“Here we go again,” says former Kaipara Mayor now Northland Regional Council member, Graeme Ramsey referring to a similar situation the community faced in 2002 — resulting in a $600,000 renovation of the court house as it was seen as essential. “10 years ago we refurbished a building that had serviced us well for 90 years and we want it to service us for another 90.” The Minister said that the renovations were not in vain as the court will still be utilised. “In becoming a Hearing Court, the Dargaville District Court retains its full status as a District Court. The same range of scheduled court hearings

would continue to be provided. This model already works well in other locations such as Ruatoria and Kaikoura.” He said that there is a need to modernise the way that court services are delivered as people want to access information outside working hours and nine out of 10 people prefer to pay fines using technology or through the post office adding that only six people per week pay their fines over the court counter. Mr Ramsey said that shifting services to online was limiting people’s access to justice and not increasing it. continued on page 6…

Year 12 Rodney College student, Hayley Aldworth has always wanted to go on the Spirit of Adventure and now she can. She has recently been awarded a scholarship by Mangawhai Zonta, an organisation aimed at advancing the status of women, and will make her voyage in March 2013 where she’s looking forward to learning teamwork, communication and leadership skills. President of Mangawhai Zonta, Sue Poynter describes her as an “outstanding candidate” and is confident that she will be a worthy advocate for young women in the community. “The criteria for the award include demonstration of leadership potential and we are confident that Hayley will benefit from her experience on the

Spirit of Adventure to enhance her skills and will use them in her future endeavours.” It is not Hayley’s first time in a leadership role, she was coach of the Wellsford School netball team, house leader for Rodney College and she recently got named Sports Captain for her senior year. “It will involve running all the sports events and it was really cool to be named that,” says Hayley. After school she wants to go on a gap year to Edinburgh and hopefully work as a nanny before returning to New Zealand to train as a primary school teacher.

www.kaiparalifestyler.co.nz Student Career Management Competencies Last year the ‘Career Education Benchmarks’ were published after an extensive development process. The purpose of this was to provide schools, BOTs, students and parents with a tool to assist in the development and implementation of effective career support programmes in schools. The Benchmarks look at Leadership, Programmes and Services and Information Systems in schools, and most importantly ‘Student Career Management Competencies’. The basic principle here is that the student should be at the centre of all that we do and that building the individual’s career management skills will enable the young person to make good career decisions both at school, after school and on into life. So what are Career Management Competencies? There are four main areas of skills that cover : 1. Self Knowledge: What knowledge, skills, attitudes and values have students already developed and what are the key influences in their lives? What capabilities do they already possess and what will they need to progress in their lives? What things may change as they grow and mature such as motivations and aspirations and who can support them as they discover this? 2. Future possibilities and opportunities: What opportunities that relate to the student’s strengths, interests and particular points of difference are available ? Understanding some of the realities and requirements of life, learning and work opportunities such as requirements for jobs

or courses, work ethics and contributions to community and society. How to access information to explore their life, learning and work opportunities. 3. The consequences of choices and decision making: Understanding that life, learning and work decisions reflect a series of choices. Although there may be barriers there are usually solutions. There are many ways students can create opportunities and be prepared to take advantage of chance opportunities. Helping students to identify their motivations, aspirations and available options and to use this knowledge to identify their next step. 4. The ability to plan and take action: Students are able to develop realistic plans and use their plans to guide their decisions and actions. Students can complete the actions needed to move into the next step such as completing school qualifications, accessing experiences and opportunities or acting to secure future education, training or work. Students can be flexible if necessary such as coping with unplanned changes or setbacks. Where is your child in all this? Next week I will look at how parents and families can help students develop these lifelong career management skills. Ms Chiaroni Career Advisor Dargaville High School

PM’s accolade for poet The awards are administered by Creative New Zealand and each year chosen by the public, with nominations this year double those received in 2011. Those are assessed by an expert literary panel and recommendations forwarded to Creative New Zealand for approval. Last night’s presentation capped an eventful time for Sam, following his appointment as a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2010 and a spate of publications of books of his poetry, which followed a decade of relative literary silence. Overall he has published more poetry books than any other New Zealander, most recently, Doubtless: New and Selected Poems in 2008, Backroads, Charting a Poet’s Life in 2009, Chords and Other Poems in 2011 and Knucklebones: Poems: 1962–2012, which was released this year. Creative New Zealand notes on his latest award state: ‘Though some might consider his natural performance environment to be a public bar, Sam Hunt has read in the New Zealand legislative chamber; performed in Australia, New York and Washington DC; featured with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and members of the group Split Enz; and made regular television appearances.” Now 66, he still enjoys going back on the road to perform at small intimate venues around the country.

