Mayor Greg Gent resigns “It was met with a little disbelief by councillors. I expect to be in an acting role following November 15 until byelection details are worked through with the electoral commission.” Mr Gent’s announcement comes hard on the heels of news that KDC has recorded a financial year surplus of $2.8 million which is earmarked to retire inherited debt. The debt stood at $62.1 million as at the end of June this year, resulting from the previous council’s ill-starred Mangawhai wastewater project cost blowout. Mr Gent and councillors are currently holding a series of consultative meetings around Kaipara in order to outline council policy and canvas public expectations. Next on the list is a meeting at Pahi next Friday, in the form of a social gathering at the Pahi Hall from 4pm. “On October 25 I will be holding an ‘annual general meeting’ at the Lounge, Maungaturoto Centennial Hall starting at 1pm, for the financial year just completed.,” Mr Gent said last week. “The meeting will be an opportunity to ‘hold us to account’ for that year. We finished the year with a surplus of $2.8 million which will be used to retire debt. That was against a budgeted surplus set by the Commissioners of $200,000. “All of the surplus will be used to retire debt. The year also ended very positively from a working capital perspective but weather meant we got less infrastructure projects completed.

Kaipara residents will feature in the Northland Rescue Helicopters 2017 fundraising appeal campaign to share their stories of survival thanks to the service.

“We will spend some time having a look at that carry over and see how much can be rolled forward or whether further debt reduction is an option.” Mr Gent said roading working capital would not be allocated to other council projects, and would be used for that purpose. “We are working our way through that at present after the prolonged wet weather, everything is slush and we are behind where we want to be. NZTA is involved in our discussions and we are working our way through this.” He said council was looking to reduce debt as it could afford to do so. “We don’t want this debt to be carried forward into another generation, and part of that effort may involve communities doing more things to support local progress.” 

BUILDING A NEW HOME IS NOW A REALITY

The campaign will showcase people of all walks of life including a Maungaturoto and Tangiteroria farmer who will each share their story along with others at facebook.com/ northland.rescuehelicopter.com. Logan Diamond from Maungaturoto will tell of his experience after a diving trip to collect scallops turned into a different type of adventure. After not feeling well during and after the dives Logan tried to make it home, where he was found by his wife Zaria, asleep in his ute and still in his wetsuit. The Northland Rescue Chopper transported him to North Shore Hospital. Tangiteroria farmer Scott Taylor knows he is lucky after not one,

but two accidents which resulted in the services of the helicopter to help him out. “Both times, the absolute true professionalism of the crew has stood out,” said Scott. Paul Ahlers, Chairman of the Northland Emergency Services Trust, says funds raised contribute to general operating costs of the much-needed life-saving service. “Donations help cover the costs of fuel, maintenance, insurance and more. The fact is we need these donations and the trust continues to be humbled by the support of the Northland community in getting behind their rescue service.” 

New cafe in town  by Anna Harding

Named ‘Fresh to Plate’, Dargaville’s latest eating place is a cafe run by 28 students and two tutors from NorthTec’s ‘Certificate in Food and Beverage Service, Level three’ course, at the campus, on Murdoch street.

For the past fifteen years the Horseshoe Cafe and Dairy has been a hub for the ‘uptown’ community in Dargaville’s Hokianga Road, providing the convenience of a local dairy alongside hot meals from breakfasts to takeaway dinners.

 NorthTec students and tutors who run the ‘Fresh to Plate’ cafe, now open to the public at the Dargaville campus on Murdoch street

“We’ve been open for six weeks for fellow students but now it’s open to the public,” said NorthTec’s Dargaville regional administrator, Dene Holyoake. “It’s called Fresh to Plate because our horticulture course provides most of the produce and then we’ve also got our apiculture course, so we’ll be using honey from there. Our agriculture course has a portable milking machine, so fresh milk from there will be used in baking and we’ll also be getting chickens soon, for fresh eggs,” said Dene. “We’ve got a painting course as well, so they’ve painted the inside and rewallpapered it. The carpentry course built the deck and the agriculture students have put up the fences. It’s

been a joint venture from everyone.” Student Michele Sherman said “I really wanted to do a course, so I thought I’d give this a go. I’m learning so much, the tutors Kerrie-Ann and Jenn they’re fantastic. It’s really good to see customers come in and see all our hard work.” The cafe serves hot and cold drinks, including espresso coffee. They have a selection of sweet and savoury food, ideal for lunchtime. Opening times are 9.30am–2.30pm Tuesday-Friday. The bi-annual Keri Keri plant zone sale is on next week at the campus, Monday-Saturday, October 9-14, so they will be open just next Saturday as well, with plans open every Saturday by summer. 

