The Commercial Hotel and the Norfolk Court rest home have new owners, as the latest Quotation Value (QV) index showed a rise of 8.6 in Kaipara property values attributed to a migration northwards from Auckland. Chairman of the Dargaville Business forum, Peter Boyd, said that “we have heard and are starting to notice an increase in interest from the Auckland market, looking to invest in the area of commercial property. It’s a step in the right direction to get new investors and we need to keep that momentum up. It brings new energy into town.” John and Linda Wade from Auckland have recently taken over Norfolk Court Home and Hospital. John has a long history of working in health including aged care and working for the Northland District Health Board. They chose to buy a Dargaville business as it’s where their interests lie and it’s in a area they love. “We love Northland, so we were looking for a way to get back up and this provided that opportunity. The main drive is we want to provide a good service for the community and we think we can do that. We’re here for the long haul,” said John. Husband and wife Anne and Calin Grigoreanu became the official owners of the Commercial Hotel last week. The couple, also from Auckland, are looking forward to “getting out of the rat race and having some peace and quiet,” said Anne. For the last five years Anne has been looking after her elderly mother

p Anne Grigoreanu, Pam Kelly and Peter Kelly, the new and former owners in front of the historic Commercial Hotel in Dargaville

and being a grandmother. Calin works at the GAPO recycling centre in Auckland, but is looking for new prospects in Dargaville. Before taking on this project, the couple have hosted international students in their Auckland home, so they look forward to meeting and hosting travellers through the hotel. Anne has family in the area, a connection which drew her to the district. “This building reminds me of my grandmother and my mother. It’s in the north, which is where my father is from.” They plan to keep it as a bed and breakfast, but she

also has new ideas including an open fire pit and renovating a cottage in the back yard. “We are looking forward to something new, that involves people and the community.” Even though they’ll miss the area, former owners, Peter and Anne Kelly said “this building needs someone younger to keep it going. “We want to thank Dargaville for all the support we’ve been given and we hope they carry on supporting [the new owners].”

p The Northland Freewheelers motorhome club met at the Avoca sand yard in Dargaville for their April rally and meet-up. Club marshall Ross Manderson said there were around 28 vans that stayed during the four days. During that time members enjoyed a meal at the Dargaville Bowling Club and some attended the Anzac dawn parade. A highlight for the group was using the old Kauri Hall, which dates back to when Ernest Shackleton’s used the space to build lifeboats for his journey to the South Pole.

Coastguard appeal

u by Anna Harding

u by Joanna Manson

Paralympic medalist Emma Foy recently shook hands with the Prime Minister as she received a ‘Prime Minister’s Athlete Scholarship,’ to go towards her first year tertiary studies.

The North Kaipara Coastguard will be outside Countdown next week as part of their annual May Day appeal and they’ll also be keeping an eye out for new volunteers.

Established in 2000 by High Performance Sport New Zealand, the scholarship programme helps retain talented athletes in their sports and also helps transition athletes into a career, with Emma in the latter section. “The prime minister can’t make it to every scholarship award evening around the country so I was lucky to receive it from him,” she said. Emma is currently in her first year of law at Waikato University. After a lot of thought, she made the difficult decision to stop professional cycling. “After Rio I assessed my situation and various possibilities and this seemed like the best option for me at that time. “I feel very lucky to be able to try something that I have been thinking about for a long time. Law is a demanding course that requires a lot p of class time and effort and has been something that I wanted to wait to do when I could prioritise it and give it my full attention.” “In first year we go in depth into the New Zealand constitution and legal systems, including Maori Law and the Treaty of Waitangi, all of which I had only a very basic level of knowledge so am finding the learnings

Skincare challenge success Skin Image in Paparoa challenged three local ladies with different skin types to take part in a 12 week skin care programme which started in February.