Dargaville a health showcase Stand up to violence say riders  by Rose Rees-Owen

 by Kim Munro

Health services are better in Dargaville than many other areas according to New Zealand Institute of Rural Health, and business manager, Brent Nielsen was here to find out why.

Over 150 motorcycles rode into Selwyn Park, Dargaville on Saturday, where around 1,000 people gathered to welcome the riders and support the White Ribbon Ride message of anti-violence towards women and children.

 Dr Vivienne Adair and Heather Coster from AC Research Associates interviewing secretary for the Ruawai Lions, Dorothy Simpson.

“We want to showcase Dargaville as a model for other rural communities and publish a report that will go to the Ministry of Health as well as being readily accessible for other communities on our website.” The institute has commissioned AC Research Associates to interview members of the community, emergency services, and health service providers to uncover secrets behind Dargaville’s success. Mr Nielsen said among the themes emerging was community engagement. “The medical centre and the hospital contain equipment that was fundraised for by the community and having the Kaipara Community Health Trust with part ownership with the hospital is unique.” The trust, dedicated to providing health services to the community, owns 46 per cent of the hospital and Mr Nielsen added that having the Medical Centre, Hospital as well as the Iwi provider, Te Ha O Te Oranga all located together with excellent co-operation and afterhours emergency care were other factors contributing to its success. “I come from Cambridge and if I was to call my GP after hours it would go to an answer phone in Hamilton, half an hour away.” He said that transport had been Find

identified as a barrier to good health in rural areas and the health shuttle provided by KCHT was an example of a service that not many districts have. “Many communities are faced with hours of travel to see a doctor, even for an emergency, and Dargaville is blessed with the services in this town.” Mr Nielsen stresses the importance of services because places classified as “independent urban areas” which Dargaville falls under, shows the highest rates for potentially avoidable mortalities as well as health issues including cardiovascular disease, malignant disease and renal disease due to a high number of beneficiaries and an aging population. At least 20 per cent of the people living in Dargaville are retired and 55.4 percent have an annual income of $20,000 or less according to a report compiled by the institute.

The ride is one of 80 nationwide to raise awareness about White Ribbon Day which advocates for the elimination of violence against women worldwide. Speaker, Tony Brooking, highlighted New Zealand’s disturbing statistics, “14 women die each year due to a member of their own family and one in three women are affected by domestic violence. I have three sisters of my own — so that’s half of my sisters suffering some form of abuse. If it’s happening next door, don’t draw the curtains, phone the 0800 number.” The free event kicked off at 11am with riders welcomed into the park by Selwyn Park Primary kapa haka group followed by speakers and performances along with stalls from victim support,

SOS Kaipara and youth services along and activities for the kids. Phil Paikea, co-organiser, made a plea for community leaders to make a stand. “I recently visited a young persons’ facility for 13 to 17 year olds. I wept openly at drawings the kids had made on their cell walls — one showed this young boy wrapping his arms around his mum and dad, praying to God to help his family. These young men are crying out for answers — our leaders have the power to influence, they need to stand up.” Nadene Devonshire, case worker at Te Puna O Te Aroha for 19 years says, “we’ve come a long way, there is better awareness now, but we have a long way to go.” Information Line 0800 456 450.

Greenways meet golfing legend  by Rose Reese-Owen

Workers from Greenways Trust, who employ disabled as well as able bodied people, got the chance to meet professional golfer, Stuart Reece when he landed by helicopter at Northern Wairoa Golf Club in Baylys Beach. Among the eight greenway workers was Helen Wedding who thought it was “pretty cool” to see the helicopters and was keen to fly in one and Andy Daly got shown around the cockpit and

said he had recently flown in a chopper in Rotorua. They fulfill a variety of contracts including clearing trees and general maintenance around the golf grounds

Toxic shellfish warning The public are being warned not to collect or eat shellfish from the Kaipara Harbour and the coastline north to Maunganui Bluff. The warning was issued by the Northland District Health Board last week after shellfish at the harbour entrance were shown to have Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP) toxins above the regulatory level. People are being advised to avoid kina, mussels, pipis, tuatua, toheroa, oysters, cockles and scallops from affected areas. “Anyone eating these toxic shellfish is potentially at risk of illness” said Medical Officer of Health, Dr Clair Mills. “Cooking shellfish does not remove the toxin.”