That’s meant a great opportunity for a ‘sea change’ for incoming owners Bhavik and Karishma Patel, who have travelled north from the iconic Kiwi town of Patea, famous as the origin of the anthemic ‘Poi E’. The home of our ‘second national anthem’ is also the home of a busy Four Square which the couple operated until very recently. Bhavik says the move north is partly about the fine weather, but it’s also all about the opportunity to share something new with the Hokianga Road locals — a full menu of delicious Indian cuisine. Karishma’s old fashioned home cooked favourites include classics like butter chicken, onion bhaji, spicy rogan josh and more, all available for takeaway. But don’t worry — Kiwi standards like hot chips and pies will still also be on the menu! Renovations are currently underway, and Jolene is staying on to help with the transition for a couple of weeks, but the message is clear — you’re all invited to stop by and meet the new team in Hokianga Road and sample a menu they’re justifiably proud to share!

Local races cancelled

Reception in the forest

 by Anna Harding

 by Joanna Manson

This years Dargaville Races have been cancelled due to recent track renovations and ongoing wet weather conditions, with the meeting transferred to Ruakaka.

A collaboration between Vodafone and Northland internet provider Uber Group has brought mobile coverage to the Waipoua Forest. While one of the area’s top tourist destinations, its lack of mobile phone coverage has been non-existent until now. The collaboration has allowed the visitor centre to experience full 3G mobile phone coverage while having the added bonus of enjoying fast broadband speeds which reach to nearby homes. While the two companies often compete for customers they have worked together to sponsor this community project. Vodafone has provided the physical hardware and Uber Group has supplied a separate broadband connection dedicated to phone traffic to make the signal possible. Waipoua Forest Visitor spokesperson Jaime Clarkson says the centre staff and local residents are really excited. “Cell phone reception

“We’ve renovated part of the track and it’s not quite ready to race on. The grass is just a little bit sparse,” said Dargaville Racing Club president Tim Antonio. The decision was made final by an official New Zealand track inspector and stipendiary steward, making the clubs next race meet not until November next year. “It is very disappointing, especially as we were caught short last time. The track looks beautiful from a distance, but it’s just a little bit sparse… there’s

not a lot we can do,” said Tim. “Also where you park the trucks, it’s just a bog hole, you wouldn’t want to park a truck there, you’d be towing them all out.” The Whangarei Racing Club has replaced the Dargaville meeting, with the event happening on the same day, Friday, November 17, 11.30am-5.30pm, at the Ruakaka Race Course, Peter Snell Road. “If possible, going along and supporting the Whangarei Club on our behalf would be much appreciated,” said Tim. 

WE’VE PUT IN THE HARD YARDS LEARNING THE TRADE, SO YOU CAN ENJOY A JOB WELL DONE A PLUMBER and GASFITTER with the skills you can trust is a valuable asset - that’s why Grant Low of Dargaville’s Grant’s Gas and Plumbing is dedicated to training a new generation in the same way he learned his craft many years ago. Like all qualified plumbers, roofers and gasfitters, Grant came up from the humble beginnings and on-the-job lessons of an apprenticeship, serving his time with a seasoned veteran of the trade. Coming up through the ranks he learned the many other aspects of the job, from installing fireplaces and gas califonts through to ordering parts and helping source designer bathroomware for his clients. When the opportunity came to take the helm of his own business, back in Dargaville after a stint in Auckland city, he and his wife Roseanne (the administration and accounting side of the enterprise) took the leap into a new era. Now they’re training a new young apprentice and business is booming. There’s certainly scope to become your own boss with the right attitude in this vital trade.

The Mangawhai cliff top walk has been closed until further notice following slips in April and again this month.

Department of Conservation’s Abi Monteith said they were hoping to reopen the track by late spring but for the time being the walkway is completely closed until further notice. Once the slip is removed a Geo Tech assessment will need to take

place before the track is fixed. The track opening is considered a priority after it was identified by DoC as a Great Short Walk of New Zealand. The new walk networks will be officially launched by DOC and Tourism New Zealand next month.

