 Kaipara primary schools took part in their annual pet and agricultural days recently, with children bringing their pet lambs and goats for judging. Due to the awareness of Mycoplasma bovis disease restrictions, there were no calves included in the days; instead, students submitted video footage of their calf rearing skills at home for virtual judging. Pictured is Tangowahine School student, Nia Tierney, sharing some love with her pet lamb. The story continues with more photos on page 9.

The youngsters also shared in the fun of a candy maze which related favourite stories as they wandered through. Fishin’ for a story

Kaipara growth positive

 by Jill Dickie

Dargaville-based family business, Wild West Worcester, will once again be on screen in front of New Zealanders as they feature on television in an upcoming episode of Gone Fishin’.

According to recent information released by Statistics New Zealand, the Kaipara District has experienced a 3.1% growth. It is the largest non-city region in the North Island to do so, and mayor Dr Jason Smith is extremely confident about the future potential the area has.

 James and Graeme Sinclair, from the television show Gone Fishin’, with the family from a locallybased worcester sauce business

The business team comprising of Katie Le Noel, Henry Peita and Dominique Peita, met TV presenter Graeme Sinclair and his son James on several occasions earlier this year, keeping in touch and waiting for the opportunity to showcase Northland’s west coast. The idea of a west coast paradise with hunting and fishing on the doorstep finally tempted the Sinclairs, and they made the trip last week to spend a few days filming an episode for the popular show. “We loved it up there but feel we have unfinished business — we unearthed

more than we filmed. The rest of the country fail to understand what is on offer, and we would love to learn more about the history of the area,” said TV presenter, Graeme Sinclair. During one of the windiest and wildest weeks in some time, the crew spent time learning about local history from the museum and local fisheries officer, Cyril Ranginui and visited The Saucerer’s special hunting spot. They also shared locally caught and smoked mullet — liberally dosed in Wild West Worcester sauce. The episode will screen on Sunday, November 11 at 4.30pm. 

“There were around 700 new people to the district in the last 12 months, and with just 100 of these being new births this shows there is a significant interest being shown in what is on offer in the Kaipara,” he said. There has been an increase in resource consents also, leading the Kaipara District Council to redo the District Plan to enable it to effectively manage the current and future growth. The planned upgrade of the current roading infrastructure between Te Hana and Whangarei, if it were to proceed as indicated to the west of the Brynderwyns, would direct traffic through Maungaturoto further increasing the potential for growth in this area. “This is the time to not only  Mayor Jason Smith encourages Kaipara residents preserve what we have but to to join the new KDC Peoples’ Panel to complete build economic opportunities,” surveys and offer feedback on council services said M ay o r Smith. “Maungaturoto has such potential “Growth statistics are just the due to the foresight of community beginning for the growth we have leaders to create such a welcome ahead. Each year we receive many baby birds but some of this could be avoided by reminding children that when they see a nest with baby birds, that they should leave them there for the adult birds to look after. A young bird with feathers found on the ground can be put back up in a tree as they are just learning to get around. While jumping from branch to branch they sometimes miss and end up on the ground. Touching the chick will not upset the adult bird. It would be also helpful if any teachers reading this could pass this message on to children so they don’t go looking for nests in school grounds! Many small chicks that are taken from the nest too soon will only die in captivity, so if you have any questions or concerns call us here at the Northpower Native Bird Recovery Centre. We have received quite a few kiwis over the past six weeks - some hit by cars and others caught by dogs.

09 407 7219 @ Northland@parliament.govt.nz fb.com/mattkingmp

Again, when walking your dog, please take notice of any conservation signs asking that you keep your dog under control. You would be surprised how many people claim their dogs don’t catch Kiwi as they have never seen them. The fact is, kiwis have a scent that a dog can smell from 100 metres away and it ’s too late once a kiwi has been caught. With the influx of birds over the next five months we really need ex tra support from you all because food and medication costs sky rocket and that takes a big bite out of our funds. Remember the Recovery Centre is run voluntary so your support means a lot to us. When you find a bird, just keep it warm and quiet and don’t give it food or water as this usually kills them because the stress is very high on any bird when being captured by humans.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR It was interesting to read local opposition MP Matt King's letter in the October 23 issue of the Kaipara Lifestyler praising his party’s handling of the Jamie-Lee Ross needless saga. I don't belong to any political party and although understandably, Mr King doesn't refer to the main concern of the whole unsavoury affair, let me assure Mr King that many are discussing the unbelievable revelation that his party would even consider selling off the parliamentary position of MP for a large donation. Large that is, if one

