SLSNZ Northern region, chief executive officer Matt Williams, said the northern region was currently finalising the delivery of its services for the 20172018 summer. “Despite considerable and increased support from Northland Regional Council the reality is that the planned council funding available to provide these services will not meet the cost of providing them at all of the beaches that have previously been patrolled, or in some cases over the times the services
have previously been provided,” said Mr Williams. The funding shortfall has occurred in previous seasons before. The Kaipara District Council leaves patrol funding to the NRC, and believes a wealthy benefactor floated the cost of patrolling Bayly’s last summer. This was confirmed by Mr Williams. “The provision of additional patrols at smaller locations such as Baylys Beach has only been possible through additional philanthropic funding support
being secured, season-by-season and not guaranteed.” In the meantime Surf Life Saving Northern Region is seeking support for unfunded services from philanthropic sources and will be engaging with the NRC to do so. The cost of patrol services for 21 days is set by SLSNZ at $29,900, not including capital expenses (for equipment) or logistics costs. continued on page 3 …

No surf patrol for Baylys Beach
u by Anna Harding
The Dargaville Business Forum has elected a new chair and committee with plans to “make things happen” in the business community.
p Zoe Macready heads into the surf during the Mangawhai Heads Volunteer Life Saving club preseason training camp held recently p Principal and sales consultant of Ray White Dargaville, Jean Johnson, is the new chairperson for the Dargaville Business Forum
Jean Johnson is chairperson, Lance Warmington vice chair, Sue Curtis the secretary, and Sharon Constable, treasurer, with Craig Woollam, Sheena Mckenzie and Penny Smart making up the rest of the committee. “Every town needs a business forum. We need to network, we need to know what’s happening and we need to help out different businesses in the area - new ones, existing ones and even those who have been in business for many years. That’s what we’re here for,” said Jean. “We had a good meeting and lots of people were very enthusiastic. They all want to see something happen here in Dargaville. We also had a couple of new people, which was really encouraging.
“It is a big networking thing and it’s about getting new ideas coming through. We all have to work as a team to get something out of it.” Changes and initiatives the forum came up with at their meeting were reducing the annual fee to $50, running a Christmas shop window display competition and getting businesses on board to trial staying open till 6pm on Friday nights. The Christmas window display competition will finish Tuesday, December 5 and businesses will be handed an entry form soon. For more information contact the Dargaville Business Forum on 021 608 606 or business@dargaville. org.nz. ¢
On the east coast however, a thriving Mangawhai Heads Volunteer Lifeguard service has had its first weekend on patrol for the 2018 season. Club captain Brad Kehoe said patrols were “looking strong and healthy” and the club recently held a pre-season camp involving 38 lifeguards and 10 instructors from across the region. The Mangawhai Heads club has been focussed on upskilling newly qualified guards and recruiting new bronze award candidates. As well as swimmer safety the club also has boat safety firmly on the agenda and members have been
working closely with Maritime New Zealand and Coastguard with a focus on the bar, as boat use sets to increase with the warmer weather. “Mangawhai will be rolling out informative signs at the estuary boat ramp targeting new boaties to the area. While the signs portray a clear message to boaties, the club advises strong caution when crossing the bar.” The first session of junior surf training is also approaching for children and young teens between ages four to 14 on October 29. Michelle and Dayle Fenney from Big D BBQ in Ruawai recently attended the Jack Daniels National BBQ Championship in Napier where they took away a second placing.
Three power lifters from Dargaville struck gold and broke a New Zealand record at the National Bench Press Championship in Whangarei.
p From Left: Empire Liquor Dargaville’s Peter Gibson and Donna Dreadon who sponsored Michelle and Dayle Fenney from Big D BBQ
In between dairy farming and raising children the couple have taken their passion for barbecuing to a national level. It’s the first time the competition which runs over eight separate events has been held in the country. “We are the only new team to get placed in the top 10 and get a placing in the Napier round, so we did pretty well,” says Dayle. Using their wood burning barbecue they are required to submit six portions of chicken, ribs, pork and beef with their team of four. “You’re up all night and have turns sleeping,” said wife Michelle. “The guys that we’re competing against all help you out even though
you’re competing against each other. You’ve all got the same passion but you’ve got your own taste and own sauces,” said Dayle. Not only have they started competing but the couple have also started selling their barbecue meat in the last month. “It was just meant to be a hobby but it’s taken off,” says Dayle. Doing all their marketing over Facebook they have started attending events such as the Whangarei Gourmet night market and the Dargaville Riverside produce market. Their success will be tested once again when they head to Wellington next month for the next stage of the competition. ¢
p From the left is Jessica Tregidga and Stephanie Sugden — two lifters from Dargaville who won gold at the National Bench Press Champs
Jessica Tregidga won gold in the sub junior (14-18 year-olds) 63kg class, with a 55kg New Zealand record bench press. She also received the award for best sub junior female lifter. This was her first national competition, after being involved in the sport for two years. She said that trying to beat herself and the support from people such as Brian and Karen Froggatt and brother Ethan, is what keeps her motivated. With her achievement she said “I was quite shocked and completely amazed, it was a really good feeling.” Stephanie Sugden, who only started competing in April, got gold in the Junior
(19-23 year-olds) 84kg class with a 77.5kg bench press. “I did a local competition at Brian’s Gym and loved it. It’s really good to compete against myself. So inspiring to see all the strong athletes we have in New Zealand.” Brian Froggatt, owner of Brian’s Gym competed once again, as he’s gone to almost every competition since it started in 1997. This year he got gold in the 50-59, 74kg class with a 130kg bench press, and best M2 (50-59-yearolds) Master Lifter. A weight lifter since 1973, Brian says that it’s “the challenge to keep getting stronger” that keeps him going. ¢

