A fun-filled Kaipara family event is attracting interest nationwide “The Mighty Northern Wairoa Seagull Race is on again and it is shaping up to be a day of oldfashioned fun for the whole family,” says organiser Petrina Mills, who with her husband Greg, started the race four years ago. The successful event is now into its fourth year and is attracting people from throughout the country who favour vintage marine propulsion in the form of British Seagull outboard motors. The race, on November 26, runs from Dargaville up to the Tangiteroria bridge. Fifteen boats took part in the first race, with that number doubling in the past two years. “We started the river race after being inspired by a similar event in the Waikato,” said Petrina. “We kept meaning to go down to the Waikato race and just never got around to it and then we thought, ‘Well, we’ve got our own river — right on our back door, why not give it a go?’ So we did.” Action from last year’s Mighty Northern Wairoa Seagull Race Seagull enthusiasts have travelled from far and wide for the event. outboards took three hours to complete the race and those with ”In fact, there are more people from out of town than there are four-and-a-half horsepower motors took two hours. ‘No confidence’ in council probe

by Paul Campbell

The promise of a full investigation into the handling by the Kaipara District Council of the Mangawhai EcoCare sewage contracts has failed to impress those who have demanded it. The Mangawhai Residents and Ratepayers Association says millions of dollars have ‘gone up in smoke in the mis-management of the scheme’. The council now says it is undertaking two reviews of the wastewater scheme and has “asked staff to undertake a comprehensive examination to find the information needed to verify answers to the questions posed by all stakeholders.”

It has brought a swift response from the ratepayers’ association. “This is completely unacceptable to the association,” said treasurer and spokesman, Bruce Rogan. “We have absolutely no confidence that the people who created this situation can be trusted to investigate it. This does not make any sense.” In a statement from acting council CEO, John Burt, the KDC also said concerns have been expressed that the decision to extend the scope of the Mangawhai Community Wastewater Scheme was not an authorised decision of council.

Chip off the old block

It was a gift for the future and a nod to the past when an eightyear-old kauri tree was planted in Harding Park last weekend. With some of his family looking on, it was settled in its place by Nick Yakas jnr, son of Nick Yakas who first found the noted Yakas tree in Waipoua Forest. Ron Halliday, a man who keeps an eye on Harding Park and former Northern Wairoa Dairy Company workmate of Nick Busy planting — jnr says, “The seedling Nick has Ron Halliday and Nick Yakas jnr planted came from a kauri cone taken from the top branches of the Yakas Tree. Nick senior was a gum digger and is remembered for his ability to climb the big trees. He was the man that found the Yakas tree about 1928 and it was rediscovered some years later. It’s about a two-hour walk to get into it.” That tree is considered to be one of the big four of the Northland forest. “It was great to be the one to do the planting,” Nick jnr said. “And the tree looks to be really good and healthy.” Ron Halliday organised the event, selected the spot, dug the hole and brought in some good soil. Waipoua tree nursery staff members, Davis Paniora and Stephen King, nurtured the cone and watched the seedling grow to its present height of two metres. The Yakas Tree is measured at about seventeen metres to the first branch and the same in girth. A commemorative plaque in Harding Park will eventually be put in place.

Master chef anyone? Cooking classes with a difference are on offer at a Kaipara tourist destination Fran and Ian Farrant took over the reins at Waipoua Lodge 12 months ago, with a firm vision to raise the international profile of the Kauri Coast. “We are working very closely with Footprints Waipoua, Te Roroa at the Waipoua Visitors Centre and also the Kauri Museum to raise the profile of the Kauri Coast on both a national and international level,” said Fran. “This means that we have to offer something that is of a very high standard and also guest-ready, all of the time, which we are doing.” Fran adds that where possible, the lodge uses only local tradespeople and suppliers. The cooking classes will run on Saturday, November 20, and Sunday, November 26. Fran is a predominantly self-taught chef and believes anyone who loves food can become a natural cook. “Eighty percent of our clientele is international but we are trying to grow the domestic market by implementing initiatives like the cooking school. We’ve really focussed on improving the kitchen and the cuisine for our guests and we’ve received wonderful reviews, which is why we want to share this with the locals. I am very much self-taught and that is the whole basis of what I want to do with the cookery school — anybody who loves food and has a sense of what they like can become a natural cook.

