Interstellar A sci-fi exploration epic brought to the big screen by director Chris Nolan and backed up by the heavyweight mathematics of real-life physicist Kip Thorne. When an interstellar wormhole opens near an environmentally ravaged Earth, a team of explorers gear up to travel through it, in search of a new habitable planet. But for the team’s chief engineer, this dangerous trip may mean never seeing his family again.

The Dead Lands This highly anticipated story follows a young Maori warrior on a path of revenge, questing into the forbidden ‘dead lands’ to seek the aid of a legendary fighter who can help him conquer his enemies. After a rival war party devastates his home and kills his family, he sees this course of war and horror as the only option to redeem his honour. But is vengeance the real answer? Stunningly captured, and produced entirely in te reo Maori (with English Subtitles), this is a must see Kiwi film.

Gone Girl An all star cast spin a web of deceit, treachery, murder and infidelity in this tense thriller. Psychopathic manipulator Amy will stop at nothing to have her revenge on her unfaithful husband Nick - even faking her own death to have him executed for murder! But as he mounts a spirited hunt for the ‘real killer’ and tries to clear his name, the rules of the game change for all involved.

The Judge Big city lawyer Hank Palmer returns to his childhood home where his father, the town’s judge, is suspected of murder. Hank sets out to discover the truth and, along the way, reconnects with his estranged family. ‘Iron Man’ Robert Downey Jr. stars in this gripping murder mystery.

Pride In the darkest days of Margaret Thatcher’s Britain, during the ‘84 miners strike, an unlikely alliance between a group of gay and lesbian activists and an old fashioned Welsh mining town develops, with triumph resulting from this clash and co-operation of cultures. Hip–hoperation For those who think hip hop is just for the young, this movie sets the record straight as a troupe of Kiwi retirees go from the old folks’ home to the Vegas stage as the world’s oldest hip hop dance troupe. Life affirming and fun with a fresh soundtrack.

Boxtrolls

From the creative minds who brought us ‘Coraline’ and ‘Paranorman’ comes a Victorianera tale about an orphan boy trying to find his way in the world. This isn’t Charles Dickens, though this lad was raised by a loveably gruesome family of subterranean trolls. When his adopted clan are threatened by evil pest exterminators, it’s up to him to save the day.

I want items purchased by the community to stay there.” Ms Gummer says the Dargaville Gardens are a fabulous idea for the community.

“The trustees are getting older. They need some younger people. I can bring some fresh ideas and a younger perspective.” Originally from Auckland, Ms Gummer has a background in outdoor adventure activities and in science. Lower speed limits for West Coast beach  by Colin Patterson

Drivers who take their cars on Ripiro Beach this summer will have to slow down after Kaipara District Council commissioners approved lower speed limits for two sections of the beach. The 30km/h limits will apply 1.1km north and south of the entrance at Baylys Beach and 1km north and 1.5km south of the entrance at Glinks Gully. The lower limits were proposed after the council set up a working party in November 2013 to look at speed limits along Ripiro Beach which, for its entire length, is legal road and is New Zealand’s longest drivable beach with a 100km/h speed limit. The working party, which included representatives from the police, the New Zealand Transport Agency, the Department of Conservation and local iwi decided that safety issues were most serious closest to the beach entrances. Members also agreed

that lower speed limits would only be effective if they could be enforced and police reported they would have difficulties in enforcing lower speed limits along the full length of the beach. Last week, Kaipara District Council approved the working party’s recommendation that a 30km/h limit only apply close to the two main vehicle entrances at Baylys Beach and Glinks Gully. The council will now draft a by-law which will go to commissioners for their approval later this month. The lower limits will come into effect once signs have been erected. It is hoped the process will be completed in time for the lower limits to go into effect this summer.

teachers and five parents flew out for Auckland heading for Honolulu. Nine hours later they arrived in 30-degree heat. “It was just so hot,” says Ariana. “I couldn’t wait to get to the air conditioning.” During their 10 days in Hawaii, the students climbed Diamond Head, enjoyed the sun and surf of Waikiki, visited Pearl Harbour, twice, visited Hawaii’s biggest shopping centre (where they did lots of shopping), and travelled by limousine to experience The Pipeline, Hawaii’s most famous surfing spot. Now back home, they say the trip was well worth it and the experience of living and interacting with schoolmates in a foreign country was not to be missed. They say it helped them become better people. 

