Representatives from the Lions Club, the Justices of the Peace Association, Te Korowai o Ihu Karaiti Haahi (church), Man Up and Legacy, and the Kaipara Lifestyler met with Kaipara mayor Craig Jepson last Thursday to formulate a plan. They will then seek input from as many other community groups, churches, marae, sporting clubs, charities and businesses as possible. “I am passionate about it because there are many broken and lost families doing it hard. There is not enough love in the world. The government, the world and everything is changing, but love remains the same,” said Te Korowai o Ihu Karaiti pastor Petrina Sullivan. “We are doing it to reach out to the lost and lonely and those who need support during the festive season. This Christmas meal is the fifth time we have done one in Dargaville. It is the first time it has been a combined community event and being held at the Nazarene Church.” The plan is to host a free-of-charge Christmas day buffet for anyone who, due to their circumstances, may not otherwise be able to enjoy a big holiday feast with all the trimmings. It could cater to those in economic distress due to the cost of living crisis, those with relatives far away from home or senior people who might not ordinarily prepare a large festive roast just for themselves. “It’s not about me or any of our organisations, as much as it is about doing something for the community. There is real hardship out there,” said Mr Jepson. “Loneliness and isolation are also

big factors facing society, and this gives us as a community a big day to connect with our neighbours.” He says he is happy to come to Dargaville on Christmas day to serve his fellow citizens, and others at this initial meeting pledged to do the same. The plan is to host an all-inclusive Christmas lunch on December 25, with the Nazarene Church Hall in Dargaville as a venue. To make it happen, and to feed the hundreds of guests that the working group plans to accommodate, an outreach is being made to businesses and other community-spirited groups to donate resources, skills or food. Other groups will be gratefully welcomed if they would like to help coordinate the Kaipara Community Christmas, attend future meetings and help grow the event. Others may wish to donate things needed to make the day a success. These include foodstuffs, barbecues, serving

equipment, tablecloths and trestle tables, chairs, soft drinks and sweets. Festive decorations, entertainment for children and families attending, and even new, wrapped toys or books for youngsters who may otherwise not receive a Christmas present were also discussed. Right now, the event is in its planning stages, with only weeks to go. It will take a community effort to make this happen, say those who planted the seed of this idea. All were confident that Dargaville and Kaipara had the heart to make it happen. If you can offer support for this free community event, please email kaiparachristmas@gmail.com and get involved. Equally, if you or your family would like to attend, and share in the community gathering to make your Christmas brighter, please RSVP so the organisers can ensure that everyone is catered to. ¢

Mangawhai park plan calls for feedback

Prestigious milestone met

u by Andy Bryenton

u by Amy Fifita

There are big upgrades on paper for the Mangawhai Community Park before any work commences, the public will have its say before any work commences, with a master plan set for release in December.

The First Dargaville Girls’ Brigade has been celebrating Bethany Godfrey’s and Monica Davidson’s achievement for completing their Brigadier Brooch.

p Mangawhai Community Park already boasts top facilities, such as an Olympic-level skate park; now, the public will have its say on more improvements

“The revised master plan is now at a completed state,” said Kaipara District Council infrastructure strategic planner Mark Schreurs. “However, before it is adopted for implementation, it is required that the community be given the opportunity to review the plan and make written objections and comments on its content, including the opportunity for hearings. The master plan replaces an earlier document, now a decade old, and calls for the formal protection of some natural and cultural taonga, such as mature oldgrowth pōhutukawa trees and the site of the home of local historical figure George Merz. There’s also a focus on growth, with new tracks planned to link parts of the park, a big expansion for the historic village on-site, a permanent cafe area for the MAZ activity zone and skate

park, and a chopper landing pad for the NEST helicopter. Additionally, this document provides a hint as to the desired location for a proposed library and community hub in Mangawhai. A project that will be planned and consented using recent Three Waters-related Better Off funding. It is to be situated in the area just below the Mangawhai Club, between that edifice and the firehouse. There is a wealth of finer detail in the draft master plan, including ideas such as a vintage machinery display, new car parking options, restoration of wetlands, a dog exercise park, and a model boating lake in honour of George Merz, who was famous for his maritime models during the 1940s. The plan is likely to go up for public consideration this December. ¢