“There are a lot of smart tricks that I have picked up along the way and I think my main goal is to get people away from being recipedependent.”

Dargaville High School Wins Top Energy Award for YES Company of the Year Tahi Wai A team of students from the High School have just taken out the Northland Company of the Year award for teams participating in this year’s Young Enterprise Scheme. They have also won the Excellence Awards for Communications and Financial Management. Over 30 teams from 13 secondary schools have been involved this year in the scheme. The challenge is to form a real company and produce a service or product which generates profit. From February to November they have been to workshops, Dragon’s Den presentations, directors’ seminars and the trade fair at Kerikeri. They have also produced a Business Plan and an Annual Report. The members of this fantastic Year 11 company of “Tahi Wai” are Andrew McLaren (Managing Director), Freya-Rose Newman (Marketing and Sales Director), Emma Carruthers (Communications Director), Mia Adams (Operations/Productions Director) and Libby Harding (Finance Director). Their product is bottled water. Initially, there was a huge input of advice and consultation from Oturei Marae and their finance committee. The Marae was intended to be the source of the certified water. However, as a result of a mountain of red tape an alternative source was found. The unique selling point is the use of a biodegradable eco-friendly bottle. This bottle is made from vegetable matter and breaks down

without any contamination in landfill sites after disposal. They have almost sold out of their first production run of 1800 bottles and many retail outlets in the town already have the product on their shelves. The team members have also been regulars at the Dargaville Riverside Market. This is simply a magnificent achievement for these students when you consider that most other teams are students from year 12 or 13 and have class time to do this project. They have worked through lunchtimes and weekends. Sausage sizzles and car washes have provided some cash for their start-up capital. As Regional winners they now go to Wellington on December 1 to compete for the National title. The team would like to acknowledge the contribution to their success from the Oturei Marae. Let’s hope Tahi Wai gets that number one spot next month when they face 16 other Regional finalists in Wellington.

‘No confidence’ in council probe “This is not the case. At a council meeting held on 25 October, 2006 council agreed to extend the scope of the Mangawhai Community Wastewater Scheme. “Council is undertaking two reviews of the (scheme) and has asked staff to undertake a comprehensive examination to find the information needed to verify answers to the questions posed by all stakeholders.” These were “an independent review of the EcoCare rating matters sought by ratepayer representatives from Mangawhai. “Secondly, council staff are also undertaking a review of the whole EcoCare Project from inception to completion. This comprehensive review will cover the project and related issues. The review will include supporting documentation where applicable, and once finished will be considered by council prior to release.” Mr Rogan said the ratepayers stance was that “there must be an independent review — not one carried out by elected councillors or appointed staff.”

Hospices throughout New Zealand have embarked on a quirky new campaign to raise awareness of their Hospice shops. Hospices rely heavily on their shops to help raise much needed funds to ensure the services they provide remain free to patients and their families. The Give It Up campaign has two phases — the first involves encouraging people to clean out their wardrobe and donate designer and well known labelled clothing for their 2011 Fashion Collection. Hospice Kaipara Inc has one Hospice Shop located in Dargaville. Hospice retail manager, Jayne Walker, says businesses are being encouraged to motivate their staff to all bring in a piece of pre-loved designer or top label clothing, jewellery or an accessory. Hospice Shop, Pennies From Heaven can supply businesses with bags and posters to place in their staff room or alternatively individuals can drop off clothing at their local Hospice shop. “It’s the perfect time to clean out your Pennies From Heaven — Dargaville’s Hospice shop wardrobe, the sun is shining and summer is almost here. Our Hospice shops will be delighted to take your pre-loved designer or top label item off your hands.” The campaign starts on 7 November with clothing being collected for up to two weeks. ...by refreshing your logo, your Phase two begins on 21 November and this stationery, your sales brochures, & flyers as well as your signage. is all about getting into your local Hospice shop We can help you make the to see what they have on offer following the difference that will make your influx of designer and top label donations. River race making an impact “I eventually did the Waikato race with my seven-year-old son and we were in the boat for seven hours but he had a ball and drove most of the way. It’s a perfect day for kids, anyone under 15 just needs to have an adult with them in the boat. “There is a registration fee of $35, but any money we make goes back into prizes and donations. One year we gave a $1,000 to the rescue helicopter.” Petrina says the seagull outboard was one of the first outboard motors ever built but they have become rather redundant now. “There’s hundreds of these motors just sitting in people’s sheds. The Mightly Northern Wairoa Seagull Race will start at the Dargaville Boating Club and conclude at Tangiteroria bridge, where there will be prizegiving and a sausage sizzle on the bank. On the day several other bigger boats will also be on the water to assist people. For more information phone Petrina on 09 439 7746.

