Fresh from a successful campaign to stop seabed mining off the Taranaki coast, the eco-activists are not mincing words regarding the opposition to sand mining off Mangawhai’s shores. “Any form of sea mining devastates seabed ecosystems and disrupts food supplies to our wildlife,” says Seabed Mining Campaigner for Greenpeace Aotearoa James Hita. “This is a perfect example of why we cannot leave the safety of the oceans up to the systems that are currently in place. The Mangawhai to Pakiri coastline is a scientifically recognised closed embayment area, meaning any sand that is removed by mining can only be replaced by sand being taken from adjacent coastal beaches.” Mining company McCallum Brothers has now registered with Auckland Council, which administers resource management in east coast waters, for three new sand mining resource consents. If granted, these would allow them to take more than 9 million cubic metres of sand, starting at a depth of five metres out to 30 metres depth. The sand is for use in the construction industry, which needs concrete to keep pace with population growth. An alternative source within the Kaipara Harbour has been discussed. Sand mining in the south of the harbour continues under the auspices of the Atlas company, with great success and minimal impact. North harbour-based sand resources remain underutilised after

the scrapping of a Dargaville-based sand barge nearly a decade ago. “Sand mining has already had a devastating impact on the Mangawhai to Pakiri beaches, damaging seabed ecosystems, disrupting seabird feeding and nesting habitats, and causing irreversible coastal erosion,” says Save Our Sands spokesperson Ken Rayward. “The threat of sand mining is present from Mangawhai to Pakiri beaches and includes threatening the nesting and feeding habitats for the NZ fairy tern, which is critically endangered.” Greenpeace members will bring the full might of a long-established protest apparatus to bear on this issue, drawing

on a history of environmental activism which stretches back to 1970. In the past, the organisation has utilised means as diverse as legal action, direct non-violent protest, blockading and occupation of infrastructure and machinery to score victories against whaling, waste dumping, deforestation and nuclear arms proliferation. While Greenpeace Aotearoa is heading this initiative, they do so under the auspices and support of Greenpeace International. It is an organisation with strong ties to the Kaipara. The monument to its flagship, the Rainbow Warrior, instrumental in the anti-nuclear protests of the 1980s, stands proud above the town of Dargaville. ¢

Water reforms under attack

Tree petitioners seek legal advice

u by Paul Campbell

u by Paul Campbell

The government proposed Three Waters reforms is a case of “taking something by force — a rotten apple, and it is not going to work” says ACT MP and rural spokesman, Ruawai farmer Mark Cameron.

Another narrow escape from falling debris from two aged trees at the entrance to the Pahi Reserve has prompted local residents to seek legal advice to reinforce their call for the trees to be removed.

Mr Cameron spoke in support of the Taxpayers’ Union, which has launched a major campaign to stop the government’s proposed plan that would see four regional entities take over control of drinking, waste and stormwater. Local Government Minister Nanaia Mahuta has announced a working group with an eye to forcing them on all local councils. “If we are in a governing position, we will simply give it back (to council control) rather than see Kaipara for one controlled by some entity in Auckland,” said Mr Cameron. “I have the signatures of 40,000 farmers across New Zealand unhappy with the government’s policies.” The Taxpayers Union has launched a 30-second television ad and is crowdfunding to air this on prime time television and online. A campaign hub has been launched that presents key reasons to oppose the reforms. More than 65,000 New Zealanders have signed a petition against the reforms, and a new email drive is planned, targeting government MPs. The union has also commissioned polling showing 56% of New Zealanders oppose the proposed reform, versus only 19% in support and 24% unsure.

At its last meeting, Kaipara District Council decided that wider communities should have a say if the trees, planted in the 19th century, listed as ‘Norfolk Pines’ in council records, can be removed, as part of the District Plan review process. The draft plan will be consulted on with Kaipara communities in May 2022. “That’s playing Russian roulette on the council’s part,” says Pahi Reserve Society chair Mike Donald. “Our newly appointed manager for the Pahi Beach Holiday Park, Tracey Collins, has to walk and work beneath these trees, and just days ago, she was hit and injured by falling debris, just another incident in a long list. Local people have approached the reserve

p ACT MP Mark Cameron — ‘reforms a rotten apple’

Campaign manager Louis Houlbrooke says, “Opposition to Nanaia Mahuta’s multibillion-dollar asset grab is already broad, energised and well-resourced. With the government now forcing these changes on local councils, the backlash will only intensify. We are calling on the prime minister to read the room and announce a captain’s call to eject the reforms entirely.” ¢

