Preparing for cable landing New era for arts u by Joanna Manson

u by Anna Harding

Mangawhai is closer to becoming the New Zealand landing point for the Hawaiki Submarine Cable on its journey from the United States to Australia.

Dargaville and Mangawhai artists and locals came together at the newly renovated Muddy Waters Gallery to celebrate the Dargaville opening of the Kaipara Art Awards exhibition last Friday.

3

p Hawaiki cable landing station under construction at Bream Tail Farm entrance

The $500 million, 15,000km cable will traverse the ocean from Oregon, United States, to Sydney, Australia, with landings in American Samoa and Hawaii — as well as Mangawhai Heads bringing improved internet speed and a significant capacity increase when it’s turned on in June 2018. Work is underway at Bream Tail Farm where Hawaiki Submarine Cable NZ has been installing underground ducting in preparation for the arrival of the submarine fibre cable later this year. Stretching from under the sand dunes north of the Mangawhai Surf Club inland via Bream Tail Farm, the two kilometres of underground pipes allow the submarine cable to connect to the land-based fibre network at their Cable Landing Station at Cove Road. Site preparation works at the station began in June and virtually all the duct pipe has been installed using technology which allows the pipes to be installed

with minimal disturbance to the surface. Bream Tail Farm archaeologist Dianne Harlow and Shereen Worthington representing Te Uri o Hau made a preconstruction archaeological survey along the route in July, which identified nothing of interest and nothing has been found during construction works. “We are very pleased with our Bream Tail Farm works progress. Completion of the duct route means we are ready for the submarine cable landing late this year which is a major milestone. “The cable landing station construction is on target for installation of the specialised submarine cable terminal equipment in early 2018,” said Hawaiki’s NZ programme manager, Richard Howarth. A special communications exhibition at the Mangawhai Museum tells the story of communication in the region from early settler days to submarine cables and the Hawaiki project in particular. ¢

p From the left is Lynley Clements, Patricia Mortensen and Sheelagh John, three of the 80 plus people who came to the opening of the Kaipara Art Awards, at the Muddy Waters Gallery in Dargaville

After being at the Mangawhai Artists Gallery for the last two weeks, the 46 entries were transferred to the new white walls of the Muddy Waters Gallery. “It’s just such a privilege to be able to bring this back into Dargaville and for the people of Dargaville to have such easy access to it,” said Kaipara Art Awards chair John Pickworth. “I very much see it as being the pinnacle of achievement for this area for artists to strive for. After having

completed the refurbishment of the gallery, it’s a space that any city would be proud of. The last piece of the puzzle is managing the lighting.” In a speech on opening night John paid homage to the artists for putting their artwork out there to be judged, “as it takes a lot of courage.” The exhibition runs until Tuesday, October 31 and the gallery hours are Monday-Friday 11am-3pm and Saturdays 10am-1pm, at 43 Hokianga road. ¢

A butterfly experience Art inspired by nature u by Anna Harding

Dargaville Rotary’s newest exchange student, Johanna Weber from Switzerland, wasn’t expecting to find herself dressed as a monarch butterfly in front of hundreds of people, while in New Zealand.

Ex-Otamatea High School student Kohl Tyler-Dunshea is making it big in the New Zealand art scene. She gained first place in the 2017 Estuary Art and Ecology Art Awards, with her installation ‘Offerings’ and collaborated with New Zealand shoe company Merchant1948, with their spring/summer collection.

