A newly activated North Kaipara Coastguard radio repeater station above Tinopai proved a lifesaver for Dargaville boating couple, Terry and Thelma Curel, when their boat caught fire off Kelly’s Bay “The repeater station had only been operating for two weeks before the incident at Labour Weekend,” said coastguard radio stalwart, Dorothy Quaife. “It provided vital, clear communications as a rescue operation was mounted.” The Curel’s 30-foot launch caught fire after a gas bottle leak. The couple was able to get aboard a dinghy, suffering slight burns and shock and they were quickly picked up. However, their boat burned to the waterline. “I suddenly had a call from Brian Frost, on the launch Jay Ar, at 12.51, who reported the fire and that the launch Buccaneer had picked up Terry and Thelma,” said Dorothy. “There were about five other boats in the area, and I understand two people aboard one of these were ambulance staff.

As time goes by The popular and talented Kauri Chorus are staging their own show for the first time in their 12-year history. The show, As Time Goes By, is based around songs from musicals and it will be a musical extravaganza for theatre and movie lovers. “We’ve never actually put on our own performance,” says chorus singer, Sharon Hunter. “At the moment, we don’t have a lot going on but we always need a focus, so we decided to do something ourselves and now it’s time to perform.” Kauri Chorus is a group of about 25 members who like to sing, get together regularly to practise, and now they are looking forward to sharing their passion with the community. The chorus often perform at local functions but draw no funding and charge no fee, which has previously made securing the right venue a financial nightmare. This time however, a generous benefactor from the arts fraternity has come forward and offered to pay for venue hire and the group is particularly grateful. The performances are at The Little Theatre, Dargaville, on Saturday, November 12, at 7.30pm and a Sunday matinee at 2.00pm will follow the next day. Tickets are $10 and are available from Lynley’s Lingerie and Linen in Dargaville. There will be also door sales, but it would pay to get your tickets early as seating is strictly limited.

Everybody’s talking ‘bout . . . The new shop in town — Sushi Nara. The sushi bar opened in Dargaville on September 27 and has had a steady stream of patrons through the door ever since. Manager, Joonghyung Jo, says he is happy to be here and the people in Dargaville have been very friendly and kind. Jo, along with his wife, Haejung Ma, and three children moved to New Zealand two years ago and hope to stay here permanently. The move from Korea was largely influenced by New Zealand’s education environment, which he says is far too competitive in his homeland. Fresh, high quality ingredients is the key to making excellent sushi, says Jo, and the salmon and seafood is never frozen. He also cites their unique sauce recipes and ‘secret’ ingredients as contributing factors. Jo spent six months in Japan in the 1990s and completed a sushi-making course in Korea in 2003. Before moving to Dargaville, he managed a similar sushi shop in Whangarei — Asahi. Heeung An is Jo’s business partner and together they plan to open further sushi cafes in the North, including Kaikohe and Wellsford but Jo will be based in Dargaville. Next year, Jo’s wife is opening an Asian grocery store in Whanagrei, which is currently an untapped market. Haejung Ma has a Masters’ degree in the

Dargaville Christmas Parade 2011 It’s hard to believe but Christmas 2011 is just around the corner and so is Dargaville’s Christmas Parade. The annual procession of fun, colour and entertainment is organised by the Dargaville and Northern Wairoa Lions Clubs and they are currently seeking float registrations. The theme for the December 3 parade is ‘A Christmas Carol’ and organisers hope local

businesses and community groups will once again support the popular celebration. The $500 cash prize for the best float should prove to be an incentive and even the second and third placed floats are awarded $300 and $200 respectively. Entry forms are available from Noel at Moran’s bookshop or Mike at Dargaville BP.

An eye on the skies Council appoint acting CEO Dargaville’s 57 Squadron, Air Training Corps, is on a recruitment drive aimed at young people from Dargaville and the northern Wairoa, starting with an open evening for prospect members. “We’re having an open night at the Dargaville Aero Club on Hoanga Road on Monday, November 14, at 7pm,” said unit commander, Barbara Gillatt. “We are inviting parents and potential cadets, over the age of 12 to come along and see what ATC has to offer, with a taste of how exciting being part of the squadron can be.”

