Pictured are Ecclesia Davies, Josh Hooton and Khodie Paikea enjoying the challenge of the dominoes. According to organiser Jillaine Murray, frequently heard comments such as ‘lovely people’, ‘great sense of community and belonging here’. The Kaipara District Council sponsored the event and staff mixed with the locals inviting discussion around what makes a good community and what they enjoyed about being a part of the Paparoa neighbourhood.

Mangawhai community gets garden windfall u by Jill Dickie

The Palmers Planet Mangawhai Garden Ramble once again provided an opportunity for garden lovers and new homeowners to visit privately owned gardens for inspiration and enjoyment. More than 500 visitors travelled around the Mangawhai area to wander through 19 different gardens — 10 of which were first time shown.

The annual fundraiser this year raised more than $10,000 for the Mangawhai Kindergarten and Mangawhai Plunket organisations, and organiser Ali Campbell is delighted with the results. “It was a hugely successful weekend, the gardens were absolutely spectacular, and the weather even played its part on the whole,” she said.

1000 DAYS

The event attracts a broad range of garden enthusiasts from around Northland and Auckland, including families, with some properties providing light refreshments or plant cuttings and seedling to purchase. The gardens ranged from rustic, wellestablished plantings with a country feel — including horses — to more

contemporary-styled raised vegetable beds and pizza ovens, and everything in-between, including estuary views from a hot-tub. “There are a lot of volunteers involved, and we couldn’t do this without our sponsors, it’s a fantastic way to bring the larger community together,” said Ali. photos on page 4…

The Mates

p The Hindu spring festival of lights celebration, or Diwali, was celebrated recently and in Dargaville, resident Kathy Little joined the Goundar family to take part. She wore traditional attire and was assisted into a sari for the main event and feast. One of the most popular Hindu celebrations, it symbolises the victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance. Celebrants prepare their homes with decorations, adorn themselves in their finest clothing, worship and partake in family feasts during the five-day celebration.

p The children’s bike park project on View Street in Maungaturoto is finally coming to fruition after three years of careful planning, with the roadways being concreted last week and garden areas already planted. As soon as the concrete is properly set, the road markings will be painted and speed signs erected, and an official opening ceremony will complete the venture. Organiser Paul Chambers is very grateful to the community members who assisted last week with labour and brought food for the volunteers. “It was just amazing that the whole community has come together for this,” he said.

Community park needs help Members of the organising committee for the Te Kopuru Community Fun Park are seeking extra members to help progress the project, and inviting public feedback around what items may be required.

p Organisers Bregina Welagan and Violet Hutchinson look forward to progressing the community park for all to enjoy

The group will soon hold a meeting to discuss future ideas and put an action plan in place. They envisage a fitness obstacle course, a pump track and future playground, and would be willing to consider more ideas. “We need input from a wider network of enthusiastic helpers and more community engagement,” said committee member, Bregina Welagan. The Kaipara District Council is supporting the community-led project

and is working with the planning group to help them achieve their goals, by assisting with ideas and allocating funding for items such as the obstacle course. The project has stalled in the past, but organisers Bregina and Violet are focussed on seeing it through to completion with a motivated team. Last weekend in Dargaville generations of members of the Dalmatian community celebrated 160 years since their ancestors first set foot in New Zealand. The event was held at Harding Park and incorporated visits to the Dargaville Museum to view the gum washing machinery operating. Dalmatian clubs travelled from Whangarei, Kaitaia and Auckland for the celebration and the Dargaville group catered for around 380 members. It required two lunch sittings with traditionally cooked lambs on spits over an open fire and included old-time billy tea. During the programme of events for the day, there were musical performances and kolo dancing in the Lighthouse Function Centre. Affordable art sale u by Jill Dickie

