While resource consent and all the red tape involved has been dealt with, the substantial wharf to replace the original settler’s landing on the upper reaches of the Otamatea is still a pile of building material, some miles from the riverbank. Much of the timber has been sponsored by Kaipara individuals and businesses “So with the time frame so tight we are trying something that’s probably never been done before,” says 150th chairman, Albie Paton. “An instant wharf.” The piles and decking for the wharf will be assembled off-site, and the entire structure prefabricated. “We are looking for some skilled help and tools when we assemble all the bits and pieces at Tim McGill’s Barnbuilding site on Mountain Road on Thursday 17 and Friday 18 October, and then the setting in of the piles and assembly stage at the landing site in Bickerstaffe Road on Saturday 19.” “We are asking volunteers to bring gloves and earmuffs as we are working with timber machinery, and tools and socket sets will be needed for the bolting up phase. We trust we’ll get some good help on something that has probably never been tried.” The completed wharf will be the jumping off point for a pioneer landing and parade and three days of celebration of the original Albertland settlers arriving at Maungaturoto, after they rowed up the river from Kaiwaka.

“Memories of Kaipara holidays will be shared all over New Zealand and overseas, after a very busy time for young visitors to The Kauri Museum,” said CEO Bet Nelley. The museum is proactive over the holidays, with many young people visiting relatives in the area, some from Australia and further afield. “Wet weather meant an influx to the museum, where our holiday programme

included such things as polishing kauri gum, with the results free to take home, and pioneer arts and crafts. A typical comment we had was ‘it’s much more fun than school! “Our class making peg dolls was a huge attraction for the girls.” Museum staff also highlighted the fun, dressing in period costumes to enhance the youngsters ‘trip back in time’. 

Businesses boost mental health facilities Another item on the wish list of the Kaipara Community Health Trust has been finally ticked off, with the “unveiling” of the refurbished mental health family conference room.

 Supporters came together to open and bless the refurbished mental health family conference room at the Dargaville Hospital

KCHT chief executive Deb Evans, says the new-look facility at the community health building in Dargaville looks a million dollars. “We had great support from so many — the Warehouse gave us a coffee table, curtains, art and other furnishings worth well over $400, the Dargaville Quilters Club donated $500, Fosters donated a lovely new three seater couch, the Northland District Health Board supplied the paint and the ANZ bank gave us a green ‘National Bank’ couch after their changeover.”

Dargaville Hospital operations manager, Jen Thomas, says the room is a vital space away from the hospital, located in the community health building, where mental health clients and their families meet with health workers. “We wanted to make it a pleasant room where clients feel comfortable in — the old room as it was provided very little of that.” Ms Evans thanked all the contributors for their generosity which said was ‘simply awesome.’

A winning computer initiative The world of online learning and skills will now be available to several Dargaville Pasifika families after 12 parents graduated from the second course of the Computers in Homes project. Organised by the Te Roroa Learning Assistance, a charitable group established in 1999 to provide literacy services to the Kaipara community, the graduates were given their refurbished computers to fur ther their children’s and their own learning. Earlier this year, manager of Te Roroa, Janet Te Rore, met with Reverend Kuli Fisi’iahu of the Wesleyan Church to see how TLA could help the Tongan community better meet their learning needs. Ms Te Rore says with increasing numbers of services asking users to send or fill out forms on line, it is essential to be computer literate. “Reverend Kuli knew that there was a need, not only to  From left: Tarati Williams and Te Roroa Learning further educational needs but Assistance administrator Stephanie Spraggon to empower the adults to learn computers too so they in turn could help the home be in an internet capable area, that a minimum of ten people each their children.” Last year, Te Torora ran the first pay $50 and complete the 20 hours CiH initiative for ten families with free tuition. Although the Northland Taniwha has had a tough season in 2013, they could be headed for success in a decade or so, if the achievements of the province’s Roller Mills players are any guide. Northland finished runner-up in the 10-team Roller Mills (under-13) tournament held in Silverdale between September 29 and October 6. Top Mangawhai gardens on show