Cadets undertaking training at the shooting range

Dargaville ATC provide a uniform, which is similar to the regular New Zealand Airforce uniform and offer a wide range of activities. The unit’s training programmes include opportunities in leadership and team building. “Our structured programme within an Airforce culture means that cadets will learn about aviation, bushcraft, firearms, safety and marksmanship, and the defence force. They are also able to obtain NZQA credits while they learn and we organise weekend activities to reinforce what is learnt in the lecture room. “After 18 month’s attendance our cadets will also get opportunities for further training on defence force bases in leadership, airforce and outdoor experiences and cadet exchanges. ATC is also a great organisation for young people to develop lifelong skills and friendships so it is an ideal first step for young people who are thinking of a career in the army, navy or airforce.” Cadet, Lesley Thorburn agrees, “All the camps we go on are really good and no matter what I’ve learnt, there is always something new on every camp. I’ve had opportunities through ATC that would never have been available to me anywhere else.” The ATC cadet group meets every Monday night between 6.30 and 9pm and transport can be arranged if required. “If you are interested, you should come along and see if ATC is for you,” adds Barbara.

A major shake-up of Kaipara District Council staff and management is near complete, with long standing CEO, Jack McKerchar, stepping down last Friday. KDC General Manager of Operations, John Burt, has been appointed the acting CEO until the position is filled permanently. John Burt joined council’s senior management team four months ago and says he has found that time enjoyable. The Hakaru resident was attracted to the general manager’s position because it meant he could work within his own district and he volunteered for the position of acting CEO. “I’m looking forward to the role and I think helping the organisation through the transition will be quite a challenge,” says John, adding that he believes the council is fairly close to appointing someone fulltime. “I enjoy a challenge and making a difference within organisations. We have a very strong

SELF DRIVE HIRE

“As far as the council is concerned, it’s business as usual and we will continue to work on many of the problems that have been identified in terms of finance and so forth.” John says he enjoys the community spirit, beaches and lovely environment in the Kaipara and particularly that of Mangawhai which is his service centre. In his spare time, John enjoys keeping fit and doing work around his property. Jack McKercher leaves the KDC after eighteen years’ service and has seen the council through six elections and four mayors.

This is a series of regular articles keeping you informed of happenings on our harbour today, and from bygone days — truly the ‘Jewel of the Kaipara’.

A punt at Maungaturoto by Paul Campbell

Approaching the Kaiwaka River entrance into the Kaipara Harbour

Travel between the towns of the Northern Kaipara and Auckland — to or from Maungaturoto, for instance, is today just a brief hour or so on the highway. But harken back to the settlers who first arrived to create the fledgling township 150 years ago, and it was a different story. Towards the end of November, 1863, a party of settlers arrived at Maungaturoto, via Mangawhai, Kaiwaka and the Wairau River. Among their number were the Flower, Huband and Bailey familes, as well as individuals, Wilson and Marygold, all emigrants from Birmingham. The journey by cutter from Auckland to Mangawhai, and then by bullock cart to the headwaters of the Kaiwaka River and on to Maungaturoto, took two weeks. With roads simply a figment of the early ‘developers’ imagination, the Kaipara waterways were yesterday’s highways. Records at the Albertland Heritage Centre at Wellsford record that the most urgent need after the landing of the party was for household effects and general equipment to be shipped in, as little more than a picnic supply had been brought on this first journey. Many river trips were needed. For these, the settlers had The Punt.

This was a fair-sized craft carrying about three tons, purchased by Messrs Flower and Huband, but comandeered as a general utility boat by the community for cargo purposes in the shallow waters of the upper reaches of the Kaipara Harbour — especially in the days when jetties and landing conveniences were unknown. The settlers history, The Albertlanders, records that ‘the settlers were as new to boats and tides as they were to bush life. On hearing their goods had arrived at Kaiwaka, it was customary to put the mass of timber, tar and black paint, known as The Punt, as far as possible down the creek, in order to get away on the first of the incoming tide, aiming to reach the mouth of the Kaiwaka before the tide turned. ‘It was then generally possible to get to the head of the Kaiwaka, load up the goods, and drift down to the entrance of the Wairau River

