Hundreds lined Victoria Street to watch more than 40 assorted fire and rescue appliances, support vehicles and special-task vehicles from as far away as Kaitaia, Bay of Islands and Silverdale. The machines also spanned the old and new, with the star being the beautifully presented 1939 ‘Colonial’ bodied open top Ford V8 appliance, down for the day from the Northland Firehouse Museum at Okaihau. Brigades and their crews came from Kamo, Whangarei, Marsden Point, Portland, Kaiwaka, Te Kopuru, Maungaturoto, Kaikohe, Hikurangi, Ngunguru, Ruakaka and Ahipara, plus many others. After the town parade and a quick visit to the Norfolk Court Rest Home, the parade made its way to Selwyn Park. On show was the ‘Bronto’ high-lift extension ladder machine, capable of reaching five stories, and the impressive and very hi-tech Hazmat command centre. This purpose built truck overviews a fire scene via hi-resolution cameras on extendable antenna, displayed inside on large flat screens so commanders can direct crews on the ground as needed. The crowds also watched the scary speed of a mocked up chip-pan fire and how to deal with it and then crews torched a small building and demonstrated how with breathing apparatus, they could deal with it quickly and efficiently. In both instances, the speed of the fires was daunting, reinforcing the safety message.

 Sibling rivalry is nothing new, but Jason and Graeson Kermode — in years 12 and 13 respectively at Dargaville High School — have taken it to new levels, breaking their scaphoid bones, but in different arms. Jason was using Dargaville’s new skate park and went over his bike’s handle bars while Graeson was playing netball for the college in Auckland. Jason also dislocated his shoulder in the tumble. They will be in plaster for a while yet, although Jason says his will probably come off first.

On April 5 and 6 next year she and fellow Dargaville resident Sarah Moran will be half of a team taking part in Oxfam’s Trailwalker — a 100km walk around Taupo to raise money for Oxfam projects. Ms Guthrie says she had been thinking for some time about entering the Trailwalker before deciding to take the plunge. “I was sitting on a plane to Christchurch. I was next to a group of excited people who appeared to have done something interesting. I asked them what they had done. The latest addition to Warren and Mavis Suckling’s popular Kumara Box Park on the Pouto Road has been a huge hit with children. ‘Ernie’ (aka Warren) has recently built a weta house and 230 kids from Dargaville Primary School recently gave it a major thumbs up. Ernie says the kids didn’t hesitate even knowing it was fully stocked with creepy looking weta. “We built the cave with old tyres filled with clay and rotting logs, creating a cool, dark, and moist environment which weta love and can lay eggs in. Dargaville Masons reappoint master

Drivers’ licences — good and bad

The Dargaville branch of Freemasons New Zealand has reappointed the past lodge master for a second term at a special ceremony known as an installation.

While the number of drivers licence tests in Northland has more than trebled in the past four years, the NZ Transport Agency says the pass rate is up from less than half to just under the national average of 70 per cent.

Paul Udall, previously a lodge master at Pakuranga for two terms, was installed as master for the year through to 2014. More than 40 freemasons from Wellsford to Whangarei and from as far afield as Hawkes Bay were present for the installation ceremony, which was conducted by grand lodge member Bob Vartan. Also present were the district grand master Bryan Wiig along with the divisional grand master Eddie Eeles. The Dargaville lodge, which uses the Maori word Pono (truth) for its title, is now in its 98th year and Mr Udall says while membership is encouraging at around 40, new members are always welcome. “As we head towards our 100th year, we are trying to encourage representative membership across as many different professions and walks of life as we can, so we can be fully interconnected and thus better serve our community.” Mr Udall said he was also presented with the traditional end of year Masonic jewel

A close connection to Kaipara Great Wall walker inspires Tinopai kids A newly-minted Dargaville law firm has harnessed the professional expertise of local identity, Amanda Matich.

