by Paul Campbell A public meeting called by the Mangawhai Residents and Ratepayers Association has given the Kaipara District Council a three-week deadline to respond to its concerns over expenditure on the community’s EcoCare sewage scheme “We had some 150 people at the meeting on Sunday of Labour Weekend and there were growing calls for action against the council which included options such as direct action including occupation of the council chambers as well as a rates strike,” said the association treasurer, Bruce Rogan. “We will be looking at these and other options suggested at the meeting over the next little while,” he added. “We are also going to re-issue our previous request for an audit of all council financial transactions to ascertain what money was spent on the EcoCare system and where it has gone. We have given council until December 13 to respond. If there is not a change in their attitude we will do all in our power to implement protest action.” In a letter to Kaipara Mayor Neil Tiller, the association had stated: ‘We make the general observation that we will only refrain from pressing our case further if we see a marked Mangawhai residents raise their hands to support change in the attitude of council towards the legitimate a suggested sit-in protest at the Kaipara District Council Chambers concerns of the community, and a completely open collaborative approach to identifying and solving the problems on that does not appear to have offset any of this expenditure. The mayor the part of everyone concerned, whether appointed or elected’. and the council seem to think that we should just rule a line under The association claims the EcoCare rates on the community are all this and move on, and that it would be tedious, embarrassing and unlawful and invalid, and that Kaipara District Council debt — at unhelpful to investigate what has happened and apportion blame. $60 million for the sewage scheme alone — has ‘reached the point The MRRA and a growing army of angry ratepayers do not share where the collapse of the district is inevitable unless urgent and that view. If it is not fixed now it will get much worse’. drastic action is taken’. “The depth of feeling in the community can be demonstrated by In a statement issued before the weekend’s meeting, the MRRA the fact that the MRRA membership has leapt from about 20 people said that ‘if we set aside the fact that council entered into a contract to somewhere in the region of 150 over the past few weeks,” said for $26.3 million (for the EcoCare scheme) after getting community Mr Rogan. ‘agreement’ to only $23 million, we get a total expenditure of $43.6 “On top of that, we are receiving donations of cash for the cause million gone up in smoke. ranging from $20 to $200.” What must then be added is the money that council has collected “Now the ball is firmly back in the Kaipara District Council’s from its ratepayers in annual and one time targeted charges, because court.” JX90 ROPS C/W Loader - 12 Forward 12 Reverse - Dry clutch - 90HP

Kids on Quads at open day The Dargaville Stock Car Club, in association with the Dargaville Motocross Club, is relaunching on November 6 for the summer series and they are hosting a special day for youth — ‘Kids on Quads’

“In back yards all over Dargaville, kids are going around and around in circles on their motor bikes and quads. If we can get them to come and play at the Dargaville Stock Club track then maybe we can get them interested in motocross,” says stock car committee member, Ross Hansen. “Our open day is November 6 and it thewill be a fun day for the kids on a flat track. If they really enjoy it, then we can take it further. “Admittedly, our track is flat and not that exciting. However, it will be a good track for novices and if they do okay they may want to try the motocross track. “For the meantime, our open day is a oneoff event but you never know what will happen if we get a good response. We’ll host the first event and see if it’s going to work, if not that’s

