Tide of change for Northland u by Andy Bryenton

Northland has turned blue, with the National Party winning not just the electorate but a broad mandate to form a government nationwide following Saturday’s general election.

Voting streams were steady on Saturday in the eastern area, including polling at Mangawhai. Meanwhile, at Maungatūroto on Friday and Saturday, queues of voters turned up to cast their ballots. National Party candidate Grant McCallum arrived on Saturday morning with his family to register their votes. He was relaxed and had no expectations regarding the election outcome. Mr McCallum was quite philosophical but also positive at the same time. There was a similar pattern at Paparoa and Ruawai, often with local residents catching up on some neighbourly conversation after exiting the polling booths. Dargaville’s polling stations remained steadily busy all day, with queues out the door in some locations. In total, 38,899 votes were cast by Northlanders, delivering a victory for the National Party and Mr McCallum. He was elected with 14,245 votes, beating the Labour Party’s Willow-Jean Prime by a margin of more than 5,000. Shane Jones of New Zealand First came in third, with the ACT Party in fourth place. “It’s a real privilege and a real thrill,” said the newly incumbent Mr McCallum. “Big thanks to all those who voted for me and for the party, and a big thanks to all the volunteers and all those who have helped make that victory possible.” Speaking from his Kaipara farm, the National MP reflected on how he’d be changing pasture and a quad bike for the corridors of power. “It’s the last time I’ll be doing this kind of thing for quite a while. I’ve just shifted

some animals out the back of the farm, but I’ve got to be in Wellington tomorrow for meetings. I’m really looking forward to representing the people of the north, the greatest province in the country, that is miles above the rest.” The other big winner on the night was the New Zealand First Party, returning to parliament with eight seats, though not with the Northland electoral seat, which Shane Jones had hoped for. Mr Jones described his leader, Winston Peters, as ‘the ultimate political phoenix’

as supporters celebrated in the Bay of Islands. A full 20 per cent of votes are yet to be counted, which may change some results around the country, but the biggest question for now remains that of New Zealand First’s role in a coalition government. Those special votes and a rare parliamentary overhang may necessitate a deal being struck between Mr Peters, the ACT Party and the National Party in days to come. ¢

Sporting goodwill tour Why, and when, should I review my will? u by Andy Bryenton

Twelve members of the Poutō Warriors netball team and six support staff are headed to Fiji this December for an international outreach and an exciting tournament.

p A quiz night midway through the year and another planned for November 11 will take 12 local netballers to Fiji, where they wish to promote international sporting friendship

“This is a great chance for the team to experience another nation and culture and to expand their horizons. It’s not only a chance to play netball at an international level, but also an opportunity to extend some international friendship,” says Roseanne Low, who is helping to coordinate fundraising for the trip. Tickets are already paid for, fundraising continues with a big quiz night and dinner scheduled for November 11, and car washes and hāngī for October. A previous midwinter Christmas-themed quiz helped fill the funding coffers, and coaches, players and their families are confident that with local support, the young team will be able to hit the courts in Fiji against international rivals. While the young athletes and their supporters save toward their goal,

there’s another collection happening in parallel to benefit their hosts. Fijian netball teams and other sports for youth are lacking in funding. They often cannot afford proper equipment which would allow young people there to pursue their sporting aspirations. As a very direct form of assistance for our Pacific neighbours, the Poutō Warriors team will take some extra luggage with them on their trip — donated sporting goods to give to needy schools and children. If you have any good quality but under-used sporting goods, especially for team games young people enjoy, these items would be gratefully received by Fijian teams. As life changes, so do your circumstances, assets and wishes. A thorough and up-to-date will ensure your wishes are respected when you die and simplifies the administration of your estate for your grieving loved ones. Having children, getting married, or separating from your partner all have an impact on your will. Getting married automatically renders your will invalid, but separating from your partner does not. If you had previously included your ex in your will, they will be entitled to receive that gift from you unless you update it. Acquiring significant assets, such as a new property or an inheritance, should also prompt you to think about your will. These days, families can be complex, meaning previous relationships, children, multiple properties or family trusts all need to be considered when making your will, or else it may leave your will wide open to be challenged — a stressful process for all involved. It’s also useful to consider non-financial matters, such as who will look after your children and pets, what happens to your treasured personal effects, and your funeral arrangements. Your will also helps to facilitate the ‘estate administration’ process when you die by requiring you to appoint an executor(s) and trustee(s). The executor’s job is to administer the estate (eg act as a contact person). Once all of your assets have been realised and the discretionary role of the executor has finished, the

