The final election results have overturned the preliminary results for the Dargaville Ward, with Karen JoycePaki overtaking Brian John McEwing to secure the second seat alongside Eryn Wilson-Collins. Kaipara’s new deputy mayor is serving councillor, Anna Curnow, who replaces former deputy, Peter Whethey. Cr Curnow was elected for Otamatea Ward after serving as councillor for West CoastCentral Ward last term. “Cr Curnow is the highest-polling candidate in the Otamatea Ward, and she is a popular and well-known councillor whose interests and activities span much of the district,” said Mayor Jason Smith.” With councillors numbering four women and four men, Cr Curnow will also bring to our leadership team a gender balance reflecting the composition of the council and the Kaipara community we represent. “Importantly, based on my experience in the last 18 months I expect Cr Curnow and I will work well as a team and that we will be able to get on with the job quickly. I would like to thank outgoing deputy mayor Peter Wethey for his invaluable support and diligence during the previous term.” Apart from the two Dargaville Ward candidates, the remaining council positions are unchanged Councillors are: Eryn Wilson-Collins, Karen Joyce Paki (Dargaville Ward), Anna Curnow, Mark Vincent (Otamatea Ward), David Wills, Victoria Del La Varis-

p Maungaturoto Primary School students were aiming high when they invited the Lifestyler along last week to celebrate a milestone in successfully filling up the first 10-litre container of bread tags brought in by students and community members. The tags are sent to Bread Tags for Wheelchairs a charity based in South Africa who onsell them to a recycling company and used in the manufacture of seedling trays — the money raised pays for wheelchairs for people who are unable to afford to purchase one.

Mayors join landfill fight
500k for skateboard park
u by Paul Campbell
u by Paul Campbell
The Fight the Tip protest movement opposing a planned Dome Valley dump for Auckland’s rubbish, adjacent to and threatening the Kaipara Harbour, has received firm support from Kaipara Mayor, Jason Smith, and Whangarei Mayor, Sheryl Mai.
Mangawhai Activity Zone’s skatepark is to get $500,000 in the latest grant instalment from a Northland Regional Council sporting fund formed to share some $3.8 million amongst five regional sporting initiatives.
p Fight the Tip local ecologist Matt Lomast transporting signs (inset)
Dr Smith says the planned landfill by Chinese-owned Waste Management “is an unacceptable risk of poisoning the Kaipara Harbour as well as a threat to the Kaipara and Northland economy.” He has made this known to Auckland Council, which is charged with deciding on resource consent after the Overseas Investment Office approved the land purchase. Mayor Mai has now donated 22 election campaign signs to Fight the Tip, which will have them repainted to support their campaign. The signs will join those already placed near 1,000-hectare site in the Dome Valley in defiance of the tip plan. Dr Smith says the landfill, apart from threatening the Kaipara Harbour in the event of contaminant leak into the Hoteo River catchment at the dumpsite, is also of wider concern. “It will have an impact on the social, cultural and economic life of Kaipara and wider Northland. “There will be a projected 500 rubbish trucks a day driving between the tip site and Auckland. That will create a huge bottleneck on that goat track of a highway, delays for freight, for

produce, for livestock — people just heading to the airport or going about their normal business.” Fight the Tip has petitioned parliament, written to Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, and a rahui has been declared by iwi over the rubbish tip site. However, reaction so far has only come from Conservation Minister, Eugenie Sage. The minister has replied saying: “Unfortunately, we need landfills to put waste. “If this application hadn’t been approved, it would have meant a lot more trucks going right across Auckland because the landfill in the area is close to capacity. Totally appreciate people don’t want rubbish trucks past their front gate, but it’s (now) a decision for Auckland Council through the Resource Management Act.” Fight the Tip member Michelle Carmichael has asked the minister: “When is the government going to step in on behalf of the environment. “Listen to your own conservation department. Undo your decision and save us tax and ratepayers all the money of court time! Inappropriate site — bad decision ... simple!” ¢

