Northland leads the way Northland is leading the way in preventative healthcare for children by providing free GP visits for 6-12 year olds ahead of the proposed national roll-out in July next year.

Dargaville ATC to celebrate 150 years of cadets P7

The initiative which gives all Northland children free access to their general practitioner, including afterhours consultations, up until their 13th birthday, was launched on October 1. The current $5 prescription charge is also covered. Northland DHB and Northland PHOs recognise that cost is a significant barrier for families in accessing medical

care, which has prompted them to take this action now. “We applaud both the Government’s decision to rollout free healthcare for children up to the age of 13 from July 1st next year, and the recent strong messages from the Prime Minister around the need for us to collectively address child poverty,” said Manaia Health PHO chief executive Chris Farrelly.

“Delay in seeking treatment could mean the difference between a shortterm, easily treated infection, such as a sore throat, and the long-term cardiac damage of rheumatic heart disease.” Dargaville Medical Centre manager Judy Harris said the early rollout is a good thing if it is increasing early intervention and overall access to services. continued on page 3 …

Sin City - a Dame to Kill For Return to the gritty streets of Basin City, where every noir stereotype has a dark past and the mob, the cops and mercenary private eyes battle for control of the streets. This time Mickey Rourke and Bruce Willis step into Frank Miller’s twisted pulp-comic world to confront the tale of a deadly damsel putting everyone else in distress...

Postman Pat the Movie The beloved children’s character hits the big screen in a feature length spectacular. Pat enters a TV talent show, with uproarious results - and must face a challenge to his peaceful English village existence as fame brings its own problems!

Predestination It’s not easy being a temporal agent - policing the time-streams and protecting the future by literally altering the past. Now one agent must face the ultimate test - to hunt across all of time for a criminal seeking to escape justice and wreak a terrible revenge.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adapted from the farm ore grim and violent graphic novel from the 1990s, this all-action thrill ride follows a quartet of martial-arts-trained mutants living in the sewer system and battling the terrorist troops of the evil Foot Clan, led by the cybernetic samurai known as the Shredder. Silly good fun for young and old!

Hip-hoperation For those who think hip hop is just for the young, this movie sets the record straight. And then scratches it a bit, as a troupe of Kiwi retirees go from the old folks’ home to the Vegas stage as the world’s oldest hip hop dance troupe. Life affirming, fun and with a fresh soundtrack to boot.

The Lunchbox A mistaken delivery in Mumbai’s famously efficient lunchbox delivery system connects a young housewife to an older man in the dusk of his life as they build a fantasy world together through notes in the lunchbox

Guardians of the Galaxy A rag-tag band of interstellar thieves and assassins must save the galaxy from the clutches of an evil warlord. With cutting edge FX and cutting sarcasm, this is a comical rollercoaster ride of action which will appeal to fans of fellow Marvel flick ‘The Avengers’

Boxtrolls From the creative minds who brought us ‘Coraline’ and ‘Paranorman’ comes a Victorianera tale about an orphan boy trying to find his way in the world. This isn’t Charles Dickens, though - this lad was raised by a loveably gruesome family of subterranean trolls. When his adopted clan are threatened by evil pest exterminators, it’s up to him to save the day.

p Finishing fourth in a very tough Roller Mills tournament, showed the mettle of Northland, up against two major Auckland sides, including last years champions, in the finals of the competition. “We’re very proud of them. It’s a very tough tournament,” said team co-manager Melanie Harrison. ”They all gave 100% and played some fantastic rugby.” Kaipara representatives on the team, from left: Jordan Hutchings (Dargaville) Liam Shae-Harding (Whangarei) Anton Weight (Dargaville) and Rawiri Walker (Wellsford)

Planes - Fire and Rescue After the huge success of Planes (itself a spin off from the huge Cars franchise), Disney-Pixar has taken us back to the world of living machines, once again catching up with the spirited cropsprayer Dusty and his friends. This time the exracer is taking on a new challenge, joining the heroic Blade Ranger and his team to fight a huge forest fire

Housebound Another cracker of a Kiwi horror flick, in the tradition of Peter Jackson’s early work. Sentenced to house arrest, Kylie is forced to move in with her parents, who seem strangely cheerful about the prospect of their home being haunted. Winner of the coveted HR Giger prize at horror’s ‘Dead by Dawn’ festival.

