p Ruawai Primary School has for the first time entered a team in the Kaipara Primary School Basketball competition, made up of year five and year six boys and girls. Coached by Paul Rawaho, managed by Natalia Ross, and backed by local businesses Challenge Ruawai, Kaipara Kumara and 4 Square Ruawai, the team have put their best foot forward in brand new uniforms, water bottles, transport and post-game snacks. “Many of the team started with little to no experience on the basketball court but their enthusiasm to learn and improve has seen them get stronger as a team every game,” said school principal, Curtis Gaylor. “With some solid wins to our name we are excited to compete in next week’s finals. We hope this will be an annual event for our Kaipara tamariki.”

“It was a fun morning, and good to have the support once again. Kaipara people are very generous, and they all stepped up,” said Dargaville Ford’s sales manager, Anthony West. At the Dargaville Ford site, the local Lions Club members were cooking and

serving breakfast, raising more than $850 for their efforts. More FM’s John Markby operated the morning radio show live, making announcements of special donations arising throughout the morning, one of three locations around Northland, helping to raise a total of

around $80,000. Chairman of Northland Emergency Services Trust, Paul Ahlers, was once again very impressed at the positivity in Dargaville. “I’m always blown away by the community spirit here,” he said. continued on page 9 …

Matakohe bridge nears completion The first of the two new bridges on the Matakohe SH12 realignment, Bridge No 1, is rapidly nearing completion and will soon provide access for pavement construction crews.

p Bridge No 2 at Matakohe

“The bridge deck has been poured, and this week the last of the precast edge protection barriers will be placed leaving only anti-graffiti coating and removal of temporary access to fully complete the bridge,” said a contactor’s spokesman. “Forming and fixing Bridge No 2’s deck steel across all six spans is underway and will continue into next year. All going to plan, both bridges will be completed by the end of summer 2019.” Earthworks are continuing at the eastern end of the realignment. Across the length of the project, 2.5km of roadway is to be built-up with pavement construction, and this is well underway at the western end. “We continue to cut limestone from the local quarry and the seam at the eastern end. There is a lot happening, and this means there is more large

equipment on-site and truck movements on the existing state highway. “The realignment crosses the highway in two places, and as we build the new road over summer, we will need to put traffic on different alignments temporarily. There will be speed reductions in place, and there will be sections of unsealed road. “Planning and design to ease the corners of both the current SH12/ Matakohe East Road intersection and the SH12/Ararua Road intersection are nearly finished. “We expect to carry out the works on both these intersections in February– March 2019.” Drone footage of the project is loaded on NZTA’s Matakohe Bridges webpage; nzta.govt.nz/projects/connectingnorthland/matakohe-bridges. ¢

Warrant of Fitness recall The New Zealand Transport Agency has written to all vehicle owners receiving warrants of fitness from a Dargaville garage to recommend they get their vehicles rechecked, with NZTA meeting the cost of reinspection. Dargaville Diesel Specialists has had its licence to issue warrants of fitness suspended indefinitely after it issued a WoF to a vehicle later involved in a fatal crash. William Ball, 65, was a front seat passenger in a car, which lost control and crashed into a ditch on State Highway 12 near Turiwiri, Dargaville. Police found the front seat passenger seatbelt was frayed and failed in the crash. NZTA said Dargaville Diesel Specialists had issued a WoF to the car in December 2017 and admitted it had done so without properly inspecting the vehicle, in particular, the seatbelts.

“However, the NZ Transport Agency’s regulatory regime also failed, and that is unacceptable,” Mr Gammie said. “Last December when the lack of seatbelt checks during WoF inspections was uncovered, the transport agency didn’t take decisive action.” Minister of Transpor t Phil Twyford has announced a review of NZTA compliance files by law firm Meredith Connell and said a tougher enforcement regime was being implemented. NZTA has also engaged Kristy McDonald QC to conduct a full inquiry into the case.

