Artists from throughout the Kaipara have a central exhibition venue for the future with the success of the second year of the Kaipara Art Awards
The event was judged at The Kauri Museum at Matakohe last week, after a month long exhibition housed in the museum's expansive entrance foyer. The awards were the culmination of efforts by the Mangawhai and Dargaville arts associations, commercial sponsors, volunteers, and Kaipara District council assistance. “It was a wonderful event, a great exhibition, and the museum foyer space meant it was open to the public without charge,” said museum curator, Bet Nelley. “The event was a tribute to our Kaipara artists, and all concerned, including museum staff who organised a first class exhibition.” The KDC arts portfolio is held by Councillor Julia Sutherland. “These second awards are greatly improved, greatly expanded in a really great setting,” she told the capacity crowd at the awards ceremony. “Huge thanks to The Kauri Museum for providing the venue and dedicating space over several weeks to exhibiting this wide range of wonderful works. “This has allowed us to showcase the district’s talented artists to the many visitors and locals who come to visit.” Ms Sutherland added that for the participating artists, the awards’ theme — Kaipara from the Pacific to the Tasman — had obviously been inspirational. “We have had a marvellous number of entries in almost all categories, which I guess made the judges’ job a difficult, albeit a pleasurable, one. Thank you for taking the theme seriously, for interpreting it in so many ways, and for letting us all see the district — coast to coast and all the landscapes and history between — through new eyes.” Commenting later on a judge's suggestion that the KDC might look at increasing support for the arts, Ms Sutherland said it was obvious that the event “could not have been held at all without the financial help of our sponsors. “Brookfields lawyers provided sponsorship for a second time at an increased level, and that is marvellous. New sponsors this year were MPL Landscape Supplies, NorthSouth Multi Media and the Kaipara Lifestyler, Westmoreland Homes and Northland Waste.”

“I have mentioned the Kauri Museum’s support and I would also like to mention the huge assistance from Kaipara’s arts associations. Members from Mangawhai and Dargaville formed a steering committee to brainstorm ideas, decide the structure and format, and thus to do the background work for the event that supported the organising capability of council staff, particularly Heidi Dreyer. “Promoting these awards is an unusual activity for council, far removed from its preoccupation with roads, rubbish and stormwater. The arts associations in the district have large local membership and are very active and enthusiastic. See results on page 5

Bank makeover
BNZ Dargaville is no longer “the ugly duckling” of all banks in the area after a dramatic and very fast makeover. The exciting development is part of a nationwide rollout of innovative banking stores that make everyday banking more modern, safe and friendly. There are no screens or obtrusive security screens — instead, BNZ Dargaville is open-plan with many new advantages. Internet is now available in-store for customer use, businesses that bank with BNZ can enter their own information to create an advertisement, which will rotate on a screen behind the tellers, community groups can their own notices for fundraisers and events, there is a dedicated children’s area and a television that

faces outside of the building to present BNZ’s latest news and information. “We really want community groups to come in and advertise,” says BNZ’s new branch manager, Chad Lowen. “Any group that has an event coming up is welcome to come in and we’ll advertise it.” As well as free internet and free digital notice board for local organisations, the new open plan BNZ store offers access a team of small business experts via video phone and a range of private meeting places. BNZ is also making banking safer with CCTV throughout the store, timelocked cash dispensers for extra security and SelectaDNA Hydraspray to mark offenders. The new fit out was completed over two weekends, meaning little disruption for staff and customers. BNZ Dargaville celebrated with an open day on Thursday, November 17, complete with cake and a delicious offering of fresh snacks and drinks. Manager, Chad Lowen, has been at BNZ for two weeks and says he loves it, the staff are friendly, lots of fun and very efficient. The Hikurangi father of two came to the BNZ from Kiwibank.

