A fun-filled Kaipara family event is attracting interest nationwide “The Mighty Northern Wairoa Seagull Race is on again and it is shaping up to be a day of oldfashioned fun for the whole family,” says organiser Petrina Mills, who with her husband Greg, started the race four years ago. The successful event is now into its fourth year and is attracting people from throughout the country who favour vintage marine propulsion in the form of British Seagull outboard motors. The race, on November 26, runs from Dargaville up to the Tangiteroria bridge. ‘No conﬁdence’ in council probe

The promise of a full investigation into the handling by the Kaipara District Council of the Mangawhai EcoCare sewage contracts has failed to impress those who have demanded it. The Mangawhai Residents and Ratepayers Association says millions of dollars have ‘gone up in smoke in the mis-management of the scheme’. The council now says it is undertaking two reviews of the wastewater scheme and has “asked staff to undertake a comprehensive examination to ﬁnd the information needed to verify answers to the questions posed by all stakeholders.”

It has brought a swift response from the ratepayers’ association. “This is completely unacceptable to the association,” said treasurer and spokesman, Bruce Rogan. “We have absolutely no conﬁdence that the people who created this situation can be trusted to investigate it. This does not make any sense.” In a statement from acting council CEO, John Burt, the KDC also said concerns have been expressed that the decision to extend the scope of the Mangawhai Community Wastewater Scheme was not an authorised decision of council.

Chip off the old block

It was a gift for the future and a nod to the past when an eightyear-old kauri tree was planted in Harding Park last weekend. With some of his family looking on, it was settled in its place by Nick Yakas jnr, son of Nick Yakas who ﬁrst found the noted Yakas tree in Waipoua Forest. Ron Halliday, a man who keeps an eye on Harding Park and former Northern Wairoa Dairy Company workmate of Nick Busy planting — jnr says, “The seedling Nick has Ron Halliday and Nick Yakas jnr planted came from a kauri cone taken from the top branches of the Yakas Tree. Nick senior was a gum digger and is remembered for his ability to climb the big trees. He was the man that found the Yakas tree about 1928 and it was rediscovered some years later. It’s about a two-hour walk to get into it.” That tree is considered to be one of the big four of the Northland forest. “It was great to be the one to do the planting,” Nick jnr said. “And the tree looks to be really good and healthy.” Ron Halliday organised the event, selected the spot, dug the hole and brought in some good soil. Waipoua tree nursery staff members, Davis Paniora and Stephen King, nurtured the cone and watched the seedling grow to its present height of two metres. The Yakas Tree is measured at about seventeen metres to the ﬁrst branch and the same in girth. A commemorative plaque in Harding Park will eventually be put in place.

Cooking classes with a difference are on offer at a Kaipara tourist destination Fran and Ian Farrant took over the reins at Waipoua Lodge 12 months ago, with a firm vision to raise the international profile of the Kauri Coast. “We are working very closely with Footprints Waipoua, Te Roroa at the Waipoua Visitors Centre and also the Kauri Museum to raise the profile of the Kauri Coast on both a national and international level,” said Fran. “This means that we have to offer something that is of a very high standard and also guest-ready, all of the time, which we are doing.” Fran adds that where possible, the lodge uses only local tradespeople and suppliers. The cooking classes will run on Saturday, November 20, and Sunday, November 26. Fran is a predominantly self-taught chef and believes anyone who loves food can become a natural cook. “Eighty percent of our clientele is international but we are trying to grow the domestic market by implementing initiatives like the cooking school. We’ve really focussed on improving the kitchen and the cuisine for our guests and we’ve received wonderful reviews, which is why we want to share this with the locals. I am very much self-taught and that is the whole basis of what I want to do with the cookery school — anybody who loves food and has a sense of what they like can become a natural cook.

“There are a lot of smart tricks that I have picked up along the way and I think my main goal is to get people away from being recipedependent.”