Free antenatal classes Raising harbour awareness u by Anna Harding

Dargaville’s Te Ha Oranga are running their first free antenatal class in November. It will be facilitated by Evelyn Suhren and Koha Aperahama, with a Maori philosophy behind it, with all welcome, not just Maori.
Over 100 people came together last week to discuss creating a healthy and productive Kaipara Harbour with the Integrated Kaipara Harbour Management group.

we share stories and look at it from a Maori world view.” Children, fathers and anyone else that pregnant mothers would like to have there, are welcome. Morning tea, lunch and transport as far as Tangowahine, Pouto and Waipoua will also be provided. Te Ha Oranga ask to know numbers in advance for organisation. Pregnant mums will also receive baby gift packs and there’ll be spot prizes. The classes are on Wednesday and Thursday, November 22-23, 9.30am2.30pm. For more information contact evelyn.suhrena@tehaoranga.co.nz or 0800 698 342. ¢
Preliminary results shared on the day from a NIWA research survey showed that the scallop population is severely depleted, with only one main high density scallop bed remaining in the harbour. Fur ther investigation and interpretation of results is to be undertaken. However the IKHMG says improvement of the current situation is easy. “Fencing and riparian planting has been proven to improve and restore catchment areas by providing a barrier to reduce sedimentation.” Councils and landcare groups provide significant support and assistance to landowners both with funds and practical information and handson work. ¢

With Dargaville hospital only doing traditional antenatal classes on request Te Ha Oranga Tamariki Ora nurse Evelyn saw a need for the class. “It’s a huge gap when you’re pregnant, not to be informed about what to expect, during labour and birth, and the different processes.” Evelyn hopes there will be more classes like this in the future, depending on the feedback from this one. Koha said that the class will be interactive and not sitting and listening. “It will be Wananga style, which means we come together and share information in a collective space —
The full day event was held at Te Hana and involved speakers from NIWA, Northland Regional Council, Auckland Council, farmers within the extensive catchment and iwi partners, plus supporters from the community. “The concerted effort of all these groups is to bring awareness to the key issues and threats of the degradation of the Kaipara Harbour by working together to restore the harbour from sedimentation runoff and shared stewardship of the land and harbour,” said group administrator Jane Worthington. “The harbour is New Zealand’s largest estuarine ecosystem that is crying out for substantive restoration work to reduce sedimentation and improve water and habitat quality.”

