Commissioners sitting in Warkworth are now hearing submissions from the company in support of its mega-landfill plan with Fight the Tip submissions against the dump due to follow. Now FTT has released a letter from the Chinese-owned private company stating that its ‘purpose is to safeguard our beautiful environment through the sustainable management of our resources.’ The company’s managing director, Tom Nickels wrote: ‘It appears to me that the purpose of Fight the Tip and our purpose at Waste Management are aligned. We both want to make sure that the waste generated by our community does not impact on our environment and, in fact, is carefully managed to ensure future generations can continue to enjoy this beautiful country we live in. Waste Management is continuing to play an active role in developing and delivering solutions that will achieve this.’ Fight the Tip executive member, Michelle Carmichael, says she is disappointed in the response. ‘I’m curious about your statement that our purposes are aligned,’ she wrote this week. ‘I am representing a group who wish there to be no further risks to the surrounding environment,

UP TO 250*

our waterways and the Kaipara Harbour, in order to not compound the environmental issues we already have. ‘It is time to put the environment ahead of other commercial factors.’ The proposed tip for Auckland rubbish is located on a 1,000-hectare block owned by Waste Management. FTT, supported by Ngati Whatua and several district and city councils say any breach could poison the local catchment for the Hoteo River that feeds the Kaipara Harbour, with devastating consequences for the wider environment. Meanwhile, fellow FTT member, Sue Crockett says although the hearings have begun, people can still have their voice heard by contacting Sam Otter, at Auckland Council. “We need support, particularly from personal reactions to the tip proposal. The hearings are an opportunity for people to tell their own story. It’s very relaxed and not scary at all. Personal statements are important to the overall outcome,” she said. “There is plenty of room in the public gallery at the hearings, and it is in a good atmosphere.”

p Ninety-three years old and looking showroom fresh, Ford Model A sedans, coupes, convertibles and pickup trucks of the Bay of Plenty’s Model A Ford club sparked with chrome and polish as they visited Dargaville last week. Members of the club, a sub-group of the Bay of Plenty classic car enthusiasts, had stopped to regroup before pushing on to Rawene on the Hokianga, with their final destination — the very tip of the North Island. It’s been quite an odyssey for the classic Fords, but Henry built them reliably back in the old days, apparently; the beautiful old autos have not missed a beat and left Dargaville in convoy ready for a sunny day’s driving.

Holiday crowds prompt security review u by Paul Campbell

Security and safety measures at Taharoa Domain at Kai Iwi Lakes are to be increased with the area now fully booked between Christmas Day and January 11, with a major influx of holidaymakers expected across the summer.

p Kai Iwi Lakes are a summer holiday hotspot

With the closed national border, New Zealanders have to stay close to home. The Kaipara District Council recently engaged consultants to look at upgrading security and safety measures at Kai Iwi Lakes. Security company, FearFree Ltd, said due to Covid-related international travel restrictions, New Zealanders are now visiting our parks and recreational areas in far greater numbers. “Given Kai Iwi lakes proximity to Auckland, considerably higher numbers of visitors than usual are likely, which will increase the risk of conflict and safety-security related incidents,“ their report said. The review concluded that there are basic actions that can be taken to considerably improve staff safety and overall security. The area of highest risk

related to staff working alone, at night, with unreliable communications. Recommendations include upgrading handheld communications for staff to VHF radios, as cell phone coverage in the area is poor, and increased staff at night has been recommended. KDC spokesman Benjamin Hope said the recommendations had been accepted. “The implementation is operational work and the parks team have already begun with certain aspects of the proposal.” Kaipara Mayor Jason Smith says the expected influx of holidaymakers into Kaipara will mean more money coming in to benefit the local economy, with people from all over New Zealand expected. “It will be an interesting summer; they will get a great welcome here in Kaipara.” ¢

