Of course, sporting glory is impossible without the tireless work of volunteers, coaches and officials, and these people ‘behind the scenes’ were honoured too, with the Sport New Zealand Coach of the Year going to squash mentor Philip Tana, the Steinlager Referee of the Year going to swimming official and adjudicator Carlrine Gillespie, and the Newman Engineering Administrator of the Year awarded to Kai Iwi Lakes waterskiing club president Sarah Wainwright. But perhaps the most enthusiastic applause of the night was reserved for the Jeff Oliver Print Club of the Year — thanks to the very spirited and proud supporters of the Northern Wairoa Bulls Rugby League and Sports Club.
As well as excelling in sports, this civic-minded club have also made it their mission to work with at-risk youth, forging a closer relationship with the community as a result. ¢
The year-five and six students have spent much of the last eight weeks painting a mural under the tutelage of art teacher Jackie McGlasson. Hayden Bradley, 10, says the mural is a tree at night with a full moon. “The colours on the inside are warmer and those on the outside are darker.” Ms McGlasson saw a painting and thought it would be an ideal subject for a mural. After working out a design and acquiring paint from a student who won an art competition the students set to work. “They did most of it at lunchtimes, although sometimes they came in after school,” says Ms McGlasson. “They
were pretty dedicated.” A larger group started the project. “Those who were motivated continued with it. Those who were not, dropped off.” With the mural now complete they say they are proud of what they have achieved. Ms McGlasson is also delighted with the result. “They have left a legacy to the school that will be here long after they go to intermediate.” She says the mural will be hung on an exterior wall at the school, so it can be seen by both students and the public. But an exact location has yet to be decided.

Garden ramble helps Northland Field Days ready to rumble Mangawhai community It’s a big job organising an event with 550 exhibitors and more than 25,000 u by Colin Patterson
Mangawhai Kindergarten and Plunket are jointly more than $8,000 better off thanks to the generosity of garden lovers from around the district.
p Breakfree Gardens combines harbourside charm with well-established plants, water features and places to contemplate nature
More than 300 took part in the 2013 Palmers Planet Mangawhai Garden Ramble which took place last Saturday and Sunday (November 9 & 10). They came from as far afield as Auckland and Kerikeri to appreciate the many fine gardens that Mangawhai has to offer. While it rained on the days leading up to the event, the skies cleared over the weekend providing ideal conditions to view many fine gardens on display. Feedback from both patrons and landowners who opened their gardens was both positive. A group of six mothers had met on a regular basis since March to organise the event and they’d like to acknowledge the Mangawhai community for supporting it every year. ¢

Christmas At Your Place is the theme for this year’s Dargaville and Northern Wairoa Lions Christmas Parade. The annual event will decorate the streets on December 7, so the time is nigh to start thinking about your float.

p Karen Froggatt and Jack Matich with the Tink Matich Memorial Cup
Brian Froggatt, who owns Brian’s Gym and Fitness Centre and is organising the event, says Tink was a regular at the gym and the bench press was his favourite lift. “Tink was a member at the gym for about three years. He was here most days and really inspired a lot of young people to join the gym and push themselves to work harder.” Tink’s parents, Jack and Karen Matich, donated the cup for the competition which will be held at Dargaville Fire Station. Everyone is welcome and people can register on the day of the competition. “I’m hoping to see a number of regular power lifters from around the North at the event and we’re really looking forward to seeing some of Tink’s old training buddies,” added Brian. After Tink’s funeral, about 15 close friends converged on Brian’s Gym for
a training session in his memory. In January this year the gym hosted a similar event to mark Tink’s birthday with proceeds going to the Northland Rescue Helicopter. Both emergency services attended the accident last year. ¢
In a change from previous years, judging of the floats will take place before the parade, so it is essential that all entries are assembled in the Boating Club car park by 11am. The parade starts at midday. Parade organiser Noel Moran, says that this year’s theme aims to include everyone. “People can register now and entry forms are available from Moran’s Bookshop or Dargaville BP. Lolly shop bows out u by Joanne Speechly
The Really Good Shop has served its last customer and said goodbye to the last of its lolly jars. The owners of the iconic Te Kopuru store say the closure is just a sign of the times. Shane and Sarah Searle opened The Really Good Shop five years ago, creating not only a local general store but also a tourist attraction. Instead of buffering their regular business with the sale of alcohol and tobacco they decided old fashioned sweets was the way to go. In November last year the couple were approached by Flybys and asked to supply 35,000 gumballs for a giant gumball machine at
Wellington Airport and later, they also supplied lollies for a similar machine in Auckland’s Queen Street. The Really Good Shop’s ingenuity has seen them receive many international lolly orders, with particular interest from ex-pat Kiwis. The lollies — over 165 varieties — are a mouthwatering sight, all presented in old fashioned lolly jars behind the counter.
Swinging sounds of the sixties u by Andy Bryenton
p Sweet goodbye — jars of lollies were up for auction, drawing crowds
As a final goodbye, all of the remaining 200 lolly jars were auctioned off on Sunday, leaving customers with some sweet memorabilia. “We would just like to thank our great customers over the years,” said Sarah. “And thank you for all the kind words.”

