A force for Dargaville’s growth

Artist takes on the city

u by Paul Campbell

u by Ayla Miller

Three entities promoting the economic development of Dargaville are forging a close working relationship in a major thrust to capitalise on a ‘new vibrancy’ in the town.

With a mixture of nerves and excitement, Dargaville based artist Pauline Gough is heading to the big smoke, to hold an exhibition of her work in Auckland.

p Left to right: Darren Jones chairman Kauri Coast Promotions Society, Peter Boyd chairman Dargaville Business Forum, Allan Mortensen chairman Dargaville Community Development Board

“The Dargaville Business Forum, the Kauri Coast Promotion Society and the re-established Kauri Coast Development Board Inc, now renamed the Dargaville Community Development Board Inc, have different aims and objects but they support and complement each other,” said Allan Mortensen, current chair of the Dargaville Community Development Board. “Dargaville has operated its business associations and tourism promotions societies over the years mainly with volunteer labour. It is a model that takes passionate, enthusiastic people, but over a few years drains them of energy, as they also have to make a living and live a life. “History shows us that the Kauri Coast Development Board and the Kaipara Community Health Trust are two successful models that have worked for the community and have achieved much because they had a strong governance board and paid staff. “This is a model we will be duplicating with the Business Forum continuing to work with and support local businesses, the Promotions Society highlighting the Kauri Coast as a great destination, while the Development Board will focus on establishing revenue streams and obtaining grants to pay staff to assist

the volunteers working within those organisations. It’s about looking at the past and identifying what has worked, then doing more of it.” Peter Boyd, the Dargaville Business Forum chairman said: “There is a vibrancy in Dargaville at the moment, which is being partly caused by quite a few people looking for an alternative lifestyle and moving into town. Many are opening a business or buying an existing one. This has now created a window of opportunity for our town with a pool of fresh enthusiastic residents wanting to join with the existing members and get involved in making our town the best it can be.” He added the new Community Development Board “will give us the support we need to continue to grow. From a business perspective, we rely on a strong thriving community to keep local businesses growing. On the other side of this, to grow a strong community, we need businesses to keep the community engaged and valued.” Darren Jones from the Promotions Society says, “three groups coming together is a major positive for the town, community and the wider Kaipara area. It’s an opportunity to set aside any past differences to work together for the future.” ¢

open in mid-December. “It just seemed a really good opportunity to bring it north,” she says. Pauline has been holding an annual exhibition at the Funky Fish Cafe but due to its closure earlier this year she has had to make other arrangements and was able to secure a location at 27 Crummer Road, Grey Lynn, Auckland. The exhibition will be held from November 23–26 from 10am–6pm with the option of extending it another week if interest is high. ¢

“I like to do an exhibition every year and I haven’t done one in Auckland before,” she says. “I’ve called it an expressionist art exhibition because the paintings I’m taking have quite an expressionist style. Impressionism is what I started with but I like being a bit more expressionist and working with mixed media. “A lot of them are action paintings. There are quite a few race horse paintings, musicians and a few of my cows. They are quite colourful and energetic in the way I’ve painted them.” She says although she would rather be in her studio painting she does enjoy meeting people who like to talk about art and who are interested in her work. “It’s always nice to meet the buyers. I found it a little bit hard to part with some paintings at the beginning but now I find it exciting. It gives me a thrill that someone likes my work enough to put it on their wall and enjoy it.” She will display any remaining paintings from January 27 until February 8 at the new art gallery in Mangawhai, which is scheduled to

Field days plans take shape

Returning to roots

With changes to the event grounds and new blood in key roles, the Northland Field Days are shaping up to be bigger, more organised and professional according to Northland Field Days Incorporated Society president Lew Duggan.

u by Ayla Miller

After working and travelling extensively overseas, former Dargaville teacher Kathy Little, known to many as Mrs Tito, has returned home after 25 years of which the last two were spent in Bali, with many tales and a published book under her belt.

