Tide of change in local election

Preliminary results in Kaipara’s local body elections indicate a council full of new faces and a provisional win for Craig Jepson as mayor..

Official results comprising of special votes and hand-posted ballots will be in by October 19. Still, the figures already tallied and made public, show Mr Jepson ahead of his nearest rival for the mayoralty by more than 1,000 votes.

“It was a bit of a shock to receive such a strong mandate,” says the provisional mayor-elect.

“It was very humbling. I walked the streets all over Kaipara, and I feel that what I heard then is reflected in the vote.

A strong repudiation of Three Waters, of co-governance, and of the Kaipara District Council spending beyond its means.”

Despite being the first Mangawhai citizen to win the mayoralty of Kaipara, Mr Jepson is adamant the illusion of an east-west divide must be broken down. Achieving this is one of his first orders of business — a hallmark of his administration to come.

“I want to be a mayor for the whole district. Dargaville needs me as their mayor, as Mangawhai is already growing. I want to bring that growth and progress to the whole district and to Dargaville. We need a strong economy and a place that people want to live in,” says the provisional mayor-elect.

Next on what has become a very busy agenda for Mr Jepson is to meet with the council’s chief executive and with the team of councillors, who, pending final results, will make up his administration.

With them, his first goal will be a frank assessment of spending to curb rates, especially for the elderly. He says he’s excited about the people

who have been elected and looks forward to a harmonious working relationship.

“When I was a young fellow, up north, playing rugby and living in a rural town, we had very little money, but we all got on, regardless of race, creed, religion or background. We had community spirit, and that’s what I see in Kaipara, that rural thing, that sense of community,” Mr Jepson said.

Meanwhile, the constitution of that council suggests a desire for change. Voter turnout was higher this year than at either of the two previous elections, but some regional races were very tight. At the time of publication, provisional council members include Jonathan Larsen, Rachael Williams and Mike Howard, Mark Vincent and Ron Manderson, Pera Paniora for Kaipara’s Māori ward, and Gordon Lambeth, Ash Nayyar and Eryn Wilson-Collins to make a complement of nine including the mayor.

The future of inter-regional diplomacy also looks bright, with provisional mayor-elect Jepson congratulating Wayne Brown as mayor of Auckland.

The pair have worked together extensively on development projects in the past, with Mr Brown in the capacity of engineer.

Final results, which may alter the outcome of narrow-margin victories in both the Moananui o Kaipara and the Wairoa General wards, will be available by October 19.

Rail revitalisation discussed Dome dump appeal delay

The government is seeking to make a case for

Submissions are open now for Kiwis to have their say on rail travel and the potential reopening of previously closed lines. With two such lines running through Kaipara, it’s a topic worth visiting, say rail proponents.

“We hope interested New Zealanders will take the time to have their say and help us better understand inter-regional passenger rail and its future in New Zealand,” said committee chair Greg O’Connor.

The number one point in the enquiry’s terms of reference, as shared by the Ministry of Transport, clearly identifies situations like the one prevalent in Kaipara.

‘Investigating possibilities and viability of passenger rail in underserved communities, those with prior rail links that have been disestablished, and those currently advocating for improved rail links’ is the primary purpose of the online submissions process, which can be engaged in by visiting parliament.nz and searching rail.’

The revitalisation of the North Auckland line would put trains on the doorstep of Wellsford, Kaiwaka and Maungatūroto with a link through to Whangārei and a possible discussed freight extension to Northport. Dargaville’s branch line is

currently utilised for tourism purposes, but the most enthusiastic rail supporters envision a possible light passenger and goods service there as well. Submissions close on October 21. ¢

The Environment Court hearing into an appeal against a dump for Auckland’s rubbish in the Dome Valley is to be suspended for a month, with an expected delay in any decision until next year.

Landfill applicant Waste Management Ltd has requested a pause in proceedings in order to make a site assessment “with a specific cultural lens.”

