A powerful message

Connecting town and river again

p Last Friday was Pink Shirt Day, a day when school students around the nation gather together to reject bullying, both in the real world and online. Students at Dargaville’s St Joseph’s school were proud to put on the pink colour scheme to spread the message. A changed political landscape

Shellfish ban and fishing changes The Ministry of Primary Industries has issued a public health warning against collecting shellfish on the Northland west coast from Waipapakauri on 90 Mile Beach, south to Pouto Point on the northern head of the Kaipara Harbour.

p Former minister Shane Jones looks to “private enterprise.”

p Mark Cameron is headed for parliament

“I’m absolutely elated by our win. Northland has spoken and given us their party vote with strong numbers. I am thankful and very pleased with the whole campaign and look forward to being a strong advocate for the rural sector as I also learn the parliamentary ropes.” Incumbent National MP for Northland, Matt King, says he is “a little bit on tenterhooks until special votes are counted.” Mr King finished ahead of Labour candidate Willow-Jean Prime, but with a lead of only 742 votes.

p Northland MP Matt King awaits special votes

“I certainly haven’t declared, and I’m not going to until special votes are counted,” he said. “Willow-Jean has gone from an average of nine thousand votes up to over 11,000, but there are some 56,000 special votes to be counted by at 2pm on November 6. “Meantime I am going to Wellington where no doubt there will be some tears and fond farewells. We will also discuss in caucus the way forward — but I will be in limbo until those votes are announced on November 6, at 2pm. ¢

“Do not collect or eat shellfish from these areas,” said an MPI spokesperson. “If anyone becomes ill after eating shellfish from an area where a public health warning has been issued, phone Healthline for advice on 0800 61 11 16, or seek medical attention immediately. Advise your nearest public health unit and keep any leftover shellfish for testing. This ban includes mussels, oysters, tuatua, pipi, toheroa, cockles, scallops, cat’s eyes, kina and all other bivalve shellfish. Cooking shellfish does not remove the toxin. “Paua, crab and crayfish may still be eaten if the gut has been completely removed prior to cooking as toxins accumulate in the gut. If the gut is not removed, its contents could contaminate the meat during the cooking process. “Symptoms typically appear between 10 minutes and three hours after ingestion. It may include numbness and tingling or prickly

feeling around the mouth, face and extremities such as hands and feet. “People may have difficulty swallowing or breathing, dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, paralysis and respiratory failure and in severe cases, death. Paralytic shellfish toxins have been detected in shellfish at levels more than the safe limit of 0.8mg/kg set by MPI. “Ongoing testing will continue and any changes will be communicated accordingly. “For more information, visit bit. ly/2I3wsPS. “MPI has also put in place new fishing measures to support the Threat Management Plan for Hector’s and Maui dolphins on October 1. “The new measures will prohibit the use of recreational and commercial set nets in a variety of areas across the country.” To learn more, head to fisheries. govt.nz/dmsdocument/40883MPI-Dolphin.

Prenatal programme returns

Quilting colours on display

u by Andy Bryenton

A kaleidoscope of colour will brighten up the walls of The Kauri Museum this week with the Otamatea Quilters’ Group annual show opening with some changes to previous years because of Covid-19.

Dargaville’s Te Ha Oranga health service provider has rebooted its very popular pregnancy and birth education classes, offering advice, wit, wisdom and practical assistance to expecting families.

p The painstaking work of quilters on display at The Kauri Museum Volunteers Hall

p With plenty of experience in pregnancy and birth, the team behind Te Ha Oranga’s Hapu Mama classes is pleased to welcome expecting mums and dads for another free course

Maria Boon, who has organised several years of the popular Hapu Mama programme, says that by gathering to talk and share information about pregnancy and birth, anxieties can be relieved. “We’ve had great success in the past, and broken down barriers and misconceptions. The birth of a child is a life-changing event for all involved, and with support and nurturing; it’s a change which helps everyone grow.” Te Ha Oranga include the traditions and teachings of kaupapa Maori birthing practices in their engaging two-

day programme, which this year runs on Tuesday, November 10 and Wednesday, November 11 from 9.30am to 2.30pm. A healthy lunch is included on both days, and there’s even a gift bag for all those who complete the two-day learning experience. As in previous years, this course is free of charge, though bookings are essential. Get in touch with Maria or one of the Te Ha Oranga team by calling 027 216 1952 or 0800 MY TE HA and join the many families who have benefitted greatly from this collaborative community initiative. ¢

