The national win follows another in the regional competition a month ago involving all cadet units north of Taupo. Contestants are tested in a wide range of skills including drill, navigation, general service knowledge and radio communication, among others. “The Skills Team comprises of nine of our best cadets, and we have 45 cadets in the Mangawhai Unit,” said its commander, Lieutenant Sandra Grayson, adding that it was an eventful time for the 13-to-18 year-olds. “We are right now in the throes of doing up our new base in the old Hakaru Bowling Club which will be officially opening on November 24.” The New Zealand Cadet Forces comprise the Sea Cadet Corps, the Cadet Corps and the Air Training Corps. The individual units are local community youth groups which operate under a partnership with the Defence Force and there are currently 106 cadet units with a strength of 249 officers and 3,446 enrolled cadets. The training programme is designed to provide leadership, teamwork and self-discipline skills.

Family members and close friends called in casually throughout the day, with the traditional Smith clan teapot kept busy to compliment plates of home cooking and a decorated birthday cake. Mavis is taking life quietly as she passes the 102 milestone. In this remarkable

lifetime, she can recall the one-time extent of the Kaipara kauri forests, and this interest led her, with extended family members, to found what has today become The Kauri Museum, where her efforts and those of her family are saluted in the Smith Wing.

The Importance of Qualifications At this time of the year, when our senior students are leaving high school for the last time and taking their first steps into the “adult’ world of work or study, it is opportune to remind ourselves of the importance of qualifications. Recently I was discussing this topic with a group of women of various ages. One person had a daughter who had made a successful transition into tertiary study and was doing well in her first year at university. The mother in this case was extremely pleased that her child was on the way to gaining a qualification that would help her into higher paid and more satisfying work than she had experienced, and the reason for this was that she herself did not have any qualification and this had meant a lifetime of low paid work. Amongst our small group on that day, those of us with formal qualifications were earning at least twice as much as those without. Multiply that over the many years that most of us have to work and it adds up to a considerable amount. Formal qualifications are important because they inform potential employers that you have the knowledge base and skills they need. Specific qualifications guarantee that you have high level understanding like the other people in your field. Would you feel confident going to a nurse, doctor, teacher or mechanic who did

“One of the aims is to celebrate cultural diversity and as well as Kapa Haka there will also be Pacifica, Zumba, dance and a whole range of performing arts.” “We hope to expose the community, in particular nga tamariki, to different cultures so that barriers may be removed and positive values and attitudes be established” Schools from around the district will perform as well as pulling in other performing arts groups such as Baylys Beats, Circus Kumarani, and Dargaville Dalmatian Club band.

“The adult groups are role models for children so they can see where performing can lead.” In past years the festival has drawn crowds of around 800 people and Mrs Anderson is hoping for sunny skies to contribute to the picnic atmosphere. “It’s always well received and the community always gives us positive feedback.” A variety of food stalls as well as a hangi will be available and the school encourages anyone wishing to perform or have a stall to contact the office on 09 439 1802.

not have the relevant qualifications? Going to a tertiary institution such as a university is not the only way to gain good qualifications. On the job training such as apprenticeships have the advantage of no student debt and some people study extramurally while they work. Practically all industries these days offer training and sensible workers take advantage of this to prepare for better employment opportunities that may come their way or be forced on them. A forestry worker who has completed the National Certificate in Forestry has much better employment chances should he no longer be able to work on the ground due to injury or economic reasons than an unqualified forestry labourer and this is the case across lots of industries and work types. Let’s encourage our young people to make the most of the educational opportunities that are available to them. We are so lucky to live in a country where education is mainly free or heavily subsidised and an investment in a qualification will pay us back many times over our life. Gaining a qualification when you are young sets you on the path for a satisfying and well paid working life. Let’s help our young people get the best start in adult life that we can.  This year has seen a number of milestones at The Kauri Museum as it marked its 50th birthday, hosted a visit by Prime Minister, John Key, after the museum won the title of favourite New Zealand attraction in the Grand Pacific Ultimate coach series, and it became the first museum in the world to achieve certification from CarboNZero, an international organisation aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and carbon footprints. In her report to the annual general meeting last week, CEO Betty Nelley also said it was satisfying to be able to produce an operational profit during a recession. Bridge protest march New Kai Iwi attraction