NRC’s Kaipara Councillor Penny Smart, says the money is collected through a Regional Sporting Facilities Rate introduced via the council’s 2018–28 Long Term Plan. Mangawhai Activity Zone chair Colin Gallagher says the latest council funding will be “a major advantage for those budding Olympians to enable
them to train for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. We sincerely appreciate the benefits of this grant, not only for the skaters but also for the community.” Sport Northland Spaces and Places manager Stu Middleton describes it as “the last piece of the funding jigsaw for the MAZ trust.” ¢
NRC SMART INFORMATION WITH NORTHLAND REGIONAL COUNCILLOR KAIPARA WARD, PENNY SMART CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF NORTHLAND’S RETURNING AND NEW COUNCILLORS I am looking forward to working with the Kaipara District Council and Kaipara communities to continue the NRC mission of a healthy environment, strong economy and resilient communities. Weed and Pest Workshop at the Te Kopuru School on the 2nd of November, everyone welcome. The purpose of the workshop is to provide practical information and resources to help the community reduce pests and weeds. Kaipara is a hot spot for biodiversity. Many of our plants and animals are nationally threatened, (eg bittern, freshwater mussels). An ongoing community pest control programme will be discussed at the workshop to help reduce the pest threats and improve survival of these taonga. The workshop is free with lunch provided. Please register your interest early. Register by sending an email to jackib@nrc.govt.nz by Tuesday 25th October
ENCOURAGING SUBMISSIONS ON THE PROPOSED NATIONAL POLICY AND STANDARDS FOR FRESHWATER The proposed policy and standards (rules) will impact and effect all of Northland especially land owners. It is important to have input into how they are finalised. While the intent is good there are practicalities and associated costs in the detail that need to be further thought through. Some of the proposal may see the requirement for 5-metre fencing setbacks from rivers and streams, restrictions on land use change, and the fencing of natural wetlands larger than a 22-metre by 22-metre area. There are some very good submission templates to use on the Dairy NZ, Beef and Lamb, and Federated Farmers websites as well as the MfE website. It will be important to add your own examples and photos if appropriate. Please take the time to submit on these important issues.

Gala day for kids in need I will give my best u by Andy Bryenton

Dargaville locals will have a chance to support a very good cause at this weekend’s forthcoming Countdown Kids Mini Gala, the proceeds of which will go towards the supermarket’s appeal for hospitalised Kiwi youngsters.
The success of the Northpower company determines the possible dividend to consumers.
This year’s gala day falls on Saturday, October 26, with the action kicking off at 9am. Last year’s appeal raised tens of thousands of dollars for the cause, supplying lifesaving specialist equipment to aid doctor’s work in children’s health. Lease for shared future Keep our heroes flying u by Andy Bryenton
Chief executives Malcolm Nicolson of the Northland Regional Council (NRC) and Louise Miller of the Kaipara District Council (KDC) have signed an agreement for their teams to share office space in Dargaville, in premises built by the NRC. It’s a significant investment in Dargaville by the regional council, which benefits the Kaipara District Council as well. The shared space will be located at 32 Hokianga Road and will provide modern offices for both of the separate governance entities. Ms Miller says leasing a new space is an investment in the people of Kaipara. “The new building will enable our community and Kaipara District Council, as a small council, to benefit from the regional council’s investment in Dargaville. We will be able to work more closely with our colleagues on projects across Kaipara, and our community will have better access to regional and district council services in a developing civic hub,” she said. The current Kaipara District Council offices at 42 Hokianga Road were built more than 50 years ago, with a further extension added in the 1990s. There are currently weathertightness and asbestos issues. While these issues pose no immediate health concerns for staff or the public, they will require remediation. Shared office space in the NRC’s new premises was suggested as a practical alternative. The NRC first raised the option of sharing office space
This year’s Northland Rescue Helicopter appeal is off to a great start, with our local energy companies Northpower and Top Energy pledging to match the public dollar for dollar in a quest to keep the choppers in the air. Locally, Dargaville Ford has once again volunteered to host a big breakfast event on November 14 in association with More FM.
p The Kaipara District Council will vacate their current premises to lease office space in a new, Northland Regional Council building coming soon to Dargaville
p Rallying the public — donations came pouring in at last year’s Northland Rescue Helicopter appeal, now it’s 2019’s turn
when it was considering building an office block in Dargaville. Staff from the KDC carried out a review of all their properties and spaces (owned and leased), which they presented to councillors in February 2019. Options were rigorously discussed and reviewed at the council meeting in March this year, with members asking for further information, which was provided in May. The cost of the lease was included (and budgeted for) in the Long Term Plan 2018/2028. The new building is expected to be commissioned in April 2021. ¢
By the end of September, the rescue choppers had already flown more than 700 missions, assisting in saving lives and fulfilling a vital role in the region’s emergency health infrastructure. That’s part of in excess of 20,000 rescue flights during 30 years in the air, with new machines coming on board for 2020. Last year, Dargaville residents dug deep to donate thousands of dollars toward keeping the service in operation. This year, the challenge is on to think laterally, motivate your work colleagues or sports teammates, family and
friends, and come up with some novel ways to raise money for the appeal. The Dargaville Ford team have already provided the venue, and will once again invite a host of generous locals to assist in putting on a great breakfast on Thursday, November 14. The question is, what other creative ways can Dargaville locals think of to get involved? Check out some ideas at nest.org.nz/fundraising and get prepared by marking the 14th on your calendar. The fun begins early at 6am, so set your alarm as well! ¢