“The display is on from October 23 to November 22. Included in the exhibition are a range of quilts, ranging from entirely handworked to machinestitched,“ said the museum’s marketing coordinator, Luciana Orr. The quilts are embroidered and embellished, and from contemporary to traditional designs, all worked following a common theme — Elements of Design — Repetition. “This year, the challenge given to members presented each quilter with the opportunity to explore the creative side of their art and has created some stunning quilts. The repeating element could include shape, colour, pattern, texture and line, which saw members rise to the occasion to push their

boundaries creatively.” Community quilts are at the heart of the exhibition, and the group has chosen to donate quilts to the Plunket Society with stroller and cot quilts planned around the needs of young families. “While the exhibition will proceed despite Covid-19, there are several changes to the traditional programme,” Luciana said. “Quilters will be in attendance on Friday, October 23 and only over Labour Weekend, and there will be no sales tables or raffles. Admission vouchers, giving access to this exhibition only are valid for the duration of the show and can be picked up from local sewing centres.” Admission tickets to The Kauri Museum also include the exhibition. ¢

Cross country victory

Town hall requires long–term fix

Leanne Douglas and her daughter, Zoe have plenty to celebrate as the spring cross-country running season draws to a close.

Work undertaken recently to eliminate toxic mould at Dargaville’s Town Hall has left the building with several ‘no go’ areas, sealed with biohazard-like plastic sheeting while work crews exterminate the biological pest.

The young athlete has brought home a swag of first place wins from primary school level all the way up to open competition. p Dargaville’s town hall: additions made in the late 1990s have failed to remain weathertight, and remedial options are on the table

However, further work may be necessary, according to sources within the Kaipara District Council. The additions to the town hall in Hokianga Road were opened in 1998 under the Brown mayoralty. Water ingress has caused problems which, it’s said, require a long-term fix. “There are weather tightness defects in the 1990s addition, needing to be addressed as the building will otherwise continue to deteriorate,” says council spokesperson Ben

Hope. “The mould cleaning work underway is to allow some parts of the building to be continued to be used in the meantime.” “Long-term, one option is to remediate the existing structure, and another is to demolish and rebuild. Council doesn’t currently have the budget for either option but is currently looking at other ways the project could be progressed. These may be included in the Long Term Plan 2021– 2031 process.” ¢

Connecting town and river again

A century of helping hands

u by Andy Bryenton

u by Andy Bryenton

Dargaville’s new pontoon was blessed and dedicated last Friday by a delegation of dignitaries and citizens, celebrating a fast and efficient build for this important infrastructure project.

The Rotary Club is a fixture of Kiwi life, with like-minded Rotarians gathering in most of our major towns and villages. This year they are gearing up to celebrate 100 years of community service, and they’re doing it not by giving themselves a gift, but by helping others.

p Rotary Club members sizzle up a treat; their organisation is 100 years old in New Zealand, with a legacy of good works to be very proud of

p Important figures in local government, Te Roroa, Te Uri O Hau, engineers, maritime construction workers and interested citizens all attended the blessing of Dargaville’s new pontoon

“This is a very special day for the Kaipara District Council, for Dargaville township and for all the work that has been happening through the Kaipara Kickstart programme,” said Kaipara Mayor Dr Jason Smith. “Specifically, the work they have done to reconnect us with the river. This is an important piece of infrastructure, which will reconnect the people with the Northern Wairoa River.” Mayor Smith noted the synchronicity of the project being completed the day before the general election, having been two years in the planning. To mark Rotary’s centenary in New Zealand and Australia, the ‘give every child a future’ (GECAF) plan has been launched. This scheme is set to immunise 100,000 children in nine Pacific Island countries during the next three years, against cervical cancer, rotavirus and pneumococcal disease. Maungaturoto Rotary president Rod Tysoe says that the link between Rotary and education is also a strong one. “For the local Otamatea High School, we provide support for The Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards and programmes such as the William Pike Challenge, and Rotary Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA).

