Well in excess of a thousand people lined the parade route through the village, as more than 30 parade groups delighted the enthusiastic crowds. The road was closed between 2pm and 3pm, as the West Highland Pipe Band led the way for a float from The Kauri Museum, closely followed by pony club and other riders, the Battensby Bullocks of Lord of the Rings fame, line dancers, vintage cars and sports groups. Themes covered farming transport, the community, service groups, schools and many other facets of Kaipara life. The parade wound through the village to the showgrounds and there the afternoon was given over to a display of old time sports, later followed by a hangi, and in the evening, a ‘bush dance’ with pioneer costumes taking pride of place. The Kewpie Too charter boat also ran boat trips to points of historic harbour interest throughout the weekend. continued on page 3 . . .

A protest march will spearhead action in what is becoming ‘battle of the bridges’ over dilapidated creek crossings on SH2 at Matakohe. “We are calling on everyone concerned over the blocking of Kaipara’s main road artery to come and support us on November 10 at 10 o’clock,” said the spokesperson for the newly-formed Bridge Concern committee, Dennise Brownlie. The committee is calling on government to implement long-existing plans for a major deviation to cut out Hardies and Andersons’ bridges — single lane crossings recognised

by community leaders as totally inadequate on a major highway into the district. “We’re supported by Northland MP Mike Sabin, who’s asking why, with a roading budget for Northland of more than $200 million, they can’t find the $20 million needed to replace this dreadful piece of Kaipara roading,” Ms Brownlie added. “We plan to just saunter across Hardies Bridge from about 10am. We are making up placards, and call on the community to join us. This will be the first in a rolling series of protests. American motoring legends came to town over Labour weekend when the Ford Thunderbird Owners Club chose Dargaville for its yearly rally, annual general meeting and prizegiving “And what a welcome. It has been great, fantastic,” said committee spokesman, Graham Watts. The club packed in a busy schedule and were parked for display on Saturday morning at the Northern Wairoa Boat Club car park, with the public asked to vote for their favourite vehicle while the club members took a river cruise on the Daisy. From there it was on to a show and lunch at The Kumara Box, and a ‘road cruise’ to the Packard and Pioneer Museum at Mangatapere. On Sunday, the Thunderbirds headed south to The Kauri Museum, with public voting again encouraged to determine prize-winners at the AGM at the

Lighthouse later in the day. Lunch at Tokatoka followed. “Our convention is held annually over Labour weekend and it is established at our AGM where our next one will be held,” said Graham. “We rely on members to volunteer themselves to take the task on, so it’s great, we get to visit a different part of the North Island every year and have local knowledge so as we can take in all the sights and attractions that the region has to offer. “Huge thanks must go to Sue Taylor from Dargaville and Kauri Coast Visitor Information Centre for suggestions and the booking of some of the activities over the weekend.

I don’t think people should have to wait until a death occurs to see action from authorities to improve safety in this particular circumstance. “I am continuing my research work into the business case for this realignment and will be making the case to NZTA, and where relevant, to the Minister of Transport and Northland Roading Committee as soon as I have the relevant information in place.” Mr Sabin added he has engaged an Issues Assistant to collect information for his case for the bridges’ replacement.

Sunday offered church services and wood chopping events, the latter postponed from an inclement Settlers Day at The Kauri Museum. The influx of visitors strained local accommodation, with many visitors billeted out. Local businesses reported a huge turnover. Other features of the weekend were the stage production of Allen Adair, a play based on early Paparoa, bus tours of local historic sites. The celebrations culminated in a banquet of locally produced food. As Grand Parade marshal, Ralph Williams quipped: “A wonderful event, a huge crowd of locals and visitors — and we hope to see them again in another 50 years.”

Bennetts in the market square featured photographer Barry Clark, knitting and painting by Jan Clark and paintings from Ann Howard and Doreen Pygott. Included in the trail was Alene Featherstone, who recently won first prize in the Painting and Drawing section of the Gilmore Brown Kaipara Community Art Awards. The winning painting was showcased in her studio along with a selection of paintings, drawings and pastel works, including drawings of pioneers and historical bush themes. Pottery and ikebana from Angella, Barbara, Melissa and Arran Hockenhull featured at the Smashed Pipi Gallery, and Pauline Gough from the Dargaville Arts Association showcased her work in the foyer of the new Mangawhai Museum along with 30 other artists. A highlight at the museum was ‘Stingray’, a commissioned work by Joy Agar.

Construction to begin on new supermarket

After an initial delay due to challenges posed by the riverside site, Countdown has confirmed that construction on a new $22m supermarket is about to get underway

 Tests have been completed and construction can now commence on Countdown’s new store

The new supermarket will be in Victoria Street next to the current store but its replacement will be 50% bigger measuring 3,500 square metres with wide aisles, self-service checkouts and 218 car parks. The development means staff numbers are expected to increase from 86 to 120. The present store will stay open during the building process and will later come down to make way for more parking spaces. Countdown Dargaville manager, Snow Tane, says he is “happy about the new supermarket and excited that things are moving along.” National construction manager, Simon Scott added that because it is a unique site next to a river it had presented a number of challenges. “We have had to do a considerable amount of testing onsite before

foundation and construction plans could be finalised. Unfortunately, this testing has resulted in a small delay, but subject to approvals we should be underway with work on foundations before the end of the year.“ “This would have us tracking towards opening the new store in the second half of next year.”