Clinic owner Nina Quan thought about setting herself a personal challenge to help three of her clients rediscover healthy and beautiful skin for free. “For me it was a challenge to bring back these ladies healthy skin in just 12 weeks,” she said. “They told me their concerns and we began weekly treatments. On their part they had to be committed to me, and themselves so that they would adopt a good skin care routine at home.” Paparoa Cafe owner Audrey Waipouri said she “loved every bit of the challenge.” Nina says by completing the challenge the ladies have

now made skin care part of their routine and are now aware of how important it is. “Beautiful, healthy skin is absolutely achievable. People aren’t motivated to do anything if they don’t see change — there are always ways to make your skin healthier.” Nina’s already looking ahead to her next challenge which will involve trialling new beauty technology including a LED Light Therapy mask and an Electroporation machine, and she’s on the lookout for volunteers. Nina offers a free skin health check at Skin Image in Paparoa.

Club code founder, Corinne Callinan moved to the area last year with her 10-year-old daughter, who enjoyed the outdoor lifestyle of their new home but missed the science experiences she had back in Auckland. Using the concept of the already established Aotearoa Club Code, Corinne went about seeking interest in the community via Facebook. “In this digital age, coding capability and computational thinking will provide children with a competitive advantage when they get to high school. At very least, a good working knowledge will help their IT confidence. “Aotearoa Club Code supply the curriculum, and the local club founder simply has to organise a venue, a coding expert and a club management team, so that’s what I decided to do,” she said. After receiving positive feedback her next challenge wasn’t as easy.

“The biggest challenge in a town such as Mangawhai was finding a volunteer with coding skills and though I was initially met with many bricks walls, I decided to proceed in establishing the club regardless,” said Corinne. Before long she was contacted by highly skilled programmer, Pat Bray, who was in the process of relocating from Australia to Mangawhai, as well as senior coding expert Hamish Judson. With support from Mangawhai Beach School principal, Aaron Kemp, the code club now has a home and will host its first class on May 31. The Mangawhai Club Code will meet on Wednesday evenings at Mangawhai Beach School, 5.30pm to 7pm during school term from May 31. Awards for hospital staff High tea for cancer funds

5

u by Joanna Manson

u by Joanna Manson

The Dargaville Hospital celebrated its inaugural Quality and Service Awards on May 2, acknowledging staff success in the workplace.

Eight women every day are diagnosed with breast cancer in New Zealand and with this figure in mind a few special ladies have come together to create a Mangawhai Pink High Tea on May 20 to raise funds for the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation.

p Hospital awards recipients: Left to right — Kayla Thompson, Barbara Drake, Janet Lethbridge, Heather Carter, Marion Steven, Viv Hutchins, and Jaquie Cripps

Dargaville Hospital operations manager Jen Thomas said “it was a fantastic night — we had 45 people in total at the awards including staff, partners and support.” It is the first time the awards in five categories: Patient Safety; Environmental/Health and Safety; Clinical Practice; Clinical Support, and Care for Colleagues have taken place.

To enter staff could either nominate themselves, their group, or others. “The night started with the DHB acknowledging staff who have worked longer than 20 years of service, with 12 of our staff having spent most of their career working at Dargaville Hospital — some for nearly 40 years,” said Jen. In all 14 staff members were listed in the awards lineup. ¢

Before moving to Mangawhai Jane Bentley used to host similar events at her Greenhithe home over the space of five years. “The first high tea started at my house with 30 people and we raised $1,700. Four years later we had 120 people and raised $15,000. It got so big I moved the event to the local village hall,” said Jane. After taking a couple of years off hosting the high tea and the recent passing of her husband, Jane was determined to put the event back on the agenda. “I thought we’ve just got keep talking about it (cancer) and where better to start than a pink high tea. Of the 3,000 women who get diagnosed each year there are a further 20 men as well so I’m also targeting all the men that support their women through the treatments.” Jane has organised a silent auction and raffles to take place during the high tea which will use vintage china for club sandwiches, scones and sweet treats. “Everything is donated — what I’ve learned from my own experiences is that the more you can get donated

the more money gets to go to the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation. ” She is hoping that around 100 people will attend with a fundraising target of $5,000. Tickets at $15 are available from Bammas Surf, Meant To Be, and Gifts and Books. The event will run from 2–4pm at the Senior Citizens Hall on Fagen Place. ¢

Community gets arty

Addressing business

u by Anna Harding

u by Joanna Manson

Mangawhai Artists Incorporated recently invited the community to create a collective artwork entitled ‘Project Stingray’.