The 17-year-old is here for a year and will live with four different host families and attend Dargaville High School. It was through friends of her current host family she ended up modelling Patricia Mortensen, Robyn Mitchell and Averil Wheatley’s entry in the recent Wearable Arts extravaganza. Off-stage, Johanna is finding plenty to keep her busy. “I really like it so far. It’s small, but the community is so strong.” Rugby, netball and cricket are all new to Johanna. “We have sports like volleyball, soccer, uni hockey and

Kohl studied at the Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. She said winning the award felt “incredible, it is my first year out of art school so winning a prize like that was a very big confidence boost. “Growing up in a rural town, Paparoa, encouraged me to venture outside and make my own fun. It encouraged me to look at the environment and create work about what I found.” Her work often revolves around themes of ecology, globalism and relational aesthetics. “Ecology is deeply

Pool open day

5

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

u by Anna Harding

A new management committee has been set up to maximise the use of the Kauri Coast swimming pool and is inviting the community along to a free open day on Saturday, October 21, 12pm-6pm.

To the mayor There is clearly something very much amiss in the State of Kaipara. We cannot hold a CEO for more than a few months and now we cannot hold on to a duly elected Mayor for little more than a year. Presumably Mr Gent has good reasons for his resignation although he won’t disclose them. At the very least he should be offering his humble apologies to ratepayers, but I haven’t noted that yet. But we seem to be doing very well in some areas. Highest paying local authority with

20 per cent of staff paid in excess of $100k per annum, goodness knows why, this is hardly Fonterra; largest debt burden per ratepayer; some of the highest rates in all of New Zealand. And not a great deal to show for it. I sincerely hope that some capable, determined, community minded people put their names forward for the February mayoral election. The Kaipara District is overdue for competent leadership and a commitment to change for the better. Eric Smitton (Ratepayer)

Logging trucks p Members of the new Kauri Coast community swimming pool, management committee

“We’re excited about it because we’ve got a great facility, but it’s been underutilized,” said committee member Roxanne Kelly. “We want to start with a big bang,” so the open day will feature family games, prizes, a bombing competition, aqua classes, a bouncy castle and more. Dargaville and Te Kopuru swimming clubs and committee members will be there to talk to people as well — with ideas and comments welcome. The committee came together in August and it’s members each represent a different group or organisation. John Mclean is there for the elderly, Vern Stevens for education and as a pool trustee representative, Roxanne Kelly for Sport Northland, Carlrine and Ross Gillespie for Swimming Northland, Darlene Lang Gent for the Kaipara District Council, Debbie Evans for health, Scott Linklater for Community Leisure Management (CLM) — the company contracted to run the pool — and Lance Warmington as the business advisor.

Since coming together in August, they have discussed new building ideas and formed a building committee. They also want to encourage more elderly residents to use the hydro pool, look into a new pool toy, sports that can be played in the pool, making it 50 metres more often and hosting more carnivals. 2017 Council Meetings:

Kaipara Community Health Trust The Kaipara District Council invite expressions of interest to fill a trustee vacancy for the Kaipara Community Health Trust (KCHT). KCHT has the objective to ensure there are health services available locally for people in our community to access. The KCHT has been highly effective over the last 19 years in protecting and enhancing the services available on the Dargaville Hospital site. The new Trustee will be able to build on this legacy by advocating on behalf of all Kaipara communities and ensuring, through good governance, that the Trust’s current assets are well-managed for current and future community needs. The Council are seeking to appoint a trustee from residents in the Dargaville Ward. They will join 11 other members in quarterly meetings of the Trust and other sub-committee meetings as required. This is an unpaid voluntary appointment which is eligible for reimbursement of some travel expenses. Expressions of interest are invited from citizens who are passionate about the provision of local health services. Please express interest in becoming a Trustee by writing to Linda Osborne at Private Bag 1001, Dargaville 0340; or by emailing losborne@kaipara. govt.nz Please detail why you are interested in becoming a Trustee and the skills that you would bring which might benefit the Trust. 100 Years ago Dargaville Borough: Council Minutes That a crossing be constructed at a cost of ten pounds from Victoria Street to the side entrance used jointly by the Wairoa Stores and Mr C Keane and that the work be proceeded with at once. The Engineer is authorised to proceed with the formation tarring and sanding of the footpath at Mangawhare from Murdock Street to the corner of Mt Wesley Road and the footpath on the North East side of Mr Carr’s residence in Hokianga Road. The option of shelling may be considered for the footpath in Mangawhare. In connection with the Borough Engineer’s suggestion to purchase a road grader we have asked that a statement shall be prepared as to the amount of necessary work that could be carried out with a grader. We have authorised the ordering of a street water fountain to be fixed at the Junction of Hokianga Road and Victoria Street at a cost of 30 pounds 10 shillings. The type selected is the “Continuous Bubbling Fountain”