on the ebb . . . anchoring to await the return of the tide . . . the increasing ripple of the returning tide would render the trip home comparatively easy. ‘These boating excursions had to be confined to the period about high tides, and in the intervals the settlers were busy opening up the survey tracks, clearing land and putting up shelter for their goods as they came to hand. ‘Horses were not in evidence at Maungaturoto in those days, and the carrying of these goods from the river landing to the various sections must have been a hurculean task — the hardest work on the programme’. This account of Maungaturoto’s early transport concludes with the note that as well as The Punt, there was a fine keelboat owned by Mr Hurndall and a smaller punt owned by Mr Rowsell, that together, ‘constituted the Wairau River fleet at this time’.

Images from Albertland William Harold Marsh, farmer, father, early Albertlander and adventurous photographer captured a time of enchantment, when life was lived at a slower pace and governed by a different set of values, priorities and ambitions.

This landmark commemorative book by Paul Campbell tells the story of the Albertlanders’ arrival and settling of the Kaipara area, and features many of Harold Marsh’s photographs that have been painstakingly restored.

Book Review by Ralph Williams

‘Images of Albertland’ ‘A wonderful book is just that — a wonder’ Simple words from poet extraordinaire, Sam Hunt, at the launch last Sunday at Wellsford, of a stunning book on the opening up of the Northern Kaipara by our early settlers. The book is Images from Albertland, by local author and historian, Paul Campbell, who also produced Child of the Kauri about Matakohe matriarch, Mavis Smith, and Kauri Cameraman, on the exploits of famed photographer, Tudor Collins. Photographs too are the keynote of Images from Albertland. It portrays a Kaipara history through the lens of an old glass-plate camera used to capture more than 7,000 images during the life of former Warehine farmer and family man, Harold Marsh. My partner, Marina, is the daughter of legendary Kaipara fisherman, Ted Pook, who appears in the book. Immersed in its pages, she comments: ”It generates a flood of memories — I can see my mother doing the washing under a puriri tree. The pictures are beautiful — they say it all, exactly as it was.” The Wellsford community centre was packed for the launch occasion, to hear Albertland Museum chairman, Peter Marsh, outline his grandfather’s legacy — now preserved in this book. A huge amount of work has gone into sophisticated restoration of these old photographs, some dating back more than a century. They look now, as they must have when viewed through the lens of Harold Marsh’s camera on the day they were taken. For production value, to my mind, the book is something of a benchmark. It doesn’t get much better than this, in photographic reproduction.

Kayak fishing catches on It’s a sport which is going from strength to strength on our coastal waters — in fact; it’s the fastest growing pastime on or around the ocean! Kayak fishing has ‘hooked’ vast numbers of anglers with its combination of excitement and accessibility, and it’s easy to see why — there is an undeniable thrill in landing the ‘big one’ from such a small vessel, as well as the bonus of some good exercise along the way and a more personal view of our stunning coastal scenery. While international names like Dennis Spike and Jim Sammons have been spreading the word about the sport for years, it’s a local band of kayak fishing enthusiasts who have brought it home to Dargaville and the north. Local man Jason Dassler is the proud owner of Dargaville Kayaks, and also a member of the Northland Kayak Fishing Club, an organisation covering both the east and west coasts of our part of the country. The club exists to encourage the uptake of kayak fishing. Jason himself is always keen to introduce people to the sport of kayak fishing — in fact his knowledge has been sought by local fishing shows in the past when they’ve showcased the sport. With the weather taking a turn for the better and summer on its way, you’ll likely find that he’s out on the water at every opportunity, putting one of his customised Ocean Kayaks through its paces and bringing home a memorable catch.

Albertland Heritage Centre chairman Peter Marsh displaying a copy of Images of Albertland

Top quality art paper makes the pictures come alive, with Paul Campbell’s text bridging the images in a comprehensive account of the life and times of its subjects. Indeed, as Sam Hunt told the packed community centre, as images from the book played on the cinema screen on the stage, it is ‘a wonderful book’. It is a worthy signpost to next Easter’s 150th Albertland Reunion in the wider Kaipara — and surely a must addition to every public and private library in the country.