thinks that to be an MP all one has to cough up is $100,000. No, Mr King, brave folk died for the democracy that we enjoy, and this issue is not going to go away despite how much dosh is thrown about. There is a growing call for party election funds to be provided from the public purse — a measly several million every three years — much less than your party's flag referendum and worth every democratic cent.  Ninety-something bridge player, Peter Simpkins, has been growing young kauri trees for many years and presents them to placegetters in the club’s kauri tournament

It is a game for all ages — in spite of many thinking it’s suited to the elite or for those of retirement age — with students learning the game whilst at school. Bridge New Zealand has a youth team, some of whom travel around the world representing the country in youth competitions. “I have been playing for many years now, and I was amazed when I came up against a couple of very young men who just thrashed us in a competition,” said Dargaville player, Sue Jensen. The card game is played by four players in two competing partnerships

sitting around a table, and the idea is to be able to tell your partner what you have in your hand by making bids that signify certain points. Your partner then tells you what he or she has in her hand, and you go from there — and the pacesetters say its the best exercise for their brains. Dargaville currently has around 60 members — some who have been playing successfully for more than 40 years — and the club welcomes newcomers. Exotic birds take flight

Boating safety grant

 by Jill Dickie

 by Jill Dickie

After at least eight reported exotic bird escapes recently, the Northland Regional Council is asking people to report any sightings of Indian ring-necked parakeets, rainbow lorikeets or sulphur-crested cockatoos in the wild.

Kaipara boaties and enthusiasts should be well covered for safety knowledge after the recent safer boating grant from Maritime New Zealand, which will enable more training and education resources for Northland Regional Council to utilise.

 Regional council biosecurity officer, Ashlee Lawrence, with some Indian ring-necked parakeets similar to escaped pet birds, which are becoming an issue for biosecurity officials in the north

The $30,000 grant offers assistance for such things as new life jackets and educational handouts and videos for children and is a portion of the $450,000 distributed nationwide. “Northland is one region, and as such we are not purchasing assets in each area; however, Kaipara will have a summer safe ambassador, provided with resources and handouts,” said maritime officer, Northland Regional Council, Tammy Crookshanks. “We will also be attending the events like field days or other events that may pop up in the area, and general safety messages will be spread over the whole region.” Maritime NZ director, Keith Manch, said the nationwide grants are a practical way of helping boaties keep safer on the water. “We fund children’s boating education because in New Zealand we often start boating quite young, children can influence families, and our children are our next skippers. Skipper responsibility is central to safety, knowing your boat and

seen them or had any escapes as soon as possible, and we’ll do our best to retrieve them or locate their owners,” he says. Mr McKenzie says all three species are commonly held in captivity in New Zealand and are listed as unwanted organisms by the Ministry for Primary Industries. They are also considered exclusion animals under the Northland Regional Pest and Marine Pathways Management Plan 2017–2027. He says anyone who sees one of these exotic birds at large, should phone the regional council on 0800 002 004. 

The emphasis at the clinic is on making sure women have as much information as possible about their own health on which to base their decisions as to the type of treatment that is best for them. Dr. Rachel Moss, the specialist gynaecologist, can see you to make a thorough gynaecological assessment and discuss options for treatment. A GP referral can be helpful but is not essential.