Unsealed roads require regular laying of maintenance aggregate. If tyres are low, road users can run the risk of punctures on freshly laid metal. This larger material is particularly prone to puncturing worn tyres, but is a necessary requirement during the winter months to ensure the roads are still safely traversable. Please take caution when travelling on freshly laid aggregate, and check the condition of your tyres — especially if you live on the unsealed network.

“I came up with the idea of making outlines around eight years ago while living in Australia in a country town which had a small forge. I would dabble in making things like candelabras and other decorative items in wrought iron,” said Mike. A close friend and an avid Holden fan was looking for something different for his car collection and Mike took it upon himself to create his first FJ Holden wrought iron piece of art and the orders have been coming in since. “The amount of interest was overwhelming and we started to get requests to make other sorts of cars, trucks, motorcycles and even a tractor,“ he says.

The free programme is open to learner drivers who need help getting their restricted licence, with volunteer mentors taking participants on driving lessons in Dargaville and Whangarei. Mentors must have held a full licence for more than two years, have no criminal convictions and commit to a minimum of four hours mentoring per week. They are also required to attend a one-day training course. An automatic vehicle has been provided for the programme by Northland Road Safe Trust. “People do this to give back to the community and to help our youth get their licence and get into employment. A lot of it is based

What started as a one-off hobby has now turned out to be a small business for semi-retired Mike and he says he’s the only one in the world making these wall hangings. “Orders have started to come in and I found myself having to employ the parttime services of my neighbour Trayton. “Trayton has picked up some great life skills and has now mastered the art of welding and spray painting — he’s awoken his creative side as well. “We are now hopefully looking forward to putting Dargaville on the New Zealand map for the home of wrought iron artwork.” An example of Mike’s work can be found at Dargaville’s Auto One. ¢

around getting employment,” said Te Roroa programme coordinator Stephanie Pattison. She added that employers have an increasing need for people with a manual licence, so Te Roroa is asking for financial support to purchase a manual vehicle. So far this year, 46 people have come through the course, 12 people are taking it at present and there are more on a waiting list. ”We would hate for this programme to stop, because it is benefiting quite a lot of people in this community,” said Te Roroa tutor, Ashlee Wati. Ramble tickets on sale School’s positive report u by Joanna Manson

u by Anna Harding

After a wet winter, spring has sprung in Mangawhai just in time for the release of tickets to the upcoming annual Palmers Planet Garden Ramble on November 11 and 12.

Otamatea High School has achieved a positive Education Review Office report, after an assessment at the end of last term.

Garden coordinator John Dickie says the 18 gardens involved are alive with buds, flowers, fresh growth, bees and other insects. Coming into its 14th year of operation the event continues to grow in popularity with a record 500 tickets sold to last year’s ramble. “We are careful to listen to past comments and feedback when considering and selecting the final lineup of gardens each year,” says John. This years ramble will showcase seven gardens which have never featured before in the event. “Trending in Mangawhai and immediate surrounds are smaller gardens, and many of the gardens in

this year’s line-up reflect this. However, there are still some grand and well established large gardens on offer that can occupy a keen rambler for well over an hour. “All proceeds from the Palmers Planet Mangawhai Garden Ramble support the very good causes of our local Plunket and the local Kindergarten, both of which are invaluable grass-roots organisations that rely heavily on this important community fundraiser,” said Mr Dickie. Early bird tickets are on sale for $20 per person until Monday, October 30. Regular tickets thereafter are $25 per person. Children under 12 are free when accompanied by a paid ticket holder. ¢