Sports achievers celebrated
u by Andy Bryenton
The 2019 Kaipara Art Awards saw more prizes awarded than ever before, with newly re-elected Mayor Dr Jason Smith hailing a ‘renaissance’ in our region.
This year’s Silver Fern Farms Kaipara Sports awards are fast approaching, and finalists have been announced across a wide range of sporting codes.
p Kaipara’s 2019 emerging talent — artist Erana Fenton receives her award
Creators on canvas, in mixed media, in sculpture and glass, oil and acrylic came together to hear the results of this year’s Kaipara-wide search for top artistic talent and vision, judged by former University of Auckland fine arts professor Dr Carole Shepheard. Dr Shepheard praised the level of ability on display, a sentiment echoed in the presentation speeches of both the mayor and the joint organisers of the exhibition, Mangawhai Artists Inc and the Dargaville Arts Association. “Art is one of the things, which brings us all together in this wonderful place,” said Mayor Smith. “What I have seen this year is a step up. I acknowledge the level of talent on display here. There is, if you’ll allow the term, a renaissance in the Kaipara right now, and art is at the front of it.” Five significant awards were selected from an eclectic collection of works.
Barbara Cope secured the award for painting with her acrylic on board Semblance B. The mixed media award went to Rosina Kamphuis for Number One Journeys. Lynn Middleton took home the print media award with The Joy of a Spring Day 1/1, while Pauline Mann’s Refraction, Reflection, Reversal was judged best sculpture. The emerging artist category, celebrating up-andcoming talent, was won by Erana Fenton for her work Tangi 1, Grace. The entire Kaipara Art Awards 2019 exhibition, comprising 66 works, will be open to the public free of charge in Mangawhai until October 29 at 45 Moir St, then moves to the Muddy Waters Gallery in Dargaville until November 26. Special thanks were expressed by the organisers in both contributing arts associations for the kind assistance of the sponsors, the artists and Dr Shepheard’s input as a judge. ¢
The annual awards seek to recognise those who have made significant contributions to the world of sports, both in their achievements as athletes and in the role of coach, adjudicator, mentor or official. Sport Northland has teamed up with major supporter Silver Fern Farms to present awards across 14 categories this year. Organisers have named the event ‘an opportunity to showcase some of the amazing people involved in sport and who make it happen’. These include the sportsman and sportswoman of the year for individual achievements of sporting excellence, the team of the year, awards for leadership, coaching, community impact and the award