The Dargaville Arts Association will open its annual Christmas shopping exhibition at the Muddy Waters Gallery in Hokianga Road, Dargaville, from November 22. The Affordable Arts display makes art accessible for the community and shoppers should find an eclectic mix in the exhibition. DAA members will provide examples of their year’s efforts, including artwork and photography to jewellery and gift items, at much-reduced prices. In preparation for the exhibition, local artist Donna Shadick is considering which of her pieces she will have available for buyers. “It is an opportunity for people to purchase an artwork at a reasonable price as most are usually several hundred

dollars,” she said. The annual art sale has in previous years been a popular spot for those looking for unique Christmas gifts — and for art enthusiasts wanting to add to their collection. Unlike a standard exhibition, all goods purchased can be taken home the same day which allows for further pieces to be displayed — some shoppers may choose to return several times. A gift wrapping service will be available for anyone purchasing Christmas gifts. ¢

Mayor’s Memo Kia ora At least 300 years of service to Kaipara communities are recognised in the six Kaipara Citizens Awards recipients recently announced. From an exceptional group of nominees put forward from across the district, the Citizens celebrated this year are Christine Bygrave, Terri Donaldson, Noelene Gatehouse, Bryce Gatehouse, Norma Ker and Haki Wihongi. Congratulations again to these Kaipara Citizens who make such extraordinary contributions to life here, who generously give and have given so much for so many years and make that giving look effortless. Thank you for showing us the way.

Getting our ‘welcome mat’ is of increasing importance around Kaipara District. Recent Statistics NZ figures have Kaipara as the fastest growing district in the North Island.

As a final note, please remember to join the People’s Panel that’s been rolling out in recent weeks at kaipara.govt.nz/ panel. We’ll have some interesting ideas coming soon to the People’s Panel for their feedback and every local is welcome to be part of it. At last count I heard 300 Kaipara citizens have signed on so far, which is about the same number as the years our Citizens Awards winners have put in to making Kaipara great. While that’s a handy coincidence for now, I expect we’ll soon have at least 1000 on our People’s Panel. Please join us today and let the good times roll.

Also part of the way ahead for Council is the upcoming Te Hana to Whangarei route protection work for the alternative State Highway 1 through Kaipara. While the exact route is yet to be determined, A new road could run to the west of Topuni and Kaiwaka, crossing the current SH12 near the dairy factory at Maungaturoto and then heading out of Kaipara west of the Brynderwyns through Gorge Rd towards Waipu. NZTA will be leading this planning next year, and Council is preparing the way for working with communities to incorporate the route into the next District Plan, with zoning for development land and new, safe road connections for settlements and communities along with protection of environmental values, key features and valuable soils as priorities. There’s much to be done here, and Council is preparing thoroughly so we get this once in a lifetime opportunity.

As more people get wise to what’s great about living in Kaipara, we can all expect to be joined by new residents, have further positive population growth and see more welcome mats being rolled out.

Project manager, Victoria del la VarisWoodcock and project coordinator, Emma McLean, collaborated with production company Big Fish Creative to produce the educational video, which highlights Kaipara as a region to be treasured and protected. The video is hosted by More FM radio presenter and Northland personality Toast, who presents lessons on reducing waste with humour, fun and real-life examples that children can relate to. Love Kaipara educator, Margaret Baker, was thrilled with Ka Pai Kaipara video and said, “There’s going to be a few giggles

watching this — the kids will love it.” Creative Northland organised the event to showcase how the arts can be used to heighten awareness of climate warming and encourage behaviour change. “It takes very little effort to simply look at a picture, and our minds connect the dots and make a story around it. The messages we can send are extremely powerful and wide-reaching,” said graphic designer, Emma McLean. At the event, Ms del la Varis-Woodcock shared images of work the Love Kaipara team had produced during the last three years. ¢