Council biosecurity manager, Don McKenzie, says the exotic aviary species threaten native bird populations by competing for food, taking nesting places and introducing diseases. The recent escapes coincide with this year’s breeding season. “Lorikeets and parakeets can also become significant agricultural pests of some cereal and fruit crops,” said Mr McKenzie. “These birds are good breeders and can establish populations quite quickly, so it’s important to act fast before they breed and spread to other areas.  by Matt King, Member of Parliament for Northland

Long before I was in parliament, I held the view that the then Labour opposition understood very little about rural New Zealand. Now that I am in parliament and they are in power, I am even more so of that view. I have come to that conclusion because Labour and its coalition partners have failed to provide any reasoning, let alone justification, for a series of actions that show a singular lack of understanding of the damage they are causing in the regions. Take transport. Labour has — taken it and us for a ride that is. Their treatment of the transport portfolio is nothing short of inept, and we in the regions: in Northland, in Kaipara, are feeling it. Because of this government’s actions, it is now costing us $25 more every time we fill up a tank — and that’s on petrol taxes alone. That is not the worst of it. The worst of it is that we are not getting anything back for it. The government has cut $5 billion from regional roads, and the

recently announced decision by the NZ Transport Agency, responding by their own admission to ‘government policy’, to cancel the dual carriageway once planned for Warkworth to Whangarei is reprehensible, bordering on the ridiculous. Doesn’t the government understand how important that road is to we in the north? It’s called a Road of National Significance (RONS) for a reason, for goodness sake. Fact is, I fail to understand something, too. I fail to understand how THEY fail to understand lifting fuel prices and cancelling vitally-needed roading improvements to fund a tramway in Auckland is doing anything for Northland. It’ll be a long road back from this mess. 

A pine plantation is the habitat of choice for the endangered karearea – the New Zealand falcon. That’s where most of the remaining 4,000 pairs of this spectacular bird live. A freshly harvested forest block makes ideal nesting and hunting territory. Tall adjacent pines give the adults vantage points for spotting their prey.

Primary schools hold pet days

At the Kaipara schools’ annual pet days this year calves were not included, as a precaution for the potential spread of Mycoplasma bovis, so students with calves at home were able to video themselves raising and caring for their pets.

For children with lambs and goats, they brought their pets to school for judging, where the animals were assessed for looks and performance. The champions in each category will go

on to compete against other schools outside the Kaipara district. The main purpose of pet days is to encourage children to take an interest in animal welfare and learn how to present their animal for a community day at their school. An animal is chosen when about one week old and then reared and taught to lead by the children. 

A life saved in Kaipara Dargaville resident Jenny Finlayson had a black spot in her memory for a few weeks last year. She can’t remember how or why she woke up in hospital, watching and listening intently as people asked her what her name was and to identify where she was. What she didn’t know at the time, was that she was waking up from a coma, in the intensive care unit at Whangarei Hospital, weeks after falling ill with what she thought was ‘just the flu’. The now 71-year-old recalls feeling unwell and heading to the doctors, where was prescribed rest for pneumonia and a few days off work. She did as she was told and went home to rest, only to start feeling worse as time went by. Home alone and resting is the last memory she has of her ordeal. With family finding her quite unwell on their arrival at home, she was rushed to Dargaville Hospital by her husband and daughter - with the doctors at the hospital realising swiftly that she was in grave danger. “Apparently my organs were starting to shut down. I had sepsis and I was in a bad way.

The Northland Rescue Chopper was called to fly me to Whangarei Hospital and I was put into an induced coma,” she says. Jenny believes the quick actions by the doctors and the speed in which the helicopter arrived and flew her to Whangarei Hospital saved her life. “On arrival at Whangarei Hospital, I was admitted to the ICU where I was for three weeks. I woke up after five days and had no idea where I was, or what had happened. I thought I might have been in a car crash until they told me the details. “I found out afterwards that even the nurses who had worked on me that night in Dargaville Hospital were unsure of whether I would make it. It was that close. “That helicopter saved my life, it truly did. I was so close to death and the speed of that flight played a major part in me being here today.” Jenny says the helicopters are an essential service that is so heavily relied upon across the reaches of Northland. “Those helicopters really do save lives, I am living proof of that. I urge people to support them.”