The society has held its 32nd annual general meeting which saw Northland Radio personality Charmaine Soljak take on the position of chair of media events, grant funding and sponsorship. Ms Soljak has 27 years of experience in radio and 18 of these in Northland so is familiar with Northlanders and the Field Days. Arapohue farmer Scott McInnes took on the property committee and he says he is keen to give back to an event that p The Northland Field Days Incorporated Society president Lew Duggan

brings so much to Dargaville. “We would like to develop the facilities into something which is an asset that can be used all year round.” Plans for the event are taking shape and event administrator Meagan Edmonds says people are booking sites well in advance. “Over 75 percent of our sites have already been booked and I believe this is due to our new online booking system and having plenty of information available on our website which means it’s easier and faster for exhibitors to sign up, allowing them to plan out their event earlier.” The Northland Field Days will be held in Dargaville from March 3 to March 5, 2016. ¢

Red tape made it difficult to teach in Bali even in a voluntary capacity, which eventually led to Kathy’s decision to move home. “At the end of the day, a place is about people, not about whether it has a great view,” she says. High school hospitality Small efforts get big results Set up at a cost of more than $600,000 two years ago, the Hospitality Academy at Dargaville High School has almost filled its intake of students for next year.

p The three staff from Dargaville High School’s Hospitality Academy — from left: Hospitality Academy Assistant Janice Peterson, Head of Department Prue Barnett, and Food and Nutrition teacher Mary Stewart

The operational café and teaching space takes just ten students who train for pre-trade entry level into the industry or go on to more intensive training at tertiary level while also doing practical work catering functions around Dargaville. Department head is cordon bleu chef, experienced commercial caterer and registered secondary teacher, Prue Burnett, who says few high schools can offer the vital Level 3 accreditation that the academy can provide. “To offer Level 3, the industry insists that a commercially experienced person is in charge of the teaching. Not many schools can combine the catering and chef background with registered teaching qualifications. Having this means our training is at the highest level.” Prue says the academy gets many requests for catering, often for quite large events. “This year we have done a formal dinner for the Rotary Club for more than 100 people. We recently did a very large funeral function at the Lighthouse Centre for more than 300, and just last week catered for another 300 odd at the Dargaville Veterinary Clinic’s special function for farmers.” She says such events, while overseen by teaching and support staff, are largely run by students. “The Dargaville Veterinary Clinic function

at the Town Hall involved eight students who did the whole event — a huge amount of work which they handled very well, earning high praise from the hosts and guests and involved vital handson experience including long hours on the job.” Students study all aspects of the industry from food and nutrition to logistics combined with critical hands on involvement. ASB staff will swap their tills for cakes and collection buckets this Friday, November 20 as they raise funds for their charity partner St John at their Dargaville branch. This coincides with the national launch of new toy ambulances which make up a 106 piece block set to fundraise for a new ambulance costing $200,000. St John director of customers and services Peter Loveridge says the toy will make an excellent stocking-filler as well as raising funds for the charity to buy a much needed ambulance. “St John really values the ongoing support of ASB. All money raised from the toy ambulances will go towards buying a new lifesaving ambulance for New Zealand communities,” Mr Loveridge says. ASB staff will also be talking about the St John supporter cards throughout the day as an idea for Christmas presents for friends and family. Local St John volunteers will also be on hand to host a sausage sizzle from mid-morning. ASB Northland Regional Manager Glen Hardham says the two organisations have a long-standing partnership and he is pleased to be involved in another initiative.

p One of the new St John toy ambulance’s gets assembled as the fundraising campaign is rolled out across the country

“It’s great to see the local arms of both ASB and St John coming together and solidifying that locally. We look forward to seeing locals coming and participating in the day’s festivities in support of St John and the necessary work they do both locally and throughout the country,” says Mr Hardham. The St John toy ambulances will be available for $15 at ASB branches nationally, from ASB True Rewards and www.asb.co.nz/stjohn ¢

Inspiring rural communities u by Ayla Miller

Funding supports Sportsville

As well as being guest speaker at a public meeting at the Lighthouse Function Centre in Dargaville, community revitalisation expert Peter Kenyon will address a business forum breakfast meeting at the Commercial B&B, on November 25 giving local business owners a chance to learn from the best and hear how they can help shape the future of their town. Mr Kenyon has formed a database of resources called Bank of I.D.E.A.S. which stands for Initiatives for the Development of Enterprising Actions and Strategies to assist small rural towns in revitalisation, and his talk will focus on what businesses can do to help. In a video explaining what he does, Mr Kenyon says most people think the future is somewhere they are going, whereas he believes the best way to predict the future is to create it. “The communities that are thriving are the ones that put themselves at the centre and begin to realise they are the masters of their own destiny. They are not in free fall, they are not waiting for outside forces — they become part of where we are actually going.” Dargaville Business Forum chairperson Peter Boyd says: “Hopefully this talk will inspire businesses to think differently about how they engage with customers.” Mr Kenyon has worked with over 1,600 communities around the world for the past 30 years aiming to find ways to stimulate community and economic renewal.