Symptoms of PSP usually occur within 12 hours after eating affected shellfish and include numbness and tingling around the mouth, face or extremities, difficulties in swallowing or breathing and dizziness or double vision. PSP may cause paralysis and respiratory failure in severe cases. The shellfish coordinator for Northland, Elizabeth Watts, advises that “the warning is likely to remain in place for at least two weeks.” The Northland DHB Public Health Unit will continue to monitor the situation and advise of any changes.

From the Hibiscus Coast, Mr Reece arrived with seven friends and says

around once a month they like to fly to different greens to enjoy the sport. He has spent over 13 years touring internationally with more than 15 tournament wins to his name, including the 1982 NZPGA title and the Queen Mary Open in California. Now he mainly teaches at the Peninsula Golf Club in Whangaparoa but still plays professionally in senior tournaments.

Flying instructor surprised by accolade  by Kim Munro

Senior flying instructor, Murray Foster, who has been recognised by the Royal New Zealand Aero Club for his services to aviation, says he was ‘taken aback by the award — flying is just something I love to do.’ Murray’s love of flying began when he was 21. “I flew for the first time by winning a draw for three hours flying — and I was hooked.” Known for his good humour and patience, he has logged an impressive 3,000 flying hours volunteering his time as a teacher for over 40 years. Peter Randell presented the accolade at the recent regionals held at the Dargaville Aero Club and said, “Murray’s unstinting services to the local community and to the aviation industry in general are beyond measure.” He obtained his private pilot’s license in 1969 and shortly after set up a ground aviation ‘training school’. “There were no courses available when I was studying for my licence, so I thought it would be a good idea to set up a ground school.” Past student, Colin Barlow went on

to gain his commercial licence and says, “Murray’s an excellent instructor — he has the patience of a saint.” He is now an authorised testing officer and performs flight reviews of pilots, issues advanced licences and ratings and as the club’s chief flying instructor he now teaches the teachers.

Offenders and sponsors maintain gardens  by Rose Rees-Owen

Watermelons, onions, tomatoes, egg plant, feijoas and many more fruit and vegetables are on the menu courtesy of Violet Hutchingson and the Dargaville Probations Service Centre. Two days a week offenders sentenced to community work and their sponsors, Noeline Donaldson and Clara Tito who volunteer their time, attend to the Te Kopuru Community Garden and maintain it. Violet is a Senior Community Work Supervisor and says that it has a positive impact on offenders teaching them how to garden and after Christmas they will also use the church’s kitchen to hold cooking classes. “They really take pride in their work

and many have started their own gardens. We have one offender who wants to continue working once he’s finished his hours.” She began the gardens two years ago with all materials, including the land, donated by the community. “It’s my cousin’s land and he gave it to me to use — before it was sitting here doing nothing and now it’s turned into these immaculate gardens.” The large variety of fruit and vegetables

Battle to save the court continues “We want to talk to a person — especially when it comes to highly jargoned language like the courts.” Among the public were a number of Justice of the Peace who raised concerns including unscheduled bail hearings held at the police station instead of in court. “The court has been designed so that judges and justices are safe and in a police station there won’t be the same level of security,” says JP, Rod Sudlow. “Police stations are not neutral ground for defendants,” says JP, Len Lulich who added that more and more are expected of JP’s who volunteer their time. Green MP, David Clendon said he felt the meeting was an announcement of what will happen instead of hearing public concerns and feels community law is being reduced. The Minister remains comfortable that the proposal is administrative in nature moving services online and that the overwhelming majority of people will

