p Summer has nearly arrived, which means strawberries are ready for the picking. Children and their parents from the Dargaville Make a Friend Playgroup, spent the morning at The Strawberry Punnet’s patch last week, where they were invited to pick and fill a punnet of strawberries to take home. The local family run business owners, Trent Best and Lynda Wilson, have been a part of the playgroup for the past five years. “Having the children here to pick was a great way of contributing back to the community and it would have hopefully made memories to look back on,” said Lynda.

Construction underway at Matakohe u by Paul Campbell

Site preparation for the construction of two new bridges and three kilometres of highway is now underway at Matakohe in the $26.6 million replacement project for the single lane Hardies and Anderson bridges choke point into Kaipara.

The time to give

With Christmas just around the corner, Ray White Maungaturoto begin their ‘Little Ray of Giving’ …

A project office and equipment park has been established for contractors Fulton Hogan in a house on the existing highway between the single lane bridges, and initial work has included setting up site entrances and sediment controls. “The project team will then start cutting and filling the road corridor to the new design height and build haul

roads to carry construction equipment to the new bridge locations,” said the New Zealand Transport Agency liaison manager Jenny Scott. “By the end of summer, we aim to finish 90% of the bulk earthworks and these will be stabilised using a combination of regrassing, mulching, and granular covers before the winter.”

Bridge piling works over the Matakohe River will appear at the end of summer while construction of the smaller bridge over Parerau Creek will start in late winter next year. The bridge building will involve major crane construction which will be capable of lifting a 33-metre, 50 tonne prefabricated beam into place. continued on page 5 …

It will be conducted by postal vote, using the Single Transferable Voting electoral system, under the provisions of the Local Electoral Act 2001 and the Local Electoral Regulations 2001. The nominations opened last Friday and Kaipara District Council’s democratic services manager, Sean Mahoney, says anyone wishing to stand as a candidate should get their nominations in by noon on Friday, December 22. “We are encouraging anyone who wants to make a difference in the district to stand,” he said. “We need a range of elected members of different ages, ethnicities and backgrounds to ensure our council represents the diversity of our community. “Anyone over the age of 18 can stand for election as long as they are a New

A candidate may submit a photograph and profile statement with their nomination paper for inclusion with the voting documents which will be sent to electors from Friday, January 26. Scrutineers will be appointed on Friday, February 26, the day before the election, and while preliminary results will be available as soon as practicable after the close of voting, the official result will be announced on Wednesday, February 21. New property valuations

u by Joanna Manson

Kaipara owners are set to receive updated property valuations representing a 33.3% increase from the 2014 figures thanks to steady value growth in the region over the last three years. The new rating valuations have been prepared for 14,819 properties by Quotable Value on behalf of the Kaipara District Council. The rating revaluation figures compiled by QV show the total capital value of the 14,819 properties within Kaipara District Council area is now $8.6 billion with the land value of those properties now valued at $5.0 billion. “Kaipara district residential value movements can be broken down into the west, central, and eastern regions,” said QV consultant Thomas Ujdur. “The central Kaipara region has been the standout performer as the market recognised the relative undervalued nature of smaller towns such as Kaiwaka, Maungaturoto, and Paparoa — their price attractiveness compared to Mangawhai and relative proximately to Auckland. “The western region, incorporating Dargaville and Te Kopuru, has experienced consistent but moderate gains until the beginning of 2017 when values increased significantly as the market factored in the undervalued nature of the west relative to the central and eastern areas.

The overall average increase for residential properties from the 2014 valuation level is 47% on capital value and 59% for land value. “Commercial and industrial properties have also seen value increases, with the average value for developed commercial property increasing by 35% since the last rating revaluation in 2014.” The average value for developed industrial property increased by 17%. “It is helpful to remember the effective rating revaluation date of September 1, 2017 has passed and any changes in the market since then won’t be included in the district’s new rating valuations,” said Mr Ujdur. New valuations will be used to assess rates for the year commencing July 1, 2018 and will be posted after November 29, 2017. Owners have an objection close-off date of January, 31 2018. Go to ratingvalues.co.nz or phone 0800 787 284 to request an objection form. For more information: kaipara. govt.nz/OurServices/Rates/QV%20 Valuations?mv_pc=2507 ¢

My family could have lost me — I have four children and a large extended family. So although I know that women are really afraid of coming, I would implore them to do it for themselves and their family. “If there’s anything not quite right, go get it checked out. “With us women we always put ourselves last — we’re serving our family, our community, our churches. Initial works at the realignment location have included geotechnical testing and earthworks will support a short diversion of the state highway to allow the main works to be constructed without delaying vehicles. A new and improved intersection will be built for the Matakohe township and The Kauri Museum, and cycling connections will be provided. Construction of both bridges is expected to be completed at the end of summer in 2019. The three kilometres of new state highway will be under construction as the bridge work is underway. The final touches will include landscaping, sealing and tying the new road into SH12 and then traffic will be permanently diverted onto the new road and bridges.