As daughter of legendary Dargaville GP Maurice Matich she learned quickly that as a professional in your community you have obligations that extend far beyond the demands of a nine-to-five job. Educated at Dargaville High, Amanda completed her law degree at Otago University and an MBA at Auckland University. After practising law in Dunedin and Auckland, she returned home to bring up her son in the community she was brought up in. When he was 18 months old, Amanda started work as a solicitor for Hammonds Law. “When I first started practising law in Dargaville I recall driving down the beach with my father and I said to him, “I want to be to this community as a lawyer what you were as a doctor.” Amanda has big shoes to fill. Her father was a GP in Dargaville for 50 years and was doctor to thousands of Kaipara residents spanning several generations. But Amanda has made an impressive start. Mental health awareness week runs from October 7th–11th with Ministry of Health figures showing the rural suicide rate across New Zealand is 16 per 100,000 people, compared to an urban rate of 11.2 per 100,000. They are statistics that have prompted the Dargaville branch of Arataki Ministries to make available in the Kaipara district, copies of a publication specifically aimed at helping combat rural area depression. Down on the Farm: Depression and Mental Health in the Rural South was written by rural journalist Yvonne O’Hara, with a $12,000 grant from NZ Mental Health. Arataki Ministries Dargaville spokesman, Mark Bell, says while it was initially aimed at Rural Canterbury it applies everywhere.  “It outlines the causes of rural stress and depression and aims to reduce the stigma around mental health issues and to encourage the traditionally stoic ‘she’ll be right’ farmer and equally staunch farming community to talk and seek help.” Health officials say there is no simple answer why rural people experience more depression, but factors listed include family history, lifestyle, rising business pressure and just simple daily events. Mr Kidd is selling a community hall — one he knows well. The Tatarariki hall serves a farming area 4km south of Te Kopuru. His father chaired the Tatarariki Public Hall Society which raised £180 to build it in 1934. A year after it opened it was extended and a kitchen was added at a cost of £144. For decades the hall was centre of the local community. There were dances most weekends. It was the venue for indoor bowls and table tennis, while the boxing club used the hall for sparring and training. “The area had 500 or more people. There was often a bus from Te Kopuru that took people to dances and returned them home afterwards. In those days the roads were metal. Now people are more mobile. There used to be 15 or 16

dairy farms in the area. Now there are only six. Most houses are still lived in. But farm workers don’t stay long.” Mr Kidd says usage declined significantly in recent years. With no users, and no prospect of any, the society decided it could no longer afford a power bill of $60 a month. So a few months ago the electricity was cut off. Mr Kidd and his fellow trust members then decided to put the building on the market. So how much does he expect it to go for? “I’ve got no idea. It’s worth what anyone can use it for.” Mr Kidd has had “four or five” expressions of interest but no firm offers. Mr Kidd says the trust’s rules provide that any proceeds will be used for charitable purposes. 

While Andrew was unable to repeat the success of Aria Gent who won the big prize last year while representing Dargaville, Andrew was pleased with his performance. The Office of the Auditor General says it is now finalising the report on the Mangawhai community wastewater scheme, and refutes claims it is stalling the process. Retired Mangawhai lawyer Clive Boonham, claims the OAG’s final report is still ‘not on the horizon’ and says the delay could affect legal proceedings arising from it. Spokesperson for the Auditor General, Tamar McKewen, says compiling the report has been a huge task. “This is reflected in the time it has taken to complete the work. However, we are now in the final stages of the inquiry process. Our scrutiny and reporting helps hold public entities

to account, and we can refer issues to other agencies for action. Public entities are not obliged to act on the Auditor-General’s findings or recommendations, however, many certainly do.” In response to Mr Boonham’s claims that the OAG was deliberately stalling to trigger protection for Government under the Limitations Act, Ms McKewen said it had nothing to do with their process. “The Limitation Act 2010 relates to court proceedings and is not relevant to the Auditor-General’s duties. Timing around the report was based on the need for a full independent investigation, reflected in the time it has taken to finalise it.”