Gumboot Friday a hit The second Gumboot Friday Sossie Slammer held recently at the Paparoa showgrounds proved to be a massive hit with locals. The event, organised by Maungatūroto resident Jessica Brennan, raised funds for youth mental health advocate Mike King’s Key to Life Trust to support at-risk young people. Stalls, bouncy castles, face painting, children’s games and activities, plus a mini Mack truck providing rides were all part of the fun. Brian Baker entertained event-goers, while the Rapid Relief Team, Central Kaipara IMB Rugby and other food providers were hard at work feeding patrons. Harding Park traffic flow questions

After extensive reporting and consultation, traffic plans for Harding Park come down to the same choice which has faced its custodians since the 1980s.

The Whānau Focus Centre in Dargaville is seeking to continue a successful programme which has been part of its offering for more than a decade — the team needs local volunteers to help.

p Garry Clarke (second from right) is part of the Tuarangi Road Band that will be celebrating with the whole town at the Mangawhai Sungroove Fest

“We were talking about a Christmas function for us as a team, and our manager John Davy suggested that Garry Clarke and his band, the Tuarangi Road Band, could play at our get-together,” said organiser Shelley Boyed. The Tuarangi Road Band plays rock and roll era music, 60s, 70s and other tunes. From there, the plan developed even further to include more than just the realty company staff. “Garry suggested that we hold a Christmas event for the whole of Mangawhai with the band playing at the tavern. We all thought it was an excellent

idea. It then evolved into a way of giving back to our community and to show how much they are all valued.” The extravaganza will fundraise for 15 local groups that provide townspeople with sporting activities, education, animal care, environmental work and community services. All proceeds from ticket sales will go to the groups, and there will also be auctions and raffles on the night, with the funds raised split between them. Mo bros face tough challenge

A group of Movember-supporting ‘mo bros’ have stepped up to tackle a gruelling challenge in the name of men’s health, raising more than $1,500 for charity.

Dogs attacking kiwi in the Trounson Park area are in the crosshairs of the Department of Conservation and Te Roroa following a spike in sightings of roaming animals.

Kaipara fishing king to be crowned again u by Andy Bryenton

It’s been 35 years of sun, sea, triumph and tall fishing tales about the ‘ones that didn’t get away’ as the legendary King of the Kaipara contest celebrates a milestone birthday. The big day out for anglers originated back in the 1980s, and since that time, it has been organised by Nola Sports, Dargaville’s hot spot for fishing gear and advice. The waters of the Kaipara Harbour have delivered some stunning catches during that period of time, and it’s anticipated that 2023 will be another excellent year across all five species waiting to be hooked. In the competition’s history, beach anglers have won every single category across all five fish species, and this year, the afternoon tide will be to their advantage, too. These are all fish the harbour is famous for, and they not just an excellent trophy to win the crown but a delicious dinner afterwards. Anglers will be going after the biggest snapper, kahawai, trevally, gurnard and the mighty kingfish, in a bid to win not just the title but also a share in the King of the Kaipara’s very respectable prizes. These are not only limited to a first, second and third prize for the heaviest specimen fish; there are also great spot prizes and lucky ticket draws to spice up the weigh-in. This year, there’s a ‘three

hooks’ rule in play, meaning that aerial fishing drones are also in the running. The King of the Kaipara has delivered more than three decades of great fishing not only because of the big catches lurking beneath the waves out there, waiting for a skilfully cast hook. It’s also a showcase of the beauty of the Poutō Peninsula, and, as is traditional, the backdrop for 2023’s contest will once again be picturesque Kellys Bay. It’s an early start on December 9, with boats in the water and rods and reels at the ready by 6am, just in time for a classic Kaipara sunrise. The action will be hot on the beach and of the harbour all through the day, with the official end to fishing called at 4pm and weigh-in running until 5pm. It’s then that the p Bronson Wrathall with his winning 18.19kg kingfish, which tipped the scales to win the top prize at the winning fish will be measured and 2022 King of the Kaipara fishing contest celebrated, with the 35th King of the Kaipara crowned. fishing, it’s time to get involved now. Call of the kingfish u by Andy Bryenton