The company bought a 1,000-hectare site in the Dome Valley to contain the tip, with widespread opposition, citing a major pollution threat to the local environment and the Kaipara Harbour.

The battle to halt the landfill plan has spanned four years and has been led by the locally-formed Fight the Tip movement and supported by iwi, councils and other organisations, including the Department of Conservation.

“We fully support this pause,” said FTT executive member Michelle Carmichael. “Site assessment with

a specific cultural lens is a process that should have been done more correctly from the beginning. Let’s hope Waste Management learn from their mistake.”

The current court process began in June this year and follows a hearing commission, which gave the rubbish dump proposal the green light.

“It’s a shame four of the independent council commissioners didn’t pull them up on this. Big credit to the (hearing commission) chair who was the lone voice who recommended to decline the resource consent based on cultural impacts, along with ecological reasons,” Michelle says.

It’s expected that a court resumption could be delayed for calendar reasons up to next March.

New sports fields a reality Restoration in pā site’s future

In a final act described as a ‘legacy project’ by outgoing mayor Jason Smith, the Kaipara District Council voted to purchase land for recreational facilities in Mangawhai.

At the last meeting of the incumbent civic administration, councillors voted through a decision to use developer’s contribution funds to purchase the approximately $6 million parcel of land and dedicate it to recreation. The incoming council, elected this week, will further refine how this will serve local sporting and green-space requirements. Community feedback was positive on this purchase.

“The community feedback and engagement here is significant for its detail,” said Mayor Smith. “For the future council, there is plenty of scope for opportunities to build in a great location, near to existing sports fields and right on the shared path.”

Housing and commercial developers in the Mangawhai area have paid into a fund specifically designated for recreational parks and green spaces. During the years, this fund has built up to the point where the complete purchase of the 5.8-hectare

site could be achieved with no need for the assistance of other funds.

“This is one of those particularly sweet council projects which only comes along very rarely,” Mayor Smith said. “I would like to especially thank councillor Peter Wethey for bringing this to the attention of council. This is a great legacy project for you Peter, for us all, but especially for you.”

Like Mayor Smith, Peter Wethey bowed out of local politics this week, ending his tenure on the council with this investment in the future. ¢

Part of the new plan for Pou Tu o Te Rangi and Harding Park includes the recreation of the historic pā site, which sits above the Northern Wairoa River.

“Some short-term developments include new picnic tables and seating, security improvements, a water receptacle at the cemetery gate and removal of unnecessary fences,” says KDC spokesperson Maia Renner.

“In the long term, restoring the pā site with the construction of a replica whare, palisades and other structures, better connectivity around the park, removal and management of pest plants, and a children’s playground are some of the actions planned.”

A strategic site situated at a navigable bend of the Northern Wairoa River, the promontory that contains the pā site has been of importance to tangata whenua since well before colonial times. Many battles were fought there, and west Kaipara history and legend surround the fortified space with its views across the river plain.

During the land sales in the 1870s, when Joseph Dargaville founded the adjoining town under his own name, the Te Uri o Hau, Ngati Kawa and Ngati Whiu peoples were acknowledged as having mana over the surrounding lands of Pou Tu o Te Rangi.

An artist’s impression accompanying the new plan for the hilltop park shows a new entrance to the pā, just east of the Rainbow Warrior masts. This year, for the inaugural Matariki public holiday, visitors gathered at Pou Tu o Te Rangi to watch the stars of the Pleiades rise between a gap in the eastern hills. This placement indicates the horological significance of the site. It is no coincidence that Pou Tu o Te Rangi is the Māori name for the star Altair, a major part of the navigational star calendar. ¢

“The music itself has something that seems to connect with people in a special way. It has a great rhythm,

there is something in it that speaks to everyone,” Rennie says.

He wants to introduce people to Celtic music, and he says he has had great responses from many so far.

“Many New Zealanders have ancestry in the Celtic nations. The way I approach it through the storytelling and the history, allows people to get a foothold into what it is. I want to bring them along on a journey.”