irony aside, he also extolled the forward planning of the Kaipara Kickstart programme, empowered by the government’s Provincial Growth Fund. “We are building and supporting a network of wharves around the harbour to connect our people,” Mayor Smith said. A crowd of approximately fifty guests and citizens, including dignitaries from Te Roroa and Te Uri O Hau, the KDC, construction team members and the harbour authority, came together to witness the karakia of blessing, which dedicated this new riverside asset, opening it to the public. ¢

Aquaculture welcomes clean-up

u by Paul Campbell

The future health of the Kaipara Harbour has been boosted by the signing of a $200 million six-year clean-up plan and results can’t come soon enough for aquaculture farmers and commercial fishermen who earn their livelihood from the water. The programme is a catchment-wide remediation initiative to restore the 602,000-hectare catchment. Integrated Kaipara Harbour Management Group programme manager, Willie Wright, says the aim for the next 10 years is to halve the 700,000 tonnes of sediment flowing into the harbour each year — a rate of 2,000 tonnes a day.

“That is most certainly a fact,” said M&T Farms spokesman, Thane Colqhoun, who operates an oyster farming enterprise in the waterway. He showed the Lifestyler the effect of just one month of immersion of an oyster basket in the Arapaoa River estuary. A tray of fattening oysters was thickly covered in silt and sediment. Weighing

Mayor’s Memo Kia ora Spring is fully here, the kowhai has bloomed, daffodils are done. The colour yellow that’s been seen recently across the Kaipara now fades and is replaced by the colour orange — orange road cones with fluorescent strips, orange hivis jackets of shovel-ready workers, orange flashing lights of tractors towing implements between farms or excavators and trucks fixing roads. It seems that in high-growth Kaipara right now there’s a sea of orange-coloured activities going on. A new season is on us — the season of works. Between now and Christmas is one of the busiest periods for maintenance of our 1200km unsealed road network in Kaipara. Call it the “Goldilocks zone” for roadworks action, when the road surface is not too wet and not too dry but is just right. Starting now our early summer ‘orange’ works period will be particularly busy on Kaipara roads as many of the projects which were postponed during the lockdown (which was in the autumn “Goldilocks zone”) are up first, in addition to the scheduled-for-now spring/summer projects. Please be patient on the roads as you go. Also on the subject of roads, the first of Kaipara’s Speed Limit Reviews is starting soon with consultation between now and Christmas. The first area under review is for Oruawharo, Oneriri, Kaiwaka and Mangawhai — the eastern, fast-growing part of Kaipara District. The subject of Kaipara roads always attracts lots of comment, and here will be an opportunity for local knowledge to be constructively added to the process of making our roads safer. Reduced speed limits on rural roads may be under consideration here, other changes are in the wind that may affect journeys. Speed Limit Reviews for other parts of the district will take place in 2021.

The direction of travel of the new 2021/31 Kaipara District Long Term Plan has been taking shape. It’s a season for sharpening pencils over budgets, assessing projects and working out what infrastructure needs to be addressed sooner rather than later. We’ll soon be at events in the community listening and talking to you, sharing ideas with informal processes before we incorporate those ideas into the Draft Long Term Plan which will go for consultation in February/March 2021. With a weather eye on Central Government’s stated intention to remove from Councils across New Zealand their core water infrastructure, (that’s all the pipes and systems for drinking water, waste water and stormwater, called “The 3 Waters”), we are working with what we know towards the Long Term Plan. At present for Councils it’s a bit like flying a plane while it’s being dismantled. Rest assured we’re doing our best for Kaipara District and will keep the community fully informed of what’s proposed by Central Government for these community– owned assets, whatever colour or colours make our next Government. I can’t see an orange one, though. Nga mihi

some two kilograms when immersed, the tray weighed about six kilos when retrieved and required a lengthy cleaning regime. “There are some who have expressed doubt that tonnes of sediment are choking the harbour every day,” he said. “Well, this sample of what is happening to the waterway should make them wake up to the facts and realise how serious the problem is!” The Kaipara Moana Remediation Programme MoU was signed between Caring for Northland since 1988

More than $180,000 has been awarded to bolster the activities of 19 community organisations in the latest Kaipara District Council funding rounds for Reserve Contributions Contestable Fund, Rural Travel Fund and the Creative Communities Scheme.