In fact, the gentlemen on the lot had only one omission from the suite of gadgets to note; rain sensing wipers. Throw in subtle carbon fiber accents and real leather, and you begin to appreciate why Kia epitomises value for money. The Cerato hatch comes with a choice of engines, up to the willing 2 litre model also found in the sedan. Fuel economy still sits in the mid 7s, despite the fact that the hatch boasts a voluminous load space, complete with true fold-flat seats. And to drive? The Cerato feels immediately comfortable and familiar, with all the right buttons in all the right places. It’s a smooth and intuitive drive — just the right place to spend the morning commute or pick up the kids from school. Though, that being said, it’s no slouch on the open highway either. Rumours abound of a turbocharged coupe version coming soon, which will be quite a departure, but for now, the Cerato has its sights set on the crown held for many years by that other family car beginning with ‘C’.

Concepts such as the Soul and the Optima seem to have come direct from the motor shows of Detroit and Geneva without the watering-down of design aesthetics seen in other brands, and that trend continues with the latest iteration of the Cerato family. My wife and I travelled to a meeting in KeriKeri on 23 September, 2013 organised by the Northland Regional Council to provide the public an opportunity to hear and pose questions to an independent panel of experts on a broad range of important issues relating to local government reform. The panel was chaired by Sir Geoffrey Palmer (QC and former Prime Minister) and the other panelists were Dr Ganesh Nana (Chief Economist at BERL), Professor Natalie Jackson (Professor of Demography and Director of the Population Studies Centre at the University of Waikato) and Mr Tipene Marr (Councillor from Bay of Plenty Regional Council). Approx 180 people attended from all areas of Northland, you were encouraged to have your say and a lot of people did. Professor Natalie Jackson spent some time going through slides detailing the issues facing rural Northland being, an ageing population and the loss of rural services. Dr Ganesh Nana highlighted that Central Government does not pursue any nationwide rural policies to maintain and promote rural communities, even though the exports are driven by the rural sector. From most of the people who stood and spoke from the floor, 4 issues seemed to be repeating themselves;

• The concern of one unitary authority creating a power base and decision making in Whangarei • Youth unemployment — A lack of jobs forcing our youth to the cities • Loss of services • What can be done to stop our towns declining? The question has to be asked, what has happened when communities could at one stage afford to build roads, footpaths, sewerage systems, storm water etc but now struggles to maintain them. Dr Ganesh Nana pointed out that Central Government is putting more and more costs onto local government without the resources to cope with it, for Northland to be more effective in lobbying central government, Northland should have one voice, but he also stressed that one unitary authority might not be beneficial to all, given the geography and spread of Northland, that even with the status quo Northland would be more effective with a united voice. We need to explore ways of having a unified voice without losing our own and the realisation that we have to support our own communities. Therefore, it is even more imperative that Northlanders be a part of shaping and making good policies for rural Northland.

Work to begin on bad intersection

Gala to raise funds

Road trips to and from the Kaipara to points south will involve a little more planning and possibly some delays for the next few months.

A gala day at Maungaturoto School promises loads of fun and and a raft of prizes to boost funds for student welfare.

The NZ Transport Agency says a $2.4m contract to improve the notorious intersection of State Highway one / Wayby Valley Road / Wayby Station Road south of Wellsford has been awarded to Transfield Services (NZ) Limited and work gets underway later this month. The agency’s acting highways manager, Steve Mutton said the priority was, as always, to ensure the safety of road users. “It’s a busy rural, open-road intersection with a poor safety record. In the five years to 2008, there have been 20 crashes there, six people were seriously injured, and 22 received minor injuries. We want to ensure it can manage growing numbers of vehicles driving north and south as well as turning to head across country and to the coast.” He says the work to upgrade the intersection will include, designated

The school is holding its pet day and gala on Saturday October 19 and is looking forward to big support from the community. Organiser Nyree Alcock says the school has held a pet day for many years in which children bring in their lambs and calves for judging. But this year the pet day will be moved from a school day to coincide with the gala. Mrs Alcock says the pet day will start at 10am and will conclude with a grand parade starting about noon. Once that is over, the gala will start. “There’ll be lots of food stalls, candy floss and a hangi. There’ll be face painting, a colouring competition, balloon popping and a coconut shy.” She says everyone who comes to the gala will automatically go into a draw for an HP Tablet. One highlight of the day is sure to be a mystery