Rennie wanted to be a professional Celtic musician from an early age and became a full-time performer about two years ago. He started playing the flute when he was about eight years old after attending flautist Chris Norman’s concert.

“I listened to him as a baby, went to his concert and met him when I was 12. At 19, I went to live with him on the east coast of Canada and lived with him as an apprentice for a year. The flute I am playing is made by him.”

Alongside the flute, he plays Irish tin whistle, guitar, bodhrán and more. Rennie will play a selection of instruments at the Dargaville concert.

“If I see something I love, I want to be able to do it. I want to share that

experience with other people and inspire them in the way I was.”

The concert will be Rennie’s first time in Dargaville and he says he is extremely excited to play here. Tickets cost $20, and are available online. ¢

The local Lions Club of Dargaville pitched in with a fundamental necessity for the Babylon Coast Road mountain bike park, where volunteers have been busy all winter and into spring cutting tracks for cyclists to enjoy. The addition of a composting toilet means that families enjoying the facilities will not be ‘caught short’. It’s an off-grid solution using a modern take on old technology to banish smells and waste.

“Clive McDermott of the Dargaville Lions handed over the keys to Kaipara Cycling, opening a compostable toilet for our new mountain bike park,” says Des Cogan, part of the team forging the new outdoor attraction.

“The park is progressing well with some seven tracks completed. That means we are able to open for riders from grades one to four; there are trails available to ride today.”

The finished park will cover a large network of trails spanning several acres

of forested hillside. Similar attractions in other parts of New Zealand have proven to be extremely popular with both locals and tourists, which means a boost for the local economy. Dargaville businesses, individuals and families have generously sponsored the creation of the Babylon Coast Road park, through volunteering and donations.

“We have had good financial assistance from locals, but we are close to running out of money as the work progresses,” says Des. “Anyone can join Hive Pass and purchase a pass to ride the trails or call in at Time To to make a donation. ¢

Speed limit cuts head west Stronger together

The Kaipara District Council will soon ask for feedback on proposed speed limit changes in the west of the district.

“We are doing this in a staged process, focussing on areas where the evidence indicates that changing the speed limit will have the greatest impact on reducing fatal and serious harm crashes and improving overall road safety,” says KDC communications adviser Maia Renner.

As part of the government’s Road to Zero national road safety strategy, the KDC is required to review speed limits across Kaipara. A major overhaul of speeds in the eastern part of the district led to a wider range of limits in the Kaiwaka and Mangawhai zone, with some as low as 30km/h. Fears of overzealous enforcement for ticketing revenue have proven unfounded, with residents there generally positive in their feedback more than six months on.

To ensure the limits are reviewed correctly in the west, the council has approved a speed limit review consultation for the Poutō Peninsula and west coast catchment areas. The consultation will run from October 28 until December 5.

A statement of proposal, along with detailed technical review information, will be made available for feedback during the consultation via the KDC’s website.

Poutō Peninsula and the west coast catchment area include the townships and coastal settlements of Aranga, Aratapu, Baylys Beach, Glinks Gully, Kai Iwi Lakes, Kelly’s Bay, Omamari, and Te Kōpuru. This area also includes the Ripiro coast, one of the longest areas of drivable beach in New Zealand, which may receive new speed limits, especially around access points and settlements.

On September 29, the staff and students of Ruawai College hosted their Mental Health Awareness Week carnival day, the second year the school has run this event.

“The focus of Mental Health Awareness Week this year was reconnecting with the people and places that lift you up and providing pathways and strategies for those who struggle,” says assistant to the principal Tyla O’Sullivan.

“Ruawai College’s goal was to show its staff, students, and those within the community that when they feel alone, or the weight they are carrying feels impossible, they need not feel alone. That we, as a community, are all in their corner, willing to carry some of that weight.”

