coverage is painting Northland as the worst in the country. The blame for this has been pointed at our dairy industry and it is easy to see why. Northland has 985 dairy farms and milks over 250,000 cows. These produce 11 million litres of cow shed effluent alone each day. While many farmers have been investing heavily in effluent disposal there is still significant noncompliance with Regional Council standards. But the picture is more complex than this. The Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment has published a major survey of fresh water in New Zealand looking at the incidence of pathogens, sediment and nutrients — the three key pollutants. Pathogens from human sewerage and/or animal manure can cause health problems in

people and animals. Sediment from erosion clouds our waters, clogs our harbours and gives mangroves a place to establish. In New Zealand more than 200 million tons of soil washes down our rivers every year. The growth of unwanted weeds and algae are signs of a problem with nutrients, particularly nitrogen and phosphorous. But this does not come from dairying alone. Erosion is the main cause of phosphorous. We all need to play a part in fixing our problem. Councils and Fonterra have a role in enforcing regulations and setting standards, particularly if our dairy industry is to expand from its current 17,000 million litres per annum to meet the Fonterra target of 22 billion litres per annum by 2020. Community waste water systems must be adequate for the job. Many in Northland simply are not. More scientific study is needed to identify key areas causing downstream problems and the best means of addressing these. For all of us there are wetlands to preserve, streams to restore and areas to protect. Thankfully there are some groups doing this on our rivers and harbours already. All of this takes time and money. It will require a substantial effort over a long time. Dairying has to up its game as an industry but we all have a part to play.

Although against the tide all the way the smart little boat soon landed us at the Naumai wharf. We proceeded by a good metalled road leading to the main Raupo Road. Soon we reached Mr. Baylys farm where the new Ridd machine is installed. At 4 p.m a ﬁne herd of cows was driven up and a start made under the management of Mr. Laing the company’s expert. Three cows were milked at the same time and all went without a hitch. The machine is very simple with only one pulsator and nothing to get out of order. There is undoubtedly a great future for it in this district.

A moment never forgotten

When Dargaville man Flight Lieutenant Nick Matich climbed aboard his Halifax plane in England bound for Hamburg on the night of 27th September 1943, he would never have imagined the adventures he was about to have. After his plane was shot down that night 100 miles inside Germany, Matich set off to walk home. He made it to the border where he was picked up by Dutch resistance and was to meet many brave people that he would remember his whole life long. Now in 2012, a daughter of one of those underground workers who helped him is living in New Zealand. She recently read a story about Nick in Kaipara Lifestyler and was keen to fill in some more of the story. Danielle Eikenaar-Evers first came to New Zealand to meet a friend in 1988. “Before I left home in Holland, my father called me into his office and showed me half of a bank note that he had. He told me that the other half he gave to a man called Nick Matich, a New Zealand airman. I found Nick in Auckland before he died. I was able to show him a photo of my Mum and Dad and he recognised them and became very emotional. We all did in that room. They were hiding a Jewish family while Nick was there. At least once I think, they took him to another hiding place because Germans were getting too close.” “In October 1944 the Jewish family was betrayed and together with my uncle they were all shot and the

farm burned down. Luckily my family escaped and with my grandparents hid until the war was over.” Asked where the fugitives were hidden and Danielle says sometimes in a nearby forest and sometimes in the basement under the cowshed. She is not sure how long Nick was there but in his book ‘Night after Night’, Max Lambert says it was two months. In 2002 Danielle was able to return to the Matich family a wristwatch that Nick had given to one of the Evers family when he left the farm. On that first trip Danielle stayed in New Zealand for six months and then spent six months in Australia. Later she and her husband with their two young children came back to New Zealand to start Mardeco International Ltd, a wholesale kitchen and architectural hardware business. Danielle adds, “The Nick Matich story has never left my mind, there have been so many coincidences that have happened since those days. Nick and Mary went back to Holland to try and find the people that had helped him. It was hard because they all used a nickname to keep their real names a secret. He found nineteen out of the twenty-one families who had helped him but never saw us again until I found him in 1988. My father and Nick never met again. Perhaps one day I will write our family story.”

Singer’s new venture Dargaville singer and fundraiser, AnnaMarie Cutts, has embarked on a new business venture, one that also involves a long held interest. Anna is an enthusiastic exponent of cross-stitch and she’s opened her own store “Ananya X S” inside Dormavilla in Victoria Street, next to the Hospice Shop. Anna sells a range of cross-stitch supplies including fabrics, threads, kits and charts. “Word’s really getting out that there’s a cross stitch shop in town and people

are so pleased to hear they can get their supplies in Dargaville now instead of having to travel to Whangarei,” said Anna. Her passion for the technique started when she was a little girl “I’ve been doing cross-stitch for 28 years now so I can offer advice to others who are keen to start. Arts and crafts in general are becoming really popular again. It’s fashionable and lots of younger people are picking it up.” As a singer, Anna performs in local

theatre productions. “I can sing a wide range of music from mainstream 60s and 70s right up to modern songs. My passion is really musical theatre, but I can do anything to suit any occasion.” She will be performing at Aratapu Tavern on the 18th May and in a Little Theatre production from the following day. Anna recently lost her hair’ for cancer — when New Zealanders from all walks of life had their heads shaved to raise money for research.