fine but if it is, then we might decide to have a monthly meeting that will run opposite to the motocross meets. “At the end of the day, the crowd is going to tell us what they want and after opening day, we will make a decision. “My grandson in Te Hana gave me the idea. He has a little motorbike and where does he race it? In the back yard! Also my neighbour‘s kids have a quad and motor bike and they race around my back yard!” says Ross. “The idea is, people — children — can try their hand at flat-track racing and if they enjoy it, they can carry on to motocross. In our motocross, there are no points — it’s just fun,” adds Aaron Fitness, who organises the motocross events. “Many of the kids are addicted straight away because there’s no pressure — we drop the flag, off they go and whoever gets the checkered flag, well good for them.” “Currently, a lot of kids are limited to their little quarter-acre section and it’s quite soul destroying to watch them going around and around, when they could be going up and down as well,” says Aaron. A market for men Labour Weekend is often a time to clean out the shed or the garage, and Paparoa’s Arty Farties community activity group is inviting men to take their unwanted goodies to market. “We have permission to use the old shearing sheds at the showgrounds for a Man’s Market, so the men will be slightly separated from the traditional market we hold on the old Paparoa bowling green nearby,” said spokesperson, Maureen Davis. “Men are invited to clean out that old stuff they are keeping in the garage or the basement, shed or wherever. The old car parts they have been keeping for years and don’t really need anymore, an old gearbox for a car long gone, Tools they no longer use, maybe golf clubs from days gone by, now that they no longer play. “Have a look in your garages guys… I bet it’s a real little treasure trove for somebody else. That car you would like to sell and update to a better, newer model, maybe a new one for your wife. Besides how many other people are looking for a new,(old) car, and how many really need a newer wheelbarrow, or some garden tools that are sitting about in somebody’s shed, an old lawnmower that has become redundant since you bought the new ride-on. I could go on forever but think about it. “We already have one guy very keen to sell a couple of cars and another who is going to clean out his barn soon as he can. We hope this spreads and we believe it will.” The showgrounds venue has been chosen because there is room for cars, trailers, boats — anything men want to bring along. “We really believe this will work and give the guys a chance to chin wag, talk about the rugby cup, share a memory about the day they took that old gearbox out,” Maureen added. Arty Farties is located at the old Paparoa Bowling club, Main Rd Paparoa. The Man’s Market will be held on Labour weekend Saturday 8am to noon. For more details: Ph 431 6655 or Ann Shanks 431 6229.

Mission without borders recruiting Nida Wyatt has overseen the Dargaville contingent of Operation Cover Up for more than a decade but says it is now time to step aside. The group is now keen to find a new co-ordinator and more volunteers to assist their efforts helping the poor and disadvantaged in Eastern Europe. Operation Cover Up is a large Mission Without Borders knitting project that involves hundreds of people throughout the country. Volunteers knit blankets and clothing, which is packaged up and sent to orphaned children and poor families in Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Moldova, Romania and Ukraine. “We’ve knitted thousands of blankets and other goods to send to orphanages and struggling families to countries where it freezes in the winter,” says Nida. “Locally we used to have about 20 volunteers — we would knit squares then have a working bee and sew them all together. However, not many people do it now and we only sent away about six blankets. “We are hoping that someone will want to take on the co-ordinator role — it’s not a very big job and just involves collecting the donated wool and some organising. I really enjoyed it but I’m well into my eighties now.” If people are interested in co-ordinating Operation Cover Up in Dargaville they should contact Nida on 09 439 8366.

Important Changes to the Health Shuttle Service Changes to the Health Shuttle service will be introduced during September. The Health Shuttle will focus on: 1. Helping the whole community (Ruawai North) access health services in Whangarei 2. Helping rural people access health services in Dargaville. For bookings phone Te Ha Oranga 439 3013.
What this means is: The Health Shuttle will no longer be collecting people within the Dargaville Township and taking them to appointments in Dargaville.
So if you live within the Dargaville Township area i.e. inside the 100km/hour speed limits, Ritches Town Service can help you, they have reduced their fares to $10 return trip, on their scheduled timetable route. YES they are able to collect you from your home if you ring 439 6306 and make a booking, it would be helpful to align your appointments within their scheduled bus route. Working together we hope to be able to meet the transport needs of our community.