ERO reviews the performance of all New Zealand schools and early learning services around every three years. The report stated that since 2014, “the school has revitalised its approach to lifting student achievement and responding to children whose learning and achievement need acceleration. The school has a holistic approach to raising student achievement and developing lifelong learners. This approach is well planned and is supported by the board, school leaders, staff and the community, including hapu and iwi.” The report also noted the “significant improvement” in the school’s overall NCEA achievement over the last three

years, evident across all groups of students, including Maori. “The school’s processes and actions effectively help to achieve excellence and equity for learners. This is mainly attributable to the school having built a positive school culture supported by powerful relationships and partnerships with parents, whanau and community, together with effective school leadership and governance.” Principal Rachel Clothier-Simmonds said “we are very proud of this report which reflects a real team effort. “Thanks once again to all the students, staff and community who have made this a reality at Otamatea High School.” ¢

2017 APPEAL Awhi atu awhi mai

Lifting the spirits of each other

From farming to the bends An afternoon out in the boat to dive for scallops turned into a different type of adventure for Maungaturoto farmer, Logan Diamond. “I was out diving in the Whangarei Harbour at a favourite spot and had been down a few times. On my next dive, I started feeling a bit average but kept going, and before long I wasn’t feeling very good at all,” Logan says. “I must have come up too fast or too many times, and once I was back in the boat that last time, I really felt like it was all closing in on me. Down on the sea bed, I had felt like I was going to vomit and the feeling just got worse. Something definitely wasn’t right. I felt like a bad mix between sick and drunk.” Once back on shore, Logan vomited, but still tried to make it home, where he was found by his wife Zaria, asleep in his ute and still in his wetsuit. Panic kicked in and Zaria stripped him of his wetsuit, dressed him and got him into her car to take him to Whangarei Hospital. “I was panicking but didn’t want to show our two-year-old that, so I just hurried to get him into my car to take him to hospital. I knew it wasn’t good. On arrival, they said a nitrogen bubble might have passed through his brain and by that point I was a trembling mess but holding it together for him and our baby,” Zaria says. “I felt better when they said the rescue helicopter was on its way to collect him and take him to Auckland, as I knew it meant he would be getting help faster. Without that helicopter, I don’t know if he would still be here today for his kids and me.” The Nor thland Rescue Chopper transported him to North Shore Hospital, t h e c o un t r y ’s s p e c i a li s t h o s p i t a l for dealing with the bends . Logan remembers it well, despite his condition. “ The guys in the helicopter were so professional. They came in and spoke with me before the flight and made me more comfortable about what was ahead. During the flight, they talked to me the whole way and kept me informed – even when we were on the roof of the other hospital, they kept reassuring me.” To read more about Logan’s story nest.org.nz

Dargaville teen Jai Selkirk, 16, is in a team of four that won the Word — The Front Line poetry slam competition in Auckland and his solo performance of his poem, ‘True story’, has made a big impression, with over one million views online and counting. A poetry slam is a competition where poets recite their original work. “It’s weird, it’s crazy. I was told it had been posted and then 50,000 people had seen it in the first morning,” said Jai. “True Story is about the stereotypes on my culture, being Maori and about how I’ve witnessed what people say about it and my thoughts on it. “I hope people will put it into thought and try stop labeling everyone by all these stereotypes — for any culture and religion.” Jai and his team have been invited to perform in two Melbourne events this December, the ‘Upside Down Youth Poetry Conference’ and the ‘Melbourne Spoken Word Prize,’ one of the largest slams in the Southern Hemisphere. During the trip, they will represent New

Zealand at the Trans-Tasman youth poetry slam. A givealittle page has been made, to raise funds. Jai encourages others to “just go for it, try all the weird

