Half-century of service celebrated u by Ayla Miller

Fifty years of broken sleep, and dropping everything the moment the siren goes off hasn’t been easy for Dargaville volunteer firefighter Gary Murdoch, but the desire to help others and a devotion to his hometown has kept him going through good times and bad.

Now family, friends, fellow firefighters and distinguished guests from the extended Northland fire brigade community have celebrated Mr Murdoch’s remarkable achievement, which earnt him a double gold star, as a variety of awards were made to

brigade members at the station’s honours evening. On December 10, 1956, 18-yearold Gary, also affectionately known as ‘Maggot,’ joined the brigade straight out of the army. Attracted to the military style with which the organisation is

run and the comradeship, he went on to serve for 50 years — apart from a nine-year break. “They were hard men and the gear and trucks were very primitive,” Mr Murdoch said of the early days. continued on page 3 …

Candidates for the Fonterra Board will face some tough questions from local farmers when the Director Candidate Roadshow is in Whangarei this Friday, November 13 at 10.30am.

p Dargaville chief fire officer Jeffrey Palmer (left) congratulates Gary ‘Maggot’ Murdoch on 50 years of serving his community in the volunteer fire brigade

Dargaville chief fire officer Jeffrey Palmer said the brigade is extremely lucky to have Mr Murdoch. “He comes to the station on most days cleaning, working behind the bar, and organising money. He still turns up every time the siren goes off when he can to make sure car doors are locked and windows are closed. “I can ask him for advice, direction and guidance. He is a mentor and a legend.” Mr Murdoch’s brothers have also served in the brigade with over 150 years of combined dedication. “I was working locally for the power board. When the siren went off we just went,” he said. “You never know if it is going to be your mother or father’s property or your son or daughter in an accident. “I still get anxious when the siren goes off. I don’t think that ever leaves you.” He says a good firefighter needs a desire to help others and to be able to see ‘’they can do the world good.” Over 200 people gathered at the

station including Northland MP Winston Peters who spoke about the commitment it took to be a volunteer firefighter. He congratulated Mr Murdoch and his wife Helen on their service and recognised the efforts of the other members who also received service bars and awards. Kaipara District Council representative Peter Marshall said the Kaipara is well served by volunteer groups. “It is incredible to see the amount of 25-year service people in the crowd tonight.” ¢

Past Ruawai College student Ashlee Pocklington, has come the full hairdressing circle, having recently returned to the salon which fostered her love of hair whilst she was still at high school.

p A variety of multicultural performances will beon show at the annual Te Kopuru School Arts Festival

“We would like to hear from people who are keen to be involved in the day’s events. The aim is to bring the community together at the school, exposing the children’s different depths of talent and cultures, positive values and attitudes, ” said principal Lee Anderson. “We have a big focus on creative arts rather than literacy and numeracy for the day. The children participate in performances such as choir, kapa haka, dance groups, and ukulele. We would like to extend an invitation to singers, bands and choirs, cultural groups and dance ensembles across the district

to join the celebrations with us.” The school believe it is important to interact with the community and give people the opportunity to not just see how well the children perform on stage but also give others the opportunity to showcase the region’s creative side. “There will be a festival atmosphere and people don’t have to be skilled to participate. We believe the day is for building confidence and as the younger children start performing in front of others, the easier things get as they grow.“ For more information on participating or holding a stall phone the school on 09 439 1802 ¢

Make this a Kaipara Christmas u by Andy Bryenton

The jingles are playing, the trees are going up, and the none too subtle hints about favourite toys have started from local kids looking forward to Christmas, but there’s an important seasonal message beyond the tinsel and tunes aside from the deep religious significance of this time of year. It’s simple — making your Christmas local makes all of us prosperous. Christmas cow chaos on stage u by Andy Bryenton