Community members and local organisations were welcomed on to the grounds to support students as they took part in a wealth of activities exploring better mental wellbeing, and how to support mates and colleagues going through tough times.

Students planted native trees along the boundary line of the school field as a way to honour and reconnect to their whenua. Staff and students made a start on painting three new murals, reflecting the core school values of

respect, resilience and responsibility. Students and locals pitched in together to flip pages in a reading challenge, flip burgers for a shared meal, and flip gigantic tractor tyres in a fitness challenge which emphasised teamwork. More than 150 burgers were made, 1,278 book pages were read, and an astounding 8,229 tractor tyre flips were completed over the course of the day.

A special thank you goes to the Ruawai Volunteer Fire Brigade, Sport Northland, He Maara Hou, Ruawai Community Church, Ruawai Lions Club, Kaipara Refuse, Kaurilands Skill Centre Trust, Ruawai Primary School and Naumai Marae.

Mural

for the 7pm start.

The work, by local artist Micaela van den Berg, depicts a larger-than-life tūī amid floral splendour and will take up the entire north-facing wall of the Dargaville Library. The design was the winner of a nationwide contest for mural artists, and all the paints come from this prize, while the scaffolding and its protectant wrap are gifts from local businesses.

“I’ve had a good, ongoing conversation with my Resene representative, and they have been very helpful in turning the design into a full-sized work of art,” says Micaela.

“I’m enjoying it, but the difficult part of constructing such a large work under the necessity of weatherproof covers is that I can’t stand back and see how the whole thing is progressing.”

In this one respect, the artist’s current work is like that of renaissance master Michelangelo, who famously painted the Sistine Chapel ceiling in the Vatican on his back, on a scaffold. However, while the great Italian master is recorded as regretting every minute of painting in such an uncomfortable position, Micaela says she is loving the creative process.

This enjoyment has been doubled, she says, by the help of volunteers who have stepped in to help complete ‘Dargaville’s biggest ever colour by numbers’, filling in sections of the three-storey-tall artwork in vibrant colours according to the award-winning original design.

If the work proceeds according to plan, it will be ready to unveil after the current school holidays. The library and council staff are liaising to organise a suitable welcome for this new piece of art, bringing colourful civic beautification. ¢

The cost is $10 for each participant, with a maximum limit of 72. The organisers say RSVPs need to be in by October 28. There will be light supper and bar facilities on offer with a chance to win raffles and mystery prizes. Jamie Nyssen is the quiz master.

“Members are drawn so the six-member teams are not stacked, and everyone has an opportunity to win. Hopefully, the biggest winner of the night will be the community making new friends and getting a defibrillator,” organiser Ron Bishop says.

The club aims to raise $5,000 during the next five months to cover the initial cost. Extra proceeds will go towards a security case and ongoing costs. The excess will be donated to Hato Hone St John.

“There are other defibrillators in town, but not all have 24-hour access. We will place it on an external wall outside the club; it could be five minutes closer to save a life. It is for the community, and it is important.”

Ron says if other businesses want to donate a prize or funds, that would be gratefully welcomed.

“It is not me, it is the volunteers behind the scenes that make the success, and we have also had positive support from businesses. It has been well-received. Once we have achieved this, we will look at other causes to fundraise for.”

10am and 4pm.

The shop will offer a collection of gift items, home-grown fresh produce, decorations, home decor, flowers, crafted wooden items and more. New products will adorn the shop each week for people

to launch their passion project, Merriments, in Matakohe,

to buy. “We are launching with our range of Christmas gift ideas and decorations and will offer a complimentary wrapping service. We are focussed on upcycling wood for a variety of our handcrafted items. As as the weather warms up, our garden will be providing seasonal produce and flowers,” says Ruth.

“We are filling it with products we have lovingly made or grown. My flower art and greeting cards combine both aspects, alongside home decor items, market bags, plants and much more.”

Gary built the shop project managed by Ruth, who also did the interior design, another passion of hers. She says this project has been a long-term goal for them and Covid gave them the opportunity to pause and reflect.