The music of the 1960s is still with us in so many ways — in the soundtracks of Oscar-winning movies, as the backbone of many a radio station’s rock playlist, and, increasingly, as covers by young bands and musicians paying homage to the legends of that era.
Due to our current growth we are looking for an additional administration assistant reporting directly to our Finance Manager. The position is based here in Dargaville.
It’s no exaggeration to say that artists who sprung from that era — the Beatles, of course, but also luminaries such as Clapton, Dylan, Hendrix, the Rolling Stones and the Doors (to name but a few) redefined music, making it more soulful and experimental than the poprock which swept the world in the 50s. If you were there, you’ll know and love the classics. If you weren’t, a trip back in time is both entertaining and enlightening. Then again, they say that if you remember the 60s you may not have actually been there… Nevertheless, a ‘time warp’ is about to open in Dargaville to this swinging era. It’s that time of year again — there’s a festive feeling in the air and the whole Kaipara is buzzing with anticipation. Not just because Christmas is just around the corner — but because it’s time again for the Kaipara Lifestyler’s big Shop and Win promotion. On these pages you’ll find the best local stores, all offering you a chance to win a memorable holiday bonus of $500! All you have to do to be in the draw for this big giveaway is to shop locally. Spend $50 or more with one of our listed Shop and Win partners between November 13th and December 11th, fill in an entry form in store and, if you’re the lucky shopper who claims the grand prize, you’ll walk away with $500 to spend with the store where you posted your entry. It’s that simple — and the best news of all is that all of these proud local
businesses have come together to bring you everything you need for the holiday season. Last year’s winners enjoyed a veritable banquet of holiday cheer, taking home $500 of family food and fun from Dargaville’s New Asian Restaurant. In previous years winners have received all kinds of surprising and delightful festive gifts, from enough groceries to feed a whole extended family of Christmas visitors to a relaxing spastyle pampering session to de-stress after the hectic holidays. Each year we also receive in excess of 10,000 entries to our shop and win contest — representing hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of local spending. It’s all a great holiday season boost to the local economy, because as we know, money spent in the Kaipara means more local jobs. ¢

A familiar face returns u by Andy Bryenton
It’s a common story these days in the Kaipara — folks who once left this part of the country to find work elsewhere are returning to enjoy the lifestyle of beaches, lakes and rivers — as well as an easier pace of life. But for Dargaville Ford’s newest sales team member, a return to the Kaipara represents not so much of a change of pace, but a step up to a new range of vehicles. That’s because Brenden Nathan has worked with Lindsay West and his team before, back when the Ford Focus was still in its first generation, and the rise of the Ranger as New Zealand’s top truck was only just beginning. After a stint working in the hot and hectic conditions of Western Australia’s mining boom, this Dargaville-raised salesman is ready to trade in his hard hat (his speciality in mining was safety) and get to know the
current strong lineup available on the Ford lot. Brenden came to Dargaville Ford thanks to a chance meeting — at the time he was the coach of the very successful Sharks rugby team, and he had approached Lindsay for sponsorship. Telling him that he’d done a great job representing his team, the Dargaville Ford boss saw his potential and offered him a job. Not long afterward this offer was accepted, and Brenden went on to become the country’s top seller of the Wildtrak pickup truck — always a favourite here in the Kaipara. With Aussie days of 52 degrees Celsius