NOVEMBER 9 - 2011

This is a series of regular articles keeping you informed of happenings on our harbour today, and from bygone days — truly the ‘Jewel of the Kaipara’.

Guarding the Kaipara Coast by Paul Campbell On an average day in New Zealand the volunteers who make up a vital lifesaving and emergency service in our marine environment — our Coastguard — sends out 10 rescue crews, which is an astonishing 3,500 incidents every year. More than 5,500, people, on average, are helped out of danger on the water. Now, on the Kaipara, rescue service operations for the North Kaipara coastguard have taken a quantum leap forward. A dedicated radio repeater has been sited above Tinopai, to carry lifesaving messages into dark spots around the harbour. It’s a facility which was a godsend at Labour weekend, when a Dargaville launch caught fire, and its occupants were swiftly rescued. Tinopai coastguard veteran, Allan Crabb, operates his 30 foot cutter, Whasang, with two other local boats on standby. “I’ve been 18 years with coastguard, a founder member, and ran the radio service from Tinopai before the redoubtable Dorothy Quaife took over,” he said. “We always had radio blackspots and boaties complained that when they were sheltering under the cliffs on the south side of the Kaipara, they had no radio or cellphone coverage and had to up-anchor and make

The 30-foot Tinopai coastguard cutter, Whasang

their way out in sometimes rough conditions to get an important communication out. “It took a few years, but now we have a stand-alone repeater which covers these areas on Channel 61. But then today, we are going to the repeater site to test our radio link to Channel 66. This will mean boats will have instant harbour-wide VHF communication at the touch of a button.” Kaipara coastguard operations fall to five bases — at Tinopai, Pahi, Ruawai, Te Kopuru and Dargaville. “Ideally we have three boats at each location to call on, manned by local volunteers,” Allan added. In the case of Whasang, Allan calls on a crew roster which includes Bobby Smith, Craig Reid, Rob Kersey, Walter Smith and Diane McCracken. “We have all gone through the Boating Education Courses — victim recovery, advanced marine medical, and towing techniques among them. The cutter is capable of 30 knots so we can get to where we are needed in a hurry.” But while the Kaipara is blessed with

dedicated volunteers, and state-of-the-art communications, there is still a big responsibility on those who go down to the sea in small — or big — boats. Coastguard urges boaties to make safety checks a priority as the summer season gets under way. “Adhering to a few simple safety procedures will help make this summer’s boating season a safe and enjoyable one,” says Coastguard New Zealand president, Colin Small. “Given that many vessels will have been out of action over winter, it is important that skippers keep safety on top of their mind, check all equipment and make sure the vessel is seaworthy by carrying out regular maintenance checks. “Having a working marine VHF radio, flares or locator beacons is especially important because without them, it is impossible to alert us if you get into difficulty.” Coastguard runs a series of public boating safety courses including practical powerboat training, day skipper courses and marine VHF radio training. An absolutely fabulous celebration The revamped Ab Fab Tokatoka Bar and Café, previously known as Tokatoka Tavern, has celebrated one year of being back in business with a party for their patrons. Co-owner, Catherine Laurie, says the evening went very well and attracted a good crowd. “We had a great turnout — despite the rugby world cup and people being away for the long weekend. The band was excellent and I’ve been fielding calls ever since from people who want to get hold of them.”