“We emigrated 20 years ago with a dream of doing it, but life got busy, and it fell off our radar. We decided now was the time to follow our original dream — it is never too late. It has come to fruition, and we couldn’t be happier. We have been extremely busy with our part-time work, building Merriments and creating

products. Our energy bill has been low this winter as we haven’t sat still.”

Among other responsibilities, Gary nurtures and maintains the vegetable garden and crafts the woodwork creating items such as children’s toys, wooden planters and furniture.

“I press all my own flowers in the press that Gary made for me. It is a constant joy filling it up, practising being patient and opening it up to see my results. My focus is on our flowers, art, decor and upcycling, each of us making unique items which we have both made with love.

checklist of things to plan before the year rolls out.

With supply chains still disrupted in some industries, and good weather for building, roofing, painting and outdoor work on its way it’s time to think about getting on the books for those big jobs around the house. Tradespeople are uncommonly busy, and appreciate having a nice, clear plan right through until the end of summer in 2023. You could be part of it if you act soon, allowing the professionals to order goods and source materials with plenty of leeways. Everyone enjoys knowing just where they stand, and with most construction, renovation and home maintenance tasks taking a little longer than usual due to postCovid staffing and supply, it’s preferable to know that you’re good to go in a few weeks or a month, than call expecting instant gratification and be let down. None of our local tradespeople wants to say ‘no’ to their valued customers, but last-second pleas to fix that bathroom or wire in those new lights before the relatives arrive for a summer holiday can only stretch so far.

Another issue which being in quick before Christmas can help solve, for both you and the people you call in to help with your next summer project, is inflation. That old economic boogeyman is back again, and it means that the price for things like roofing iron, bricks, mortar, concrete, fixtures and timber could be on the rise. Both you and the professionals will be glad to order now and beat any increases for the start of 2023.

p

Then there’s our mercurial northern weather. Sun and sweltering heat one day, pouring rain the next; the old saying about ‘four seasons in one day’ could have been coined just for Kaipara. However, if you’re in the trades, you have to work right in with what Mother Nature is pitching. Being booked in early means that if storms and squalls make for unavoidable delays, there’s room to move on time.

If you have projects to complete before the holidays, now is the time to contact your local professionals to avoid disappointment

looked at that project and wished it was just over and done with? How much do you think your home could be worth if it were revalued now, with the new driveway, retaining wall, deck or fireplace all good to go? Make a timeframe, work out a budget, and you can watch the progress happen, rather than leaving things forever in the realm of the ‘should haves’. ¢

Gifts that really do keep giving

time for the hardest decision

While we’d have to be the first to note that socks and underpants are a huge contribution to human civilisation, they are not the most exciting gifts. The hot ticket for 2022, is a range of gifts which combine technology and creativity. Here are the top five.

1. Sewing machine. The oldest item of technology on the list has experienced the biggest jump in popularity as a new generation switches on to the idea of utterly personalised fashion. Everyone can buy clothes, but making your own shows an upcycled, socially conscious mind and some creative flair. As a bonus, in this age of being disappointed by online deliveries, you can be sure everything will fit. Plus, there’s fabric art and quilting fun to be had as well.

2. Digital art tablet. The ubiquitous tablet does it all these days, but what it excels at is making drawing and painting fun and easy. No paints to spill, no compressor and airbrush to manage, and the ability to zoom in or erase mistakes. A good tablet and stylus work well with your mobile phone’s camera to provide

a window into the world of art photography, without the expense of buying a top-end DSLR camera.

3. 3D Printer. An addictive, fun hobby which is great for Christmas as it can literally deliver more toys than Santa. Did you miss out on having all those models and robot toys a child? Print them with an easyto-use computer interface and a huge online library of free files to play with. The same goes for useful gadgets, things for around the home, real-life-sized car trim and many more items. Prices have come down and support is easier to access than ever.

p Creative gifts don’t get old; they allow the receiver to get better with time, unlocking new skills for life

4. Garden tools. Get someone you know set up to enjoy cultivating their own vegetables and flowers with all the equipment needed to be truly greenfingered. There’s a lot to learn in the art of gardening, and it can become a lifelong hobby which provides a more beautiful outdoors, as well as a hearty source of good, inexpensive, healthy food.