“Five years ago, I would never consider it. I would be staying in fancy hotels and travelling to tourist destinations but I’ve done that and now that I’m single and I have time on my hands, I want to contribute to the world positively.” He has recently returned from Russia where he helped look after children who have been neglected and sometimes abandoned by their substance addicted parents. “Most of the babies are suffering from withdrawal symptoms coming off alcohol or harder drugs. One was six months old and I was the first male that child had seen — the mother was a 42 year old prostitute who drank meth during her pregnancy.” He found the non-profit organisation, Cross Cultural Solutions while searching the internet and said he was attracted to Russia because

he finds it fascinating to be in a place where he doesn’t understand the language and the culture is completely new. “It was an amazing experience and at the moment I’m working as a contractor to save up enough money to go to Lima, Peru to do a similar programme in June next year.” He said that most of the volunteers that he met were in their twenties but the age gap was shattered through their similar experience and a shared desire to make a positive change in a child’s life and keeps in contact with the volunteers. In 2014, while many will desire to go to the Soccer World Cup in Brazil as a holiday destination, Basil plans to volunteer on Mercy Ships Australia, a 16,000 tonne hospital ship which provides free medical surgeries to impoverished countries.

The show, on January 11 and 12, will be performed outdoors on land beside the old manse near where the settlers landed and tells the story of a migration that spanned more than 30 years from the highlands of Scotland to Nova Scotia and on to Australia and finally New Zealand. “Expect the works,” says museum manager, Patsy Montgomery. “This will be the most spectacular outdoor event ever staged in Northland. “ There will be activities on both sides of the river along with music, drama, narration by Dame Fiona

Northland teacher, Alister Williams, plays the ‘founding father’, the enigmatic Presbyterian minister, the Reverend Norman McLeod who led the highlanders to Nova Scotia and later to Waipu. “Rev McLeod was integral to the stories of the families whose descendants continue to live and work in Waipu,” says Mr Williams. Tradesmen Building and renovating while the sun shines For those wishing to build or renovate — or just to get some help with those projects around the house — the best season for outdoor work is now underway. Of course the holidays are looming, but with long daylight hours and ample sunshine waiting in the new year it’s a

great time to sit down with your local professionals and make plans, putting yourself at the top of the list when they (and you) return from some much needed R and R. Starting at the top of the house, this is the best time of the year to re-roof — not only is it safest to take up the old iron or tiles when heavy rain is less likely to ruin proceedings, it’s also a good time to talk to your local roofers • Pre purchase Inspections, Caravan W.O.F. at Plumbing and Heating. That’s because • Household Wiring they have a competition underway in • Certificate of Verification testing (C.O.V.) which one lucky customer will win back • Portable tool and appliance testing the price of their roof, and another for their ceiling insulation. When your roof • Registered Electrical Inspector is wide open, it’s of course the logical time to install insulation, as well as ventilation piping and solar hot water systems. Micheal Jenkins Electrical Solutions and Inspections are there to help with all the Ph: 0274 717 331 A/h: 09 439 4102 wiring in your home — those mod cons won’t work without power, after all! Tradesmen Peace of mind for a better build  by Andy Bryenton

The Certified Builders Association of New Zealand is an alliance of fully qualified, experienced builders adhering to the strictest guidelines of conduct, workmanship and ongoing upskilling. With members across the nation, the familiar blue and red logo of the Certified Builders has come to represent honest prices and top-notch quality, as well as being a source of peace of mind for customers. Certified Builders take the view that a home (or any building project) is a huge commitment and a sizeable investment, which should last a lifetime. With all that capital on the line it pays not only to deal with fully qualified trade professionals, but also to secure a guarantee. To this end the Certified Builders Association has introduced the most comprehensive independent guarantee in the business — the HomeFirst builders guarantee. The figures speak for themselves — this is a ten year guarantee, offering a decade of coverage just in case something should go wrong. Invaluable for new builds, and a recommended addition to your plans for upgrades, expansions

Darryl TregiDga

and renovations, the HomeFirst builders guarantee provides coverage for many eventualities, including completion of the build by another Certified Builder if disaster strikes and your chosen builder is afflicted by illness or injury. Ten years of coverage means a warm, dry, weathertight home to enjoy, and the guarantee can even be passed on to the new owners if you should sell your home during the first decade. Backed by internationally rated finance company CBL Insurance, the HomeFirst builders guarantee is independent and fair in its application. There are four different types of guarantee available to suit different types of construction projects, but all have been written with transparency, accountability and responsibility in mind — ask your local Certified Builder about your options when you are discussing your new building project. With the peace of mind inherent in a full ten year HomeFirst builders guarantee your new home is assured of being built right, built strong, and built future proof!

