Countless hours of volunteer effort, donated materials, and funds in the region of $30,000 have been transformed over Labour Weekend into a brand new wharf for Maungaturoto. In what’s reckoned to be a record, the wharf was begun last Friday, on site in Bickerstaff Road, on the banks of the Otamatea River, and due to be completed down to the finishing touches as The Lifestyler went to press on Monday evening. “It’s been a bit like climbing Everest,” said the chair of the Maungaturoto 150th committee, Albie Paton. “But you can now say, like Sir Ed: ‘we knocked the bastard off!’ Over the past year, as preparations for the 150th anniversary of the arrival of pioneers in the Albertland settlement of the Northern Kaipara, and the establishment of Maungaturoto, the town has been transformed, with the wharf project a key factor. The new structure replaces some worn and rickety stumps sticking up from the river, and the work required some extensive paperwork for permits and resource consents. It is linked to the town by a series of pathways, which will be the scene of a settlers’ landing re-enactment and parade next weekend. Much of the wharf was prefabricated at the Barnbuilder’s yard in Mountain Road, and the three-day construction phase was over-seen by local builder, Tim McGill. “Funds were successfully raised from many Kaipara businesses and individuals who ‘bought’ a plank, or a pile,” said Albie. “On Friday, we created a coffer dam to keep the tide at bay, with pumps to keep

the water seepage to a minimum, and the piles were rammed into place. Then over the next two days the sections of wharf proper were lifted into place using digger machinery. On Monday afternoon, it was all finally taking shape, with the balustrades going up. We had 12 skilled people working on site, and we attracted quite a few sightseers and supporters from the town. “Certainly, it is a fitting place for us to launch next weekend’s festivities, which are just about booked to capacity.

Waterways initiative seeks to bring in jobs and visitors The combining of several initiatives that aim to use Kaipara waterways to generate jobs and increase visitor numbers received an enthusiastic response at a meeting in Dargaville last week. Council acts on rates by Paul Campbell
The Kaipara District Council has taken action through the banking system to recover unpaid rates, some of them the result of a rates strike over the cost blowout of the Mangawhai wastewater scheme, and the subject of a Rates Validation Bill now before parliament. The Kaipara District Council (Validation of Rates & Other Matters) Bill got its first reading on June 12 and parliament’s Local Government and Environment Select Committee is due to report back on it by December. Meanwhile the Mangawhai Citizen’s and Ratepayers Association has recorded that one ratepayer has received a formal demand from his bank, threatening to take money from a family trust account. Mr Andrew Mackintosh has written to Westpac Bank over the demand, stating that the “KDC has acknowledged that all the rates demands it has made, including the ones relating to this property, are invalid and illegal”. The proof of this is that the council has asked parliament to retrospectively validate them all. I.e. the rates are not currently valid.

“Until and unless parliament does that there can be no doubt whatsoever, by the council’s own admission, that the rates they are demanding are not lawful.” However the council says it is confident that the rates for 2012/2013 and 2013/2014 have been lawfully set and payment of these is required. “Where the property that is the subject of a rates arrears is also mortgaged, the Local Government (Rating) Act 2002 allows councils to work with first mortgagees to recover rate arrears,” said community engagement manager, Barbara Ware. “Council is doing this where appropriate to do so. This is normal council practise throughout the local government sector.”

The Rotary Club of Dargaville is bringing the Ballet to town on Wednesday November 6 as part of its Tower Tutus on Tour programme in which it will make 47 performances across the country in a six-week period. Its performance in Dargaville will mark the Rotary club’s 75th anniversary, while the Royal New Zealand Ballet is celebrating 60 years this year. Rotary spokesman Brian Burnett says ticket sales have been steady. Premium tickets costing $25 for adults and $10 for children have sold out. But general tickets ($20 for adults and $5 for children) are still available. However, Mr Burnett says people should be quick as demand is strong. “If you delay, you risk missing out. “This new display takes data from trees outside the museum to a computer — generated screen inside,” says CEO Bet Nelley. “Dr Jonathan Palmer, who was scientist in residence here last year, and Dr David Drew from Tasmania have recently visited and placed dendrometers around two kauri trees growing at the back of the museum. “These young kauri are different species; one being the New Zealand Agathis australis and the other the Australian Agathis robusta. This new display will educate visitors about how wood grows and a graph, will show how the tree stem size, in