The best gardens in Mangawhai will go on public display early next month as part of a fundraiser for the local kindergarten and Plunket. They can be viewed as part of the Palmers Planet Mangawhai Garden Ramble to be held on the weekend of November 9 and 10. First held in 2003 this event attracts loyal participants from the local area as well as those from further afield, says organiser Philippa Muller. With the garden ramble celebrating its 10th anniversary, thanks to assistance from the Zonta group of Mangawhai, high teas will be available at the historic Tara Lodge on both afternoons. Ms Muller says gardens from 20 properties can be viewed. “The gardens are of varying size, style and age. Several gardens have special attractions including ponds, artwork and historic buildings.” Mangawhai Kindergarten head teacher Michelle Forgarty says the event is the kindergarten’s main fundraiser for the year. “Mangawhai Kindergarten is a non-profit organisation so without fundraising we would not be able to provide the children with high quality educational resources.” Plunket community services leader May Seager says the ramble raises money that helps keep crucial services going. “Without funding efforts such as this, Plunket would have a tough time keeping up with maintenance on the clinic and providing activities and services for families. Thank you for the support.” Tickets cost $15 if bought before Labour Weekend and $20 if purchased after. Children under 12 are free if they are accompanied by an adult. Tickets are available at Fresh, Mangawhai; Mangawhai Books and Gifts; Jaques Superstore, Kaiwaka; Woody’s Winners, Wellsford; Hammer Hardware, Waipu; and Palmers Planet, Albany. 

Mangawhai artists score church building  by Colin Patterson

Hi tech safety net  by Alan Wheatley

One of the more impressive units on display that drew a lot of visitors at the recent Dargaville Fire Brigade’s 100th centenary celebrations was the hi-tech command Hazmat unit.

Artists in Mangawhai will soon have a place to call home, thanks to the generosity of the local Anglican parish. The congregation has gifted its 127-year-old church building to Mangawhai Arts Inc, with the understanding it will be moved from its present location. Arts Inc spokeswoman Jeanette Vickers says the group has 100 members. But it has no venue of its own to meet and hold exhibitions. “The only time we get together is the Annual General Meeting, which we hold in the pub and the club.” Mrs Vickers says the artists were gifted the building after member Jim Wintle heard it was available and made enquiries with the church. “The next step is to get it to the Mangawhai Community Park.” She says relocating the building is expected to cost around $40,000. “We had an art auction last anniversary weekend which raised $17,000. So we’re almost half way there.”

The artists want the building to go next to Mangawhai museum. However, any relocation requires approval from Kaipara District Council, which has been consulting with the community over possible uses for the 37ha park. Mrs Vickers says a governance structure for the park will have to be established and resource consents obtained. Moving the building will be a tricky proposition. “We can’t take the roof off. But the moving company says we can get it under the power lines — though there will be just 2cm to spare.” While a moving date has yet to be scheduled, Mrs Vickers says she hopes it will be in March or April next year. There will then be a significant amount of work to connect services and upgrade the building. “It’ll need a good paint job. But we won’t be able to touch the facade because it’s a heritage building. We’ll also need to put toilets in it.”

 The HazMat command unit with the equally impressive Bronto Skylift rescue unit, capable of reaching up five stories

This $1million plus unit is only deployed at more serious fires such as the fire that destroyed Fosters department store in Dargaville in 2009, but is the most travelled unit in the fleet based at Whangarei HQ. Whangarei Senior Fire Fighter Fraser Wright said the unit is built on a Dutch DAF chassis and is essentially a one stop mobile operations centre. “We set up fairly close to the centre of the fire so we can see everything. Cameras on high, extendable antennae are deployed and even at night they can see all the action.” What the cameras see is relayed back to widescreens in the truck’s control

room and Mr Wright says everything photographed is also digitally recorded. “What we do is advise and direct the senior officer on the fire ground and the pump operator — the fire fighter driving the water delivery. These are usually the only ones with radio units, but a lot of the new helmets now being rolled out have comms built in, so that too is changing.” Mt Wright says the idea of the hi-tech unit is that it sees everything. “Our primary aim is safety and containment. Because of the height of the cameras and their scope, we’ll see things the crew simply can’t see.” 

