Second chance surgery for Kaipara  by Paul Campbell

Kaipara residents who have been declined for surgery through the public health system now have the chance of an alternative avenue for treatment. A charitable trust scheme which covers the costs for people needing to have surgery has been extended geographically. Northlink Health’s funding provides for operations based out of the Rodney Surgical Centre in Warkworth and the services will include Kaipara residents until the end of the current financial year. This follows a meeting between Dr Scott Davidson of the Dargaville Medical Centre and Debbie Evans of the Kaipara Community Health Trust, to work out the finer details. Also involved is Peter Carter, general manager of Northlink Health. “Since August 2011, 116 people have benefited from this sponsored surgery, costing approximately $320,000 from Northlink Health Charitable Trust,” Ms Evans said. “For example, procedures performed have included cataracts, hernias, varicose veins, knee arthoscopy, skin lesions, endoscopy, gastroscopy and colonoscopy.  Peter Carter, of Northlink Health (left), and Dr Scott Davidson of the Dargaville Medical Centre “There is a basic criteria involved and working to bring additional health benefits to the Kaipara this includes that the person concerned is currently on a waiting list for an appointment for surgery need simply to contact their GP and ask to be considered for through the public health system or, in fact, treatment has this charitable surgery project.” Ms Evans says coverage was extended to Kaipara after a been declined.” Ms Evans added that ACC will not provide any treatment chance discussion with Mr Carter. “Now the scheme is available here, Kaipara people need cover, either in full or in part, and a patient must not have medical insurance that would cover treatment or indeed the to be proactive within the guidelines laid down, and take the initiative of seeing their doctor in the first instance. means to pay for treatment in the private health sector. “In addition they need to hold a community services card, We are looking at ways to extend this service beyond next be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident and reside year, and it is possible that in the future some treatments in North Shore, Rodney, Kaipara or the Whangarei/Northland will be available in Dargaville. Until then, patients will need to travel.” area. She added that Mr Carter had personal links to the “This is a one time opportunity and does not include anyone who has already received treatment under Northlink Kaipara, another factor which influenced the extension Health’s charitable funding. Those qualifying for treatment of treatment.

The Dargaville Art Group annual exhibition marks a milestone this year as they commemorate their 40th birthday. The group began in 1972 and was founded by Catherine Brough, an artist, whose husband was the Minister of the Methodist Church. “We used to meet once a week at an old derelict house which stood where the church car park now is,” says artist, Marama Ingle who has been a member since the early 70s. She has enjoyed the companionship of like minded artists and says it has been a supportive environment to create art. “We take our lunch and sit, create art and chat, we help each other with any challenges we may be facing with our work.”

She says the group holds fond memories of taking bus trips to art galleries and often they have tutorials with well known artists who help broaden their scope and incorporate new ideas into their work. Her spare room is now ‘a mess’ of water colour paintings and craft work in the lead up to the exhibition starting on November 29, at 104 Victoria Street, Dargaville. It begins at 5pm with light refreshments supplied and continues on Friday, from 10am until 4pm, then on Saturday 10am to 1pm and again on December 8, at 10am to 1pm.

 Dargaville Kea Scouts proudly display their trophy and certificate won at the National Kea Day held in Whangarei recently for a ‘build a playground for bugs’ challenge. Their winning bug playground took the eleven Keas three weeks to construct and consisted of a ferris wheel, seesaw, bug-size swings, soccer pitch, merry go round, a lake with a boat — and they even grew grass for the bugs. The Keas also had live insects but they were too shy to play during judging, so they had plastic models as backup to show how the equipment worked.

Community rallies to fight court decision

Local to head Methodist Church  by Kim Munro

 by Rose Rees-Owen

Community groups have joined forces to form a steering committee to oppose the Dargaville District Court becoming a ‘hearings only’ court early next year.

 Dargaville litigator, Darrell Heart speaking at the protest opposing the Dargaville District Court becoming a ‘hearings only’ court early next year.

Kaipara Grey Power, Farmers of New Zealand, Justices of the Peace, and Hammonds Lawyers are among the groups uniting to fight the decision. They plan to send an invitation to the Minister of Courts, Chester Borrows and to local politicians to hold a meeting and voice their concerns against court services being cut. The group formed at a protest meeting organised by Kaipara Grey Power recently who collected 900 signatures and are expecting over 1,000 and will send a letter to the ministry as well as local politicians outlining why the court services should remain as is. Concerns raised at the protest included loss of registry services and ability to hold unscheduled bail hearings, petrol expenses travelling to the closest court in Whangarei, possible loss of family support for the defendants, as well as losing up to four policemen in Northern Wairoa while transporting alleged offenders to court. Northland MP, Mike Sabin, was absent from the protest but said that it is not about ‘cutting services’ but changing how people access them. “It’s a misconception that you still need to go to the court counter to