Catherine’s daughters, Amelia (left), and Sophie, working at the bar

Catherine, a mother of five with a farm to run with husband, Jeff, says the last 12 months have been a steep learning curve but they are looking ahead. “The garden bar is open and we plan to have it all up and running for the summer. We’d like to host jazz bands on the weekend and also some daytime functions. The iconic ‘Tokatoka Tavern’ was built in 1922 at the base of Tokatoka Peak, overlooking the Kaipara Harbour and at the time, was a busy stop for river traffic. It is still a popular stop but these days, attracts tourists, motorists and local farmers, rather than traffic from the river.

The World Cup is over — anyone for tennis?

Almost a century on, and the Dargaville Tennis Club is still going strong The Rugby World Cup 2011 is well behind us and now it is time to focus on summer sports, such as tennis.Dargaville Tennis Club has been in existence for almost a century and the club is now open for warmer months to both juniors and seniors. “We have a tournament that runs until the end of the tennis season which is about 20 weeks and usually involves two rounds,” says tennis club captain, Lynley Clements. “So far, about 14 senior teams have registered and there are four in each team. “At the moment, we have an A and B grade but if there are a lot of new players starting, there is actually a cup available for a C grade. If there is enough interest, we hope to get the C grade going this year.” Games are played over two evenings, with B grade meeting at the Station Road courts on Monday and the A grade meeting on Tuesday. Juniors meet after school on Monday evenings, with coach and junior manager, Debbie Suckling. Five to eight year olds meet first at 3.15pm, followed by the eight to 12-year-old age group and the older children after that. “I started up the junior tennis last year and I think it will continue to grow and grow,” says

Junior players ready for action

Debbie Suckling. “In the past, there hasn’t been much junior tennis and we would really like to grow the club — last year we had about 16 children playing, so we’ll see where we go. “I think it’s great to have this in Dargaville and after we get the coaching side of things underway it would be good to get the club days going on Saturday mornings.” New junior members can register their interest with Debbie on 09 439 5533 or text 021 871 791. New senior members can call Lynley Clements on 09 439 8160 or Ewan Cornor on 09 439 7565.

A writing and directing first

Writer and director David Sims, offers up a pantomime of Romeo and Juliet for Otamatea Repertory Theatre’s latest production. The play is David’s first dramatic script and for any aspiring actor, singer, director or writer, pantomimes are a great way to start out. David grew up around New York City, graduated from university and worked for years as a journalist in Istanbul. He married a New Zealander and together they ran a coffee shop on the Turkish Mediterranean Coast before moving to Mangawhai in 2008. The couple have three children and the family is enjoying life in New Zealand. In addition to journalism, David has worked in advertising, as a speech writer, has written an unpublished novel and currently works as an internet business writer. “I’ve always been fascinated with theatre and I joined the Otamatea Repertory Theatre for its production of M*A*S*H,” says David. “Then, one thing led to another and I found myself getting more and more involved and I also joined in with their production of Annie. “I was surprised when Peter Flower suggested I help write and direct the Christmas pantomime. Americans don’t grow up with pantos — I’d only been to one in my life, at the British Consulate in Istanbul. However, I saw DVDs of pantomimes that ORT had done in the past so I just went from there. It’s been a great learning experience and

Further delay ensues through full provision of water not yet made in regard to a supply of water for the engine. This week’s winner is tireless community volunteer Gwen Aldersley, who gives her time to the Save the Children shop in Dargaville’s main street in an effort to help those less fortunate. Gwen is also to be found in other community opportunity shops around town devoting her assistance to many worthy causes, as well as finding time for chaplaincy duties at the local hospital! We’d like to take this opportunity to say thanks to Gwen, and to all those other volunteers who put in hours of work to keep our beloved local charitable shops open — do stop by and have a look at what’s on offer. You can be assured that your money is being spent making people’s lives that little bit better! Each month we’ll be selecting a worthy nominee to receive a big THANKS from the people of the Kaipara, a little recognition, and some care and attention from the professional stylists at Halo Hair Design in Dargaville. Their kind contribution of artistry and skill allows us to reward our ‘Community Angels’ with a beautiful new hairstyle — a token of the whole district’s appreciation from our local style professionals! If you know of someone deserving of some TLC and an accolade for their hard work, please email us at info@thelifestyler.co.nz and tell us about their achievements! We’d love to offer them our thanks and a little something back, courtesy of the Kaipara Lifestyler and Halo Hair Design.