In his first solo exhibition in Northland, Baylys Beach artist Sean McDonnell displays his bright, vivid works in a show called New Landscapes. The exhibition is open from November 17 at No 1 Parnell gallery in Rawene and remains until December 16. Sean says the oil paintings in the exhibition are based on places he has visited and been inspired by over the previous 12 months, and he describes them as having a touch of mystery and surrealism. “Living in Japan definitely influenced my art — it helped me to appreciate nature and hone my colour mixing and paint application skills,” he said. The event brought students together to interact with new friends through playing sport together. In doing so, the shared experience of developing relationships also provided a sense of community and belonging to last many years. The biggest contingent arrived on Leabourn Transport sponsored buses from Ruawai with 120 students, Matakohe school was also sponsored. Other schools with participating teams were Paparoa and Arapohue. Year one and two children practised ball handling skills and hand-eye coordination, while older groups

played netball and soccer, overseen by students from Ruawai College who helped manage and referee the teams. “They were an absolute credit to Ruawai College, and we were impressed with their humble but amazing role modelling,” said Tinopai School principal, Sonya Kaihe. The teams were mixed so that students played with those from different schools, supporting each other and helping fill gaps. “They are now part of a new community, sharing in the spirit of sport in its true form,” said bystander, Jo Forsythe. ¢

Hospice shop reopened

Theatregoers’ delight

After a little upheaval, and operating a successful pop-up shop, the Pennies for Heaven Hospice Shop has now reopened for business at its original address, 96 Victoria Street.

p Board members, staff and volunteers of Hospice Kaipara Inc gathered together to celebrate the reopening of their renovated store

The store has had a full refurbishment including a new ceiling, carpet and vinyl, shelving and a fresh coat of paint. “It’s a much fresher, cleaner and more welcoming store for shoppers and a nicer environment for our volunteers to work in,” said Hospice Kaipara Incorporated chair, Dale Schick. During the stages of refit, there was an abundance of donations received, from furniture to bags and boxes of clothing, all of which will be sorted through and prepared for display. The enthusiastic 19-strong cast of 6 to 14-year-olds rehearsing for the latest show at Dargaville Little Theatre is excited to begin performances in front of an audience. The production of Charlie’s Christmas Adventures opens on Friday, November 30, and writer and director, Eryn Wilson-Collins, encourages all members of the public to come along. “The kids have been working so hard, so come, support them and see their efforts,” she said. Around half of the cast are first-timers, and Eryn said holding their focus has been an interesting challenge through their excitement, but they are all looking forward to being on stage and putting on a good show. Hine Tutapu is in her first show and playing the lead role of Charlie. Charlie is rather disenchanted with Christmas. A magical spirit sends her and her friends on an adventure to reignite their love of Christmas and reiterate what is important at this time of year. Hine designed and wore her creation in the recent Dargaville Arts Association Wearable Arts Awards. Due to her confidence p Cast members of Charlie’s Christmas Adventures, Ezra Scott, Ashlee Fraser, Ruby-Lee Parry-Mitchell, and and interaction with the public 6-year-old Levi Parkinson, are excited to perform in while on stage, Eryn invited her front of an audience to audition for the show. The show has its final performance available from the door only, $5 each or on Sunday, December 2. Tickets are four for $15. ¢

The golden hour saves Northland woman A routine knee replacement operation turned into a scary ordeal for 71-year-old Anne McNamara who ended up gravely ill and in desperate need of an emergency flight from the Northland Rescue Choppers in a bid to save her life. Following her successful knee replacement operation, Anne got up to freshen up for her departure home and remembers it all went downhill from there. “I was standing in my ensuite and had just finished cleaning my teeth when I fell over backwards and off my crutches. Luckily where I fell was next to the call bell for the nurses, so I rung that and all I remember is getting a very violent headache across my forehead,” she says. “I remember the nurses coming to help me, and my sister and friend were there as they had been coming to collect me, but I was confused when they came, and that is the last I remember. It all went black from there.” Rushed to Whangarei Hospital via ambulance, Anne was placed into an induced coma and underwent extensive tests including a CT scan which showed a subdural bleed.

The risk of death was so severe that she was immediately flown to Auckland Hospital accompanied by a doctor and nurse from Whangarei, and on arrival, was rushed immediately into surgery. “When I woke up, I looked around and saw some family and then two surgeons came in. One turned to me and said ‘we are the ones who saved your life’. It isn’t often you hear that.” “If it wasn’t for that helicopter ride and the speed in which it could get me to Auckland…” she trails off. “It is quite frightening really. That helicopter ride saved my life.” Recovery wise, everything has been going fine. “I was brought home from Auckland in an ambulance and that was one long ride. It just shows how much time the choppers save.” Anne says she encourages people to donate to the helicopters, and take a moment to realise how important this service is in Northland. “All of our family donate to the choppers. We need this service – it saves lives and it saved mine.”