What should you expect from your Agribusiness Banker? Having a good banker is important to your farming business. To promote some thought, I have put together some important attributes you should look for in an agribusiness banker. • Quality contact and communication You should expect your banker to drive quality conversations. These conversations should ensure that your banker has a full understanding of your business and is aware of your position and aspirations. At the same time your banker should keep you abreast of any information they have at hand that could be useful. •Pro-active contact In order for your banker to keep up to date with your business and be in the best position to help you, you would expect contact on at least a quarterly basis. Your agribusiness banker should be accessible and available to help; and manage your business in a proactive manner. • Capacity, Knowledge and Experience Your banker needs to understand the industry that you are in, your personal business and bring ideas from other successful businesses’. It is important that ideas are tabled and there are opportunities to run through scenarios before making decisions. •Financial Understanding Your agribusiness banker should be able to interpret financial information and structure

Expect your banker to understand where you and your business want to go! Your strategy, both personally and for your business! Through pro-actively managing your banking requirements and adding value, a strong financial understanding and industry/ business knowledge and experience will ensure you are getting the most from your Agribusiness Banker. Tip: The more the bank understands about your business the more value they can add. About the Authors: David Warne and Shaun Hill are Agribusiness Managers for Westpac. You can contact David, Shaun or another member of the Agribusiness team on 0800 155 177 The information contained in this article is intended as a guide only and is not intended as an exhaustive list of matters to be considered. Persons entering into business should seek their own professional legal, accounting and other advice.

Let’s talk about making your business a cash cow At Westpac, we’ve believed in the strength of rural and agricultural businesses since we opened our doors, almost 150 years ago. This is why we are proud to support the New Zealand Dairy Industry Awards.

Exciting developments are afoot on the site of what was once Munn’s Furniture and Furnishings in Normanby Street, Dargaville. A convoy of trucks laden with designer furniture heralded the arrival in town of Furniture Zone, a fast-growing Kiwi company dedicated to bringing affordable, quality furniture into New Zealand homes. Locals who remember the ‘end of an era’ coverage surrounding the closing down of the iconic Munn’s store will be pleased to know that Furniture Zone have brought back the best of the old with the new, retaining Shane Munn as the manager of their new branch. Shane carries on a tradition of service in the furniture trade to the Kaipara public going back over three quarters of a century, and this third-generation professional is proud to be at the helm of this new venture. Furniture Zone have experienced a meteoric rise to prominence across the country, opening stores in Kaikohe, Hamilton, Christchurch, Auckland, Rotorua, Palmerston North and many more. Coming from a background of manufacturing (and keeping up this tradition through parent company Bed Rumours, purveyors of handcrafted beds), company directors Philip and Barbara Griffith and Tania and

Derin Greenslade are passionate about providing elegant, well-crafted furniture to Kiwi families — and they appreciate the wealth of local knowledge and goodwill Shane brings to the Dargaville team. With a history of creating great value furniture going back to 1986 when they established their first bed factory in Tauranga, Furniture Zone have a philosophy of bringing the best products direct from the manufacturer to the public — keeping prices affordable. The grand opening for Dargaville’s newest furniture superstore is set for the 1st of December, but the doors are open now, and Shane invites you to stop in and visit, and take a look at the range of bedroom and lounge furniture, dining furniture and even kids’ furniture on display. There’s no need to leave town for great bargains for your home!

Bringing home the bacon  by Rose Rees-Owen

After only seven months of owning the Mangawhai Meat Shop, Ange and Dan Klink have picked up a silver medal at the prestigious Devro New Zealand Sausage Competition held recently in Auckland. The gourmet kransky smoked sausage was one of 450 in the competition and winning silver was “awesome and quite exciting” for first time entrant, Dan. Before he left for his OE in London and later Melbourne, Dan completed his apprenticeship at the Mangawhai Meat shop and has come full circle to own it. He says he has always been interested in boutique butcheries although it wasn’t his first career choice. “I wanted to be a chef but my mum tricked me into becoming a butcher — she didn’t want me sitting around doing nothing and suggested the apprenticeship.” Now glad he chose his profession, he satisfies his creativity

by making a range of specialty sausages including, honey lamb and rosemary, and providing quality meat as well as selling a variety of cheeses, seafood, sauces and spices. While Dan has managed butcheries in London and Melbourne for the past 10 years, Ange is new to the scene and it’s quite a change for the previous office worker. “It’s good — it’s really different, I’ve never been involved in customer service but I’m really enjoying the interaction and getting to know the locals.” They met in London then lived in Melbourne for three years and Ange, also a Kiwi says, “it’s good to be home.”