Paparoa is growing, and the number of people wishing to move to the village in the valley can be gauged by the success of the Wai Oranga Rua—Twin Streams residential development. Last week, the Paparoa Community Charitable Trust announced that all available sections in the subdivision, located on Franklin Road, have been sold. The efforts of First National Roper and Jones’ Jill Powell and Ray White Maungaturoto’s Keith Shadbolt has seen the speculative subdivision snapped up by those seeking the country lifestyle. “This is a prime example of locals in a small community taking the initiative and producing a great result. Future of Kai Iwi camping debated

Delay for dementia unit

u by Andy Bryenton

u by Paul Campelll

Several options, including a private lease arrangement, have been discussed in a report to the Kaipara District Council regarding the future of the Kai Iwi Lakes campground.

Unexpected paperwork has led to a delay in the operation of Maungaturoto’s multimillion-dollar dementia unit at the Riverview Rest Home, which was expected to be operational last week.

The report, requested in August from consultants Morvern Group Limited, laid out five scenarios for a new management structure at the popular lakefront camping area, with the most extreme positing a possible 30year lease to private, for-profit interests. However, council staff have recommended a milder approach. It would balance improvements to the camping facilities with p Kai Iwi Lakes campground is a popular summer spot for 600 campers and up to 1,000 local visitors each day during streamlined management peak season and no relinquishment of Within the report, another analyst control to corporate interests for one of the region’s most beloved summer spots. company, Horwath Hotel Tourism and Darlene Lang, KDC’s general manager Leisure, took a deeper dive into the of customer experience, presented the figures and made comparisons with other report to the mayor and councillors. The 14-unit facility was some four years in the making and the subject of a huge community fundraising campaign, coupled with a grant from the Provincial Growth fund that set the final seal on construction. The project was spearheaded by the Maungaturoto Community Charitable Trust and is planned as the first stage leading to eventual full hospital care facilities. “The delay in receiving our first occupancy was unexpected,” says trust co-chair Graham Slatter. “We have been asked often by the health authorities when we expected to open for business and advised them of the early November date. ”We expected that was all that was required, but we were then advised that it would take from three to five weeks for the covering certification and paperwork to be completed. This was out of the blue.” However, staff for the dementia unit section of the rest home are currently continuing training in the wider facility, and the commercial kitchen in the new build is becoming operational. It has

the capacity to provide meals to the rest home as well as the dementia unit. “The delay has provided a good training and testing of systems opportunity before we soon become fully operational,” Mr Slatter said. ¢

Power dividend a festive windfall

New gateway to Waipoua blessed

u by Andy Bryenton

Northpower electricity consumers will each receive their share of $11.7 million thanks to a healthy dividend from the Northpower Trust. It will come as a credit on their power bills in the near future.

Representatives from the Kaipara District Council, roading construction contractors and Te Roroa will gather this week to bless the worksite of the new Waipoua River Road.

The Northpower Trust says it is once again satisfying to see Northpower’s consumer beneficiaries continuing to reap the rewards of their consumer ownership model. This year’s payout represents an extra $1.5 million over and above what was disbursed in 2020. “We are very pleased to offer this discount back to Northpower’s consumer owners, as we know what a difference it makes to so p Northpower consumers will receive a timely credit to their many households,” says accounts this festive season; even more than in 2020 Northpower chair Mark Trigg. It’s a payment made on customers’ November or December possible by the fact that the trust owns electricity bills. It will benefit more than Northpower for its customers. ¢

The $1.8 million project will pave a path for tourists and visitors between the state highway traversing Waipoua Forest and the site of a planned upgraded visitors centre. It will change how people access the forest natural taonga, providing a deeper environmental and cultural experience. KDC project delivery manager Jo Reid said that the road is the first step in a wider vision. “Two years ago, the Kānoa Regional Economic Development and Investment Unit allocated $1.6 million from the Provincial Growth Fund to seal Waipoua Road. Kānoa has since approved a budget increase to $1.8 million, sufficient to complete the project.” Te Roroa general manager Snow Tane says the Waipoua River Road sealing project is the start of something bigger, too. “It is part of Te Roroa’s objectives to enable the delivery of the Rākau Rangatira project by creating an enhanced single-entry point for the kauri walks and Tāne Mahuta experience,” said Mr Tane. All systems go for chopper appeal

