Ruawai Bowling Club recently hosted a record number of teams at the annual mixed triples tournament …

“The calibre is really high — both Shane and Toni are achieving top results nationally as well as internationally,” says Sport Northland community advisor, Roxanne Kelly. Shane recently returned from the Oceania Karate Championships in Sydney with three medals — gold for the under 21 and under 75kg category, a bronze for the men’s open category and New Zealand won bronze as a team which Shane was a part of. His mother, Janine Tregidga, describes him as “focussed and determined.” “It was a pleasant surprise,” says Janine, “Shane was stoked and we told him that all his hard work had paid off.” It’s the third time Toni has been named sportswoman of the year and describes winning as overwhelming and extremely special. “Being surrounded by such talented sports men and women, it is truly an honour to win this award. The Kaipara District is very near and dear to my heart, as it is where I developed my passion for water skiing,” says Toni. She began water skiing at Kai Iwi Lakes when she was five and started competing as young as seven and at 20 years old she says, “There is still nothing that compares to being out on the water, I love it.” She recently placed second overall at the 2012 NZ National Water Ski Championships under 21 category as well as ranking second for New Zealand

to win best print and also with that shot because it didn’t ‘go right’. The chair fell over in the surf and the dress went up in the air — which wasn’t planned at all!” says Jan. “Our group was thrilled to win the prize this year as Whangarei has won it for the last three years.” A different club hosts the competition each year and is charged with selecting the year’s theme along with the judge. Judging this year was between 40 prints in total with each club submitting ten prints each.

Youth supporting skate park Unicycle world champions, Sam La Hood and Chris Huriwai attended a public meeting last Thursday to discuss moving the skate park to Selwyn Park.

“It makes sense to have facilities all in the same place — and where the current skate park is on Logan Street isn’t great and the concrete is sinking,” says Chris. The move is supported by Sport Northland’s plan to combine several informal recreational facilities anchored by the swimming pool and create a significant destination particularly for younger residents. “Initially the council didn’t support the move but now that there’s a plan that has consulted all relevant sports clubs and groups we’re looking at it

again,” says Kaipara District Council community spaces manager, Thomas Patterson. He said that submissions made in writing supporting the move or highlighting concerns can be submitted to the council by 4pm November 16 and the commissioners will then make a decision by early December. The main concern that was raised was noise to which project co-ordinator Darlene Lange said there are ways to mitigate noise pollution with trees and it won’t be lit to discourage skating at night.

Bridge protest growing Ruawai welcomes Mangawhai The protest organisers, the recently formed Bridge Concern Committee, say they have also organised police supervision for the march. “We will get things underway at 10am from the metal tip opposite Matakohe East Road leading to The Kauri Museum,” says committee spokesperson, Sue Reylands. “That’s beside the smaller of the two crossings, Andersons Bridge. We’ll be crossing the bridge and heading along State Highway 12 and then crossing Hardies, the second bridge. People are asked to bring their banners as well as other people who are also concerned and want to see the total replacement of these treacherous bridges. “Our protest now includes police control, a heavy truck and farm machinery convoy and support is coming from, Grey Power in Dargaville and Whangarei.” The Bridge Concern committee is

calling on government to implement long-existing plans for a major deviation to cut out the two bridges they regard as dilapidated and dangerous, and totally inadequate on a major highway into the district. Northland MP Mike Sabin, has described the crossings as a serious threat to the Kaipara economy as they are vulnerable to closure in an accident.

Rates payment details out  by Paul Campbell

The Kaipara District Council says 8.5 per cent of Kaipara properties have not paid their rates on the due date, with just over half of those properties in Mangawhai. Chief executive Steve Ruru says 73 per cent of ratepayers have paid their 2012/2013 rates in full and on time, and that another 19 per cent have made part-payments. “Of 13,919 rateable properties in the district, 8.5 per cent or 1,107 properties have not paid any rates. Of those properties, 570 are in Mangawhai.” The Mangawhai Residents and Ratepayers Association has been spearheading a campaign for a rates strike in protest at huge cost blowouts on the EcoCare wastewater scheme amid allegations of illegally struck rates. Mr Ruru said a “small percentage” of the 1,107 may have missed the due date, or may be finding it difficult to pay because of hardship or other reasons and it was difficult to estimate exactly how many people were refusing to pay this year’s rates. But he said the number was higher than normal. Chair of Commissioners John Robertson said it was unfair that some

people had paid their rates and that others had not. “Those people who are not paying their rates are simply not paying their way,” he said. “They are asking the vast majority of good people who are paying their rates, to pay for services like roads and water that everyone uses.” He added that what penalties might be imposed for non-payment had not been discussed. Meanwhile the Mangawhai community may soon have a greater say in the distribution of the Mangawhai Endowment Fund as part of the annual grants process. Two local representatives are to be invited to sit on the Mangawhai Endowment Fund Committee. “This move is a direct response to a number of submissions received by council which called for more transparency and greater community participation around the fund,” Mr Robertson said.