Aunty and the Star People Jean Watson, recently turned 80 years old, is a Kiwi novelist who lives in Wellington and is well regarded in the literary community. But half a world away, in the poor region of Tamil Naidu in India, she is revered as ‘Aunty’, the lady who has given hope to a generation of orphans, by setting up homes for them and funding their school studies. A touching documentary, following the life of an everyday ‘saint’ from New Zealand.

p The drums and beats of Africa reverberated around Dargaville over the weekend. Around 45 drummers from as far away as Wairarapa and Palmerston North descended on Dargaville Intermediate School for the workshop conducted by Simon Fraser from Melbourne. The weekend concluded on Sunday afternoon with a public performance of drumming and dance.

Top comedian to talk teen issues

Crowdfunding — a local opportunity

u by Colin Patterson

u by Joanne Speechly

Mike King wants to use his personal experience of alcohol and drug addiction to encourage young people to ask for help.

Crowdfunding is the new buzzword when it comes to raising money, and it’s attracting huge interest as a source of broadbased funding for community projects or business ventures.

The comedian is coming to Kaipara on Thursday. He will speak at an event in Tinopai at 9am, before heading to Dargaville High School where he will speak to students at 1pm. In the evening he will hold a Community Korero in the Northern Wairoa War Memorial Hall starting at 6.30pm. Entry is free. Mr King says his problems started at school. “I was an ugly kid. I was self conscious about how I looked. I spent a lot of time by myself having conversations with myself. That led me into some very dark places. “I lacked self esteem and had no confidence. One day I cracked a joke and people laughed. I ended up getting my self-worth from other’s people’s validation.” He says most adults can’t relate to kids because they think so differently from them. “As adults we think they think like us. But the world has moved on and we’re stuck with old-school thinking.” Mr King says he started speaking to young people after a friend invited him to go to Kaitaia High School and Taipa District School following an epidemic of suicides early last year.

“I went there and I wasn’t sure what I’d say. So I shared my story. The kids responded really well. Using my story, the kids can see the beginning of their journeys.” Since then Mr King has travelled up and down the country talking to young people and community groups about issues affecting teens. But he emphasises he is not a counsellor. And his work can only be successful if there is follow-up help available. “All we are qualified to do is to listen.” Asked to describe what he does, Mr King responds. “We’re identifying future leaders who water the seeds we plant.” For more information go to www.keytolife.org.nz. ¢

PledgeMe, with an enviable success rate of 48.6 percent — compared to Kickstarters’ 42 percent — has raised $2.65 million for 639 projects, involving 36,497 pledgers. In an age where sources of funding are becoming increasingly stretched, crowdfunding is creating an economical helping hand. Co-founder of PledgeMe Anna Guenther sums up the merits of the world’s newest source of start-up funding “The whole essence of crowdfunding is the transparency around it. You can ask questions of the creator visibly on their campaign. All the information is there and if it’s not, you can ask why.” ¢

It has opened the way for instance, for local Kaipara projects to reach out to the world for funding, following new legislation in the Financial Markets Conduct Act which came into effect earlier this year. Put simply, crowdfunding is being used to raise money for individuals and projects through receiving small amounts of money from a large number of people and is typically achieved via the Internet. There are two models of crowdfunding — donation, or reward-based funding and or investment funding. Across the world it’s becoming big business and here it’s gaining momentum. Whether you want to undertake a creative endeavour or support a worthy cause, there are several local crowdfunding platforms to choose from and a host of overseas platforms that are worthy of investigation too. Fund-seekers generally create a profile typically containing a short video, an introduction to their project, a list of rewards per donation and some images. The idea is to create a compelling message that readers will be drawn towards. Successful ventures have included raising funds to take part in sporting events, or even for financing the development of new technology. Advances in photography and watch technology have been financed by crowdfunding In New Zealand PledgeMe.co.nz and the Snowballeffect.co.nz have licences to operate crowdfunding websites in New Zealand. International Platforms of note are Sportfunder and Kickstarter.

