 Organisers of a recent fundraiser for Cancer Foundation are thrilled with the results of the community walk in Ruawai and plan to organise another event next year. The weather held, they had a turnout of more than 100 keen supporters, some from as far away as Ruakaka, and raised above $4,000. Zarrah Duffy, chief organiser, would like to offer her appreciation to all supporters, sponsors and local businesses for their assistance, donations and time in bringing the important event together. “Everyone has been touched by cancer in some way, so this isn’t about awareness, it’s about actually doing something to help,” she said.

 At the recent Dargaville High School senior prizegiving the new head leaders for 2019, Jordan Hutchings and Marnie Jones, were announced in front of a packed school hall, and outgoing Morgan Hutchings and Matai Newman were thanked for their outstanding service in 2018. Academic Dux Litterarum for the 2018 class was Ashlee Bradley, and Proxime Accessit was Fern Donovan — both are pursuing tertiary education in 2019. Sports duxes were Jordan Hutchings and Aarai Te Tuhi Makoare. Assistant Principal, Ian Butterworth, noted the highlight of this first evening prizegiving was the presentation of $121,500 in scholarships by outside agencies, presented to students moving on to tertiary study, and expressed his gratitude to sponsors. “Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari, he toa takitini.  At the 9th annual Tangiteroria trail bike ride recently, 877 riders took part in the thrills and spills of the fundraiser, collecting $22,000. The school enjoys a proud history of community involvement and support, and this was witnessed by the popularity of the event. Funds raised will aid the school with a range of educational activities and resources such as camps, IT equipment and online programmes, as well as practical items like shade sails. The trail ride concluded with a race of the track for the Allan Jessop Memorial Trophy, which was won by Aidan Lang. “A huge thank you to our landowners, sponsors and the Tangiteroria community, including all our amazing marshalls and helpers, and to everyone who competed in this event,” said school principal, Megan Tebbutt.

Community heroes awarded  by Jill Dickie

At a recent ceremony held at the new Sportsville complex in Dargaville, the Kaipara Citizens Awards were presented to six finalists from 18 nominations, for their extraordinary contributions to the district.

 Kaipara Citizens Award winners 2018, celebrated for their extraordinary commitment to helping others in the community

“These awards celebrate the movers and shakers in our district,” said Mayor Jason Smith. “They give their time freely and with great heart, expecting nothing more in return than a good job done. Today’s winners have worked tirelessly for decades — more than 300 years between them — and what they do connects our communities.” The recipients were Christine Bygrave, a foundation member of Kaiwaka St John, church organist and committee member of several organisations throughout more than 40 years. Terri Donaldson, 20 years’ commitment to the Maungaturoto area and current chair of Maungaturoto Residents Association. Bryce Gatehouse, more than 60 years volunteering and contributing to the Ruawai area, with

numerous accolades involving rugby. Noelene Gatehouse, more than 60 years service to the Ruawai community in sport, catering and gardening. Norma Ker, more than 20 years volunteering in the Dargaville area, including at the Dargaville Primary School and Northern Wairoa Netball. Haki Wihongi, more than 35 years involvement with Maori Wardens, Dargaville Police and a respected kaumatua. Award winners were presented with a certificate and pin, a bouquet and a young kauri tree. “Your magic will go on for over 1,000 years — if you plant it in the right place,” said Mayor Smith. The Kaipara District Council appreciate all nominations for people who contribute to their communities — Mayor Smith noted: “The kumara doesn’t speak of its own sweetness.” 