trustee(s) hold the assets on trust until such time as the assets are distributed to the beneficiaries of your will. Usually, the same person or people will be both executor and trustee. You can appoint anyone as your executor/trustee, and you can appoint more than one, but it’s important to consider your choice carefully. The person/people you trust to carry out this important role may change over the years. When someone dies without a will, it often takes significant time, effort, and cost to deal with their estate. As a reminder, to be valid, your will must be in writing, signed and witnessed correctly, intended by you to take effect as a will, and completed when you have legal capacity. Working with a lawyer experienced in life planning is the most efficient way to create a comprehensive, valid will that achieves your intentions and gives you peace of mind that your loved ones will be able to focus on celebrating your life, not dealing with your life admin when you pass away. WRMK’s experienced life planning team is well-placed to help you prepare or update your will. ¢

Council report card — Trail ride traditions upheld Rachael Williams Have you managed to achieve, or make progress, on your election promises? With this having been my first time campaigning, I decided that my focus would be on areas that concerned me as a long-time Kaipara ratepayer. Growth pressures, respecting the environment and its limitations (extending greenspace and amenities where possible) , water security, wastewater infrastructure and rates affordability. These are all important ongoing issues for our district. I am always mindful of our ratepayers and the financial pressure they face in our cost of living crisis. This is constantly on my mind and features in the questions I ask of staff at briefings and meetings. Households and businesses are finding it hard going. To make any real progress, we need to first understand the issues our district faces and work together to find solutions. What have been the obstacles to achieving change? Navigating central government legislation and reforms has been challenging. Once the election has run its course, we will hopefully have some certainty to work with. The ongoing review of our District Plan will shape the future of our district, and the working party is integral to this process moving forward. How do you plan to deliver good value for your constituents in council, going forward? Always asking questions, seeking an understanding of processes and how we can achieve better outcomes and cost savings where possible. With the majority of us being new to the council, I feel we do work well together and ratepayers are front and centre of our decision-making. Council discuss rating change

Who pays for forestry roading?

u by Andy Bryenton

u by Andy Bryenton

A nationally acclaimed expert on rating systems has addressed the Kaipara District Council as elected members debate changing how local rates are calculated.

The impact of forestry activities on the district’s roading network has come under scrutiny as the time comes to choose who pays for roading repairs necessitated by this industry.

October’s council briefing session featured a presentation by Stephen Halliwell, author of the best practice guide for rating reviews in 2017 and 2021. He has 30 years of experience helping councils fine-tune their rating systems, and is currently working p Councillors have a major decision to make regarding rates: to follow most other districts and towns with a shift to rating on capital value with eight councils on or to stick with land value calculation similar matters. Kaipara District Council members heard last week that forestry trucks, vital to timber production, add approximately $46 million to the roading repair budget every 20 years. Sale date changed A fundraising sale planned for Maungatūroto, scheduled for October 21, has been delayed until Saturday, December 2. “The sale will still be between 10am and 3pm at the Maungatūroto Country Club on December 2, and we welcome any contributions,” says organiser Albie Paton at The Den in Bickerstaffe Road.

Correction Last week, we erroneously identified Mark Stewart as NZ Post’s chief operating officer; he has been succeeded by Mr Brendon Main. Additionally, CourierPost has been brought together with NZ Post under a single ensign. Information on Christmas sending cut-off dates is now available on the NZ Post website nzpost.co.nz/christmas.