Rubbish heroes to visit u by Joanna Manson

Love Kaipara will be hosting a free waste minimisation event in both Dargaville and Mangawhai with the help of ‘two no-waste nomads’ — zero waste education heroes — Hannah Blumhardt and Liam Prince. They are calling into Kaipara during their ‘Rubbish Trip’ tour around New Zealand aimed at educating Kiwis about living without waste. Hannah and Liam will draw on their own research and two years of experience living with zero waste. Love Kaipara educator Victoria del la Varis-Woodcock says: “Curbing the proliferation of plastics and waste in general is an urgent environmental problem with a social answer — change spreads by people copying others.” “These demonstrations in Dargaville and Mangawhai are a great opportunity for Kaipara residents to get tips from the experts.” The Mangawhai event will be held in the Library Hall between 3-5pm Sunday October 22 while the Dargaville event will be held in the Town Hall foyer between 6-8pm Tuesday, October 24. ¢

Together they’ve made choosing carpet, wood flooring and vinyl easier for hundreds of home owners in Dargaville and beyond, enlisting the help of Jarrod in the early 2010s as an apprentice. Labour Weekend is a top time for getting outdoors and enjoying the natural environment which makes our region so attractive to both tourists and locals. The change in the weather combined with longer evenings marks the beginning of a season of fishing, hiking, beach walking and more. But there’s another way to appreciate the scenery that’s been brought to reality by a local team who have seen the potential of part of our history, and made it freshly relevant today. When Dargaville was a centre for the timber trade above all else, the railway was one of our two main arterial routes to the rest of the country. Rails used to extend right through downtown to the river, and looped around to follow the upper reaches of the Northern Wairoa, stretching across to link us with the national network. When the big cargo trains stopped rolling they left behind a section of track that spans some very scenic country, allowing a new perspective on the land which was once only seen from the footplate of those locomotives. Nowadays the rolling stock on this section of railway line isn’t so large, and

the cargo carried is no longer cut timber. A group of local tourism entrepreneurs have managed to turn the railway from Dargaville to the nearby riverside settlement of Tangowahine into a tourist attraction that’s unique in the North — in fact, there’s nothing like it at all on this side of the Waikato. By opening up the line to a fleet of bright red, electrically powered rail carts, they’ve brought about a whole new way to see the sights, and in doing so they’ve provided a boost for the local tourist trade while also preserving a bit of history. The self-controlled rail carts allow visitors to see the Northern Wairoa river from the rails, re-living the route once plied by steam trains and big cargo haulers as it winds through the green hills of the river valley. Travelling

at their own pace — and, thanks to the rails, absolutely unable to get lost along the way — visitors young and old can appreciate this part of the country in a whole new way. In its first fledgling years of operation the entire project has been a booming success, attracting tourists from both overseas and closer to home. In fact, the rail cart excursion is proving just as popular as that other classic way of seeing the sights from a fresh perspective — taking to the harbour to follow in the path of the Kaipara’s historic ships. Both activities are a link back to the past, flourishing in the present, and looking toward a near future when tourism — especially the eco-friendly variety — ranks as highly in terms of the local economy as hauling timber by steam train once did. ¢

LABOUR Weekend

An annual off-road adventure u by Andy Bryenton

The Tangihua ranges will once again echo to the sound of off-road bikes blasting down the trails this Labour Weekend, as the annual Tangiteroria Trail Ride kick-starts once again. Lesson one - it’s great fun to start a brand new summer of off-road riding with some of the best views you’ll see from behind a set of handlebars. Every year organisers do their best to top the attraction of last year’s event, setting up a varied and engaging course that’s not too hard and not too soft, either. Experienced riders will relish the challenge and soak in the scenery, while those who are just out to have a great time with the kids - and hopefully keep up with them - will find this extensive route exhilarating rather than debilitating. There’s always plenty of hot food and cold drinks back at base camp to fuel up for a second round. This year the main loop stretches for an impressive thirty five kilometres, encompassing farm and forest. Special extra add-ons have been developed by the devious track designers for those looking for a supreme challenge - options which deviate from the main track and lead to some gnarly terrain. Expect to hear the snarls of high horsepower as some of our more competitive local riders get to grips with these sections. With quad bikes and even eight-wheeldrive Argo machines welcome on