Garden upgrade at hospital New principal welcomed

Some of the gardens at Dargaville Hospital have been given a much needed ‘spruce up’ thanks to the kindness shown by the Dargaville Quilters’ Club who donated some of their raffle money to the makeover. “A number of comments had been made in regards to the ‘scraggy, untidy gardens’ outside the medical centre,” says Kaipara Community Health Trust CEO, Debbie Evans. “So this is stage one of the garden upgrade but there is still work to be done.” “Northland District Health Board has invested a lot of money into our hospital — particularly upgrading medical equipment, so it is no surprise that the gardens don’t even feature on their budget list.” In typical Dargaville style, the community rallied around to help improve the gardens. After hours, nurses volunteered to do the planting,

landscaper Stephen Soole designed the gardens, Dargaville Carriers transported the plants and LBM Services heavily discounted their supplies. “Together we have created a smart garden that will welcome people in our community every day when they access our wonderful health services based at the Total Health Care Centre,” adds Debbie. Jen Thomas, Dargaville Hospital Operations Manager, added that the gardens are often the first thing that is noticed when people come to the hospital and since the improvements the feedback has been really positive. Jen would once again like to give thanks for the wonderful work done and the funds raised to enhance the hospital grounds If people would like to contribute to the next stage of the upgrade they can contact Debbie Evans KCHT on 09 439 5050.

Robyn Posthumus has been welcomed with a powphiri to her new role as head of Ruawai Primary School With a post graduate degree in gifted education, she was previously principal at Poroti School. “I am looking forward to being part of the school and enjoying being part of a bigger teacher and staff team,” she said. “I am very keen to encourage parents as partners in learning and family involvement. School board chairman, Des Bickers said that with lots of activities coming up, term four will be a busy time for the school, giving the new head a chance to sit back and watch what is happening at the school and get Robyn Posthumus — Ruawai Primary’s new principal ready for the new school year. “We also look forward to improving the transition from kindergarten to primary to college for our students. With her good grip of education, the board looks forward to working with Robyn.”

Rachel a week late Songwriter and performing artist, Rachel Dawick, who was due to perform at Dargaville Town Hall last Thursday, October 27, had to delay her tour due to illness. Fortunately, Rachel is only delaying for one week and will perform in Dargaville on Thursday, November 3, at 3.45pm.

s a result of 48 hours of heavy rain, thousands of acres of land are under water and will be for the next few days as a large amount of hill water has yet to come down. This is the worst flood from rain ever known here. On many of the dairy farms cattle are standing up to their knees in water. Settlers having a little dry land are offering to flooded settlers a small measure of relief by allowing them to herd their stock on to some dry corner for the next few days. On Sunday travellers from Matakohe reported dead cattle in road drains just after coming on to the flats. It is expected that the stop bank a little south of Ruawai will carry away at any moment. The Ruawai School has been closed down until Thursday next.

t a meeting of the Council of the Society held on Monday night at the secretary’s office, considerable correspondence was dealt with and reports received concerning properties suitable for a game farm. Members of the Council were unanimously of the opinion that wild cats were the greatest enemy of game that existed in this district and they hoped that every sportsman would do their best to destroy them.

Rose and Flower Show With so many beautiful flowers back in bloom, Ruawai Garden Club is preparing for their annual Rose and Flower Show. The November 12 event has survived the generations and is a special day for flower lovers and fun for young and old. “The show was excellent last year,” says organiser, Nolene Gatehouse. “We had over 350 entries and it would nice if we had that many or more this year.” The open competition serves beginners, intermediate and experienced gardeners, with different categories in each section. First-timers are encouraged to give it a go or come along for a look on the day and in preparation for next year. “We have trophies for the winner in each section and the more entries people put in, the greater their chance of winning the entire section. For people who have never done anything like this before, we have the novice

section, which beginners can keep entering in until they win the trophy. “For a little town we get a good response and last year we had people from Kaihu, Whangarei and Paparoa. There are not many shows like this anymore.