3

access most court services, when in fact most services can be accessed over the phone, over the Internet, or by post, often with better results than if you did go into court.” He said he had spoken at length with the Minister of the Courts and was assured that changes will not jeopardise access to justice having assessed ‘hearings only’ courts in Walkworth and Ruatoria. “Change is always unsettling, especially when it involves something of symbolic value to the community like the courthouse.” Litigator for Hammonds Lawyers, Darrell Heart said at the protest that it was fair to say that with modern technology, services can be done online but many of his clients are computer illiterate and don’t use broadband. JP, Eric Smitton, added that the Northern Wairoa covers a large area and areas in Pouto do not have cell phone reception or broadband coverage. Chair of the Kaipara District Council Commissioners, John Roberston, said he will relay community concerns to the Ministry of the Courts and is happy to facilitate a meeting between the steering committee and the ministry.

Well-known Kaipara resident, Reverend Rex Nathan, has been inducted as President of the Methodist Church of New Zealand at a recent service held at St Paul’s Cathedral in Wellington. The recent ceremony marks the beginning of a two year role as President. “I now have an idea how things are structured as I have had a year as president elect to learn a bit more. I’m very excited, there will be challenges along the way but I’m looking forward to learning more and there are always previous presidents to liaise with,” says Rex. As head of the Methodist Church’s national body, he will attend many parish events throughout NZ as well as a conference in Tonga, a workgroup in Papua New Guinea and a President’s convention in Australia later this year. Rex moved to Dargaville with his family as a young boy. He was baptised in the Methodist Church and attended the local primary and high school. He was manager of the ANZ Bank in Dargaville for 23 years until his retirement in 2010, having spent 46 years in the banking industry.

Please support White Ribbon Day! “Council fully supports White Ribbon Day, and I have nothing but respect and admiration for local Dargaville organiser Tina Stewart and the work she does in bringing this problem out into the light.’’ Chairman of the Kaipara District Council Commissioners, John Robertson, says violence against women is unacceptable. This violence often extends to the children who are our most vulnerable and unfortunately it is a cycle that often repeats itself in the next generation. We need to break the cycle.

Over 24,000 foodies attended the Taste of Auckland Festival last weekend exhibiting the crème de la crème of cuisine and among the top restaurants was the vibrant Kaipara stand putting the region on the map.

White Ribbon Day is about changing attitudes and behaviours. Violence is not okay — it never was and it never will be. White Ribbon Day isn’t about playing the blame game it’s about us stopping to think about how we can make a difference. How we can reach out to those who need it rather than to condone what is happening by pretending we don’t see it or that it isn’t our problem. It is our business and it is our problem. We can make a difference and it just might be the difference between life and death. I would ask you all to think about how you can make that difference.”

“The feedback has been fantastic so many people have told us that we have the best stand with the friendliest people,” says exhibitor Liz Holsted from Tara Lodge Tamarillos. Lochiel Estate Wines, Millars Winery, Chappel Olive Oil, Purple Monkeyfinger Vodka and the Long Flat Bacon Company were also showcasing and Liz said that the businesses had been very supportive at promoting each other. “A few of the exhibitors had their own stands last year but it’s great to be all together as a group — we work really well together.” She expects a spinoff of increased tourists to Kaipara and says she has

been telling Aucklanders what people in Kaipara already know — that there is a wonderful array of food, wine and accommodation experiences not far from the city. Mary Keliher designed the colourful and interactive stand complete with maps and brochures about the Kaipara region and the Mangawhai Information Centre was there to help with any questions. “A lot of people don’t know where the Kaipara is — so it’s great to be able to promote ourselves and we’ve been absolutely flat out since we got here,” says Jean Goldschmidt from the centre.

URGENT NOTICE - Council changes threaten private property rights

The Northland Regional Council (NRC) is currently “consulting” with the community about controls to limit what you can and can’t do on your own private property. You may be one of the 4400 landowners affected! rd Submissions close Monday, 3 December! You need to act now!