The Mangawhai Activity Zone will showcase the ever expanding range of activities on offer on October 22 beginning at 11am with junior cricket for over five-year-olds. “The demonstration will be conducted by New Zealand cricketer Brendon Bracewell and will include fast bowling, bowling accuracy plus using a batting device, said MAZ committee member Ken Rayward. Settlers Day success The Kauri museum’s annual Settlers Day was again a hit with locals and the Kaipara community. Chief executive officer, Lisa Tolich said her team could not have envisioned a better day last weekend. “We would like to thank all of our exhibitors, staff and volunteers who shared with us their passion for heritage, storytelling and their own special collections. We were happy to welcome visitors from near and afar and in many cases, establish family ties to the Kaipara.”

Five impressions

Mangawhai’s good sort

 by JAnna Harding

 by Joanna Manson

A group of five local printmakers have come together to showcase a variety of techniques at the Mangawhai Artist Gallery.

Steve Green is Mangawhai’s technology guru fondly known as the ‘computer chap’ and his tireless help around the community earned him a spot as One News’ ‘good sort’ of the week.

 From the left is Mangawhai printmakers, Wendy Clifford, Nicki Everett, Lynn Middleton, Rosina Kamphuis and Gayle Forster

 Steve Green Mangawhai’s ‘computer chap’

Wendy Clifford, Nicki Everett, Gayle Forster, Rosina Kamphuis and Lynn Middleton will demonstrate the different printmaking techniques they used in their work, including monotype, etching, drypoint, woodblock, collagraph and Ukiyo-e Style. “Printmaking is an ancient art as well as a contemporary one. It would be a pity to see some of these printmaking techniques fall by the wayside. I am sure there are many people out there who would appreciate a better understanding of what fine art printmaking is or can be,“ said Wendy. “We hope that people in and around Mangawhai, artists and beginners, will be inspired to have a go and that our demonstrations will show that

printmaking is very accessible and satisfying. You don’t always need a printing press,” said Lynn. “There is so much currently going on in the global art scene, being discovered, recovered and initiated, and printmaking is on that roller coaster ride,” said Rosina. “Drop into the gallery and be surprised and inspired by what’s going on in your art community. Watch the Mangawhai Artists website at mangawhaiartists.co.nz for follow up printmaking workshops and events.” Exhibition ‘5 Impressions’ runs from Saturday-Tuesday, October 1424. Demonstrations are on Sundays 15 and 22, on the hour 10am-3pm and Wednesday 18 from 1-3pm. 

Before retiring in Mangawhai 10 years ago, Steve spent 50 years working in various computing roles starting in the United Kingdom and ending his professional career at a New Zealand software company. He was nominated for helping locals with technical issues, averaging three house calls a day — all at no charge. After his three minutes of television fame Steve said he was amazed at how many saw the segment and even received a standing ovation at his weekly pub quiz. His clientele originally started with his neighbours and word about his skill set soon spread around residents. “When I started, the work was mostly PC related but in the last year-and-a-half

I admire the spirit of the place, everyone is contributing one way or another. If everyone went on strike Mangawhai would die in a day — everyone loves mucking in.” He says he would like to see ‘Steve Greens’ pop up in every community offering a free service, “that would be neat.” 

New driving initiative

Big weekend for village

 by Joanna Manson

 by Anna Harding

The Maungaturoto and Districts Rotary Club recently held a popup shop on the main street to let locals know about the club plus an innovative new driver mentor programme.

The Paparoa Gala is coming up, on Saturday, October 21, 11am3pm, at the Village Green. A ‘Trash to Art’ competition is happening on the same day, at the Paparoa Memorial Hall from 10am-3pm.

The initiative was made possible after the club purchased a secondhand vehicle in a bid to help young local drivers gain their restricted licence. “We’ve got a team of half a dozen volunteer mentors and the idea is to help young learner drivers get their restricted licence. Our objective is to get them licenced so they can get jobs,” said club president Alex Tetzner. The mentors will even take drivers over to Whangarei to sit the test and the programme has gained support from local police. Not only will the mentors help behind the wheel they will also give training

“The gala will be an old fashioned kind of day, with kids games like pin the tail on the donkey, a three legged race and bobbing apples. Theres also a bake-off and Progressive Paparoa have funded the hiring of a marquee so we can weather proof the event,” said gala organiser Jillaine Murray. For the bake-off, there are six adult categories: jams, pickles, cakes, sponges, biscuits and pies. The children’s section is open. After judging, all food will then become part of a shared lunch. “It’s going to be a good fun country day and everything’s free. The only

on basic car maintenance and how to change a tyre. The pop-up shop was used to help boost club numbers and give an insight into the various goings on within the club. “We have a number of fundraising activities we do as well as helping out with world Rotary projects such as the emergency response kit and sponsoring exchanges,” said Alex. If you’re interested in joining Rotary or getting involved with the driver mentor programme contact Alex on 09 431 6434 or membership director Brian Plunkett on 09 431 7418. 