But it was more than a Hawaiian holiday for the students. It was a cultural experience that they worked long and hard to take part in and will be with them for many years. Dargaville High deputy principal Takari Pumipi says the school has organised an overseas trip for students every year since 2000. She says the students could volunteer for the trip. But to go, they first had to raise $3,300 each. That’s a lot of sausages, car washes and raffle tickets. Year 12 student Ariana Hutchins helped make lunch for people doing a course. Lydia Savage cleaned Baylys Beach. Aimee Constable volunteered at the hospice, while Terina Tierney helped her mother cater for a wedding. Community bonfire at Otamatea Marae

Locals stand up to prevent family violence

 by Colin Patterson

Paparoa local, Libby Jones has been chosen as one of 12 Family Violence Champions who will be leading a campaign across the Otamatea and Rodney communities in the coming months.

Otamatea Marae is inviting the Kaipara community to celebrate Guy Fawkes with a community bonfire night on Saturday, November 8. Organiser Cindy Hempsall says November 8 is also the founding day of the Ratana Faith and the church’s biggest day of the year. So it was decided to combine that with Guy Fawkes, normally celebrated on November 5. Mrs Hempsall says the day will be preceded by church events, with a Ratana church service starting at 2pm. Public events start at 5pm with stalls and entertainment including merry gorounds and bouncy castles. The Ratana band — a brass band comprised of musicians from around the country — will march and perform. Mrs Hempsall says the bonfire will be lit at 8pm. The bonfire will be followed by a fireworks display.

People are encouraged to bring their own fireworks to go into a drum to be let off as part of the public display. She says the Maungaturoto Volunteer Fire Brigade will be on hand to ensure everything goes to plan and everyone is safe. Admission is $5 a vehicle. Mrs Hempsall says it is the first time such an event has been run. “We’re hoping to make it an annual event.” Meanwhile the Fire Service has issued tips for fireworks safety. They include lighting them in a wide open area and never let children light fireworks. For more info go to www.fire.org.nz. 

“I really support the key message of the campaign, that family violence isn’t ok — but it’s ok to ask for help” says Libby. “I think healthy communities are communities that are free from family violence and I want to play my part in making that a reality for our community.” The twelve family violence champions will be promoting the ‘It’s OK to ask for help’ message through stalls at a wide range of events in the Kaipara area. They will also speak at local meetings and distribute information about family violence and where to seek help at local shops, medical centres, sports clubs and community organisations. “We have developed a new referral poster specifically for our community and we want to get this circulated widely, so that people know where they can get support when it’s needed — either for themselves or for family or friends,” adds Libby. Suicide-prevention advocate makes his case

KAIPARA LIFESTYLER NOVEMBER 4 - 2014

Electricity Rescue Helicopter Appeal

 by Colin Patterson

Please give generously

Jay McLaren-Harris is passionate about preventing suicide. The year 10 Dargaville High School student helped set up ASK (Awareness of Suicide in Kaipara). Last month he was instrumental in getting comedian Mike King to come to the Northern Wairoa and speak at a community korero about suicide prevention. Last week Jay spoke to the Dargaville Rotary Club about his group and what motivated him to get involved. He said young people often felt undervalued by society, while also being under pressure to conform to the desires of their peers. He said the community needed to ensure that young people were respected. While the Internet and social media had revolutionised communication,

the immediacy had made young people’s lives more complex and dangerous. “The Internet takes lives. Social media is a bully’s best friend,” he said. “Bullies are victims too. But if you treat them as bullies they will continue their behaviour. But if you see them as victims they’ll be more motivated to change. The safest way is to get behind a bully and support them, rather than naming and shaming them.” He said ASK has achieved good results in its short life. “ASK is a group of local people who have come together to break the circle of suicide. We’ve formed a network of professionals. We can arrange one-on-one assistance.” 