Dargaville pool re-opens

Dargaville’s community swimming pool has re-opened for the summer season and will operate from 6am weekdays and 12pm on the weekend. The news is particularly favourable considering earlier reports of cracks in the pool’s concrete floor. It is business as usual, says Kauri Coast Community Swimming Pool Trust chairman, Vern Stevens. “Just rock on in and get into it.”

Green-thumbed Hypnotist in fundraiser Mangawhai woman recognised An entrepreneurial Mangawhai gardener has been recognised for setting up a vegetable garden to help young mums feed their children and the generous gesture has earned Joan Farrell a nomination for a gardening magazine’s ‘Gardener of the Year Awards 2011’. Joan says she came up with the idea for the Mangawhai Community Garden four years after a conversation with her daughter. “My daughter went to her child’s kindy Christmas party and came back quite upset. There were so many young people who were so stretched that they couldn’t feed their children properly,” says Joan. Concerned, Joan approached the mayor and was offered an acre of reserve land with existing fruit trees, so she and her friends started tilling, weeding, fencing, building a compost heap, starting a worm farm and propagating seeds. The project was underway and every Friday since, Joan’s been there, working in the garden, co-ordinating the volunteers and making sure everyone has a lemon cordial and a biscuit! “We run on a shoestring,” says Joan. “We never buy plants, we always start from seed. There are no secret recipes, it’s just working together.”

“People are very busy but Mangawhai is magic. This place runs on goodwill.” Produce from the garden is given to health providers who distribute it to people in the region who’ll benefit from it. Silverbeet is the all-time favourite crop, but the garden produces a whole range of fruit and vege. About 15 volunteers regularly help out at Mangawhai Community Garden but there’s no roster; people come and go as they can. Joan is quick to say that the project is a group effort but without her hard work and initiation, it would never have started.

Kaipara Community Health Trust

The Kaiwaka Sports Association complex is holding a fundraiser, which is sure to invite laughs from the whole family. The complex started out as an ambitious project but with community support, it was built in just a little over a year. Comedy hypnotist, Gerard V, is bringing his successful show to Kaiwaka and says he is always happy to help a good cause. The November 12 side-splitting laugh extravaganza will see audience members volunteer themselves for some on-stage antics however, Gerard V says, the show is Gerard V — coming to entertain hilarious but not humiliating. “We figure that by taking our show out on the road we can make the world a better place by filling it with laughter, while helping raise funds for good causes,” says Gerard V. “We use only volunteers from the audience and we treat them like the star they are. Deep down inside everyone there is a natural performer and it’s amazing what people will do on stage.” Tickets available at Jaques Four Square or phone Cheryl Anderson on 09 431 2051.

Happy Birthday Fosters November marks one year of being back in business for Fosters Home Decorating and the year has been bigger, brighter and better than ever. The longstanding, family-owned Dargaville business was devastated by fire in 2009 together with other adjacent buildings that the family owned. Nearly three years later and with a fresh outlook the family say it could have been a blessing in disguise. Their new mall is an attractive, modern addition to the ‘other’ end of Victoria Street, which is fast filling with new and upgraded businesses. “It’s been great seeing our regular customers more often and new customers and getting our Whangarei clientele back again,” says Karen Foster. “This building’s so much easier to work in,” adds Arron Foster. “It’s all one flat level, there are multiple entries and exits and I can back

the delivery truck right up to the loading ramp.

“The lay-out’s great because everything’s in one place whereas before, you’d wear your shoes out walking from one end to the other and upstairs.” “We’ve had awesome comments,” the couple say in unison. Fosters are celebrating their birthday by rewarding customers with some great deals — one of which will benefit the community. A $5,995 Soprano 3+2 seater leather lounge suite has been reduced to $1,995 and all the proceeds will be donated to Northern Wairoa Cricket Association to help pay for a new pitch at Dargaville High School. The specials do not end there though. There is also big discounts on popular brands, freebies, a lucky dip, a draw to win an Ampro socket and tool set, spot prizes and more.

