p Paparoa Primary School students came together to celebrate the new logo now set up outside the school on a new sign. “For the past year, Paparoa School has been doing extensive surveying of its community, students, whanau and staff to find out what they want the school to be like in three years’ time,” said principal Simon Schuster. “We are excited to announce our new school vision: ‘Vibrant, active learners for an ever-changing world’. Through this process, we have also designed a new school logo, which reflects the new direction we are on. The logo represents our connection to the land, the Kaipara Harbour, the Kauri Coast and our journey towards success. All of these initiatives, coming together set the direction of our school for the coming years.”
Mangawhai wharf rejected u by Andy Bryenton
Community support has been ‘ignored’ in the Northland Regional Council’s decision to refuse resource consent to a proposed historic wharf project in Mangawhai, say the trust that had already secured more than half a million dollars to make it a reality.
An interactive experience Once again the Otamatea Repertory Theatre is exploring boundaries …

The application to rebuild the historic wharf in Mangawhai was refused outright by hearing commissioners acting on behalf of the NRC. The wharf project had earlier this year received the blessing of the Provincial Growth Fund, along with a $600,000 grant to aid construction.
Colin Leach, chairman of the Mangawhai Historic Wharf Trust, said the decision was ”illogical”, but not a surprise. “There was no evidence presented to the hearing that increasing human activity on the harbour and foreshore over the past 20 years has affected the
fairy tern population and its capacity to breed. It appears then that the commissioners gave the speculation that it might do so a greater weight than the interests and support of the community for the wharf.” continued on page 3 …

She and her horse Sprite are raising awareness and funds for the Leg Up Trust, which provides horse riding experiences for disadvantaged children. After a year of travelling the beaches of Northland and rounding the cape, Larissa re-entered the Kaipara on the east coast last weekend. Kaipara District is one of only a few, which can be visited twice on a circumnavigation of the country, thanks to the layout of the map. With a start-finish point in the Hawke’s Bay, it means that Larissa and Sprite’s huge adventure is almost on the home stretch.

Mangawhai wharf rejected
Nominations open for council
3
u by Paul Campbell
An official nomination period has opened from Tuesday, November 24 for a vacant seat on the Northland Regional Council, with a warning for prospective candidates to get their nomination form in early to avoid any problems, which may arise.
p The coalition government’s Provincial Growth Fund announced support in July for the Mangawhai Historic Wharf, totalling $600,000 — money now lost to the town along with $120,000 in resource consent costs raised by locals
Counter arguments and a final decision were made by Independent Hearing Commissioners Sharon McGarry and Dr Rob Lieffering. “We consider the proposed wharf structure itself would increase human activity within an area of the harbour that is significant to one of the most successful breeding New Zealand fairy tern pairs,” they concluded. “While we acknowledge the amendment to the application goes some way to addressing disturbance effects on the New Zealand fairy tern, it will certainly still encourage additional human activity and bring such activity significantly closer to an area of the harbour that is important to fairy tern foraging and reproductive success.” “I am disappointed that their final decision means the Mangawhai Historic Wharf will not be proceeding now,” commented Kaipara Mayor Dr Jason Smith. “As mayor, I have been supportive of the project and encouraged the PGF fund to support this project, which it did with a conditional grant announced in the middle of the year. I understand that commissioners have found the merits of the trust’s wharf project have been outweighed by conservation risks.
“It is important that the community moves forward together now and I’d like to see the proponents and the opponents of the wharf work together on visionary projects for the future of Mangawhai.” Mr Leach juxtaposed the wharf plan with the contentious Mangawhai Central development, a significant boost in housing and population for the east coast town. “Interestingly, the main opponents seem to think another 1,000 households, along with their dogs and boats, living in the immediate vicinity is not a threat. Neither DOC, who flew up a large team from Wellington, or Forest and Bird have objected to Mangawhai Central but strongly pushed the view that the wharf would effectively lead to the extinction of the fairy tern.” The community raised $120,000 for resource consent costs, and a $600,000 grant came from the government, to be used should resource consent be granted. These funds are now lost to the Mangawhai community if the wharf is not built. Mr Leach says that the trust is keen to hear feedback from the community before deciding on its next steps, which could include an appeal to the Environment Court. ¢
The seat is for the Whangarei Urban seat left vacant with the recent resignation of former councillor John Bain. It is open for any New Zealand citizen who is enrolled as a parliamentary elector anywhere in the country, as long as the nomination comes from two constituents in the NRC ward involved. Electoral Officer Dale Ofsoske says the by-election process effectively begins in earnest with the opening of the formal nomination period, which runs until Tuesday, December 22. “Those seeking nomination must have their completed nominations into officials’ hands no later than noon on Tuesday, December 22. I urge p Electoral Officer Dale Ofsoske seeks people not to leave filing their timely nominations nominations too close to that deadline, in case there’s a problem on 0800 922 822 and a form will with the form, which could render be posted. it invalid if it can’t be corrected or Assuming more than one eligible completed in time.” candidate stands in the by-election, Nomination forms, including further postal voting documents will be mailed information for would-be candidates, to the roughly 30,000 eligible voters are available from the NRC office from Tuesday, January 26 2021. The at 36 Water Street, Whangarei, voting period is three weeks from then online at nrc.govt.nz/by-election or until noon on Wednesday, February 17 by telephoning the electoral office 2021 with a result expected in March. ¢