An amazing race in Maungaturoto The Amazing Race Maungaturoto is an exciting initiative being organised by the town’s newly formed Residents Association. Vice president, Daniel Alcock, and secretary, Nyree Alcock, are at the helm of the project, which will see participants racing around Maungaturoto, solving clues and completing tasks. The event promises to be a great day of fun for the whole family, rival community groups, businesses and friends are encouraged to challenge each other to be the winners of the first Amazing Race Maungaturoto. The tempting first

prize is a scenic flight over the picturesque Kaipara Harbour, donated by Ralph Schultz Helicopters, and there are second, third and spot prizes up for grabs too. A car is essential for the event on Saturday, November 19, with registrations starting at 9am and the race begins at 10am sharp. Preferably however, Nyree would like people to register before the day by calling 09 431 8462 or come along nice and early. The registration fee is $35 and all proceeds will go towards Maungaturoto projects.

Victory adds to the legend

A brief look through the offerings on Trademe will bring up a haul of rugby related treasures in the aftermath of New Zealand’s historic victory at RWC 2011. It seems that every kind of item associated with the All Blacks’ victory has gained the status of an important historical artefact, with the price tag to go with it!

making this a living, breathing piece of RWC history. What Ford and the All Blacks created was a limited run of poised, powerful and striking small cars with the attitude of a champion and credentials to back up their styling.

Some of the memorabilia on offer is likely to appreciate in value markedly — other items are a more dubious investment. But there is one souvenir of this year’s epic tournament which is sure to become a piece of history.

Now that the William Webb-Ellis trophy is safe in New Zealand hands, this exceptional little car is set to become even more of a collector’s item. And at $35,990 it costs mere cents more than a signed All Blacks jersey — a piece of memorabilia which doesn’t have anything near the torque or acceleration!

Ford’s AB35 project was participated in by the All Blacks themselves, and the team had hands on input into the reworking of the striking black Fiesta. Sound system, body kit, paint, and even the ferocious Mountune tuning setup were honed by the AB’s,

Lindsay West at Dargaville Ford has one of the last of a handful of these cars available new, but you’d better be quick to catch a test drive. As with most strictly limited pieces of sporting glory, this one won’t stay still for long!

Not long ago it was only one of the best small cars in the world NOW it’s a priceless collector’s item The awesome AB35 FIESTA – designed hands-on by the world cup winning 2011 All Blacks. Only ONE left of 35 ever made

Market looking for co-ordinator

Wellsford Country Show is back After a three year hiatus the Wellsford Country Show is back and it promises to be bigger and even better than before. With a focus on keeping it ‘local’, the show will take on the traditional third Saturday in November at Centennial Park. “Two shows ago, our committee decided to move away from the A & P show format and create our own community event,” says Jo Wood, who is organising the show with Lynette Gubb and a small committee. “It’s still under the A & P umbrella but this way we can cater it more to the community’s desires. “We’ll still have the beef and highland sections, the calf and lamb sections and the pony club but there is also a big emphasis on community groups both performing and fundraising. “There’ll be a local foods section and we have some really interesting food this year, such as award-winning sausages, berry ice cream and traditional Maori food, as well as the usual hot dogs and chips. We’ve really been working on getting a good variety. “Our entertainment stage is the other big thing. There’ll be half hour slots for the local entertainers to perform, with kapa haka, singing, miming and bands. The entertainment stage will close with Whangarei’s cover band, Tempist Fujit, in the afternoon. Other attractions at Wellsford Country Show on November 19 include a St John Ambulance display, a Wellsford Fire Brigade demonstration and woodchopping. The usual trade stands with the tractors, quad bikes and mowers will also be present along with heaps of free activities for kids. For more information see www.wellsfordcountryshow.com.