The NRC has taken on this new initiative after the Whangarei District Council (WDC) twice failed to do so following strong public opposition. Their first attempt was in 2006, which at the time local MP Phil Heatley described as...“an appalling abuse of planning powers”. He went on to say... “Council staff are downgrading the freedoms of private landowners simply by drawing lines on paper. These are lines drawn by 22-year old graduates straight out of university who have no comprehension of how the real world works.” In 2011 the council again tried to impose their restrictive controls over arbitrarily drawn “outstanding” landscapes. That too failed. They backed down after being confronted by hostile landowners. It’s now 2012 and councils, including the Kaipara District Council, are once again proposing to designate large areas of land for protection, from you! As Phil Heatley stated in 2006, should they succeed landowners are likely to face restrictions on such everyday

rural activities as fencing, minor land clearance, animal stocking, fertiliser use and building. Cr Ian Walker from the NRC, who once championed private property rights on behalf of farmers, was reported as saying their proposal was a “win, win”. We fail to see how anyone wins when rights and freedoms are taken from private property owners and given to bureaucrats and planners. Unfortunately we must now yet again make a stand against the relentless environmental activists working within our local councils, and do what your elected councillors have consistently failed to do, and that is to stand up on behalf of private landowners. Following very successful meetings in the north we now have some +300 landowners prepared to fight this latest attack on private property rights. The Landowners Coalition is committed to protecting landowner rights against activist groups like DOC and the Environmental Defence Society who are likely to challenge the NRC’s proposals, but demanding more control not less! That’s why we need to be at the table when the new rules are written. This madness will only be stopped if you join us and stand up for your rights. Hear more at the public meeting to be held in Maungaturoto, Wednesday the 28th of November. For more information contact Bob Syron, Convenor, Landowners Coalition, ph 0274 737 914 or email bob@pursuit.co.nz.

“Our carnival got cut short due to wind and rain — so we want to give people the opportunity to jump that didn’t get to do it last time,” says tandem master with 16,000 skydives to his name, Rob Pine. Based at the Otamatea Aero Club at Ruawai, there will be tandem skydives from 12,000ft, student skydive training, fun sports jumps along with an impressive display of swooping along the ground.

From Auckland, he spent his weekends coming to Kaipara and interviewing locals as well as becoming a regular at the Dargaville Museum going through old newspapers researching past cinemas in Dargaville, Ruawai and Te Kopuru. “At one point there were three cinemas in Dargaville — The Royal, The Cozy and The Empire.” Originally from Ruawai, he has spent much of his childhood at the local Rialto cinema and his parents, Joan Main and Matt Scott, went on their first date at a dance at The Royal. Many couples met at the cinema and he has written a whole section on courtship — there used to be no arm rest separating pairs of seats and they were commonly known as ‘love seats.’ He wrote it because of his fascination with cinema but he also stresses the importance of documenting history and in the process he learnt about the entire area. “There were major renovations to cinemas in 1937 and we couldn’t work out why — then we found out that it was when electricity came to Dargaville.” He says that cinemas were the focal

point of towns as among other things they held ANZAC services, dances, screened rugby matches, and politicians spoke on stage as there was no town hall. It covers the time period 1911–1994 when the Empire closed down and includes the arrival of talking pictures, television, and the cinemascope. The official book launch will be at the Dargaville Museum, November 24 at 2pm and will be on sale for $55.

Twilight show jumping  Kim Munro

The Maungaturoto Equestrian Society has been hosting twilight show jumping for almost 30 years and continues this season at the Maungaturoto Country Club, every Thursday evening from 5pm till sundown. The society, under the umbrella of the Kaipara Hunt, began hosting the event back in 1984. “The first twilight show jumping was at the country club, the venue has moved around over the years but we have come full circle again,” says president, Lynne Butterworth. Lynne says the evenings are open to everyone, from young kids to older riders with any level of experience and welcome all horses from ponies to hacks, any age, colour, breed or size. There are two rings, one has 80cm to 1.05m jumps and the second ring provides a range of heights from poles

on the ground upwards. The courses are built by local resident, Wayne Bragg, who builds courses for Equestrian New Zealand all over the country. “We pride ourselves on being a friendly and safe environment to learn. We have a lot of kids at the twilights who do really well later on the circuit — they start off on little jumps and end up competing at a high level.” “It’s all about encouragement and promoting confidence in a casual, fun, non-competitive environment.” The event runs through summer until the end of daylight saving. Angling adventures since 1933 With the King of the Kaipara fishing contest on the horizon, anglers across the district and beyond are gearing up for a day (and a long hot summer) of fishing fun. At their side, and providing some cutting-edge technology in the battle between fish and fisherman, are Kiwi company Kilwell Sports, the adventure and outdoors specialists! Since 1933 Kilwell have been manufacturing and distributing the best in fishing gear and tackle, firearms and hunting kit for the New Zealand hunter and angler. As technology has advanced, Kilwell have been there each step of the way, with their own rodcraft division researching and developing better materials, and working

closely with fishermen to get the best out of both saltwater and freshwater angling. This year sees the release of an exciting new line of Snakeskin rods, utilising SSKN technology. With a range including stickbait, softbait and stand-up game rods (among others), these top-flight rods use an offaxis carbon weave to reduce weight while maximising lifting power. Truly, the ultimate ‘weapon’ in modern angling — and another stunning advancement from a company which has led the way in fishing technology for over three quarters of a century. Grab one from Nola Sports today, and we’ll see you on December 8th for the King of the Kaipara at Kelly’s Bay!