Grand opening at Baylys Beach u by Andy Bryenton
In a landmark weekend for the Baylys Beach community, a new community centre and base for surf lifesaving activities will open this weekend, with a name reflecting the vision that saw it become a reality.
Mayor’s Memo Kia Ora Summer is now upon us, and the days are warmer and longer. Three weeks ago people across Kaipara were increasingly anxious about a looming drought and water storage issues, with concerns about tank water levels, depleted ground water or unseasonably-dry pastures. Following rain, for some people there’s been a shortterm easing of those concerns. But the risk of drought and water shortages in the summer ahead should remain on the watchlist of everyone. Please continue to conserve water wherever possible, keep your gutterings clean and be water wise early. It’s been a kind spring after the dryerthan-normal winter. Across the Kaipara right now the final summer crops are being planted, including leafy salad crops for farmers markets, forage crops for grazing animals and the sweetest of humble local food heroes, the kumara which is all grown in the North Kaipara agricultural delta. The team from the Kaipara Kai Hub have been busy setting up trials of new future-focused crops including peanuts, onions and garlic, now in the ground. There are also two irrigation trials which are commencing, one for large water volume irrigation and one for small water supplies. Additional to this, the Te Tai Tokerau Water Trust is moving fast with its large water storage project planning on Pouto Peninsula. There’s an Expo Day for the Trust’s proposals scheduled for Thursday 26 November (this week) at Southern Rugby Club in Te Kopuru, 11am-2pm. All of this adds up to an extraordinary time for growing the kai in Kaipara, setting this place up for decades ahead of productivity and doing better
what’s already done well, which is grow great food. Also growing rapidly is domestic tourism into Kaipara. For the holiday period ahead we should expect larger numbers of kiwis than ever before will be travelling to our beautiful part of New Zealand for the warmth and the warm hospitality we offer. Mangawhai will soon be bursting at the seams for another hot summer, including Northern Bass, the biggest music festival north of Auckland. With its own appealing low-key character and proximity to Auckland, Kaipara this summer may prove to be very much more popular than we’ve seen before. Get ready! There is so much to be done at this time of year. My great-grandfather, who lived for more than 80 years in Matakohe and died in the 1940s, used to say that there should be an extra month added into the calendar between November and December to get everything done. We’re right at that moment now! For many this can be a breathless few weeks. Keep breathing, stay patient, calm and cool as things heat up towards December. Christmas is coming, one certainty in a year of many changes.

A warm welcome created u by Andy Bryenton
New signage creating a positive brand for Dargaville and welcoming people to the township has been completed, in a joint project involving many local artists and craftspeople as well as the Kaipara District Council.
p Menz Shed craftspeople began the process with a revitalisation of Dargaville’s old welcome signs, now forming part of a triple monument welcoming visitors to the town
The new signs, deployed at the three main entrances to the township, welcome visitors to Dargaville township in English and te reo. These signs have been funded through the Dargaville Placemaking Programme, which has been sprucing up parts of the Dargaville township ready for the tourist season. Just this year, the programme has upgraded Selwyn Park’s lighting, repainted the band rotunda toilets, created a new garden in Kapia Street and overseen the Memorial Park revitalisation initiative. “Having been born and raised in Dargaville, getting to work on these projects to help improve community pride and identity through placemaking has truly been an honour,” says community engagement adviser Lara Stott.
“Working alongside our mana whenua (Te Roroa and Te Kuihi) to provide direction and balanced representation, our phenomenal community groups such as Menz Shed and the Dargaville Lions, and tireless local contractors such as Gabriel Peace (Lighting Revolution) and Craig Burrell (C&C Electrical), and our Downers team in the implementation has been an amazing feat, that I think we can all be proud of.” The artists involved in the design of the signs are both nationally recognised and have close links to the Dargaville area. Local artist Creole Hunia (Te Kuihi and Te Roroa) alongside Malcolm White, have created some iconic recreations of the various sites of the wider Northern Wairoa region that acts as a warm welcome to visitors and returning residents. ¢