3

 by Paul Campbell

 by Paul Campbell

A protest march to highlight the dangers of two single-lane SH12 bridges at Matakohe last Saturday attracted a police escort and plenty of support from passing truck-drivers as about 30 placard-waving demonstrators and support vehicles marched from Andersons Bridge to Hardies Bridge and back. The Bridge Concern Committee which organised the event is campaigning for the bridges replacement. “Our march was all about residents of the Kaipara still being unheard in a battle that has been on going for at least 50 years with these out-dated and very dangerous one lane bridges including the roadways on both approaches,” said organiser, Sue Reyland.

A long-time visitor to kai Iwi Lakes has made a major pay-back for the years he’s enjoyed there — a complete childrens playground.

“We expect no less than total road realignment which has been promised over and over for many years. While people still remain being maimed and traumatised by accidents or near misses, Transit says three people must die before they will even consider changes. There have already been two recorded deaths on these bridges three known deaths on the road leading up to them.”

Ross Archer said he wanted to “give something back to an area that has given me so much” and his company, Playco teamed up with Joe Moores from Commercial Play Systems to provide the new playground, at a substantial discount to Kaipara District Council, for visitors and campers to enjoy at the Domain’s Pine Beach. Mr Archer first visited the lakes more than 50 years ago in his grandfather’s bus, after a six hour drive from Auckland. He recalls up to 20 people camping in the bus at one time. Since then, four generations of Archers have enjoyed the tranquillity and pristine water, and during the past 25 years have camped at Taharoa Domain up to five times a year. Based on a wide travel experience he rates Kai Iwi Lakes as a “best in the world location. “As the owner of a playground

business, I personally wanted to give back to this area, that had given so much to me.” He gained support from Kaipara District Council’s community spaces manager, Thomas Patterson, plus Joe Moores who does specialised work on some of the council’s playgrounds and has staff living in Kaipara. “Our goal is to make the Domain as welcoming as possible and this will give children something to do away from the water or when conditions don’t suit swimming,” Mr Howells said. “I think it will prove very popular because both campers and day trippers have been asking for a better playground.”

Once Upon a Christmas  by Rose Rees-Owen

Cute elves, classic Christmas carols and Santa himself is what’s in store for Dargaville Little Theatre’s production, Once Upon a Christmas. Around 30 children between the ages of 5-14 are cast, with three of the main roles filled by participants in the theatre’s acting classes, including one of the narrators, Kees McCahon. “It’s set very close to Christmas Eve and elves are getting all the toys together — then they discover that Santa has gone missing so they set off around the world to find him,” says co-director Eryn Wilson-Collins. She adds that the audience can

expect fun, music and Christmas carol favourites. “Santa also makes an appearance and afterwards members of the audience have a photo opportunity.” The original script was written by Deborah Steele who formed the idea after talking with co-director, Lisa McEwing. The show opens at 10.30am and 1.30pm on November 17 and 18 with door sales only. Tickets cost $2 and an additional $5 for a photograph with Santa.

The annual Maungaturoto Country Club Trail Ride for quad and motocross bikes will raise funds for rugby at junior and senior level. The ride takes place on Sunday, November 25, and covers about 50 kilometres of tracks across farms and through pine and native forest. The track is suitable for experts and novices.

Country Club president, Rex Roadley. The Country Club has two affiliated rugby clubs — JMB and the Otamatea Hawks.

Funds raised will again be used to fund improvements to the rugby fields at Maungaturoto Country Club.

“Many riders who flock to this Kaipara trail ride, which is in its fifth year, come from Whangarei and Auckland. It also attracts locals, including some farmers who enjoy riding their farm bikes in a new environment.”

“After last year’s ride the main rugby field was re-grassed and this year, funds will revamp the club’s second field,” said Maungaturoto

He added that as the fields also serve as an emergency land pad for rescue helicopters, they need to be well-drained and in good condition for ambulances.