Rates case fails in court The long-running saga of legal challenges over the payment of outstanding rates to the Kaipara District Council has failed in the Court of Appeal, which last week dismissed a case brought by Mangawhai ratepayers Bruce and Heather Rogan. The appeal was heard by three judges, including the President of the Court of Appeal the Honourable Justice Kos. The Rogans were ordered to pay costs. This decision is the latest step in the extensive litigation driven by the Rogans and the Mangawhai Residents and Ratepayers Association (MRRA). It means they have now comprehensively lost in all lines of legal argument, other than the first judicial review in which the courts agreed with the systemic failures that the former Kaipara Commissioners had already publicly identified and accepted in court. The actions stemmed from protests at higher rates to cover the over-run costs of a major sewage project in Mangawhai, which were then validated by government legislation. Crown manager at KDC, Peter Winder said: “It is a shame that this process has cost the Rogan’s and the ratepayers of the Kaipara District so much over such a long period of time

— especially given the important role that the Rogans played as whistleblowers on the historic failures of the council. “This latest ruling is important and sets a clear precedent for those few ratepayers who still have outstanding rates from the period prior to and during the term of the Kaipara Commissioners. The council has consistently expressed to me its view that all outstanding rates and penalties should be paid and that all ratepayers need to pay their fair share of the rates required by council. “I expect that the council will now work with those ratepayers that still have outstanding rates to secure payment of what is owed. Given this decision, I hope that can be resolved without further recourse to the courts.” Mayor Jason Smith said he is “looking forward to having this story at an end so that we can all get on with the job of growing Kaipara’s bright future together.”

Upskill for the future  by Jill Dickie

Kaipara students have an opportunity to discover what is on offer for them after leaving school at an upcoming Education and Employment Expo, being held at the Dargaville Town Hall on November 23 and 24.

New recruits on the beat  by Jill Dickie

Two new constables have been deployed at the Dargaville Police Station, after the August announcement that Northland police numbers would be boosted by 87 — an increase of 30%.

 DCDB representatives, Simone Matthews, Lorraine Davidson, Janeen Hunter and Sue Curtis, are preparing for the upcoming Education and Employment Expo

The Train to Gain event is hosted and organised by the Dargaville Community Development Board and will focus on showcasing local training providers and businesses. There are many and varied educators, training providers and employers who can offer knowledge, skills and jobs in Dargaville and the surrounding areas, and the expo brings them together in one place for convenience. The event is open to all students from year 11 upwards and people wishing to enter the workforce, as well as adults wanting to upskill, retrain or who

may be considering a career change. “The DCDB recognise that many within the community — younger and older — are eager to secure training and education to upskill, realise their potential and achieve a successful and meaningful work life experience,” said Dargaville Community Development Board enterprise development manager, Lorraine Davidson. “We are promoting a new generation of skilled people for the local workforce right here in Dargaville.” For information on the exhibitors attending see dargavillenz.com.

 New constables, Jordan Hammon and Mark Walding, have joined the Dargaville Police Station team

One of the new recruits, Constable Jordan Hammon, grew up in Ruawai and says he always wanted to be a policeman. “It is definitely beneficial to be stationed in your own area because you know the community and already have working relationships with local people,” he said. The other, Constable Mark Walding, has been in Dargaville for around 10 years and is also looking forward to helping people in the community and making a change to people’s lives after seeing how difficult situations can be. “I have a background here so understand how people can get into

trouble due to their style of upbringing,” said Constable Walding. Having these two extra staff will bring the station back to full strength. “We’re really looking forward to having Mark and Jordan on board at the Dargaville Station. They have strong local ties, and both will ensure there is focus on serving their community in the best possible way,” said Senior Sergeant Rob Huys. Both the constables are looking forward to advancing their experiences in frontline policing through working with the experienced staff at the Dargaville station and may choose to specialise in other fields in the future. 

Fairer representation across Kaipara

Top prizes for local holiday park

 by Jill Dickie

The Kaipara District Council has voted to implement its earlier proposal regarding its boundary representation arrangements, after a number of submissions and hearings.