LABOUR Weekend

Power and precision pedigree u by Andy Bryenton

When the automobile was first invented, it’s likely that the folks responsible — by all accounts European gentlemen of the Victorian era — didn’t look at their creation and immediately speculate about going out into the coach yard and laying down some donuts. But it wasn’t long before the idea of racing these new replacements for the horse became a reality. And it’s the same for the side-by-side UTV off-roader. Made for the hunter and farmer, it took a little while for the makers of these machines to see that what they had actually created was a stripped down, compact version of the old Baja ‘sand

rail’ concept. A little background. Back in the 1960s it became good fun to build light, tube framed ‘beach buggies’ to hit the dunes with. VW Beetles were chopped down en masse to build these machines, and soon the idea of doing away with the Volkswagen at all came to the fore. Go to an off-road event today, though, ONE

p Full noise — Can Am’s Maverick X3 provides all the thrills you could desire off road

and there are a couple of names which dominate. One of them is the Can Am Maverick, and partly due to its status at the top of the table, it’s been locked in a no hold barred speed and power war with its rivals for some years now. Which explains something about the latest model of this recreational atomic blast on wheels. This is a boxer locked in a grudge match cycle of training and knockout bouts. It’s as pared down, light, muscular and athletic as a top mixed-martial-arts fighter. Scratch built with a wider track than anything else in its class, fitted with massive Fox Podium shocks to literally float above rugged terrain, and packing 154 horsepower derived from an intercooled, turbocharged Rotax ACE engine, this is a masterclass on

how power can equal fun. Off road, the Maverick X3 is in its element, and it’s even able to pull that most eloquent of magic tricks, making a competent trailblazing driver from even hesitant and somewhat ham-fisted novices. With a little skill and a bit of time clocked behind the wheel, the professionals conduct the X3 like a symphony, in power-sliding, high-jumping form which brings out the little kid in everyone watching. Put it this way — the Ariel Nomad came at this kind of driving from the world of slightly unhinged road cars. They’d already built a machine which could mangle your face with g-forces and wind resistance. But Can Am started with a sensible farm and hunting vehicle, and punched right through the same conclusion to a realm beyond. ¢

Cultivating what lies beneath u by Andy Bryenton

Since the development of the three-field system in medieval times, farmers have known that the turning of the seasons means it’s time to turn the soil. While those early farmers had little understanding of the microcosmos beneath their feet, modern agriculture thrives on caring for the under-soil environment, aerating it before planting for maximum results. That’s true across all kinds of farming — from growing crops to growing pasture, and it means that challenges arise when conditions are exceptionally damp, as they have been during our recent winter and early spring. While a good quantity of soil moisture bodes well for the future — staving off the threat of a summer that’s altogether too dry — right now there’s a limited window of opportunity for necessary activities such as de-pugging paddocks where cattle have, by necessity, been seeking feed in muddy conditions. It all comes down to the world of benevolent bacteria and microorganisms which live amid the roots and tillers of both pasture grasses and crops such as maize. To be truly healthy, these helpers to the growth process require all the things which a larger, more conventional plant does — aside from direct light. Water is there in abundance, but what is needed now is aeration — turning the soil to promote the health of oxygen-hungry micro-species. That’s why you’ll see a frenzy of activity in the fields as spring finally dries out, with disc harrows, deep tine cultivators and other

ploughing equipment taking the place of the old-fashioned team of horses or bullocks with their single plowshare. At the same time, an analysis of the soil can determine which nutrients are lacking, leading to precision mapping of pastures and the application of targeted fertiliser components. This combination of chemical science, biology and