The book launch for Mid-Century Living — The Butterfly House Collection was held last Tuesday, with locals gathering to hear the stories behind Christine’s expansive collection and how it reflects Kiwi society in the mid-20th century. “From furniture to toys and games, tableware to ornamental objects, Royal Family memorabilia to Kiwiana, Crown Lynn to hand-coloured scenic posters, together these objects are a gloriously nostalgic, colourful
and tangible record of the way we lived and the things we surrounded ourselves with. Christine has devoted her classic 1960s seaside bach, ‘The Butterfly House’ to housing her collection, transforming it into a beguiling mid-century fantasy that never fails to delight visitors,” publisher Penguin Books New Zealand said. Museum staff were equally enthusiastic about the local connection, and have arranged an exclusive tour of the Butterfly House on October 26, with tickets available from the museum reception. The book itself, full of colour photographs and personal stories for each item, is also available for sale.

Mangawhai gardeners will be out there working extra hard this Labour Weekend, as preparations begin for the charitable 2019 Mangawhai Garden Ramble. With all proceeds going to early childhood education in the town, organisers predict a busy weekend for the 16-year-old institution. “Every year the Mangawhai Garden Ramble continues to flourish,” says Joanna Rodgers, a representative of the Mangawhai Kindergarten. “We are really pleased and grateful to see new gardens added every year and are looking forward to welcoming lots of new and old faces for a great family day out.” This year 10 of the gardens being prepared, have never been open to the public before. On opening day, November 16, a total of 17 local gardens will have been crafted and planted out as works of art for botanical fans to enjoy. According to the event’s committee: “The Mangawhai Garden Ramble was established in 2003 by a dedicated group of mums, Kindy staff and other volunteers, to raise funds for both the Mangawhai Kindergarten and Mangawhai Playgroups. Every single dollar raised by the Mangawhai Garden Ramble goes towards the continued education, health and general support of our young children and their families.”
They also make the good point that ‘kindergarten’ is old German for ‘children’s garden’, which fits nicely with this fundraiser. Tickets are on sale now via mangawhaigardenramble.org for this family day out, complete with lots of activities for the kids. Meanwhile, those seventeen households kind enough to pitch in are hard at work with trowel and clippers, doing their part to make the ramble a success. ¢

Firefighters put to test
An inspirational ascent
Three young up-and-coming firefighters from Dargaville’s volunteer brigade are training hard as the deadline for their next stage of qualification approaches.
u by Andy Bryenton

Kiwi mountain climber and the first woman to ascend Everest without the use of oxygen, Lydia Bradley will visit Dargaville this month to serve as a keynote speaker at a motivational dinner engagement.
p Lydia Bradley conquered the 8,800-metre peak of Everest with no oxygen tanks, becoming the first woman and only Kiwi ever to achieve this feat of endurance p Young firefighters Sateke Tuanaki, Owen Cleary and Amy Melville are getting ready to embark on the next phase of their training, to the great benefit of civic safety in Dargaville
The trio, who all stepped up to volunteer during recent recruitment drive campaigns, has won the respect of their fellow fire and rescue first responders, and are now preparing to head off to Wellington to attend an intensive firefighting training course, which will round out their skills and equip them with knowledge. Amy Melville, Owen Cleary and Sateke Tuanaki will make the trip to Wellington with the full support of Dargaville’s fire chief and his senior staff. At a recent weekly training session, the three young aspirants lined up in full kit next to the Dargaville brigade’s veterans, who
are also imparting knowledge to this next generation. “Our volunteers are the backbone of the brigade, and taking their training to the next level is worthy of respect and admiration.” That’s the message from brigade officials, and it’s one, which also applies to the very young fire cadets who will one day soon follow in Amy, Owen and Sateke’s path. It’s also relevant to ex-police officer and department of conservation employee Colin Sloane, who will join next year’s induction to the Wellingtonbased course. ¢