 Jane and Chris McComb have won their second Supreme Award for their work at Kauri Coast TOP 10 Holiday Park

The holiday park is set on two hectares of parkland surrounded by native bush with river boundaries and has undergone many improvements since Jane and Chris took over. “We’re always looking for new ways to add to our guests’ experience when they stay with us,” said Jane. “One of the best forms of advertising is word of mouth, so we take the time to read and acknowledge every customer review and consider how we can use these insights to improve the Kauri Coast TOP

10 experience and make customers feel valued.” Chief executive officer TOP 10 Holiday Parks, David Ovendale, said the team at Kauri Coast TOP 10 Holiday Park are an outstanding example of a business listening attentively to their customers and going above and beyond to create memorable guest experiences. “They should all be extremely proud of their efforts,” he said. The McCombs have won or placed as runner-up in 10 awards during their five years within the group. 

Under the Local Electoral Act 2001, all local authorities are required to carry out reviews of their representation arrangements every six years. Rigorous debate throughout the council meeting addressed many of the issues submitters raised, including the total number of councillors, alternative ward structures, adequate representation and recognition of communities of interest. A number of issues raised by submitters were ‘out of scope’ under the Local Electoral Act 2001, including the use of outdated population data, lack of provision for future growth, rating per head of population and reduction to four councillors. “We sought feedback from the community on the initial proposal through a variety of ways, such as our public drop-in meetings, and attending the Saturday Mangawhai Market. We received 81 submissions, and we want to thank the community for their time and effort in providing their thoughts and ideas,” said general manager governance, strategy and democracy, Jason Marris.

 Kaipara District Council general manager governance, strategy and democracy, Jason Marris thanks the community for their submissions

The new ward structure ratio is four wards, with two councillors each — a total of eight councillors, plus an elected mayor. Any person who has made a submission on the council’s initial proposal may lodge an appeal against the decision. Appeal forms can be provided through the website kaipara.govt.nz/RepReview, by email to haveyoursay@kaipara.govt. nz, or by collecting from one of the council offices. They should be returned to council no later than 4pm on Monday, November 12. 

KAIPARA SPOTLIGHT NOTE TO DRIVERS AROUND STABILISED REPAIRS Between October and March Broadspectrum and KDC will be undertaking sealed pavement repairs in anticipation of the annual reseal programme. The most common means of repairing minor defects is to stabilise the existing pavement. This introduces fresh aggregate into the failure in addition to a cement stabilising agent to aid in hardening and increase longevity. Due to the nature of this repair, these stabilised patches require significant amounts of drying time in order to meet Council specifications for hardness. We kindly ask that you adhere to the posted temporary speed limit while traveling through any of these works sites, not only for your safety, but also the safety of our workers, and to prevent damage to the repairs. We understand that there is a degree of inconvenience caused by these works, however this inconvenience is significantly extended if we are required to return to any sites that require repairing.

Young farmers accept challenge

 by Jill Dickie

Two Kaipara students have been recognised for their consistent efforts in sport at the recent 2018 ASB Northland Secondary School Sports Awards held in Whangarei.

In the lead-up to the 2019 Northern Regional Final of the FMG Young Farmer of the Year in Warkworth, four local farmers are excelling in the competition and accepting each challenge at a district level with confidence.

Chopper story – my story The Northland Rescue Helicopters are a phenomenal asset to the region – one with many hard to reach rural locations, natural bush areas and huge industries such as forestry and boating, that add to the need for this service. This service has been in operation for 30 years this year, and we know we will need it for many more. I have avoided (so far) the need for an emergency flight – but I am still affected by others that have needed their services. Last year, my brother tragically passed away in a horrific motorbike crash north of Auckland. He had been out doing what he loved best – an afternoon ride on his Harley. He had all the safety gear but that didn’t help in a head on collision with another motorbike rider. That rider is alive today because of the care that they received from the Northland Rescue Choppers. While it was too late for my brother, I find solace in the fact that it didn’t become a double fatality that day thanks to the service I have personally supported for years. My friend has a beautiful healthy two-yearold son, who loves to get into everything – everything! Like the butter in the fridge or his mum’s cosmetics. We have a good laugh at his adventures – but there was no

laughter or smiles moments after his birth when the midwife noticed that something wasn’t right.