There will be lookout points through the finished project and an iwi consultant will be on site to look after heritage and ecological matters. Matakohe Creek, Te Mateetetau, is a Department of Conservation reserve. NZTA has enlisted representatives of Te Uri o Hau to monitor all geotechnical investigations and provide cultural input. A shared pathway is also planned for pedestrians and cyclists through the area. The Matakohe bridges carry an average of 1,850 vehicles per day, including approximately 200 heavy vehicles. Economic development unit, Northland Inc, has welcomed the realignment saying the region’s GDP is increasing, while domestic and international visitor traffic is ever increasing. ¢

Join us for a festive Christmas Feast Three sittings, from lunch through to dinner time.

These confirmed cases now bring the number of notifications for the Northland Region to 24 this year — compared with six in 2016 and three in 2015. “Vaccination is the best protection against mumps. If you or your children have not had the recommended two Measles, Mumps and Rubella vaccinations, it is strongly recommended that you get these up to date,” says medical officer of health, Dr Virginia McLaughlin. “Contact your doctor or practice nurse if you are unsure whether you or your family has been vaccinated, and book in vaccination if they haven’t.” Mumps can cause swelling in the glands around the face and can lead to meningitis in about one in 10 people. It is spread through the air by breathing, coughing and sneezing, or through contact with infected saliva. “If you think you have mumps, please exclude from school or work and phone ahead to your GP so that you are not sitting in the waiting room.

Wash your hands and cover your mouth when you cough. You can also contact Healthline on 0800 611 116 for advice from a registered nurse, 24 hours,” said Dr McLaughlin. She also confirmed an increase in notified cases of whooping cough in Northland, with 48 notifications this year. Whooping cough can be a very serious illness for babies and children, especially under 1 year of age. “This gives us an opportunity to check immunisation status for both whooping cough and mumps. By doing this as individuals we can protect those most at risk in our community. Don’t delay — check your immunisation status today!” Mumps Symptoms: pain in the jaw, fever, headache, swelling of the glands around the face. If you have caught mumps, it usually takes between 12 and 25 days before you get sick. You’ll be infectious from one week before the swelling appears until five days after. For questions about vaccination call the Immunisation Advisory Centre on 0800 Immune. ¢

Long Term Plan: Environmental Services Land Management Land management involves promoting sustainable land practices, catchment and resource management at the farm and catchment scale. Many of these activities we are also legislated to do. Land Management is easily one of our biggest and most important areas of work. The priorities are: - Water quality improvement - Soil conservation; soil resource quality, soil health and stability - Catchment management; community interaction from hills to harbour

New initiatives include: - More resources to provide enhanced sustainable land management advice and assistance service - Even stronger focus on sediment control, including stock exclusion and farm soil erosion plans - Increasing the production of trees at the NRC owned poplar nursery - Continuation of applications and therefore securing more Government funding

Northland Regional Council’s Role in Civil Defence Emergency Management NRC contributes to ensuring that the region is prepared for, able to respond to and recover from any significant emergencies that might occur. From natural or human hazards that can cause widespread damage to property and infrastructure and or loss of life in Northland. NRC takes a lead role and works collaboratively with the three district councils and other key stakeholders in the Northland Region including Northland DHB and the Police. Council and stakeholders work hard to ensure that robust plans are in place and to maintain a state of readiness at all times. We learn from other regions e.g. the Edgecumbe flooding and the Havelock North Water contamination. Climate change and the expected increases in extreme weather events and biosecurity incursions will potentially be the biggest challenges to maintaining resilient communities in the future.

One Year On I have really enjoyed my first year as a NRC Councillor. It has been very interesting as well as stimulating. I have met many great people, learnt a lot and definitely increased my weekend reading rate! 2018 will see the progress of our Regional Plan through the Hearing Committee and any Appeals. Most importantly the 10-year Long Term Plan will be out for consultation early in the new year. There are some big changes being proposed in the Long Term Plan which will concern all Northland ratepayers. It will be important that you take part in the consultation and use the opportunities to have your opinion taken into consideration.