The new development at Mangawhai Central has moved a step further toward completion with the progression of a private plan change through council processes, now entering the phase of public hearings. However, residents’ group Mangawhai Matters is gearing up to oppose the current plan. “A strong team of experts have been engaged by Mangawhai Matters to contest the proposed plan change at Mangawhai Central,” says Mangawhai Matters president Doug Lloyd. “All these issues and the complete lack of consultation has raised a furore in Mangawhai. It is the main topic of conversation and given an enormous boost to the newly-formed Mangawhai Matters Society Inc,” says Mr Lloyd. “Our group has hired a strong team of six expert witnesses to support their submissions.” Written submissions were accepted for appraisal as part of the process of considering the private plan change necessary to complete the Mangawhai Central development, the largest the Kaipara has ever seen, and a major new housing resource in what has become an area of coveted real estate. However, members of Mangawhai Matters opine that the Kaipara

District Council have not considered the wider implications of increasing the town’s population in this consultation process. “Nowhere is there any indication that these issues have even been looked at by the council or their consultants,” says Doug. “The KDC response says that the consultation process has met the requirements of the Resource Management Act. What has really angered the community is that Mangawhai Central at one meeting stated ‘We will not do anything that the community does not want’ then followed with an application for a plan change without any communications whatsoever.” Submissions hearings are open to the public and are scheduled to run for three days from Monday, November 23 at the Mangawhai Domain Hall starting at 10am on day one and 8am for days two and three. The Mangawhai Matters group has also launched a website to present their case and attract local support, both moral and fiscal, at mangawhaimatters.com.

The ladies take charge A Kiwi tale for Christmas u by Paul Campbell

u by Andy Bryenton

Kaipara boaties are usually of the masculine kind, with caps denoting ‘skipper’ and ‘I am in charge’ when they set out on the harbour, but the first of the summer’s harbour fishing contests will change the dynamics.

Dargaville Little Theatre is preparing a treat for local families this festive season, with a unique retelling of a fairytale classic. Red and the Kuri premieres on November 26, with an all-local cast of children.

p Red and the Kuri puts the classic tale of Red Riding Hood in a Kiwi context, including this chorus of birds from the New Zealand forest p Ladies take the prizes in their own fishing contest

“We’re having our annual ladies-only fishing contest next Saturday, November 21,” says Pahi Boating and Fishing Club Commodore Darren Sheppard. “That means the blokes are relegated to driving the boat to where our ladies wish to fish. The men will also be expected to cut bait and otherwise assist the female fishers they have as their guests.” This fishing contest with a difference will be based at the clubrooms at Pahi, but with the women fishers able to

go anywhere on the Kaipara Harbour to seek a winning species. “There will be some great prizes for the heaviest snapper, kahawai and gurnard landed by the ladies for weigh-in by the 4pm cut-off time, with refreshments and food available for a family fun day out. “The weather outlook at this point seems pretty good, and we have tickets for the event on sale at the Paparoa Hotel and the service station, as well as Maungaturoto Autos and at the clubhouse on the day,” said Darren. ¢

Taking the traditional story of Red Riding Hood and the wolf and transforming it into a New Zealand environment has been a big undertaking with only limited time to polish the production to perfection, following a year of disruption and uncertainty for the performing arts. However, the cast of 20 local youngsters has worked extra hard to present a play full of fun, humour, colourful costumes and twists and turns, meaning that even those familiar with the original story will be kept guessing until the end.

The original script was written by director Deborah Steele. She has a long history of success in the local theatre company. She has assembled a talented crew to bring her vision of a totally Kiwi Red Riding Hood to life. Shows will take place on the evenings of November 26 and 27, and twin matinees in the afternoons of November 28 and 29. It’s a family show for the holidays, with plenty of laughs and action for both children and grownups. Tickets are on sale at Dargaville’s Sewing and Curtain Centre now for all four performances. ¢

Nurses take to the streets Dam build commences u by Andy Bryenton

u by Andy Bryenton

A long-running struggle for pay parity with hospital nursing staff has seen Dargaville nurses come out on strike last week, with the promise of more disruption to come if negotiations cannot be established.

