 Community members, volunteers and supporters were invited to walk the Gum Diggers track at Red Hill cemetery at the opening with organiser Des Subritzky

“We couldn’t have accomplished all we have without the tremendous help of volunteers and sponsors including Douglas Logging, Newman Engineering, and many other community families and supporters,” said organiser Des Subritzky. Old trees were cleared from above the graveyard for safety reasons, concrete berms were added and the old Gum Diggers track was reopened for people to walk the path to a reminiscing seat above the cemetery, looking out across the Northern Wairoa River to Tokatoka and Maungaraho rock. The Dargaville Dalmatian Club tamburica band played for the event at Coronation Hall and at the cemetery

for the official opening of the old Gum Diggers track where locals Barry Searle and Leith McKenzie cut the ribbon. Kaipara mayor Greg Gent spoke at the celebration and said the project was a testament and amazing example of what a community can achieve together and it was accomplished through the humbleness of Des Subritzky and his vision, leadership and ability to work with others. “As a council we need to support community projects like this and help remove obstacles so that the communities and volunteers can progress forward and accomplish positive outcomes,” said Mayor Gent. 

Community Sport team leader Roxanne Kelly said Emma’s achievements at the 2016 paralympics were hard to top. “It is great to have someone from a small town achieve at that level and to be recognised in her home town.” Matthew Moulds was awarded Silver Fern Farms Sportsman of the Year and his award was accepted on his behalf by his sister Jessica Moulds. Chance to star local produce Looking for love?  by Ayla Miller

 by Ayla Miller

If you are passionate about food and showcasing the Kaipara region, now is your chance to do so, as the My Kitchen Rules television series team begin their search for participants throughout New Zealand.

Those seeking love or companionship have a chance to get out and meet new people thanks to Dinner for Six — a singles agency expanding to the Kaipara region.

 Celebrity chefs and My Kitchen Rules judges, Pete Evans and Manu Feildel could be guests in your home

Producer Simon Fleming says this is opportunity to showcase your region and use local produce. “It’s a great, fun, family show and if people like cooking and entertaining it’s the perfect thing for them.” He says being in a rural town will not be a disadvantage. “We take everything on a case by case basis and we like teams to use local produce as well. So it could be locally made cheese or something from the nice little produce store down the road. A lot of rural people are hunter gatherers. Nothing is limited and everything is fair.” Dargaville Community Development Board development manager Lorraine Davidson says the board are keen

to promote the region through this and will back any teams who want to participate. “My Kitchen Rules is a golden opportunity to profile the Dargaville and districts area and all we have to offer especially our great outdoors. We also have a wonderful array of local fare available and I’m sure our local hunters and fishers would be delighted to offer some of their game for the purpose of utilising and designing menu around these delicacies.” This series will air on TVNZ 2 in 2017. “This was a very special occasion. We have a lot of our ancestors buried at the cemetery so it was very touching for us,” said band conductor Mr Nick Puharich. “The atmosphere was lovely and the whole event was wonderful. We were very pleased to be invited to play. It was the first time the club have performed in this particular hall since 1958. The last time we played there our car broke down and we walked from near the Aratapu hotel arriving at the hall just in time to perform on stage.” Fourteen stringed instruments make up the orchestra which is unique to the southern hemisphere. “It was a special

order especially for us, handmade by the Gilg family in Croatia. They have been making the instruments for five generations,” said Mr Puharich. “Our band play traditional music, mainly to accompany the Kolo dancers and we do also play other melodies. “The Dargaville Dalmatian Cultural Club is about the language, music and dancing. It is doing well now with the younger generation interested in learning the culture and language. Anyone is invited to join us, you don’t have to be of Dalmatian descent at all, we have a lot of multicultural players and dancers.” 

Where It’s Easy to Live

Road Works for November 2016

Proposed Temporary Road Closure

PUBLIC NOTICE – Broadspectrum NZ Ltd, Kaipara Branch is continuing their full network round of glyphosate roadside vegetation spraying. The spraying contractor of Broadspectrum NZ Ltd is performing vegetation growth control and roadside spraying alongside sealed and unsealed roads in the Kaipara District.

Pursuant to the Transport (Vehicular Traffic Road Closure) Regulations 1965, the Kaipara District Council hereby gives notice that the Dargaville Lions Club has made an application to have the following streets and carparks temporarily closed on the day and at the time below for the purpose of holding the 2016 Dargaville Christmas Parade.

Drivers are advised to take extra care where work is being carried out on roads, regardless of whether there is a special speed restriction.