Visitors to the Kai Iwi Lakes this summer can expect a facility that will give them plenty of scope for outdoor recreational activities but with little cover from the summer sun. Three years ago pine trees surrounding the three lakes 35km north of Dargaville were chopped down, as falling branches were considered to create a health and safety hazard. While much of the area has been replanted, the new planting is in native species which are slower growing. Maungaturoto 150 Years The time to celebrate arrives by Paul Campbell
“Its taken a lot of hard work by a lot of dedicated people, but now the time has arrived, and it’s quite simply — time to celebrate.” Chair of the Maungaturoto 150th committee, Albie Paton, has been busy putting the vital finishing touches to next weekend’s programme saluting the Albertland settlers who founded the town. They came ashore after a trip along the river from Kaiwaka, at the end of a long journey around the world from England, and prior to embarking there, from many other points of the compass. “It has been a huge programme of work, all undertaken by our dedicated
community and I take my hat off to everyone,” said Albie. The most visible work to herald the 150th was perhaps the $750,000 remake of the main thoroughfare, with the New Zealand Transport agency coming to the party as its contribution to the event. The works were scheduled, but the agency admits it considered the anniversary date in timing its arrival on site. The wharf area includes reclaimed land, a boat ramp and walkways to make it a future waterside picnic and fishing spot. Registrations for the 150th will begin at 3pm on Friday, followed by a ‘meet and greet’ at the Maungaturoto Centennial Hall and the opening of a time capsule from the town’s 1963 centenary. On Saturday, at 10.30am, there will be a settlers’ landing re-enactment and a powhiri at the landing site in Bickerstaffe Road followed by a parade ‘through the ages’ to the Maungaturoto Country Club. Old time sports and entertainment will occupy the afternoon, followed by a celebration dinner at the centennial hall. On Sunday there will be an interdenominational church service and the dedication of a memorial. Throughout the weekend, there will be performances of a play written for the event, produced by the Otamatea Repertory Theatre, and history trails, with visitors guided around the district.

Maungaturoto 150 Years ORT produces ‘Scandalous’ play It is very fitting that Otamatea Repertory Theatre should celebrate the Maungaturoto 150th by producing an historic play — ‘The Scandalous Maungaturoto Hotel Licencing Affair’. And it is equally fitting that Peter Flower, who is the great-grandson of one of the key players in this story, Harold Flower, should write and direct this play. The ‘Scandalous’ play is an historical and factually true story of the building of the Maungaturoto Hotel, set in 1902, and the facts behind the granting of the liquor licence, reflecting the nature of the community and the country as a whole, at that time. That the hotel licence was imposed on the people of Maungaturoto, against the majority’s wishes, was indeed
scandalous at the time and made national headlines. Hours of research have been spent — reading through old documents and reports — to create this dramatised ‘documentarystyle’ work, for our enjoyment, and to pay tribute to the tenacity of the early settlers who helped make Maungaturoto such a fine community. Four performances only — October 31 at 7.30pm, Nov 1 at 8pm, Nov 2 at 2pm and Nov 3 at 2pm. transferring it by barge up the Manukau Harbour — where it nearly sank in rough weather. The pub was put on a train and sent to Helensville, where it was again set afloat, this time on a cattle barge towed by a tug. This, too, proved a fraught endeavour, as the barge nearly capsized, and the hotel looked doomed. With time running out some enterprising builders rushed up to the site, erected the front door of the hotel, nailed the licence to the boards and declared the premises open. This was enough for the magistrate — and to this day, the Maungaturoto Hotel remains the heart of the town, with good food and cold drink for all.