 Brant Julian, Brody Goodman, Daniel Richards and Jack Bellamy

One of the qualifiers, 24-year-old Brant Julian from Te Kopuru, belongs to the Northern Wairoa Young Farmers Club. He is second-in-charge on a dairy farm, after returning from a three-year stint in Australia, where he dramatically advanced his skills and knowledge. “It was an amazing experience. I learned so much over those three years,” he said. Brant will be joined at the Northern Regional Final by Daniel Richards, Jack Bellamy and Brody Goodmon, all members of the Kaipara Young Farmers Club. Wellsford farmer, 21-year-old Daniel Richards, who

manages his parents’ 300-cow dairy farm, won first place in the district competition. “I wasn’t expecting to win,” he said. “This will be my second regional final. I wasn’t sure what to expect the first time, but I have a lot more confidence now.” Club member 18-year-old Jack Bellamy is also excited to have qualified. He teamed up with fellow club member Brody Goodman and together they won the NZ Young Farmers Northern Region Fencing Competition last month, securing them a spot in the national final in Christchurch in February. The final four finalists will be decided on November 17. 

The two 2018 ASB Code Award winners are James Panoho from Ruawai College for his commitment to basketball, and the other Annmarie Holst from Otamatea High School for squash. James has been playing basketball for three years, and has enjoyed the coaching and support from Ray Cameron of Kaipara Basketball, and was selected for the under 22 Maori team that travelled to Canada in August earlier this year. He was proud to be the first Ruawai College student to win this award and is now preparing for the NZ Maori under 23 Indigenous Tournament held in Rotorua in January 2019. “Basketball has provided opportunities to travel, and I wish to continue to take my opportunities overseas and see what happens,” he said. “I am very grateful to my family, my school and my community for the support they have given me.”  Ruawai College student, James Panoho, was recognised with the ASB Code Award for Basketball Now in their 27th year, the at the recent 2018 ASB Northland Secondary School awards aim to recognise the Sports Awards sporting achievements of students attending an affiliated Northland opportunity to showcase young people Secondary School and serve as an that are currently succeeding in sport. 

It wasn’t about that piece of paper, it was the skills that I was taught by our kaiako to build my business. Angeleen Raw Cakes, Whangārei

Within a short space of time, experts were flown to Whangarei from Starship to run tests and take the newborn back to the specialist cardiac unit for children for his first of two surgeries. At one week old, he had open heart surgery. A frightening time for any parent. Had he not been flown to specialist care in Auckland, this crazy gorgeous toddler could have had a much different story. And these are just two examples I know of. There are hundreds more stories like this happening every year. I often hear the words “you never know when you might need it” – never a truer word spoken. My friend didn’t go to hospital to birth her baby with the thought she would be waving him off barely hours later from the helipad. But she did. So next time you drive past the hangar in Whangarei and notice its empty, or watch as a helicopter lands at a local hospital– just take a moment to think of what lifesaving or life-altering story is unfolding at that exact moment. Donate. And help save a life. Help to create a positive story from what could be a tragic or life-defining situation.

Community pop-up shop  by Jill Dickie

For the first time since beginning their tutoring programme, the Motivate Trust is opening a pop-up shop at their premises, 22 Normanby Street, for students to display and sell their handmade items, including woodwork, home baking and plant seedlings.

 Students Dakota Manuel-Williams and James McEwing shaping breadboards ready for the pop-up shop this week

The 12 students attending this semester have been studying for a level two NZQA qualification certificate in foundation skills, and with the pop-up shop, they will gain further knowledge in teamwork, numeracy, administration and retail skills. “We see this as something to make assessments as practical as possible. The students have grown the seedlings, done the baking and made shelves and breadboards for the shop,” said tutor, Deborah Steele. A silent auction is an additional fundraiser available both days, for

a handmade macrocarpa seat, donated by Motivate director, Glenn Henderson. The winner will be drawn on Wednesday afternoon. The shop will be open from 10am to 4pm on Tuesday, November 13 and Wednesday, November 14, and a sausage sizzle will be available. Visitors can also park their car for a car wash while they shop. Interested students between 16 and 19 years of age are invited to make contact to discuss enrollment for February 2019. Contact motivate. darg@gmail.com. 