Principal sponsors of Northland’s Electricity Rescue Helicopter Service, Northpower and Top Energy, are challenging Northlanders to dig deep to support their locally owned air ambulance service. The two electricity companies will together contribute a total of $150,000 to this year’s fundraising campaign, which is officially underway. It will run until late November. Top Energy CEO Russell Shaw says he is proud to still be supporting the service. “We have had our share of employees and their families saved by this service and I am constantly hearing from people in the community who have been helped by it,” says Mr Shaw. Mark Gatland, Northpower’s CEO, says every cent helps in the fundraising appeal. “Everyone involved in and around this service – from the paramedics to the volunteers, pilots, office staff and local authorities – is so committed to helping others. The least we can do is return that support.”  Jay McLaren-Harris speaks to Dargaville Rotarians about suicide awareness

Northland Regional Council Youth Summit Four Kaipara students were among 32 young Northlanders who attended the 2014 Northland Regional Council Youth Summit held in Whangarei recently. During the day-long workshop, Year Seven and Eight students from 11 Northland schools discussed coastal environmental issues and explored ways in which young people can play an active role in the future sustainable management of Northland’s coast. The students developed action plans to help sort local sustainable management issues and these included beach access in Opononi, controlling Kaipara Harbour fish pests to improve water quality, fish dumping on Tokerau Beach, rubbish cleanups

on the Tutukaka coast, and managing wastewater, stormwater and runoff issues in Whangarei Harbour. Northland Regional Council chairman Bill Shepherd says it is encouraging to see Northland students taking an active interest in protecting and preserving their local marine environment. “The work of these students makes a real contribution to the health

of Northland’s estuaries, harbours and coastlines. That’s important for all Northlanders.” The students’ efforts will contribute to the health of a number of Northland harbours including Bay of Islands, Hokianga, Whangarei and Kaipara, along with Ngunguru Estuary and the Doubtless Bay and Tutukaka coast catchments. 

This year’s campaign is again being supported by TVNZ’s Simon Dallow, along with former Black Cap Mark Richardson and many others. General Manager of the Northland Emergency Services Trust, Vanessa Furze, says the organisation is always grateful for the support Northland’s community gives it. “But we are also trying to get our message wider because we are so busy through the summer months due to the influx of tourists from outside the region. For that reason, we ask that those holidaying in the North also help us,” says Mrs Furze. “Since 1988, we have flown close to 17,000 flights and we are becoming busier by the year as our population increases, so we need ongoing donations.” People can donate to the 2014 Electricity Rescue Helicopter Appeal in three ways: •

The 57th Squadron Air Training Corps and Dargaville RSA will come together at the Dargaville Town Hall on Sunday to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the New Zealand Cadet Services and commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of World War One.

The hall will be open from 9am for competitors and all exhibits must be ready for judging by 10.15am. The show opens to the public at 11am. Ruawai Garden Club’s Nolene Gatehouse says anyone can enter the rose and flower show and she is looking forward to a few fine days and a good turnout. A light lunch will be available from 12.15pm, followed by the prizegiving. The club has held the show for a number of years and it is always highly anticipated. Trading tables are still available for $10. For further information and schedules, phone Nolene on 09 439 2071, email Dorothy at jdsimpson@ slingshot.co.nz or collect a schedule from Ruawai Four Square. 

57th Squadron unit commander Barbara Gillatt says remembering the contribution more than 100,000 New Zealanders made in the war is now more important than ever. “So many Kiwis laid down their lives for New Zealand between 1914 and 1918 and their sacrifice on the world stage made the New Zealand way of life possible. We should honour them for that.” Dargaville RSA president, John McLean says the ATC has always played a huge part in RSA and community events. “The cadets have always been supportive of

the RSA and we have always tried to help them.” At 11am on November 9 the Dargaville RSA and 57th Dargaville ATC squadron will hold a ceremony at the Dargaville Town Hall to commemorate both events. The organisation wants families who have a connection with WW1, members of the public and former cadets to attend. Veterans and cadets will form a guard of honour. The ceremony will honour WW1 soldiers, and the role NZ Cadet Forces have played in the community. Attendees will then march to the cenotaph where the last post will be played. 