Mud and petrol in the blood u by Andy Bryenton
The recipe for a top motocross champion? Start ‘em young — or at least, so say the gurus of freestyle MX and sky-high stunt riding. Whether on the track, or many metres above the dirt in full flight, there’s one thing which most of the world’s top riders have in common — they hit the throttle early, with the full support of their dedicated parents. Honda motorcycles are doing their part to raise a new crop of MX heroes too — you’ll see the folks from our local Dargaville branch out there at the trail rides and fun days, taking care of the ‘nuts and bolts’ so that kids big and small can keep doing what they love. And the manufacturers are fully in support of young riders too, with a range that steps up in power and potential along
with budding off-road enthusiast’s skills. Many families will have gotten their start with the durable little CRF50F or its equivalent — a bulletproof small bike packed with safety features, like an adjustable throttle limiter and auto clutch, mated to a simple threespeed transmission system. Years of research out in the field has proven that this machine helps young riders build confidence and core skills, while still sparking up enough thrills to keep them motivated! Next step up the tree might well be the brand new CRF110F, and while the engine size may have doubled, this is

p The new Honda CRF110F
still a very manageable ride for the 8–11 year olds. This model replaces the stalwart CRF70F, and features a new engine layout, a sportier design and an electric starter, while keeping the auto clutch system of the smaller 50cc bike, but adding an extra gear on demand. For the big kids — and this may very well include Dad — the CRF series also includes both 150cc and 230cc bikes, based on race-proven formulae and kitted out for serious off road thrills. Reliability and easy control have been
optimised on both the CRF150F and its big brother the 230F, with power aplenty and long-travel suspension to iron out the bumps. If there’s a little voice in your household (or in your head) telling you that there should be a MX bike under the tree this Christmas, Honda’s range is well worth a look. Your local dealer also carries a full range of boots, gloves, helmets and other safety gear to make the bikesports experience one which the whole family can enjoy. ¢

Big money raised Classic name at Mangawhai Gala for a classic taste u by Colin Patterson
u by Andy Bryenton
As many community groups know only too well, raising money is hard work and success is hard to find.
Many of Dargaville’s older residents will remember the Matich family name being associated with fresh seafood and tasty takeaways.
But one school seems to have found the formula for success. Mangawhai Beach School raised more than $30,000 from an Ag Day held on the Saturday of Labour Weekend. Principal Aaron Kemp says the event was a big success because it was extremely well organised. “It was led by Jo Yuretich who’s being doing it for a p Milo Parker (5) and Daxton Giroux (4) enjoy painting their number of years.” faces at Mangawhai Beach School’s Ag Day There were all a wide range of activities and products for their lambs, pigs, calves and goats. sale. “It was all and sundry,” says Mr Among the amusement stalls were Kemp. “It ranged from bouncy castles to the chance to dunk the headmaster, gumboot throwing, to James Reid from a task accomplished by a number The Feelers singing a few songs. For many years the main street of the riverside town sported a sky-blue sign carrying the Matich’s Premiere Restaurant logo. Now this historic name has been resurrected, as the shop until recently known as Ahlayz changes hands, reverting to the title of yesteryear. New owner and manager Pauline may not be one of the original Matich family, but her decision to honour the civic and business memory of the former owners (who plied their trade with great renown during the early to mid 20th century) has been wholeheartedly supported by today’s generation of the family, many of whom still live and work in the town their ancestors had a big part in building. Pauline has taken on the task of re-branding the busy restaurant at the age of 70 — a time of life when many folks would think of a peaceful retirement. Not so this enthusiastic restaurant owner, who, along with friend and neighbour Carolyn, is
13
setting out to change the menu, decor and signage of one of Dargaville’s most popular eateries just before the hectic tourist season. “I’m not going to wait for God,” she says, dismissing age as a barrier to achieving one’s goals. “He’s going to have to catch me!” Matich’s Premiere Restaurant offers a varied menu of proper old-style Kiwi takeaways, fresh local seafood, and of course those two original favourites — creamy seafood chowder with fry bread, and ‘world famous’ savoury sausages. They’re also now open Sunday to cater to the summer crowds. ¢

Dedicated volunteers Ruawai Rose Show honoured by cinema u by Andy Bryenton
Dargaville’s Anzac community theatre has proven a huge success since its recent opening, with hundreds of people from both Dargaville and surrounding towns coming to enjoy the best of international cinema. But the experience simply would not be the same without the tireless efforts of the theatre’s cadre of volunteers, who give freely of their own time to make sure patrons receive the full ‘red carpet’ experience. This past Sunday the entire team were treated to a screening of the acclaimed new blockbuster ‘Captain Phillips’, starring Oscar winning actor Tom Hanks in what has been described as a ‘defining and mesmerising performance’.