This is a series of regular articles keeping you informed of happenings on our harbour today, and from bygone days — truly the ‘Jewel of the Kaipara’.
Stormy days at Kaipara Heads by Brian Eastwood When a newspaper reporter visited Kaipara Harbour in August 1883 he was impressed, and the scene at the Heads especially intrigued him. He told his readers of the Timaru Herald, ‘the Kaipara Bar is a grand sight on a stormy day. The large breakers that roll and tumble and chase each other to the shores of the North or South Spits look like invincible titans in battle. ‘The restless, turbulent foaming sea, with each wave lashing the other and exhausting its fury on the sand dunes which form the landward portion of the spit, or thundering against the immense hills, form everywhere the background to a grand picture. ‘These breakers have strength and fury and they let you know it. The vast height, to which they rise on a good stormy day, makes it certain ruin to any hapless ship driven on say, the Tory Shoal or North Spit. But it is to the light and baffling winds, for the most part, that the numerous wrecks are laid’. Denis Sheehan from Sheehan’s Creek had bought some of the
wrecks and listed them for the visitor. Sheehan noted the number of headlands and sandbanks from Pouto to North Spit that had been given their name from past shipwrecks. Lady Franklin Bank, Midge Rocks and Tory Shoal we still know well. Other ships that had already come to grief by then were James A. Stewart at North Spit, Malaine, Faronia — a barque of 350 tons, the schooners Strathnavar, Prairie and Lotus. Sheehan calculated that the lost vessels were worth maybe £650,000, a large amount of money in 1883. Northern Wairoa trader, sawmiller and Member of Parliament for Marsden, Edwin Mitchelson, were trying to arrange the buying of a tug for Kaipara. The newsman from Timaru wrote. ‘We know how valuable a powerful steam tug would be in towing vessels in and out. I think many wrecks would be prevented, many lives saved, much valuable time and money to owners and shippers conserved, possibly insurances reduced and trade greatly stimulated. She would soon repay herself when we consider that this is the third largest port in the colony. And Kaipara Lifestyler feature writer, Brian Eastwood, trade would be much in excess of pictured at Pouto — in the background is the entrance to the Kaipara Harbour and the infamous Kaipara bar what it is now if such a boat was stationed here’. just as big and the harbour entrance is still as ‘The Kaipara Bar is in some respects, the best wide, although probably with a changed seabed. in New Zealand. Reliving the ’40s Residents, staff and guests at Kauri Coast Rest Home enjoyed a day of 1940s fun and perhaps a little bit of reminiscing on Wednesday. The special day was organised by activities co-ordinator, Lorraine Steel, and involved a menu, outing and decorations that reflected the era of big bands, baby boomer births and social change. “Our residents really enjoy it when we do have special days and when someone suggested a 1940s theme, it sounded wonderful,” said assistant manager, Heather Himiona. Dargaville Museum contributed to the day, supplying mannequins in 1940s attire and the home was decorated with memorabilia. The activities started with a visit from the Vintage Car Club whose members took residents for a drive to Te Kopuru. It was enjoyed by all, despite the unfavourable weather, and the car club member stayed for lunch. Upon their return, residents were treated to 1940s pre-lunch drinks and nibbles, which included Pimms, beer and shandy and steak, kidney and mushroom savouries. Lunch was reflective of the day too with pickled pork, mushy peas, honeyed carrots, mashed potato and an apricot rolypoly dessert. Lou Pivac entertained guests on the piano. “They really enjoyed the whole day,” says Lorraine. “We try to do this once a month and our next themed day will be Melbourne Cup afternoon.”
Coast to coast art exhibition “There is some amazing work — it is a vibrant, colourful, excellent exhibition and includes some unusual work as well.” The Kauri Museum CEO, Bet Nelley, is almost in awe of some of the exhibits displayed in the Kaipara District Community Art Awards, which are now on show in the huge museum foyer space at Matakohe. “The foyer display of course means that people do not have to pass through the museum to see this exhibition, so there is no cover charge at all. It is our pleasure to host the display as our contribution to the community,” said Ms Nelley. There are five main categories of art on display — sculpture, photography, pottery and ceramics, other media including jewellery, flax, glass and wood, as well as painting. “There are 50 paintings included and the theme of the competition, and thus the exhibition

But there is amazing work everywhere you look.” The exhibition runs until November 17, when final judging will take place at a gala evening at the museum. The competition is sponsored by the Kaipara District Council in collaboration with arts associations in the district, as well as Brookfields Lawyers, Westmoreland Homes, Northland Waste Ltd, MPL, the Kaipara Lifestyler and the Kauri Museum. “We are thrilled to have it here and hope the public takes this opportunity to visit the event and to enjoy some fantastic art,” said Ms Nelley.