The Dargaville Business Forum wants the wider public to know it is open to anyone interested in the local economy to join and is not limited to local business owners.

Project organiser and work designer Rosina Kamphuis said, “the stingray format of the design is taken because of the significance of the iconic stingray to our local community and to our waterways that stingray visit. Mangawhai honours the stingray in its name, manga meaning watercourse and whai meaning stingray.” The community was invited to participate in the free art event held in the Mangawhai Artist’s Gallery, by painting pre-cut plywood stingrays to be attached to two giant plywood rays on the exterior gallery wall, to complete the installation. Last week the gallery remained open to visitors and painters as a working exhibition. “The aim of the project is to not only interest the community in the arts and in their local art scene through active involvement for all ages, but also to create awareness of ourselves and our environment through the project’s theme of connection,” said Rosina. “I think that bringing people together in an informal creative setting and facilitating a great communal art experience, is food for the soul. Project Stingray’s response over the weekend was absolutely fabulous — we had people standing at the door waiting for a place. It was brilliant to see the

absorption and focus everyone had. More than 100 stingrays were painted as well as printed plywood offcuts, stingray banners, and cardboard minirays for the under 5’s.” The project was made possible with help from the Kaipara District Council’s Creative Communities grant, Resene Paint who donated all the paint and painting supplies, Computers Plus, the local radio station and Mangawhai Hire. ¢

A meeting last week discussed the forum’s future direction as an organisation and what the public wanted from its support. “We have worked on networking and offering workshops. We’ve built a good relationship with Northland Inc and the Commerce Commission,” said chair Peter Boyd. Guest speaker, Kaipara Mayor Greg Gent, discussed the importance of “creating the right environment to encourage and foster growth” while a major part of the evening was deciding what attendees wanted to get out of having an active business forum and whether more people were willing to join and offer their services. “The meeting really affirmed that people want a business forum and

questioned how we put more resources behind us in terms of looking at it in a bigger scheme. I think it was beneficial and I was really pleased with the turnout and the discussions that we had. I look forward to more people getting involved,” said Peter. “We are working closely with the Dargaville Community Development Board and other community organisations and we’ve made a lot of traction. Now it’s about how we make it sustainable. Having a paid person within the business forum will place us in a position that allows us to more seriously look at the different feedback and suggestions people have put forward.” To get involved or join the database email business@dargaville.org.nz. ¢

News in brief Police have made three arrests following the ram raid and theft of an RSA poppy donation box at the Paparoa petrol station on Wednesday April 26. Two 18-year-old men have been arrested and charged with burglary, a third person has been referred to Youth Aid and a fourth remains outstanding and will be spoken to by police.

“Although it is disappointing these young men have committed this burglary and made poor decisions on the night, it’s encouraging that they have come forward, and it’s hoped they can put this right with the service station owner and the local RSA,” said Northland police inspector, Justin Rogers.

Four Kaipara students were selected to attend the annual week long National Youth Drama School in Hawke’s Bay over the school holidays.

p A school holiday day camp at a Paparoa farm has been going for 14 years and 180 children between the ages of six and 12 attended this April. The camp is a combined effort of the Paparoa, Ararua, Maungaturoto and Kaiwaka churches. Activities included hut building, horse riding, bush survival skills, go-karting, T-shirt design, woodwork and mosaics, as well as songs, skits and camp fires.