The Riverside Produce Market has just celebrated its one year anniversary and has grown to such a size that it now needs a market co-ordinator. The successful Dargaville market is held every Thursday at the AD Focus car park and attracts both stall holders and customers from throughout the district. This part-time market co-ordinator role is for eight hours every week and would suit an organised person with great people skills. Any questions or enquiries should be directed to Darlene Market organiser, Debra van Leeuwerden, Lang on 09 439 1597. hamper winner, Les Clifford and Community Constable, Ian Anderson who drew the lucky ticket Organisers of the consistently vibrant market celebrated their birthday with a party for the whole town, with extra entertainment, spot prizes and a gigantic grocery hamper to be won. Les Clifford, who visits the market every week, was the lucky winner of the $500 grocery Whangarei Girls’ High School hamper and he says he was humbled and a little embarrassed when his ticket was drawn. “It was just a spur of the moment thing — I Mon 28 Nov just went to get a cauliflower and bought a few This is a full-day programme (8.45am – other bits and pieces. Les says that a lot of people have benefitted P: (09) 430 4460 from his hamper win, including his folks in the South Island, neighbours and workmates. It’s the supporters who make this contest king

This landmark commemorative book by Paul Campbell tells the story of the Albertlanders’ arrival and settling of the Kaipara area, and features many of Harold Marsh’s photographs that have been painstakingly restored.

It’s that time of year again — anglers and boaties around the Kaiapara district are gearing up for the annual King of the Kaipara fishing contest — an annual tradition held at picturesque Kelly’s Bay As always, it’s the good people from Nola Sports who are behind the King of the Kaipara, but this year contest convenor and well-known local fisherman Mike Nola wants to thank in advance the supporters who make the competition such a big event on the Northland fishing calendar. When the King of the Kaipara kicks off on December 3, it’s these names who will be there behind every angler.

Kaipara Marine Services Nigel Tonkin from Kaipara Marine Services will be out on the water when the King of the Kaipara gets underway, providing water taxi services to all competitors and spectators. But his work toward the big day has already started. That’s because Nigel is the man to see for boat repairs and upgrades in Dargaville, and canny anglers know that along with hooks and rods their boat is the best tool at their disposal to catch the big one. For safety and top performance it pays to take care of those repair and service tasks early, and Nigel has all of them covered. For more than 13 years he’s been working on marine electronics, outboards and even trailers. Below you’ll see an example of his

work — a complete navigation, radar, fishfinding and communications system fitted to Mike Nola’s own Bluefin. With full certification and accreditation, Nigel Tonkin is the man who smart fishermen and boaties are turning to when they want to prepare their boats for the coming season.

Baty Thomas Engineering Working closely with Nigel and Mike on the Bluefin were another well respected local business — Baty Thomas Engineering. While some know them for their high-octane West Coast Catz dual-hulled speedsters, Baty Thomas are experts at all kinds of fabrication and repair, with a particular emphasis on marine aluminium. Skill in working with this lightweight and tough metal has made them a byword for maritime design and repairs — for example, the Bluefin’s upper superstructure was designed, built and fitted entirely by the Baty Thomas team. Anglers who want to undertake upgrades to their vessels or even those who wish to commission an entire new craft would be well advised to talk to Baty Thomas in Dargaville — they know the marine industry comprehensively, and they’ve been behind the Kaipara fishing scene since 2002.