Fairytale with a twist  by Kim Munro

The Three Little Pigs, soon to open at the Otamatea Repertory Theatre, features some very showy competition-style rock-n-roll dancing. BB Wolf, played by Warwick Simpson and Foxy Lady played by Kate Davison have been sharpening up their moves for their stage-dancing debut. Their routine has been choreographed for the show by dance-coach Maura Flower, who taught the Kaipara Rockers in Paparoa for over ten years. Warwick Simpson, of Ruawai, is a relative new-comer to

the theatre — his most recent involvement was as musical director for ‘Oliver’. A talented musician and multiinstrumentalist, Warwick’s versatility shines in his first major role on stage. This is Kate Davison’s second show with ORT and theatregoers will recognise Kate from her recent portrayal of Nancy in ‘Oliver’. She teaches english and drama at Dargaville High School. The Three Little Pigs also features a kaleidoscope of colourful characters, some great songs, an exciting story spiced with humour and excellent costumes and make-up. The show opens at the Maungaturoto theatre on November 23 for a six show season. Tickets available at www.ort.org.nz or at Tony’s Lotto Shop in Maungaturoto.

Skydiving returns to west coast Fundraising riders welcomed

 Tandem master, Rob Pine, jumping over the Bay of Islands

The skydiving adrenaline team, The Ballistic Blondes, are returning to the Kauri Coast November 23, 24, 25 following on from their carnival in August. “Our carnival got cut short due to wind and rain – so we want to give people the opportunity to jump that didn’t get to do it last time,” says tandem master with 16,000 skydives to his name, Rob Pine. The team will be doing tandem jumps from the Ruawai airfield. After a 20 minute scenic flight with stunning views of the Northern Wairoa River and the Kaipara district, jumpers will experience a 45 second free fall from 12,000ft before the parachute opens. “It’s an awesome part of New Zealand

and we’re excited to come back.” Paparoa resident, Nicolette Eddy skydived for the first time in August and raised $400 for the NZ Cancer Society. “A skydive was on my bucket list, so when I received one as a gift, I decided to turn it into a sponsored jump,” said Mrs Eddy. She described the jump as “awesome” and said it might be a start of a new addiction. To book call the Ballistic Blondes team on 0800 695 867 or phone James Brackenbury on 0800 152 472.

Dargaville gave actress Aidee Walker and eight core bike riders a warm welcome on their 21 day bike ride from the Bluff to Cape Reinga, raising awareness and donations for mental health. The fundraising journey is dubbed Ride Out of the Blue. “We haven’t had a reception like this anywhere in New Zealand and we’re all very moved and will remember this for a long time,” says Aidee, best known for her appearance in the TV show Outrageous Fortune. The Kaipara Vintage Machinery Club held a pot luck dinner with performances by local acts and speeches by leading citizens. Aidee says the ride is about celebrating life and by day 18 she has become used to the long rides — the team travelled from Wellsford to Dargaville in a day, a whopping 96 kilometres. “It felt really easy — I’ve never had the thought that this isn’t something I want to do and it will be an amazing achievement to finish in three days time, but it will also be quite sad.” She says her biggest inspiration is

one of the riders, Hugh Rouse, who joined the team in Queenstown. “He was battling his own depression and after talking with us, he decided to come along for the ride and has been with us since.” Kaipara Vintage Machinery Club and Dargaville Museum volunteers prepared a hearty campfire-cooked meal. “It’s a worthy cause. We’ve all had children or grandchildren that have given us cause for concern and recently there seem to be so many youth and adult suicides — so we are happy to become involved and help organisations such as these guys,” says co-organiser, Ann Lupton. Dargaville Caravan Park provided the accommodation for the night and owner, James Brackenbury said that it was his donation valued at $1000. Before their next leg to Opononi via the Waipoa forest the riders stopped at the Dargaville Information Centre for a big breakfast to keep them going. Community opposing court decision Kaipara Grey Power has organised a protest meeting to fight the government’s decision to make the Dargaville District Court for hearings only by next year.