Otamatea High School student Molly Curnow was one of the lucky ones. This was her second year attending. “It was honestly the best week of my life. A totally different world where young creatives from all over the country just band together and support each other’s learning and passion for the arts.” Molly specialised in screen acting but also took two taster classes — ‘acting Shakespeare’ and ‘poetry in performance’. “The whole experience is truly life changing. Everyone becomes a family for the week. It’s kind of like a dream because it’s so nonstop and stimulating. “It has given me so much that will contribute to my future career, such as confidence, skills in many different areas of performance, knowledge about the performing arts industry, and important connections with people in the industry.” Molly has been involved with the Otamatea Repertory Theatre since she

A lifelong teacher

u by Joanna Manson

Alan Andrew Peden who died on April 6, 2017, at Wellington Hospital, aged 82, is remembered by the Dargaville community whom he taught, coached and worked with as “an outstanding teacher and coach.”

Kaipara’s favourite gourmet food truck, Off the Grill has turned one after a successful first year in business.

p Nena and Lance Nepia with their Off the Grill food truck

Lance Nepia spent the last decade working as a chef before taking the plunge and starting up his own food truck business along with his veterinary wife Nena, based out of a 1977 Bedford camper. “After a trip to Aussie the street food scene caught my interest and the food truck idea grew from there. The best part about it is feeding the people you know — it’s locals helping locals,” said Lance. Based in Mangawhai, Lance and the food truck have enjoyed a busy summer season of events travelling to markets, weddings and other functions in the area as well as fitting in visits to regular spots in Kaiwaka and Maungaturoto. “We travel to Maungaturoto quite a bit

as it’s one of our favourite places to cook and also the busiest. We’ve been lucky with local businesses reaching out and letting us use their car parks on a Friday night,” he said. Although Off the Grill has been a big learning curve, Lance says the local support has been “wicked” along with the positive feedback they have received. “We’re pretty keen to build on what we achieved so we’re keen to step it up and venture out more and take on more festivals.” Off the Grill offers three food options at a time and Lance has a tried and trusted menu of 20 dishes which he rotates. Check their Facebook page for updated locations and times. ¢

Mr Peden was born in Huntly in 1935. He was the first of five children born to a Scottish immigrant, Andrew Alan Peden, and to New Zealand-born Flora Olwyn Rosser. “He was born to be a teacher and that is what he did and loved — being a lifelong teacher and a lifelong learner, “ said his son Robert Peden. His first teaching stint in Dargaville was in 1956. In 1961 he took on the sole charge of a school at the little fishing village of Huia on the Manukau Harbour. There he met Janet Gaye Woodward. They were married in Maungaturoto in 1962 and lived at Orere Point with Alan appointed as the sole charge teacher. In the next few years they had their two sons, Robert and Graeme. Alan was soon promoted to Tinopai and then on to Dargaville, where they stayed until their sons completed schooling. When Graeme left for university in 1982 they moved to Te Kuiti but after four years they came back to Dargaville with Alan as principal of Dargaville Primary School. Alan taught and coached swimming and was heavily involved in its administration, which continued

ATTENTION SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained. A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not maintained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. These problems include nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, toilets gurgling and taking time to empty. At this stage your septic system is a serious health hazard to you and your children. Human waste produces faecal coliform bacteria, a source of viral and bacterial gastroenteritis as well as Hepatitis A and other diseases. Hepatitis can be a debilitat debilitating condition and cause long-term harm to children. There are only three remedies. One: stop using the septic system until it recovers. This can take

p “Alan Peden was a lovely man with a great sense of humour whose contributions to the community of Northern Wairoa in particular, but also Northland can not be measured,” said Vern Stevens

long after his sons left the sport. Alan was a member of the Dargaville Lions and became the president in 2006. He received a 100% Attendance Award in 2016, as he had not missed a meeting in 20 years. He was also involved in orchid-growing. He moved to Wellington for the last two years of his life. “Dad was larger than life in so many ways,” said his son Robert. “He loved, he gave of his all, he served, and he was loved. The principles he lived by were good and he lived true to his principles. Dad, you and Mum have always inspired me and you always will. Rest in peace.” ¢