Rachel Dawick, is performing at the Dargaville Town Hall on Thursday, October 27, as part of her ‘Follow my Tears’ tour. The travelling artist, who uses songwriting, design, recording and performance to recreate stories, is cycling from Cape Reinga to the Bluff, raising funds for Christchurch Women’s Refuge. ‘Follow my Tears’ is named after a song written by Boo Hewerdine and Eddi Reader, who Rachel met in Scotland. They wrote a song during their trip to New Zealand about a woman immigrating to New Zealand with her family in 1947 and it sparked off Rachel’s journey, which is now in stage two. The journey saw Rachel touring New Zealand, collecting stories about women who lived in the 1800s through to World War 2, performing those stories and creating a double album. The first half of the album (stage one of the project) looks at characters from the 1800s, including fraudster, Amy Bock, and the second half of the album (stage two) looks at characters from 1893 to World War 2. In stage one, Rachel travelled by van but stage two will be more of an adventure as she will be cycling 2,700 kilometres, with the bike acting as an historic symbol of the growing independence of women throughout the world. She will again be collecting stories but is this time also raising money for the Christchurch Women’s Refuge. The summer months will be spent writing the songs and stories from stage two. If anyone has an interesting story about women who lived in the 1900s, they should contact the Dargaville Library. Rachel will perform a free show at the Dargaville Town Hall on Thursday, October 27, at 3.45pm.

A near capacity crowd packed into the Dargaville Town Hall to see the latest offering from BlackBox Theatre, Pack of Girls. The action packed show was met with hearty applause and laughter from a clearly impressed crowd. Pack of Girls tells the story of rugby widow, Pam Hooper, who wants to prove that girls can play rugby just as well as men. Increasingly fed up with her husband’s misguided dreams of sporting stardom, Pam sets about becoming a star herself. Pam organises a sevena-side, all-female rugby team and challenges the men on and off the field to change their assumptions. Tempers, insults and even fists fly amidst the action in the fast-paced

rbor Day will be observed throughout New Zealand tomorrow. Local celebrations were to consist of the planting by school children of macrocarpa trees around Selwyn Park, but owing to the bad weather the ceremony has been postponed. This would be an excellent way to observe Arbor Day if it were agreed that trees should be planted around the Park in such a way as to hide the interior from public view. If the Park is to be used as a sports ground when a ‘gate’ may be a consideration it is of course right that the arena is shut off from the view of people on the road.

New disability link Setting the stage for memorable events centre in Maungaturoto NorthAble Disability Services have established a Link Centre at Linking Hands in Maungaturoto and a wheelchair is now available for community use. The development is an exciting step forward for Maungaturoto. “We are proud to join forces with Linking Hands Maungaturoto, who offer a free Health Shuttle Service for anyone needing to get to health or well-being related appointments,” says NorthAble promotions co-ordinator, Maz Schlaf.
When the big names in entertainment — the likes of Pearl Jam, Tom Jones and the headliners of festivals such as Glastonbury and Donnington — need somewhere to perform, they don’t settle for second best. And for the last 12 years, if these top stars needed a stage built to the highest standards in Britain, they turned to a local Dargaville man to make sure the show went on.
Gavin from Orbit Stages is that man — a stage building rigger trained by the best in the world and with a formidable portfolio of achievements behind him.
NorthAble Disability Services now operating in Maungaturoto
“Linking Hands will take people to Warkworth, Whangarei and over to Ruawai — or anywhere in between. They also offer an internet, printing, laminating, copying service and the ‘Book Nook’, which has a selection of second-hand books on offer. “In addition to these services, NorthAble has also donated a wheelchair to Linking Hands for members of the community to borrow. The new service does not carry a charge, although a koha is appreciated for spare parts, upgrades and repairs to the wheelchair.” NorthAble is a charitable trust, which offers disability information and advisory services for Northland. “NorthAble is based in Whangarei but we also have a selection of equipment for sale in Dargaville. The range is available at the craftmarket at Dormavilla.” Linking Hands is a health shuttle service based in Maungaturoto and can be contacted on 09 431 8969 between 9am and 3pm weekdays. All phone messages will be responded to.