 Grey power president, June Klenner, outside the Dargaville District Court house

The Ministry of Justice said the aim is to streamline criminal proceedings closing four courts nationwide and making a further nine courts, including Dargaville District Court, only available when hearings are scheduled. Justice of the Peace, Eric Smitton is speaking at the meeting and said his main concern is losing the ability to hold unscheduled bail hearings any working day. “Ad hoc bail hearings will be shifted to the closest court, Whangarei — during this time, family support is crucial and I don’t think many families will be able to make the journey.” Currently the court is staffed five days a week and Mr Smitton said it averages around four unscheduled bail hearings every 20 working days per month. “It will lose its ability to provide a range of registry services to the public

including marriages, as well as birth and death certificates once it becomes a hearings only court.” “It would be a great loss to the community if this proposal was allowed to go forward. It seems to me that we have reached a situation where you have to live in an urban area. We’ve had our driving licence services taken away, and now we’re losing our court services.” Secretary for Grey Power, Ken Cashin said the community rallied together successfully fighting threats to the court ten years ago and they have to try to do it again. The commissioners are invited along with national MP, Lockward Smith, Labour MP, Shane Jones and a video presentation by former Kaipara District Council Mayor, Graeme Ramsey. The protest meeting will be held at 1pm November 9 at the Methodist Church, Dargaville.

For the love of flying  by Kim Munro

‘Those who fly do so for the love of flying,’ according to poet Cecil Day-Lewis. To demonstrate their love of flying pilots from all over Northland will be showing off their skills at the Dargaville Aero Club on Saturday, November 17. Aero clubs from Kaitaia, Otamatea, Rodney, Mercury Bay, North Shore and Whenuapai are expected to participate in the Northern area regionals which is one of five RNZAC rallies held each year with winners qualifying to compete at the national championships in February. The annual competition is to promote flying skills of its members and for pilots at all skill levels from trainees to the seasoned commercial pilot. Chief flying officer and event organiser, Murray Foster, devotes his time to training at the club on a seven day basis. “We welcome visitors to come along and watch — it’s quite a spectacle,” says Murray. There will be ten different competitions including precision flying, aerobatics, formation flying, bombing, navigation, and non instrument circuits. The programme kicks off with breakfast on the field at 8am, followed by a briefing with flying scheduled to

begin at 9am running all day with a one-hour lunch break at 12.30pm. Trophies will be presented at a dinner held at the Dargaville RSA at 8pm. Situated on the banks of the Northern Wairoa River, the club has a 1000m limestone all weather strip and a grass runway available during the summer months. One of the unique features of the club is that all flying and theory tuition is given free of charge. All the student pays for is the cost of operating the aircraft. The club has 18 students learning to fly currently.

A right royal time for anglers It’s a yearly tradition which draws in anglers from across the nation – the King of the Kaipara is on again, better than ever in its 24th year and still proudly organised by Dargaville’s fishing and outdoors destination, Nola Sports. On the 8th of December those keen to hook into a massive pool of prizes will descend on picturesque Kelly’s Bay for what has become a red-letter day on the fishing calendar. It’s a great day out fishing the Kaipara harbour, and even if your catch doesn’t earn you a prize at least you’ll have the satisfaction of a fresh seafood dinner! Last year it was the ladies who dominated the competition, with winning fish being landed

by both Cathy Chamberlain (3.84kg trevally) and Therese Carstle (6.93kg snapper). In a family twist, Cathy’s son Hayden was crowned ‘King of the Kaipara’ overall, with the heaviest kingfish of the day. If you enjoy a spot of fishing, then it’s time to pack your tackle box and get ready for the 2012 King of the Kaipara. Tickets are on sale now, and a visit to Nola Sports will secure you your place on the beach or on your boat for this year’s competition. As an added bonus, Mike Nola (the contest organiser) has a wealth of angling equipment on sale right now to help you ‘gear up’ for a hot summer of fishing action!

Support for families to immunise on time Parents and caregivers are being offered a $20 grocery voucher to encourage them to have their children immunised on time at their family doctors. The vouchers are available from November 12 and will be given to parents whose children have all their immunisations up to date by eight months and 24 months of age. “Clean water and immunisation are the most effective strategies we have available to us to promote and protect the health of our population” says chief executive, Manaia Health PHO, Chris Farrelly. Immunisations can be carried out at the Dargaville Medical Centre and the Ruawai Medical Centre when the doctor is present. Transport assistance may be provided by the health shuttle if you live outside the Dargaville town boundary. “We want to support health promoting behaviours of families who make an informed decision to immunise their children, and we know that some families are struggling to feed their children so this voucher will be really useful. For families who don’t need the grocery voucher we are encouraging them to donate it to the Salvation Army food bank” says Mr Farrelly. The Early Years Hub has recently piloted a database giving a quick screen shot of whether children under two years

are up to date with their immunisation. “It’s important to have your child fully immunised on time, 6 weeks, 3 months, 5 months, 15 months and 4 years,” says Early Years Hub manager, Lynette Matthews. Coast to Coast Healthcare is also encouraging parents and caregivers to complete their child’s immunisations at the time and age they are due with a chance to win a convertible car seat. The promotion is eligible for babies born from January 2012. The competition is drawn every three months at Coast to Coast Healthcare clinics, located in the Rodney and lower Northland region including Wellsford, Maungaturoto, Paparoa, Mangawhai, Matakana and Snells Beach.

