‘Swimming in nostalgia’ u by Ayla Miller

A century and more of local government memories were the centrepiece of a gathering of past councillors and staff of the Hobson County and Dargaville Borough Councils in Dargaville last weekend.

“We are just swimming in nostalgia,” said David Stevenson who was town clerk for one year in 1962. The event saw 109 people travel from around the country to reminisce about times gone by over lunch and speeches at the Lighthouse Function Centre in Harding Park. “Six of us got together a year ago to organise it and thought it would be a nice thing to do as we are all getting older,” said long serving office administrator Charlane White. The Hobson County Council was formed in 1876, Dargaville Borough Council in 1908 and Otamatea County in 1887. In 1977 Hobson County and Dargaville Borough began to share services. Past Hobson County Council member and deputy chairman Bill Simpkin and his wife Veronica were pleased to have the chance to catch up with old friends as it had been 44 years since Bill left the council in 1971 just before the amalgamation. Also in attendance was Murray Gimblett who had travelled with his wife from Wellington. He worked as a registered engineer and as chief executive when the councils were sharing joint services. The Hobson County encompassed the area outside Dargaville down to Pouto and up to Waipoua Forest and is now part of the Kaipara District Council. “There are quite a few past staff still living in the area and there were

p Past Dargaville Borough Councillor Don Elliott, Dargaville Borough office admin Margaret Tier, and Hobson County and Dargaville Borough joint staff Trevor Donald, Charlane White, Alison Black and Sue Wood

some we hadn’t seen for many years,” Charlane said. “One man came up to me to give me a hug saying ‘I haven’t seen you in 43 years. There were lots of people recognising one another and that made it well worth the effort.” Attendees got the chance to pore over old photos and catch up

with past colleagues and she said people were even asking when the next reunion was. The councils were amalgamated along with Otamatea in 1989 and Charlane stayed on to work for the newly formed Kaipara District Council, retiring after 45 years of service at the beginning of this year.

Rebekah, Jacob, Hannah and Emily participated in the scavenger hunt which was created by museum volunteers. Through clues such as ‘look for a man in blue who looks out for you,’ — which was the policeman in the cabinet — the family worked their way around the exhibits. “It was a really good experience and it made the children really look at things and hunt for things,” said their mother Rachel.

ASB’s Dargaville branch welcomed a new manager in March this year. Trevor Waters relocated from the Paihia branch and has been in the banking industry for a total of 20 years.

The recent Auckland Foodshow created an interest for Dargaville resident Katie Le Noel of Wild West Worcester and she set to getting her products out for people to see at the annual event.

Tangiteroria School bike trail

Just bowling along

u by Ann Morgan

u by Ann Morgan

The Tangiteroria school bike trail is marking its sixth year on Sunday October 25. There are three track options available to cater for all levels of riders with more than 500 riders taking part in the event last year.

The Dargaville branch of the 60’s Up Movement recently won the Northland 60’s Up indoor bowls competition bringing the trophy back to Dargaville.

“This is the school’s major fundraiser for the year,” said co-organiser Helen Dackers. “It originally started when parents of the community thought we were capable of hosting one and it became a very successful event. Participants travel from as far away as Hamilton to attend and it has become really popular amongst trail bike riders. “We have been raising money to renovate the school’s field which is well on the way to being complete and the children are eager to use it this summer.” The main track is approximately 35 kilometres long and takes in some breathtaking scenery from the highest point. There is a separate track for the juniors and a small flat track for the midgets. “If you are a rider, load up your bike and come on out to Pukehuia Road, Tangiteroria and ride the scenic countryside that traverses local farms and the Tangihua ranges.” Entry is required before participants ride and they must sign out once they have finished for the day. Sign in is from 8.00am and the course is open from 9.00am and closes at 2.30pm.