thing we’re asking for is for is to bring something to contribute to the shared lunch table, if you’re not entering the bake-off. It’s been a busy year for our local professionals, from the building trade through to automotive and even in the field of health and wellbeing. People are looking North for a new place to live in numbers not seen before, and one of the big reasons is that we have a network of fully qualified experts in place covering all manner of fields. One of the big areas in the spotlight — from newspaper headlines to election debates — has been the building industry, and it’s a crucial time of the year for the hardworking men and women who craft Kaipara homes.

late breaking sunshine with a large waiting list of people looking to either renovate their new home here or build afresh, and you have a recipe for a very busy regional force of excavator operators, concrete specialists, builders, electricians, plumbers, roofers, painters, carpet and flooring experts and other subcontractors. This means two things — and the first is crucial from a resale and insurance standpoint. The temptation may well exist if a homeowner desperately wants work done by Christmas to simply get anyone who claims to be handy with the tools. It’s a timely reminder that a large scope of works now must be completed by a licensed professional which is the law. There are still lots of little tasks you can DIY or entrust to a skilled handyman, but anything major — and here we mean anything involving electricity, gas, piped water or load bearing timbers —

must be signed off by the pros. The second point is that a busy workforce still encourage you to talk to them now about being first on the books during the sunshine of the new year. After all, between sourcing materials, drawing up plans, visiting the bank for finance, the council for consents and permits and waiting for components to ship, your project may not be ready to go until after Christmas in any case. Jump in now, talk to the many highly qualified tradespeople in your town, and book in for 2018. It’s closer than we all may think! It’s also true that there will be some new fully qualified faces behind the tools as the new year dawns. Special congratulations to all the apprentices who are gaining their qualifications this year, and best of luck to those young people leaving school to take up a place learning on the job with the best of our local professionals. 

FULLY QUALIFIED Presenting a professional image  by Andy Bryenton

It’s a time of growth and change across the Kaipara region, with more new stores opening, it seems, every week in our local towns. Dargaville’s main street is no exception, with major upgrades underway to certain downtown landmarks, while others get a new lease of life from within. Balancing the divide between operating a thriving business and undertaking renovations is never an enterprise taken lightly. But Apparelmaster’s Dargaville location is a case in point of how it can be achieved. Throughout a nearly complete remodelling and reapportionment of space inside the Victoria Street shop — along with a new entranceway, foyer and signage — the machines kept running and the work kept rolling out to waiting vans. Ironically enough, Apparelmaster are all about helping other industries look good, so a ‘spring spruce up’ was both timely and topical. In fact, this one has been planned since the store changed hands. Shop owner Janine had a slight advantage in sourcing a top builder for the project — local Certified Builders member Grant Tregidga is part of the family! But the logistics of planning around day to day operations were the same as for any business owner contemplating a change. With a team of tradespeople who are flexible and efficient, business can continue even as a new look is achieved. The end result here is that numerous bulky and unnecessary machines have been removed, the workspace has been streamlined and the front of the store area looks fresh and new. Work was able to progress because of a careful understanding of what Apparelmaster

needed to keep their customers happy, and how those needs could fit in with a tight building, painting and rewiring schedule. As the growth of all our local towns continues to see fresh opportunities arise and new businesses pop up, builders and their associated tradespeople are likely to be busy with refits and upgrades for some time to come. It’s a sign of the times, and a wake up call to established businesses to take a look at their own presentation, considering everything from a fresh coat

 Janine from Apparelmaster Dargaville knows the value of a sharp image — adding to the changing face of the town’s main street

of paint to new signage and branding. After all, a main street is made up of the sum of its parts. But when it’s infused with a little commercial pride it becomes something more. 