Saturday 3 December 2016 – 9:00am till 2:00pm

With the roads starting to dry up as we head into the summer months please be aware of the increased dust nuisance from travelling on unsealed roads. Please drive courteously and adjust your speed accordingly (drive to the conditions). Routine works planned on Council roads throughout the whole District during November include pothole repairs both on unsealed and sealed roadways as they are identified and the clearing of culvert inlets and outlets. Maintenance patrols have been replacing many reflectorized edge marker pegs and this will continue as well as replacements and repairs to road signs.

• Victoria Street from Totara Street to the west side of the Central Hotel carpark; • All of Parenga Street, Totara Street and Kapia Street; • All of Hokianga Road south of Victoria Street; and • Edward Street from Victoria Street to north side of the Central Hotel carpark. Any objections to this proposal should be in the hands of the Kaipara District Council no later than 4:00pm on Monday 14 November 2016. This is the second notification.

Area specific works planned during November include: • Minor bridge repairs throughout the district; • Maintenance grading throughout the district when conditions are suitable;

Proposed Temporary Road Closure

Pursuant to the Transport (Vehicular Traffic Road Closure) Regulations 1965, the Kaipara District Council hereby gives notice that the street listed below will be temporarily closing on the day and at the time below for the purpose of a Pedestrian Zone Trial.

• Unsealed/sealed pothole repairs throughout the District; • Roadside vegetation spraying – all rural roads; • Water table restoration – Bell and Agnes Streets, Notorious West, Otioro and Mangawhai Heads Roads and Glinks Gully; and • Pre-reseal repairs – Paparoa-Oakleigh, Tinopai, Ruawai, and Waihue areas. We may experience some delays with work programmed during the month of November if weather restricts plant movements and progress; however, the majority of works will continue.

Thursday 8 December 2016 - 7.00am to 6.00pm Lower Hokianga Road, Dargaville between Victoria Street and Parenga Street. Any objections to this proposal should be sent to Darlene Lang at Kaipara District Council no later than 4.00pm on Tuesday 29 November 2016.

Area specific works completed during the last month include: • Drainage improvements – Awakino Point North, Arapohue, Mooney and Huarau Roads; • Unsealed road strengthening – Kirikopuni Valley and Mooney Roads; and • Pre-reseal repairs - Bickerstaffe, Oneriri, Oruawharo and Pahi Roads. All routine work is done in cycles across the district. In endeavouring to provide good roads at the most economic cost, sometimes only spot grading and metalling is done as it is about one-quarter of the price of blanket metalling and grading that has tended to be done in the past.

Community Assistance Grants Applications Open Thursday 01 December 2016 Kaipara District Council’s Community Assistance Grants are now available for community organisations wanting capital or operational funding to continue their work.

Thank you for your co-operation as these projects to improve travel on your roads are being completed. Please feel free to contact the Council’s Customer Service Representatives on 0800 727 059 for more information

Organisations that could provide services to the Council and community, that the Council would otherwise provide, could also consider a Contract for Service with the Council. This is a formal agreement for delivering services the Council might otherwise provide for Kaipara residents and visitors.

The Kaiwaka School Kapa Haka group will be performing at the opening of their Twilight Gala which will the major fundraiser for the year.

The Hikuwai o Kaipara Waka Ama women’s team competed in the annual Pearl of the North Waka Ama festival held at Te Tii recently entering in the novice W6 12 kilometre race starting at Tapuaetahi Beach.

 The Kaiwaka School Twilight gala will be raising funds for new computers and equipment for the students

“Our students are really well known for their outstanding Kapa Haka, and this is not to be missed,” says principal Rosie Ellis. “We are fundraising for new laptops and information, communication and technology (ICT) equipment for our students, so they are up-to-date digital learners. Everyone is looking forward to new and improved equipment.” There will be a big White Elephant stall and second hand books for sale. The food stalls will be open for delicious dinner choices, including pig on a spit, and seafood chowder. “Last year the Kids Zone was really popular

and this year it will be even bigger and better. There will be kids’ stalls, plant and produce stalls, a big cake stall, a silent auction, and lots of raffles, including a Quick Fire raffle. The silent auction winners and the big raffle draw will be at 7.30pm. “We invite everyone to our Kaiwaka School Community Twilight Gala at the school, 33 Mangawhai — Kaiwaka Road, on Friday, November 18, commencing at 5.00pm.” If you would like to have a craft or service stall at the event, contact the school on 09 431 2309. 