Historic lodge building seeks new owner

 by Colin Patterson

 by Colin Patterson

A liaison committee to bring Kaipara District Council closer to its constituents is set to be formed following a public meeting in Dargaville last week.

Dargaville’s Pono Lodge building is on the market, as the organisation that owns it copes with declining membership and rising costs.

The Kaipara Citizens and Ratepayers Association, Kaipara District Council commission chair, John Robertson, and Bruce Rogan from the Mangawhai Ratepayers and Residents Association met to debate the rates dispute arising from the cost blowout to the Mangawhai wastewater scheme. About 40 members of the public passed four  Kaipara Citizens and Ratepayers Association chairman, Bill Guest, addressing the meeting. resolutions supporting the lose $5.4 million of government funding Mangawhai residents. The lodge dates from 1915 and for much of its existence has operated from a building on Hokianga Rd, just up from the War Memorial Hall. Lodge grand master Paul Udall says the building has a lot of tradition and history. But the cost of maintaining it was becoming a burden for an organisation that meets there just once a month. “We’ve got a building that’s a bit large. In spite of its age it’s a prime position.  Dargaville’s Pono Lodge building is on the market for the first time in almost 100 years If someone wants to buy it, among the heritage items in Kaipara we’d be interested in talking District Council’s district plan. Ideally, Mr Udall would like to sell to for many years. However, the rotary club now meets elsewhere. Mr Udall a buyer who would be willing to lease it says the building has no other users, back. Antique heritage on show Northern Wairoa Lions Club president Jean Johnson is overjoyed with the response and the turnout to this year’s inaugural Antiques and Collectors’ afternoon. “The event was very successful,” says Jean. “People brought along their family heirlooms and treasures for all to enjoy, and many of them also did quite well in the auction part of the afternoon.”

There was certainly a wealth of beautiful and historic antiquities on display, spanning many decades and a whole range of categories. From valuable and finely wrought jewellery, through to art and porcelain ware, colonial linen and chandeliers and even items from our farming past such as a hand operated butter churn. Unlike popular television

show Antiques Roadshow there was no professional valuer on site — instead this was a celebration of quirky items with colourful pasts. The only nod to the sometimes surprising value of these artefacts was the price they achieved at auction once all comers had taken the opportunity to inspect and appreciate each piece. 

Tackle those chores while the sun shines Summer doesn’t just mean lazy days and balmy nights for the hard-working folks of the Kaipara.

Many of us have been waiting for a change in the weather to take care of vital outdoor chores, and now that summer is on the horizon it’s time to break out the chainsaw, mower, brush cutter and post hole borer to get them sorted. Spring growth needs reining in in most back yards — the perfect place to deploy the good old Masport and take some exercise. But for more tangled growth perhaps the spinning blades of a brush cutter or the nylon touch of the weed whacker are in order. Stihl’s new twist on gardening offers not only an electric, battery powered mower to compete with the proven performance of the Briggs and Stratton four-stroke, they also have interchangeable power equipment for chopping, edging, pruning and cutting vegetation down to size. For those with a bigger lawn to handle (or the need for a cup holder during a hard day’s mowing), ride ons have become extremely popular. A ride on mower can be a real asset — so long as

it remains reliable and well serviced. A trip to Godfrey’s Chainsaws and Mowers before the summer season starts will give your mower (ride on or manually operated) a clean bill of health for easy starts and better finishes. And don’t forget, this is the perfect time of the year to get busy with some outdoor painting — not just because of the fine weather on the way, but because of the huge annual paint sale at Fosters Home Decorating! A visit to their Resene colour shop will provide you with inspiration as well as good advice for your paint project. And between these two local professionals, your home will look great inside and out this summer! 