The disruptions caused by Covid in 2020 saw Anzac Day dawn services cancelled around the country, to the dismay of patriotic and respectful Kiwi families. Similarly, a second wave of the virus broke up plans for a major national commemoration of the end of the second world war in late August, and a remembrance day for our Vietnam veterans on August 18. Thus, a decision has been made, which has been echoed by many other RSA and Australian RSL clubs, to host a public gathering of honour on the day which is traditionally marked by respectful occasions in other allied nations. The original Armistice Day was celebrated at the end of the first world war, and thus comes after the first Anzac Day, commemorated a year after the fateful Gallipoli landings, where so many soldiers lost their lives. By comparison, Armistice Day marks the truce, which stopped the war. Set for the 11th minute of the 11th hour of the 11th month to ensure that all troops in all theatres of battle could agree to the easy-to-remember time

signature, despite language barriers. This year, Dargaville’s RSA will host a wreath-laying ceremony as an addition to Anzac Day, acknowledging that the catharsis and togetherness of the dawn service have left a gap in local lives this year. Dignitaries will speak, and the public is invited to attend at 11am on Wednesday, November 11 for a brief service of respect. ¢

u by Paul Campbell

Historic Kaipara harbour cruises will get underway again at Labour weekend and then herald the first commercial landing at the new Dargaville pontoon, which is due on November 8 by the charter vessel, Kewpie Too. “We will be back for our cruising schedule out of Pahi at Labour weekend, from Saturday, October 24,” says Kaipara Cruises operator and skipper, Terry Somers. “Then our next trip will be a two-day voyage where we offload passengers at Pahi and bus them off on sightseeing to Dargaville where they will spend the night. “The boat will then make the journey up the Northern Wairoa River and pick up those passengers from the new pontoon for the journey back south. We are looking forward to that event” The cruise schedule at Labour weekend will visit historic Kaipara locations including old kauri mill and Maori pa sites as well as working mussel and oyster farms. “We will also pass the 1860 Gittos Mission Station and other remote, historic settlements as well as many bays and inlets that are only accessible by boat,” said Captain Somers. “You can

A new book detailing the human stories and historical anecdotes of Glinks Gully was to have been launched this Easter by a local author; but like many events slated for mid-2020, Covid lockdown conditions cancelled the release. Now author, Christine Rope, from a long-established Glinks Gully family, has rescheduled and reimagined the launch of her true-history compendium, marking the event down for Labour Weekend. Comprising more than 80 unique stories from history and gleaned from the memories, archives and albums of locals, the book True Tales of Glinks Gully is also packed with photographs of times past. “I have been ably assisted by so many of our local people in bringing this book to fruition,” says the author. “Pamela Barton deserves thanks for her computer skills, Brian Dean and Scott Pickering for their photography and drone piloting, and of course the many bach owners, residents and well-wishers of Glinks Gully who have contributed from their own family histories.” With ‘true history’ books trending in popularity worldwide, people are becoming more and more interested

in the ‘slice of life’ reality of days gone by in our small towns and settlements. Successful similar books about Coromandel, Great Barrier Island and even neighbouring Te Kopuru are a testament to the fandom behind this kind of literature. History is full of interesting characters and stories of everyday life, which shine a light on our ancestry. So, as Christine says, there is no limit to the number of stories that can come from a particular place. The launch for True Tales of Glinks Gully will take place on Labour Weekend Sunday at the Glinks Gully Reserve, on the beachfront. The author will be there along with a community get together from 1.30 pm. Copies of the new book will be for sale as people gather to share their memories of this small town with a big history. ¢

Twilight markets by the riverside

u by Andy Bryenton

An exciting new market concept takes off in Dargaville this Friday from 5pm, as the Northern Wairoa Boating Club opens its doors to host a range of stalls, produce and crafts. With the worldwide trend for artisanal markets and ‘street food’ only growing more popular, the decision to take the plunge and open a twilight market at the river’s edge was made by the executive of the boating club earlier this spring. Stallholders have expressed their enthusiasm for both the venue, with its picturesque views of the river at sunset, and the practicality of catching endof-week revellers, families and those seeking a produce bargain to replenish the pantry for the weekend. There’s a historical link too, as the very spot where the Labour Weekend’s inaugural market takes place is the site where ships from around the world once came to unload their goods for the early settlers of Dargaville. Stalls confirmed already include pottery, fresh fruit, free-range eggs, creative crafts and many more. Even more are yet to be announced, but enthusiasm is running high. Not only will there be a sizzling barbecue serving up ribs, there will also be full access to the Northern Wairoa Boating Club’s kitchen and bar for cold drinks and hot dinners. Entertainment will come via live music and song, with the talented performers of Circus Kumarani, fresh from their engagement at the Whangarei Fringe Festival, adding colour and a touch of circus magic.