One year on, bigger, brighter and better

“I’d like to thank the public for their support over the last 12 months, it’s really been appreciated,” says Greg Foster. The reinvented Fosters Mall includes a large main shop, which incorporates Fosters home furnishings and Fosters Resene Colour Shop. A covered thoroughfare to Normanby Street divides Fosters with four smaller shops. Two are currently occupied but they hope to fill the remaining shops in the near future.

Maungaturoto renaissance Maungaturoto is the ‘hidden gem’ of the Kaipara, a ‘real New Zealand town’ brimming with things to see and do and steeped in history. In the past few weeks the picturesque little village has undergone somewhat of a renaissance, with new businesses opening, new attractions to see and new flavours to taste. Take a walk down the main street of Maungaturoto and you’ll find far more than you might expect — it’s the perfect destination for a day out this spring. Dive into Dreams for design, decor and gifts. Jan and Mike Schimanski have quite literally made their Dreams into reality in the little town of Maungaturoto. The pair have recently returned from a year’s break to open the new premises of Dreams — a unique and eclectic gift and homewares store in the heart of this ‘real New Zealand town’. Locals and tourists alike will remember the previous incarnation of the popular gift store, made famous by their trademark upside-down gumbooted feet — a roadside attraction to rival Ohakune’s big carrot or Paeroa’s iconic L & P bottle! The yellow-clad legs and big gumboots are back, gracing the roof of a grand old building on Hurndall Street, but inside it’s all change with a refined and tasteful new look adding sophistication and style to Maungaturoto’s main street. The new Dreams is bigger, brighter and more spacious than their old premises in the Four Square building, with the air of a provincial French or Italian villa filled to bursting with fashionable furniture and homewares. Set out like a designer home, Jan’s collection of furniture

Jan Schimanski — turning dreams into reality

and giftwares flow from inside to outside, and the best news is that everything on display is for sale, encompassing goods which would not look out of place in an upmarket Ponsonby boutique. Of Irish descent, Jan has woven strands of the Emerald Isle’s culture into the best of continental Europe and some strong Kiwi influences — Dreams is home to the Blarney Stone of the North, a must see for travellers! Four years in the making, this delightful destination is a must see for visitors to Maungaturoto and locals alike.

Affordable arts 2011 Dargaville’s Affordable Arts is now under a month away, so it is time for artists to complete their work and register a stall. The annual event is organised by the Dargaville Library and provides a great opportunity for artists and art lovers ahead of Christmas. “Some people will be exhibiting for the first time and sometimes they will be A selection of last years’ exhibits the ones that sell the most work. “There will also be the more established artists, and last year we even had some teenagers and hope we get that again. It’s a really good place for networking, as well as a good place to sell some work before Christmas.” Affordable Arts 2011 is open to anyone but aimed at Kaipara residents. Previous events have included paintings, ceramics and pottery, sculptures and wood carving, photography and weaving. The opening evening is Wednesday 23rd November, between 5 and 7.30pm, and will feature live music, nibbles and drinks. The sale of art opens to the public on Thursday, 10am and will be open all day Friday and on Saturday until 1pm. Contact Dargaville Library on 09 439 3150 or email: library@kaipara.govt.nz.

Trail ride for rugby

13

Rugby players are set to benefit from funds raised by the Maungaturoto Country Club Trail Ride which will be held over 80 kilometres across 10 Kaipara farms, through pine forest and native bush, on Saturday, November 26. “The event for motocross and quad bikes, appeals to both experts and novices and is expected to attract about 500 riders,” said Maungaturoto Country Club president, Rex Roadley. The club has two affiliated rugby clubs — JMB and the Otamatea Hawks. “This year money raised from the event will fund improvements to the rugby fields which last year got new floodlights. The club is delighted to be devoting the funds raised to rugby, especially as the All Blacks’ success in the Rugby World Cup is likely to attract more young players to our national sport.”

Join us at NorthTec in 2012

He said many of the riders who flock to this Kaipara trail ride come from as far afield as Whangarei and Auckland, attracted by the location a few kilometres off State Highway One and the 80km track which is twice as long as most trail ride tracks and navigable by riders of all abilities. The course comprises two tracks of similar lengths. Riders can complete one or both. Country Club members Shay Hawken and Brett Coates, who manage the event, say it gives people an unprecedented opportunity to ride on a wide range of terrain. “Big thanks to the farmers who make their properties available to this group of dirt bikers,” said Shay Hawken. “The track challenges skilled riders who push themselves, but suits riders of all abilities and ages, including first-timers and those who’re relatively new to the sport.”