Save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy

over a month and is not normally practical. Two: excavate your septic system and relocate it. This is very costly and time consuming, sometimes requiring new resource consents and different systems. Three: treat your septic system with Septi-Cure™ every six months. Septi-Cure is cost effective. By far the most cost effective solution is to pour one litre of Septi-Cure™ down the toilet bowl every six months. This simple action will help keep your system working at top efficiency by reducing solids and scum. Instead of emptying your tank frequently, the reduction in solids and scum saves you expensive pump out costs. Your irrigation field and leach lines will become clear of slimes and blockages so nature can handle the gradual seepage and evaporation for you. When this is happening your system will be operating effectively and not endangering you or your family’s health. What is Septi-Cure™ Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring

microorganisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. As they progress through to your irrigation field they feed on the slimes that prevent seepage and evaporation. When seepage and evaporation return to normal, you have reduced the risk of contaminating groundwater and the environment as well as reducing the chances of infection for you and your family. Eventually, they get washed out of the system and have to be replaced to continue their work. This is why you introduce Septi-Cure™ to your septic system every six months for maximum efficiency. Problematic septic tanks – treat with Septi-Cure™. Prevent septic system problems – treat with Septi-Cure™.

A satisfied customer in Hamilton has been using Septi-Cure for over five years. He says this allows them to have an odour free septic tank with low maintenance costs. He also says that his service person is amazed at how well Septi-Cure works, keeping their tank in very good condition. * Results May Vary Before*

Back to the mud

Blast from the past

u by Andy Bryenton

The chill mornings and shorter days of autumn are truly here, heralding the change of seasons. That means calving is on the horizon for many of our local dairy farmers, with some already engaged in this tough but necessary aspect of the rural calendar year.

p It may look like a hard-core war machine restored from the battlefields of the 1940s, but this is in fact a new Ural motorcycle and sidecar, made in Russia. The unique two-wheeldrive system (the sidecar wheel is also powered) makes this design popular with those who have to tackle country roads, and it’s been a great idea since the Russians captured the machinery and plant used to build these bikes — back during the second world war! A machine that’s stood the test of time, and one which you may even catch a glimpse of here in New Zealand. Heavy machine gun not included.

You know us as your top local WOF & service centre for these...

To ensure smooth running, the Honda team stress the importance of keeping quads and bikes as clean as possible, even with a basic hosedown to stop mud and grass ‘crusting up’ around moving parts. It’s not only new life that comes back around at this time of year, though. Cold and rain are sure to bring back the mud, hampering attempts to reach those calving cattle and, indeed, to take care of many other farming tasks. In this kind of weather and these conditions, a nimble and powerful UTV or quad is an absolute godsend, which means a boom for maintenance right now in the workshops of local bike mechanics. Ahead of the curve you’ll find the team at Dargaville Honda, who have recently expanded their workshop to accommodate the expected influx. And it’s a good thing they have. The numbers of locals who take to the paddock — and the trails, and the beach — on quads is rising, and Honda remain

Local customs stand out u by Andy Bryenton

100

When your chosen vehicle stands head and shoulders above the competition in the national sales charts, how do you stand out in the crowd? It’s a question which is extremely relevant for Ford Ranger owners as the ever-popular ute drives into its sixth year of market dominance. But it’s also one which has a brand new answer. Just like in the days of the classic muscle cars of old, the solution to the issue of individuality and personalisation comes from a top-flight selection of custom machines. The versatility of the Ford Ranger has long been one of its top selling points — a ute able to be adapted for knobblytyred, flat-deck farming grunt or tinted, chrome-rimmed city sophistication and everything in between. New ideas from both an individual dealer level and lately from Ford’s head office design bureau have taken this adaptable ethos to a new strata, with the release of two different but comparable custom machines. The new Ford Ranger FX4 has caused a stir thanks to a combination of aggressive good looks and good timing. Coming to the fore just as the All Blacks prepare to face the British Lions, the blacked out windows, mag wheels, nudge bars and detailing of this limited edition make a statement of sporting patriotism as well as lending a menacing road presence to the big machine. A special edition of the Everest SUV, the FX2, is also in the works, with both limited to a strictly small numerical offering and both treated with black accents top to tail. However when the