Lydia is the world’s first woman to climb Everest without oxygen tanks and, so far, the only Kiwi to achieve this feat. She followed in the footsteps of the great Sir Edmund Hillary, but her achievements have moved beyond simple comparison to the hero on our $5 note, according to Peter Garelja, Dargaville Rotary Club President and host of the event at which Ms Bradley will speak, on November 6. “Lydia can proudly claim a massive list of impressive achievements, including being one of the few women to successfully guide Everest six times, and undertaking more than 20 expeditions to beyond 6,000 metres altitude, plus first ascents on
mountains in Pakistan and the Antarctic Peninsula, to name a few. She should prove exceptionally interesting.” Aside from the mental and physical toughness needed to conquer the world’s toughest mountains, Lydia is an experienced speaker and published author. Funds raised from the ticket price ($20, including supper catered by Dargaville High School’s Hospitality Academy) will be used to send young people on confidence-building and leadership inspiring outdoors courses, including, fittingly, mountaineering. Tickets are available at Dargaville Hunting and Fishing, Morans’ Bookshop or by emailing rotarydargaville@gmail. com. ¢

Rotary’s principal engagement Dargaville’s Rotarians gathered to welcome a new member last week; one who is already prominent in the community. Dargaville High School principal Mike Houghton officially became a member of the Rotary Club at a small ceremony attended by the head boy and girl of his own high school.
p Another new face joins the Dargaville Rotary Club — high school principal Mike Houghton
The senior educator was welcomed to the international Rotary Club ‘family’ by president Peter Garelja, who presented him with a certificate, a badge and a reflection on leadership from Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu “when a good leader’s work is done, people will say to each other ‘we achieved this ourselves’.” Mr Garelja has himself served as a principal before, and he reflected on the important role of a school’s leadership
in being inclusive, and empowering both faculty and students. Dargaville High School is already an active participant in Rotary’s international exchange student programme, with a student from Austria in attendance this year, and a young local man posted in Switzerland. Austrian exchange student Clara Liebmann was also present on the day to celebrate principal Houghton’s induction to Rotary membership. ¢
A gathering of extended family u by Andy Bryenton
Members of the Yakas and Milich families gathered this past weekend to celebrate their Dalmatian heritage and raise a toast to their ancestors who forged a new home here in the Kaipara during gumdigging times.
p A family brought together — the extended Yakas and Milich family reunion crowd proved almost too numerous to fit in one photograph as they gathered to celebrate their ancestry
Hundreds strong, the contingent from both families and their relations filled the Dalmatian Society Hall, where extended family trees on the walls traced the history of those pioneering settlers from back in the ‘old country’ to the present day. Of note was patriarch and early settler Nikola Marin (Nicholas) Yakas, born in 1887, who came to New Zealand in the early 1900s and co-founded the family

who gathered on October 19 to take a look back to the past. Historians Kaye Dragicevich and Frank Vinac presented their works on the gumdiggers’ era here in the Kaipara and on the West Coast, highlighting the importance of the Dalmatian diaspora’s impact on our young nation in aspects such as diverse as viticulture and metalworking, land clearance, boat building and fishing. ¢

LABOUR Weekend
The origins of the ‘start of summer’ u by Andy Bryenton
On the surface, Labour Day seems an odd holiday. Are we literally celebrating work by taking a day off on the last Monday of October? Perhaps the holiday, which is said to mark the ‘start of the outdoor season’ is all about working hard now to play later? In fact, it’s all down to a 150-year-old phenomenon and some clever politics. During colonial times, the old order of Europe was breaking down, and a new influential class were rising. These were not the old lords, earls and barons of the feudal system, but captains of industry, the owners of mines, railroads, cotton mills and iron foundries, to name but a few. Unfortunately, it was a bad time to be an average worker. With very little regulation in these new industries, safety measures were all but non-
existent, wages were low, conditions were harsh and hours were long. Many felt that they were worse off than when they were peasants in the servitude of the old aristocrats, but there were three new tools at their disposal. First was democracy. Workers in dangerous or poorly paid industries could vote for politicians keen to impose regulations, such as an end to child labour, or minimum wages. Second,