The farming professionals who do it all Kaipara documentary rewriting history  by Rose Rees-Owen

Rex Browne has been involved with farming his whole life — growing up in a family with a strong rural tradition and with a lifelong affinity for machinery as well as for the land. For the past 20 years he has not only run a successful 450 acre dairy farm near Paparoa, — he has also built a solid reputation as one of the leading agricultural contractors in the North. “From moving clay to baling hay — we do it all” is the motto of his eponymous contracting company, and Rex really means it! With the latest in modern farming machinery there’s no job around the farm which this proud professional and his team can’t handle. It’s always best to come from the perspective of experience, and Rex values old-fashioned qualities like punctuality, honesty and a job well done just as much as he respects the power of today’s modern agricultural machines. This

LIMITED

season Rex Browne Contracting have added a modern high-capacity square baler to their repertoire, allowing them to efficiently process silage for dairy operations. The larger sized bales proved popular last year, and this new addition to Rex’s machinery fleet can tackle many gradients of land — in fact, on a recent job, connected to their powerful New Holland tractor, the team processed 180 bales in a single evening! An internal chopper means that more silage fits into each bale, and the resultant bales are easier to load and easier for the herd to digest at feed out time. Rex and his two full-time staff (skilled machinery operators Brian McCarroll and Dennis Morgan) pride themselves on efficient, cost effective service, saving their clients money. Many of Rex’s customers have been with him for two decades — a real legacy of trust.

Mystery at Midge Bay, a documentary which may rewrite New Zealand’s history books, will hold its premiere at the Kumara Box near Dargaville.

 Winston Cowie and David Sims on set at Ripiro Beach

Writer, historian, and co-producer, Winston Cowie said he and director, David Sims wanted to take an independent look at the shipwreck washed up on the Pouto Peninsula, Cecillia Maria from Portugal being the first in New Zealand, predating Captain Cook’s Endeavour which sunk in 1795. “For years I’d been hearing about Spanish and Portuguese ships being the first European settlers in New Zealand but there was no scientific proof, there was only smoke and David and I wanted to investigate it thoroughly and independently.” He began researching part time in 2008 and sort the help of local historians, Ron Halliday, Al Willcocks, Ian Godfrey, Logan Forrest and Noel Hilliam

who retrieved a piece of the wreck from Midge Bay in 1982. “I chose the Kumara Box to give those of the locals involved and their families the first opportunity to see it. It’s also an iconic spot in Dargaville to host it.” Lawyer at an Auckland law firm by profession, Winston funded the entire project through his and David’s film production company, Solaris Films and hopes that it will be picked up by local and international television stations. It premieres November 17 at 6.30pm with a limited number of seats available. To book email winston@ solarisfilms.co.nz with admission prices of $20 and a meet and greet starting at 5.30pm

Rates relief on offer Many Kaipara ratepayers may qualify for refunds of up to $590.00 under an assistance scheme provided by the government. Kaipara ratepayers have already been granted a total $280,427 in rates rebates for the 2012/2013 year and the Kaipara District Council is worried that many who qualify for this assistance may not be aware of it, and is urging home-owners to check their eligibility. The government funded Rates Rebate Scheme offers assistance to low income home owners by providing rebates of up to $590.00 and eligibility is based on household income, dependants and the level of rates — including water rates. Last year, 671 Kaipara applications were processed but senior rates officer, Shirlene Powell, says with the average rate bill rising by 19 per cent this year, many more are likely to meet the criteria. “We want to ensure that everyone who is potentially eligible should be given the opportunity to seek the rebate that they are entitled to receive. Anyone who may have applied unsuccessfully in past years should definitely consider looking at it again.”

As an example, she says a couple living on national superannuation of $30,584, with rates (including water) of $2,000, which is close to the Dargaville average, would be eligible for a rebate of $361.67. Rates are for the current year to 30 June 2013, with the exception of water which is metered charges from the previous 12 months. Income is based on the year which ended on 31 March 2012. Application forms are available from the Rates Rebate and Kaipara District Council websites or council offices. Home owners can quickly check whether they are likely to qualify for a rebate online at www.ratesrebates. govt.nz by entering last year’s income and the current year’s rates into a simple calculator. Alternatively, they should contact Kaipara District Council’s customer service team. “We are only too happy to help. Even if you don’t qualify for the full $590.00, any rebate is a bonus so people should check it out”, Ms Powell says.