p Community revitalisation expert Peter Kenyon will share his knowledge with local business owners

He works under the premise that rural towns are attractive places to live and is motivated by the desire to create healthy, caring, inclusive, sustainable and enterprising communities and local economies. This talk will start at 6.45am and target small town businesses specifically, followed by a further open floor discussion from 8am for those able to stay longer. Entry is $10 per person and includes a continental breakfast. RSVP to dargavilleforum@gmail.com by 12 noon Friday, November 20. ¢

“This facility will provide benefit to all sporting codes currently and potentially using Memorial Park, and there is also ample room for the development of permanent petanque courts.” The facilities will cater to those involved with football, hockey, netball, petanque, rugby, rugby league and tennis. Mr Biddles says he is pleased with the way sports groups have rallied behind the project and calls for continued support. “The significance of the project is massive — one in eight people in the Dargaville and surrounding areas will benefit directly by use of the facility, and indirectly the whole area will benefit. We will definitely need the support of the community to make this facility a reality,

and look forward to the community getting in behind planned fundraising initiatives over the next 12 months,” he says. Memorial Park land is administered by Kaipara District Council who fully cooperate with the the project. Mr Biddles thanked the council for an initial $100,000 grant, as well as sports groups whose contributions created enough funding to apply to Foundation North. “We thank council for their support and look forward to working with them further to complete this much needed facility for the Kauri Coast area.” A further funding application to the NZ Lotteries Grant Board will be made early next year. ¢

DARGAVILLE LETS TALK ABOUT THE FUTURE

Dargaville Business Forum, Kauri Coast Promotions Society and Dargaville Community Development Board Presents

Peter Kenyon Peter Kenyon is a social capitalist and community enthusiast. Over the last three decades he has worked with over 1600 communities throughout Australia and overseas seeking to facilitate fresh and creative ways that stimulate community and economic renewal. He is motivated by the desire to create healthy, caring, inclusive, sustainable and enterprising communities and local economies. Peter is convinced that one cannot develop communities from the top down or from the outside in. It requires communities to build from the inside out, and for their members to invest themselves, ideas, assets and resources in the process. Peter created the Bank of I.D.E.A.S. (Initiatives for the Development if Enterprising Action and Strategies) to promote such a paradigm shift and assist with the necessary facilitation, ideas and skills.

A lifesaver is back

Inspiring female firefighters

A lifesaving rescue ring which went missing shortly after being donated to the local community eight months ago, is now back in place on the wharf at Tinopai in time for summer holiday harbour activity.

u by Ayla Miller

p From left to right: Gabriel Thompson with Saron and Jim Duffy at the blessing on Tinopai wharf

“We thought it had been tossed into the tide and was gone forever as it was last February when it disappeared” said North Kaipara Volunteer Coastguard member, Allan Crabb. “Then the police got in touch with us. It had been found during inquiries at a Kaipara address on other matters. Well, I reckon the police deserve a big vote of thanks from the whole community.” “We were extremely disappointed that anyone could interfere with a lifesaving device. The ring was was donated by local residents Jim and Sharon Duffy after attempts to have rescue rings stationed at Kaipara wharves failed to get district council support. “There have been so many incidents on the water that I couldn’t just sit back and do nothing,” Mr Duffy said at the time.

At a brief ceremony on the wharf last week, the ring was re-installed and then blessed by kaumatua Gabriel Thompson as Mr and Mrs Duffy looked on. “It is doubly important that the device is back at the start of summer,” said Mr Crabb. “We have the Tinopai school fishing contest coming up, and of course, the harbour gets busy with visitors and youngsters fishing off the wharf.” However, coastguard is also perturbed by another act of local vandalism. “Some fool has removed stainless steel bolts from the boat-launching walkway near the wharf,” said Mr Crabb. “This is mindless vandalism as well as theft, and very dangerous as it has caused a section of the walkway to collapse into the tide.” He added that a community watch was in place to further safeguard the facility. ¢

When three Ruawai College students noticed a distinct lack of women in the Volunteer Fire Service, they decided to do something about it, and set about crafting a calendar to raise funds for the Ruawai Fire Brigade.