Build smart for energy savings  by Andy Bryenton

Whether starting afresh from the foundations up or planning a complete reimagination of an existing home, one of the top factors on the minds of homeowners coming into the summer of 2019 is energy efficiency. Like petrol prices, electricity prices are a bone of contention, and driving them down can be as easy as investing wisely in the way you build — and adopting new technologies, you may not have thought possible. For example, we all know that one of the top costs in a home’s energy profile is hot water heating. For those with a small occupancy, a califont may be the answer, swapping electricity for on-demand gas heat. As well, there are other options for even the largest families — take, for example, an integrated system which utilises a hot water cylinder for storage, heavily insulated at the core of the home. During summer, solar panels aligned to catch

the northern sun do all the hard work, while in winter an efficient fireplace — already used to heat the living areas in lieu of electric heating — provides piping hot water as well. To add more value, a heat transfer unit can be placed in the roof cavity, distributing excess heat from the fireplace to the home’s bedrooms. Another warming option which has come a long way in efficiency is underfloor heating. Fluid based units have traditionally run on gas, electricity or diesel, but in the countryside, there’s the option to run a wood burning underfloor system — and one which is so thermally efficient that a single sturdy log can heat a large home all night. Combine factors like these with gas cooking in the kitchen — the chef’s choice, in any case — and suddenly the electricity bill has been razored down

dramatically. Fitting LED lights goes another step of the way, but for those who really want to get off the grid (or feed power back into it for a small profit), there’s the option of fitting photovoltaic solar panels to power up those last few appliances. The best time to consider PV electric, of course, is when reroofing — so why not fit out that roof cavity with great insulation and run the tubing for extractors and ventilation units while the iron is being replaced? A little forethought and an investment in technology could see even the oldest designs of home renovated into energy smart money savers. Talk to your local plumbers, gasfitters, roofers and electricians when planning your build to incorporate power-saving factors and chop those monthly bills down to size. 

This year’s crop of top homes is in, designed by some of our most talented local architects and executed with style by masterful tradespeople. While many of these masterpieces are beyond the budget of the average home renovator or builder, there’s a lot we can take away from the broader trends which inform these highly acclaimed homes — and those of their kind abroad. The key to many, if not all of the top efforts in design for 2018 has been the place of the home in the environment. Not just it’s physical position, though there has been much thought given in each example to how the structure forms a cohesive picture with the land, and how the land is in turn framed by

the windows and internal spaces of the home when those within look outside. There’s also a rejection of the old colonialist sensibility that a building should stamp its mark on the scenery. Now it’s the other way round, with some of 2018’s top-rated homes seeming to organically grow from hillsides, mimic stands of reeds by the water, or sit like natural features on forested slopes. This aesthetic extends to practical considerations — the use of glass and concrete to harvest warmth and store it, for example, or the use of recycled materials or alternative construction techniques. In some extreme designs, meadows extend onto rooftops and windows are fixed in walls hung with vertical gardens, or weathered-look timber is interspersed with deliberately patina-surfaced metal. Inside, living

spaces add drama with high and angled ceilings, room to display carefully selected works of art and cleanliness of form, which is almost stark in its use of materials like concrete and timber laminate, which conceal their own ability to foster warmth. Thus, even if it’s not possible to start with a blank sheet of paper and sketch out a designer home, the modern materials technology deployed by our top architects could provide the present-day renovator with interesting options. Some of these enable a striking image, others the ability to play with the definition of indoor and outdoor spaces to best effect. While others help to harvest the sunlight, seal in warmth, cut power bills and make even the most traditionallooking colonial villa conversion a ‘home of tomorrow’. 

Improving on nature  by Andy Bryenton

We Kiwis are an outdoors kind of people — perhaps stemming from our heritage, from the generally mild climate, from a simple appreciation of living in a picture-postcard beautiful country. No matter what the excuse, as summer rolls around, most of us want to entertain guests, fire up the barbecue and generally spend as much time as possible outside. For some, this means extended sojourns at the lakes or the beach. For most, it means rolling up the proverbial sleeves and taking on the backyard, modern New Zealand’s last wilderness. Well — not really. But after a winter of neglect, it can certainly look like one! Big plans come with summer — fueled by rosy-cheeked images of barbecue chefs basking in their family’s adulation, or sophisticated adult friends sipping Pinot Gris beneath a stylish loggia. There’s a clear line between the dream and the kikuyu-haunted, rusty-swing-set reality, and with the right tools, it’s not as tough as it looks. Start by uncovering the blank canvas. Deploy the mower and weed eater (or brush cutter, if things have gotten truly wild) after giving both a once-over to ensure a minimum of swearing and cursing on — attempted — startup. If