Matakohe marks 150th  Exotic kite flying, vintage car and bullock dray rides, lawnmower racing and live music and celebration marked 150 years of European settlement at Matakohe last Saturday. The anniversary of the arrival of the Albertlanders in the northern Kaipara was the occasion for a large scale community picnic at the Matakohe cricket ground, with local farmers and businessmen providing everything from mussel fritters to steak sandwiches. “It was a huge success and all capped off by a huge bonfire and fireworks as the evening drew in,” said organising participant, Allan Swindlehurst

Fishing fun supports local school As the anglers of the Kaipara prepare for a summer season of fishing, there’s one big event which is definitely being looked forward to. The Tinopai fishing contest is a celebrated yearly event, and it’s renowned as a great family outing, the perfect way to enjoy the best the Kaipara has to offer on a balmy January day. As well as a swag of donated prizes for adults fishing both inside the harbour and out in the open ocean, there’s a great prize just for kids – an xbox 360 kinekt for the biggest sprat! It’s fitting that the Tinopai Fishing Contest has a category just for the 5 to 13 year olds, as this popular day of angling fun supports the local Tinopai School, providing much-needed special funding to help enrich the learning experience.

This year the funds raised from the fishing contest will be used to fund a week-long school trip for students, showing them ‘life outside Tinopai’ in a full schedule of educational visits and activities. Without the generosity of those who donate their time (and amazing prizes!) to organising this yearly event, Tinopai School would not be able to offer such a vital boost to the standard curriculum. The Tinopai Fishing Contest kicks off on the 12 of January next year, but tickets will be on sale soon from generous supporters such as Northland Boating Centre, Hunting and Fishing, Noel Radd Motors, Jacques 4 Square, Challenge Ruawai, GAS Paparoa and the Tinopai Store. Grab a ticket now and have fun supporting local kids with a day of fishing fun!

The metal and boardwalk walkway which opened earlier this year begins opposite the school and passes through native bush, including stands of kauri and totara, and farmland. Parents and teachers are aiming to raise $24,000 for 55 children and adults heading to Rotorua for a school camp in March 2013. The year-five and year-six camp will include the usual Rotorua highlights such as the luge and hot pools. “The more funds we raise, the more we can do. We’ve raised approximately $3500 so far which is great but we have

Shaolin Kempo Developed in China as a means to promote health, wellbeing and long life, Shaolin Chuan Fa and its associated discipline Tai Chi Chuan have become increasingly popular in the west as a means to increase energy levels, inspire self-confidence and build both mental and physical strength. Both of these respected disciplines are taught locally by Dargaville local and Senior Master (9th degree) Nick Christiansen, supported by an experienced team of instructors. The Dargaville school has been open for 27 years and enjoys a popular local following. While Shaolin Chuan Fa uses faster movements, Tai Chi Chuan utilises a slower pace, making it accessible to all ages and levels of fitness. Practicing both arts together fills in all the gaps — concentration, mental acuity, physical exercise and self confidence. Nick teaches a system developed by renowned Master Robert Gemmell, taught internationally and across New Zealand. He takes students through a modular approach, tailored to their skill levels, and his students often attend national events as they progress from strength to strength. To get involved and begin your journey of personal growth, visit Nick at the River Road school, or call 439 6226.