Showcasing quilting
OBITUARY
u by Joanna Manson
Caryl Josephine Smith
The Otamatea quilters will be displaying their craft of patchwork and quilting during an annual exhibition at the Kauri Museum from October 20 to November 19.
Caryl ‘Dottie’ Smith passed away suddenly on October 2, and was later farewelled by mourners from across the Kaipara at Matakohe War Memorial Hall.
p The 2016 Otamatea Quilters exhibition
The group has been making quilts for more than 30 years and chief executive officer, Lisa Tolich said this year’s exhibition will see both the volunteers’ hall and the boarding house filled to capacity. “Quilts in the exhibition range from entirely hand worked to machine stitched, embroidered, embellished, contemporary and traditional,” said Lisa. “These quilts reflect many hours of work done by dedicated needle workers.”
Members of the quilting group will be at the museum from October 2023 to assist with any questions about the craft. During the expo quilts made from donated materials will be for sale with proceeds donated to a local charity. October 20 will also mark the opening of supporting exhibition ‘A stitch in time: Samplers through the ages’ which will showcase the museum’s rich textile collection. ¢
As a photographer for the Kaipara Lifestyler, Caryl made a special mark in one of the many successful activities she took on in a very busy 65 years. “Mum had a real thirst for knowledge, and completed many further studies later in life, including archaeology, psychology, word processing and editing, and photography,” said her daughter Rebecca. “At home in Matakohe Mum and Dad always had an open door and many waifs and strays were welcomed with open arms and a hot meal in their time of need.” “There are many other legacies left by Mum, and some of her various endeavours and contributions to the community included time in rural mail service, telephone exchange p and rural delivery.” Caryl also served with Saint John Ambulance, the Ethnic Shop in Dargaville, with Friends of the Kauri Museum, the Linking Hands Health Shuttle, the Community Organisation Grants Scheme, North Kaipara Coastguard and the Otamatea Repertory Theatre. She was also to the forefront of many community fundraising events

in Matakohe and Tinopai. “Mum loved to travel, and my kids and I had just enjoyed a magical cruise to Tonga and Fiji with mum and dad, and we will always be grateful for this special time we spent together,” said Rebecca. Caryl is survived by her husband Bobby, son Mathew, Rebecca, and four grandchildren. ¢

Lifting the spirits of each other
From farming to the bends An afternoon out in the boat to dive for scallops turned into a different type of adventure for Maungaturoto farmer, Logan Diamond. “I was out diving in the Whangarei Harbour at a favourite spot and had been down a few times. On my next dive, I started feeling a bit average but kept going, and before long I wasn’t feeling very good at all,” Logan says.
p From the left is ‘NV Beauty’ owner Nicole Vuletich who did the waxing, stormwater engineer Matt Smith, infrastructure field officer Jenny King, and operations engineer water services Brian Armstrong, who shaved Jenny’s hair
“One of our colleagues has got breast cancer. When I found that out I thought, ‘what can we do to fundraise?’ and I asked her if she’d be open to something like this, so it sort of snowballed from there,” said infrastructure field officer Jenny King. “I said to staff ‘if we can
raise $1,500 I’ll shave my head. It’s been an awesome team building thing and if it saves one person’s life it’s worth it. “About eight years ago I did the same thing for ‘Shave For a Cure’, and I have to say the level of nervousness isn’t any less this time,” she said. Stormwater
engineer Matt Smith also offered to part with his hair for the cause. “I’ve had family members and others that have dealt with this and Jenny said she’d shave her head if we all raised $1,500, so I said ‘if you can raise $3,000 I’ll get waxed’. ¢