People were sympathetic with those who worked hard but were still poor despite long hours and great risks to life and limb. Third, was the union movement, which successfully lobbied for better conditions despite suffering what we would now call police brutality, driven by the very real fear of radical anarchism and communism. In 1890 an eight-hour workday was passed into p Labour day recognises the eight hour workday, and the end of immoral practices such as child labour, as seen here in a law for New Zealand workers 1900s textile mill across many industries. Stage set for double act William Shakespeare might be the definition of ‘a hard act to follow’, but British playwright John Godber is the man who did. Aside from the Bard of Avon, he might just be the single most performed writer for the stage in the United Kingdom’s history, and now Dargaville audiences are about to discover why. Godber covers the same solid theatre basics as Shakespeare, though with a vernacular that’s centuries apart. Romance, street fights, dirty wisecracks, blistering monologues and social commentary loom large in both playwrights’ work, though the language of John Godber is the street-level slang of contemporary England, familiar to anyone who’s ever watched British television. The Dargaville Little Theatre has chosen to perform a popular double feature of Godber’s works, Bouncers and Shakers, detailing the seedy and humorous, shocking and personal side of a night out on the town, and on the bottle. The theatre itself will become a cocktail bar as director Roxanne Kelly brings the audience into Godber’s world of punks, drunks, rowdy stockbrokers, philosophising doormen, lecherous DJs and a wait staff at the end of their patience. It’s a pressure cooker of a double billing, spanning two entire plays for the price of one. The atmosphere,

which builds in Shakers, (centred on the waitresses and their sharp-witted mockery of the riotous, sleazy, sad and hopeful drinkers they serve) transitions to a background of crass humour and barely contained violence as the Bouncers take the stage to show a doorman’s view of nightlife. Godber wrote the plays several years apart but rewrote the scripts performed for this iteration to balance them out and modernise the language. A third play in the similar style, in which a small cast once again impersonate and reimagine many roles, was released by Godber this year, so he’s still tapped

Frights and fun at social Tangiteroria Marae is planning to boost their refurbishment coffers with a Halloween social on November 2. Fundraising coordinator Evon Moir has masterminded this fun evening, when witches, ghosts and scary clowns will host a party for locals. Evon says that there’ll be a scary but fun-filled evening on offer, with live music from the band Happy Fish, and a haunted hay barn attraction. “Don’t be afraid! After all, it is Halloween, and you never know what awaits you; we can guarantee you a frightfully surprising night!” The event serves a double purpose; not only is it a chance for grown-ups to enjoy the costumes, candy and good times of Halloween, it’s also a fundraiser to help keep the marae in good shape, with upgrades planned in the months ahead. “After the kids have had their frights and fun on the 31st, it’s time for the adults p Ghoul’s night out — an adult costume party and social at Tangiteroria Marae this Halloween is raising to party, and all for a good refurbishment funds cause. There will be finger food and snacks, with BYO drinks and of midnight!” Revellers are invited to costume and call Evon 027 277 9772 refreshments. Ghosts, ghouls and good times This Halloween season the Kaiwaka Sports Association and Kaiwaka Playcentre are getting some fundraising support from a surprising group in the community; the walking dead. Zombies, vampires and spectres will be alive and kicking at their familyfriendly Fright Night on October 29. Organiser Cheryl Anderson explains that there will be three levels of thrills and chills available as the sports complex turns into a haunted house from 5.30pm. She and a dedicated team have been hard at work crafting a spooky experience complete with fog machines, cobwebs and mysterious monsters. “First up there will be a very mild haunted house session (no scarers, no loud music, no fog, lights on full), which would be suitable for preschoolers. Then the scare factor will be ramped up for the second session, which is suitable for primary-age children. After that, we will run an extra scary session in
darkness; only for the very brave!” With entry set at only $5 and preschool kids free, it’s a fun way to enjoy Halloween with the family. Kaiwaka Playcentre will be selling food and drinks to keep up the constitution of young adventurers, who can also win prizes in the costume parade. There’s also a post-fright supper, and attendees are asked to bring a themed plate of spooky sweet treats; there will be a prize for the most creative. Add to this face painting, a lolly scramble and a monster photo booth, and it’s shaping up to be, as Cheryl puts it, “a Fa-BOOlous night!” ¢