Tee up for summer fun

u by Andy Bryenton

u by Andy Bryenton

Golfing evenings are back on the calendar as daylight savings delivers longer, warmer post-work hours. The Baylys Beach golf course offers the kind of views international golfers pay big money to enjoy during their stroll around the 18 holes, and it’s just around the corner, says Northern Wairoa Golf Club spokesperson Beth Kelliher. “The club is enjoying a wave of new interest in the sport; one of a few positives from Covid is the fact that golf can still be played, as ‘distancing’ is built in,” says Beth. “Our local club has had an increase of membership of 14% over the last 12–18 months. The club has also been working hard at making the game more appealing to everyone.” One of the ways that appeal has been built is by introducing new players to the game. Twilight golf rounds on Thursday afternoons cut back the cost of play to $5, while next week, a programme to help teach the fundamentals of golf to women is launched. The She Loves Golf programme will run from November 18, starting at 5.30pm and cover four weeks. Each session lasts approximately 90 minutes. “This includes a basic lesson, then on to the golf course for a hit and

A contract has been let for the planned new wharf at Poutō as part of Kaipara KickStart, an umbrella programme led by Kaipara District Council and funded by the Regional Economic Development and Investment Unit. Specialists in marine infrastructure STF Group has the contract, with physical works planned to start once a detailed design is complete with community input. Kaipara Mayor Jason Smith says completion of the wharf will support economic opportunities for the district. “Dargaville pontoon, Pahi wharf upgrade and Poutō wharf; these three projects are all about connection, using the mighty Kaipara to once again connect our communities by sea to each other and, in time, south to Auckland when we’re all moving on from the current Covid-dominated times. “When Poutō wharf is built, we will be able to consider setting up fully functioning water transport links across our district, vitally important for our communities to be able to

adapt and thrive into the future,” says Dr Smith. “We’re focussed on the future and getting on with the job today.” Delivery manager Joanne Reid said Covid restrictions had delayed some infrastructure works. “We’re relieved to get to a point where the detailed design is almost complete, and we can plan construction.” Work on-site is expected to take three months and be completed in May 2022. The start date depends on any further Covid restrictions, including possible delays to the supply chains. The Kaipara Wharves project includes the Dargaville pontoon, the Pahi wharf upgrade and the new wharf at Poutō. It has received $4.95 million in Provincial Growth Funding. Hokey pokey slice u by Jessica Keesing

Are you looking for something insanely delicious, sweet and easy to make? Well, look no further. I’ve got the recipe for you that’s bound to be a hit. As long as whoever you give it to likes the sweetness, that is. It’s only a few ingredients and is somewhat like a hedgehog slice, just a little fancier. INGREDIENTS 1 can of condensed milk 100g butter 140g 50% dark chocolate 250g plain sweet biscuits (I used Superwine) ½ cup coconut 2 tbsp cocoa powder Icing Hokey pokey chocolate (Whittaker’s)

METHOD Line a 20 x 30 slice tin with baking paper and set aside. In a microwave-safe bowl, place butter, condensed milk and dark chocolate. Heat in short increments until melted, mix until smooth and combined. Crush biscuits, then add to melted chocolate mixture with cocoa powder and coconut, mix well together. Then press into a slice tin. Pressing down firmly. Melt hokey pokey chocolate, and spread over base. Pop into the fridge until set. This is best stored in the fridge once cut into squares.

FARMING

Mother of all protests for Dargaville u by Andy Bryenton

Rural advocacy group Groundswell New Zealand plans to go ahead with a nationwide day of protest, circumventing Covid restrictions on gatherings by getting mobile in utes and tractors. The Groundswell NZ movement held a Howl of Protest rally two months ago, which saw large numbers of citizens gather at Dargaville’s Pioneer Rugby Park to oppose over-regulation in the farming industry. It included the charting of Significant Natural Areas, the Three Waters reforms, new rules for riparian fencing, and a raft of other legislation. “We are not against the need for regulation or the need to care for the environment”, said Groundswell leader Bryce McKenzie. ”Nor are we calling for a halt to addressing environmental issues. “We are saying there are much better, proven solutions to addressing environmental issues than the onesize-fits-all approach being legislated by the government. “There are thousands of community and private environmental initiatives happening across the country, and we believe everyone has a role to play to continue the momentum.” A IN &

SEED DRESSI

p Groundswell’s first protest action, two months ago, saw hundreds gather to show their opposition to over-regulation in farming

On Sunday, November 21 at 1pm farmers and rural citizens are invited to join the Mother Of All Protests, a joint display of opposition to what Groundswell calls a ‘tsunami of unworkable regulations’. With the mandating of the Three Waters plan to restructure all New Zealand water services, they opine that this is now also an issue for town and city dwellers.