5. Adventure camera. The GoPro and its relatives have changed the way we record our outdoor pursuits, from landing a big catch with rod and reel to blitzing the mountain bike trails or catching a sweet wave. The toughest of these lightweight cameras can put up with big knocks and are still light enough to fit on a helmet or harness to allow hands-free YouTube stardom. ¢

The ride that welcomes in summer

A tradition which now stretches back for more than a decade to 2009, the Tangiteroria Trail Ride is a fixture on the

is traditionally the ride which welcomes the summer season here in Kaipara.

A signal that the holidays are just around the corner, it’s a chance for families to get outdoors and fire up their

bikes for some old-fashioned fun in support of the local school.

There are many aspects to the big day that keep riders returning for more, with one of the major factors being the extremely picturesque scenery of the Tangihua ranges, through which the trail meanders. It’s a rare occasion for off-road riders to have this kind of untrammelled access to the Tangihua back country — an occasion not to be missed.

This year’s ride will take place on the weekend of October 23, with an early start and registration. Event organisers say all you need to bring along with your entry fee is a clean vehicle, helmet, safety gear and a thirst for adventure.

The main loop for 2022 comprises 35 kilometres of mixed terrain, backdropped by stunning mountainous bush country. There are optional routes marked along the trail for those seeking a bigger challenge as well, and the track is different this year from the last event to keep things fresh. There’s also a smaller loop for the juniors, taking in 2.7 kilometres

with no road crossings and a more gentle mix of terrain, and a simple, flat mini track for the very young.

A part of the Tangiteroria Trail Ride since 2017 has been the Allan Jessop Memorial Race, honouring the memory of a trail ride founder, local and friend of the community. This race commences with a classic Le Mans style start, in which riders run to their machines before heading off to the track. There’s a commemorative trophy up for grabs which carries great sentimental value and bragging rights.

p Trail riders eagerly anticipate the first big event of the local season; the Tangiteroria Trail Ride means that summer fun is back again

This October, the hills will echo with the sound of two-stroke motors as Tangiteroria’s award-winning little school welcomes guests of a different kind to come and ride the ranges.

This year there’s also a second event at a slower pace that comes between the motorbike action and Christmas.

Tangiteroria School is also organising a horse trek to take in the beautiful scenery of their part of New Zealand from the saddle. Happening on November 26, this trek will substitute horsepower for literal horsepower and a more gentle traverse of the land across Arahou Farm. ¢

Jesse is an experienced mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter and the 2021 World Kickboxing Association North Island Cruiserweight Title winner. He has a black belt in Kyokushin Karate. Previously he taught youth martial arts at Core MMA in Hamilton and is a qualified personal trainer.

“I got into mixed martial arts in 2004. I started with Muay Thai Kickboxing and carried on doing different types of martial arts throughout the years. It was something I always wanted to do. It’s a cool community. All the fighters know each other, and everyone is mates.

“There were no gyms here for me to fight, so I thought to start something here. I want to keep fighting but I made the decision to move up here for my family. I’m mainly interested in working with youth, but I am definitely open to teaching adults,” Jesse says.

“I really love it, and I know it is a good pathway and a great place to direct your

Jesse is open to teaching groups or one on one sessions. Depending on numbers, it will either be at Jesse’s Te Kōpuru home or at Ignite Your Fitness in Dargaville. Anyone keen to get involved can call Jesse on 022 523 1438. ¢

“We wanted to ensure that there’s input from everywhere, as this is about community inclusiveness and pride in our libraries, east and west, town and country,” says head librarian Lisa Salter.