“There are a number of challenges in Dargaville but there is also a massive opportunity to make a change and I have every confidence that we can do that here.” Corrections Assistant general manager, Maria McDonald said they aim to reduce re-offending by 25 percent through initiatives such as job training and community work. “In a small community like Dargaville — making a change in a few offenders’ lives can make a huge difference.” Around 50 percent of the approximate 240 offenders in the region covering Waipoua to Dome Valley are sentenced to community work. “They’ve done some amazing things such as clearing scrub at Kai Iwi lakes and cleaning up the main street of Dargaville and the community is really reaping the benefit,” says Mrs Cullen. The latest Department of Corrections annual report states that 68.4% of offenders sentenced to community work have not been reconvicted and 94.8% have not been imprisoned. The move from Gordon Street to the new facility at 37 Normanby Street was due to the cramped conditions and lack of resources. There is now desk space for all staff members, interview rooms, whanau rooms and a group room to facilitate family violence and similar meetings. Kaipara District Council commissioner, John Robertson officially opened the centre by cutting the ribbon and said he appreciated all the assistance given by community workers.

Dargaville may get an extra way to celebrate the new year with trust members hopeful that the cinema and auditorium will open soon “It’s a huge project but all being well with everything on track then it will be January or February. The good news is everything has been ordered — all the seats and projection equipment has been ordered as well as painting materials,” says Dargaville Cinema Trust member, Josie Scott. After picking a colour scheme, painting will began on Tuesday October 16, and the work will be carried out by 17 NorthTec painting and decorating students. “It’s work experience as well as helping out with community projects and that’s what NorthTec is all about,” says tutor, Mathew Wati. He says that students are looking forward to the challenge of panting a 90 year old building with intricate scrolling and cornices which they rarely get to experience. Vision of the owl

Obituary Douglas Milton Matich passed away in Dargaville, on 30th September, 2012, aged 84

Douglas was instrumental in the reconstruction of the wharf and reestablishment of the Ruawai Boating Club following Cyclone Bola and served as a member on the inaugural committee for a number of years. The wind vane at the wharf is a profile of his beloved boat ‘Porutu’ and the landing area between the wharf and weigh station was officially called ‘Doug’s Landing’. He was recently awarded Life Honorary Membership to the club and is the only person to have this honour bestowed upon them. Douglas was known for his sense of humour and generosity as well as his love of fishing, boating and the Kaipara harbour. He is survived by his wife, Nellie, four children and seven grandchildren. Mr Dale also undertook that the commissioners would undertake a genuine community consultation process on the new Long Term Plan. In recognition of the austerity facing the district, Grey Power requested a cessation of all council grants which it does not see as a core function of local government and greater sharing of existing regional facilities, including sports facilities. It also expressed its opposition to the curtailment of Dargaville Courthouse services and the continuing use of Anderson’s and Hardie’s bridges as one-way bridges, requesting the commissioners to support that opposition. Grey Power awaits with interest further briefings on behalf of the commissioners.

Born in the old hospital in Hokianga Road, he spent his early years with his family at Matich’s Bay on the Pouto Peninsula but because of a difficulty getting to school, at the age of 6, Douglas went to live with the Franich family at Otara Bluff. He attended the local Tangahai School until the early 40s when he moved with his family to Ruawai. As soon as Douglas was old enough he started fishing with his good mate Johnny Franich. Douglas attended Sacred Heart College in Auckland until, at the young age of 15, he began his career as a commercial fisherman. He would only take fish that were larger than the minimum size as he believed that if you looked after the fisheries and farmed them, the Kaipara would look after you. He was a very kind-hearted man and when times were tough in the early days, he would deliver fish free to families in need. Friends say he knew the Kaipara harbour like the back of his hand and manoeuvred expertly amongst the eastern banks when the tide was down in the days before depth gauges and GPSs. “We used to wonder if he had wheels under his launch,” says family friend and close fishing buddy, Des Subritzky.