Too Good to Fail — ‘The feeling was, surely if the Banks lend us the money, they must think we can afford to pay for it.’ The Ministry for Primary Industries Pastoral Farm Monitoring Report makes sobering reading. Rural debt has increased from $46 billion to $50 billion and dairy farm debt forms $33 billion of that. It’s estimated hard core debt totalling around $20 billion is being held by only 2,200 farmers, representing an average of $10 million per farm and these are highly vulnerable under the present Fonterra final payout predictions, based on a $5.25 per kilogram milk solids payout, which is now looking realistic and could see half the country’s dairy farmers fail to break even after paying farm working expenses and interest. On-farm dairy costs averaging $3.80 per kilogram of milk solids, are twice the rate of the Consumer Price Index. When former Prime Minister David Lange and Roger Douglas of the second Labour Government introduced their farranging free-market financial reforms in the 1980’s, 500 farmers went to the wall, losing their farms at mortgagee sales. Farmers marched on Parliament, picketed Banks and there was general outrage over the high interest rates of 20% plus, that were being raped off the farming community by the nation’s banks. Farmers also paid principal. We remember Jim Bolger’s National Government bailing out the Bank of New Zealand because they had a $600 million liquidity problem. Rural support leaders such as Stan Hayes in Northland, Eddie Glass and others in the rest of the country, led major rebellions in defence of farmers. The financial crisis facing farmers now is not high interest rate charges, but too much debt. The papers are full of farms being forceably sold up and

farm company liquidations. One has to question the Banks’ responsibility for this current farm crisis. The old Rural Bank guidelines that you borrowed no more than four times your gross income, debt servicing was limited to 25% of your gross • For all your Cultivation Requirements income and the number of farms that you could own were • Round Hay/Silage, Pit Silage monitored by the Land Aggregation Act. In 2008 the Wall Street financial crisis hit America. The U.S. GLEN LUGTIGHEID economy was on the brink of collapse. It was argued that the Mob: 021 439 748 A/hrs: 09 439 7469 banks had been given too much freedom, after the government had removed many regulations. Motutapu Island camp fundraiser  by Rose Rees-Owen

It’s all about the discipline  by Kim Munro

How many Kaipara schools are hosting trivia nights on November 9 fundraising for trips that take students out of their comfort zones? Two, Dargaville Intermediate School and Otamatea High School. April 2013 ten students from Otamatea are off to Japan for 17 days while the whole roll from Dargaville intermediate will go to Motutapu Island for four days. “A trip overseas is priceless,” says Japanese and ESOL teacher for Otamatea, Heather Troost, “the students will billet with a sister school for the first five days and it will be hugely beneficial being immersed in a different language and culture.” Mrs Troost said MP Lockward Smith will be auctioned off as a ‘super brain’ as well as a blind auction to learn the tricks of the trade

from a professional make-up artist. Teams of up to six players can enter by showing up at the Maungaturoto Country Club at 7.30pm or by contacting Heather on 09 439 8679. Intermediate physical education teacher, Curtis Gaylor said many of the 186 students going to Motutapu Island will experience activities including sailing, rock wall climbing and river rafting for the first time. “Students will get the chance to go outside their comfort zone, experience new things and build up their confidence. We go across on the ferry and for many it’s a first.” PTA representative, Melanie Harrison says this is the first time that the Dargaville intermediate have held a trivia night and the winning team will get $120 voucher for the Funky Fish Cafe, Restaurant and Bar at Baylys Beach.

“Sure, building muscle is about the look but for us it’s really more the general feeling of being fit and well along with the challenge of the discipline that has us hooked,” says Donna and Nigel Randell. Discipline is clearly a key aspect to their sport — the pair recently won first place in their respective categories at both the national bodybuilding championships and the North Harbour Championships in October this year. Nigel won first prize in the physique masters 40+, in a class of 7 and Donna won first place in the senior figure 40+ category with 5 in the class. If that wasn’t enough — the couple won the mixed pairs division in the North Harbour champs. The pair’s success is the result of sheer hard work — they train for 16 weeks prior to any competition, with

Rocking at the New Zealand Music Awards  Forty nine Raupo School of Rock students from Kaipara attended the New Zealand Music Awards in Auckland last Thursday getting a chance to see the big winners of the night, Kimbra and Six60, perform. “All the students had a great time — It was amazing to see the performers so close up and personal — we were right up the front of the mosh-pit, around 25 meters away,” says co-ordinator, Lisa Salter. Lisa and guitar teacher and husband, David Salter formed Raupo School of Rock in 2008 teaching guitar to students from Te Kopuru, Matakohe and Ruawai schools as well as hosting rock camps each year with the most recent one in September at Tangihua Lodge. a punishing schedule of early morning cardio workouts, after work weight training sessions and a strict dieting regime. As they also attend qualifying rounds throughout the year along with the competitions, Donna and Nigel are ‘in training’ most of the year. Donna is sponsored by Topmark Performance Nutrition who provide a monthly budget for product and in return attends promotional events as well as body building events throughout the year and also blogs on the facebook page. She says, “being called on to attend events is a great incentive to stay in shape — Nigel and I really enjoy going, catching up with everyone and it keeps us motivated!” “I’m really pleased to have achieved the goals I set this year, one being to win the nationals.”