Accident at Paparoa Emergency services attended a fatal crash on SH12 near Paparoa on Sunday, November 25. One person died, and another person was transported to Whangarei Hospital with serious injuries. The two-vehicle crash occurred at about 4.10am, and the Serious Crash Unit is investigating.

Sending love to the lonely A pivotal moment in history u by Jill Dickie

Last Christmas, more than 32,000 messages of love and caring, were delivered by an initiative called Sending Love to people in rest homes around New Zealand. This year the organisation plans to target a much broader group, including the Kaipara and is looking for help. Sending Love was launched in November 2017 by Aucklander Hannah Rodgers and her son Jayden. The scheme collects Christmas cards written by everyday kiwis and distributes them to those who may feel lonely at this time of year. Hannah says the idea came about when she and son Jayden were working through a 100 days of kindness programme at home, and Jayden suggested they write a Christmas Card for someone who might be alone. “We were hoping to get a few cards from the local

community to spread a bit more love, but we were overwhelmed by how many people got involved with making and writing cards,” says Hannah. With the help from volunteers, drop boxes are set up in various locations for interested crafters to anonymously write in a Christmas card to show someone is thinking of them. Anyone wanting to help can visit sendinglove.co.nz, or deliver a written Christmas card to the Dargaville Library before December 14 when they will be collected for distribution. ¢

Hunting dogs repelled u by Jill Dickie

After a successful training session recently at Waipoua Forest, 23 hunting dogs have become repelled by the scent of kiwi, ensuring they will not see them as a potential food source if they become disorientated. The kiwi aversion training was arranged between Kaitiaki Kiwi Waipoua, Tom and Karina Donovan and biodiversity supervisor DOC Kauri Coast, Megan Topia. “Kiwi aversion training does not mean that your dog is suddenly safe around kiwi — it is an extra tool on top of good dog control for dogs that may come into contact with kiwi, such as hunting or farm dogs,” said a spokesperson from Kaitiaki Kiwi. The training is an opportunity to encourage kiwi friendly hunting practices, including having well-trained pig dogs that hunt only pigs, not taking pups in training into kiwi zones, and take all possible action to locate lost dogs. “We provide kauri dieback hygiene packs that have sterigene spray and brushes to give to hunters, and talk about how they can help p Trainer Tom Donovan took hunter Jordyn Paniora and one of his dogs through their kiwi aversion training session at reduce the risk of them Waipoua recently spreading the disease,” said biodiversity supervisor DOC Kauri Coast, For anyone wanting to take part in a Megan Topia. training programme more immediately, Kaitiaki Kiwi runs two free kiwi Taheke Land Care is holding an event aversion training days a year, in May and on Sunday, December 9, at 463 Pataua November, to promote good dog control North Road, Tahere. and hunting practices in and around Contact Ian at 09 434 4217 or kiwi areas. ianpage.forester@gmail.com. ¢

Tane Mahuta given all clear u by Jill Dickie

Te Roroa and the Department of Conservation have confirmed that test results indicate the area in the immediate vicinity of Tane Mahuta is clear of the pathogen which causes kauri dieback disease — although two sites less than 100 metres away have returned positive results. The two sites are no closer to Tane Mahuta than the site confirmed with the disease in June this year and are not publicly accessible. Taoho Patuawa, science and research manager for Te Roroa, says that this information will allow the Te Roroa Mana Whenua Board, in partnership with DOC, to make an informed decision on the future of the Tane Mahuta walkway, and also validates the need for further protection measures to continue within the forest. “I am pleased that no sign of the disease has been detected any closer to Tane Mahuta, but the risk still remains,” says Patuawa. “It is still vital that all visitors to Waipoua respect our wishes to stay on the track and clean their footwear when they enter and leave the forest.” Sue Reed-Thomas, DOC director of the northern North Island, says more will be done to ensure the risk of the disease is managed. “We’ll continue to pour all our energy into restricting the spread

p One of the biggest kauri, Tane Mahuta, appears to be free of kauri dieback disease

of the disease. A five-year pig control programme for Waipoua Forest will be underway shortly to move pigs from where the disease is nearby,” said Reed-Thomas. ¢