Dargaville Little Theatre is the venue for a surprising showcase of storybook stars this festive season, as the man in red himself, jolly old Santa Claus, holds auditions for his Christmas Pantomime. The tradition of a fun, music-filled comical play for the holidays goes back over 100 years, and Santa (who still insists that he’s not a day over fortynine) has seen them all. Now, alongside such luminaries as Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, the Big Bad Wolf, Red Riding Hood, Prince Charming and more, Saint Nick is trying to pick a winner in what seems a bit like ‘Christmas Idol 2015’. “I remember when many of these acts got their big break, back with the Grimm Brothers fairy tales,” says Santa. “Some have had their own feature films, and they all worked well as an ensemble cast for Shrek — but this time there’s been a bit of chaos. I blame Jack’s cow, but you will get a bit of tension when princesses, dwarves, wolves and all have to share one dressing room.” A lot of hard work has been put in by the cast

and crew behind the scenes as well as out on stage. Comedy carols have been penned by our local festive scribes, and the Dargaville locals are putting in long hours of practice to bring Santa’s vision to life. “All my helpers make the ‘nice’ list, of course,” he says. ‘But this town really has some Christmas spirit! The big days to see my Christmas Pantomime — and to see which big fairy tale act takes away the grand prize — are the 6th, 12th and 13th of December.” Meanwhile the authorities are still trying to discover the whereabouts of Jack’s cow. Recent rehearsals at the Dargaville Little Theatre have been

NEW BIKE FOR CHRISTMAS!

LAYBY NOW AND MAKE IT EASY! Randells Motorcycles

8 Kapia St, Dargaville, Phone 09 439 6952, www.randellsmotorcycles.co.nz

Still the best under the tree In this age of high powered gaming consoles and smart phones, it’s a surprise to see an old favourite still tops the list of most wanted kid’s presents. While this year’s big requests with a power cord attached include the likes of Xbox One and radio controlled quad-rotor helicopters, the preferred wish when it comes to non-powered toys is not really a toy at all. It’s a new bike. The perennial favourite since post World War Two, a bike means more than just fun and games. To kids, it’s transportation, exercise, freedom and responsibility rolled into one. It opens up new opportunities, and begins the process of learning good road manners for future drivers. Here in Dargaville, Randell’s Motorcycles are also the home of bikes with pedals instead of pistons. As the experts in bikes — from kids’ tricycles through to rugged downhill racing bikes for adults — they recommend safety first as a good approach to buying a bike for under the tree. Buy a known brand of bicycle, to be sure of quality. Good welds, tight bolts and sturdy construction are more than just a bonus when your child’s safety is in question — they are paramount. A good bike should have smoothly

operating mechanical parts, and ideally should be assembled in-store by a professional — not to deride dad’s skills with a wrench, but the expert touch can save headaches later. There should also be a few other presents to unwrap along with a new bike — a new

helmet, as well as a strong pair of shoes, and even elbow and knee protection for those who are learning to ride for the first time. Specialist equipment for BMX off roaders, downhill racers and more are all available to complement the perfect package.

“I put word out and New Zealand’s Patch came to fruition. The first delivery took place within ten weeks of establishing the company. The growers earn a good portion of the sales — this is helping everyone get started and we are very excited about this venture,” said Hayden. “Gardeners often have excess produce which goes to waste or has to be given away but I thought there was a business opportunity for them as growing your own food does cost. “Selling through New Zealand’s Patch is a good incentive and this means consumers can purchase freshly picked produce from a reliable quality source.” He visits potential suppliers and works with a professional consultant on each garden ensuring guidelines are met. He takes photos and writes a personal profile which goes on the company website and these growers

New Zealand’s Patch has created a system in which communities can become fully self-sustainable. It is built on the passion of local farmers, growers and suppliers that take pride, care and offer transparency for the food they produce,” said Hayden. “At present we deliver around Wellsford and Warkworth and as far North as Te Hana and South to parts of Auckland including Albany and the North Shore.” For more information call Hayden on 021 024 665 33 or visit newzealandspatch.org ¢