p Competitor makes a splash at the Tangiteroria School bike trail

The cost is $30 for adults and $15 for children 15-years-old and under and the midgets are free. Eftpos is available as is food and drinks. “We are ever grateful to the landowners, members of the community and our sponsors that give their land, time and help to support the children of our school. “Indoor bowls is one of the activities the club are involved in,” said club president Margaret Pinny. “It is a social event which creates the opportunity for us older folk to meet up, make new friends and go on outings.” The late Wallace and Agnes Bennett started the group some 20 years ago after working in rest homes and they realised there wasn’t a lot in Dargaville for the older generation. They established the group and then handed on the reins. Margaret moved to the area in 1996 with her husband Rex. Unfortunately he became very ill and passed away that June, leaving Margaret alone. A friend suggested in the October that she go along to the 60’s Up group for company. “My first outing was a bus trip and the president at the time pulled me aside and said she would like to step down and would I be interested in being president,” said Margaret who was 58 at the time. “I decided I had a lot of free time on my hands and it sounded like something I could handle, and 20 years later I am still here.” Margaret says she has enjoyed being involved in creating events for others to get pleasure out of. The group compete

p President of the Dargaville 60S Up Movement Margaret Pinny with the indoor bowls trophy which their team - Judy and Pat Dysart, Gwen Mann and Marianne Harvey recently won

in indoor bowls and petanque and have a variety of outings each month as well as guest speaker events. Anyone around the 60-year-old age group or older is welcome to attend. “The club is a good place to interact with others and it gives people a purpose in life instead of being stuck at home and lonely,” said Margaret. ¢

p Aerobic gymnasts Grace Christey, Willow Clarke and Jaimee Mason of Dargaville have won gold at their first NZ Gymsports Nationals

Nine-year old Grace Christey was awarded a gold medal in the step four individuals 9-11 year-old category. Grace and fellow team member 11-year-old Willow Clarke combined to take home gold in the step four category, and 13-year-old Jaimee Mason finished first in the step four individuals 12 — 14 year-old category. “Aerobic gymnastics is a high intensity form of gymnastics. It’s really about showing strength and flexibility to fast paced music and demonstrating fitness levels,” says coach Ashleigh McCaw of Active Attitude. “They have done very well. I’m extremely impressed by them in their first year of doing aerobics and their first year of nationals. They are really excited and looking forward to next year.” She credits their success to their hard work and their supporters. “I think they have had a really focussed team to work with and a great support team of parents and athletes.” The athletes have a personalised training programme from Active Attitude to help them work on strength and conditioning. They train twice a week with their team in Whangarei and are now working towards the step six category which is a higher level of choreographed gymnastics and have their sights set on the Nationals next year.

Jaimee’s mum Debbie Mason says the girls work really well together. “The younger girls look up to Jaimee and they are all really good friends. “The three of them practise all the time, they just don’t stop. Jaimee comes home and she is always trying out her strength training.”

The girls travelled to Auckland along with seven other team mates from Whangarei. Eight of the ten girls in the Northland aerobics team made it through to the top eight finals for their age division and nine girls were awarded proficiency pins. ¢

At birth he was not breathing and was immediately taken away to neo-natal care at Auckland Hospital. Within just 12 hours of his arrival, he had undergone the first of many life-saving operations. Now nine years-old, Joseph uses a wheelchair for mobility and has undergone more than 32 general anaesthetics and hundreds of procedures in his short years. Living in Dargaville and having to frequently travel to Auckland’s Starship Children’s Hospital and Whangarei Base Hospital, Erica knows how important it is to have efficient and prompt treatment. Knowing she can call on the helicopters if needed is important to her. “With Joseph, he literally has a whole lot of issues that have no connection and therefore no title or diagnoses can be attached to him. As you can imagine, it can be very frustrating to not have some identification marker but he does have the very best specialists in the country looking after him.,” says Erica. “However all of those specialists are at Starship, and because he has a very complicated and serious medical history, we like to know the Northland Rescue Choppers are there when and if we need it so he can be treated with all the people that implicitly understand his needs as quickly as possible,” Erica says. “Given his status, there is a high likelihood that we will need to call on the helicopter at some stage. Who knows, I might need it one day myself. The helicopter crew do such a great job and all of Northland is fortunate to have such a great service we can call on.” “My mum, Joseph’s grandmother, had to call on the helicopters a few years ago when she had a brain aneurysm. Mum turns 80 next year and we thank NEST for making that a possibility,” she says. #Joseph and Erica recently spearheaded a fundraiser involving carrying Joseph and four of his friends around the Selwyn Primary School cross country course. They raised over $1900 and plan to do it all again in 2016. Ways to donate: • At any Northland ASB • www.nest.org.nz/donate • Givealittle.co.nz Online Banking: ERH Appeal - 12 3106 0046000 00