your lawn is too extensive, remember that it’s both money saving and trendy to grow your own veg these days — a quick trip to the timber merchants could furnish you with raised garden beds and henceforth a crop of healthy, organic green to brag about. For paths, remember that crushed shells cover a multitude of sins. Wood chip or bark does the dame for ornamental gardens and those scrappy bits along fences, tip, rake and enjoy. The masterpiece of many a backyard is a deck from which to survey one’s kingdom. It harks back to our ancestors wanting to be the captain of a ship, perhaps — but just like boat builders of yesterday, it pays to do a great job once rather than sink. Always assume you’ll need more pilings than you do. Remember that once the barbie, the tables, the

patio heater, the sunshade and the kids’ pool are up there, it will need to take the weight. In fact, the choice of toys for the outdoor entertainer is now so great that the indoor kitchen pales in comparison. So the real challenge is not constructing a perfect haven for summer fun — it’s learning to cook something other than partially charcoaled sausages to go with that Pinot Gris. 

FA R M I N G

From the podium to the paddock  by Andy Bryenton

Racing has always been the seedbed for change in automotive culture — a crucible where machines and drivers are tested to their limits. Those early years of Grand Prix racing saw the rapid development of things we now take for granted, such as easy to replace spare wheels, modern brakes, powerful headlamps and more. Subsequent decades saw developments sift through into the cars we drive on a daily basis. Unsurprisingly, it’s the same in the world of off-road racing. Here, CanAm has enjoyed a stellar season, with Maverick X3 off-roaders clinching top honours at the 2018 UTV World Champs in Nevada, the Grand National cross country series in North Carolina, and the San Felipe desert race in Baja — all on the same weekend. Can-Am has also entered vehicles to great success in some of the most gruelling competitions in the world, such as Australia’s Finke Desert Race. Moreover, why? The answer comes down to two factors — the kind of drivers who want to push the limits of grip, horsepower and gravity demand more and more advanced machines. The knowledge gained in this intense environment ultimately filters through into the other products, which the manufacturer produces for more prosaic tasks. In the same way that Ford’s racing programs improve the technology available in your Fiesta or Focus, Can-Am’s efforts lead to practical advancements in their range of farm vehicles. Once you have learned to keep a super-powerful racing

off-roader in one piece in the desert heat and rocky, sandy terrain of Baja or the outback, you learn a lot about chassis strength, suspension durability, air filtration, engine cooling, tyre wear, operator comfort, safety and more. All of that funnels down through research and development, leading to a better product for the farm as well as

a more exciting racing season. After all, the challenges faced in day in, day out hard work on a Kiwi farm are easily as punishing as the flat-out blast across the Nevada desert, which saw those Mavericks take podium honours. It’s a different kind of endurance competition, but it’s one, which is fed and nurtured by a need for speed. 

THELMA AND CHARLIE PARKER EDUCATION TRUST The above education trust was established at the direction of the late Mr Charlie Parker, a wellknown and respected local businessman. The purpose of the trust is to establish and maintain scholarships which will be known as the THELMA AND CHARLIE PARKER SCHOLARSHIPS. Each scholarship is designed to assist any current pupil or pupils of Dargaville High School, who, in the opinion of the trustees, would benefit from further education or study of either tertiary or other nature, or of any recognised course of education or study and who would otherwise be unable to undergo such education or study having regard to the financial resources of that student and/or that student’s immediate family. The trustees of the trust therefore invite applications for assistance from students of Dargaville High School or from any person on a student’s behalf. Application forms are available from the school office or Hammonds Law, Solicitors. To enable consideration by the trustees, completed applications must be delivered to the High School office or the offices of Hammonds Law by 5.00pm on Friday the 9th of November 2018.