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur, such as nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface or gurgling toilets taking time to empty. Good practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

Kingfish, gurnard, trevally, snapper and kahawai will all be sought by eager fishos as the contest kicks off on December 5. Not content with simply awarding prizes for monster examples of these species, the organisers also have plenty of spot prizes to spice up proceedings. Over the years the trophy fish have been caught in fair proportion from both the open water and off the beach,

making this an even playing field for all comers. This 27th King of the Kaipara builds on the successes of nearly three decades, and has evolved not only into a yearly institution on the northern fishing calendar, but also a fine way to showcase our region to the many visitors who take this opportunity to drop a line in the southern hemisphere’s biggest harbour. “We have been working hard on our new website which we think showcases our quirky gallery space and features all our member artists and crafters,” said committee member, Hanna Stevens. In preparation for the new season, the gallery is due for its bi-monthly refresh on December 1, closely followed by the Summer Fair on December 5, held on the premises. The fair will offer a variety of art and crafts along with white elephant, food and more. There will be a barbecue and Devonshire tea along with entertainment from buskers and a racing car simulator. The gallery has recently held two workshops by Elena Nikolaeva mostly funded by a community grant and were well attended. Community members are encouraged to come along although spaces are limited. “The workshops were so successful we are hoping to be able to hold more of these next year,” said Hanna. “We are always on the lookout for new members so if you think that might be you please pop in and have a look or email our secretary at whiterock@ outlook.co.nz.” For more information and updates about the gallery events visit the ‘What’s On’ page of the website whiterockgallery.co.nz or find them on Facebook. ¢

Battery powered backyard blitz

Busy times for new Commodore

u by Andy Bryenton

u by Andy Bryenton

First premiered at the Auckland Home Show, Husqvarna’s battery powered outdoor tools have taken some time to reach New Zealand. But it’s been worth the wait, as demo models showcase the sheer performance of this new range.

The new Commodore of the Northern Wairoa Boating Club is juggling business with community projects as summer approaches.

Battery power is clearly the way of the future — and it’s come a long way in recent years. The Husqvarna range incorporates chainsaws, brushcutters, trimmers, pruners and more, with similar output to the Scandinavian company’s petrol driven machines. That means

serious power, of the kind batteries simply could not sustain in previous years. Lithium-ion cells, of the same type used in the Porsche Spyder supercar, are deployed to great effect here. The main improvement over other battery power tools is not sheer RPMs though — it’s time. Extra charge means more time in the field, and that’s what Husqvarna offer. Demo models have touched down in New Zealand, with the full range coming on stream for 2016. But it’s well worth noting that the success of this battery power programme rests on a solid foundation of petrol powered efficiency — Husqvarna’s range of outdoor equipment has now become truly hybrid, with the best of the established and the innovative at once. ¢

At the same time he’s pushing hard to make sure his customers at Dargaville Diesel Specialists can hit the road, the campground. and the waterways this summer. In a service which parallels and complements p Northern Wairoa Boating Club Commodore Rodney Wilson is making sure locals are ship shape for summer his official role, he’s opening in the weekends leading up to Christmas, and sound. Northern Wairoa Football Club staff and the team at Dargaville Ford have been working hard to ensure that every possible vehicle is on the road in the hands of a keen test driver, but there are sure to be plenty of opportunities to get involved, take the driver’s seat and help boost the coffers of our local footballers. As any sporting club committee knows, fundraising is often a more strategic game than any epic clash on the pitch. This injection of generosity from Ford and the local community will help pay for gear, uniforms and more for the Dargaville based football club, who are more than happy to share the spotlight for two days with games promoting that other form of football — rugby union. It’s all in good fun, and it might just be a chance for one test driver to win a brand new Ford as well! ¢

But alongside the opportunity to test drive the latest offerings from one of the world’s most long-established auto brands comes the chance to pitch in and support one of our local sporting teams — the Northern Wairoa Football Club. The dedicated group who bring the ‘beautiful game’ to the north-west are going to be the big winners on the day, receiving a hearty fifty dollar donation for every test drive taken in one of Ford’s stable of 2016 models. That’s quite a tempting proposition, as the lineup includes not just firm favourites such as the Ranger ute — now in its brand new 2016 iteration — and the top selling Focus five-door hatch. This will also be a chance to get up close and personal with the last of the mighty Falcon V8s, and to welcome in their replacement at the top of the horsepower tree — the new and exciting sixth generation Mustang. Festivities begin on Friday, and will include games, prizes and a sizzling