Kaipara Grey Power representatives June Klenner, Garry Hooker and Stewart Quirk met recently with Kaipara District Council Commissioner Colin Dale to be briefed on the commissioners’ short term plans for our district and to put Grey Power concerns to him. Mr Dale advised that the commissioners already have embarked upon an investigation of what went wrong, the financial viability of our district, an assets review and an analysis of systems. A services review has been initiated, risk and audit monitoring established and it is proposed to consider a new Long Term Plan next year. It was asked that the commissioners consider the establishment of a community liaison group as earlier indicated by the former mayor and councillors and as desired by a number of community groups. In noting that many Dargaville ratepayers are facing enormous rates increases of $500–600 p.a. and a doubling of rates over the last four years, Grey Power emphasised that for many ratepayers current rates simply are unaffordable and must be reviewed. It also requested the adoption of a more realistic rates remission and postponement policy and that commissioners lobby Wellington for an increase of allowances under the Rates Rebate Scheme, which allowances have not kept pace with council expenditure. In March this year the rules around building changed for the better, in a move heralded by the government as a step forward in regulating the industry and safeguarding consumers A huge part of this law change was the implementation of a definition for ‘restricted building work’ — any work which affects the structural integrity and weathertightness of a building. The more obvious implication of this law was clearly apparent — that after March 1st 2012 it would be an offense to undertake such work as a builder, roofer, architect (or a number of other registered trades) without the correct certification. Builders who are allowed to undertake such work gained (at minimum) the name of Licensed Building Practitioner, an insignia which is now visible on the signs and company vehicles of many local professionals. A lesser known part of the law is even more pertinent to those who are considering using cheap, unlicensed labour to undertake restricted work. This clause states that it is also an offense to knowingly engage an unlicensed person to undertake restricted work — meaning that the customer as well as the unlicensed tradesperson is liable under the law.

Tradesmen Contracts and consents – the essentials When building a home or renovating an existing home, one of the major factors in customer confidence is peace of mind For those larger jobs, true peace of mind comes from having an easy-to understand, comprehensive contract. A contract puts down in writing exactly what to expect and what must be delivered, removing the chance of misunderstandings, communication breakdowns and acrimonious disputes. Rather than being seen as ‘unnecessary paperwork’, a good contract should be viewed by both parties as an agreement to facilitate the best result possible. A good example of such a contract comes from Certified Builders, who offer the option of a HomeFirst builders’ guarantee with ten years of coverage. This comprehensive document covers not only the quality and fitness of workmanship, but also makes provision

Standards NZ have also produced a versatile and robust building contract which may be used for most building work. Finally, it’s always your option as a customer to draw up your own individual contract, after taking appropriate legal advice. The other hugely important document in the building process is the application for resource consent submitted very early in the process. The biggest change to this part of the building procedure also centres on the new building law – consent documents now require you to provide the details of the correctly licensed builder who will oversee construction. Needless to say, consents are unlikely to be handed down for projects without the a properly accredited professional in charge!

Without our in-built healing systems our first health problem may well have been our last! The health issues that we experience are often the result of these repair processes not working properly or at worst even working against healing. When unwell we need to make sure these repair processes are able to work as well as possible. If not you may be consigning yourself to a lifetime of poor health. Every health problem creates its own nutritional requirements. For example, people with inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn’s Disease or Ulcerative Colitis have a lower level of vitamin and mineral absorption because their digestive system has been compromised by the disease. This is especially true of some B vitamins, notably B12 and folic acid, vitamin D, calcium and zinc. These can be obtained from a good multi-nutritional supplement. Additionally anti-inflammatory compounds such as those in acai, grape seed and turmeric can be useful if given in the right combinations and doses. As an example of how this works in practice, I have been helping someone with arthritis, muscular pain and low energy. After investigation we found she had long standing arthritis and had developed statin myopathy. This is the muscular weakness and pain from long term use of cholesterol lowering medications. These can also interfere with normal energy metabolism as they restrict co-enzyme Q10 needed for energy conversion within cell mitochondria. We made sure her diet was anti-inflammatory then added a broad spectrum multi-nutritional supplement plus a high grade CoQ10 supplement. I have just spoken to her and after only two months she has had a major reduction in muscle and joint pain and has had a significant increase in her energy levels. While her results have been excellent there was nothing particularly difficult about what we did. We just identified the healing processes compromised by disease and medication then added these from both supplements and a good diet. If you are unwell, it maybe your body telling you things are not well. If things are not what you would want them to be it may pay to review what you are doing and then to implement measures to rebuild your healing processes. Give me a call if you need help. “It’s what they call ‘the Peter Jackson effect’ — the politicians are very good at promoting it and movies are a cool thing to do, so we have piles and piles of students doing media studies, with no chance of a job, and with all the negative commentary around agriculture, we have less and less students signing up to do agricultural science degrees.” When Ian studied agricultural science in the 1970s he says that the industry was thriving and farmers were perceived as ‘hard working good blokes’ and he believes the perception has changed in 2012 to ‘environmental monsters’. “When the majority of people think about farmers they think about effluent going into the waterways and animal health and that’s what goes on the television. ‘Generation y’ likes to be liked. They like to be contributing to society in a constructive and positive way and if the dairy industry is akin to cigarette manufacture — why would they go there?” He believes that there needs to be a serious attitude change to farming for the industry to continue, grow and prosper and attract newcomers. “While you have that populist thinking that farming is always going to be bad for the environment people aren’t going to want to go into the industry. I actually think that we’re being given a bad rap — we’re being blamed for past misdeeds because we didn’t know they were misdeeds such as clearing kauri forests in the nineteenth century.”