“This was our first experience racing on the open ocean and we really enjoyed it,” said team member Sophie Malone. “We have put in many hours of training on the Northern Wairoa river and being a part of the competition gave us good experience. We are trying to put Dargaville on the map for Waka Ama and this is the first time we represented at this festival.”Sophie says they are a small club but the team plan to be present at more festivals and competitions in the future. “Training on the river is a real challenge for us as it isn’t as sheltered as some bays and

ATTENTION SEPTIC TANK OWNERS Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained. A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not maintained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. These problems include nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, toilets gurgling and taking time to empty. At this stage your septic system is a serious health hazard to you and your children. Human waste produces faecal coliform bacteria, a source of viral and bacterial gastroenteritis as well as Hepatitis A debilitatand other diseases. Hepatitis can be a debilitat ing condition and cause long-term harm to children. There are only three remedies. One: stop using the septic system until it recovers. This can take

it has different currents, sandbars and tides. This helps with our ability and really tests our skills, especially for the steerer. The sport is really social and you learn to work as a team. “Ngati Rehia did a great job of organising and hosting the competition and we are looking forward to competing again next year and aim to enter more teams.” The team will continue to train on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5pm at the Dargaville Boat Club, Totara Street, Dargaville for those who are interested in giving waka ama a go. 

Save money by keeping your septic system effective and healthy

over a month and is not normally practical. Two: excavate your septic system and relocate it. This is very costly and time consuming, sometimes requiring new resource consents and different systems. Three: treat your septic system with Septi-Cure™ every six months. Septi-Cure is cost effective. By far the most cost effective solution is to pour one litre of Septi-Cure™ down the toilet bowl every six months. This simple action will help keep your system working at top efficiency by reducing solids and scum. Instead of emptying your tank frequently, the reduction in solids and scum saves you expensive pump out costs. Your irrigation field and leach lines will become clear of slimes and blockages so nature can handle the gradual seepage and evaporation for you. When this is happening your system will be operating effectively and not endangering you or your family’s health. What is Septi-Cure™ Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring

microorganisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. As they progress through to your irrigation field they feed on the slimes that prevent seepage and evaporation. When seepage and evaporation return to normal, you have reduced the risk of contaminating groundwater and the environment as well as reducing the chances of infection for you and your family. Eventually, they get washed out of the system and have to be replaced to continue their work. This is why you introduce Septi-Cure™ to your septic system every six months for maximum efficiency. Problematic septic tanks – treat with Septi-Cure™. Prevent septic system problems – treat with Septi-Cure™.

A satisfied customer in Hamilton has been using Septi-Cure for over five years. He says this allows them to have an odour free septic tank with low maintenance costs. He also says that his service person is amazed at how well Septi-Cure works, keeping their tank in very good condition. * Results May Vary Before*

“It shows how hard work pays off. The boys being in the squad lines them up for the Future Blues development plan and is the first step into professional rugby for them. “They have the potential to go far in the sport.” The students have been identified as players with future potential and were selected when Blues High Performance manager Tony Hanks led a team of talent identification staff from Northland, North Harbour and Auckland, tasked with selecting 55 young players from the region. The players have been invited to attend two development camps as part of the Blues Under 17 Development Programme which is designed to provide the developing players with some insight into the life of a professional rugby player. The Under-17 squad is the first step in the Blues Development pathway. Mr Hanks called the programme one of the most important in the Blues development pathway. “It’s our first Blues selected squad, so it’s the first time developing players can represent the Blues and come into our environment,” he said. 

Safety reminder  by Ayla Miller

Police are issuing a reminder to beach-goers about driving safely on the beaches following a recent incident involving two cars near Mahuta Gap Road.

 Constable Reuben Cohen monitors vehicle speeds on Ripiro Beach whilst sergeant Simon Craig takes notes behind him

Relieving rural response sergeant Simon Craig says it is essential for people to remember that all road rules apply on the beach. “It is 30km an hour within one kilometre of the entrance at Glinks Gully, Baylys Beach and Omamari and these areas are sign posted.” Animals and children are another hazard on the beach along with soft sand. “The legal drink drive limits for drivers 20 years and over are a breath alcohol limit of 250 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath.” A multi agency patrol programme will be rolled out over the Christmas

and New Year period on Ripiro Beach involving the Kaipara District Council and other community organisations. Sergeant Craig says police will be supporting this safety initiative and this may involve some endorsement. “We want everyone to have a fun and safe time at the beach by sticking to those road rules and being considerate to other people on the beach.” With the tourist season approaching, sergeant Craig says there will be an increased number of drivers on the road who may be unfamiliar with New Zealand road rules and encourages road users to report dangerous driving by calling *555. 