The Kaipara District Council is set to clarify and modernise the rules around dangerous buildings, setting out new guidelines for what constitutes a dangerous, affected or insanitary structure in line with the freshly amended building act. To do so, they are requesting public input. Every council in the nation is expected to have a modern, easy to read and understand policy about buildings that aren’t fit for use. That could mean that it is poorly built, it would fail in an earthquake, it would be hard to escape in a fire, or that it is likely to cause injury or disease due to unsafe or unsanitary conditions. The purpose of the policy is ‘to ensure that people who use buildings can do so safely and without endangering their health’, but of course, this covers a myriad of possible issues. The KDC plans to bring its current policy in line with the Building Act, for example, eradicating specific earthquake provisions. “Council is required to review policy made under section 131 of the act every five years,” said the KDC’s media liaison. “Over recent years, amendments to the act have meant that some aspects and content of the current policy are now not required, or must change to meet legal requirements. One amendment to

the act means that council is no longer required to have a policy for earthquakeprone buildings. For completeness, council intends to revoke its current Earthquake-Prone Buildings Policy 2013 as part of this process.” That’s just one example; there is room for many other tweaks and changes to make the policy more streamlined. The KDC invites public input on this topic, through until December 2. Visit kaipara. govt.nz/daib to view the proposed changes, the previous policy and to make a submission. ¢

In a year of change, in the midst of a global pandemic, Lars is thanking his lucky stars for the care provided by the paramedics and pilots of the Northland Rescue Helicopter who for him, were an important part in saving his life just weeks ago. In early September, Lars ended up in hospital feeling breathless and with a tight chest. Following extensive testing, it was deemed he had asthma as the enzyme that is released into the body when a heart attack occurs was barely present in his blood results. Sent home with the instruction to medicate and rest, Lars thought it would be ok. The following weekend the chest pains returned.

building in his chest and the pressure on his chest increasing until he knew something was definitely not right. “I was crook all day. I said to my partner that I think I needed to go to hospital so she ran me up and once we were there, things moved fast. “The young doctor who saw me told me that the enzyme in my system was reading at 560. The week before it was 16. I should not have been alive still,” Lars says. “Within a short space of time, they told me I needed to prepare to be flown to Auckland Hospital for surgery.” This is where the urgency became more emotional – with Auckland still in the grips of a COVID-19 cluster breakout and still in a form of lockdown, Lars told his partner and family to stay put in Whangarei for their own protection.
The following morning, September 7 and Father’s Day, Lars celebrated with his family while still feeling unwell – with the pain
“The hospital staff had made a few phone calls and within no time I was being prepared to be flown to Auckland. I told my partner and my son not to come down with me – she really wanted to fly with me but it just wasn’t worth the risk.”