Nanotechnology for macro-sized results We’re only days away from the 8th of December — the day of the big King of the Kaipara fishing contest. And while anglers are preparing themselves mentally and physically for a day of fishing fun, many are also looking beyond the big day to a summer of angling action off the Kaipara’s coast. If you want to maximise your cast distance and put that baited hook out in the deep water when fishing the west coast, there’s a new tool for your fishing arsenal which can add more power and precision. The Veritas range of rods by Abu Garcia are brought to you by Pure Fishing here in New Zealand, and locally you’ll find them on display at Nola Sports. With advanced nanotechnology in their construction, these rods at first feel shockingly light to hold,

but with 2.5 times the impact resistance of graphite, the futuristic material is far more durable, and it provides a little extra ‘snap’ when casting. Well, we say a little, but results from local anglers are more along the lines of ‘phenomenal’. One keen fisherman (and a colleague here at your local newspaper) claims a 30 metre advantage over another leading brand rod of his acquaintance, and as an added bonus the manipulation of graphite

on an atomic level makes the Veritas incredibly strong. The 30 ton rating carried by the Abu Garcia Veritas not only means immense tensile strength, but it also means a stiffer grade of graphite fibres, meaning you can feel every nibble on the hook back up on the beach! Come and see for yourself the balance and weight advantage of these futuristic rods at Nola Sports — and we’ll see you at the King of the Kaipara on the 8th!

Kiwi-made summer fun on the water Old established boatbuilders since the colonial era, the Darroch family bring a history of nautical experience to the trade of building modern boats in a way their forefathers would never have imagined. That’s because they are the name behind Aakron inflatables — the affordable, durable little craft beloved of fishermen, search and rescue, and even the military for their no-fuss, robust and ever-buoyant design. Boaties both here and overseas have taken to the range with enthusiasm, and now Akron offer everything from small tender craft all the way up to spacious R.I.B. boats, able to support powerful outboard motors. With boats from a zippy 2 metres to a multi-purpose 7 metre model, you can pack 2, 5, 10, 30 or more horsepower to

give your inflatable some get up and go. Aakron inflatables have the advantage of being easily folded up and stowed away when not in use — a must for holidaymakers and for skippers with limited deck space available on larger vessels. A clever design featuring multiple inflatable cells and a v-shaped keel as part of the hull increases stability, and interlocking rigid floor plates form a stable platform for what may just be the perfect fishing dinghy — and there’s no need to worry about a hook popping the pontoons, as they are constructed from a super-tough membrane fabric. If you’d like to take a look at what a good, rugged Kiwi inflatable boat can offer, you’ll also be pleasantly surprised by the price. With no import tax and duties it’s smarter to buy from a local firm. Here in Dargaville you’ll find the whole range of Akron boats and motors at Godfrey’s Mowers and Chainsaws… appropriately, your small engine specialists.

Sensational seven-seater points the way forward  by Our Motoring Correspondent

The SUV market has come a long way since the days when these vehicles were seen by many as diesel-drinking behemoths of the highways, irresponsibly large and unsuited for the more refined tasks of the school run and the weekly shop. But times have changed — or rather public perceptions have been changed by the hard work of automotive designers and engineers, who have turned the SUV from a ‘civilianised’ slab of army hardware into a sleek and practical urban ‘swiss army knife’ — the vehicle for all seasons, all families, and all situations. Case in point — luxury marque Porsche already enjoy success with their Cayenne, and it’s been strongly rumoured that both Bentley and Maserati are considering concept four wheel drive machines. That’s why it was a quiet revelation to find myself behind the wheel of the new Kia Sorento R — the eminently eurostyled SUV crafted by Korea’s most goahead auto manufacturer and styled by industry legend Peter Schreyer. Since leaving Germany to work with Kia the redoubtable Mr Schreyer has redefined how the world sees the Kia brand, and if this has been his mission then the Sorento R is his tour de force. Much effort has gone into making large sports utilities feel more like the big sedans they have all but replaced in recent years, and with this seven-seat 2.2 litre turbo diesel it all seems to have clicked. This might seem to belittle the years of R and D which have honed and tuned the Sorento into a vehicle which glides through the corners flat and smooth, handles better than many cars on the road and still has space for seven full-grown adults, but effortlessness is at the core of why the Sorento works. Take the engine, for example. The Sorento does with 2-and-a-bit litres of turbo-assisted power (that’s 145kws and a generous 436 newton-metres of torque,