Do you have an ‘itis? If you have a health problem that ends with ‘itis’ it is an inflammatory disease. The term arthritis describes various inflammatory joint diseases. More specifically bursitis describes the inflammation of the fluid filled sac (bursar) in joints. Tendonitis is inflammation of tendons and so on. If you have an ‘it is’ you have unwanted inflammation. I remember about 15 years ago having bursitis in my elbow. Goodness me it hurt. My elbow was swollen, hot to touch, red and very painful. In my case this was caused by an infection and needed IV antibiotics. Following this I had a weakness in my elbow which lasted till about 10 years ago when I started adopting seriously anti-inflammatory diets and supplements. The four main indicators of inflammation are swelling, redness, heat and pain. This is of course what we can feel and observe. Inflammation goes a lot deeper than that. Our immune system responds to real (or imaginary) threats by sending a cocktail of chemicals with exotic names including prostaglandins, histamine, complement and cytokines. These chemicals cause a series of events that include dilation of blood vessels which increases blood flow. This extra blood flow causes both heat and redness. These inflammatory chemicals then cause capillaries to become more permeable causing protein rich fluid to leak into tissue spaces. With joints

this causes swelling, stiffness and of course pain. They also attract white blood cells to help clear out pathogens and dead tissue. This inflammatory response is critical when needed to repair damage or fight off bugs. It is unwanted when it occurs in otherwise healthy tissue. It is even worse when it is triggered to fix something it cannot repair. This is generally what happens with osteoarthritis. The joint tissue has eroded and the immune system thinks this is something it needs to fix and inflames the joint unnecessarily. Anti-inflammatory medicines such as diclofenac or ibuprofen block the unwanted inflammation reducing the symptoms. Even better is when you can coax the immune system into shutting down the unwanted inflammation. There are many naturally occurring compounds including antioxidants and some fats that actually switch inflammation off and bring sanity to inflamed tissue. If you have an ‘it is’ you it is essential you adopt the dietary changes and supplements that can reduce inflammation and your ‘it is’ may reduce or even disappear. No terrain is too tough for this little battler  by Our Farming Correspondent

The ATV quad has become a staple of farming life both here in New Zealand and around the world — a machine which has so many uses that farmers would be hard pressed to do without it. But some terrain is still just too rugged for even the most powerful ATV, and that’s where the Argo all terrain vehicle comes into its own. You might recognise the eight-wheel drive setup of this small but mighty machine from its bigger ‘cousins’ — the armoured personnel carriers and LAV’s which keep our defense forces moving. In fact, the Argo Avenger 750 looks very much like a tiny version of the Soviet BMP, the amphibious troop transport used to such devastating effect by the

North Vietnamese during the war in south east Asia. Like the BMP it isn’t just a mud-and-dirt scrambler — it’s also equally at home in water! The Argo’s 750cc, 31 horsepower engine transfers power to the ground through eight big 25” tyres, and it can carry over 400 kilos even when afloat. Overseas these machines have proven their worth in farming, logging and even in search and

Optional treads (which fit around the tyres of the Argo) just make the gutsy little machine even more capable, and the easy-to-use handlebar style controls make this tiny ‘tank’ simple to operate, even for novice drivers.

Kiwi farmers have been understandably keen to take a look at the Argo Avenger and its ‘siblings’, and they have proven a hit at Field Days and A&P shows, as well as providing thrills for recreational users through companies such as Track Wise 4x4 here in Northland. Argo New Zealand have supplied machines such as these for all manner of applications, including outfitting an Argo for Antarctic exploration!

Triple protection from new farming innovation Contractors and farmers work hard this time of year, especially when it comes to mowing hay for winter feed. But unseen dangers can lurk beneath the waves of grass — rocks and other solid debris which can cripple equipment and cause serious downtime, wiping out profits. Enter a new innovation from Massey Ferguson — hay mowers designed to ‘roll with the punches’, incorporating a clever new design to safeguard moving parts from harm in the event of an emergency. Operators can feel secure in the knowledge that they have not just one

but three safeguards protecting their mower should it hit an obstacle. A plate with four predetermined break points, the Driveguard shears off if a blade strikes anything solid, letting the affected disc spin freely. The other discs in the array spin on without being damaged. This saves the operator considerable time and money, according to local Agco spokesperson Greg Keegan. “You just stop, replace the disc attach four bolts and then you can go again,” he says. “The potential savings are incredible.” The disc is only the first part on a three-

This has three safeguards to stop that from happening.” A retro-fit kit is available for the 2.5m– 9m 40–180HP professional series disc

mower range, and Driveguard systems come factory-fitted on new models released this year, after a very successful release in Europe.