It’s called the haku in te reo Māori and the hiramasa in Japan, but anglers commonly know this ferocious, coveted species as the kingfish. Competitors in this December’s King of the Kaipara fishing contest will be keen to seek these big, yellow-tailed monsters when angling opens at 6am on December 9. That’s due to their reputation and their size. Last year’s biggest ‘kingi’ at the King of the Kaipara weighed more than 18kg. Kingfish are a challenge and a treat for many anglers, who relish the chance to test their mettle against this powerful species. The reward is well worth the fight that these fish can put up, using their streamlined bodies and fins to really test both a fisher’s rod and reel, and their muscles. An exceptional ‘kingi’ might measure a metre in length, and some have tipped the scales at more than 45kg real monsters of the deep. Famous early fishing adventurer Zane Grey took a real liking to the kingfish, and plied the Bay of Islands for great catches, including a one-time world record specimen weighing 50.3kg. Local legend says a chase for kingfish led to the first marlin catch by a sporting angler in those waters, when Major AD Campbell tried to live-bait a yellowtail and ended

up attracting bigger prey. Over the years, anglers have come to recognise a lot of the traits of this ocean predator. Kingfish live exclusively in southern waters, which was part of the allure for British and American fishing adventurers in those early days. Now, those familiar with the sea will detect the presence of kingfish by the frantic ‘working up’ of smaller bait fish, as the big carnivorous kingfish harry them from below. Scientists say kingfish move in schools when they are young and become bigger and more solitary as they age. Their love for a meal of mullet and piper makes the Kaipara Harbour a smorgasbord for this species, and the reputation of the p Schooling kingfish pursue smaller prey and baitfish, providing a tempting target for anglers harbour for concealing really monstrous examples is strong. Seasoned However, all are adamant that a healthy Who will be crowned king of kingfish, anglers will all have their tricks and tips on respect for the sheer power of this fish the King of the Kaipara? Chilli maple smoked snapper u by Andy Bryenton

If you’re headed out fishing, the thrill of a big catch is just part of the fun. The trend toward charcoal barbecues with offset or built-in smokers means that more folks than ever before now have access to the means to smoke a tasty fillet or two. This recipe provides a fresh taste sensation based on New Zealand’s favourite fish, the snapper. First, cut large, skin-on fillets from your catch. Then stoke up the grill, preparing an even temperature of approximately 115 degrees, ready for the aromatic flavour of manuka smoking chips. As the charcoal settles into a nice, even heat, it’s time to brine the fish. Prepare a mixture of salt and water which is salty enough to float a fresh egg; that’s how you know it’s just right. About 350 grams of salt for two litres of water is spot on. Brining should last approximately one hour. As the fish brines, it’s time to make up a rub. This dish uses two tablespoons of olive oil, two of real maple syrup, and one tablespoon each of brown sugar, ground black pepper, and garlic. Add in a pinch or two of chilli flakes to your particular tastes, and match this with a similar amount of smoked paprika. Rub this into

the fish well, then oil up the skin side of the fillets and place them on the smoking racks, ready to go into the grill. At 115 degrees, hearty, thick fillets of snapper should take roughly one and onequarter hours to be cooked through and suffused with a delicious flavour of smoke, maple and chilli. To serve, whip a 500 gram pot of sour cream with a tablespoon of maple syrup, one of garlic, and another sprinkling of chilli and paprika. It makes an excellent dipping sauce for the fish, which should be plated up with chunky lemon slices and accompanied by a light summer salad. A pale ale craft beer makes the perfect accompaniment. While this example uses snapper, many of the more traditional ‘smoking’ fishes will benefit from the sweet and hot flavours of the rub used here. Alternatively, you can use the method of preparing the chilli and maple rub to mix in with well-broken up and deboned presmoked fish, forming the basis for a zesty fish pie, either in traditional flaky pastry parcels or presented with a top made of garlic and butter kumara mash. ¢