Market organiser and boating club spokesperson, Roxanne Kelly, says that this family-friendly event will be a great way to start your long weekend. Other members of the boating club agree wholeheartedly. “We want to create an event that’s for everyone, and which helps boost both the local economy and people’s good feelings. Dargaville has a lot to offer, and we’re very enthusiastic to host this twilight market to bring people together.” This inaugural market day will take place on Friday, October 23, from 5pm to 8pm, launching into the long weekend. Technically designated as a road, there are few more stunning beaches in the world which remain legally drivable. The intent is to allow anglers and beachcombers to access all points of this vast expanse of sand, but with added numbers comes the need for caution. The last thing locals want is for auto wrecks to join the many shipwrecks under the shifting sands, which are not

advised for conventional passenger cars and front-wheel drive ‘crossovers’ Those who want to drive on the beach, which spans a vast distance between Pouto Lighthouse, Glinks Gully, Baylys Beach and Mangonui Bluff, are reminded to keep their speed down, as patches of soft sand can flip a vehicle travelling too fast. Speed is a factor, too, at areas where people access the beach, and the

limit is posted on signs. Common sense and courtesy dictate slowing to walking speed and steering well clear of other beach users on foot, especially children. As anglers are prevalent on the beach, using torpedoes, surfcasters and kites, it’s a matter of etiquette and practicality not to drive between a fisher and the water. Invisible to the naked eye, nylon lines could very well stretch between their position and the sea. Bad to hit for a vehicle, but potentially lethal for motorcyclists who may be thrown unexpectedly by lines at neck and chest height. It is a great coast to explore with off-road machines, but the fragile dune

faces are held in check from erosion by grasses and plants that can’t take the punishment of being run over. There are also wild animals and birds to account for, so it’s safest for all involved to stick to existing trails or the harder, more compacted sand of the main beach. That also means checking the tides before embarking, as a high tide can run all the way to the dune face. Have fun out there, and be respectful of other beach users. It’s everyone’s right to have a good time in the outdoors. Still, that right is tempered by a responsibility to preserve nature and look out for one another this summer. ¢

Surf lifesavers assemble

The annual fundraising appeal for the Northland Rescue Helicopter service has launched, with local electricity lines’ companies Northpower and Top Energy keen to match public donations dollar-for-dollar up to $200,000.

The 2019 appeal raised just under $250,000 and general manager of the service, Vanessa Furze, is hoping to raise a similar amount this year. “It has been a challenging year for us all and to top it off we are tracking for our busiest year on record, which will see us fly close to 1,000 missions,” she said. “As our mission numbers increase, our operational p Rescuee James McKenzie (left) and Sam Murtagh, costs grow higher, so we rely Flight Operations Manager for the Northland Rescue on donations from members of Chopper Service the public.” Northpower chief executive, Andrew his sentiments. p Surf lifesavers are gearing up for a busy summer all across the north, and Baylys Beach is no exception

The lifesaving heroes are set for a busy summer as holidaymakers make plans to head north, and recruiting new keen recruits is part of planning for the future. A barbecue sausage sizzle welcomed families to the beach under blue skies, a portent of weather to come, according to NIWA meteorologists. That, combined with a holiday season when Kiwis cannot go overseas for sun and sand, means that surf lifesavers have an important message for us all going into the hot months. “Take care to follow the advice, which Surf Life Saving New Zealand has put out there,” says Kyran, who notes that Labour weekend, coming this week, is an occasion when there will not be

active patrols on Baylys Beach. ‘If in doubt, don’t go out’ is one of those messages, along with perennial good guidance such as checking for riptides, swimming between the flags and taking care of younger or weaker swimmers. The west coast can throw in surprises like inshore holes and big waves, so it’s a place where caution and summer fun should go hand in hand. After a solid muster for the youngsters, Kyran and the club are feeling positive about summer 2020. He says it’s definitely not too late to join up with the juniors or to join the trainee lifeguard programme. There’s also the forthcoming dedication of surf lifesaving’s new hub at Baylys Beach to look forward to as construction draws to a close. ¢