Rural renaissance for time-honoured building method “We are ready,” says Tim Magill of Kaiwaka company Barnbuilders. “Ready to show all of Northland our pole and timber farm buildings — and that’s not all!” For the past 12 years Tim, with wife Minnie, and a long list of staff, friends and family have enjoyed designing and building their rural-style sheds, working their way up to become the biggest such company in Northland. “These are great buildings and the customers like them. We want to let more people know that wood is good for sheds and that we can work out a design and a good price.” Tim says that some of his many customers simply prefer wood over steel, and as many again buy because his building method is very economical. Wood is, after all, a renewable resource, and one which humans have been building with since they first got tired of living in caves. “I may be a bit biased, having served my time as a carpenter and then going into the sawmilling industry,” says Tim, “but it does makes sense to me to build with pine. It is a bonus that Northland pine is respected as the strongest in the country, there is plenty of it and we have contacts who can cut and process it to suit our needs. Wood is warm and natural, and it’s also very strong and durable. Used smartly it’s an economical, attractive and practical way to build strong sheds, while actually reducing carbon emissions!” Carbon isn’t all that’s reduced — Barnbuilders have worked hard to keep costs low for their customers too. Big gains in efficiency have come

with their new expanded workshop, and much work which used to be completed on-site now gets done there, quicker and better — cutting down on travel costs. “Another gain came to us while on away jobs. The buildings cost less when we stay on site. And we build in some great places, (Whangaruru at present). We have a clean and tidy work camp with proper amenities. It’s not always the way we go but it can be a way to save. It nearly halves the building time with less travelling and packing up gear.” Tim remains very hands-on despite the growth of his business, going out on site and getting valuable face to face time with his clients, who often want to customise and tweak designs on the fly. In fact, customisation and design are a big strength for Barnbuilders, who don’t tie down their customers to ‘off the shelf’ plans. “Building farm infrastructure suits us and makes us feel part of that industry,” says Tim. “We gain a lot of design ideas working with those innovative farmers who want a new building to help them work smarter. Long road to full implementation for building laws Despite the change in building laws heralded by the government on the first of March this year it will be a long process getting many builders up to full trade qualified status. The current schedule set out by the government for full upskilling and qualification of all Licensed Building Practitioners aims for a completion date of 2015, leaving those building in the interim in limbo, unsure of the right path to take. Of course, any LBP can undertake the newly classified ‘restricted building work’, but a trade qualification is a stamp of approval not easily achieved, and it rightly remains the benchmark of a builder’s experience in the view of most New Zealanders. After all, it’s one thing to have the paperwork, but another to have put in years of practical work constructing homes in New Zealand conditions — a track record which can be inspected for a degree of surety. For those who wish to avoid any pitfalls and have true peace of mind when building, it’s always best to ask to see the trade qualifications of your builder. By 2015 (if all goes according to schedule) this level of qualification should be universal, but in the meantime it pays to check. Another option — and one which appeals to many — is to deal with a group such as the Certified Builders, who can guarantee trade qualified workmanship through their own peer-driven organisation. Unless a builder is trade qualified they cannot become a member of the Certified Builders

Perfect Mother’s Day eggs benedict The perfect treat for breakfast in bed, this recipe is much easier to get right than café chefs would have you believe! Let the kids help you with some of the easier bits — or perhaps just pouring the orange juice — and surprise Mum with a morning to remember. Top tip — don’t let those extra points disappear when Mum gets up… make sure you don’t leave her all the dishes to wash! Ingredients 8 pieces of bacon — rashers or middle bacon 2 tablespoons of chopped parsley 2 teaspoons of white vinegar 2 English muffins Butter 4 free range eggs (the yolks are nicer!) For the Hollandaise Sauce: 10 Tbsp unsalted butter 3 egg yolks (use a separator — this is the one thing other than pavlova it’s for!) 1 Tbsp lemon juice ½ teaspoon sea salt Method 1. Make that bacon crispy! Remember if this is early morning cooking that a singlet and boxers may not provide adequate protection from sizzling bacon, and that screams can wake mum! 2. While the bacon is cooking, bring a large saucepan two-thirds-filled with water to a boil, then add the vinegar. Bring the water to a boil again, then lower the heat to a simmer. 3. Hollandaise is easy in a blender. Put all the ingredients (except the butter!) in the blender and give them

What’s happening?

The ‘must do’ annual Monster Trailbike Ride at Tangowahine was held recently with more than 350 riders attending from all over the north and as far south as Tauranga

Margaret Bishop, event co-organiser says, “the run/ walk would be a great thing to do on Mother’s Day. It’s lots of fun and it’s healthy!” (photo on right). Entries close 9 May. When it’s fun for the kids you’re after then head for the Friday Frenzy, 5–7pm at the Methodist Church, Awakino Road (photo below). “It runs for three consecutive Fridays and is an opportunity for children to make new friends, have fun in a safe environment and enjoy a full meal,” says Margaret Bishop, co-ordinator of Friday Frenzy. Costs: $10 family or $7 child.

Funds raised from the trail go to the Tangowahine Primary School who organise the event. “It’s really neat how the whole community gets involved,” said event co-ordinator, Jo Rowse. “Around 50 volunteers help each year as bike and road marshals, with registration, the kitchen and even a sausage sizzle at the halfway mark. Everyone comes along to help and has a fun day out.” Located in the Tangowahine Valley, the circuit is the third longest in the North Island. Colin Rowse explains that

‘the track has been adapted over the last few years since the forestry began harvesting trees. ‘We’ve spent a lot of time doing reconnaissance missions finding old original farm tracks in the plantations which means that the ride is more technical now, as you have to weave your way in and out of trees. ‘The circuit also takes you through a few hectares of gums which is really neat when the smell of the eucalyptus hits you after the radiata. The riders relish the experience from this varied terrain’.