New vicar at Holy Trinity

The tip of the iceberg

9

u by Jill Dickie

A new vicar has been appointed to the Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Dargaville, taking over from Reverend Pat Boon. The incoming Reverend Karen Dack and her husband Tim recently relocated to New Zealand from a Queen’s appointment on Guernsey Island. Both reverends, Karen and Tim, have been posted in churches around the UK, and in New Zealand, on a previous trip, they enjoyed building a healthy community in Tirau. They now look forward to integrating into life in Dargaville and surrounds with no plans to move anywhere else. A certain amount of upheaval can occur within a church community when a new vicar arrives, and Karen is preparing to embrace her role in supporting locals and establishing harmonious relationships. “We look forward to meeting and encouraging all people of faith in the area, no matter their background or belief system, to help them move forward in life,” p Reverend Karen Dack, Bishop Ross and Reverend Tim she said. Dack, outside the Holy Trinity Church where Karen has “Whatever their journey, all are recently been inducted welcome to visit as frequently or infrequently as they choose, whether a passion for good coffee. They have that be in a traditional or non-traditional travelled extensively internationally way,” added husband, Tim. and seen all of New Zealand except Karen and Tim have four adult the Far North — though this is likely to children and one grandchild and have happen soon. ¢

The presentation this month of the Kaipara Citizens Awards by the Kaipara District Council to six finalists from 18 nominations has once again highlighted for me an aspect of Kaipara that only those living in the district may be fully aware of, but of which I am fiercely proud. That is the capacity of Kaiparians to quietly and methodically set about improving the district without recognition or reward. Yes, these six award recipients were recognised and rewarded by the Kaipara District Council, and deservedly so. Mayor Jason Smith said that the winners gave their time freely and with great heart, expecting nothing in return. He said what they do connects our communities. Moreover, indeed, they do. I know that there are also many others — perhaps hundreds of others — who are equally unstinting of their time and their effort in serving the community, whether it is officiating at sports events, serving as emergency services volunteers, working with young people, or … well, the list, of course,

goes on. It is said that volunteers are the life-blood of a community — that is true. New Zealanders are particularly good at it. We have turned volunteering into something of an art form. A lot of what is best about our country is mostly and often entirely dependent on volunteers. As I travel around New Zealand, I wonder whether volunteering is as prevalent as it once was. Indeed, I know that some sporting codes are struggling to attract support. So, too, the membership of service clubs and even some emergency services. That may also be the case in Kaipara; however, I don’t see it that way. I see a vibrant, generous and thriving community that looks after its own — often on its own. ¢

ELF attacks Northland pests

u by Jill Dickie

The Environmental Leaders Fund (ELF) has seen an additional $10,000 worth of biosecurity-targeted funding allocated to several schools across the Kaipara district which are a part of the Enviroschools programme.

Twenty-one years of being friends, encouraging each other in art practice, and working towards the goal of exhibiting have resulted in a remarkable, stunning exhibition at Mangawhai Artists Gallery called Clist and Christie, which opens on November 22. With her foundations for an art career set by art teacher, Rebecca Barclay Clist, Tracey Christie now paints with expressive, vibrant paint, cutting out and arranging images. Her work in Willow Garden stems from her journey from Auckland to Paparoa with her young family. “My husband and I moved back into my family home on the Kaipara Harbour, and I found that old and new memories started to merge, flourish and grow much like an overgrown summer garden,” she said. “The Kaipara harbour ebbs and flows outside my window, and I am inspired by the shifting colours and contrasts of light on the water, mangroves and fields.” In Scratching the Surface, Rebecca interviewed people to create a snapshot of the people we live alongside to connect with the essence of humanity and share stories. “Initially the idea came from thinking about where people are at in their own lives, the aspects of loss in cultural identity, in my own family through adoption and estrangement, and what has been gained through these events; this was my starting point,” she said.