During October, those who want to take a shot at designing a new mascot for the library can pick up an entry pack

with all the information they will need. They’ll be asked to draw a sketch of their creation, but it does not have to be perfect. A description can go along with it for those whose imagination is more powerful than their drawing skill permits.

Designers are encouraged to think laterally, consider the mascots for famous sports teams, products and clubs, and most of all, have fun with the concept. ¢

Motorsport’s female-firsts

It’s been 129 years since New Zealand women were given voting rights. A minimal 15 per cent of New Zealanders can’t name a woman racecar driver, according to a Jaguar press release earlier this year. Can you?

Making the tracks for New Zealand racing women was Sybil Lupp, a pioneering racecar driver. She had an aptitude for mechanics and began driving at 11 years old. At 14 years, she helped pay for her

first car, the M-type MG sports car known as the MG Midget. She would go on to race in many MG vehicles and study car maintenance via correspondence.

At her workplace, the Samuel Kirkpatrick & Company Nelson canning factory chief engineer saw her keenness and employed her in the machine workshop. He assisted her to obtain a mechanic’s role at JG Ingram and Company, where she met her husband, John Lupp. She bore a daughter in 1940 and a son in 1945 before John died from heart complications later that year.

In 1947, she married his brother, Percival Lupp. She was the first female executive and helped found, alongside her husband, the Otago Sports Car Club — one of Motorsport New Zealand’s founding clubs.

As the year proceeded, Sybil won the club’s inaugural competition with many more across her racing career. Sometimes, she even competed against her second husband, Percival.

She broke a speed record in 1951 in the flying kilometre for class F of 120.7 to 161.77 kilometres an hour, unmatched

until 1957. Another femalefirst Sybil achieved was in winning the Otago Automobile Association’s Sundstrum Trophy.

Sybil’s racing career tapered off, but her prospects remained in her automotive passion. In 1952, she founded the MG Car Club of New Zealand. She became interested in Jaguars the following year after helping race doctor Bruce Hay’s XK120. Her first Jaguar was second-hand and was known for her 1972 E-type V12.

With her mechanical expertise and experience from fixing her own cars, she created a travelling tune and repair business. She relocated to Wellington and, following her divorce, married Lionel Archer who she created the Archer and Lupp Motors business with. Sybil died in 1994 but continues to be remembered as one of New Zealand’s prominent racing women.

In recent years, women continue to achieve racing feats. New Zealander Emma Gilmour signed with McLaren in

2021. She began racing for the Extreme E Series McLaren this year, making her its first female driver. It is not the only historical landmark she has passed. She won the 2016 Rally of Canterbury, the first woman for the New Zealand Rally Championship.

Another trend-breaker is Tiffany Hamilton (nee Chittenden), who was the female-first winner of the 2007 British National Karting Championship. She is one of Jaguar’s representative’s for the She Sets the Pace promotion and grant for men and women challenging driving gender stereotypes. Grant applications close November 1. ¢

An adventure in early flight

Walsh Brothers?

On a February morning in 1911, these two young men took off from Papakura and made history as New Zealand’s first aviators. Now, their full story is told in a book by Kaiwaka author Terry Moyle, who also delves into other fascinating facts about flight in the Edwardian era.

The First, Terry’s book, chronicles the steps that led up to that first flight aboard a wood-and-canvas aeroplane called the Manurewa. Vivian ‘Vee’ Walsh and his brother Leo were helped by their sisters Veronica and Doreen, and were part of an enthusiastic aero scene which also featured Vernon Tupara, Frank Roberts, and George and Harry Stephenson.

Another big influencer on the scene was Reuben Dexter, a US citizen who came to New Zealand and ignited a passion for flight. He was vice-president of the nation’s first aero club and codesigner with the Walsh brothers of the first Kiwi flying boat in 1915. Like the brothers, he was enamoured with cycling and motor cars, a common thread among the pioneers of aviation. Leo Walsh, for example, built Auckland’s first fire engine and helped found the Power Boat Association.