FINE LIME
At the Pahi camping ground are two very tall Norfolk Island pine trees towering over a children’s play area and caravan sites. Heavy branches have broken off at irregular intervals, sometimes falling, sometimes caught up in the top portion of the tree. Someone has persuaded those in authority to declare them as ‘Trees of Note’. It appears that the KDC is hiding behind this edict in order to avoid the cost of removing them. Let’s be realistic about this. They are dying. They are past their use by date. Dead branches can be seen hanging

like the Sword of Damocles waiting the arrival of an unsuspecting child to play underneath. Last time it took over a month after a dead branch was reported for an arborist to arrive. We were invited recently to attend a meeting at the Pahi Hall so the mayor could listen to suggestions. He seemed to be a nice sort of fellow but I could not see him interested in our problem when he has such little time left in office as KDC is once more playing musical chairs. Trees of Note? “I must have come up too fast or too many times, and once I was back in the boat that last time, I really felt like it was all closing in on me. Down on the sea bed, I had felt like I was going to vomit and the feeling just got worse. Something definitely wasn’t right. I felt like a bad mix between sick and drunk.” Once back on shore, Logan vomited, but still tried to make it home, where he was found by his wife Zaria, asleep in his ute and still in his wetsuit. Panic kicked in and Zaria stripped him of his wetsuit, dressed him and got him into her car to take him to Whangarei Hospital. “I was panicking but didn’t want to show our two-year-old that, so I just hurried to get him into my car to take him to hospital. I knew it wasn’t good. On arrival, they said a nitrogen bubble might have passed through his brain and by that point I was a trembling mess but holding it together for him and our baby,” Zaria says. “I felt better when they said the rescue helicopter was on its way to collect him and take him to Auckland, as I knew it meant he would be getting help faster. Without that helicopter, I don’t know if he would still be here today for his kids and me.” The Nor thland Rescue Chopper transported him to North Shore Hospital, t h e c o un t r y ’s s p e c i a li s t h o s p i t a l for dealing with the bends . Logan remembers it well, despite his condition. “ The guys in the helicopter were so professional. They came in and spoke with me before the flight and made me more comfortable about what was ahead. During the flight, they talked to me the whole way and kept me informed – even when we were on the roof of the other hospital, they kept reassuring me.” To read more about Logan’s story nest.org.nz

Spring cycle trail
Home sweet home

u by Anna Harding
With a love for the North, keen cyclists from Auckland Rob and Fiona Wadmore, have initiated a ‘Donnelly’s Crossing spring bike ride’ coming up on Saturday, November 4.
Ken Righton grew up in the Kaipara and has lived in Auckland for the last 20 years. As part of our ongoing new residents’ series, we chat to Ken about what brought him back home.
p Keen cyclist Rob Wadmore, who has initiated a ‘Donnelly’s Crossing spring bike ride, happening Saturday, November 4
“We have been coming to the Dargaville area for some years and have always seen the potential of the old Donnellys Crossing-Kaihu Valley railway formation as a cycle rail trail,” said Rob. With the Kaipara District Council’s recent walking and cycling strategy in mind, Rob said “we hope this ride will give people a taste of what may lie ahead as these ideas are implemented. We look forward to seeing these ideas coming to fruition in the near future.” The 28 km ride starts at the old Tutamoe school and follows Marlborough and Kaitu roads to Donnelly’s Crossing. From there it follows the rail formation, goes across farmland, through streams
and on gravel and sealed roads, ending at Kaihu Tavern. Briefing for the ride starts at 9am at Donnelly’s crossing, then shared shuttles will take cyclists up to the school, with an expected start time 9.45am. The ride coincides with the Donnelly’s crossing car boot sale where there’ll be hot and cold drinks, a sausage sizzle and entertainment from 10am, with an evening bonfire and fireworks. p Ken Righton who’s come back to Kaipara after 20 years
“I was born in Whangarei and my dad was a retired soldier and was billeted on a farm at Te Maire, so I went to Te Kopuru School and Dargaville High School.” After becoming an electrician and working at the Dargaville dairy factory, Ken made the move to Auckland in 1996, to become a freelance electrical consultant, and for the next two decades he worked all over New Zealand. “I got into a few residential jobs. One was Dotcom’s house, as the design services engineer, which is all disciplines — electrical, plumbing, drainage, security, automation the whole
lot. And that was fantastic — a very nice job.” He was also a St John’s volunteer and in the military for 17 years, part time, as a territorial soldier. “I retired last year at Christmas and moved to Pouto with my wife Linda, as I’ve had a bach there for years.” “Living in Auckland is a pig — there’s quite a thriving community minded status here in Kaipara, lots of people doing things. It seems to be good and healthy.” “It’s a lovely place with a lot of history which I’m getting quite interested in, especially around Pouto.” ¢