Dargaville High School Wins Top Energy Award for YES Company of the Year Tahi Wai A team of students from the High School have just taken out the Northland Company of the Year award for teams participating in this year’s Young Enterprise Scheme. They have also won the Excellence Awards for Communications and Financial Management. Over 30 teams from 13 secondary schools have been involved this year in the scheme. The challenge is to form a real company and produce a service or product which generates profit. From February to November they have been to workshops, Dragon’s Den presentations, directors’ seminars and the trade fair at Kerikeri. They have also produced a Business Plan and an Annual Report. The members of this fantastic Year 11 company of “Tahi Wai” are Andrew McLaren (Managing Director), Freya-Rose Newman (Marketing and Sales Director), Emma Carruthers (Communications Director), Mia Adams (Operations/Productions Director) and Libby Harding (Finance Director). Their product is bottled water. Initially, there was a huge input of advice and consultation from Oturei Marae and their finance committee. The Marae was intended to be the source of the certified water. However, as a result of a mountain of red tape an alternative source was found. The unique selling point is the use of a biodegradable eco-friendly bottle. This bottle is made from vegetable matter and breaks down

without any contamination in landfill sites after disposal. They have almost sold out of their first production run of 1800 bottles and many retail outlets in the town already have the product on their shelves. The team members have also been regulars at the Dargaville Riverside Market. This is simply a magnificent achievement for these students when you consider that most other teams are students from year 12 or 13 and have class time to do this project. They have worked through lunchtimes and weekends. Sausage sizzles and car washes have provided some cash for their start-up capital. As Regional winners they now go to Wellington on December 1 to compete for the National title. The team would like to acknowledge the contribution to their success from the Oturei Marae. Let’s hope Tahi Wai gets that number one spot next month when they face 16 other Regional finalists in Wellington.

At a council meeting held on 25 October, 2006 council agreed to extend the scope of the Mangawhai Community Wastewater Scheme. “Council is undertaking two reviews of the (scheme) and has asked staff to undertake a comprehensive examination to find the information needed to verify answers to the questions posed by all stakeholders.” These were “an independent review of the EcoCare rating matters sought by ratepayer representatives from Mangawhai. “Secondly, council staff are also undertaking a review of the whole EcoCare Project from inception to completion. This comprehensive review will cover the project and related issues. The review will include supporting documentation where applicable, and once finished will be considered by council prior to release.” Mr Rogan said the ratepayers stance was that “there must be an independent review — not one carried out by elected councillors or appointed staff.”

Hospices throughout New Zealand have embarked on a quirky new campaign to raise awareness of their Hospice shops. Hospices rely heavily on their shops to help raise much needed funds to ensure the services they provide remain free to patients and their families. The Give It Up campaign has two phases — the ﬁrst involves encouraging people to clean out their wardrobe and donate designer and well known labelled clothing for their 2011 Fashion Collection. River race making an impact “I eventually did the Waikato race with my seven-year-old son and we were in the boat for seven hours but he had a ball and drove most of the way. It’s a perfect day for kids, anyone under 15 just needs to have an adult with them in the boat. “There is a registration fee of $35, but any money we make goes back into prizes and donations. One year we gave a $1,000 to the rescue helicopter.” Petrina says the seagull outboard was one of the ﬁrst outboard motors ever built but they have become rather redundant now. “There’s hundreds of these motors just sitting in people’s sheds. The Mightly Northern Wairoa Seagull Race will start at the Dargaville Boating Club and conclude at Tangiteroria bridge, where there will be prizegiving and a sausage sizzle on the bank. This is a series of regular articles keeping you informed of happenings on our harbour today, and from bygone days — truly the ‘Jewel of the Kaipara’.

Guarding the Kaipara Coast by Paul Campbell On an average day in New Zealand the volunteers who make up a vital lifesaving and emergency service in our marine environment — our Coastguard — sends out 10 rescue crews, which is an astonishing 3,500 incidents every year. More than 5,500, people, on average, are helped out of danger on the water. Now, on the Kaipara, rescue service operations for the North Kaipara coastguard have taken a quantum leap forward. A dedicated radio repeater has been sited above Tinopai, to carry lifesaving messages into dark spots around the harbour. It’s a facility which was a godsend at Labour weekend, when a Dargaville launch caught ﬁre, and its occupants were swiftly rescued. Tinopai coastguard veteran, Allan Crabb, operates his 30 foot cutter, Whasang, with two other local boats on standby. “I’ve been 18 years with coastguard, a founder member, and ran the radio service from Tinopai before the redoubtable Dorothy Quaife took over,” he said. “We always had radio blackspots and boaties complained that when they were sheltering under the cliffs on the south side of the Kaipara, they had no radio or cellphone coverage and had to up-anchor and make