All new from bullbar to towbar by our motoring correspondent There are few sights as iconic in the Kiwi countryside as a big red ATV quad, usually laden down with fencing gear, weed sprayer, the faithful farm dog and the odd bale of hay or two. And there’s a good reason why this stereotype is known to even the most determinedly urban New Zealander — Honda quad bikes work hard and go the distance. That’s why when it came to designing the brand new TRX500, the engineers at Honda had a bold decision to make. It would have been easy to rest on their laurels and tweak small stylistic cues on this popular middle-of-therange farm machine. But Honda thought that this approach would be just a little too easy, and so they began from the ground up, crafting a whole new machine for 2012. That’s no mean feat — retooling their factory to handle a whole new cooling system, chassis, suspension, drivetrain and panels were quite an undertaking. But the jewel in the crown of this back-to-the-drawing-board renaissance of the TRX is a whole new power plant — a 475cc liquid cooled overhead valve single cylinder heart which pumps out ten percent more power and six percent more torque than last year’s model. Considering the 2011 Hondas were never accused of being underpowered, this is a real coup. So is the eminently clever mono-shock

rear suspension, which adjusts better to load requirements and terrain. Ground clearance has been improved, as has every detail down to the seating — the new TRX500 is a more comfortable place to spend a day of riding and working, with a more ergonomic cushioning system to stop aches and pains developing, even after scrambling through gnarly terrain. With so much going on in the engineering department, it’s almost an afterthought to mention that the 2012 TRX500 is a fine looking machine as well — thoroughly facelifted and upgraded to meet the demands of the modern market. All in all, it’s a machine that’s worthy of careful consideration — a new incarnation of the big red quad that’s become a Kiwi farming cornerstone.

NORTHLAND

NOVEMBER 9 - 2011

The name that does it all in agriculture by our rural correspondent With the bad weather easing off and a long hot summer predicted by meteorologists, farmers around the Kaipara district are taking the opportunity to tackle traditional spring chores — albeit a little later than usual. Muddy races and tracks need resurfacing, drainage needs to be sorted, fields harrowed and prepared, and that’s before considering any upgrades and additions to infrastructure such as dams, ponds and feed pads, milking sheds or barns. It’s also a time of year when you’ll see fertiliser trucks hard at work guaranteeing a strong crop for the next harvest. All of these tasks require specialised machinery and skills, many of which are either too expensive or high-maintenance for the individual farmer to invest in. Thankfully at this busy time of the year there is one name which covers most aspects of agricultural contracting — and that name is Williamson. With their own quarry and a fleet of trucks, excavators and specialised equipment for a wide range of tasks, the team at Williamson Agriculture find no job too big or small. Whether it’s digging and levelling, bulldozing or bulk haulage, they can offer a competitive price and promise a job well done. Of special consideration in the Kaipara area is their trench digging and drainage capability, providing water table management which can improve productivity on otherwise boggy ground. Williamson Agriculture also work closely with Spreading Northland, suppliers of Ravensdown fertilisers and operators of a modern fleet of GPS guided spreader trucks. The satellite-based navigation systems in Spreading Northland’s trucks make for even coverage and no doubletracking, reducing fertiliser costs while guaranteeing the best yield. Between them, these two local companies have built a reputation in the Kaipara for being able to do just about anything around the farm,

with all the machinery at their disposal to cut any job down to size. This spring they anticipate an upsurge in demand for dams to combat a possible summer drought, and bigger, more efficient effluent ponds as part of the upcoming district plan. Both of these projects require some heavy gear and experience to be done right

Anyway, tha Boss is a bit concerned about how much all this lection promisis gonna cost eh? “They already spendin’ munny they havin’t got, like drunken bluddy sailors, eh dog? “Ya see, that Goff bloke reckins he can changa whole ekonimy just by makin’ us save more munny ina Kiwi bank, and then pinch our munny when we sella run-off block, ora lifestyle

Wen’ ya work it all out, his idea’s gunna cost bloody billions. So where’s it gunna come from?” Well, tha Boss was still goin’ on about all this cost, an it got too komlicated fer me to unnerstand. But then I herd a real nasty bit o’ policy. That Goff gunna raise the penshin age! Now that mite not wurri tha Boss, cos he’s bluddy near ova tha hill, an’ he’ll get a penshin wen he’s 65 in a year or so frum now. But it jus’ so happins that I’m five year old sinse I wuz born ona farm in Hawke’s Bay. But, wot’s tha bet tha Boss will vote bloody National, but stick ta tha Labour penshin age plan where I come inta it? Yep. I can just see it now. There I’ll be ova the bluddy hill — and I means that literally. I’ll be tha equivalint age of 70 ana Boss will be makin’ me pen sheep afta runnin’ them up and down sum dog trial hill somewhere. Where’s that nice Winstin Peters bloke? Sharlene reckin’s he looks out fer us oldies . . . see ya atta polls, not. Billy