Water use sites chosen Dargaville markets expand u by Paul Campbell
u by Andy Bryenton
Two demonstration sites for the Kaipara Water project to show how to irrigate high-value crops have been selected by the Kaipara District Council — one at Te Kopuru and the other at Maunganui Bluff north of Dargaville.
What began as a concept has grown into a community event of great proportions, as Dargaville Twilight Markets has undergone a major expansion for their second event.
p Enthusiastic crowds responded to a massive increase in the number of stalls and dinner options by coming out in force to support Dargaville’s new market day p Diane Miller, project manager for the Kaipara Water project with Michael Rope, owner of the Te Kopuru water site two
Kaipara Water is part of Kaipara KickStart led by the council and funded by a PGF grant of $740,000. “The information and data gained from these two demonstration sites will enrich research already available from Kaipara Kai and being used through the Kai Hub work,” says Kaipara Water project manager, Diane Miller. “There were multiple applications from landowners wanting to be involved,
and the project applied strict criteria for evaluating potential sites.” Demonstration site one is on iwi land at Maunganui Bluff and includes an inground irrigation system managed remotely via a web application to deliver water and fertiliser to watermelon, squash and sweetcorn. Site two in Te Kopuru will have a centre pivot irrigator with a 242-metre span to irrigate roughly 10 hectares. First crops include sorghum, maize and sweetcorn. ¢
The markets, held at the Northern Wairoa Boating Club, began in October for Labour Day. Its second outing has proven to be a substantial success, over and above that initial engagement. Stalls offering everything from clothing and jewellery to sculpture and seedlings lined the grassy dockside area last Friday, attracting major crowds. With the boating club’s kitchen available to satisfy the hunger of market patrons, ably assisted by stalls selling their own wares, the formula envisioned by the NWBC’s market day committee was realised. The intent had always
been to attract families who could enjoy a pre-weekend shop while also picking up an al fresco meal. This time there was even the option of dessert as the crew from the Anzac Theatre brought choc-topped ice creams out to promote the cinema. The local volunteer firefighters were also kept busy with a traditional fundraising sausage sizzle. Extended dates for the markets have been confirmed all through summer and into 2021, with the next occasion booked in for December 18, just in time for some last-minute Christmas shopping. ¢

Two staunch supporters of the historic Southern Rugby Club in Te Kopuru have been honoured on national television for their dedication to the community and the game.
The doors opened to the Maungaturoto Riverview Rest Home’s multi-million dollar dementia unit development last weekend for a preview tour by supporters of the project and local community members with an actual opening date expected in the new year.

“We had some 150 visitors to the facility where work is well progressed, followed by a reception at the Maungaturoto Country Club,” said chair of the Maungaturoto Community Charitable Trust, Graham Slatter. At the Country Club, it was learned that local funding stalwart, Albie Paton has contributed $160,000 towards the $3.9 million project from his secondhand shop staffed by volunteers, which also paid for the Country Club reception as all money to the trust goes towards the building project. “Saturday was an opportunity to thank sponsors, major funding organisations and local people of the
Otamatea area and beyond who have supported this project,” Mr Paton said. “First of all, the Provincial Growth Fund and Shane Jones. Without the PGF grant of $1.7 million, we would have taken another two or three years to see the end in sight. “The people of Otamatea have combined through gifts, debentures, goods and services, cattle sales, garden safaris, pub raffles and the like. “We can now see a building that will be completed early in the new year.” The dementia unit is the first of several stages at the rest home complex expected to include 24/7 hospital care in a future undertaking. ¢

Despite high average annual rainfall across Northland, a lack of storage means much of this water can’t be retained for use at times of shortage. An interactive experience Once again the Otamatea Repertory Theatre is exploring boundaries with a new offering called The Verdict, an interactive dinner theatre show, created and directed by Peter Flower.

The Dargaville Community Development Board is encouraging residents of Dargaville to consider the appearance of the town, ahead of what promises to be a huge tourist season. The message is for everyone to pitch in, according to their means and investment in the success of Dargaville. “As we gear up to the Christmas Holidays, it is time to take a look around at what our great little town looks like from a visitor’s perspective,” says DCDB spokesperson Sue Curtis. “If we all take some responsibility for the look of Dargaville, we can make it better, brighter and even more welcoming. The easiest contribution is to keep waste to a minimum and always place your rubbish in a bin. However, it could be something small like having a spray bottle of weedkiller in your business, and to take a moment every now and again to deal with the weeds rearing their heads outside your place of work. It will only take a moment but will make a huge difference if we all do it.” Sue and her development board colleagues are full of praise for landlords who have made an effort to paint and water blast their store frontages, shop owners who have invested in new, beautiful signage and decoration, and of course, those who have embraced the festive spirit to install Christmas

themed window displays. All will be seen by an expected record number of tourists in 2020-21, with Kiwis unable to vacation overseas looking north for sunshine and recreation. “With so many tourists coming through, the situation is like having friends and relatives visit for the holidays,” says Sue. “If we all do a little bit, we can present an image that’s in line with our recent status as one of New Zealand’s friendliest towns; then these people will come back based on that good impression.” ¢