Students market day u by Anna Harding

Students at Dargaville High School are organising a market day and they want to give all their proceeds to one lucky local charity. This is the first market day the school’s had, with the idea coming from principal Michael Houghton. A keen group of year nine and ten students have come together to make it happen. “We are the media team. We’re setting it up and putting up posters so everyone knows it’s going on,” said student Aiden Watson. Each form class will have their own stall and there are 20 classes. “We wanted to do this to raise money for local charities. “So the form class that raises the most gets to choose the charity to put all the money towards,” said student Flynn Durrant. “There’ll be face painting, Santa photos — including a pony dressed as a reindeer, savoury food, waffles, coffee, christmas cards and bunting, handmade

November 2016 and Nigel was part of the many runners who run and walk the renowned half marathon in one of Northland’s favourite spots. With no memory of the day, he relies on what his friends have told him about what happened. Nigel suffered a cardiac arrest at the 19km mark, and he knows he is lucky to be alive to tell the story. “Luckily the two friends running with me could get me going again. They did CPR and were breathing for me while the ambulance was on its way. Once the ambulance arrived, they gave me a few jolts to get my heart beating again and decided I needed the Northland Rescue Helicopter to get me to hospital really fast,” Nigel says. “I was flown to Whangarei Hospital and within 40 minutes they sent me to Auckland. The Rescue Chopper team had waited at the hospital and flew me to Auckland where I had surgery to place a stent in my heart. Four weeks later, I had a double bypass operation as my arteries were just knackered.” And now the 55-year-old used the same race to take the chance to thank the Northland Rescue Choppers for their help on that fateful day.

Saving the toheroa One is a bacterial infection and the other a condition similar to scuba divers getting the bends. While they don’t know for sure how the health of toheroa will be affected, they suspect the diseases combined with other factors such as storms, poor food quality and overheating could result in die offs. Marine ecologist and study supervisor Dr. Phil Ross said the study “is all about understanding why toheroa haven’t recovered, despite being protected for around 45 years. “We are looking at the history of how they were used, their ecology, what we can do to facilitate their recovery, and how we can work with communities to provide information so they can determine what their aspirations are for restoring toheroa.” For now, they say to help the toheroa people should not collect them and be careful when driving over their beds,

“Even though I am based in Auckland, we have a home in Kerikeri and we are up there all the time. I was just so thankful for them being there to help me on that day last year and so this year, I was running the marathon again and fundraised $3700 for the service,” he says. “People thought I was mad when I woke up after the surgery and said I wanted to run the event again – they probably still do!” Nigel completed the race in 2 hours, 4 minutes and 38 seconds. He says it is good to remind people that the service is there when you need it. “I never expected to need to use the Nor thland Rescue Helicopter, you never think it will be you – but boy, am I thankful they were there. I don’t want to think about what the reality would have been without them. “They are there when you need it and you can’t put a price on that.”

NOTE FOR DRIVERS AROUND STABILISED REPAIRS Between November and March Broadspectrum and KDC will be undertaking sealed pavement repairs in anticipation of the annual reseal programme. The most common means of repairing minor defects is to stabilise the existing pavement. This introduces fresh aggregate into the failure, in addition to a cement stabilising agent to aid in hardening and increase longevity. Due to the nature of this repair, these stabilised patches require significant amounts of drying time in order to meet council specifications for hardness. We kindly ask that you adhere to the posted temporary speed limit whilst traveling through any of these works sites, not only for your safety, but also the safety of our workers.

Council would like to thank you for your co-operation as work is undertaken across the district to improve our communities and infrastructure. Please feel free to contact the Council’s Customer Service Representatives on 0800 727 059 for more information

World cup to small town u by Anna Harding

The Women’s Rugby World Cup visited Kaihu recently, thanks to Kaihu’s Black Fern player Aleisha Nelson. Nurse by day and Black Fern prop by night, she helped our national team win the cup in Ireland in August. Aleisha started playing rugby in Kaihu when she was around three years old, with her dad Peter Nelson as the coach. She went on to high school in Auckland, where she played for a club and her school team. “I didn’t even know there was a Black Ferns team in till I went to Auckland. When I started playing club rugby they had lots of Black Ferns in the team, so from then I wanted to be one.” She made the team in 2012. Aleisha works full time as a nurse, trains around five hours a day and plays a game on Saturday. “I hardly get to see my horses and family up North, so it’s lots of sacrifices. But all the blood sweat and tears are paid off because you’re doing what you love, representing your country and making your family proud.”