“There’s always a way to come back to study to improve your life. The support is there.” Rachael Sio - Foundation Studies

Mr Guest said that while the current situation was a concern, it was important to remember that the industry has always been characterised by potential risk and market fluctuations. He offers farmers some sound advice, which can be viewed at www.kaiparalifestlyer.co.nz

New Kaipara New role for Erica catchment farming group

u by Joanne Speechly

The launch of a new community group will give farmers an opportunity to discuss how biological matters can be managed differently, in order to achieve a win-win situation for both productivity and the environment.

p Farmers Hal and Penny Harding, who are hosting an introductory session at their dairy farm next month

The focus is on farmers coming together to talk about issues, so they can learn from each other. Russell Simmons, an ex dairy farmer who helps convene a similar farmers group in the northern Waikato, has been asked to help get the local initiative rolling, and a series of on-farm meetings have been planned for spring and early summer. The first of these, An Introduction to Biological Farming, will be held at two venues in the Kaipara and Rodney. “Don’t be put off by the word ‘biological’”, says Hal Harding, who is hosting an introductory session at his dairy farm next month. “We are all just regular farmers looking for solutions together. As it was, we were putting on more and more fertiliser and getting rapidly reducing returns, so we figured there had to be

another way.” A similar introductory day will be held at Bev Trowbridge’s sheep and beef farm at Ahuroa. “When we took over the farm 10 years ago it was extremely pugged and we had no topsoil,” says Bev. “Now we have deep topsoil, the grass grows through the droughts and the winter rain is absorbed, rather than running off or sitting on top, but we’re still battling with our lease block.” Introduction to Biological Farming will be held at Hal and Penny Harding’s property at 242 Pouto Rd, from 10am to 2.30pm on October 17 and at Bev Trowbridge’s farm at 332 Komokoriki Hill Road, Ahuroa, from 1 to 5pm on October 18. Bargain time at antiques event

Show day at Arapohue A small but keen group of students, together with their calves, lambs and goats, are getting ready for Arapohue School’s Show Day on Saturday, 1 November.

u by Colin Patterson

One of the most awaited events on the antiques calendar is on this weekend, as the Northern Wairoa Lions holds its antiques and collectors afternoon.

p Its a big day out at the Arapohue School Show Day

p A wide range of collectables will be on sale at the Northern Wairoa Hotel

The event takes place at Dargaville’s Northern Wairoa Hotel on Sunday between 1pm and 4pm. Lions president Jean Johnson says it will feature a wide range of antique items for sale. “It’s always popular as there are always many bargains to be found.” Sellers can buy tables to display their wares for $10, while entry for buyers is $4. Space for tables is limited, so they have to be booked in advance. For

bookings call Ms Johnson on 09 439 7575. The event raises money for Lions community projects. Ms Johnson says Northern Wairoa Lions raise money for child cancer and breast research. The Lions have also donated to the Dargaville Volunteer Fire Brigade and help residents at the Norfolk Court retirement home. Members also work with Dargaville Lions to organise the annual Dargaville Christmas Parade. ¢

An innovation at this year’s event is the non–championship open class, in which children from other schools, who want some more practice in the ring with their animal, can take part. It is also open to home-school students, pre-schoolers and even adults who might be keen to enter the Whangarei A & P show later in the year. Students will also be putting together some exciting indoor exhibits on the Friday ahead of Show Day. “Our school may be small but we have some excellent results with our students academically,” said principal Diana Russek. “They are keen to participate in

sports events and activities, such as Matariki, and Calf Club and Show Day are included in our inquiry about Celebrations, which is our Term 4 topic. “I am regularly asked if we are closing soon and the answer to that question is no, we are not. In fact we are keen to have some more students.” Entries for the open classes must be made in writing by October 22, so the school can organise their timetable for the day. There is a $5 entry fee. For further information or the entry form contact the Arapohue School office on 09 439 7513 or email admin@ arapohue.school.nz. ¢

Dargaville ATC to celebrate 150 years of cadets u by Colin Patterson

Air Training Corp cadets and former cadets have been invited to a 150-year reunion lunch at the Dargaville Aero Club over Labour weekend.

p Celebrate with the Air Training Corp cadets at Dargaville Aero Club on October 26

The New Zealand Cadet Forces is celebrating its 150th birthday, with events scheduled up and down the country. The first cadet unit was formed in Dunedin High School (now Otago Boys High School) in 1864 and by 1870 there were several, including units at Nelson College, Christ’s College, Wellington College and Auckland Grammar. Records indicate a cadet unit was operating in Te Kopuru in 1904 but this eventually disbanded. The Northern Wairoa squadron was formed in 1941 by Alwyn White. It has paraded continuously since. Now called the 57 Squadron, its cadets provide honour guards for visiting and local dignitaries and they play a big

part in Anzac Day commemorations. 57 Squadron unit commander Barbara Gillatt says the unit is organising a lunch where current and former cadets can meet and compare experiences while in the unit. “Cadet forces have changed so much in the last 150 years. It would be fantastic to learn about the format of old parades, the uniforms they wore and the types of activities they did,” says squadron leader Gillatt. The lunch will be held at the Dargaville Aero Club on October 26, and reservations are required. Squadron leader Gillatt hopes to see cadets aged from 20 to 80 attending. To register for the lunch, or for more information, call squadron leader Gillatt on 09 439 5904. ¢