Floral intents and purposes  by Jill Dickie

A distinct flair for creativity and a love for plants and flowers has evolved into a passion for Mamaranui resident, Karen Solly — a passion that has turned competitive. After a second place in the 2014 competition, Karen was determined to try again in 2018, and had her efforts recognised in winning the Bev Stevens Trophy in a Whangarei competition, Northland Designer of the Year, and also received the Colour Award for the same entry. Being judged for such things as design, colour, expression and originality keeps Karen on her toes. “No two designs can be the same; they have to be original and use plant materials only — no noxious weeds,” she said. Karen began her interest in floral art many years ago while living in the South Island, making bouquets for weddings, competitions and shows. With her husband, she moved to Mamaranui more than 20 years ago and had continued her interest while setting up and landscaping their property and gardens. The biggest rewards from competitions and shows began in 2010 when she won Northland Designer of the Year for the first time and qualified to attend the national

The Rumour wins national award  by Jill Dickie

Dargaville playwright, Deborah Steele, was surprised to win an award for her play The Rumour at the National TheatreFest and was humbled to be judged by a professional playwright. The Olga E Harding Award is designed to allow the playwright positive feedback on their writing, which will assist with any future writing and they also get to see a live production of their script on stage. The play has already been onstage in Dargaville and Taupo at regional competition level. She has written other plays and musicals, which have been very well-received. The Rumour is her third play written for a TheatreFest competition. The play is the story of a girl called Kate, who was bullied through social media, that has taken her own life. For parents and teachers familiar with the Northland Rescue Helicopter children’s books about choppers Lima and Juliet, a new book is set to be released this week called Mighty Mike to the Rescue. A book launch will be held at the Selwyn Park School in Dargaville this week to begin its promotion, and it will be available for ordering from the NEST website nest.org.nz. In the story, Mike the helicopter heads out on a mission to locate lost children in the Kai Iwi Lakes area. All proceeds from the series of books go to the Northland Emergency Services Trust who operate the Northland Rescue Helicopter. Book sponsors have donated two copies of the new books for Kaipara Lifestyler readers. Enter to win a copy by answering the following question: What age is the rescue helicopter service? Email comp@integrity.nz including your name and phone number. In 2017, the Kaipara District raised more than $46,000 for the annual appeal, making it the most generous area in Northland. “I could not believe it. Following on from the success of last year’s fundraiser appeal, Dargaville Ford is again hosting a breakfast with the More FM show on November 22, and Tangiteroria School is arranging a bistro evening at the Upper Wairoa Sports Complex in Tangiteroria on December 7. The Northland Rescue Helicopter Service has flown more than 20,000 missions since 1988 and has been instrumental in saving thousands of lives. The trust is an essential service to Northland due to extreme weather conditions, unsealed roading and difficult to access areas. RESTHOME & VILLAGE

The Maungaturoto Community Charitable Trust is undertaking to build a Dementia Care Unit attached to the current Riverview Rest Home in Maungaturoto. This will better enable the rest home to cater to the increasing needs of our community. Costs associated with this project are immense to say the least. To date the MCCT has spent close to $650,000 gaining the necessary consents, organising bank finance and getting the foundations completed. The Trust has raised a further $79,000 but require another $900,000 to complete the project.

I am pleased to support the MCCT with their current project and I will donate $250 to the Trust with every new listing I sign up. Terms and Conditions apply.