This could only happen at the Centre... We would like to thank Nor thpower for their ongoing sponsorship because suppor t like this is what enables the Northpower Native Bird Recovery Centre to keep going each year. We would love to not struggle each year when looking after our native birds. I see where thousands of dollars are found to look after kauri trees, walking tracks, predator control and many other items but who planted the trees in the forest? Well, our native birds did so where is the help for them? We must remember that the native birds were here long before man arrived. Many of the injur y’s that birds sustain are man-made. Humans call it progress but I wonder what the birds call it. Most years I send an invitation to the head people at DOC in Wellington to come and have a look at what the Recovery Centre has been doing for conservation for the past 30 years. I do get the odd reply saying the Minister would love to visit but that never happens.

Contact us about legal services relating to residential or rural property, estates, trusts, wills and asset planning.

Some years ago I was asked to hand rear 12 native pigeon chicks for DOC. This was a project that they were running to introduce the pigeons back on the Three Kings Island. After rearing them for eight months they were taken to the Three Kings for release.

We never received a cent for the work we did and never found out how it all went not even a letter of thanks. The funny part of this was at the start we received two plants in pots that were put in the cages to see if the pigeon would touch them as they were very rare plants (Pennantia baylisiana). The plant is endemic to the Three Kings Island and are complete with a registered number. After the pigeons were taken away, the two plants were still in the aviaries so I took them home and planted them in the bush on our property where they started to look healthy again. Two years on I received a frantic call about these two very rare trees and I was pleased to say they were growing very well. The guy on the phone was thrilled and said they would come and pick them up. He nearly had a fit when I told him I have planted them at my place so they couldn’t be removed. I was asked that when they have seeds could I let them know so they could collect some. Now that should be worth a bob or two for the Centre. This could only happen at the Centre! Recognising long service

u by Jill Dickie

After more than 30 years association with the 1st Dargaville Company of the Girl’s Brigade, local resident Dacia White is being farewelled as her and husband Colin will leave Dargaville permanently. The company acknowledged her years of commitment at their recent awards evening.

From a total of 30 entries received in the recent Anzac Theatre Short Film competition, three talented Kaipara winners emerged to take prizes for their work at a presentation ceremony recently. The cash prizes were given with congratulations by Kaipara mayor Dr Jason Smith. Winner of the School Age Fiction category with a film named Aldulsa, was Nan 6 Productions, Nikolai Puharich, Dargaville, and Platon Malakhov from Kaiwaka won the Open Non-Fiction category with his film Following the Song. A battle ensued between two films for the Open Fiction category, with judges calling equal placing for Creative Calvary, represented by Harley Alexander from Kerikeri for his film Incoming Call, and Laughing Jamaican Productions represented by Dylan Hansen of Dargaville, for the film Lens. The team at Laughing Jamaican Productions have entered and done well since 2012. “Now that p Dylan Hansen represented Laughing Jamaican Productions in accepted a winning prize from mayor all of Northland is included in the Jason Smith Anzac Theatre Short Film event there is more to compete against, and Administrator Joe Simpkin collated there is more variation in the type of the competition entries and ensured films made,” said Dylan. they could be viewed on the big screen, Their film Lens delivered a message and judges Cherry Waldron, David about the excessive use of social media, Mitchell, Kimberley Waugh and Steve and that perhaps other things are more Thrupp, spent hours watching the films important — a different focus to their during their assessments. p Members of the Dargaville team, Joy Martin, Dacia White and Pauline Taylor

Dacia started within the Girl’s Brigade organisation as a six-yearold, completing her girl’s badges and enjoying the comradeship over the years. Her lifelong association saw her awarded with a 30-year service award in 1998, and she has remained until now giving her time, support and accountancy assistance, meaning her total service has been more than 50 years. “She is an inspiration and a good sounding board. Town set for ‘D-day’ fundraiser u by Paul Campbell

