“It is a terrible piece of water and conditions can change in an instant.” Kaipara Harbour Warden under the Harbour Master’s Office, Des Subritsky, has echoed the thoughts of fishermen and boaties across the Kaipara after the tragic outcome of a fishing charter last weekend. Seven men were killed, one was still missing at press time, and three had been rescued after the vessel Francie rolled in heavy seas on the Kaipara bar. All aboard except the Helensville-based skipper Bill McNatty, who also lost his life, were friends from Auckland. “The Hawaiki cable is a core piece of infrastructure which will increase connectivity for New Zealanders, better connecting us to the world and each other, and will help boost our economic growth. “It will also have a positive impact on the Northland economy by making it easier for more businesses to set up there, rather than in the main centres. “As we know, businesses tend to cluster in areas where the Internet is fast and secure and we are already seeing this in New Zealand — everywhere we have rolled out ultrafast broadband we have seen more jobs created.” The cable will come ashore at Mangawhai Heads, with a

landing station built a short distance away at Bream Tail Farm. Ms Adams said Northland has welcomed the project which will be a big enabler of jobs. “I have no doubt that you will see a direct job increase off the back of the landing station being here, as well as a wider impact right through Northland, out into the rural towns and the regional economies. That is why the government has put $2 billion into it.” CEO of Northland Inc, David Wilson, said the cable project is a key infrastructure project for the region and the opportunity to strengthen and diversify the economy.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR This year there will be no Kaipara Vintage Machinery tractors in the Christmas parade. Why not? Because of bureaucracy PC gone mad. As we understand it, the Lions Club runs the parade. They apply to the council for a permit to close off streets. The council charges a fee and Road Safety is involved, including personnel and lots of cones, at great cost. We have been told that all vehicles in the parade must be registered, warranted and insured. The cost to register our tractors for one day to drive around in a closed off area is ridiculous. Effectively, the history of Dargaville that our vintage machinery represents, is prohibited. Other New Zealand Vintage Clubs tell us they parade through their

main streets without problems. We have actually taken part in a Paparoa parade where the thru traffic joined their parade in good spirits. All great fun. Some are escorted by their traffic officers, at no cost. Otorohanga doesn’t have a problem. So what’s so special about Dargaville? Hopefully the new council can take a broader view and allow some of our history to be viewed in a Christmas Parade. Otherwise — come up to Harding Park and see our restored tractors and vintage machinery on our open days, Wednesdays and Saturdays. It’s well worth the $10 entrance fee, as lots of overseas visitors will tell you. M Ross, Secretary, Kaipara Vintage Machinery Club.

Verbal response from the Kaipara District Council spokesperson. “The concern from the Kaipara Vintage Machinery Club maybe to do with bringing the vehicles down from Harding Park which would be along the State Highway and therefore, they would need to comply with VTNZ regulations.

“The route for the Christmas parade is only on Victoria Street and the application for the traffic management plan to host the parade has been approved by the council without restriction,” said acting communications manager Peter Marshall.

Thankful for facilities Festivities in Maungaturoto u by Ann Morgan

The township of Maungaturoto is going to be busy in the month of December as the community come together with different events celebrating the festive season.

p Nothing is taken for granted at the Pununga Meesi ‘Nest of Mercy’ Playgroup at Selwyn Park Primary School who recently had new kitchen facilities installed in their building. Dargaville Methodist Minister Reverend Kuli Fisi’iahi, his wife Luseane, Freemasons Northland District Grand Master Kevin Burch, Reverend Rex Nathan, his wife Ihapera, a Ministry of Education representative and playgroup families gathered to bless the facilities and to recognise the contributions made. The initial funds for the project were donated by the Freemasons Potter Trust.

A LITTLE BIT OF KINDNESS GOES A LONG WAY Council is looking to support the good work undertaken by our Communities by sprinkling a little bit of Christmas spirit. In order to do this, we are asking for your generosity in supporting us. We are after gifts and/or food to distribute in the Kaipara. Presents, tins of food and the like can make a difference to a family in need. Last year your support went to Kaipara Abuse Prevention. This year we intend to distribute all goods received to local churches If you are keen to participate, we kindly ask that any gifts or food is at Council by 9 December.

There is something for everyone and we will have spot prizes and giveaways. This market will be very festive with Christmas music and decorations around the place.” On Friday 9 is the Christmas shopping extravaganza in the main street of the village. “The shops will be open until 7pm and there will be in-store specials and giveaways. “We want to encourage everyone to buy and support local this Christmas season. Enjoying the trade u by Ann Morgan

Northland Kenpo Karate has received high praise during a visit from Kenpo Master Graham Lelliott from California.