for the mathematicians) what the SUVs of the 1990s required vast sixes and eights to accomplish. Chop down with the neat little tiptronic shifter and you’ll pass most anything on the highway, all with a whisper rather than a Kenworthlike rumble. Then there’s the sheer sense of space inside — not just seven comfortable seats with ample legroom even for this somewhat bulky correspondent, but also clever niches, cubbies, cup holders and a boot which can engulf a whole holiday’s worth of luggage. Far from Spartan practicality, the Sorento achieves a well-constructed sense of real luxury, too — check out the full-length moon roof on the deluxe Premium model, the heated and ventilated seats, and a suite of electronics including voice activated stereo controls and phone. In a world first, this SUV even parks itself, a feature which should prove much beloved by the urban families who are its target market. The revolution, then, appears to be a fait accompli. Kia have delivered an SUV which is full sized, capable on and off road — and yet still frugal with fuel, quiet, comfortable and even better — it looks amazing, from its eye-catching alloys to the kinetic lines which run front to back. If you’re still of a mind that SUV’s are lumbering, ungraceful things, this should make you think again. And if you think that nothing this good can ever be within your financial grasp, the very reasonable price will make you think very hard indeed about driving home in one!

Better manners – but still formidable! They’re calling it the ‘future of MX’, and with bold words like these you just know that the engineers at Honda were going to deliver a masterpiece with 2013’s all-new CRF450R. The latest generation of what is widely known as one of the world’s best off-road bikes had some big shoes to fill, but a more than positive reception from the motoring press and the riding public has proven once again that evolution, not revolution is the key to honing and sharpening up a bike for serious competition.

Or serious fun — because the key to the new CRF450R is ease of access. With greater mass centralisation to add stability, fully adjustable air suspension and a more ‘gentle’ pull out of the corners to make endurance riding more about the mental than the physical, the new Honda does what few top performance motorsport machines can — it puts superhuman performance into the reach of us mere mortals. Think about it — even the best road car is nowhere near the level of Formula 1. Your yacht won’t be winning the America’s Cup anytime soon. But for a fairly modest price any dirt-riding enthusiast can own a bike which is being heaped with praise by the heavyweights of motocross.

The scalpel has come out to cut weight from the CRF450R — and to lower that all important centre of gravity. This fourth generation bike comes with pneumatic spring forks, compact, lower mufflers and a host of other tweaks which make it handle more like it’s diminutive 250cc brother than the powerful off-roader it is. Honda’s latest looks like being hard to beat in 2013, not only for technical refinement and cost, but on the track as well. Added to the checklist is the fact that it really looks the part, too! A redesign of the planes and angles of the CRF has lent it a lean and predatory aspect, and under all the stylistic cues there has even been space to slightly expand the fuel capacity of its tank, and accommodate those adjustable shocks. After four generations, the CRF450R has been tamed of its sometimes terrifying bite, but it’s still ready to devour miles and miles of dirt!

Obituary

KAIPARA CHRISTMAS CHEER:

what’s on

Neville Guy Thurston Neville Guy Thurston passed away peacefully on October 9, 2012. Neville was born on April 24, 1923, in Fielding, the third of five children born to George and Lily Thurston. The family moved to Tangowahine in 1928 where Neville started school. After a year they bought the farm on Galvins Road, Ruawai which was to become his home for the next 80 years. At 15 he left school and worked on the family farm for a few years before enrolling with the air force where in 1945 he gained his pilot’s license. After a stint in the air force, he returned to Ruawai where he met Lois Montgomery. They were married in 1950 and had one daughter, Sharon. Lois passed away at the age of 37. In 1965 he married Jeanette Martinovich and had four children, Angela, Louisa, Daniel and Simon. “They were a fun couple and the connection they shared didn’t stop with the two of them. It spread effortlessly through the in-laws with rock solid relationships quickly forming between dad and mum’s parents and siblings,” says son, Simon. Neville was a man who followed his heart and since his passion for flying hadn’t diminished after his return from the air force, he, along with a group of friends, founded the Otamatea Aero Club. They built a hangar and clubhouse, purchased a Cessna and used a paddock at the end of the farm as an airstrip. In the 1960s, Neville and his brother, Grenfell, purchased the Ruawai and Huarau quarries and established Thurston Transport whilst still running the family farm and milking cows as well as running dry stock and sheep on the back farm. “Dad had done his fair share of truck driving and land work and Uncle Grenfell was a machine when it came to hard work and a meticulous businessman so between the two of them they made a good go of it.”