From Punjabi bhangra and African drumming to kapa haka and highland dancing, Te Kopuru School will be a mecca of culture on Saturday, November 26.

 Te Kopuru School Multicultural Performing Arts Festival provides a platform for students to perform in front of their community

Organised by the Te Kopuru School board of trustees, the annual Multicultural Performing Arts Festival has become a much anticipated event on the Northern Wairoa event calendar. Principal Lee Anderson says the purpose of the festival is to expose the children and the community to multiple cultures so that positive attitudes can be established. “The purpose of this festival is also to further grow and maintain a relationship between the school and the community and to celebrate the diverse culture in New Zealand. We just want to give children a taste of what

they can do and to promote the clubs they can join. The festival also provides a platform for our children to perform,” she said. This year the festival will include the usual food stalls as well as Segways, orb balls, paintball and golfing activities to try out. Circus Kumarani will be there to demonstrate their skills along with the school band, Shaolin Kenpo, Zumba, the Dargaville Ukulele Club and many more. A delegate who attended the annual meeting of the Federation of NZ Grey Power in Christchurch was re-elected, and was accompanied by another Kaipara member as chair of the federation’s Retirement Villages Advisory Group. Kaipara Grey Power always has two members to attend the quarterly Northland Zone One meetings where ideas and suggestions are formulated as remits to the AGM. Remits we succeeded with include having the health travel allowance increased from 40kms to 80kms when attending a doctor or hospital out of your area. These are now being actioned by the federation. seminar was very successful with the doctors from the medical centre taking centre stage, We also worked with the Dargaville Development Board to have another retirement village built in Dargaville. Northland Inc. have now advised that they will proceed with a feasibility study as soon as the Northland Regional Council approves. Coming up we are approaching the Kaipara District Council with a request to form a permanent older persons’ committee whose goal would be to assist the council in any matter that may affect the needs of older people. A request already before Kaipara Grey Power is to get the hydrotherapy pool heated so that older people can exercise in the pool all the year around. Another suggestion is more and better recreation areas with appropriate facilities.

 Kaipara candidates in the recent local body elections for the Northland Regional Council addressed a Greypower meeting. l/r Sarah Kennet, Penny Smart (elected) Rob Stevenson and Mark Vincent.

A Community Support display facility in the Medical Centre has been suggested, containing data and brochures from various health associated groups and organisations. The Medical Centre has agreed and now it is up to the groups to arrange for their displays after the stand has been made. Kaipara Grey Power supports everyone in the community and we welcome any

AUTOS AND MARINE

Often imitated, still unbeaten

SUMMER IS COMING!

 by Andy Bryenton

Honda are no strangers to the ‘sincerest form of flattery’ — other bike makers have been copying their innovations for decades. In fact, if you take a ride through the busy streets of any south-east Asian capital, you’re likely to see many variations on the Honda theme, ranging from those who have simply adopted clever combustion tech through to outright knock-offs of popular models like the ubiquitous Super Cub. Honda’s 200cc and 150cc farm bikes have also had their fair share of imitators, so the shape and lines of the 2016 CTX200 may look somewhat familiar. There’s a reason, however, that this tough little machine has been so often copied — it’s just so hard to beat. That’s not only a comment on its longevity — Honda have been making a bike to fit this segment of the rural market since about the time it replaced the horse. A tough, no-nonsense two-wheeler with simple, hard-to-kill technology is just the thing for scouting the fence-lines, herding and mustering, and the CTX200 brings years of feedback from farmers to a sharp point. A lot of that feedback has been about the other way a real farm bike has to be hard to beat — nature, the elements and hard work can’t wear it down. That’s why the CTX200 is easy to start, with either an electric push button or a handy backup kick lever. It’s why Honda built

it with flexible, hard wearing plastics that won’t shatter at the merest kiss of a gatepost or tractor tyre. And why its simple, single-pot engine has been made for ease of maintenance — air cooled, fed by a tried and tested carburetor system, and willing to go all day in atrocious conditions. Little bits of attention to detail set the CTX200 apart from its imitators as well. Honda have included generous pack racks, with the back one nicely sized for letting farm dogs hitch a ride out to work. They’ve designed a high capacity tank which doesn’t affect the bike’s centre of gravity at low speeds over bumpy terrain, so that their machine can head out at dawn and come in at sunset without fuel stops. They’ve tuned

the 197cc engine to deliver a broad band of torque, knowing that farmers often spend a lot of time in the saddle working slowly along uneven surfaces or bogging through mud. Add in a very reasonable price — both to purchase and to service the frugal fuel bill — and it’s easy to see why Honda’s flagship farm two-wheeler remains ahead of the pack. 