Helping our farmers Tangiteroria farmer, Scott Taylor, knows he had a lucky escape not once, but twice – both times needing to call on the services of the Northland Rescue Helicopter for help. Living more than 45 minutes from Whangarei, the prospect of a bumpy ambulance ride by road is not easy with severe injuries, Scott says. p From left to right is Black Fern Eloise Blackwell, Aleisha’s father Peter Nelson, Kaihu Valley Rugby Club life member George Downey and Black Fern Aleisha Pearl Nelson

She advises aspiring young athletes to “train really hard — everything comes

down to how much you want it and how much you’re willing to sacrifice.” ¢

With 2017 drawing to a close, the Dargaville Community Development Board has invited locals to attend a ‘festive and celebratory tipple and talk with a twist,’ to celebrate their current and future initiatives, on Thursday December 14, 6-9pm.

Scott’s first helicopter ride was in 1999 when he was working on his farm, pruning a tree. A large branch fell to the ground, pinning him underneath it. He managed to get out from under the branch, but not before he realised he had sustained serious injuries to his torso. He called 111 and it was decided that the helicopter was the best bet for a quick response to the rural area. “It isn’t a long trip back to Whangarei Hospital, it is quite a short flight but it was so reassuring. To have the chopper arrive and help you like that, you can’t thank them enough,” he says. Five years later, another accident, this time involving heavy machinery, nearly had dire consequences for Scott. “The machinery sliced into my leg above my knee and took out a huge chunk. It was quite serious and extremely painful,” he says. Again, a call to emergency services lead the rescue helicopter heading to the farm once again.

“It was pretty horrific. It was good to see the paramedic and get pain relief. I couldn’t have handled the road trip to Whangarei Hospital, it would have been too much,” he says.

A festive season milestone The time to give u by Anna Harding

The team behind Dargaville’s Christmas in the Gardens is getting ready for the tenth annual show, with plenty of local talent and family fun lined up for Saturday December 2, between 6-8pm.

13

With Christmas just around the corner, Ray White Maungaturoto begin their ‘Little Ray of Giving’ for the fifth year in a row.

p The team at Ray White Maungaturoto are ready to give again this Christmas, said licensee Keith Shadbolt

p The Selwyn Park School Pacifica group entertaining the crowds at last year’s Christmas in the Gardens

“Every year has been a highlight,” said one of the organisers, Marion McEwing. “The biggest thing for me is the local talent and how the whole of Dargaville gets behind it. We have over 1,000 people come every time and it’s always been a really good crowd.” The event is organised by representatives from different churches around Dargaville. Local school children, cultural groups, musicians, singers and dancers will be performing, and old and new Christmas carols will be sung. People are encouraged to bring blankets,

warm clothes and picnic food. There will also be food stalls selling sausage sizzles, ice cream and drinks, with all proceeds going towards putting on the event. “It just a good overall feeling. At the end of the evening you’re just on a buzz.” Christmas in the Gardens is at the Taha Awa Riverside Gardens or in the Dargaville Town Hall on Hokianga Road, if wet. Updates will be advertised on the Christmas in the Gardens Dargaville Facebook page and on Big River FM. Donation on entry. ¢

From Friday, December 1 till Wednesday, December 20, alongside many other offices nationwide, Maungaturoto will have a Christmas tree set up, where the community can bring in gifts, that will be given to children in need. While most offices send their presents to the Ronald McDonald House, Maungaturoto decided to go local. “We have chosen to redistribute the gifts to the community from where they’ve come. So we always partner with local organisations — The Otamatea Community Services, who distribute them to families they know are in need. We like to think that as

a local, if you give a gift, it’s actually going to stay within your community,” said owner Terrence Banks. “We always kick the tree off with gifts, and from there, the community come in and bring in gifts that we can wrap, or something pre-wrapped, while letting us know whether it’s for a boy or girl and which age group. “Christmas is a time of giving and we appreciate that it can be a stressful time for families. We feel that every child in New Zealand deserves to have a Christmas gift to open, and we love being part of that.” The team at Ray White Dargaville are also participating, with their gifts going to the Ronald McDonald house. ¢