Ford have a lot to celebrate this year — globally, the blue oval brand is riding high with top models in all markets. In motorsport they’ve beaten Ferrari at Le Mans. And locally there’s plenty to celebrate as well, as Dargaville Ford’s massive new yard nears completion. In a year of superlatives — not forgetting the continued pre-eminence of the Ford Ranger on local roads — the Dargaville team have chosen to celebrate something that’s literally above the call of the open road.

areas where folks work and play. All through this month and into the next the team which keep the fleet of three Sikorsky choppers in the air are out fundraising, visiting towns around the north and hosting gala days. So what better way to help out, thought Dargaville Ford’s Lindsay and Anthony West, than to offer their revitalised ‘home base’ as the spot for Dargaville’s own Rescue Helicopter Appeal open day? The answer, of course, was ‘go for it’ — so mark your calendar for Friday the 17th of November and don’t miss out. It’s a chance to support some real heroes, who fly out to save the injured and sick in all weathers. It’s also a chance to take a look at what has been achieved with the massive expansion of Dargaville Ford’s

premises — both the yard itself and the ranks of new vehicles parked on top of it! The fun begins at the crack of dawn with More FM’s morning DJs broadcasting live from 5.30am, setting off a day of displays, vehicle demos, sizzling sausages, fun and games, and of course a big presence from the rescue chopper crew. Expect some exciting new additions to the range of vehicles on display as well — the home of the West Coast Edition Ranger is not to be upstaged, even as a host of customers’ kittedout utes return to their ‘birthplace’ for the day. Festivities will continue all day long, so there’s no excuse not to pop in, drop a donation in the bucket and join the fun! 

Summer highways beckon  by Andy Bryenton

The weather has turned, Labour Weekend is just around the corner and many of us are looking into garages and under tarps which may not have been disturbed since Autumn. Sometimes it takes more than just a prayer and some WD40 to get those ‘big boy’s toys’ ready for the season, and it’s about now that we should all be thinking about some TLC for our holiday essentials.

Prime concern for many right now is getting out onto the water. Fishing contests are heating up over on the East Coast and seasoned anglers are never keen to wait for a chance to land that big one. But before dipping your keel in the brine it’s always a good idea to give both your boat and trailer a once over. Trailers need a WOF, and may have succumbed to the creeping threat of rust or perished rubber during a long winter. Boats, too, need an overhaul from engine maintenance to electrics through to comforts like gas for refrigeration and cooking. In this case, it’s not just prudent, it’s also a safety feature. Check aluminium hulls and superstructures for damage and get it welded up shipshape before ensuring the essentials are stowed on board —

life jackets, a correctly logged rescue beacon, flares, first aid supplies and a radio are all literal life savers. Gas and electrical systems need to be checked out for those ships of the open highway as well. Alongside a WOF or COF for your camper, RV or caravan, make sure your electrical and gas systems are in good shape. A gas leak or an electrical fault are bad enough alone, but put together they are a disaster. Needless to say, towing anything of substance for holiday fun means it’s necessary to ensure your tow vehicle is in fine form as well — and doubly so if your towing ‘work horse’ only requires yearly warrants. A lot can go wrong between check ups, and the added weight of a boat or caravan in tow could make it all come to the surface at

the worst possible time. That being said, Labour Weekend is not just a time for play — it may herald the coming summer, but it’s still a time for lots of yard work to be achieved. Those who are keen to take advantage of less soggy lawns and blitz through unruly undergrowth may find that a quick tune-up for the ride-on mower prevents a hellish chorus of slipping belts. It’s the same with all small engines — disuse can add gremlins to fuel filters, pull-starts, spark plugs and lubrication systems. Show them a little love and you’ll have an easier time of it out in the weeds. 

Melane says the new business has had high interest from locals wishing to be volunteer workers. “We would like to encourage Mangawhai men to become involved from customer involvement to product collections. We are hoping to find people with skills to refurbish gifted products where small repairs can be carried out in a part of the Factory.” The shop is open every day in the lead up to opening to receive product donations.  Caro Rae, owner of Caro with Love

After living in Sydney for 11 years, Caro and her partner moved back to New Zealand a year and half ago and now call Mangawhai home. With her products doing well at the market, plans to open a shop were fast tracked after spotting the perfect space. A week later she had secured the shop and another four weeks later it was open to the public, entitled Caro with Love. “I just had to hit the ground running and go for it — there is an amazing network of people here who said ‘you can do this.’ Caro opened in late August and stocks a range of local artisan pieces, collaborative work and clothing. “I really love supporting small businesses, It’s

quite cool when you can do an awesome collaboration. I now stock a local candle maker and he has given me an exclusive range of candles.” So far the shop has been well received and her customers have varied from her regulars at the market to new faces from young mums to grandparents looking for gifts. “I’m so thrilled with how it’s turned out, it’s nice to have a space where I now can change it around when I want and can get lot’s of new stock in, especially with Christmas coming up.” Caro with Love can be found at 104 Moir Street, Mangawhai and is open Wednesday — Friday, 9am-3pm and Saturday 9am-12pm. 