In addition access to medical support is always available with the medical centre and the St Johns adjacent and as a registered nurse I can make medical referrals where necessary. We can also provide meals for residents where required, at just $5.00. “The units mean independent living — people need to be over 55 to aquire them, and they are part of the overall accommodation here of 27 units, both owner and tenant occupied.”

Classics and customs, and chrome… for a cause  by Our Motoring Correspondent

The picturesque town of Maungaturoto, tucked just under the southern lee of the Brynderwyns, is the venue this spring for a celebration of classic vehicles with a difference. Not only is the first annual ‘Wheels on the Field’ event a stunning showcase of customised, classic, rare and unique cars, trucks and bikes, it’s also set against one of the most amazing backdrops imaginable. And, like all the best events of its kind, it brings together lovers of automotive history for a good cause. November 24th will see vehicles from many eras descend on the wide green sports field of Otamatea Christian School, as stalls and amusements, music and hot food create a carnival atmosphere for the whole family. The small local school is a cornerstone of the community, but it receives no special funding from the government… this fun event is being held to raise money for new technology, books, and the other necessities of modern education. When faced with the challenge of running a small country school without the funding (or the school fees) Auckland schools use to raise revenue, the parents at Otamatea devised a way to raise the money by bringing the community together. And there’s one thing that’s

certain about the town of Maungaturoto — its people love a great day out. They also have an affinity for classic steel and chrome — so expect to see gleaming fenders, fins, grilles and airbrushed flames as the classic car and motorcycle enthusiasts of the north turn out to enjoy a day in the spring sunshine, meeting and greeting other fans of automobilia. If you’re into the style of the 50’s era, the power of America’s most iconic muscle cars, the roar of powerful v-twin motorbikes or the refined elegance of European classics, this is an event to mark on your calendar. If you own such a vehicle, come and get involved — there are prizes up for grabs across a number of categories. It’s set to be a great day for Maungaturoto — and a great time for the whole family to enjoy.

Serious fun for a new generation  by Our Motoring Correspondent

Kiwi offroad riders are among the best in the world, and one of the big reasons for the success of our motocross and extreme sports champions is that we start ‘em young. All across the nation kids get their first taste of offroad thrills thanks to machines like the Polaris Outlaw 90 and Outlaw 50 ATVs, progressing to bigger and more powerful quads and two-wheelers as their skills grow. ATV quads especially are a huge part of our rural lifestyle — the backbone of modern farming as well as recreational fun. Polaris have developed their juniorsized Outlaw range with enjoyment and safety first and foremost in mind, providing the perfect way for mums and dads to introduce their kids to the excitement of offroad riding while also offering peace of mind and practical economy. The Outlaw 90 sits at the top of the model range in power, sporting a gutsy four stroke power plant connected to a smooth automatic transmission with reverse gear as standard. Riders from 12 years of age will find the Outlaw 90 to be an easy-to-ride but engaging machine —

lightweight and manoeuvrable but with enough get up and go to make keeping up with Dad’s big Polaris Sportsman a breeze on those family adventure rides. To help ease new riders into the skills of handling an ATV, there’s even an adjustable limiter which parents can set, and visibility features such as daytime running lights and a flexible flag antenna make the Outlaw safe and secure. Like its bigger brother, the Outlaw 50 is designed for a smooth ride (thanks to clever long-travel rear suspension) and makes the perfect introductory ATV for kids 6 and older. Both machines come with a helmet and a simple to follow instructional DVD to make sure that budding off road stars gain confidence and stay safe.

Nature’s design reels in the big ones We all know that the shape of a shark works well when it comes to catching fish — the hungry predators of the ocean aren’t known for their lack of appetite, and they have been honed into swift hunters by millions of years of evolution. Similarly, the Predator kontiki (a favourite of Kiwi anglers) has been fettled and engineered to perfection over the years, developing into the sleek and deadly system seen today. That’s because it’s the passionate project of a group of New Zealand fishermen who really know their stuff — a team who promise you years of fun and successful catches with the latest iteration of their creation. With up to 54 pounds of thrust from its motor, controlled by both an innovative power management system and with the option of an advanced ‘autopilot’, the Predator is made to slice through the waves, handling the rough conditions of the west coast when other rigs would fail. Even snags and foul-ups are avoided with an inbuilt safety system to protect the motor.