“It promises to be a fun-filled evening where audience members become defendants, witnesses and jury in the most entertaining range of lawsuits ever to double-cross the bench,” says ORT’s Maura Flower. The interactive concept was first introduced to local audiences by recently appointed ORT Life Member, Peter Matheson, who directed This is Your Captain Speaking — the theatre’s first interactive dinner theatre experience. “People who came last year really enjoyed being hijacked in the bus and having to go through security, and then they had the experience of
being a passenger in an aeroplane,” said Maura. “Only three shows of The Verdict are available at the Maungaturoto Country Club, on Saturday, November 28 at 6pm, Sunday, December 5 at 6pm and Sunday, December 6 at 5pm. “Tickets are $60 each, and this includes a two-course served buffet meal and a complimentary drink. “So, gather a few friends together — and come along for a great night of fun.” Bookings are essential, and tickets are available at Tony’s Lotto Shop or contact Maura Flower 022 354 2670. ¢

Firefighting’s toughest challenge u by Andy Bryenton
Last Saturday firefighters from all across New Zealand flocked to the Sky Tower in Auckland to take part in the 16th annual Sky Tower Stair Challenge, raising money for leukaemia and blood cancer research. Local firefighter Glen Orford of the Maungaturoto Brigade is one Kaipara entrant in this gruelling challenge. It will see 1000 Fire Emergency New Zealand first responders scale the 320 metres of stairwell inside the tower. That equates to 1,103 stairs, tackled while wearing full ‘level two’ fire fighting kit, which includes a helmet, fire-resistant pants and jacket, boots, a mask and gloves. Tony Scott developed the Firefighter Sky Tower Stair Challenge event in 2005 as a fundraiser for Leukaemia & Blood Cancer New Zealand,” say challenge organisers. “Over the years both FireUp Events and LBC teams have worked together to develop a comprehensive event and fundraising model, which is now consistently raising over $1 million. The Firefighter Sky Tower Stair Challenge is a fun and great way of raising funds while helping the seven Kiwis diagnosed with a blood cancer every day.” Last year’s record for the colossal climb went to Josh Harrison from Mt Wellington, reaching the top of the tower in 8 mins 34 seconds. The fastest

Fireworks out of season u by Andy Bryenton
Fireworks are still flying weeks after Guy Fawkes Day, and local residents, farmers and the fire service are calling for responsibility before a disaster occurs. Spooked livestock and the potential for fires as the region dries out are both concerns, above and beyond disturbance of the night-time peace. One local farmer in the Colville Road area, who asked not to be named in the media, says that irresponsibly used fireworks have cost him dearly. “We’ve had three mobs of calves totalling 100 head in all go on a rampage with fright due to fireworks let off in mid-November,” said the cattleraising specialist. “They’ve flattened 50 metres of wire and batten fence, in some places breaking the wire. A calf only six weeks old would have to be travelling pretty fast to snap steel wires and splinter wooden battens. It’s surprising that they only sustained minor injuries.” Of equal concern, as firework users hoard their crackers for summer use, is the potential for bushfires like those that ravaged Australia earlier this year. Already the Kaipara region’s scrub areas are in the ‘extreme’ warning level for wildfires, and the temperatures are only getting hotter and drier. Fire and Emergency NZ has not yet issued a ‘fire by permit only’ order. However, when it does, law enforcement advises that fireworks count as a

permit-required blaze. FENZ national adviser for fire risk management Todd O’Donoghue spoke out before November 5 about the sad statistics from the previous year. He stated that fire crews attended 237 fireworks-related call-outs in 2019, just around Guy Fawkes week. Popular opinion may be with those who wish to see a ban on private sales. Surveys this year and last put support for civic-council led public displays and an end to private firework sales at between 70 and 90 per cent. ¢

Lashings of rain and sun right on top of each other. Humidity, you can cut with a machete. No, it’s not the tropical jungle, it’s your back yard this November, though you could be forgiven for getting the two confused. Now it’s time to tidy up the wilderness ready for holiday guests. What’s the play? Short of roping in a herd of billy goats, or massed chorus of men with weed whackers, there’s plenty of new options to deal with overgrown greenery. Technology has progressed in this field faster even than in computing or automobiles, meaning that your rattly old push mower or rusty hedge trimmer may be obsolete many times over. Talking to the experts; there are three big trends, which are gaining attention in outdoor power equipment. The first is the massive price drop and quality increase in ride-on mowers. Once the preserve of cricket stadium groundskeepers, these machines have become more stable, powerful and easier to maintain in recent years. The features from what was once a $10,000plus machine are now available in a unit less than half that price. Gone are
S