tradition, running a team of eight Shorthorn and Red Devon bullocks for the entertainment and education of crowds all over New Zealand. A century ago the might of these big, gentle animals was the driving force behind taming the wild, and historical records attest that hundreds of bullock teams — sometimes thirty strong — operated in the kauri forests of the Kaipara district, hauling logs the size of small buildings. With a docile nature and a whole lot of heart, these animals went where steam power could not, in a time before diesel and hydraulics transformed the forestry industry. Bullock teams, always led by the oldest and most experienced pair of animals, were used not only for transporting kauri, but also for laborious agricultural work. Ross Battensby still hitches up his bullocks to a restored Duncan plough to show folks how it’s done — they are an authentic working team who put in hours of work on his Ararua property. Of course these days it’s not all for the sake of the harvest — the Battensby bullock team is in hot demand for live shows such as the Northland Field Days, as well as television, promotional and cinematic work. Ross is self-taught, but his team can be traced back through a lineage of

working animals, and with a minimum of two years training each they respond to commands and work well as a unit. Working with a team of up to eight 1,100 kilogramme bullocks may seem daunting, but this partnership between pioneers and their teams was the cornerstone of our region’s development.
Ross and Glenn — along with Ross’s brotherin-law Cameron who manufactures yokes and working gear for the team — are proud to continue with this grand old tradition alongside their thoroughly modern contracting business — it’s a link to the rich history of the Kaipara and all of New Zealand.

Cutting the big jobs down to size for 40 years They say that experience counts on the big jobs, and there are few locals who know the truth of this adage better than Mr Don Dreadon. As a contractor specialising in bulldozer work, he’s been behind the blades of these powerful machines for over 40 years. Whether it’s building dams, levelling ground, undertaking quarrying or any number of other heavy duty tasks, Don and his hard-working machines have been there for more than four decades to cut the job down to size. As a young boy Don watched his father at work with a post-war bulldozer, clearing scrub and preparing land which is still profitably farmed to this day. At the age of eight he was behind the controls, and by the age of twelve he was accomplished enough to begin helping out in the family business on weekends and holidays, getting to know how to control such a large and powerful machine with precision. It’s a skill which like Don’s wealth of experience has built over time. And while new technology and more power have meant that modern bulldozers are able to undertake even bigger tasks, the most important tool in Mr Dreadon’s kit is his knowledge. That means a job done on budget and on time, with none of the hassles associated with hiring machinery and trying to start from square one. A dam, effluent pond or even just a level pad may seem like an easy build, but an insight into the local area and many successful past projects to draw upon are an invaluable resource. Don’s father had a saying which applies to operating heavy machinery — ‘After three weeks you know it all. After three months you realise you know nothing. After three years you can begin to call yourself an operator’. With many years of solid, dependable service behind him, Don Dreadon is more than qualified to call himself a bulldozing and earthmoving professional — all you need to do is call him for those jobs around your property which require more than just a bucket and spade!

Suzuki conquer with the DR 200 Trojan A good farm bike — on four wheels or two — needs to be tough. It’s a prerequisite for all the hard knocks, deep mud and big jobs which the average Kiwi farmer will ask of it. That’s why it pays to choose a machine that’s been tested and tested again by the rigours of time — a model with an off-road pedigree you can trust. Suzuki’s hard-as-nails DR200 series have been fitting the bill with regards to the above for a number of years now, with no sign of the iconic two-wheeler losing traction with our nation’s farmers. If any motorcycle can be said to have a lot of heart it’s the willing little 200cc machine which ticks all the boxes — whether it’s the big powerful headlamp up front, the tough, uncomplicated brake and clutch mechanisms with their protectors or a sturdy carry rack big enough for the dog to jump up on as you scoot between jobs, there’s just about everything you need on one of these machines and none of what you don’t. Added to this ‘Swiss army knife’ practicality is the bulletproof nature of the DR200’s little

199cc OHC four stroke and its low weight to high ground clearance ratio. All the power in the world won’t help an oversized bike in the kind of conditions we see on New Zealand farms in the winter, but the nimble DR is light enough with enough pulling power to tackle the mud and slush. The DR200 Trojan, Suzuki’s current model in the series, is a firm favourite around the country, and you’ll find one parked in many a shed locally as well. That’s because your local Suzuki dealership in Dargaville (that’s Randall’s just off the main street!) knows just how popular they are — come on in and take a look at what is perhaps the best little worker around the farm since the advent of the border collie.