Maungaturoto is counting down to ‘dementia day’ on Thursday, November 29 in a major funding drive for the Riverview Rest Home dementia unit, with sights set on building work getting underway in the new year. The 14-bed facility will cost $3.6 million, and with site work costing $654,000 so far, and a bank facility of $1.8 million, the Maungaturoto Community Charitable Trust has set its sights on raising the balance of $900,000. The trust fundraising committee spokesman, Albie Paton is hoping for a total of $500,000 from the wider Kaipara community in donations and debentures, with grants sought for the balance of $400,000. “We have so far raised $250,000, and we hope to boost this figure significantly by Christmas, and this is what ‘D-day’ is all about. “It also stands for Donation day. Kicking things off will be breakfast from 6.30am to 9.00am from our base at St John, and this will be a hearty breakfast, which you can eat at the station for $14 or take away for $10. Great way to start the day and get your family, friends and workmates to come along as well. Local factories and businesses have already committed to supplying their staff with breakfast,” Mr Paton said. “More FM will be there from 7.00am, the primary school kapa haka group

will perform, Carters Monster Raffle tickets will be on sale, and other attractions are underway. “Fundraisers will be easily identifiable by their purple Alzheimer’s shirts, they will gladly answer any questions regarding the building project, and there will be an area for the public to view the building progress.” ¢

Speed the saviour for Ahipara man Cliff Colquhoun is likely to be facing a very arduous rehabilitation if it wasn’t for Kaitaia emergency staff and a mercy dash from Kaitaia to Auckland hospital just a few months ago. The 66 year-old awoke on July 9 with pains in his chest which travelled to his back but brushed the discomfort off as indigestion or heart burn. Cliff’s wife Kathy Hancock wasn’t so sure. “Kathy is a Principal and is regularly doing first aid updates, so she decided to drive me to Kaitaia Hospital to save time waiting for an ambulance to drive to our place at Ahipara,” says Cliff. “I was a put in the hands of a really good nurse - Robbie Williams – and he was a rock star alright. There was no Doctor at A & E at the time so he got straight on the phone to one to make sure he was doing everything right with monitoring me and running tests. “The Doctor was sure I was having a heart attack - and once he’d finished changing the tyre of an elderly motorist on his way to the hospital, because he was concerned the motorist might have a heart attack if left to do it alone - he was at my side and was right on the button with all the right decisions. “My first round of blood tests didn’t show any problems and I was starting to feel better

An anthem for the kumara Local musicians Rust have written songs about all kinds of inspirations, as they put together a rocking repertoire of original compositions. Nevertheless, their latest single is a tribute to what was literally an unsung hero of the New Zealand dinner plate, and a Kaipara icon — the kumara.

It’s not the first high-energy rock song about food, but it may very well be the first about the sweet tuber itself. Recently the four-piece band set up their full stage and instrumental panoply in the middle of one of our region’s fertile kumara fields to really get the feel for the popular veggie. It was all in aid of recording a quirky music video for their ‘kumara’ single, and they chose exactly

The following day the call was made to fly Cliff to Auckland Hospital for urgent surgery.

He left Kaitaia at 12pm, was at Auckland Hospital at 12.55pm and was ready for surgery 20 minutes later. It was unbelievable how fast everything happened, he says. “In a critical situation you can see how important time is to you. It’s really not possible to get to Auckland quicker. It would have possibly taken about the same time to travel across Auckland.”

the right place to do it — Ernie’s famous Kumara Box just south of Dargaville. The impresario of the ‘kiwi spud’ loved the song so much he’s going to use it as an intro track for his popular kumara show from now on. Rust has worked hard to build up a live show that’s full of headnodding, foot stomping rock songs, and this latest addition is no exception. To celebrate the release of their video and the new single, they’re coming to the heart of kumara country on Friday, December 7 for a free concert at the Central Hotel. Come along and enjoy some soulful, upbeat kiwi rock from 8pm to 10pm, and hear the new anthem for our most famous culinary export live ‘in its natural habitat!’