“My beautiful boy Harvey has just turned eight years old. When he was only two days old, I found out that he had heart defects and possibly a rare chromosomal abnormality, which was confirmed at two weeks old. His disability affects him in many different ways, including the ability to talk. Since that day, I have watched my son grow into a boy that loves life, rises to challenges and tries hard in everything he does, even though it is difficult for him. Being a mother of a child with a disability has given me a new perspective on life. We have been on the receiving end of help from individuals, charities and an entire medical team of specialists and therapists. I had gotten used to the routine of appointments and discussing options for Harvey’s future. He has already undergone two surgeries. Harvey struggles with chewing and swallowing, and we have made four phone calls for an ambulance (including one the day before this story was written). He has suffered from the usual childhood illnesses but on a whole, he has been healthy over the years. The night of the 14th September was different though; something was wrong. Harvey had been sick for four days leading up to the event that had us using the helicopter flight to Starship with Northland Emergency Services Trust. He was clearly in pain and was not responding as he normally would. This was concerning, as it is hard enough to communicate with a non-verbal child, and it all becomes too real and frightening in a situation where you really need to ask them what is happening. The medical team had established that it was a severe bacterial infection and they needed to find the source, as he was deteriorating before our eyes. With all that I have been through with my son, this was one of the scariest experiences.” Read more at www.facebook.com/ northland.rescuehelicopter

A cornucopia of summer fun  by Andy Bryenton

November brings warmer days and longer evenings - the perfect weather to enjoy some al fresco dining. For a real taste of summer, the action is happening in and around Dargaville.

Racing action November heralds the second yearly meeting of the Dargaville Racing Club, in what is traditionally a glittering occasion for the town. There’s not only the thrill of thoroughbreds taking to the hallowed turf in a quest for top honours, but also fun, fashion and food to make the day complete. This year the November race meeting will be held on the 14th, with predictions of sunny skies adding to the building excitement. Off-track action At the historic Northern Wairoa Hotel, Polwarth Design are at the helm of the Fashion in the Field department, putting the spotlight on summer style. Eat from an extensive menu and enjoy the entertainment.

Thanksgiving feast Celebration of a different nature is shaping up to tempt foodies, with a distinctly North American flavour. The team at the Aratapu Tavern are preparing a sumptuous menu for a traditional Thanksgiving feast, planned to run for an entire week around the old-fashioned United States holiday. While we in New Zealand don’t celebrate Thanksgiving (it’s a commemoration of the US founding settlers’ feast with local Native Americans, who helped them through a hard first season), the food on offer is a mouthwatering cultural experience. Think roast turkey with cranberry sauce, sweet pumpkin pie, corn on the cob — all the trimmings you might have glimpsed on American films and television shows. In the same way that

we have come to love the festivities and flavours of Diwali or Chinese New Year, the festive board of Thanksgiving deserves a taste — it’s a tradition worth dipping into for the sake of global flavour. Seafood delights It’s also a great time to get amongst some fishing action. Fresh seafood is abundant in the Kaipara — just ask all those out-of-district boaties who love to visit with rod and reel in tow! Why not make this the season to invest in a proper, old-school fish smoker and make that catch extra tasty? Plans abound on the internet to build traditional wooden smokers, which add another level of flavour to your fillets. Try this link — www.ehow.com/ how_8350683_build-wood-fishsmokers.html. 