PLAN AHEAD FOR THE HOLIDAYS Looking toward a busy year u by Andy Bryenton

It’s been a year of growth and change in the Kaipara region, with a burgeoning population making demands on our local trades professionals across all disciplines. A trend of migration north from the big cities has seen an expansion in the number of renovations and building projects on the go, while the need for support for the agricultural industry has remained strong. This first factor has led to understandably busy times for our local builders and their associated tradespeople. With houses selling fast during 2017, the desire for new owners to stamp their mark — or indeed, to create the perfect retirement lifestyle — has been huge. This means that there have been inevitable wait times for some larger jobs, and bookings for certain

specialised services have already run into the good weather projected for early 2018. Here, as has been experienced all over the nation, we have felt the squeeze caused by a shortage of trained professionals in the building industry. This may have been due to an increase in demand, and not, as in Christchurch, due to a natural disaster, but the need for

world-class builders, plumbers, roofers, electricians and more grew to be an election issue nationwide for a reason. Our locals, already long established and in many cases members of respected professional organisations such as the Certified Builders and Master Builders, have been working as hard as they can, and several tradespeople are doing their part by training a new generation of apprentices. Making this demand in the building trade more acute is the now widespread

knowledge and acceptance of modern regulations by the general public. Gone — and hardly lamented — are the days when major work could be undertaken as a spot of do-it-yourself, or handed over to a mate of a mate without qualifications. In the long term, this will mean longer lifespans for homes, more peace of mind for second or thirdhand buyers, and an end to improperly installed hardware such as califonts and electrical wiring, which, if not done right first time, could lead to disaster.

P L A N A H E A D F O R T H E H O L I DAY S Of course, it’s not just the building trade which has seen an upsurge of demand due to our new residents and a year of buoyant growth. Mechanics, technicians and auto electricians are also busier than usual this time of year, and hasten to advise the public to complete those pre-holiday auto checks now. This could be for the family caravan, boat trailer or the machine that tows them, or it could just be for the old daily driver. In either case, with the clock ticking toward Christmas, it’s better to be early than late. Even a simple WOF can turn into a wait for parts, some of which — considering that New Zealand’s road fleet is on average 13 years old and mainly Japanese — may have to be sourced from overseas. Parts suppliers both here and abroad will be closing down soon for the holidays, so book in quick to ensure safe and breakdownfree holiday motoring. Looking ahead to 2018, those in the trades anticipate another busy year. There’s been little slowdown of the demand for real estate here in the North, despite new regulations designed to put the lid on red-hot city house prices. Those seeking a retirement or seachange lifestyle here with us are more often than not the foreign investors whom new restrictions seek to block. That means it’s best to plan ahead and talk to your local tradespeople soon in order to ensure a place on the books for Summer 2018. It also means new opportunities, with several apprentice positions open now for school leavers across many disciplines — and the opportunity for new businesses to

Currently, many of those helping build the new homes and beach houses there come in from Auckland or Whangarei, but with a larger permanent residency will come the necessity for ongoing support trades such as plumbers, electricians and whiteware appliance technicians to remain in town, on call, in greater numbers. It’s a trend which may well spread across the district as even

THE FLAGS

St John Mangawhai’s youth unit leaders have pledged to participate in the 2018 Rescue Run and raise $5,000 for the emergency service in the process.

THIS SUMMER

The group of six have already began training and have started a Give a Little page to collect donations. Divisional manager Anastasia Tinsel said she thought it was a “brilliant idea” to enter the run. “I’m an ambulance officer so when I saw the run I thought it would be great to bring the youth leaders along as well. By putting ourselves out there we hope to show the younger ones that we’ll give it a go,” said Anastasia. “At the moment we all doing our own training and once the school holidays begin we’ll start looking at rescue scenarios and fine tuning what we’d do in each situation.” The 15km Rescue Run will involve negotiating through disaster simulations such as floods and earthquakes, and even carrying patients at times.