FARMING

Unravelling the red tape u by Amy Fifita

With a coalition government finally formed, Federated Farmers is looking forward to working with them in hopes that they will make good on its agricultural plans. “The new government has set out a clear and credible plan to get farming back on track and restore farmers’ confidence. The last six years have been incredibly challenging for farmers and rural communities with a lot of impractical and expensive regulations. Farmer confidence is at record lows,” said Federated Farmers president Wayne Langford. Before the election, Federated Farmers released 12 policy priorities for the incoming government with a roadmap of how that would benefit the agricultural sector. It hopes to restore farming positivity and set the industry back on track. “The politicians have clearly sat up and taken notice because the new government have comprehensively adopted those policy priorities as their own. The ute tax will be gone by Christmas, water storage is on the way, and there is a real intent to cut through the red tape that farmers have been wrapped up in.” The current freshwater rules are also a focus, and Feds is confident the government remains committed to replacing them with something that will work practically. “New Zealanders have put their trust in us. In return, we trust them. We believe in this country and are ambitious for it.

We know that, with the right leadership, the right policies and direction, together New Zealanders can make this an even better country,” said prime minister Christopher Luxon. National party member Todd McClay is the Minister of Agriculture supported by associates Nicola Griggs from National, ACT’s Andrew Hoggard and NZ First’s Mark Patterson. It marks the first time in 27 years that ACT has had members in cabinet. David Seymour is taking up the newly made position of Minister of Regulation. Seymour has said he wanted to reduce the stress on farmers. The new role replaces the National Party’s approach of removing two farming regulations for every new one. It also broadens the scope of regulatory review across the board. “I want to reduce the regulatory burden on farmers by ceasing the implementation of Significant Natural Areas and replacing the National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management to rebalance Te Mana o te Wai to better reflect the interests of all water users,” said Mr Seymour. Mr Seymour also said he wants to maintain a split-gas approach to methane and carbon dioxide until 2050 and review

the methane science and targets in 2024. There is also a focus on improving the costeffectiveness and pragmatism of Farm Environment Plans. It will allow farmers and landowners to offset sequestration against on-farm emissions. “There will also be a review of the highly political and unscientific methane

reduction targets in the Zero Carbon Act to ensure New Zealand is taking a warming approach. All of these things will go a long way when it comes to restoring farmer confidence. Federated Farmers look forward to working with the new government to make sure they deliver,” Mr Langford said. ¢

FARMING

Making waves for mental wellbeing u by Andy Bryenton

A major award for supporting farmers has highlighted the good work of volunteers, who are taking to the waves to boost rural mental health in New Zealand. The Beef+Lamb Awards is a prestigious showcase for the industry and is renowned for picking out the top producers in this agriculture sector. However, there is more to farming than the products that make it to international plates; the rural champion award offers recognition for those making a difference at a fundamental level. This year, the winner was Surfing for Farmers. This organisation has a significant positive impact on the mental wellbeing of rural New Zealand, including a branch on the Kaipara east coast. Judges said Surfing for Farmers was novel, enabled connection and had a high impact on supporting farmers’ wellbeing. The volunteer-run programme spans 27 locations around New Zealand. It has hosted more than 4,000 farmers, getting them out amid the waves for some very healthy rest and recreation time. There are 590 instructors involved, bringing the programme to a beach near you. “We are chuffed to be awarded the rural champion at the Beef and Lamb awards last night. We can’t win these awards without the help of all our volunteers, sponsors and farmers that come along. A massive thanks to everyone who helps keep this wheel turning,” said Surfing for Farmers chairperson Stephen Thompson. It’s not the first award won by this smart concept, brought to fruition by dedicated volunteers. As many surfers will tell you, the sport can be a meditative and relaxing experience, combining the positive mental health benefits of exercise with reconnection to nature. “When I started SFF, it was apparent there was a need for something to help farmers and growers get off the farm