industrial-sized implements is part of the agricultural revolution which has seen farm yields triple worldwide in the last five decades. New to the game, at least locally, has been the application of multi-function pneumatic seed drills, which can team up with cultivation implements to aerate the soil, apply seed and also dose out fertiliser with

a precision that’s measured in mere centimetres. As the big machines hit the fields to begin preparing a crop of fresh pasture or vital maize for winter feed, it’s interesting to note that these huge, advanced implements are tending to the very smallest living things on the farm — the micro-biota which are the foundations of better production. ¢

“Well, I dunno Dog, I reckin maybe you shood stand for bein’ the mare.” Gidday readas. Wen the Boss said this ova smoko ina homested kitchen wiv his skoolteecha gerlfrend Sharlene, I wandered outa the kitchin and hada look at Sharlene’s mare an her new foal ina house paddick, and had a wunder. Mare looks fine where she’s standin’, so wots Boss on about this time? The Sharlene ixplained that the council mare, witch she spelt proper, hada Y.O.R. ona end. “Mayor, Billy,” she sed. “Yersee we will be lookin’ for a new Mayor ‘cos the new one is goin’ back ter his farm it seems, an’ we’ll havta have another ‘lection. Tell yer wot readas, wen she sed another ‘lection my eyes went all glassy an’ I hadta have a lie down ona door mat. Y’see, alla boss an’ Sharlene bin talkin’ about ina past cupla weeks is blimmin politicks! Boss said ter me policks is all about who’s doin’ wot to

The ‘lection cost millyins, an we didn’t get a result until all the pollytishins had a big talk fest. “Ina end, its us taxipaers wot get the short end ofa stick,” sed Boss. “Lookit old Winnie Peters. Talkin’ up a storm wiv the Nashnil Party, ana Juicynda and her Greeny mates, seein’ who can give him the best job. But hoo was runnin’ the country ina meentime? “So now our council gotta find a new leeda, an’ that means us taxipaers gotta stump up even more munny, like thirty thousind smackers, ter finda new Mare.” (whoops, sorry readas, Mayor.) “That’s why I rekind you cood stand for ‘lection. Great Eye Dog, good voice wen yer ‘pritendin’ ter be a huntaway. Not skared ter give some curry wen the sheep aren’t fallin’ inter line. Leader of tha pack, an all that.” Well readas, I sunk even lower with me front paws crossed and looked sadly at Sharlene. She had bit ofa giggle then.

“Nah, Billy, yore safe hear ona farm. Tha only chain you need wurry about is on yer kennel, for wen yer needs tying if that labrador gerlfrend of your’s gits too ameriss.” I pritendid not to take any notice of that. I mite get over th paddicks an’ through to tha lifestyle block before Sharlene notices nek time eh? “Anyway,” sed Boss. I reckin the Mayors job is pritty thankliss, ‘cos the old council racked up millions of dollas debt, an’ we’ll be payin’ it back for donkeys yeers. The new govinmint in Wellingtin should write off the debt, an’ start agin. It’s not the new counsil’s fault. Or us ratepayers. “If we gotta pay old debt, nothin’ gonna get done. Our roads are fulla pothols for a start! Then Sharlene hada idea. “Whattaya say Billy. Boss for Mayor you reckin?” Well readas — shooda seen Boss eyes go glassy. “C’mon Dog,” he said. “Betta chek tha troffs water.” I followed Boss ter the big red quod bake. The trustees of the trust therefore invite applications for assistance from students of Dargaville High School or from any person on a student’s behalf. Application forms are available from the school office, the Dargaville Branch of ANZ or Hammonds Law, Solicitors. To enable consideration by the trustees, completed applications must be delivered to the High School office or the offices of Hammonds Law by 5.00pm on Friday the 10th of November 2017.