p The new Ford Ranger FX4 is a customised statement which stands out from the crowd

first FX4 Rangers arrive at Dargaville Ford this week, they will sit next to come custom competition designed right here in the Kaipara. For some time now Lindsay West and his team have been re-imagining the Ranger as a stunning West Coast Edition, adding Mickey Thompson rubber, extra lights, bars, custom stitching on leather seats, deck lids, decals and more. No two have come out the same, and the demand has proven to be huge, with examples driving out as far afield as the west coast — of the South Island. The custom trend reflects the individualistic nature of Ranger owners

— people who not only appreciate the winning combination of power and smooth handling offered by Ford’s wildly successful light commercial, but who also want to be different from their mates. Of course, this wouldn’t be an issue at all were it not for the fact that the Ranger has become a ubiquitous sight on the highway, simply due to its popularity. For those who want to enjoy a unique driving experience, then, Dargaville Ford now presents two striking options. FX4 or West Coast Edition — the only real problem will be deciding on which would look best in your driveway. ¢

X marks the spot u by Andy Bryenton

The compact SUV concept is one which is both literally and figuratively going places, with competition hotting up in this sector of the auto market. Combining the family practicality of a large station wagon with the go-anywhere ride height and drivetrain of a sports utility, vehicles like Nissan’s X-Trail, which debuted in time for the millennium, have redefined what the Kiwi motorist wants in a versatile vehicle. There are some who even posit that the compact SUV is the reason for the decline of the big, power-hungry sedans and wagons which once dominated dads’ sheds all through the nation. If so, it’s time to hail to the new king, because Nissan’s latest version of the X-Trail packs in so much sophistication and technology that there will be no going back to the old ‘four doors and

a massive boot’ formula. Times have moved on, and even the design of the new X-Trail surfs the wave ahead of them. Beyond the sleek exterior it’s all about attention to detail. Take safety for example — simply one facet of modern auto design, but one which is of high importance to the family driver. You won’t just find the standard suite

QUAD BIKE SAFETY Wear a helmet. A helmet is a must while riding a quad bike around the farm.

p Compact but action-packed — the new Nissan X-Trail is equipped with the latest of automotive technology

of airbags here, tucked away amid the clever storage spaces and heated leather seats. Computer processors and scanning technology which was once the preserve of jet fighters provides not just a lane departure warning but intelligent lane intervention. Not just cruise control, but intelligent emergency braking, which can spot a pedestrian in the roadway before human reflexes can. Even your blind spots are covered by the electronic ‘co-pilot’, making this one of the safest places to be on the road. There’s also attention to detail lavished on the true purpose of a machine like the X-Trail — moving an active and busy family around. Doors which open wider, seats with more combinations of flex and fold, and enough grunt under the

hood — delivered via Nissan’s latestgeneration four-cylinder engine and a revised CVT transmission — to haul and tow even that big holiday getaway load. Here, again, attention to detail shows through, as the engineers at Nissan have equipped the X-Trail with an ecofriendly fuel saving mode, which learns your driving style and adapts to perform as frugally as possible. Seventeen years on from its inception, this next evolution of the X-Trail concept is leading the way with a suite of technologies and comforts which in many ways exceed those found in Euro luxury sedans. The perfect mix of practicality, purpose and power? Take a test drive and decide for yourself — the 2017 X-Trail is on forecourts now. ¢

The four day show called ‘Kaipara 111’ will feature work made by club members over the last two years, including a display of work from the late Pam Taylor.