p Left it too long? Shaggy overgrown lawns are no match for modern mowing technology but might choke older machines
the confusing controls, cats-cradle of belts and underpowered motors of the 1970s as well. Those who have always wanted a ride-on but who were put off by the spectre of difficult maintenance and cleaning really should look at what’s coming down the line in 2020. The second thing to look out for is creeping upkeep. Older, more temperamental units, like that hedge trimmer that just won’t ever start or that mower with the wonky carburettor, end up costing more in repairs than upgrading to newer technology that’s more reliable in the long-term. Sometimes the difference between a
whole new machine and the repair costs for an old banger is within $100 or so; it’s a no brainer. Then, there’s the option to switch out petrol power for electric batteries. A growing trend, which is only getting more logical as power packs get lighter and brushless motors pack more punch. If your pull start is giving you nothing but one arm bigger than the other, perhaps it’s time to go electric? No matter which route you choose, nature will keep delivering spring after spring of unruly back yard foliage. How you turn it into an outdoor entertainment area is up to you. A bit of forethought might save a ton of cursing this year. ¢

HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT? Having some good time out u by Paul Campbell
So the holiday season is looming large in our thoughts, and while the borders remain closed for the Covid event, it rather follows that with friends and relatives unable to fly overseas, you might find unexpected guests on your doorstep. In one case of our acquaintance, email messages have already gone out to suggest the pandemic should keep certain cousins, uncles and aunties in their own back yards these upcoming holidays. In fact, it is advice that is socially responsible too. However, what about the relatives or just old friends who decide heading to your nice place on the coast, or in the countryside, is better than hanging out in the big city? The holidays are a special time for some, perhaps the only time all year they get to see other family members. As special as these occasions are, we all know a family, it might even be your family, for whom get-togethers are often fraught with trepidation, concern, and in some cases fear, because of the behaviour of one family member. That individual always manages to say the wrong thing, act inappropriately, irritate others, wants to be the centre of attention, arrives late, is never happy and wants you to suffer also. If their disruptions ruin a long-awaited, carefully planned family reunion, in their eyes, so be it — and it is never their fault. Having such people is a guaranteed way to ruin any social activity, so it

might be wise to set boundaries before the visit starts. In these Covid times, perhaps they should go to the nearest campground rather than pitch a tent on your back lawn. Our aforementioned acquaintance, by the way, has pinned a ‘premises under quarantine’ sign to his farm gate, “just to get rid of that ‘mate’ who decides to call in after 10 years, because he can’t go to Fiji as usual.” Inevitably, you may have to welcome family to your home, and there’s one way of making sure stress is kept to a minimum. In the Kaipara, this should be rather easy. When the city relatives are booked in, set up an activity plan. Keeping them busy will keep them out of your hair! So
send them to The Kauri Museum for a good full day, to the west coast beaches, for another. Trounson Kauri Park, or climb Tokatoka. A day at Mangawhai beach is another idea, A shopping trip to Whangarei. Even suggest they head off for a couple of days to see Paihia and Cape Reinga. Make that three days. Four? With any luck, time should fly, and you can get back to that glass of wine and a good book under the sun umbrella. Peace and quiet at last. ¢

Crowning the king of anglers u by Andy Bryenton
It’s a tradition going back more than three decades, and one which promises the ’holy trinity’ for Kaipara anglers; good fishing, big prizes and the chance to win bragging rights as the region’s ‘king’. The 32nd Annual King of the Kaipara fishing contest is gearing up for a big year, and tickets are on sale now at Nola’s Sports. On December 12 contestants will gather at Kellys Bay for an early start. Daylight savings will see the dawn rise just before the official start at 6am. The Metservice predicts a hot and humid December, with slightly warmer than average ocean surface temperatures and a high likelihood of sunshine for the day. However, no amount of rain can dampen the enthusiasm for this famous local angling event, as was seen in 2018 when a deluge during prizegiving did nothing to change the party atmosphere. In fact, during the years, rain or shine, there has always been a hearty turnout of fishers contesting the six big categories of the tournament. This year there are prizes aplenty up for grabs, across the species of kingfish, kahawai, trevally, snapper and gurnard. There are three podium prizes for each species of fish, and a team
prize in the mix as well for the heaviest four kingfish brought in by a team of anglers. If the prizes from previous years are an indication, there will be some very happy winners on the day, as weighing wraps up by 4pm at the Kellys Bay weigh station. Another great part of the fun comes after the day on the water, when contestants gather for the weigh-in and prize-giving to enjoy some hot food made available by the Kellys Bay committee and often a few cold drinks as well. Rivals with rod and reel swap stories about the ones that got away and compare notes on the ones that didn’t, making for a great end to the day’s fishing. For those keen to try their luck and pit their skill against the fish of the Kaipara Harbour, the first step is to pay a visit to contest organiser and experienced