Forging a new enterprise u by Andy Bryenton
Centuries ago, the Vikings conquered a massive swathe of Europe thanks in part to their superior steelwork. People dig up swords, axes and armour to this day that are a testament to their smithing skills. Now self-proclaimed ‘Viking’ and qualified engineer David Hallberg has landed on the West Coast of New Zealand, to establish a thriving new business. Hailing from Sweden, David (known as ‘Dangerous Dave’ by his fellow CrossFit athletes and his team) brings skills with him from the oil industry in Scandinavia as well as certifications as a welder and fabricator. This ex-economist came to the area for the outdoors and the fishing, as well as to start West Coast Steelworx with his equally skilled crew. These are George, a Dargaville local who put in a decade of experience with Newman Engineering and who enjoys a metalworking challenge, and Jay, another qualified engineer who has a ‘finer touch’ for those tricky jobs. Together, they opened up shop next door to Douglas Logging earlier this year. When the work gets busy, David has a roster of other engineers, welders and fabricators to assist part-time. “The main focus is to be open to anything that has steel attached to it! p Heavy metal band — the West Coast Steelworx team are ready to take on the most challenging projects with skill
interior and exterior design. As we have it today, 75% of our workload is farmrelated engineering, service and repairs. The rest is a mix of boat and trailer modifications and design work. Quality and happy customers are very important to us, as well as a close relationship with our clients, making sure that they are happy and well informed on what we are doing for them.” The Steelworx crew have even ventured into art, helping create a piece displayed in this year’s Kaipara Art Awards, and charitable works, crafting ornate outdoor braziers to benefit
the forthcoming Northland Rescue Helicopter appeal. David and his team insist that there’s nothing made of metal they can’t fabricate, weld, fix or create, and they even extend their service to customers in the field. “We have one fully rigged 4x4 ute with a generator and air compressor that can handle most jobs out there, and we also have a trailer with a big generator and space to carry the supplies we need for any job. If you need pick-up and delivery, no problem at all! We have trucks and trailer to move projects big and small!” ¢

If your pet goes missing and is found, the finder can take a snapshot, and the facial recognition software can make a match, without the need for a microchip reader. Check it out here — animalregister.co.nz/. With summer approaching, it’s also time to consider flea treatment for your companion animals. Ask your vet about the latest advances in effective and long-lasting flea preventatives and flea eradicating methods so your pets can enjoy a season without itches and irritation. ¢

database can, therefore, be matched back to their humans with a quick click. A new form of technology added to the NZCAD arsenal is face recognition software. When deployed to search for people (for example, by police tracking a fugitive burglar) this kind of smart program matches distinctive features like eye colour, face shape and ear and nose structure to pick one person from a crowd, even from satellite images. It’s now possible to take a pic of your pet’s face and upload it, where it will be mapped with similar parameters.

If your pet can reduce stress hormones, lower your blood pressure and lessen anxiety symptoms, (which medicine proves they can), then the least you can do is to take a bit of uncertainty out of their lives in return. Each year, hundreds of pets are lost in New Zealand, but technology makes it easier than ever to reunite them with their families. That is in part thanks to the not-for-profit NZ Companion Animal Register, an organisation, which seeks to build a database of all Kiwi cats and dogs for just this purpose. Microchipping is now commonplace, alongside traditional and still very wise methods such as equipping your pet with a collar, complete with an engraved identity tag. Even in the worst-case scenario, where such a collar or tag is lost, a microchip is the first thing animal rescuers scan for after ensuring your lost pet is not injured. They say you can’t put a dollar value on the lowe of your pets. But researchers in the United States have. With illnesses caused by stress costing their economy more than $300 billion each year, it’s been calculated that the companionship of a cat or dog could save every last pet owner thousands of dollars of downtime, and put years on their lifespan. Not a bad trade for an opposable thumb and the electric can opener.