Work has begun on a series of long-awaited dams in the Kaipara and wider Northland. It’s the mission of the Te Tai Tokerau Water Trust, and changes to the government following the general election have not altered their focus or scope of works.

p Striking nurses in Dargaville — pay parity with hospital nurses is an ongoing issue in the profession

This new round of strikes continues long-running industrial action taken by clinical nurses; those who work with GPs and doctors rather than in hospitals. Despite having identical qualifications, the two groups receive different pay. “We’re front line workers, doing a tough job,” said one picketing nuse in Dargaville. “The government has money for other things, but not to address this matter.” Another of the group who gathered outside Dargaville’s Countdown Supermarket added: “We do a difficult job, and the justification that we are not paid directly by the government, so they should not be able to set equal pay is a farce.” Members of the

public were vocal in their support as the nurses gathered signatures on a large white tablecloth and explained their case. The pay difference is in the vicinity of 10 per cent; an amount that’s a contentious point to the nurses as the minimum wage and unemployment benefit both rise. When asked if they believed that the mandate for a new Labour government would help their case, the overall mood was downbeat. The nurses on the picket line predicted more rolling strikes to continue to highlight their plight. “Their focus is on other things. One with more publicity,” said one striker, offering little hope that this dispute will see productive mediation this side of Christmas. ¢

p Stakeholders celebrate the beginning of work on a series of dams for the mid north and Kaipara; though Shane Jones was defeated in the recent election, work proceeds apace

Construction began in October on an access road, which will allow construction of the 750,000 cubic metre Matawii reservoir, the first in a series planned for the mid north. The trust also hopes to construct as many as three reservoirs in Kaipara. Trust chair Murray McCully said that combined, the schemes would allow for up to 7,000ha of new horticultural development within Northland, as well as be available to bolster existing municipal supply. “We are all acutely aware of the problems faced in the north through water scarcity. Construction of

the Matawii reservoir is the first step in a larger water storage scheme that represents a once in a lifetime transformational opportunity for Tai Tokerau,” McCully said, adding that the Matawii reservoir would be operational towards the end of 2021, with Kaipara reservoirs to follow. Economic analysis had indicated provision of the water storage schemes could generate an increase in economic activity of $67 million per annum in the mid north and $83 million in the Kaipara and could create up to 880 new jobs across both regions. ¢

Kai Iwi lake in world study u by Paul Campbell

Lake Taharoa near Dargaville is one of two Northland dune lakes that are part of a ground-breaking international study to measure the presence of microplastics with the results expected to help protect waterways from the emerging pollutant. Tiny pieces of plastic waste, often invisible to the naked eye, are created when plastic items break down. They also come from car tyres, synthetic clothes and fishing nets and are washed into waterways through rain and water run-off. Northland Regional Council is working with NIWA to contribute to the Galactic project. A two-year global study on microplastic levels in lakes that are affecting animals, birds and kaimoana but had not yet been measured in New Zealand’s freshwater systems. The project involves gathering water from the surfaces of 54 lakes in 22 countries. NRC freshwater scientist Manas Chakraborty says monitoring officers took samples from the 198ha Lake Taharoa in Kaipara’s Kai Iwi Lakes group and the 56ha Lake Ngatu in the Far North. “No one knows how microplastics affect freshwater animals, because this hasn’t been studied in-depth before. However, several of them are filter feeders so microplastics can easily accumulate in their systems,” he says.

p Some dune lakes are home to freshwater mussels that could be impacted by microplastics

NRC’s Deputy Chair Justin Blaikie, says: “Microplastics are not part of our standard water-quality measurements, but we already know they’re an emerging contaminant. We don’t know how much of this pollution the environment can deal with, and how we can actually treat the pollution. This research will build our knowledge so we can be prepared and put measures in place.” ¢

Enviro Schools Water for Life

Kaipara Kai Hub Update

Ruawai Water treatment plant played host to a number of local school kids as part of the EnviroSchools Water for Life programme last week. As part of the programme run by the Northland Reginal Council the students, looked at the Salt Marsh wetland in Paparoa, and the efforts being undertaken to prevent Kauri Dieback. Their time at the Ruawai Water filtration plant got to give the kids an up close look at how raw water is treated before it can be consumed by people and pets.