their way out in sometimes rough conditions to get an important communication out. “It took a few years, but now we have a stand-alone repeater which covers these areas on Channel 61. But then today, we are going to the repeater site to test our radio link to Channel 66. This will mean boats will have instant harbour-wide VHF communication at the touch of a button.” Kaipara coastguard operations fall to ﬁve bases — at Tinopai, Pahi, Ruawai, Te Kopuru and Dargaville. “Ideally we have three boats at each location to call on, manned by local volunteers,” Allan added. In the case of Whasang, Allan calls on a crew roster which includes Bobby Smith, Craig Reid, Rob Kersey, Walter Smith and Diane McCracken. “We have all gone through the Boating Education Courses — victim recovery, advanced marine medical, and towing techniques among them. The cutter is capable of 30 knots so we can get to where we are needed in a hurry.” But while the Kaipara is blessed with

dedicated volunteers, and state-of-the-art communications, there is still a big responsibility on those who go down to the sea in small — or big — boats. Coastguard urges boaties to make safety checks a priority as the summer season gets under way. “Adhering to a few simple safety procedures will help make this summer’s boating season a safe and enjoyable one,” says Coastguard New Zealand president, Colin Small. “Given that many vessels will have been out of action over winter, it is important that skippers keep safety on top of their mind, check all equipment and make sure the vessel is seaworthy by carrying out regular maintenance checks. “Having a working marine VHF radio, ﬂares or locator beacons is especially important because without them, it is impossible to alert us if you get into difﬁculty.” Coastguard runs a series of public boating safety courses including practical powerboat training, day skipper courses and marine VHF radio training. An absolutely fabulous celebration The revamped Ab Fab Tokatoka Bar and Café, previously known as Tokatoka Tavern, has celebrated one year of being back in business with a party for their patrons. Co-owner, Catherine Laurie, says the evening went very well and attracted a good crowd. “We had a great turnout — despite the rugby world cup and people being away for the long weekend. The band was excellent and I’ve been ﬁelding calls ever since from people who want to get hold of them.”

Catherine, a mother of five with a farm to run with husband, Jeff, says the last 12 months have been a steep learning curve but they are looking ahead. “The garden bar is open and we plan to have it all up and running for the summer. We’d like to host jazz bands on the weekend and also some daytime functions. The iconic ‘Tokatoka Tavern’ was built in 1922 at the base of Tokatoka Peak, overlooking the Kaipara Harbour and at the time, was a busy stop for river traffic. It is still a popular stop but these days, attracts tourists, motorists and local farmers, rather than traffic from the river.

The World Cup is over — anyone for tennis?

Almost a century on, and the Dargaville Tennis Club is still going strong The Rugby World Cup 2011 is well behind us and now it is time to focus on summer sports, such as tennis.Dargaville Tennis Club has been in existence for almost a century and the club is now open for warmer months to both juniors and seniors. “We have a tournament that runs until the end of the tennis season which is about 20 weeks and usually involves two rounds,” says tennis club captain, Lynley Clements. “So far, about 14 senior teams have registered and there are four in each team. “At the moment, we have an A and B grade but if there are a lot of new players starting, there is actually a cup available for a C grade. If there is enough interest, we hope to get the C grade going this year.” Games are played over two evenings, with B grade meeting at the Station Road courts on Monday and the A grade meeting on Tuesday. Juniors meet after school on Monday evenings, with coach and junior manager, Debbie Suckling. Five to eight year olds meet ﬁrst at 3.15pm, followed by the eight to 12-year-old age group and the older children after that. “I started up the junior tennis last year and I think it will continue to grow and grow,” says

Debbie Suckling. “In the past, there hasn’t been much junior tennis and we would really like to grow the club — last year we had about 16 children playing, so we’ll see where we go. “I think it’s great to have this in Dargaville and after we get the coaching side of things underway it would be good to get the club days going on Saturday mornings.” New junior members can register their interest with Debbie on 09 439 5533 or text 021 871 791. A writing and directing ﬁrst

Writer and director David Sims, offers up a pantomime of Romeo and Juliet for Otamatea Repertory Theatre’s latest production. The play is David’s ﬁrst dramatic script and for any aspiring actor, singer, director or writer, pantomimes are a great way to start out. David grew up around New York City, graduated from university and worked for years as a journalist in Istanbul. He married a New Zealander and together they ran a coffee shop on the Turkish Mediterranean Coast before moving to Mangawhai in 2008. The couple have three children and the family is enjoying life in New Zealand. In addition to journalism, David has worked in advertising, as a speech writer, has written an unpublished novel and currently works as an internet business writer. “I’ve always been fascinated with theatre and I joined the Otamatea Repertory Theatre for its production of M*A*S*H,” says David. “Then, one thing led to another and I found myself getting more and more involved and I also joined in with their production of Annie. “I was surprised when Peter Flower suggested I help write and direct the Christmas pantomime. Americans don’t grow up with pantos — I’d only been to one in my life, at the British Consulate in Istanbul. However, I saw DVDs of pantomimes that ORT had done in the past so I just went from there. It’s been a great learning experience and