Debating a beef co-operative After some lean years that produced a fair bit of hardship for beef farmers, their prospects are looking up as they enjoy high prices of up to $5.90 per kilogram for prime steers and with bulls fetching $6.00 a kilo. The has been much debate in the media on ‘where to from here’. Some are advocating that the beef industry should form a Fonterra-type co-operative – but on the opposite side of the coin are those who ask that if the Fonterra co-operative model is the way forward for beef farmers, how is it Fonterra

can’t halt the fall in milk prices. The suggestion of a lack of modern-day farmer loyalty has also been raised as an argument that forming co-operatives does not guarantee continued farmer loyalty and supply. It’s suggested many modern-day farmers like to enter into their own negotiations with independent

processors and it is evident since the formation of Fonterra there has also been the establishment of a substantial number of independent proprietary milk processing companies, some with overseas shareholding and others like Open Country where the main shareholders are the Talley Group in the South Island who have acquired ownership of Affco - the former Auckland Farmers Freezing Company. Fonterra director Ian Farrelly, who rears 10,000 calves, said last week that the beef industry lacks a strategy for adding value to the 1.9 million dairy farmer bobby calves which are processed every winter for veal and by-products. Farrelly claims that if these calves were on-reared they could add billions of dollars in extra revenue to New Zealand’s agricultural export industry. Depending on weight bobby calves can realise $2.10 per kilogram or $37.38 per head. If they were reared to 220kg–320kg weight range, at today’s prices they could realise from $1,200 to $1,800. With regard to loyalty and what is good for farmers, I believe that today’s farmer should remember that history has shown that in the early years due to a lack of organised co-operative marketing, many farmers felt they were at the mercy of the skilled negotiators of individual companies whose offices and cool store facilities were located in Tooley Street, London. Dairy produce was all sold on the free market system with the directorates or

proprietors of individual Tooley Street companies accepting full responsibility for sales and trading. They decided upon the terms of sale, methods of transport and choice of agents. London Tooley Street traders’ representatives used to deal directly with individual New Zealand dairy companies. It is said that a farmer’s yearly income depended on how much whisky was applied to the local dairy company manager during the negotiations. For many decades 95.6% of New Zealand’s income came from products grown on its pastures. The New Zealand government eventually formed the New Zealand Dairy and the Meat and Wool Producer Boards in an endeavour to bring organised marketing of New Zealand’s agricultural products, with a guaranteed price system which was the price that the farmer received for his produce. Over the years these structures have changed. It is important that we farmers should never forget the many years of hard work and investment that New Zealand farmers have committed to not only producing our agricultural products on the farm, but also being involved in the marketing and receiving our rightful share of market profits. While there are some farmers who believe that they can better manage the marketing of their own produce, in the long term, I firmly believe that New Zealand’s farming history demonstrates that farmers who take the co-operative approach will win in the end. 

Coordinated care for Kaipara Harbour  by Joanne Speechly

BE THE SOBER D FOR A NIGHT

The Integrated Kaipara Harbour Management Group (IKHMG) is hosting a two-day event in Te Hana next month, which will look at ways of managing the Kaipara Harbour through forging new partnerships. The Kaipara Harbour is one of the largest of its kind and provides drainage for 33 per cent of Northland. However, with major roads only touching its upper corners, the sheer size and significance of the harbour can be easily overlooked and IKHMG aims to address this. Kaipara Moana — Looking Back… Thinking Forward will provide an opportunity for those with an interest in the harbour to meet with scientists, local hapu and community groups, to discuss the current situation and consider ways of providing coordinated solutions for future management. IKHMG was established in 2005 and its key purpose is to promote integrated management and interagency coordination of the Kaipara Harbour and its catchment. It aims to address issues such as sedimentation, nutrient enrichment, decline in fisheries and bacterial contamination by utilising both a scientific and a Matauranga Maori approach.

CALF CLUB FUN

Springtime on the farm is also fun time for the youngsters of most rural communities, and their schools play a big part in fostering warm and fuzzy feelings for friends in the animal world. Along with their counterparts across many Kaipara schools, the kids at Aranga, Arapohue, and Ruawai took part in pet parades, with a variety of four-footed friends, continuing a tradition established in early settler days and labelled back then, as now, as “Calf Club Day.”