Lynne has previously had her own practice in Kaiwaka and one in Ruawai until she left to focus on vocational rehab. She says she is looking forward to working amongst the community again as her three children went to school there and she has had a long association with the Otamatea Hawks. “I like the atmosphere in Maungaturoto and the people. It is a close knit community,” she says. “I find it really rewarding to be able to work through people’s medical problems and to see what we can do to fix them. It is great seeing people who have come in crippled with pain, walking out with a smile on their face. “We are really hands on and we do a lot of manual therapy which I believe is the most effective. It’s partly science and partly having someone who cares enough. It is a special trusting relationship because a patient is trusting you with a part of their body that is in pain.” Lynne comes from a farming background which she believes will help her work amongst the rural community, and currently lives on a lifestyle block in Matakohe.

A garden legacy u by Ann Morgan

The Kaiwaka community garden was established through a Northtec course with local man James Andrews as the tutor. This included building and designing the beds and James ran it for two years until he handed it back to the community to run. “It is part of the hall committee and on their land. They had advertised for others to manage it so eventually I did as there was a lot of interest of starting a new garden,” said Helen Marsh who took the initiative to re-establish the garden as it had declined. “It is easier for people to access than the old one on Evans Rd. We started this winter with broad beans and lupins to help fix the soil. p The Small Pukekos Early Learning Centre children The Small Pukekos Early attending their patch of the community garden Learning Centre have a small patch to themselves where they have how plants grow and where some planted strawberries, and they have also of our healthy foods come from.” planted peas and beans. Counting down to better healthcare

p Dargaville Countdown staff and community members combined their efforts last Saturday to raise money for the Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal with a mini gala day held in the supermarket’s car park. Meat manager and gala volunteer Karla Tuutafaiva (pictured holding her one-year-old son Tulangi) has three other children Stuart, 15, Sateki, 12, and Peni, 4 and was motivated to help out because of this. “I support the cause because my children might need the services one day,” she said. The store has raised $4137 and the appeal finishes this Sunday.

This attractive yet improvable farm is within easy commuting distance of Dargaville or Whangarei and produced 44,000 kg milk solids last season. Half of the property comprises of flat, naturally-fertile marine clay soils complemented by a useful balance of easy-contoured hill. You can keep an eye on what´s happening on the farm from your modern four bedroom home. The property is tucked away in a private spot, yet is convenient for agricultural contractors and also handy to work, schooling, and lifestyle opportunities. The farm is well set up for easy management by one person - the vendor comments that the cowshed flows well, the calving pad is handy and the scattering of native trees provide good shelter for the stock. There is a twelve-aside cowshed, effluent is irrigated, soil fertility is good, and pastures are mostly ryegrass-clover. Just walk in and start producing - the vendors have made the tough decision to move on - ring now to arrange a viewing.

100 IT’S NOT A TARGET

Everything you need all in one place

Labour Weekend is often seen as the official start of Summer — though on the calendar, the season doesn’t officially kick off until December. Late Spring has its own charms for those who wish to get out into the outdoors, however, and it’s a good time to throw off the tarp and check out the condition of RVs, boats and caravans. After a long cold winter, there’s always some remedial work to be done to get things up to standard. Sometimes, this just means a good Spring clean.

But there’s a separate ‘E-WOF’ involved for the electrical components which make your boat or camper a home away from home, and it’s also a good idea to fit gas detectors to mobile accommodation kitted out with gas powered fridges and cookers. In the case of a leak, you’ll be warned before disaster strikes. It’s also a fair bet that our law enforcement representatives will be out in force at the nation’s boat ramps this Labour Day, looking for those who have neglected to warrant their boat trailer. Each year a swag of forgetful boaties swell the crown’s coffers — don’t be one of them this season! No matter where the road takes you this summer, make sure that you’re packed for every eventuality. Long trips — and ones which take place over several days — demand a good quality spare tyre (and one for the trailer), a sturdy set of jumper leads, a first aid kit, and a working jack as standard kit. With the help of your local mechanics, electricians, gasfitters, and marine outfitters, it should be a breeze to get those ‘big boys toys’ out of mothballs and into the sunshine. ¢