“While I have been preparing and painting these images, I feel like I have sat with people I admire and am thankful that they have shared something of themselves.” The exhibition closes on December 5. ¢

The fund is an annual incentive set up by Nor thland Regional Council to supply pest traps, baits and tracking and monitoring materials supporting a school-wide approach to sustainability. There are now more than 90 schools and kindergartens taking part in the Enviroschools programme, educating children in a practical way. Three decades on u by Jill Dickie

For the 30th year businessman and keen outdoorsman, Mike Nola of Nolas Sports is arranging the King of the Kaipara Kingfish Tournament at Kelly’s Bay on the Pouto Peninsula. On Saturday, December 1, all lines will be out for anglers with tickets, each hoping the heaviest fish will take their bait. The Kaipara Harbour tournament is a popular event on keen fisher’s calendars, whether they fish from a boat or the shore, and each year familiar faces return to try their luck against their peers. In each of five categories, the heaviest three fish at weigh-in will win the rod holders much sought-after prizes, additionally the heaviest four Kingfish in the team event. As a reminder, it’s not a case of ‘any fin goes’ — prizes are only given for Kingfish, Kahawai, Trevally, Snapper and Gurnard. Mike is grateful to sponsors for donating products, but most often prizes are purchased from monies collected from entries. Spot prizes are presented for various reasons and situations, so everyone has a chance of taking something home. In the time he has been organising the event Mike said it had been cancelled only twice — due to bad weather — and

even then a prize-giving was still held ensuring fishers received something for their attendance. He runs the event as a not-for-profit, and any proceeds are donated to other organisations. Entry numbers throughout the 30 years of the competition have risen and fallen in no apparent pattern — the most on recollection was more than 400. Throughout 35 years in business, Mike has taken pleasure in seeing young children starting in their first competition grow through their teens and become adults, continuing to advance their skills and passion for the sport. “It’s not about the money, or I wouldn’t still be doing it. I get a buzz out of providing a community event and promoting fishing,” he said. Mike’s children have grown up learning about outdoor sports, just as he did himself, and they maintain an active interest in fishing, diving and shooting. Fishers keen to enter can purchase

Hemp seed potential

Cattle classes mooving ahead

u by Jill Dickie

Regional economies could be big winners of rule changes allowing hemp seed to be treated as just another edible seed, according to Food Safety minister Damien O’Connor, and the Kaipara district could also benefit through diversifying. The Misuse of Drugs (Industrial Hemp) Regulations 2006 and the Food Regulations 2015 Acts will be amended to allow the sale of hemp seed as food, and the hemp seed industry is confident this could generate more jobs and $10 to $20 million of export revenue within three to five years. “Diversification is key to the health of a regional economy, and the government is committed to working with our primary sectors to get more value from what they do,” said O’Connor. Kaipara mayor, Dr Jason Smith, is interested in the potential for industry growth in the district. “I’m keen for Kaipara’s economy to diversify and for us to build on our already great food and fibre production industries as we go forward. New crops, functional foods and adaptations as the climate changes all need to be part of the mix,” he said. Hemp seeds and hemp seed products do not have any medicinal effect, but are safe to eat, very nutritious and do not have a psychoactive effect according to the Ministry of Health. Growing, possession and trade of whole seeds require a licence from the Ministry of Health. Care is taken in the manufacture and handling process to ensure whole seeds do not include

p The North Kaipara Agricultural and Pastoral Association has announced it will be going ahead with its cattle section despite the recent threat of Mycoplasma bovis in the Kaipara district. Cattle ring coordinator, Sue Clayton, is confident the risk of transfer of the disease will be minimal. “We will be having a calf, novice and RAS young handlers classes for the young people. Biosecurity measures are also in progress and cleaning out of the cattle pens is underway,” she said.

p Food Safety minister, Damien O’Connor, says diversification is key to regional health

other parts of the plant, such as the leaves and flowers, which can contain potentially psychoactive substances. Further information is available from the Ministry of Health website, the Ministry for Primary Industries website and through the New Zealand Food Safety Authority. ¢