The Kaipara Kai Hub is providing on-the-ground support that enables land to be used to its best potential. The Hub is managed by Northland Inc, and is part of Kaipara Kai, one of four KickStart projects led by Kaipara District Council and paid for by the Provincial Growth Fund. Spring has been busy for the Kaipara Kai Hub. Last month Matt (Kai Hub Manager) and the team from Plant and Food Research went out and planted peanuts at three trial sites – Te Kopuru, Ruawai, and near Kai Iwi Lakes. The soil temperatures of over 18 degrees were optimal for planting. Kaipara Kai Hub and the growers will be closely monitoring the peanut growth at the sites, and harvest is expected at the end of summer. More updates to come! Our recent Food Innovation events with Professor Hamish Grow from Massey Business School, Amos Palfreyman from Food HQ, and Rural Leaders were held across the district. These were supported by funding from AGMARDT. We had a great response from the participants and by the end of the workshops attendees certainly had a taster into the mindset of a food consumer and even designed their own prototype for a new food product. The workshops highlighted a need to support access to value chains and pathways to market for rural and regional food businesses.

Students learn about the treatment processes at the Ruawai Water Treatment Plant.

Baylys Beach walkway construction Construction is continuing on the new Baylys Beach walkway. The work is supported by a $300,000 grant received through the Tourism Infrastructure Fund. The new timber walkway, which starts opposite Chases Gorge Bridge, will improve pedestrian safety in the area. Work is on track to be finished in January 2021. At times there will be traffic management in place and the public toilet will be closed while work in its immediate vicinity is completed. For any queries please email parks@kaipara.govt.nz

Misfortune at a coal mine

9

u by Brian Eastwood

There would have been a feeling of optimism in Northern Wairoa when the Minister of Mines ordered in the difficult years of 1920 that Avoca Coal mine should immediately be worked. Responding to a request from Dargaville’s mayor for the government to take over the mine, the minister wrote: ‘as a result of exhaustive and extensive investigations as to the quality and quantity of the coal, the owners have been notified that they must proceed with mining. In this case, the coal should soon be available for the market.’ The mine covered an area of almost two square kilometres about 10 kilometres from Tangowahine wharf. Coal had been discovered at Avoca as early as 1914. However, because of transport costs, nothing much was done about recovering it, although most homes of that era relied on coal and coke for cooking and warmth. Avoca coal was reported to have excellent ‘steaming qualities’ similar to Taupiri coal. Even so, it was not until 1929 that serious efforts were made to work the mine. In that year, 200 men were out of work when Hikurangi mine north of Whangarei was flooded, and they decided to try and open Avoca mine. At a meeting with Hobson County Council, their spokesman asked for concessions on usual road royalties that would be charged for coal carted over county roads. In a surprisingly short-sighted reply, the council at first said no.

Eventually, Hobson County Council did see reason and agreed to reduce charges when the miners offered to build and maintain the three-mile road that was needed to access the mine. So the road royalty was reduced from sixpence a mile to twopence, and a £30 contribution was made toward the side road. The coal would be carted to Tangowahine wharf but over a poor road. The plan was to then barge the coal 13 kilometres downriver to Dargaville. It was calculated that 50 tons would be produced each day and the first load out of the mine was delivered to Northern Wairoa Dairy Company at Mangawhare on September 5 1929. All went well for another year until a man was killed when the handle of a winch flew off and struck him on the neck. Then after two years of successful mining, complete disaster struck, and all was lost. When a fire broke out, sometime during the weekend of March 30 1933, the roof timbering burnt causing the roof to collapse. Many layers of rubble covered the tram lines, pumping equipment and all their gear. Everything had been destroyed with only a huge 13-metre wide sunken area to show where the mine had been. Fortunately, a small outcrop had been opened up that was worked by

authorities and considerable misfor tune, a great economic boost for Northern Wairoa was lost. However, now in 2020, there is no domestic market for coal and little desire to burn it into our environment. ¢

Despite high average annual rainfall across Northland, a lack of storage means much of this water can’t be retained for use at times of shortage. Te Tai Tokerau Water Trust is developing a Community Water Scheme that provides water storage reservoirs and a distribution network on the northern Pouto peninsula in the Kaipara.