ADVERTORIAL

Feline fun in fairy fable Two ‘cats’ feature in the upcoming Otamatea Repertory Theatre production of Sleeping Beauty and their characters are as different as night and day. Kitty is the palace cat who watches over the young princess with a devotion usually reserved for canine companions. Then, there is Spindleshanks, the misguided sidekick of the evil fairy, Carabosse. In the enchanting fairy tale of Sleeping Beauty love triumphs over evil — even if it does take more than a hundred years. ORT is producing a pantomime version of Sleeping Beauty written by Ben Crocker, and directed by Brittany Dyer. The show features colourful characters, jokes by the bucket load, plenty of songs and lots to shout about as our heroes fight to keep the princess safe from harm. Colourful costumes and creative makeup will add to the theatre experience. There are six shows: November 23 and 30 at 7.30pm then November 24– 25 and December 1–2 at 2pm. The theatre in Maungaturoto is airconditioned with upholstered seating.

EFTPOS is available and plenty of free parking — with wheelchair access. Refreshments are served during the interval. Bookings are open at Tony’s and online at ort.org.nz. There is an opening night special for the show. Buy four or more tickets and receive a 20% discount. There must be a minimum of one adult in the group, and the discount is not available online. Visit Tony’s Lotto Shop or text Maura Flower on 022 354 2670.

Future employee education  by Jill Dickie

The Dargaville High School invites local businesses to participate in the 2019 Gateway programme if they can take a student to assist in transitional training between school and employment. The Gateway programme is funded by the Tertiary Education Commission and is designed for year 11 to 13 students, offering the opportunity to gain experience within active workplaces. The student becomes involved in an authentic working environment and is expected to achieve at least 20 NCEA credits during their time — achieved with specific papers that relate to the career pathway they have chosen. Dargaville High School Gateway programme organiser, Jocelyn Hodgson, says it can  be difficult finding employers willing to participate, due to busy workloads and health and safety requirements. “Some students excel, and we have many examples of the work experience leading to employment and apprenticeships; however, some students discover the job is not what they thought. This can be the first time a student has experienced a work environment, so they require guidance and support,” said Ms Hodgson.

Business owner Carl Adnitt from C A Motorcycles has worked with Gateway student Ethan Taylor

According to Ms Hodgson, the programme is well supported in Dargaville, and the school is grateful for the patience of employers who have occasionally had students that didn’t fit the role available. Businesses interested can contact Jocelyn Hodgson at gateway@ darghigh.school.nz or 09 439 7229 extension 725.

Welcome to Mangawhai Zonta young women’s award Tankful Mangawhai  by Jill Dickie

 by Jill Dickie

The Zonta Club of Mangawhai is inviting applications for its eighth annual young women’s award, which presents the winner with a 10-day youth development voyage on the Spirit of New Zealand.

Residential water tank monitoring can become a challenge of days gone by with a new business initiative from husband and wife team, Libby and Toby Evans. The concept involves connecting your water tank to your phone with a smart tank monitor and web application.

Applicants must meet specific criteria, including their age, location and ability to show leadership potential and be a reasonably confident swimmer. The award is made possible annually by the generosity of the local community through fundraising activities, and this year was funded by the recently held midwinter ball and the second chance scholarship. Last year’s winners, Eden Smith from Rodney College, and Holly Brunt from Otamatea High School, both commented that the voyage took them outside their comfort zones, but that they grew hugely in confidence and made lifelong friends. “We certainly noticed the obvious differences in them when they returned to speak to us after their voyage — they were so much more confident and selfassured than before,” said Zonta Club representative, Sue Poynter.

 Eden Smith from Rodney College, and Holly Brunt from Otamatea High School were winners of the 2017 Spirit of New Zealand voyage

Applications close on November 30 — forms are available from mangawhai@zonta.org.nz or text Sue on 027 555 6636 with your email address. 