Breast screening bus is on the move BreastScreen Aotearoa’s mobile screening unit has been based in Dargaville since October 10 but come November 25 and it will be on the move. The mobile unit is heading to Kaiwaka and will be available for screenings from November 28 through to December 9. From January 9 to 14 Jan, the unit will be based in Wellsford. All women between the ages of 45-69 are eligible for free breast screening and will be contacted by phone or mail to attend one of these mobile clinics. “It’s free and it could save your life,” says Debbie Evans, CEO of Kaipara Community Health Trust. Sara Lewis, Business Manager for Coast to Coast Health Care, said the last time the mobile unit was in Kaiwaka in July this year, 193 women were screened with another 79 in Te Hana, which is a fantastic result. “However, what we’re worried about is the eligible women, who don’t or haven’t come to one of these screening programmes. Our statistics show there are 28 women in Kaiwaka, 57 in Mangawhai and 39 in Maungaturoto who are due to have their free screening but haven’t. “If one of these women is your wife, mother, aunt or sister, please encourage her to come along, invest the time in her wellbeing and be screened, please help us reach these women.”

Coffee with Rae Roadley
by Joanne Speechly
Local author and journalist, Rae Roadley, will deliver a presentation at Jo’s Home Cookery on Friday, November 25, following the October launch of her first book, Love at the End of the Road. The open gathering will include a question and answer session, an opportunity to purchase the book and book signing. Rae’s memoir, which she starting writing in earnest in 2009, chronicles her life on a sheep and beef farm at Batley, on the Kaipara Harbour. It is part biography and part history and undoubtedly a love story. “I was nervous about putting my personal story into the world, but feedback from readers has been great and people have been supportive,” says Rae. Soon after returning to her hometown of Whangarei in 1998 Rae met her future husband,

This is a series of regular articles keeping you informed of happenings on our harbour today, and from bygone days — truly the ‘Jewel of the Kaipara’.
Repairing our threatened catchment by Paul Campbell
about 30 days to plant natives as well as release existing plants from weeds and provide a habitat for the many migratory birds which depend on the Kaipara. “The programme attracts mainly international volunteers who visit New Zealand but, as we move into the summer holidays, we’re hoping to get some local people who are keen to make a difference to the environment,” he added. “The catchment care programme has improved 1.7 million square metres of New Zealand land — the equivalent of about 240 rugby fields, in projects involving a grand total of 6,400 volunteers. “We would love to have local involvement in the current project.” Kaipara people can call Conservation Volunteers on 0800 567 686 or email catchmentcare@fonterra.com.
NOFIN TI AL CE
There’s a concerted cleanup and planting campaign underway on the Kaipara. Catchment Care, an initiative between dairying industry giant, Fonterra, and Conservation Volunteers New Zealand, was set up a little over two years ago with a declared intention to protect and enhance the nation’s waterways and wetlands. Since August, 2009, teams of volunteers have been working on water care projects across the country. Combating erosion by planting and fencing along streamlines, weeding to remove invasive plants from waterways, controlling pests, collecting seeds and clearing rubbish. “And it’s not only our waterways that are benefitting,” said Fonterra’s Leana Hunt. “Planting trees re-establishes natural habitats for endangered animal and bird life, builds carbon reserves and gives back to New Zealand’s local communities. It’s an initiative we’re proud to be part of. “With an eye on the future, we’ve set an impressive target, to enhance over 2,000,000 square metres of New Zealand waterways, wetlands
and catchment zones by July 2012. To achieve it, we’ll be working in rural areas alongside landowners, regional councils, community groups and environmental agencies on projects that span the length and breadth of New Zealand. “With such a big goal in mind, we’re on the lookout for keen volunteers. If you share our passion for the environment and would like to pitch in, let us know.” Ms Hunt added that recent research has highlighted the importance of the Kaipara harbour ecosystem, particularly the seagrass beds which provide significant habitat for juvenile snapper. Extensive seagrass beds are located adjacent to the Hoteo River outlet into the harbour. “The Catchment Care team has been working at Kaipara this week, at Pouto Penninsula, doing a wide variety of work from planting 800 trees, to reseeding and surveying pest species living in the area. “The team will be back on November 28, working on Otakanini Topu, a large farm south west near Helensville, again doing a variety of work. This is a flagship farm for the Integrated Kaipara Harbour Management Group. “The remaining days are still to be rescheduled but these are likely to start again in December/ January and will include work in the Pouto and Otakanini Topu as well as Hoteo River, which is a priority sub-catchment on the eastern Kaipara, and the Tapora peninsula. Fonterra communications spokesman, Kobus Retief, said that around 10 volunteers will put in