Maungatūroto Primary School held its annual flower show and pet day last Friday, with more than 40 entries in the pet section. Calves, lambs, a goat kid, chickens and snails were taken by their excited owners to school for the day. Earlier, learners spent time finalising their entries for the flower show, which was judged later in the morning. Prizes and ribbons were handed out by the judges for the many classes the children participated in. The Lifestyler dropped in with the camera to capture some of the excitement.

p Taewa and Friesian calf Peach took out lots of first-place ribbons and proudly showed them all off

p Archie and Speckle Park calf Rosie were proud to display their many ribbons between classes

p Kennedy and Cookie were more than happy to show their ribbons for the camera

p Chiara and her goat kid Willow had a successful morning at the pet day

Maungatūroto Crop Swap is back with monthly meetings and will continue during the summer months.

p Erica, Susan and Angelica engaged in the recent Maungatūroto Crop Swap and enjoyed their time swapping fresh produce and spending time together

“The crop swap was started six years ago by Michael and Jocelyn McKenzie. Many people would gather to trade seeds, plants and fresh produce. The couple left the area, and Mandy Lee took charge of the meetings, but interest waned, and it was left to me. When Covid came, it went into recess and three-plus years on — we’re finally back,” says organiser Liz Ferry. Liz’s friends prompted her to revive the crop swap — it began the meeting again earlier this month. “Only four people showed up, but since then, there has been very strong interest around our local communities from Kaiwaka to Dargaville. I get satisfaction from producing great food

and knowing people benefit from the excess that we share with others. It is positive that people are eager to get fresh produce without the significant supermarket costs. “Our philosophy is that food should be free. The crop swap concept means even if people don’t have anything to bring with them, they can still come away with fresh fruit and vegetables to take home.” The next meeting is on Friday, November 17, with more due throughout the summer months. For more details, see the Facebook group page. “I enjoy networking with other growers and meeting new residents, and I am hoping the concept will spread to other communities in the future.” ¢

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Loans should be paid I would just like to say how I was totally taken aback by the article regarding a clean slate for the Mangawhai Museum Board. They are asking the Kaipara District Council to forgive two $50,000 loans. This is just unbelievable to expect the rest of the ratepayers of the Kaipara District to forget. The museum must have had a business plan when they borrowed this money. The Kaipara District Council is not a bank, even if it were, the museum

would be paying the loan plus interest. I suggest they approach a bank, so that they can then pay the money that is owed to the ratepayers. People are doing it hard. We do not have extra money to waste, and we presume the $100,000 would have to be passed on to the ratepayers or other savings found somewhere. Time for the Mangawhai Museum to pay up in full and join the real world where debts have to be paid off. Maurice and Sue

The Let’s (Re) Connect Expo was supported by many community groups. It featured representatives from local and central government, healthcare, mental health, financial hardship assistance, employment, fitness, education, advocacy and support groups, to name only a few. The Dargaville Dalmatian Hall was packed with professionals discussing their areas of expertise and, as noted by many attendees, how they all overlap and complement each other. “It’s just great to see everyone together in one room,”

said Dargaville librarian Molly MolvingLilo, who represented the town’s hub of literature, learning and connectivity. “The greatest value we all gain from this meeting is simply the connections,” said Cath Cowley of SOS Kaipara. “As well as meeting our colleagues, lots of people come and go from jobs in our sector, and it’s important to know who to call and who to talk to so we can best help others.” The packed hall provided an opportunity to meet and greet peers in the social

WE ARE YOUR PROFESSIONALS Fresh twist on classic concept Chemist’s new address u by Andy Bryenton

Dargaville will soon boast its own temperance bar, a place to enjoy sophisticated cold drinks with zero alcohol but with all the flavour and colour of cocktails. The Good Life Store has borrowed the idea from the classic soda fountains of the US and the temperance bars of the UK, where designer mixed drinks, ice creams, coffees and sweets provided a familyfriendly alternative to pubs and saloons. As part of this expansion, they have also invested in a nitro coffee machine, which delivers a whole new way to enjoy the world’s favourite pick-me-up. “The idea of a temperance bar fits in with our summer hours, and we will bring out a range of nonalcoholic craft beers, cocktails and other more sophisticated drinks for those who wish to enjoy a cool break,” said Good Life owners Drew Wardle and Helen Cairns. The nitro coffee concept is born out of scientific gastronomy, with innovative baristas seeking new ways to get the most out of coffee’s flavour palette. Four of the Good Life crew have received training to prepare this futuristic brew. “It’s extremely popular in the US and Europe, and this will be the first machine of its kind north of Auckland,” says Drew.

p Dargaville’s Unichem Orrs Pharmacy has settled in well to its new abode, right across the street from the old address. Now situated on the other side of the town’s famous gumdigger statue on Hokianga Road, the friendly team is ready to take care of your healthcare needs and provide some excellent holiday gift ideas. p Drew Wardle with the pressurised, chilled kegs which give nitro coffee its distinctively bold flavour

GARAGE DOORS DONE RIGHT. We install new doors to garages, sheds and barns.