Terry Moyle’s book covers how all of these personalities and technologies

came together to crystallise into a moment when the Manurewa defied gravity, ushering in a new era of flight. Period photographs and research of magazine and newspaper articles add to the depth of scholarship behind the story.

Beyond that first flight, there’s more to the tale of aeronautical adventure. The Walsh Brothers teamed up with Dexter to craft several seaplanes and founded a flying school in Kohimarama.

By 1919 all manner of people were learning to fly, including Bishop William Clearly, who took his Catholic mass ‘on the wing’, using a seaplane to visit farflung parishes in Coromandel.

By December that year, Dargaville was ready to make history as the first destination for a mail flight. Crowds thronged Hokianga Road, and pictures in Mr Moyle’s book show the excitement as nearly the whole town turned out to greet George Bolt as he landed on the Wairoa River.

However, there may have been more than simple coincidences in play. It’s noted that the choice of Dargaville was made by Matakohe political heavyweight Gordon Coates, and that the event, staged on the day before a major election, put

p Author Terry Moyle has brought the early days of flight in New Zealand to life, revealing the big characters and daring deeds of a pioneering time his Dargaville-dwelling opponent on the campaign, Alfred Gregory, in the shade.

For those interested in the daring of those pioneers who took to the sky in homemade creations of wire, wood and fabric, this book is a must-read. The First is available from New Holland Publishers now, online and from leading bookstores. ¢

Single use plastics now banned

To support Aotearoa New Zealand’s move towards a low-waste, circular economy, the Ministry for the Environment has banned a range of hard-to-recycle plastics and single-use items.

• Single-use plastic drink stirrers (all plastic types)

• Single-use plastic cotton buds (all plastic types)

• Plastics with pro-degradant additives (subset of plastic type 7)

• Certain PVC food trays and containers (plastic type 3)

• Polystyrene takeaway food and beverage (plastic type 6)

• Expanded polystyrene food and beverage packaging (plastic type 6)

Plastic is one of our greatest environmental challenges. Many single-use plastic products are used only once, not properly disposed of and end up littering our moana and whenua.

Hard-to-recycle packaging and products can cause contamination and interfere with our recycling systems.

Moving away from hard-to-recycle and single-use plastics will help:

• Reduce our plastic waste

• Improve our recycling systems

• Protect our environment

Dargaville Library mural makeover

Dargaville Library is undergoing a colourful makeover this school holidays, thanks to local artist Micaela van den Berg.

An art teacher by trade, Micaela will start on her colourful tui and flax design during the school holidays, with help from some of her students aged 13-18. Resene have covered paint and material costs, and Northland Scaffolding have kindly donated the scaffolding to bring Micaela’s grand-scale artwork to fruition.

The scaffolding required to complete the mural will temporarily block the after-hours book returns box. Librarians are asking that customers return books during opening hours.

THELMA AND CHARLIE PARKER EDUCATION TRUST

The above education trust was established at the direction of the late Mr Charlie Parker, a wellknown and respected local businessman.

The purpose of the trust is to establish and maintain scholarships which will be known as the THELMA AND CHARLIE PARKER SCHOLARSHIPS. Each scholarship is designed to assist any current pupil or pupils of Dargaville High School, who, in the opinion of the trustees, would benefit from further education or study of either tertiary or other nature, or of any recognised course of education or study and who would otherwise be unable to undergo such education or study having regard to the financial resources of that student and/or that student’s immediate family.

The trustees of the trust therefore invite applications for assistance from students of Dargaville High School or from any person on a student’s behalf. Application forms are available from the school office or Hammonds Law, Solicitors.

To enable consideration by the trustees, completed applications must be delivered to Alistair Hammond of Hammonds Law by 5pm on Friday the 4th November 2022.

Any enquiries should be directed to the High School office or to Alistair Hammond of Hammonds Law, Solicitors.