Experience, expertise and laser precision It sounds like technology from the future, but laser drainage is definitely here today, helping the rural industry increase productivity by controlling the underground moisture of their fields. The laser aspect is all about precision, laying sub-surface pipes in narrow trenches to precisely control the water table. This refers to the underlying moisture of a piece of land, and in the Kaipara district our heavy clay soils can become easily waterlogged and hard to dry out. Although all plants need water to grow, a waterlogged paddock is less productive, and hence effective drainage is a good way to maximise your yield — and your profits. These unique conditions — a damp winter, heavy clay soil and a low-lying flat grade to the land — are a challenge to drain effectively, which is why it makes sense to get the job done by a local professional who has plenty of experience. In Dargaville, that means your first call should be to Driver Laser Drainage — a company which has been at the forefront of
drainage and water table management for the last two decades. Karl Driver heads up this successful local business, serving the rural community of the Kaipara with the best in machinery and expertise. With his help, farmers are able to undertake minimally invasive drainage projects with maximum results. Karl uses specially designed and built equipment to take the entire job from assessment to completion, and also specialises in the restoration, upgrading and repair of existing drainage systems to keep them working smoothly.

A dog’s tale . . .
Takin’ a serious drink . . . “I’m blimmin’ digustid wiv tha govermint.” Nah. Not the Boss this time. That’s Sharlene, ‘is skoolteacher girlfren’ and she’s real serious she reckins. Sharlene ana Boss were having a happy our out ona terrace by tha swimmin’ pool wot Boss has decided ta clean up fer summer. Trubble is wen he was giving it a scrub, he punktured the plastic linin’, an alla water leaked out. “Neva mind,” he reckined, “I got sum glue left over froma lino we put ina kitchin, so I’ll just stuck it up an I got tha hose in fillin’ ‘er up, eh Dog?” But I digress, as Sharlene went on. “Got no trubble enjoyin’ this shardonay here by the pool dear,” she tole the Boss. “Very pleasant. How’s yor beer?” Boss looked a bit puzzild. “It’s fine, just me normil.” “Yep,” went in Sharlene. “We are fine wiv our drinks, but downa skoolhouse, we had two young blokes on the mat in tha principil’s office. They hada bottil of wine down behind the bike sheds, but they got cort by a prefek.” Boss glanced at me an’ shrugged ‘is sholdas. “So, wot happind,” he askt Sharlene. “Well, kids ‘ave bin suspendered,” she sed. “But what I’m angry about isa ease wiv which they got the booze. Seems they sent an olda brother inta the likka shop wen they was in town shoppin’ an he was able ta get them each abottil of booze. The guvmint keeps on saying we gotta kontrol likker sales, special to young people. But wot are they doing about it. Bloody nothin’ rilly. Ya see some ads ona TV where young bloke’s is crashin’ kars,
an’ their maytes give ‘em a hard time about drinkin’ and drivin’. Then we see lotta pollitishins telling folk that booze is too cheep ina supermarkets. But wot rilly gets my goat?” (sometimes I wunder wot she means by that, ‘cos she’s already gotta goat tied up ona grass by tha driveway.) But she went on.
KEVIN REID CONTRACTING LTD
“They are not supposd to advertise booze ona TV. But you just look. Tha supermarkits are always ona about all their speshils. ‘This week we gotta speshils ona wine an’ beer, is wot the TV says. ‘We got tha lowest prices’. If that isn’t advertisin’ cheap booze an’ enkuraging people wiv not much munny to buy booze, then wot is it?” Sharlene gave a bit ofa snort, then Boss poured her another shardonay an’ he said, “here, hava nother snort dear. Ya probly quite right. I reckin’ tha govmint is just tryin’ ta keep us all a bit anethsitised, so we don’t make waves ova that ship wot sat ona reef fer four days, while they wondered wot ta do about it. An’ not wurry about tha werld cup costing us millions of dollas. Yeah. It’s alla plot ta keep tha IRB happy eh.” Well, Sharlene jus’ snorted agin. “Yes deah,” she sed in her angry voice. Then: “oh look deah, the pool’s empty again.” Then she sniggered and went ina house. Kennil time fer me I reckin. See ya. Billy