PLAN YOUR SUMMER BUILD Cordless power comes of age  by Andy Bryenton

There was a time when cordless power tools were a ‘second best’ solution — a necessary evil for those working far from the mains. With limited battery life and sluggish performance, they were sometimes even replaced by bulky petrol powered tools for jobs such as fencing or construction. All that has changed in the last decade. The recent Big Boys Toys expo in Auckland was more than a showcase of hot rods and superbikes — it was also a tool chest of ‘toys’ for those in the trades or serious about DIY. Front and centre in this array was a line-up

by several manufacturers of brushless, cordless power equipment, with a smaller profile and more torque than even those devices tethered to a threepin socket. Half-inch drives, massive auger bits and powerful circular saws? No problem for a new generation of 18v and above cordless machines. It all comes down to two innovations in the world of electricals. Brushless motors are on the rise, becoming

 Hard hardware — brushless 18v cordless tools are the new standard in the workshop and on the farm

easier to construct and easier to cool in recent years. These motors do away with brushes contacting an armature, and instead pack in a circular array of magnets, providing more torque per watt, a better power to weight ratio, and less noise and vibration. Limited only by the need to dissipate heat, a good analogy is to think of brushless electric motors as a high-revving twostroke, while old-style brushed motors compare to a plodding old diesel. The second strand of technology which plays to the strengths of cordless tools is battery efficiency. New batteries are slimmer, lighter and hold more charge than ever thanks to lithium-ion construction, developed in part for the burgeoning interest in sustainable power and electric vehicles. Eighteen-volt Liion batteries now tuck into everything

from scorpion saws to coffee makers on the building site, and companies like Hitachi and Makita are leading the way with a bewildering array of tools to take ‘off the grid’. Makita excel at producing woodworking tools and have some interesting add-ons such as an electric bicycle and chainsaw in their range, while Hitachi, as befits the owners of Japan’s most advanced steel mill, have an edge when it comes to metalworking gear without a cord. No matter which way you slice it — or drill it, or shape it — cordless power has now clearly surpassed its limitations, becoming a vital part of the DIY and construction toolkit. While the brute power of some corded implements and air tools still can’t be denied, we may not be too far from a completely batteryoperated future. 

A NEW GENERATION OF TOOLS - A NEW LEVEL OF PERFORMANCE BRUSHLESS: The latest in electric motor tech delivers massive torque from slim line tools that are easy to use.

Buoyant outlook boosts confidence  by Andy Bryenton

It’s no surprise that the Kaipara district’s tradespeople are busy right now — working hard to finish a raft of big building projects before the summer holidays. The building and renovation sectors have been boosted by a very buoyant local real estate market, with our region tipped as ‘hot property’ for investors seeking to leave Auckland. At each end of the market — both retirees with capital realised from the sale of mortgage-free city property, and first-time buyers seeking a foot on the property ladder — the push to seek greener pastures has meant high demand for local real estate professionals. The knock-on effect, as we’ve seen, is a trade sector buzzing with activity. For some, this means stepping into the role of first time property investors, navigating the possible pitfalls and unique opportunities which come with this move. Good advice is key to making the most of property investment as a landlord, with new regulations surrounding smoke alarms, insulation and healthier homes on the horizon if not already here. At a recent seminar for landlords in Dargaville, local real estate agent Jean Johnson covered off all the aspects of owning property as an investment, from inspections to insurance. It’s timely advice, because all signs point to no slowdown any time soon of the rise in regional house prices and

hence the willingness of homeowners to market their biggest asset to a motivated city clientele. Bare land for the placement of relocatable homes or new builds is also a coveted commodity, as the urban discovery of our slice of paradise — along with low interest rates — combine to keep the hammers, saws and paintbrushes of the Kaipara busy. 

Remembering is easy, I do it every day, but missing you is the real heartache that never goes away. I hold you tightly in my heart and there you will stay. My heart is still breaking that much I can truly say, I can’t wait to see you again on some distant day. You are forever in our hearts and thoughts. So hard to put into words how much we love and miss you. Lots of love forever, Mum and Blissett families. Loved by many.