Two major events on the Kiwi car culture calendar have merged into one this year, as the necessities of Covid lockdowns and precautions create strange bedfellows indeed. Well, perhaps not so strange; the alliance between the CRC Speedshow and Big Boys Toys is hardly a case of ‘opposites attract’. Both big shows have always taken place at the ASB Showgrounds in Auckland, both have been a celebration of horsepower and displacement. Both have attracted red-blooded auto aficionados with a slightly different pitch. Whether it’s daredevils on dirt bikes flying from massive ramps, supercars in all their finery or hot rods resplendent in chrome and flames. Add in extras such as strongman contests, axe throwing, JDM drift cars, Harley Davidson stunt riders and tons of cool technology, and you have several solid days of fun to enjoy. That’s before you get to the barbecue. Now, for 2020, a disruptive year has seen both shows shake hands and team up, in the manliest tag-team duo since the heyday of 1980s pro wrestling. That combo means no less than five entire showground halls filled with everything from drones to custom

Along the way, we’ll find out who takes the title as the best digger driver, top axe thrower and strongest man as well. Previous years have seen some memorable machines take centre stage at both the Speedshow and Big Boys Toys, including the time travelling Delorean from Back to the Future, the General Lee, KITT, the brand new Toyota Supra, Ferrari’s groundbreaking LaFerrari hybrid hypercar, the insane Nimbul Lamborghini drift racer and others inspired by everyone from Iron

Toyota’s hybrid range graduates u by Andy Bryenton

Want to feel a little bit old? The Toyota Prius, darling of the Hollywood eco-set, is 25 years old. The technology that powered it has come along briskly in a quarter century, and now the Hybrid Synergy Drive is packed into no less than eight Toyotas. The concept is simple; energy gets wasted when you brake or coast down a long incline. Recapturing it allows a battery to be charged up, allowing electrical energy to help the petrol engine of your hybrid along. So far, so simple. How it’s deployed, stored and shunted about to the correct wheels is where the fun begins. Now that the basic concept of Toyota’s often maligned, much misunderstood and equally lauded fuel-saving system is old enough to have earned a doctorate at university, is the idea still clever enough to tango with the likes of Tesla? Eight models and the issue of range say yes. While the Prius Prime adds the option to plug into the mains for more juice, the Yaris, CH-R, Corolla, Rav-4 and Camry hybrids all cleave to the original blueprint, albeit with much better, longerlasting batteries and added efficiency. Most of this range also eschews the ‘look at my green credentials’ styling of the classic Prius, which evokes mixed responses, from ‘didn’t the dog on Family guy have one of those’ to ‘are you my uber driver’, all the way through to ‘thank you for thinking of the trees’. Really, there are even more choices when you add the Lexus range

p Toyota premiered the Prius in 1995, making it a quarter-century old. That’s the difference between the last Model T and Jaguar’s XK 120 — now even their Lexus LC500 is hybridised

to the equation. Three crossovers, a sports coupe, a hatchback, and the IS, ES and big LS sedans all pack hybrid power. It’s only a short time since the HS, an upscale Prius rival with first-class comfort, more power, equal efficiency and better looks, bombed in the US because ‘how would anyone know I was driving a hybrid, like the movie stars?’ So what’s changed?

Perhaps it’s the prevalence of EVs and other hybrids popping up from other marques, making the idea ubiquitous. In a world with hybrid Ferraris and McLarens, a bit of choice from the ‘originators’ seems like good business. Then there’s fuel economy. Perhaps Covid has convinced us that being able to travel to get out and see the sights is more important than the sound of a

lumpy cam in a big V8. With the little Yaris delivering 3.3 litres every 100 kilometres, that’s a lot of road trips. Top pick? Well, the Prius Prime will set you back just about $50,000. That’s level pegging with the CT200h by Lexus, so I’d suggest going for the L badge option. After all, it’s still secretly made by Toyota. Just by their very best and brightest. No one will think you’re an uber, either. ¢