“There’s no need for milk or sugar; the nitro coffee system produces a real treat for coffee lovers.” The team plans to have everything up and running in time for Labour Weekend this Saturday to fit in with their new opening hours, with late nights until 7.30 on Thursdays and Fridays enabling guests to relax and chill at the new temperance bar. ¢

WE ARE YOUR PROFESSIONALS Attracting international skills u by Andy Bryenton

Dargaville has recently welcomed two new highly skilled technicians who have come from the ultra-modern Emirate of Dubai to smalltown Kaipara. Henry Chibesa and Akhil Antony worked amid Dubai’s desert-side skyscrapers as Ford-qualified technicians. Their skills are just as applicable and valued in Dargaville, where they join Lindsay West’s team. It’s a real sea-change job opportunity for the pair, who say they love the Kauri Coast lifestyle. “This seems like a great place to raise a family,” says Henry, who originally hails from Zambia in Southern Africa. “It’s a big change from Dubai. The people here have been very welcoming as well, and they are good to work with.” Akhil learned his trade in the south of India and said while the Ford fleet in Dubai has big similarities with that seen on local roads, there’s less opulence, excess and sheer size in the vehicles Kiwis drive. He notes that the same dealership which sells Ford in Dubai also carries Maserati and Ferrari supercars, and the workshops there operate in shifts to enable round-the-clock service for the

many Ford owners of the prosperous Gulf state. Dargaville Ford’s Lindsay West said he couldn’t be happier with his two newest team members, and he’s pleased to see them enjoying life in Kaipara. “It’s a big change, but honestly, we have learned as much from them as they have from us. Our existing technicians, brothers Chris and Henry Chan-Sau, have been welcoming and supportive, so the spirit and comradeship in the workshop has never been higher,” says Lindsay. “I have always been passionate about staff training and building the skills of this team, and the opportunity to work alongside Akhil and Henry is greatly appreciated.” The shift from India and Zambia to Dubai and, hence, on to New Zealand has been made possible by how Ford orchestrates its vehicle manufacturing and maintenance operations. With the same cars and parts used across multiple markets, there may be some models we

WE ARE YOUR PROFESSIONALS Rolling out for cyclone recovery u by Andy Bryenton

At the start of November, a special relay will begin at the very bottom of New Zealand, travelling the country’s length to raise funds for Cyclone Gabrielle rebuilds in affected areas. The Ulysses Club, with a long track record of charitable giving, has planned its most ambitious fundraising journey yet to help those areas still feeling the infrastructural, social and fiscal burden of cyclone damage. Nationwide organiser Leigh-Ann Crane says the club, primarily of older motorcyclists, aims to bring in a million dollars for the cause. They will arrive in Kaipara around the morning of November 13, planning to stop in at the Matakohe Holiday Park, joined by local classic car enthusiasts and well-wishers to speed them on their way. “The idea is simple. Pass a baton from one Ulysses branch of riders to another, covering the entire length of New Zealand in two weeks,” says Leigh-Ann.” “The Baton Relay is a unique and exciting way to raise funds and awareness for the people affected by the devastating cyclone that devastated so much of the nation. Whether you ride a bike, drive a hot rod, classic car, or just out for a Sunday drive, you, too, can be part of this amazing event and show your support.” The baton will be passed between 25 regional Ulysses Clubs, including the Northland riders, who have featured in this publication before, for their donations

to charities and emergency services. All those who support the cyclone relief cause are welcome to come and meet the ride in Matakohe from 11am on Monday, November 13. The Ulysses Club, which carries the tongue-in-cheek motto of ‘grow old disgracefully’, is a group of like-minded motorcycle enthusiasts in the 40-plus

demographic, organising rides for charity and the enjoyment of the open road. It currently has more than 2,000 members and invites those who love life on two wheels to join them for comradeship and fun. ¢