SHOP AND WIN Summer of movies beckons u by Andy Bryenton

SANTA PHOTOS

Dargaville’s Anzac Theatre is gearing up for a hot summer of cinematic treats, as a strong musical theme carries moviegoers into the festive season. With new state of the art projection equipment installed, the ‘best little cinema in New Zealand’ is prepared to welcome guests from all over the country. There’s a big tourist season ahead with many of our fellow Kiwis looking north for a holiday break. It is, in large part due to international travel restrictions still hovering over the tourist industry thanks to the worldwide Covid emergency. Another knock-on effect of the pandemic has been a noticeable shift in the entertainment industry. Not only are more interesting, artistic and small-budget local films being made than blockbuster CGI-packed star-fests, there’s also been an insular trend, which our local cinema supporters are keen to reverse. During lockdown, when it was impossible to visit the cinema, many Kiwis got into the habit of watching reruns or binge-watching television series as an alternative. The Anzac cinema team is keen to remind patrons that there’s nothing quite like the big screen; especially in a comfortable and specialised cinema, like in Dargaville. To get people back in seats they’ve launched a special $10 Wednesday deal with reduced ticket prices and booked some very interesting movies indeed for the summer season.

SHOP AND WIN Santa’s travel dates shared u by Andy Bryenton

The big man in red is planning his Christmas visits to the Kaipara already, indicating several locations where he and his helpers will be out spreading seasonal cheer this November and December. While it’s not a full list, there may very well be more chances to meet Santa announced as we approach Christmas Day, these dates are locked in for festive fun. Dargaville starts things off with festivities on December 5, beginning with the town’s annual Santa Parade, this year themed A Kaipara Christmas. Rolling in from 11am and finishing just on lunchtime, this parade will feature the North Pole’s busiest toymaker in all his red and white splendour. A week later, on December 12, Christmas in the Gardens will host a feast of song and spectacle celebrating the season; fun for the whole family from 6pm to 8pm. In Mangawhai, Santa would like to thank one of the folks at the top of the ‘nice list’. John Phillis has been busy with his ‘festive elves’ in local businesses, promoting a huge Santa Parade December 16, which will end up at the Mangawhai Activity Zone with a visit from Saint Nick himself. It all starts at 10am and runs until 11.30am, with plenty of time afterwards to enjoy the east coast seaside and sunshine. Maungaturoto will celebrate the season on December 19 with a parade taking to the main street at 4pm, then winding its way along to the Maungaturoto Primary School where a full-on festive festival will take centre stage. Look out for Santa Claus as the star attraction among many others.

In the meantime, look out for great ideas for picking up a present or two; many market days fill the calendar between now and December 25. A special note must be made of the triumphant return of Dargaville’s Twilight Markets, bigger and better after their very first event on Labour weekend saw big crowds and bigger appetites clear the barbecue at the Northern Wairoa Boating Club. There will be even more stalls, entertainment and delicious food on offer this November 20 from 5pm. ¢

We all know that a Kiwi Christmas is different from the wintertime festivals celebrated by our friends and relatives in the northern hemisphere. However, there are many traditions we take for granted as Christmas lore, without knowing that they come from many different lands and cultures, all of which contribute to our holidays. Aside from the simple fact that Christmas celebrates the birth of the most influential religious teacher from Israel, many other countries come into the mix. The Christmas tree was first worshipped by Vikings in Norway, representing the ‘world tree’ Yggdrasil, and became part of German folk traditions as Christianity spread across Europe. The English gained this tradition when successive generations of their royal family married into from German and Dutch royal houses. Stockings hung by the fire were already a tradition when the Night Before Christmas was penned in 1823. Legend has it that Saint Nicholas would drop coins down chimneys, and it could be caught in the long stockings most