Maungaturoto 150 Years A starring role for Hayden Appearing in amateur dramatics for the Otamatea Repertory Theatre as a teenager in Maungaturoto proved to be a springboard into international show business. Hayden Tee has now landed the role of Inspector Javert in a Melbourne production of Les Miserables. New names take on the Mountain by Andy Bryenton
This year’s battle of the V8s on the ‘sacred tarmac’ of Bathurst came down to the classic showdown of Ford versus Holden, despite the inclusion of new names Erebus Racing (Mercedes Benz) and Nissan. Ford, too have changes on the horizon, as the run of the beloved Falcon badge comes to an end. More wins like that delivered by Mark Winterbottom this year will see the Aussie icon off in style, but what will replace it on the track? Rumours abound that a specially prepped Mustang is waiting in the wings — thought the fact that the Mustang is a two-door in its current format might mean a change of rules is needed. Certainly, the design of the current crop of cars adheres to tight guidelines, a fact which has led to some race fans wondering exactly which of the sleek, Bathurst’s Ford versus Holden years are over — but what will the future bring?
But the up-and-comers challenging the legendary red and blue rivalry on Mount Panorama may very well hit their stride next year, with a wealth of technical data gleaned from running against the well established Ford and Holden teams. Certainly, Mercedes will be looking to up their game — the German marque have been monstering motorsport events since the days when they took on Auto Union speedsters in the 1930s. And Nissan’s spirited attempt to recapture the glory of their ‘Godzilla’ victories with the powerful new Altima
was only cut short by a tragic kangaroo strike — not something any racer can plan for. Next year both teams will have the benefit of many races under their belts, and another returning brand nipping up behind them. Volvo return to the hallowed ground of the Mountain after a more than 20-year hiatus. In 1986 Kiwi driver Robbie Francevic won the Aussie touring car series in a Volvo — now the Scandinavian automakers have put together something much more potent than the old 240T to re-enter the big leagues.

More helpers Top Dargaville student gets a big helping hand needed at museum by Colin Patterson
Dargaville High student Andrew McLaren’s plans to study engineering next year just got a whole lot easier.
One of Dargaville’s leading visitor attractions is putting out a call for people to lend a hand.
Andrew has been awarded an Auckland University scholarship that will pay all his compulsory course fees for three years and provide $5,000 a year for non-course costs over the same period. He and his family got the good news a week ago. “They’re pretty stoked.” The scholarship will make his tertiary study easier, as he will be able to focus on his studies rather than his finances. “It’ll mean, if I’m careful, I won’t need to get a part-time job. I’ll be able to put more time into my study.” He says the scholarship is especially helpful with housing in Auckland being so expensive. “I’ll be staying at O’Rourke Hall. That’ll come $13,500 for two semesters.” Andrew is Head Boy at Dargaville High and represented Kaipara in the Rishworth Cup public speaking competition. He says he wants to study at Auckland University because “It’s the highest ranked university in New Zealand and it’s got a really good engineering programme.” The course for a Bachelor of Engineering lasts four years. He is unsure whether he will return to Dargaville once he graduates. “I’ve got no idea. I haven’t thought that far ahead. I suppose I’ll go wherever I can get a job.” Andrew chose engineering because ‘it’s just something I do’.
Dargaville Museum has operated from Harding Park since 1985, although it was set up in the 1950s. Museum manager Penny McKenzie is the museum’s sole employee. But there are a group of about 50 volunteers who perform a huge range of tasks, from staffing the front desk to restoring exhibits, building them and cleaning. “We couldn’t survive without volunteers,” says Ms McKenzie. The museum is open from 9am to 4pm in winter and 9am to 5pm in summer. Volunteers usually work a shift in the morning or one in the afternoon. While it can help to have skills such as carpentry, building or customer service, that is not essential. “Volunteers need to have an interest in the community.” Ms McKenzie says volunteers get to meet people from many countries and regions. And while there is a loyal cadre of volunteers, Ms McKenzie says there is always room for more. “People get busy or sick. And we always need people, especially at weekends.