 Tankful co-founders, Libby and Toby Evans, taking the guesswork out of water tank level monitoring

Upon moving to Mangawhai, Libby and Toby became frustrated with relying on tank water as they often struggled to work out how much water was in their tank and how long it would last. “We searched for a smart, affordable product — but found nothing suitable, so we decided to build our own,” said Toby. The primary purpose of the business is to decrease the negative impact of water shortages for people who live on tank water, similar to January 2017 when local water carriers were unable to refill locally — meaning carriers had longer drives so fewer people were getting water delivered and wait times lasted several weeks.

The app will allow the user to monitor water levels from anywhere, and consider the amount of water being used or wasted, enabling the homeowner to manage water stored effectively. Tankful is one of eight Northland startup businesses in The Pick:18’s Investment Ready competition selected for showcasing to angel investors, won a Supreme Award at The Pick:2017 at Northland Inc Business Ideas Awards and was a finalist in the Innovation category at the 2018 Northland Business Excellence Awards. Keep our rescue heroes flying

 by Andy Bryenton

IT’S NOT A TARGET

One of the best things about living in Northland is the wide-open countryside, the wild places where we can get close to nature, and the rugged coastlines with their opportunities for fishing, recreation and fun. Vital in such terrain — and in a region with far-flung rural communities — is a service to respond when people get in trouble far from healthcare services. The best and only answer comes from the skies, in the form of the Northland Rescue Helicopter. This month the team which keeps the blades spinning for this crucial emergency service is raising money to ensure that more lives are saved, and more critical missions are flown in the year to come. A big part of this initiative is a series of fundraising engagements in towns across the north — and on Thursday, November 22 it’s the turn of Dargaville. Once again, the generous folks at Dargaville Ford are stepping up to provide a home base for all the fundraising efforts, centred around a big breakfast alongside the team from More FM. Last year the townsfolk — and people from further afield — turned out in incredible numbers to stuff buckets full of donations for this worthy cause. They enjoyed a delicious cooked breakfast laid on by big-hearted sponsors, and of course to celebrate all the fine work that the Northland Rescue Helicopter does in saving lives and rushing those in need to the best in medical care. This year, Dargaville Ford boss Lindsay West and the team of volunteers he’s helped assemble hope to shatter records and

Showtime shines in Maungaturoto  by Andy Bryenton

What could be more fun than a classic Kiwi school gala — the food, the face painting, the bouncy castles, the entertainment and the carnival atmosphere? How about combining all that excitement with the sights and sounds of a classic car and bike show? It’s a winning combination and one that’s coming to Maungaturoto this November 25. To raise funds for an educational and fun school camp experience, the students and teachers of Maungaturoto Primary School have joined forces with a team of generous sponsors and a passionate group of local petrolheads to put on a show like no other. It will be the third annual Maungaturoto Car

and Bike show, and it’s set to be the biggest yet, with all sorts of classic, custom, vintage and downright awesome automobilia taking to the field to provide an eye-popping array of rolling artwork. Alongside the chrome, flames, big engines and artful restorations, there will be fairground attractions, market

stalls, games and competitions as well. Check out the strongman contest, try your hand at racing in virtual reality with the V8 supercar simulator, or enjoy a traditional spit roast lunch or a barbecue. There will be a huge charity raffle, a wheel changing speed trial, Lego Racers, and even those who vote for the people’s choice award for bestpresented car or bike go into the draw to win massive prizes. Top pick this year — a V8 hot lap experience with skilled racer Paul Manuell! Taking the automotive theme further, there will be a range of electric vehicles on site to allow visitors a glimpse of the future of motoring. In between appreciating all the cars and bikes on

display — over 150 in all — visitors will be entertained by the soulful sounds of White Feather and a spirited performance by Maungaturoto School’s own kapa haka group. It’s a day of great fun for a good cause, and for only a gold coin donation it’s great value as well. The organisers and all the kids at Maungaturoto Primary would like to thank their many generous sponsors for helping make this extravaganza possible — now it’s up to the public to come along and have a great time, making this a day to remember. It’s all happening from 10am on November 25, on the Maungaturoto Primary School field in Hurndall Street. Be there! 