Northern Wairoa Plunket needs you! It is a busy time for Northern Wairoa Plunket with two funding initiatives on the go! One is local fundraising first, raising money specifically for the Northern Wairoa through the sale of calendars and the second is Plunket’s nationwide Online Car Seat Collector Campaign. “This the first time we’ve ever produced calendars,” says Kylie Kelsen, NW Plunket President and Northern Area Car Seat Rental Scheme manager. “The children featured in the calendar are all local — and all different nationalities too, so it really reflects Dargaville.” The Anne Geddes-like calendar photos were shot by local photography student, Tori Murray Elley, for her end of year project and are of the highest quality. The ideal Christmas presents are $17.50 for one calendar but the price reduces with multiple purchases. The nationwide car seat campaign runs for another few days and Plunket is hoping to raise $20,000. Donators can find the campaign at http://carseatcollector.plunket.org.nz. Elaina Moulds
The Ruawai College Proxime Accessit 2011 was awarded to Jason Ball along with the Endeavour Trophy for a positive and hardworking approach to all aspects of schooling and the Dargaville Districts community arts council recognition of excellence in the arts award. “I studied statistics and modelling, English, science, as well as physical education and geography. I feel good about my internal assessments and completed everything I needed to get done,” said Jason. “I am pretty excited about my awards and it is nice to feel recognised for the hard-work I have put in over the year, it all came as a surprised, as there are three to four other students that were in with a chance. Next year I am heading over to England, for my gap year, where I will be working at a school just out of Birmingham doing teacher aiding and groundwork, in return I will receive free accommodation. I am also hoping to be presented with my Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award at St James Palace but this is yet to be confirmed. “With a two year visa I hope to travel around Europe. I am planning on going for a year, but I have left my options open,” said Jason. On his return to New Zealand, Jason plans to study at Massey University, Palmerston North and hopes to complete a degree in advertising and psychology, taking three to four years. Jason currently lives with his parents Peter and Sara Ball, Ruawai dairy farmers. In his spare time, Jason loves to ride horses and competes in eventing competitions and long with his dad is a keen tramper.
Outstanding Dargaville High School student, Eden Gray, has been named Proxime Accessit for 2011.
Promising young broadcaster and allround high achiever, Elaina Moulds, walked away from Otamatea High School’s prizegiving as Proxime Accessit 2011.
Next year, Eden will attend the University of Otago.
She also received the OHS’s General Excellence trophy.
“I was surprised but it was a good surprise,” says Eden of her achievements.
Next year, Elaina is heading to Auckland University of Technology to undertake a threeyear Bachelor of Communications degree.
“I am going to Otago to study zoology and in the future, hope to have a hands-on career, such as field work in another country.” Seventeen year old Eden was seven when she and her family arrived in New Zealand from England. “I love reading, travelling and art. Next Tuesday I am leaving for England where I will visit my grandparents. I’ll be there for just under a month, so it will be a nice holiday.” As well as her subject exams, Eden is sitting a further four scholarship exams. The exceptional student was also placed first in English, Art and Art History and received the Merit award in Biology and Chemistry. To top off ‘a very good prizegiving’, Eden took home the $1,000 St George Lodge Scholarship for endeavour and diligence, the Senior Girls’ Cross Country trophy and the NZ Society of Chemistry Silver Crest award — a first for DHS student and Eden wishes to acknowledge her chemistry teacher. “I also want to say a big, huge congratulations to Amanda — she really is an intelligent and wonderful person.” Amanda McLaren won Dux of School.
As well as achieving excellent academic results, Elaina participates in all areas of school life — sports, leadership and cultural. “I play netball and basketball and last year I also played soccer and was in a Netball North team,” says Elaina. “I love drama too and singing — I take drama as a subject and participate in all the school productions.” The bubbly teenager is quick-witted and laughs that she likes to think of her singing, a newfound talent, as somewhere between New Zealand artists, Gin Wigmore and Brooke Fraser. Reading is another love of Elaina’s who jokes that she is a closet nerd. “I was pleased to be named Proxime Accessit but the General Excellence trophy was a real shock. I’m looking forward to AUT where I think I would like to specialise in journalism, advertising or broadcasting.” Elaina also adds that she is ‘a big shopper’ — so watch out Auckland!