Welcome to Mangawhai Grand opening for trust
A ‘wow factor’
u by Joanna Manson
The Te Whai Community Trust in Mangawhai will be hosting a ‘grand opening’ on October 28 after finding a new home in the old Tara Road school house. After two years of looking for a suitable building, the Pioneer Village will now be home to the trust which acts as a first point of contact to direct people with specific needs to the services they require. Board member Isabel Hollis said the trust will be at the premises Monday afternoons from 1-4.30pm and Thursday mornings from 9am-1pm. Te Whai was formed two years ago due to lack of services and support groups in the area. “We’ve had a real struggle getting premises and in the end we decided to do a presentation to the mayor and deputy mayor. As a result they must have liaised with the Pioneer Village,” said Isabel. The school house will also act as a drop-in centre and office. The opening will start with a blessing at 11am and a variety of public services including Victim Support, counsellors, wellness practitioners, Plunket, elderly

Welcome to Mangawhai City to the bush u by Joanna Manson
From November 1 Mangawhai will be home to one of New Zealand’s best luxury camping sites thanks to an entrepreneurial couple from Auckland who also hope to give up the bustle of the city for the peace of the bush. Ryan and Rachel McQuerry have spent the last two years ‘reviving’ a 13-acre block of native bush, taking it from an overgrown state to a sanctuary offering a sustainable, off-the-grid and device-free retreat. They have been commuting from Auckland for the project and now they hope to set up a permanent residence in the community next year and pursue their glamping business. “We bought a property a few years back with the idea that we’d one day build a holiday house on it. We chose Mangawhai due to the beautiful surf beach and the native bush that you get when you get up in the hills towards the Brynderwyns,” said Ryan. “There were two old huts in the bush that had been built many years back by one of the previous owners and we
EITHER WAY IT’S 20K
originally thought we’d take these down as they weren’t much good for anything. But after some time we started to realise they could be done up to create a really special little retreat in the bush.” In the last six months they gave remodelled the huts — named accordingly Kauri Tree Hut. The slick accommodation has already caught the eye of many and between November and April most weekends are booked with weekdays starting to also fill. “It offers a truly serene, relaxing experience set amongst remnant bush. It’s a place to completely forget about the busyness of life and just relax and enjoy the simplicities of glamping.” For more information visit canopycamping.co.nz/listings/kauritree-hut/ ¢

Get growing for a great cause u by Andy Bryenton
Stop men from dying too young — that’s the message from the Movember foundation ahead of this year’s annual month of awareness and fundraising for men’s health. Statistics show that on average women outlive men by six years — a stubborn and persistent number which has not budged despite massive advances in the life expectancy of Kiwis. Men are also prone to the all too common ailment of ‘just hardening up’ — not visiting the doctor when they know they should, and not confronting mental illnesses such as depression for fear of social ostracism. Attitudes are changing, thanks in a big part to events like the annual November push by the Movember
foundation to raise awareness of health issues predominantly affecting men. The battle against such diseases as prostate and testicular cancer is underway, with researchers and doctors working hard toward a cure. The fight against suicide and depression is also on, with more and more men coming to understand that they are not alone and that help is at hand, even in isolated rural communities. This week you’ll see a whole host of local businesses in our publication flying the flag for Movember.
We’ll be making a donation for each and every one of them to the big Movember appeal — but you can help
in your own way too. Visit nz.movember. com/ to find out how, and let’s make a change for the better. ¢