“When visiting us in Northland, he was openly impressed with the standard of knowledge and technique here. This of course was good to hear for the team that works so hard to bring it all together. He also commented that it compared with and was up there with anything he has seen anywhere else in the world,” said Northland Kenpo founder Ron Mason. “The attendees at these events were unanimous in their enjoyment of the same, and the experience of having an international master visiting us is always broadening to our Kenpo story.” Mr Lelliott began his Australian and New Zealand tour with the Northland training sites in Dargaville and Whangarei, and stayed with Northland Kenpo founder Ron Mason and his wife Gail. Master Lelliott has a very

close association with many schools internationally and holds a Kenpo Camp in California every two years, with senior visiting instructors from many Kenpo karate schools around the world, offering instruction from beginner to very advanced techniques. He also runs a large school of his own in Fresno, California where he can be found when not travelling and teaching. The Northland Kenpo club members were also pleased to learn one of their students, Croyden Weight, was awarded an ASB Sports award for Kenpo at the recent Kaipara Sports Awards. “Croydon is a very dedicated and conscientious student of our school,” Ron said. Small details, big reward Regardless of your fishing experience, having good quality gear and a basic understanding of the tides can go a long way. On west coast harbours such as the Kaipara, small tides are best to fish on as the currents aren’t as strong and you have more of a chance to get the bait to the bottom. When it comes to bait, fresh is always best and remember to tailor the size of your bait to the size of the fish you are hoping to catch. Leave the barb of the hook exposed as this is what catches the fish. Many people make the mistake of trying to disguise the hook thinking the fish won’t bite down if they see a sharp hook, however this usually means the fish can nibble around the hook and escape without getting caught. Popular baits are pilchards, bonito squid and trevally. Squid is another popular option and easily obtainable. Again the fresher the better. You can tell if squid is old by checking the colour and the smell. If it’s a dark grey or purple or has a strong smell, it is old. Squid tends to stay on the hook nicely due to its rubbery texture. Smaller fish have a harder time picking it off and whilst they are trying to nibble at it, larger fish will be attracted to your line. Sinkers are another small detail that can make a big difference. Most sinkers

in New Zealand are made of lead and are easily found in many sports, hunting and fishing stores. A flat sided sinker sits on the sea bed steadily and will hold a line in position where as a torpedo sinker can assist with getting more distance from your cast. When choosing a hook, target the right one for the species and think about the bait presentation on the hook. Always leave the tip exposed and keep in mind it is very difficult to catch a small fish on a big hook, but it is possible to catch a big fish on a small hook. With the right equipment and a little forward thinking, you can increase your chances of landing a big one and having a successful day out on the water. ¢

Getting out past the breakers u by Andy Bryenton

Since the dawn of time, when mankind first went after the elusive ‘big one’, the goal of getting a baited hook out into deep water has driven technological development. There are those who even say that early man’s hunger for fish was behind the development of the boat, and hence the dawn of trade and exploration. That was all over 30,000 years ago — the age of the oldest fish hook we’ve dug up — but today there are ample options for getting that tasty bait over the breakers and into trophy territory. First among them is the tried and true surfcaster, a kind of rod which has received a real sting in the tail recently with the development of nanotechnology.

This new materials tech has enabled the tip of some advanced rods to enact a whip-like motion, meaning longer casting distances. British angler Danny Moeskops holds the record for longest official cast, at a staggering 278 metres, thanks to this kind of science. Fishing kites have come a long way, since the inhabitants of Tobi Island

invented the concept with coconut fibre and palm leaves. Today’s fishing kites are made of modern materials and can be retrieved with an electric winch. Some even pack a camera looking down toward the catch zone, alerting those on shore that there’s been a strike. Taking the place of the kite for those at the cutting edge of tech is the new practice of drone fishing — taking a baited hook out to sea as the payload of a multi-rotor, remote controlled aircraft. The science designed to deliver missiles direct to enemy

strongholds has been harnessed to target big fish for big results. Of course, the big item on many beach anglers’ Christmas lists this year will still be the tried and true method of guaranteeing a fish dinner — the kontiki. Examples such as the Predator by Waltex pack a powerful motor and a sleek hull to slice through the waves, running a line out to where the big fish lurk. Refined over the years into an angler’s weapon of choice, the kontiki is a tool those ancient Okinawan fishermen could only have dreamed of! ¢

Wool export receipts are expected to decrease by 12 per cent for 2016–17. This reflects overall softer demand, with volumes shipped similar to the previous season. For 2016–17, the overall annual average auction wool price is forecast to decrease 13 per cent on the previous year. Profit before tax for the All Classes Sheep and Beef Farm for 2016–17 is forecast at $67,000 per farm, down 13 per cent on the previous year. Planning for dairy Farm owners and sharemilkers are now looking ahead to the 2017–18 season, seeking out opportunities