Sun energy for dairy Dairy farm overheads dramatically reduced with new technology For dairy farmers, one of the biggest regular expenses of running a prosperous business is the cost of heating water. To effectively wash down milking plant and apparatus temperatures as high as 85 degrees Celsius are recommended — enough to put paid to dangerous bacteria. The traditional means of heating the large volumes of water necessary to undertake regular cleaning has been the same as that used in older homes — an electric cylinder. This technology is now more than a century old, and it just doesn’t make sense in this age of high power costs, especially in agricultural business where every cent counts. Thankfully Northland is rich in a resource which can guarantee buckets of hot water for an outlay of mere cents in the dollar — sunlight. Farmers around the country are turning to solar hot water heating as an idea which has come of age, with new technology offering far better results than the systems of last century. In Dargaville, your local solar hot water experts are Plumbing and Heating, suppliers of Nova solar hot water systems designed for the dairy industry. These superior systems produce on average 6,000 kilowatt hours of free energy — which can easily equate to one third of a farm’s entire hot water heating bill. Imagine that money being put back into productive projects — into pasture management, livestock or machinery — or even just into your pocket!

The core of the Nova system is an innovative solar collector which can operate for decades without major maintenance. The power of the sun accomplishes the ‘hard work’ of taking mains temperature water up from about 3 degrees to over 60, with a boost added from a backup source on cloudy or cold days. The majority of the cost of heating water is therefore taken over by the free power of the sun — and it’s surprising just how much energy is trapped, even on cloudy days. The team at Plumbing and Heating are dedicated to bringing the best new technology to the rural business community, and this latest innovation makes sound economic sense before one even considers the great benefits to the environment inherent in solar power. Nova, creators of solar hot water heaters specifically designed for Kiwi farms, have provided a calculator on their website which can help you work out just how much you’ll save. You’ll find that in some instances the small cost of installation is recouped within a very short period of time, leaving you with many years of free solar energy ahead. Visit Plumbing and Heating or go to www.novaenergy.co.nz/dairy-solar-water-heating for more information and a free on-site measure and quote.

NOVEMBER 9 - 2011

Carrying on a grand tradition of service When Ray White first opened his business in 1902, it was with little more than a set of firmly held ideals and a dream. From that old railway shed in Crow’s Nest, Australia, those ideals took his company from obscurity to international fame, and his name from that of a talented auctioneer and salesman to a byword for real estate itself. Starting out, Ray White turned his energy and creative spark to many trades — he saw the opportunity in industries as varied as livestock, insurance, land sales, machinery and even the earliest automobiles. The very first Ford sold in the Crow’s Nest region, West Queensland, was sold by Ray White, and his early newspaper adverts show a sense of irreverence and humour which was uncommon in the early days of the 20th century. Ray’s values of honesty, hard work, creativity and fairness saw him develop a reputation as a real estate professional to be trusted – he was respected even by his rivals and competitors, and he gave back to his community, especially looking after his customers when the hard times of the Great Depression came. When he made the move to Brisbane at the age of 46 he had to start all over again, and those same values saw him through as the company grew and his sons took their place at Ray’s side. Today Ray White is one of the largest names in real estate, covering Australasia and parts of South East Asia and dealing in commercial, rural and residential property. From one corrugated iron shed the business has grown to embrace hundreds of local branches, of which Dargaville’s own Jean Johnson Realty is the latest. Jean, Audrey, Lee and the team join the fourth generation of Ray White’s family in offering the highest level of professionalism to buyers and sellers alike — carrying Ray’s vision and values into a new century with pride.