Bring ‘em to the boat u by Andy Bryenton
The boats are being tuned up and the tackle boxes loaded for 2020’s King of the Kaipara, with keen anglers counting down the days until they get on the water. For those who wish to follow suit, the time to get your vessel shipshape is right now. From motors and cooling systems to fuel tanks and pumps to safety gear, the ultimate article in the fisher’s arsenal is often their vessel, taking the experience beyond the beach. There’s a lot to consider as a captain, and the window of opportunity for giving the entire maritime rig a once-over is shrinking daily. From electrical and gas systems through marine radio and distress beacons, down to the hull and the trailer, the message from boat specialists is ‘come and talk to us soon’. The good weather since Labour Day has seen a sudden uptick in demand for boat servicing and maintenance, and those in the know say that it pays to beat the rush. The King of the Kaipara sees many boats head out on the water, and is seen by many to herald the start of summer fishing in our part of the country. Of course, canny captains and crews have been out there enjoying the angling year-round, but there’s a certain serenity to be enjoyed out on the water
in summer. With peace of mind that your boat’s ready to handle the sometimes changeable weather of the Kiwi maritime environment, it’s time to get down to finding those big fish. There are certainly some monsters out there for the boating angler to score, and sometimes competitions bring the biggest to the surface. The national record for a snapper caught on an eight-kilogram line, for example, was taken out by Hauraki Gulf fisherman Neil Gorringe, who battled a one-metre long, 14.75kg snapper to the boat a year ago. Some of the biggest of these fish have been caught in New Zealand, so it could be anybody’s competition. Two of the world’s biggest ever kingfish have also been caught in New Zealand waters, weighing in at 50.6kg and 49.8kg respectively. With these species as well as trevally, gurnard and kahawai in the mix for the King of the Kaipara, there’s no knowing who will tip the scales for victory. ¢

Method 1. Using a mortar and pestle, mash the 4 paste ingredients together to form a paste. Set the paste aside. Blend the tomatoes and onion together in the bowl of a food processor until the mixture is smooth. 2. Heat the butter in a large fry pan and add the tomato mixture. Fry the mixture until most of the liquid has evaporated, then add the paste and cook until it is fragrant – about 3 minutes. Add the spices, stir to combine and cook for a further 2 minutes. Add the kumara and coconut milk. Reduce the heat and cook gently for 20 minutes, until the kumara is almost cooked. The sauce should thicken naturally. 3. Add the fish to the curry sauce and cover the pan. Cook the fish until it is just beginning to flake. Serve with a squeeze of lemon and boiled rice.

Microbial protein — the gold standard by Alltech (NZ) Limited

These are not independent objectives, as producing more microbial protein is done by producing more microbes, which in turn results in more fibre break down. A cow is an interesting creature in that protein absorbed by the cow is either protein from the diet, or from the bugs that grow and reproduce in the rumen. It is this protein from these bugs, termed microbial protein that has several nutritional advantages. All protein is composed of amino acids, the so-called ‘building blocks’; whether it is animal protein such as meat or milk, microbial protein, or plant protein. The amino acid building blocks of microbial protein closely match the amino acids found in muscle and milk. That means microbial protein is ideally suited to provide a cow’s amino acid needs. Furthermore, microbial protein is not affected by rumen degradation. Attempts to reduce rumen degradation of dietary protein lead producers and nutritionists to look for expensive ‘bypass protein’. Microbial protein is naturally produced protein that achieves the same purpose, and it is made in the cow, herself. By increasing microbial protein production, less total dietary protein is required. Opportunities arise for dairy
farmers to reduce nitrogen loading on the environment and increase the efficiency of nitrogen capture by the animal. Further efficiencies can be gained by controlling the release of non-protein nitrogen in the rumen. Certain technologies like Optisync™ can be incorporated into rations to improve nitrogen
retention by ruminants and improve the environmental footprint. In summary, the best source of protein for ruminants is actually microbial protein coming from the bugs in the rumen. Adopting technologies that aid in producing microbial protein is sound practice.