The hot hatch is back! by our motoring correspondent

The small car with big credentials

‘Subcompact’ cars are becoming more and more appealing to the costsavvy motorist, and this rapidly growing sector of the market has led to fierce competition between industry players to create vehicles which box above their diminutive weight and size. Toyota weighed into the subcompact market long before it was even a recognised category, with the peppy and popular little Starlet, and followed up more recently with the eminently practical Echo. While the design and specification gap between these two cars was chiasmic, both embodied a sense of fun as well as providing a practical and inexpensive runabout. Toyota’s famously bulletproof engineering made the Echo especially a fine choice — I have had occasion to travel to Wellington in a 1999 Echo, and found it not just more frugal on petrol but also more comfortable in the long haul than my own larger saloon. Recently Toyota released their latest small car — the 2012 Yaris. And the good news is that it utterly defies the term ‘subcompact’ as a glib description. This is mainly due to its vast interior dimensions, its bold styling and its 1.5 litre engine. But it’s also very much about that aforementioned sense of fun — a blend of sleek stylistic cues and interior accents, balanced suspension and engaged driving feel which places the Yaris above its more ‘entry level’ rivals. In a market sector dominated by price, many of the contenders which the 2012 Yaris is up against have been built to a budget, skimping on soul and substance to satisfy a low bottom line. But this car is made by the engineers of the Hilux, the Corolla and the Land Cruiser, and it shows. With a mere couple of inches more in its

R chassis dimensions from the original Yaris, the 2012 iteration seems far more planted on the road, a fact which is backed up by its impressive safety credentials. And while the 1.3 and 1.5 litre power plants available are not supersonic, they are far from underpowered, giving the Yaris a well-built and confident feel in motorway traffic. As it’s

a Toyota, you can also be sure it will go the distance as well! From its rakishly sculpted new front treatment, to its mono-blade windscreen wipers and all the way through to a neat little cluster of brake lights, the 2012 Yaris is a stand out in its field — pushing the level of quality and reliability up for the entire subcompact class.

Solar power, once seen as an ‘alternative’ energy source, has benefited from recent advances in technology to become a must-have technology for home buyers prudently looking to future energy savings. And there is no aspect of your home’s energy usage which benefits more from this smart new ‘solar revolution’ than hot water heating. Old fashioned electric water heaters can account for up to a third of your entire power bill — a hefty portion of your monthly expenditure. But outside, the roof of your house is exposed to hundreds of thousands of kilowatts of solar energy. The solution — a modern solar hot water system from Dargaville’s Plumbing and Heating Centre from as little as $5082. A slimline set of solar collectors aligned to catch the rooftop sun can provide a steady stream of hot water to your existing cylinder — in many cases there is no need to replace it. Cold water from the mains is circulated through the solar panels or tubes and returns to the insulated cylinder to build up a supply of hot water with no electricity wasted, meaning that there’s always enough to go round! Even at night or during stormy weather your back-up systems (electric, gas, or even a wetback stove) need not work as hard, slashing your energy costs. The proof is in the maths — a home with a $200 monthly power bill can expect savings of around $60 per month or a staggering $720 per year just by going solar.* And even more logically, many modern

solar systems (Plumbing and Heating’s Nova system, for example) pay for themselves through savings in a few short years, with a lifespan of decades. Now standard across Europe, solar hot water heating is the new big initiative for Kiwi homes, helped along by a generous subsidy from the EECA program — up to $1500, as Plumbing and Heating are fully EECA registered and approved suppliers. When you look at the facts and figures, it simply makes better sense to switch to the free, plentiful resource of sunlight rather than relying on costly electricity. If you are curious about your solar options, or want to talk to the local experts in this field then stop in at Plumbing and Heating and let’s get started! For the environment — as well as your bank balance — solar hot water heating really is the brighter choice!