Banners suggested by the group include ‘cooperation not regulation’, ‘enough is enough’ and ‘no farmers no future’, after the otherwise peaceful Howl of Protest rallies were marred in some towns by racist slogans, which Groundswell organisers quickly denounced as not part of their vision. Groundswell, supported by the ACT party and its local spokesperson on

agriculture Mark Cameron, say they feel ‘snubbed’ by prime minister Jacinda Ardern after being repeatedly refused an audience. The Mother of all Protests may change this. “We’re hoping she’ll meet with us this time because the people of New Zealand that turned out for our last protest have essentially been ignored,’’ Mr McKenzie said. ¢

The Mediterranean connection u by Andy Bryenton

Olives are a tasty treat in our meals and cocktails, providing excellent oil for gourmet cooking and delicious addition to dishes from the Mediterranean and the Middle East. Those with a corner of the farm or lifestyle block that’s sunny but sheltered from strong winds, might wish to cultivate their own version of this ancient crop first domesticated by the ancient civilisations of the Mediterranean some 7,000 years ago. During that time, many different branches of the olive family have been cultivated, and a wide range is suitable for growing in Northland. Kaipara’s local olive experts are the people from the Grove Supply Company, based in Mangawhai. Linda Smith, co-

owner of this family firm, says that olive cultivation is growing in popularity, with many opportunities to get involved. “As well as people planting new trees, there are many large groves, which are being subdivided for lifestyle properties. Many of the people who planted 20 years ago are now looking to hand over their mature groves to new people as they retire,” says Linda. Olive trees grow well in Kaipara’s climate and prefer well-drained soil. It’s best to allow a fair amount of space

p Olives are rewarding to cultivate and delicious in so many Mediterranean and Middle Eastern dishes

between the trees in your olive grove, as adult specimens can top 10 metres in height. While many cultivars are selfpollinating, Linda advises that tactical pruning in late spring ensures fresh growth for a bountiful crop in years to come. Olive names evoke the flavours of Italian, Turkish and Greek cooking. Frantoio, Leccino, Manzanilla, Nocellara, Pendolino and Picholine cultivars are excellent for their oil and pickling and preserving. The Chemlali, Koroneiki, and Picual varieties are prized primarily for their oil alone. The best trees for Kaipara’s local conditions are the J5 variety and Frantoio.

Olives will require irrigation during long, dry summers, rewarding careful attention with a fruit crop in the autumn. Harvesting and processing this bounty was once either the preserve of rigorous hand labour or big industrial machines. Today, with many smallholders and farmers cultivating a small grove, specialist tools are available to suit the hobbyist and the home pantry. Locally, the Grove Supply Company of Mangawhai has a selection of tools, tips and tricks to advise and assist olive aficionados. Give them a call to get growing and savour the taste of homegrown olives. ¢

Ribbons and rosettes for champions u by Andy Bryenton

The heats of this year’s Calf Club championship took place at local schools two weeks ago. Last week the best of the best gathered in Arapohue to decide the area’s top young lambs, goats and cattle, as well as top future farmers. Event organiser Megan Browning said that this year’s turnout of approximately 70 entrants was a positive sign and the high standard of the livestock on display spoke well of the local farming community’s enthusiasm.

p Young Riley Nops and his Nubian goat Denver won a swag of trophies and ribbons, for calling, rearing and overall performance. The Nubian’s large ears help it stay cool in the arid lands the breed comes from

p Judge Rhys Dackers says he’s happy to give back to the rural community after enjoying the thrill of Calf Club victory when he himself was young

p Nathaniel Crichton and Becky took home trophies and ribbons aplenty in the junior beef cattle category

p A special award in the lamb section was handed out for the young farmer and lamb with the best bond, showing a dedication to animal wellbeing

p Peaches the lamb knows to come when called by name; Cooper Mcdonald took out first place in the lamb calling contest with the help of his woolly friend

black and p Friesian cattle were all the trend this year, with many of the iconic white animals turned out in their show-day finery p Marcus Bacica and his Friesian Captain get prepared to enter the ring in the senior division

p The excitement proved a bit exhausting for some of the cattle beasts in the show ring. While it’s all right for them to take a break, young contestants must stay on their feet and in control of their charges weather allowed for a family fun day at Arapohue, celebrating the