Joint forces for better driving u by Andy Bryenton
They say the more things change, the more they stay the same. And that’s certainly what the public want when one of the businesses they rely on finds that it’s time for an expansion or a market re-positioning. Right now, just such a change is coming together at Dargaville’s DAE automotive centre, and it looks like the winners here will be the motoring public, both on and off-road. That’s because the trusted auto electrical workshop side of the business is coming under the command of well known local Sam Talijancich, proprietor of Area 51 Automotive. With
a reputation for sourcing top parts and crafting extreme modification for offroad vehicles, Sam already has quite a pedigree under the hood. At the same time, he knows the value of experience

Lots to celebrate as appeal lands u by Andy Bryenton
The Northland Rescue Helicopter appeal is landing in Dargaville after a triumphant tour through the top end of the nation, raising funds to continue saving local lives. The big venue for our local party has been a while in the works, but it’s something extra to celebrate for the hosts, Dargaville Ford. As well as forming a fitting backdrop for the festivities on November 17, Dargaville Ford’s new yard has provided the dealership with the opportunity to spread out and really display the range from the Blue Oval brand to their best advantage. Taking the place of a long-disused Normanby Street hardware store, the carefully levelled and brightly floodlit apron of concrete houses row on row of cars and utes, declaring that Dargaville is definitively Ford Country. Come the 17th, there’ll be even more to see on site than the usual array of steel and chrome. More FM will broadcast live from the crack of dawn at 5:30am, and the displays, demos, sizzling sausages and fun will last well into the twilight. It’s interesting to note that in previous years, when Dargaville Ford boss Lindsay West and his team invited local Ranger ute owners to come back ‘home’ for a re-union, the lines of polished vehicles stretched all the way to the corner. Now the yard itself looks like this 24/7. That’s a testament to the appeal of New Zealand’s best selling truck, which rolls into another year of market dominance despite a record number of new competitors in the light commercial sector. The Ford Ranger is yet to peak, with Ford bosses revealing

Riverside projects make progress u by Joanna Manson
Completion of the footpath extension along the Dargaville riverbank means stage two of the project which involves developing the ‘feature spots’ along the path, including the band rotunda, toilet block and wharf area, is about to begin.
‘Wahines and Cupcakes’ u by Joanna Manson
With the arrival of the breast screening bus in Dargaville, Te Ha Oranga held a morning tea to raise awareness for both cervical and breast cancer last week.
p Plans for the showing the next stage of development along the riverside path
KDC Parks and Community manager Darlene Lang said the plans include large feature steps down from the path to the band rotunda saying she hopes to turn the area into a focal point within town. “It would be cool for people to be able to sit on the lawn and listen to a band. There is power and everything there so people are more than welcome to do that,” she said. Further along the path nearing the toilet block a smaller path will be established as a link to the riverside pathway. The makeover will also include new plantings and the help of local community youth group ZEAL putting together designs to paint
the block with a mural. The last area of development will be the wharf which will involve widening the space as well as establishing seating and planter boxes. “We’re also doing designs and costing at the moment for a pontoon so boats can use it. That will make the space a functioning area. We want to create these hubs where people can go and enjoy and we’re trying to make everything we do connect with the river.” So far Darlene says feedback on the new footpath extension has been positive with locals and visitors using it — from kids using remote control cars to mums with prams, walkers, and those using a push bike. ¢
p Te Ha Oranga clinical nurse manager Rhonda Zielinski-Toki with participants in the cancer awareness meeting
Kaipara locals who attended were able to make appointments to visit the bus which will be outside Dargaville Countdown until November 24. Guest speaker at the event was Te Ha clinical nurse manager, Rhonda Zielinski-Toki who shared her own breast cancer journey after being diagnosed at age 42 with grade three, invasive cancer. Encouraging women to get checked she said: “It’s such a painless non-
event — in the scheme of things it’s nothing.” She said both breast and cervical cancers can be highly treatable if discovered during routine check ups. “It can be a bad diagnosis with a good prognosis, that’s my message to you today,” she said. “I just wanted to share my journey because I guess what confronted me when I got diagnosed is that I could have died — I could have ignored it.” ¢