Top honours again The Mangawhai Cadet Unit has once again proved itself to be the best in the business — for the seventh year in a row. Nine cadets from the unit — which is part of the New Zealand Cadet Force — won the Upper North Island cadets skills test held at Ardmore in South Auckland earlier this month. Unit commander Sandra Grayson says it is the seventh year in a row Mangawhai cadets have won the trophy contested by cadet units from Taupo north. “That’s a great record and an outstanding achievement.” She says cadets have an age limit of 18, meaning a frequent turnover of members. “Almost half those this year were doing the skills test for the first time.” She says the skills tests assessed the cadets in 12 categories including shooting, gun safety, physical fitness, navigation theory and practise, carr ying equipment, casualty evacuation and drill. “The weather was appalling,” says Lt Grayson. “The cadets had to put up tents in 70km/h winds.” Their win earns the Mangawhai cadets a place in the national finals

to be held at Ohakea Air Force Base in early November. The Cadet Force is run in association with the New Zealand Defence Force. It is directed by the Chief of Defence Force on behalf of the Minister of Defence, and is supported by the community. ¢

There will also be a selection of stalls selling plants and seedlings, pre-loved clothing, arts and crafts and baking, and eftpos is available onsite. “We’ve been really lucky with our prizes and auction items this year,” says PTA president Nyree Alcock. “Ralph Schultz Helicopters have put up a prize for either a scenic flight or aerial work, 100% Fergus Appliances have given us a Samsung Galaxy tablet and there are family passes to Kelly Tarlton’s, Sheep World, the Kauri Museum and more. As a bonus, everyone that comes along to the gala goes into the draw for the entry prize, which is a Sharp boom box, and there will be a big grocery hamper raffle and quick fire raffles throughout the day. “Dad’s are encouraged to get decorating for the Dad’s decorated cake auction and there’ll be plenty of the usual fairground food, including candy floss and old time sweets. The gala really is aimed at the whole family and it will be a great community event, catering to all ages. “The planning has been hectic at times but the gala day has been really well received and we have a fantastic PTA and supportive teaching staff. Northlanders are being invited to an event to celebrate the importance of clean water in our streams and rivers. Communities for Clean Water is holding events around the country over the weekend of October 18 and 19 to draw public attention on clean water and the threat posed by ongoing pollution of our rivers. The campaign aims to encourage the general public to take an active interest in projects and activities that contribute to maintaining and restoring our waterways. Between 10am and 12noon on Sunday October 19 members of the public will be able to join freshwater ecologists as they monitor the condition of the Te Pahi Stream near Maungaturoto. Northland campaign coordinator Jon Hampson says the Te Pahi Stream has been chosen because it feeds directly into the Kaipara Harbour, which is an ecosystem under serious threat. There have been a couple of groups started recently dedicated to protecting the harbour. “We’re celebrating the role communities play in protecting our waterways.” He says the workshop will focus on uncovering what species live in the water. “We might see fish traps and see what lives in the water. We can use nets to look at micro invertebrates (insects). “Their populations can give us an indication how healthy the water is.” Tests will also be carried out on the level of sediment in the water. Mr Hampson says there is limited

KAIHU VALLEY RUGBY CENTENARY 100 years of rugby in Kaihu u by Colin Patterson

A hundred years ago Kaihu could almost be called a bustling metropolis.

The club’s centennial begins on Friday afternoon with a meet and greet. At 11am on Saturday the Kaihu under-16s which won this year’s Northland championship will play Otamatea. Then the senior team will play a Northland Invitational XV at 1pm. There will be a dinner in the evening with guest speaker former All Black Glen Osborne. A set of centennial

jerseys will also go under the auctioneer’s hammer. All events will take place at the Kaihu Rugby Ground. “We’re very proud of our facilities,” says Mr Stewart. “We have our own grandstand.” ¢

p Rugby flourishes once again in Kaihu

“It was a big place in its day,” says Kaihu Rugby and Netball Club president Brett Stewart. It was in the middle of a busy farming area and was surrounded by forest at a time when forestry and kauri gum extraction were big employers. The rugby club was the focal point of a thriving community. Forestry workers would come out of the bush at the end of each week and join locals for a game of rugby, followed by drinks and social activities in the clubrooms. Over the years, the game has changed along with the club. Kaihu and the surrounding areas have declined in population and now many players live or work in Dargaville. The club has also gone through hard times. “About six years ago, we had a senior team and no juniors. We were on the cusp of falling over. But thanks to a proactive committee and a lot of hard work we survived and flourished.” Now Kaihu has under-sevens, undernines, under-11s, under-13s under-14s under-16s and under-18 teams, along with a seniorEUROSTILE team.