Circus Kumarani Christmas show: December 1 At 4pm, Circus Kumarani will entertain with an hour and a half show at the Town Hall with a ‘four-act’ Christmas story along with juggling, hooping, globe-walking and clowning. Pre-sale tickets are $15 adult, $10 child, $45 family available from Circus Kumarani, Big River FM and the Kaipara Lifestyler. Christmas in the Gardens: December 1 Picnic at the free community event at Riverside gardens and be entertained by local acts including the Selwyn Primary kapa haka group, the choir from Dargaville Primary, Peter Martin and Anna-Marie Cutts along with interactive Christmas carols, a one-act play and unicycling champion Sam La Hood as well as Cool Bananas with games for the kids. Dinner will be available from food stalls at 6pm with the show kicking off at 7pm. Christmas Parade: December 8 At 12 noon the Christmas floats will once again brighten Victoria Street with the theme this year being ‘the spirit of Christmas.’ Both the Dargaville Lions Club and the Northern Wairoa Lions Club have fundraised throughout the year to put on the event and chairman, Noel Moran says, “It’s a time to bring the community together.” Christmas Wonderland: December 6 — 9.30am-4pm and December 7, 8 — 9.30am-3.30pm Northern Wairoa Lions Club will put on a display of decorated Christmas trees at the Fosters building on Lower Victoria Street. The annual display, which brings festive cheer to Dargaville and raises funds for the Lions club’s community projects, is in its sixth year and co-ordinator Lyn Trounson says it will be impressive. “We will have about 30 trees and this year the emphasis will be on colour” Santa will be there 10am to noon each day and there will also be a variety of Christmas goodies for sale.

He was president of the Northern Wairoa Racing Club for around 20 years until the early 1990s. “Horses were in his blood and he loved nothing better than his time working with them. It was his real passion.” He also served as president of the Ruawai Bowling Club, RSA and Lions clubs and was awarded a Lions life membership in 2003. “Looking after people was dad’s thing and if you came to our place you were getting looked after whether you liked it or not. Since dad died the word I’ve heard used most to describe him is ‘gentleman’ and that’s exactly what he was. He just loved a good sing along and never held back. He treated people, as he would like to be treated and didn’t have an enemy in the world. He was a good friend and the biggest voice in the room.”

Ruawai Christmas Parade: December 15 The Ruawai Promotion and Development group are hoping to paint the town red with their Christmas parade leaving from the community church at 10am. Their optional theme is the letter “R” and subcommittee member, Biddy Marychurch is expecting lots of Rudolf’s. Santa will be there along with quick fire raffles, food stalls, Christmas music and a surprise prize for the best float. Maungaturoto Christmas Week: December 15-23 Maungaturoto Residents Association kicks off the celebrations with a Christmas Parade, December 15 at 5.30pm beginning at the Congregational Church and ending at Maungaturoto Primary School. A community carnival will follow on with old fashioned games as well as a Christmas tree display at the Holy Trinity Church running all the way through to the 25th with donations going to community groups. On the 20-21 there will be a Santa’s grotto in the plunket rooms for a photo opportunity and there will be a prize for best shop window presented at the parade.

Abu’s Nanotechnology manipulates graphite on an atomic level for improved compression strength without sacrificing action or performance. Nanotechnology introduces Nano particles to the resin that binds graphite in fishing rods. This nano enhanced resin supports and boisters graphite fibres by surrounding them with nano-spheres, creating a stronger bond. Veritas rods take advantage of this new technology to deliver an extremely lightweight and balanced rod design that delivers incredible strength and performance.

The Veritas Advantage: •  30 ton graphite construction with Nanotechnology for increased compression strength •  Lightwright screw down padded reel hood •  High density EVA grips for durability and comfort •  Abu designed extreme exposure reel seat provides increased blank contact and sensitivity