people wore in olden times if they were left out to dry by the fire. Real-life Saint Nick was the patron saint of pirates as well as a generous giver during the holidays. So, in the 1600s and 1700s, real pirates did give small gifts of gold this way, angling to gain the protection of the saint from shipwreck. Sailors would wake on Christmas to find that some anonymous crewmate had tucked coins in their socks left out to dry by their hammocks. The first eggnog was made in 1607 in Jamestown, in colonial America. The harsh winter had reduced the pilgrims to trying all kinds of things to eke out their supplies. Mixing eggs for protein with milk, sugar and spiced rum made a drink that warmed and sustained these early

settlers. It became a tradition, with the ‘nog’ part of the word being an early synonym for ‘grog’, any kind of homemade liquor in sailor’s talk. Lastly, there’s kissing under the mistletoe, the oldest tradition of Christmas we have left. Druids since the days of Stonehenge believed the plant to have magical powers and would gather it from sacred groves to invoke the blessing of the forest gods. When people got married, it was under a mistletoe-hung oak branch, at northern winter solstice; just three days before Christmas. The ancient tradition survived the Romans, Saxons, Vikings, Normans, three changes of modern Christianity and even modern commercialism to be a well-known piece of holiday lore today. ¢

A harvest of goodwill u by Andy Bryenton

Grow Paparoa are a newly formed group of passionate volunteers who have brought a new angle to the town’s shared garden space.

u by Andy Bryenton

When the Breast Cancer Foundation’s iconic vintage caravan Pinkie needed a hand to continue its mission of health awareness, Kaipara locals pitched in to help.

p Just some of the Grow Paparoa team; giving back to the community, sharing a sense of fellowship, and seeing their efforts grow are all reasons they give for joining up

Delivering workshops on home gardening as well as free produce for the needy, this group has grown from unusual ‘seeds’ of inspiration. Grow Paparoa is a natural progression from the town’s previous Arty Fartys group, who offered all manner of arts and crafts opportunities. Founded by acclaimed local ‘good sort’ Anne Shanks, who was named as such on television in 2016, the aim was to make the best use of the building and grounds, with a name change and a new focus on gardening. “Which is not to say we won’t also be looking at arts and crafts in the future,” says Grow Paparoa spokesperson Jan Dallas. Treasurer Jenny agrees, saying “a lot of our work was about growing, even

back then. Growing self-esteem and growing skills. Hence Grow Paparoa covers it all.” Growing is the name of the game for the group of approximately 15 friends and volunteers who tend the large garden beds, delivering fresh produce to the local food bank weekly. Local companies and organisations have jumped in to help, supplying everything from bulbs and seeds to fertiliser and more. There’s even alpaca manure to help grow exotic fruit and veggies. The Paparoa County Depot Trust has been especially helpful, assisting in purchasing pumps and water tanks, and now a mulcher to help recycle garden waste.  ¢

p Local help kept the Breast Cancer Foundation’s pink caravan on the road when a visit to the north encountered mechanical trouble

What began as a simple trip down from Rawene, towed by a volunteer from the Motor Caravan Association, became an occasion for alarm when loud squeaking noises were heard from underneath. The staff onboard are breast care nurses, not mechanics. So after setting up in front of The Warehouse in Dargaville, they enquired with locals as to who could diagnose the fault. “We’d like to give a big shout out to Marcel Motors for their hospitality and expertise,” said the nurses. They were

swiftly towed across the road to the big red and black workshop, where the caravan was hoisted and diagnosed. “When we asked Marcel to send us the invoice for his work, he refused, insisting that we were providing a community service,” the representatives from the NZBCF said. They went on to host a second successful day of information sharing outside Dargaville’s Countdown Supermarket last Friday after the Motor Caravan Association hosted Pinkie at its riverside facility for the night. ¢