Four stents later (three in one artery alone), the two hour-long procedure was complete and Cliff felt back to normal. “I was awakened and felt like I was an observer rather than having an operation on my heart as the process is done so smoothly. I am a fit, healthy guy so I am on a mission to reduce my medication and reduce the plaque in my arteries. “My message to everyone is to get in and support the Northland Chopper Service because it needs our support and our donations to save that next lucky person,” says Cliff. Cliff believes it was the speed at which he was transported from Whangarei to Auckland Hospital in the Northland Rescue Chopper that was the different between life and death.

Rescue service vehicles were on display from the Fire Service and St John Ambulance, with staff members and volunteers collecting donations from drivers along and around Normanby Street intersections. Members of the public were reportedly donating large amounts and small — some emptying their cars of small change and businesses giving several thousand dollars. Douglas Logging Dargaville held a competition between crews to raise funds to donate, which was topped up to a sizeable amount. “It’s a vital service for the entire community,” said spokesperson Kylie Douglas. NEST

The predominant message arising from the people gathered was how important it is to support the helicopter service. “It gets you where you need to go quickly,” said Matich’s Premier Restaurant owner, Justine Hoggard. “You don’t know how important it is until you need it,” the owner of Wynn Fraser, Allan Gray said. FESTIVE DINING

ADVERTORIAL

A cracker menu The hosts at Paparoa’s Thirsty Tui have got the Christmas decorations up, and their kitchen will be serving up a delicious Christmas menu from December 6. It’s a top way to take the stress out of preparing a big roast — but still, enjoy the festive flavours of the season for dinner! The Christmas specials menu is available for functions — a big bonus at this time of the year — and the Tui’s dining room caters for 26 people, with a set menu available to be tailored to customers’ tastes. Just in time for those long lazy summer evenings and afternoons, the management has brought in got petanque and quoits in the garden bar. For even more fun and games, parties of six or more will have the table dressed with old-fashioned Christmas crackers — some festive bang-bang and the chance to wear a silly paper hat, too! On the Christmas menu, the Thirsty Tui’s chef offers a choice between a traditional lamb dinner with tender premium lamb rump finished in a light gravy, classic new potatoes, minted peas and a cranberry sour cream onion tart. Or duck — delicious confit duck served with creamy caraway cabbage, carrot and a black cherry glaze. For dessert, they’ve evoked the yuletide fare of old England — Eton mess (a traditional pudding

from the school of the same name) with meringue, cream and fresh berries or a traditional Christmas pudding with custard and cream. The Tui’s new summer menu also starts in December, with the return of some of our favourite summer dishes including Mediterranean Lamb Salad with balsamic figs, feta and zucchini ribbons and lemon mint dressing and Southern Fried Chicken served with coleslaw and coffee mayo — perfect with a Mint Julep and warm summer evenings in the garden bar. Back by popular demand is the Prawn Risotto from the Italian dinner held a few weeks ago, as it was so well enjoyed. The Thirsty Tui’s award-winning chef Stephen Harrison trained in France but also spent time working in an Italian restaurant in Brazil, and this Prawn Risotto is one of his signature dishes with the new addition — a drizzle of wonderful lemon olive oil from our local Kaipara suppliers Chapel Olive Oil.

YOUR PROFESSIONALS HOLIDAY HOURS

Plan ahead for a hassle-free season u by Andy Bryenton

It’s been a busy year for all of our local professionals — from those who keep us on the road to those who keep us in good health, and of course, those who keep our homes in top condition. With so much work to do, it’s no surprise that the most valuable thing to any of our hard-working businesspeople is a well-ordered schedule — and with Christmas coming, that goes double! The message from a large proportion of those in the building and auto trades is that 2018 is already wrapping up, as far as major projects are concerned. With only a couple of weeks before suppliers begin to shut down their factories and with imports of vital parts from overseas already a time-

constrained proposal, it’s time to look at those last-minute, vital small tasks, which need to be seen to before the break. As is all too common, Christmas sneaks up on us all. Talk to your local builders, electricians, plumbers and other such tradespeople, and you’ll