Welcome to Mangawhai Rambling success

u by Joanna Manson

Despite weather forecasts predicting the worst, the annual Mangawhai Garden Ramble took place without a hitch in dry and summer-like conditions raising around $13,000.

p Families enjoy the 2017 garden ramble

“A show of support from ramblers, sponsors and the local business community plus volunteers, has ensured another year of bumper ticket sales and an amazing fundraising effort of more than $13,000 to be shared between Mangawhai Plunket and Mangawhai Kindergar ten,” said coordinator Shelley Pulham. “We had two large Auckland-based

garden clubs attend the event this year, as well as many local and further afield garden clubs and smaller groups visit over the weekend,” Shelley said. She said this kind of support was “invaluable” to the overall success of the Mangawhai Garden Ramble. “It was a fantastic overall result with approximately 400 ticket sales.” Shelley said a lot of work goes on

behind the scenes of the ramble — which despite its expanding popularity and professional programme is all done by volunteers. Over the weekend 18 gardens were showcased to ticket buyers and varied in style, size and location. Next years 2018 garden ramble dates are scheduled for November 17 and 18. ¢

Going ‘plastic-free’ u by Anna Harding

T-shirts promoting a plastic-free Mangawhai are evidence of a growing movement in the town, following Plastic Free Mangawhai’s summer campaign launch. Over 100 locals came to the event, which saw two panel discussions, a new logo revealed and a community summer pledge signing. The first panel was made up of Mangawhai Beach School students. “They were the superstars. They’ve been studying plastic and its impact on the environment, so they spoke about that and ideas of what individuals can do to reduce plastic usage,” said organiser Kate Matheson. The second panel was made up of adults from different areas of the community. “It was really inspiring. The community was really engaged. It seemed like it really energised people to take individual action instead of waiting for businesses to make the moves. “I think there’s a lot of expectation that businesses will step up by making all these bold changes, but actually the community and customers themselves really need to play their part too.” The summer pledge was to refuse straws, plastic bags and single-use

coffee cups, to use a reusable water bottle and to support all family and friends visiting the area to do the same. Kate said people were keen to have plastic-free reminder signs around town and many liked the idea of creating a

criteria for businesses, to become a ‘plastic-free partner’. “The energy, the amount of people that came and the discussion was all really heartening,” said Kate. Visit www.facebook.com/ PlasticFreeMangawhai/ ¢

The field day which is called ‘Food production — yesterday, today and forever’ will look at how farmers contribute towards helping feed the world while farming in a sustainable way and the challenges faced. Owners Bryce and Aneta Lupton will also speak on the day about driving farm profitability through farm enhancement. Facilitator Kathryne Easton said the field day is open to all sheep, beef, deer, dairy and lifestyle farmers, and will include a line-up of speakers, followed by a farm tour in the afternoon. “It’s very topical and we are looking to bridge the urban rural divide somewhat.” The morning speaker session will be held at Marohemo Hall, corner of Marohemo and Whakapirau Roads. The farm is intended to be looked over for the next three years as part of the focus and will continue to hold field days throughout this time. “We are doing poplar and willow eradication work, water quality testing and pest control as three different trials,” said Kathryne. From sea to the land u by Ann Morgan

Graeme ‘Cookie’ Cooksey grew up in Dargaville and served for five years in the navy before moving on to a farming career, and today he looks back from ‘semi-retirement’ as a Kaipara relief-milker. “The navy was a good experience and then I worked on dry stock farms for 15 years. They didn’t pay very well in those days and I had a growing family down in Pouto, so we moved to Kaikohe to work on a Lands and Surveys block, and then to a Maori Trust farm. “At Lands and Survey I was on a horse all day especially during my lambing beat. It was great wandering around on horseback with a dog running beside you. Graeme was into horses and played polo cross, but it became expensive so he secured a job on a horse stud in

• • • • • •

Karaka and was there for nine years. “It was a sheep and beef farm with a thoroughbred horse stud. Before the horses would go to the races, we rode them around the farm for six weeks for fitness. I hadn’t ridden a racehorse before and I asked the owner what the first horse I rode had achieved. It was the Wrightsons’ three-year-old filly of the year, which was a bit daunting. “I spent the rest of the day looking around the paddock for rabbit holes so I didn’t injure it. That horse won another cup and many more races — it was worth half a million dollars.

p Graeme Cooksey checks the herd on a Matakohe property where he is relief milking

Graeme eventually decided to try dairy farming and moved to Te Awamutu and then Putarurua. “Later in life I decided to bring the caravan to Pahi Holiday Park and work in the area as my mum is still in Dargaville. Unfortunately my wife died so I finished the season and started relief milking. “Relief milking is good because you milk the cows and go home. It gives you

a bit of pocket money and stops you sitting around doing nothing. “It is important to be reliable and have an understanding of farm management and be useful to the farmers so they can rely on you when they need time out. “If you haven’t milked before, find someone to teach you — it is a good stepping stone into the industry. If you are good you can get plenty of work.” ¢