Labour Weekend

Doing it for the kids

Labour weekend heralds a season of great outdoor entertainment each year, and 2013 is shaping up to be another stunner here in the Kaipara. Add in the fun of Halloween to a three-day weekend and there’s plenty to do for young and old. The Aratapu Tavern have just finished a weekend of smooth and swinging sounds, with their yearly jazz fest drawing in the crowds on the 12th and 13th. Now the trappings of New Orleans are coming down and the cobwebs and ghosts are going up as Donice and her team prepare to host a proper Halloween spookfest — specifically for the kids of the Kaipara. The fright-night holiday is, after all, a chance for youngsters to dress up in

fun costumes, carve jack o’lanterns, enjoy well-deserved candy and have a good time — and at the Aratapu Tavern there’ll be the chance to get amongst all the action in a safe environment, with a whole day of activities like apple bobbing, a costume contest, games and treats on the 26th. And not a single stranger’s door need be knocked on! Over at the Mangawhai Tavern there’s fun aplenty for the older ‘kids’, with some rocking Kiwi sounds supplied

Labour Weekend The great outdoors beckons

SAVE BIG FOR SUMMER

Labour Weekend is nearly upon us and that means the start of another classic Kaipara summer filled with good fun in the great outdoors. Whether you’re into hiking, camping, boating, fishing, or just relaxing beside the lakes or at the beach, the natural environment we’re lucky to live in is one of the most beautiful in the world. If it’s time to get your boat out on the water, talk to Baty Thomas Engineering first — they are the experts when it comes to aluminium repairs, especially in marine applications. From simple welds to full superstructure rebuilds, they can get you ship-shape and ready to sail. Meanwhile, you’ll find vessels of a different nature at Dargaville Kayaks, your local supplier of the popular watercraft from Ocean Kayaks. Jason Dassler, owner of Dargaville Kayaks, is a champion kayak fisherman in his own right, with plenty of knowledge and experience to share. You can be sure he’ll offer good advice when it comes to setting up your new ‘silent and stealthy’ fishing kayak for summer — or just getting out on the water for fun!

For all things outdoors, a visit to Nola Sports is a chance to gear up with the latest and best. Right now Nola Sports have great deals on Ridgeline gear, but keen anglers will be right into the huge selection of rods, reels and tackle as well — perhaps with an eye on the brand new Predator torpedo system, an advanced and wicked looking piece of equipment which promises catch after catch. When that catch is in, what better way to celebrate than by lavishing some culinary attention on it? Great tuckers can be sizzled up on the barbecue with the help of Gas and Tyre Services — your stop for that all important swappa bottle. And if you’re getting together with mates for a barbecue, a little visit to the Empire Liquor Centre will afford you a pleasant drop or a cold brew to share as well.

KAIPARA LIFESTYLER

Electro pop from Munich Key security cuts both ways Modern technology is staying one step ahead of increasingly tech-savvy car thieves, with the latest generation of electronic alarm systems using sophisticated cryptographic techniques.

The electric car has proven to be a tough nut to crack, as weaning customers off the high-octane convenience of petrol and onto the planahead realities of drive-by-wire has thrown up serious PR problems. Range, recharge times, speed (or lack thereof) and some wacky designs have combined to make early adoption of this envirofriendly technology seem best suited to Hollywood A-listers — who happen to also have a Bentley in reserve for when the batteries run dry. But auto giant BMW have flipped the game on its head with the release of the i3, a neat, practical and thoroughly German interpretation of the e-car concept which is no mere four-door golf cart. The i3 ticks many of the right boxes by boasting a 0–60 time in the early sevens, 170 horsepower and a range of up to 140 kilometres on a single charge. The price, too, is less than many industry pundits guessed for a fully fledged electric BMW — not a budget marque by any standard. At $30,000 less than the competing Tesla Volt in the US market, this is quite a coup. The best news is twofold — first,

that the styling of the i3 is conservative by comparison to some predicted ‘future cars’ — less radical than the already accepted Smart ForFour, for example. Secondly, the range of the i3 can be boosted considerably with the addition of a tiny gasoline engine, feeding the battery like the diesel generator in a locomotive. Perhaps even more exciting is that the big brother of the i3 is lurking in the wings — the reputedly staggeringly high-tech and thoroughly ultramodern i8. The future is here — though they still can’t fly, unfortunately. 