Rodney College scholar, seventeen year old Zane Reid, was awarded Proxime Accessit at this year’s prize giving after being placed first in Chemistry, Calculus, Physics and first equal in Statistics. Next year, Zane will attend the University of Otago where he will study a Bachelor of Science degree. “Otago University has is very well known for its science department,” says Zane. “I plan to major in chemistry and may look at doing a Masters degree after I graduate. “Career wise, I hope to work in research and development — I’ve always been interesting in seeing how things work.” In addition to his regular NCEA exams, Zane is also sitting three scholarship exams. He says his goal is to do his best and believes the results have everything to do with the effort that is put in. During his study period at school, Zane performs Civic Duty and sets up all the lab experiments and prepares the chemical solutions, which he says has given him invaluable experience for next year. He is also interested in archery and singing and is an active member of Fuel Youth Group in Mangawhai, which is part of Causeway Church. As well as being a youth group leader, Zane is also a vocalist and teaches the Kids’ Church. “I’ve never been to the South Island before, so I’m really looking forward to next year.”
The Silver Fern Farms Kaipara District Sports Awards have once again shown that the district excels in all sporting endeavours, and water skiing was the big winner on the night, taking the three top awards. A real Christmas Wonderland Dargaville’s Town Hall foyer will become a Christmas Wonderland from December 7th to the 10th, with more than 40 Christmas trees, when the Northern Wairoa Lions hold their popular display. The event has grown from 13 trees to more than 40, which has prompted the move from the Lions centre to the Town Hall. Lions Club members have been preparing for the event throughout the year and this year’s display will see trees grouped in themes, such as fairy stories and fashion, as well as traditional Christmas trees. There will also be raffles and Christmas goodies on sale and a special visit from Santa. Adding to the festivities this year, is an opening evening on Wednesday, December 7, at 7pm, where there will be nibbles, entertainment and the chance to buy a glass of wine. “We want to give the community a Christmas experience and it has been getting bigger and better every year,” says spokesperson Lyn Trounson. “The display is also Northern Wairoa Lions biggest annual project and raises funds which we put back into the local community.” Tickets for the opening evening are $10 and available from Brian’s Gym, Dargaville Post Shop, First National Dargaville and Ray White Jean Johnson Realty. Thursday and Friday hours are 9am to 4.30pm and Saturday is from 9am to 3pm. Entry is $2 for adults and high school students, $1 for primary school children and under fives are free.

Stepping Out need recruits Joanne Speechly Dargaville’s leisure marching team, Stepping Out, is looking for some more recruits. The group of ten ladies practice in the evenings once or twice a week and the sport is great exercise, good for co-ordination and also a brain workout. Stepping Out currently has ten members, which makes up a team but ideally they would like new members to join. Marching works in groups of threes and ten is the minimum, to make another full team they need another three members and are also looking for back-ups. “Our main practice is on Tuesdays at Dargaville Primary School between 4.30 and 5.30pm and we also get together on a Sunday afternoon to march for the exercise — even if there’s only a few of us and it would be great to get some more recruits,” says Stepping Out founder, Sharon Hunter. “If someone is thinking of joining, coming along on a Sunday would be perfect because then we could teach them the fundamentals before they join the team. People think marching is easy but it’s taken us a whole year to learn to march. “It’s not walking, your body is under tension the whole time and you have to count. If you miss a beat, then it messes everyone up and it’s very involved. We have to remember routines — sort of like ballroom dancing — if you put

your right foot in the wrong place then you’ll trip someone up and there is a whole marching vocabulary. “Marjory Lok, our leader, marched competitively for many years and our coach, Norma Ker, was Centre Chief NZ Judge of Northland but the rest of us are rank amateurs. We all contribute to the routines though — we’re definitely part of a team and there’s a real buzz when we actually get the routine right on.” Stepping out are currently fundraising for performance uniforms and would interested in talking to people about sponsorship. Marching is excellent exercise, great for toning muscles, fun and friendly. For more information, contact Sharon Hunter on 09 439 5634.