However, the club has no women’s team, which is a little surprising given its most famous player is current Black Ferns prop Aleisha Nelson, who will be at the celebrations.

Reunited from far and wide u by Andy Bryenton

Dargaville’s Normanby Street had the appearance of a packed auto forecourt last Friday evening, as a horde of Ford Ranger utes descended on their point of origin for a reunion party with a difference. Dargaville Ford boss Lindsay West was proud to host the second annual Ranger Reunion festivities, organising a night of information, upgrades, education and fun as Ranger owners from across the north met, mixed and mingled. Some came from farms, others from busy forestry work sites, while yet more drove from as far away as Kaikohe and north Auckland to join the gleaming ranks of Rangers on display. On hand to congratulate the performance of both Dargaville Ford and the Ranger ute in general were Ford New Zealand’s sales manager, representatives from supporting industries such as Maxxis, UDC and

Gas and Tyre Dargaville, and a crowd over 100 strong of proud Ford owners. With plenty in common, the guests enjoyed catered nibbles and drinks while talking all things Ranger, from the latest in off-road gear through to pumping stereo systems, bright spotlights and designer mags. In the rows of Rangers outside there were no two identical, thanks to the after-market options offered not just by Ford themselves, but by specialist suppliers such as Beaut Utes, whose hard-as-nails looking black Ranger sported a powerful winch and nudge bars capable of clearing a war zone! Dargaville Ford have sold over 170 Ranger utes since the model’s inception in 2011, achieving a staggering figure of 46% local market

dominance. This means that literally every second ute you see should statistically be a Ranger — an amazing feat, even considering that the Ranger has nabbed the top light commercial spot from Toyota’s well-regarded Hilux after a close to three decade reign. Lindsay notes that this year’s second Ranger Reunion was even bigger and better than the first, introducing many newcomers to this popular ute. Next year’s may be even bigger again — especially with news of the Rangerbased Everest 7-seater super-SUV in the works and slated for release sometime next year. New crew aboard at Northland Boating u by Andy Bryenton

With summer on the horizon, the minds of many Kaipara folk are turning to thoughts of bait and tackle, water skis and waves. Situated as we are on the doorstep of one of New Zealand’s most bounteous, beautiful and varied marine playgrounds, it’s no surprise that boating is in the blood for many of our friends and neighbours. And perhaps none more so than the duo who have recently taken the helm of Dargaville’s largest marine showroom and workshop, Northland Boating. Tania and Paul Dunn have returned to the west coast to pursue their passion for all things marine, revitalising the 22year old business and promising great service for all local boaties. “The key is looking after the locals and customers,” they both agree — and with strong links to both Dargaville and the west, the Dunns have an excellent grasp of the needs of local boat owners. Paul, a keen angler and diver, grew up in Dargaville on his parents’ farm. Tania spent many summer holidays on the rugged and scenic Glinks Gully beachfront at the family bach. Paul and Tania are not new to the industry as they also own Marine North in Whangarei. Having an existing team in place to support Northland Boating was a big factor in the decision to expand West. The Northland Boating team are

looking forward to growing Northland Boating and understand that to be successful; the key is “looking after the locals and customers.” Northland Boating will continue to supply Extreme and Fyran boats with Yamaha outboards to Northland and there is new stock ordered and arriving soon With qualified Yamaha marine technicians on staff, and a wealth of knowledge based on first-hand experience fishing, diving and simply enjoying the boating life, the crew at Northland Boating have a lot to offer. The team can service any make or model of outboard engine in our full service workshop and ask them to make sure your trailer is up to spec and to get you a WOF as well. The workshop focus is to get it right first time with excellent customer satisfaction. A revitalised Northland Boating supporting all boaties in the region is the goal, and the team are there to help. If they have not got what you need in store, then they have the ability to source and supply it. So head on in and see the team, say hello and let them know what they can do for you. ¢