This works well when it comes to securing your automotive investment — but proves a problem if expensive-to-replace key-fob clickers are lost or damaged. That is, at least, until this week, when Farrand and Mason’s latest locksmithing technology came on line. The local engineering firm have a long history of investing in security technology, and now they have brought the ability to ‘clone’ electronic alarm remotes to the West, with advanced computer equipment sourced from Remote King in Australia. The ability to replicate modern electronic alarm remotes adds to the already extensive repertoire of the Dargaville company, who can also cut keys from code, meaning that even badly damaged or completely missing keys can be replaced. The Remote King system

enables car owners to make a copy of their alarm, immobiliser or even garage door opener remote before it becomes lost, damaged or worn out, keeping a spare for emergencies. For some cars, there’s even the option of creating a whole new remote — even when the original is lost or destroyed. Currently the Remote King range covers over 80 popular models of vehicle, with more coming online every day. In an age of high-tech security, it’s great to have such a facility here in Dargaville — the only one of its kind north of Auckland. 

New team at the helm Keeping cars on the road and commercial vehicles hard at work is the name of the game for Dargaville mechanic and new business owner Daniel Parkinson, who has recently taken over as owner of Dargaville business Morfett Auto Services. While the iconic redroofed garage is now under new management, he stresses that the values which have made Morfett’s a trusted name in the West Kaipara are alive and well under his stewardship. Stepping up to the challenge of running his own bustling auto centre after ably assisting the previous owners, Daniel is joined by members of his family to deliver prompt repairs and timely service for his customers — many of whom have been loyal Morfett Autos supporters for many years. Yvonne takes charge of admin and reception, while Trevor is at Daniel’s side in the workshop, as  Daniel Parkinson is pleased to be at the helm of Morfett Autos well as establishing a new marine division to the company. a stir of interest surrounding the new This new development will see Morfett venture, though right now all hands are Autos stocking the popular Parsun range busy taking care of the change-over, and of outboard motors, from ‘seagull’ micro of course, making sure that a whole fleet units to larger motors for pleasure craft of Kaipara vehicles are road worthy for and angler’s launches. Wild weather fails to stop hospice supporters

Digging up history

Even some diabolical Dargaville weather failed to stop community-minded Kaipara residents from raising $1500 for the local hospice.

 Amid thigh-deep mud and remains of the old sawmill once on the site, developers of the new Countdown Supermarket site in Dargaville have unearthed a massive and very old rata tree. Site manager, Jason Blakiston said the tree probably predated Maori settlement. “It’s incredibly old, as the edge of the river was once there and this tree was already well buried.” The first stage of foundations is all but finished, with the sinking of more than 820 heavy-duty concrete piles.

Drumming a different beat The beat rolled on in Dargaville over the weekend with an African Drum and Dance Weekend. More than 40 drum aficionados came to Dargaville Intermediate School for a weekend master class with teacher Simon Fraser from Melbourne. Auckland teacher Monica Evans also gave advice on the best moves on the dance floor. The weekend ended with a public performance on Sunday afternoon, combining the rhythm of more than 20 drums with the energy and grace of body movement. 

 Liverpool Street band leader Chris Manning hands a cheque to Gina Thompson and Beth Suckling of Hospice Kaipara

They came to a fundraising dance last Friday featuring the band Liverpool Street at the Northern Wairoa Golf Club at Baylys Beach. Dancing continued as the wind blew and the rain came down in buckets. But then proceedings came to an abrupt end as a power cut turned everything into black. While the lights came back on quickly, thanks to the golf club’s standby generator, everyone decided that

because of the extreme weather, it was best to call it a night and head for home. But before everyone left, band leader Chris Manning presented a cheque of $1500 to Gina Thompson and Beth Suckling of Hospice Kaipara. Hospice Kaipara serves the Kaipara district. It covers from the Waipoua Forest to Maungaturoto, the Dargaville township and its surrounds, which includes from Poutu to Tangiteroria. 