The toughest test on two wheels u by Andy Bryenton

Some motorcyclists speak of Andy Carlile’s 7 minutes 10-second hot lap of the Nurburgring in Germany on a 12-year-old Yamaha R1 in terms of reverence. Others are in awe of Peter Hickman’s conquest of the Isle of Man TT circuit, topping out at 217 kilometres an hour. Still more insist that our own Burt Munro is the king of two-wheeled speed, having taken a home built Indian Scout to the edge of performance. However, when it comes to gruelling tests of both speed and grit, there are few more punishing than the Baja rally. This year, amid Covid concerns, which saw the route changed and the dates flipped, the Baja 500’s Pro Moto Unlimited class was won by Mark Samuels, onboard a Honda. To understand the chaos, dust, noise and ruggedness of desert motorcycle racing, recall that covering just such a race was what veteran sports journalist and writer Hunter S Thompson famously failed to do, kicking off the adventures in Las Vegas, which became perhaps his most famous book. It’s hot, dangerous, physically demanding and above all, a long, long road through some of the most inhospitable terrain on Earth. Samuels and his SLR Honda team were the people for the job. However, the native of Yucca Valley, California is a seasoned veteran of desert racing, with eight Baja titles

to his name covering the 250, 500 and 1,000-mile courses. This year, he blitzed the 500 in 9 hours 39 minutes and 43 seconds. A long time behind the handlebars by anyone’s reckoning, and even longer when you’re blasting across the desert flat out. There was only one kind of bike that the team could pick from Honda’s lineup to do it; the latest CRF450X. This model has been dominant in the Baja arena since 2006. Its light, durable design makes it a favourite for those who need more than maximum power during a 30-minute motocross race. The big fuel-injected single cylinder of the CRF450X is liquid-cooled to handle desert heat. Its aluminium frame and six-speed transmission combine to provide nimble agility across all kinds of terrain. It also helps that the whole bike weighs in at 125kgs. The punchline? If you’re intent on hitting the trails here, why not try the bike that can dominate the harshest race on the planet? Fast, reliable, and light make for a fun combo that won’t let you down. ¢

Taking it to the extreme

IT’S NOT A TARGET

When a company goes from a small shed on a rural property in Whakatane to international acclaim and reach in a couple of decades, you know they have their formula right. That’s precisely the story of the rise of Extreme Boats, a Kiwi company making big waves with their aluminium vessels.

towing skis and biscuits or just exploring the maritime environment. Perhaps the best way to get on board an Extreme 545 is to win one; though, of course, the option to buy one of these Kiwi-built boats will remove the aspect of chance. Hunting and Fishing is giving away a fully kitted out 545 this summer, and also a Toyota Hilux to tow it, or indeed, to get up to its own adventures. Enter the draw for one or both by gearing up for summer adventures at your local. ¢

Optimised to take advantage of the many new-generation 70–110hp outboards on the market today, customers have been extremely pleased with the way the 545 lets them get straight out onto the water with minimal fuss. So much so that it’s become a bestseller for the Extreme Boats’ brand. Despite its proud labelling as an anglers’ boat, the 545 seems just as much at home as a recreational vessel,

Shimano

Extreme Boats caught the turning of the tide as aluminium came to equal and even exceed fibreglass in maritime construction; offering lower towing weights and the ability to weld vital components into place for sheer long-term durability. With its shed-based beginnings now far behind, and recall that both Lamborghini and Honda, to name a couple, began in sheds, Extreme Boats is in full control of the whole build process from design to welding and fabrication, painting, upholstery — the works. It’s this attention to detail, which has produced the successful 545 Sportsfisher. It’s a boat that offers a perfect balance between ease of handling on the water and the trailer. Extreme Boats call this a perfect introduction to the boating life, with its predictable and stable character making it easy to master. A flooding keel system makes it even more stable at rest, reducing rocking and chop on those breezier days. It’s spacious enough for a few mates to enjoy a day’s fishing, as the name suggests, but at 5.5 metres it’s no behemoth to manage when it’s time for precision manoeuvres.