Fishing rod technology goes the distance Abu Garcia fishing rods have taken on an exciting new look. They have entered the market this year with rods made with nanotechnology. The new Veritas, nanotech rods are lighter and stronger than their graphite counterparts.
www.kaiparalifestyler.co.nz F SA OR LE
It has been designed using the IM6 graphite Abu Surfline rod as a model. With some subtle stiffening and the application of the nanotechnology this rod has been transformed from what was already an outstanding fishing rod into an unbelievable, long range, fishing rod. It’s slow progressive taper means that the blank can be easily loaded. The recovery, which is the time it takes the rod to return to its natural shape (straight) after being flexed through the cast is one thing that lets a lot of surf rods down. A wagging tip sends shock waves down the line and that means friction which will shorten your cast.
These are incredible distances for what has been described by the rod designer, Gary Kemsley, as a user friendly fishing rod. “My aim was to produce a practical fishing rod that could cast very long distances.” He said. It certainly does that! The rod is attractively finished in white with a black trim. We haven’t seen any white surf rods on the market, (or on the beach) for some time so it certainly stands out. Lightweight guides keep the overall weight of the rod to a minimum.

The new Veritas 14’ 6” surf rod is the flagship of the Abu surf rod range. It is a three-piece rod which makes for convenient storage and transportation.
The Veritas has a very fast recovery rate and that means less interference to the line during the cast and therefore more distance. This is a very easy casting rod. In field tests this rod has cast over 170m with a 5oz sinker and a staggering 185m with a 4oz sinker.
15
Gary Kemsley puts the nanotech-equipped Veritas through its paces and bags a big one!
One benefit of the nanotechnology is the incredible hoop strength that is created within the blank. This means that damage to the blank which can cause breakages is unlikely. The rod is such a good looker though that you will want to keep it well protected when not in use. The Abu Garcia Veritas Surf rod is a winner and anyone who fishes the big surf beaches or wants an easy to use long distance casting rod should have a look at this high tech performer.

Abu’s new Nanotechnology manipulates graphite on an atomic level for improved compression strength without sacrificing action or performance. Nanotechnology introduces Nano particles to the resin that binds graphite in fishing rods. This nano enhanced resin supports and boisters graphite fibres by surrounding them with nano-spheres, creating a stronger bond. Veritas rods take advantage of this new technology to deliver an extremely lightweight and balanced rod design that delivers incredible strength and performance.

Who’ll boss Fonterra? by Our Agriculture correspondent
With the announced departure of Sir Henry van der Heyden as chairman of the country’s biggest business, the rumour mills are speculating on a successor But despite some dairying power in Kaipara and the north, eyes apparently are elsewhere. Three farmers are being mentioned by industry sources, including well-known Bay of Plenty farmer, Colin Armer, as well as John Wilson who farms at Te Awamutu, and Wairarapa’s John Monaghan. Sir Henry told the annual meeting this month that he’ll quit as of next year’s AGM, a year before he’s slated to do so. He hasn’t set a time frame for a successor to be appointed. The change in leadership will perhaps be significant, with Sir Henry having been at the helm for the past decade, a time in which the fortunes of dairy farmers have been on an increasingly upward swing, with a flow on into the national economy and the rural servicing industry in particular. There has been an undercurrent of unrest among Fonterra shareholders in recent months, over the question of share-trading and a review is being undertaken at top level, which is expected to resolve most concerns. Sir Henry says he expects problems about legal titles will be sorted by Christmas. With his term still to run until next November, it is to be assumed

this issue is just a hiccup hardly bearing on his decision to stepdown. In any event, industry accolades for his leadership are pouring in. “I don’t think many New Zealanders understand just how big a job Sir Henry has done. It’s not just a business story, but an environmental one. It was under Sir Henry’s tenure that the Clean Streams Accord was launched. That has gone on to become an outstanding success,” said Federated Farmers’ dairy chair, Willy Leferink.