But he was keen on cuppatees time, an he an’ Sharlene were lookin’ atta papa froma kattilstop atta road gate. “Looky deah,” sed Sharlene, an’ she read in her skoolteacher voice. “The coalition agreement will replace the Resource Management Act with new laws premised on the enjoyment of property rights, replace fuel excise taxes with electronic road user charging and replace the national policy statement for freshwater management.” Boss was poring more cuppatees, an’ he said he reckined the guvmint “might hav hita nail ona head.” (I looked at his head, readas but it seemed OK, so I waited ter see wot he ment.) Then Boss sed he ment the guvmint was gonna “reintroduce offshore oil and gas exploration.” Sharlene sed she agreed, too. “My cousin took part in a survey for oil and gas and they found there’s 54,000sqkm of previously unexplored ocean off the northwest coast of the North Island called the Northland and Reinga basins.” “There ya go deah. That could mean heeps of new munny from the exploration lot for the Kaipra,” Boss said. “Munny to fix our roads too.”

Sharlene pushed sum buttins on her sell phone and red sum more: ”When the previous government stopped exploration experts estimated a cost to New Zealand of $7.9 billion in lost tax revenue.” “Well, tell yer wot then, sumone betta tell that Mr Luxon ’bout that,” seda Boss. “That’s gonna pay heaps more than his idea of a tax on overseas house buyers wot was scuppered. So, we oughta get that tax relief he promisst.” Sharlene was still playing with buttins ona sell phone and said wot she liked was Winnie Peters changing sum names of stuff. Then she red sum more: “He said the majority of New Zealanders want Waka Kotahi [NZ Transport Agency], this so-called boat on the road, to actually fix the potholes up. “How can you have a waka on the road?” he said. “It should go back to using an English name. National and NZ First said the public was confused by the amount of te reo in use.” “Yep deah,” seda Boss. “And guess wot, they gonna make English an’ official New Zilld language, too. Seems no one thort of that before.” Well readas, seeing I rite me kolum in Inglish, I

reckin that’s good sinse. But I reckin they should also stick ter names like Orklind an’ Gisborne. Then wen Boss an’ me is going away ona stock trip, we no wear we blimmin’ going eh? Things is lookin’ up, I rekin. Cheers — Billy ¢

Farmers asked for feedback on water rules u by Andy Bryenton

Farmers have until March 2024 to give their feedback on sweeping new changes regarding water use on farms proposed by the Northland Regional Council. The NRC will attend pastoral and farming events, such as local A&P shows, to promote their proposals for change, culminating in a presence at Northland Field Days in Dargaville. It seeks input from those directly affected by proposed new rules around water use, which they say ‘could mean big changes’ to how the resource is managed across the north. “The more we do, the greater the environmental benefits, but the higher the financial costs,” said NRC councillor and Natural Resources Working Party chair Amy Macdonald. “We need your input to make decisions that will work for our community as well as our waterways.” The proposals include stronger regulations for farmers in the region, including new resource consents for dairy effluent activities and consents to discharge water. There has also been a suggestion of significant stock exclusion setbacks of up to 10 metres from waterways. Additionally, stock exclusion requirements have been posited for highly erodible land with more than a 25-degree slope. More farming activities will also need cultural impact assessments.

p Amy Macdonald, NRC councillor and Natural Resources Working Party chair, encourages farmers to have their say on proposed new water rules

This raft of changes does not stand alone. It is part of a nationwide response by municipal and regional bodies to the government’s controversial National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management. While farmers are being urged to contact

the NRC and have their say about how this will impact their lives and their businesses, advocacy groups in the rural sector are doubling down on their influence with the incoming government by preparing a joint response. Fonterra, Beef + Lamb New Zealand, DairyNZ and Federated Farmers are coordinating to stand united on their suggested changes and potential opposition to facets of the new rules. This same collaborative approach will be taken to address issues with the National Policy Statement for Freshwater Management when parliament is reformed following coalition talks. The feedback received now will inform the NRC’s alteration to its proposal. It could change the way farming progresses in Northland. Water is a key issue and has been highlighted in recent years with debates around Three Waters, Taumata Arowai and the general discourse on overregulation of the rural sector.