The ﬁrst bricks at the recently formed Northern Wairoa Company’s yard were moulded on Thursday afternoon and work has been carried on since under the direction of the manager, Mr. Malam. The plant is working splendidly but everything is not yet in full going order. The full staff required, have not yet been engaged and this necessarily causes a certain delay. Further delay ensues through full provision of water not yet made in regard to a supply of water for the engine. It is intended to put down a well, but at present water has to be carted by hand, a rather arduous and time consuming operation.

An amazing race in Maungaturoto The Amazing Race Maungaturoto is an exciting initiative being organised by the town’s newly formed Residents Association. Vice president, Daniel Alcock, and secretary, Nyree Alcock, are at the helm of the project, which will see participants racing around Maungaturoto, solving clues and completing tasks. The event promises to be a great day of fun for the whole family, rival community groups, businesses and friends are encouraged to challenge each other to be the winners of the ﬁrst Amazing Race Maungaturoto. prize is a scenic ﬂight over the picturesque Kaipara Harbour, donated by Ralph Schultz Helicopters, and there are second, third and spot prizes up for grabs too. Wellsford Country Show is back After a three year hiatus the Wellsford Country Show is back and it promises to be bigger and even better than before. With a focus on keeping it ‘local’, the show will take on the traditional third Saturday in November at Centennial Park. “Two shows ago, our committee decided to move away from the A & P show format and create our own community event,” says Jo Wood, who is organising the show with Lynette Gubb and a small committee. “It’s still under the A & P umbrella but this way we can cater it more to the community’s desires. “We’ll still have the beef and highland sections, the calf and lamb sections and the pony club but there is also a big emphasis on community groups both performing and fundraising. “There’ll be a local foods section and we have some really interesting food this year, such as award-winning sausages, berry ice cream and traditional Maori food, as well as the usual hot dogs and chips. We’ve really been working on getting a good variety. “Our entertainment stage is the other big thing. There’ll be half hour slots for the local entertainers to perform, with kapa haka, singing, miming and bands. The entertainment stage will close with Whangarei’s cover band, Tempist Fujit, in the afternoon. Other attractions at Wellsford Country Show on November 19 include a St John Ambulance display, a Wellsford Fire Brigade demonstration and woodchopping. All new from bullbar to towbar by our motoring correspondent There are few sights as iconic in the Kiwi countryside as a big red ATV quad, usually laden down with fencing gear, weed sprayer, the faithful farm dog and the odd bale of hay or two. And there’s a good reason why this stereotype is known to even the most determinedly urban New Zealander — Honda quad bikes work hard and go the distance. That’s why when it came to designing the brand new TRX500, the engineers at Honda had a bold decision to make. It would have been easy to rest on their laurels and tweak small stylistic cues on this popular middle-of-therange farm machine. But Honda thought that this approach would be just a little too easy, and so they began from the ground up, crafting a whole new machine for 2012. That’s no mean feat — retooling their factory to handle a whole new cooling system, chassis, suspension, drivetrain and panels were quite an undertaking. But the jewel in the crown of this back-to-the-drawing-board renaissance of the TRX is a whole new power plant — a 475cc liquid cooled overhead valve single cylinder heart which pumps out ten percent more power and six percent more torque than last year’s model. Considering the 2011 Hondas were never accused of being underpowered, this is a real coup. So is the eminently clever mono-shock

The name that does it all in agriculture by our rural correspondent With the bad weather easing off and a long hot summer predicted by meteorologists, farmers around the Kaipara district are taking the opportunity to tackle traditional spring chores — albeit a little later than usual. Muddy races and tracks need resurfacing, drainage needs to be sorted, fields harrowed and prepared, and that’s before considering any upgrades and additions to infrastructure such as dams, ponds and feed pads, milking sheds or barns. Carrying on a grand tradition of service When Ray White first opened his business in 1902, it was with little more than a set of firmly held ideals and a dream.