WE ARE YOUR PROFESSIONALS A matter of reputation u by Andy Bryenton

healing or the law could be known across an entire kingdom. So-called cowboys in modern times often hide behind a mask of anonymity, thanks in part to the vast populations of big cities. It’s harder in small towns to botch a job and keep it quiet, so gladly, the opposite is true. Those professionals and tradespeople who thrive in the New Zealand heartland build a reputation for honesty and good work. Generally speaking, businesses which put down roots, live and work in the same small town, train up local young people and employ locals are fiercely protective of their good name. Two other signs of a good reputation include supporting local charities, sports teams or clubs, and advertising in the local newspaper. Both show a sense of wanting to be part of civic life and connections to the neighbourhood. Still, why are poor tradespeople called ‘cowboys’ at all? Surely the cattle drovers out there are insulted by the connotation? Well, it seems that the phrase originates in Britain, not the US, where cowboys are

held in some regard. The term’s original use as an insult was for a bad builder who ‘rides into town with no name, puts lots of holes in everything, then rides off into the sunset never to be seen again’. Its earliest use is from a British magazine in 1959, which bemoaned the problem of dodgy builders cashing in on the need for more space in post-war London; ‘blokes from down at the pub’ with no qualifications who did indeed put holes in everything with their hammers and drills. The term was popularised on

UK and Irish television shows like Only Fools and Horses, Father Ted, and Steptoe and Son. Perhaps the biggest ‘cowboy’ of modern times is a cybernetic one. Good advice from professional people is worth seeking out, but asking the Internet may be a mixed blessing. After all, if you query your web browser whether or not online advice is worth the pixels it’s displayed in, you’ll be told honestly you shouldn’t trust a thing that it says; a neat paradox indeed. ¢

Trans-Tasman help for kūmara industry u by Paul Campbell

As kūmara recovery planting gathers pace in Kaipara, an Australian import is filling gaps in the Kiwi marketplace after the floods earlier this year saw the local crop devastated. Sweet potato chip imports are appearing on snack shelves here as Nelson company Proper Crisps switched to its factory in Victoria, Australia, to meet demand. Supplier to Proper Crisps for nine years, Kaipara Kūmara managing director Anthony Blundell says it’s not a major blow to either party, and he’s happy to take the help from across the Tasman. “It’s the right move for Proper Crisps to sub in sweet potato until we can get back to supplying them properly next season. We’re grateful for the partnership and that they’ve made that commitment to us. “In our 50 years of harvesting, this year’s weather is by far the biggest challenge we’ve faced. Since the floods, we’ve been left with 1,500 tonnes compared to our usual 8,000 tonnes,” Kūmara in some supermarkets at the moment are fetching up to around $13 a kilogram. A seed contingency scheme funded by the Ministry of Primary Industries has ensured Kaipara growers have at least 77 per cent of the required seed for this planting season. Mr Blundell says the Australian sweet potato isn’t too dissimilar to the kūmara, so switching to Australia is the best

Proper Crisps’ Duncan Kerr said the snack food manufacturer worked for as long as possible to keep up production for its kūmara product, but with the supply forecast to run out this month, the company needed a fix. “We decided to create a new product that the Aussies will love just as much as

Hill erosion target for harbour project u by Paul Campbell

Landowners in the catchment of the Kaipara Harbour have been given access to co-funding for planting erodible hillsides in an expansion of Kaipara Moana Remediation, a $300 million, 10-year project to clean up the waterway. KMR is now partnering with landowners to reduce erosion by planting on hillsides after its initial 18 months of emphasis on fencing and planting nearer waterways. “Steep land with bare dirt or signs of active movement and erosion is being prioritised for treatment, particularly if water flowing over this land will drain directly into a waterway or the Kaipara itself,” says project leader Justine Daw.

“In the hill country, we are seeking projects involving larger than one hectare of highly erodible land. This can include land affected by the 2023 floods, storms and Cyclone Gabrielle.” The first deadline for co-funding of native planting or regeneration projects is November 13 and Justine is encouraging landowners to lodge their interest with urgency.

“The team at KMR wants to hear from landowners wanting to establish or regenerate native plants on erodible hill slopes or along waterways. We also want landowners to make expressions of interest by November 13 if they are interested in planting exotic trees on eroding hillsides, such as eucalyptus or redwoods.

“Those who want to plant poplars are also invited to express interest before March 31, 2024, to plant in winter 2024. This is part of our ongoing support for landowners across the catchment. This may require a farm system perspective, forestry best practice, or simply having easy access to funding,” says Justine. ¢