Official Report Endorses Solar For Dairy When new technology emerges, the most intelligent course of action is to wait for results that can be measured. In the case of solar hot water heating for dairy farms, this has been a priority for farmers who want to realise the best return on their investment — and to help them, the government’s energy efficiency task force have been busy around the country installing trial systems. Now the definitive figures are in, and the claims of solar hot water developers have been proven beyond a doubt. Case studies undertaken by the EECA have shown massive gains in efficiency at all trial locations, with power savings totalling thousands of dollars. The findings show that on average 32% of an entire dairy farm’s power usage is expended on water heating. That’s close to a third of what can be a major cost for agribusiness, and one which can be drastically reduced with solar energy, leading the agency to state — “The opportunity for solar water heating in New Zealand is particularly good due to our high solar radiation levels. While there is some variation in the energy levels available between the top of the North Island and the bottom of the South Island, all parts of the country can use solar energy to produce hot water cost effectively.” Units installed in Waihi, Marlborough, and the Waikato are all reporting back savings of up to 76%. Locally, solar hot water experts
Plumbing and Heating in Dargaville have seen the results themselves, with Kaipara-based dairy farming customers impressed with their system’s performance. As the EECA’s report says — “The early results from the EECA dairy shed projects are showing hot water bill savings of 50 — 76%. Returns on capital investment, based on current electricity prices, are predicted to be in the range of 3 — 7 years, depending on the size of the farm and use of hot water in the dairy shed. As electricity prices rise, the returns on investment will be even better.” For a FREE copy of the complete report and a quote for your farm, visit Plumbing and Heating today on 0800 326 123, or visit 102 Jervois St, Dargaville.
Hot water until the cows come home New Zealand’s dairy industry leads the world, with new technologies developed here becoming the benchmark for the global dairy industry. Vintage car club view computerised motor
by Brian Eastwood If you had been passing the former Thames Arial top dressing airfield at Te Wharau one day last week you might have expected to spot an aeroplane about to takeoff. The sounds of the high revving engine you would have heard were coming from a prototype motor sitting on the concrete apron at Michael and Janice Brenstrum’s workshop. It was being demonstrated to members of the Dargaville Vintage Car Club. A few afternoon showers and some muddy roads hadn’t stopped them from their usual, somewhere in the Northern Wairoa, monthly drive. After visiting Kauri Coast Rest Home and taking some of the residents for a flip around town they sat down with them to enjoy lunch. With the meal over, the nine old time cars set out from the boating club car park to visit Paul Graham Pounamu Studios in Mangawhare. Then they were off through the back roads of Parore, Waihue and Avoca to arrive back on State Highway 14 to call on the Brenstrums.
It was an afternoon tea stop, with the added bonus of checking out the boat Michael is building and hearing Whangarei inventor, Allan Fillery, speak about and demonstrate his radical aeroplane engine. He had previously built a small 78c.c, 4-½ horsepower version but then decided to build the full sized, seven cylinder, sidevalve radial motor he had on display. Allan told the car Club members, “From then on it was just a matter of doing a lot of research. I’m certainly not the first person to have a go. But it is the first seven-cylinder engine in the world to be fully computer controlled and it’s more reliable than a magneto system. The fuel is 91 octane.” Alan said that aluminium welding, casting, shrink fitting and working to tolerances of plus or minus 0.101 or 0.102 of a millimetre were some of the skills he has had to learn. “There were a lot of trials and tribulations and there was a huge sigh of relief after I had successfully fitted the
crank shaft and the crank case.” Asked if he meant to put the 130-horse power motor into an aircraft Alan said, “Yes, I am half way, or nearly three quarters of the way through building a
single wing plane. It will only need thirty or forty metres for take off.” And as Janice said in thanking Allan, “The size of the task you have undertaken is absolutely amazing.”