Celebrating workers’ rights

MAUNGATUROTO

Coinciding with longer daylight hours and balmy weather, Labour Day is an eagerly anticipated occasion, and with these distractions it is easy to forget the origins of the holiday which date back to October 28, 1890. It was on this day that New Zealand first commemorated the struggle for the eight hour working day, instigated by trade union members and won by carpenter Samuel Parnell in 1840. Union members and supporters lined the streets of their towns and cities to celebrate Mr Parnell’s success. This day also marked the first anniversary of the establishment of the Maritime Council and earned New Zealand a reputation as ‘a working man’s paradise’. Mr Parnell immigrated to New Zealand from England, arriving in Wellington in February 1840. He is said to have been a firm believer that the 24 hours in a day should be divided into eight hours for working, eight for sleeping ‘and the remaining eight for recreation in which men to do what little things they want for themselves’. After the first Labour Day demonstration it was only natural that workers’ rights activists should encourage the government to make Labour Day an annual public holiday to support a better work life balance for all New Zealanders. The first Labour Days were celebrated with street parades where union members

New tech for the big catch u by Andy Bryenton

Just landed in New Zealand is the all new Okuma Azores 90, a specialist heavy duty saltwater spin reel that delivers new levels of strength and stability. Dargaville’s Hunting and Fishing store owner (and keen angler) Jason set out to test this new reel on the awesome West Coast. Firstly some spec’s. The Azores 90 features 6+1 high performance stainless steel ball bearings, specially pre-treated to be ten times more resilient to saltwater than ‘standard’. The pinion gear and the drag are other stand-outs. The pinion gear is not only machine cut, but is supported with an extra bearing for improved meshing and transfer of power when under heavy pressure. The DFD (Dual Force Drag) will stop the hardest fighting fish with drag pressure that runs right up to 20kg. In the reel body Okuma have used an aluminium material with strong anti-corrosion features, which they say makes the Azores body 50% stronger than the material in general use. It’s also strengthened by carbon plates, and I found the test reel rigid and tough, yet light enough to cast and retrieve lures over a prolonged period of time.

Furthermore for smoothness, the Azores have a mechanical stabilizing system which helps to eliminate vibration as well as increase stability. The mono capacity is generous at 450 of 20lb. Braid users will also be impressed. The anodised aluminium spool is knurled providing a locking point for braid, eliminating slipping, therefore backing is not required enabling more braid to be spooled on for maximum capacity.

There have been big changes to the Ford lineup in the past few years as the global auto maker has really gotten into the swing of their world car programme. The accolades for cars like the new Focus, the new Mondeo and the supremely popular Ranger ute have been one thing — but now Ford want to give locals the chance to really get to know their lineup. can, beside representatives from both the local Rugby and Football clubs, who have kindly donated the venue for this automotive festival. Of course, there’s going to be plenty of on-road action as well. The charitable side of taking a test drive is a fine motivator, but the chance to get behind the wheel of a Focus RS, V8 Falcon or Everest is compelling in itself. Lindsay insists that there’s never been a better time to check out the entire Ford range, all in one place — and of course, there’s also the chance to take one home as a prize! The Blue Oval Roadshow has already travelled from the chilly south through Christchurch, on to Nelson, and up through the North Island as it approaches Dargaville. Other towns have turned out in force to play, win, drive and support their local dealership’s chosen club or charity. In November it’s our turn, and Lindsay’s team would like to offer both an open invitation and a challenge to our locals. Let’s show the rest of the

Just ask any major band — the best way to make new fans is to go on tour. That’s just what Ford have done, putting together a rolling roadshow, packed into massive transporter trucks and visiting towns all over New Zealand. Travelling from south to north, they’ve given people the chance to test drive and experience the full spectrum of Ford’s fleet, while also doing their bit for the community. A big part of the Blue Oval Roadshow is the fact that it’s a fun day, with a sausage sizzle, games, prizes — even the chance to win a brand new car. But the real score that’s being kept is just how many test drivers have hit the road in one of the display fleet, as each test drive taken means Ford will donate another $50 to the Northern Wairoa Football Club. Dargaville Ford owner Lindsay West is excited about welcoming the roadshow to his town, and his staff are hard at work putting together a real day to remember. On both days of the event most of the Dargaville Ford staff will be out in force, helping in every way the