Reflecting on a clear choice After 30 years of working in the glazing and construction trades, Glenn Stott has seen all kinds of windows and fitted most of them. From residential homes to the monolithic glass-clad sides of Auckland’s skyscrapers, the dauntless glazier has braved heights, learned skills, worked with aluminium and wood — and is now striking out on his own with a new venture. Aptly titled Glen’s Glass, this is a step into self-reliance after spending the past three decades working with other companies. It comes at a time of growth for the community here in the Kaipara, with building and renovations at an alltime high. The market was calling out for a veteran of the glass trade to bring their skills to the public, and Glen saw his opportunity to answer the call. He’s committed to serving the whole Kaipara with his trusty van — from Opononi to Mangawhai and all points in between. It’s a region he knows well — Glen grew up here, attending Ruawai College as a teen. Having worked in many aspects of the glazier’s trade, Glen is experienced in joinery repairs, glass replacement and upgrades, all the catches, sliders, wheels, and fitments of modern windows and doors, and of course, fixing those unexpected cracks! Glen can take care of repairs via your insurance company, and he’s always happy to provide a free quote for those major job,s so you know that your build or renovation is on time and on budget. You may spot his white van with its blue livery around town as he travels from job to job, making homes weathertight and secure.

Summer holidays, and it’s time to get the 1950s V8 out of the shed, dust off the caravan and pack up the picnic basket, ready for the great Kiwi road-trip. However, if that sounds like too much work, or in these days of compact living you’d prefer to see other people’s V8s and reminisce over what holidays used to be like in the ‘good old days’ — then come and visit the Packard Motor Museum. So how did people celebrate holidays in the past? Come to that, how did holidays come into our way of life? The idea of a summer holiday came from our agricultural heritage. Families often needed children to help with harvesting such as picking fruit or helping with haymaking. The first legislated holiday in New Zealand was July 1938. Workers became entitled to one week paid leave. During the early part of the 20th century, the rise of the motor car liberated families allowing them to travel to destinations well beyond their home town or village. However, with the increase in motor cars, it was the young people who learnt to drive, giving them the freedom to drive where they wanted. A good example is our 1930 Packard two-door coupe with the picnic basket in the rumble seat, and a special side door into the boot compartment to store the golf clubs. The ideal young gentleman’s car! It was after the second world war that the idea of taking a summer holiday took off. Remember the Morris Minor or the

Ford Prefect (yes, those cars are in our museum) stuffed full of the tent and other holiday gear then heading off to the beach? If you want a nostalgic memory, reminisce over our yellow Leyland P76, an Australian produced V8.

Nevertheless, summer isn’t always about the beach, so if you’re looking for another interesting holiday activity this summer, then come on, visit the Packard Motor Museum. Bring the whole family and enjoy a drive down memory lane!

When the chips are down u by Andy Bryenton

Green waste — it’s an inevitable by-product of gardening, and it can be a hassle to dispose of. Even those of us who have a friendly neighbourhood garden bag company to dispose of our clipping and prunings, often wish for a way to stack more in the bag, and for those who dispose of it themselves, it can be a costly and annoying chore to shift. This time of year, with plenty of sun and rain causing riotous growth and the outdoor entertaining season well upon us, the clippings can pile up. Many small garden and block owners will question the need to buy a large petrol powered wood chipper to tackle the leavings from shrubs and bushes. That’s where Stihl’s new range of electric garden shredders come in — a perfect middle ground between the sheer grunt of a big chipper and dealing with prunings manually. The range contains everything from small units able to be shifted with one hand and suitable for disposing of soft clippings from garden beds right through to the big GHE 250s, which effortlessly shreds small branches and whippy bunches of twigs down to size. Outside, they are formed from the same toughened plastics, which Stihl use to craft the casings for chainsaws and brush cutters — easy to keep clean and able to absorb the knocks they’re likely to take around the garden. Inside, a powerful electric motor drives a patented ‘sandwich’ of tough blades, much like an upgraded and strengthened version of the business end of a paper shredder. This series of blades make short work of garden
