Collaboration and climate change u by Paul Campbell

The new Kaipara District Council has been sworn in with Mayor Jason Smith highlighting “collaborations and partnerships” as well as awareness of climate change in an address to the community at a town hall powhiri last Friday.

“For Kaipara District Council in the term ahead you should expect to see strengthening relationships with our iwi partners and neighbouring councils,” he said. “The increasing strength of these relationships is evidenced in the fact we’ve all shared a powhiri this morning with our key iwi partners from Te Uri o Hau, Te Roroa, Te Kuihi, Te Parawhau and Ngati Whatua. “We’re also making real progress with our neighbouring councils, and it’s especially delightful to be graced with the presence of Her Worship the Mayor of Whangarei Sheryl Mai. I’d also like to acknowledge Matt King MP for Northland who’s joined us.” Dr Smith said it is Kaipara’s turn to lead both the Northland Mayoral Forum and also chair meetings of Local

Government New Zealand’s Zone 1/ Northland, which are the combined meetings of all the councillors of the four councils of the north. “Our Kaipara voice is growing stronger, and then, to top it off, Northland Regional Council is planning to build a new $8m office building for themselves and us. Everyone else is starting to work out we’re an attractive place to be, and Kaipara District has the fastest-growing population of any North Island district in the last six years, at 20.6% growth. That means one in every five people in Kaipara today has arrived in the last six years. This is a quiet revolution bringing new citizens, new residents, new energy, investments and ideas — Kaipara’s back in business. Where once its debt levels were truly horrible, after a time of austerity, council debt is

now significantly reduced and Kaipara finds itself safely in the middle of the pack of councils for debt per capita — ranked something like number 35 of 67 territorial councils across New Zealand. “As a council, we’ll be working hard to shape the future of the Kaipara, which is already growing fast, particularly in the east. We’ll continually criss-cross the district, encouraging cross-pollination of energy and ideas, bringing the east to the west and vice-versa, and gaining strength as we go.” Dr Smith addressed climate change saying “things out there are getting more complicated, and the media presents once far-away problems of climate change, sea-level rise and global warming for us to tackle. continued on page 3 …

p Ruawai College students showcased an array of talent at their performance of Heavenly Bodies last week. “The story was about young love, life and death with Harmony Day, Tiakina Taufonua and Tyana Fenney playing the angels in the show,” said principal’s PA Hazel Hornell. “The production was a hit with parents and members of the community that came along. Many said it was beautiful and that it made you laugh and cry all at once. We have a lot of potential young talent coming through the school, and they worked extremely hard and excelled themselves to make the show the success it was.”

KDC candidate seeks vote recount u by Paul Campbell

Excluded in the local body elections for a seat on the Kaipara District Council after the counting of special votes saw him overtaken, Dargaville Ward candidate, Brian McEwing, is seeking a recount in an application to the Whangarei District Court.

p The new council were greeted by a delegation of Kaumatua, Kuia and leaders of local Iwi groups who opened proceedings with a powhiri and karakia; many councillors swore their oath in Te Reo Maori as well as English

“Kaipara people are practical, nononsense people who don’t do hysteria, and with that attitude in mind I reckon we should just get on with the job of being ‘Climate-smart Kaipara’, which means that we’re a place that’s using the best smart technologies and innovations combined with local common sense to make our way forward. “Climate-smart Kaipara may include waste minimisation strategies, plastic recycling, water storage projects, regenerative agriculture where farmers use the many thousands of hectares of Kaipara pasture land as a carbon sink,

new tropical kinds of crops or animals, world-class drainage engineering or a council that’s consciously reducing its carbon footprint. “I propose we start gathering these sorts of ideas now for the Climate-smart Kaipara we need to become and ask everyone in the community to start thinking about what we can do here. “Good governance and decisionmaking by your council mean as we go we’ll be watching closely the social, cultural, economic and environmental wellbeing of our people and this place.” ¢

Mr McEwing was at first successful by two votes when the preliminary results were declared, ahead of fellow ward candidate, Karen Joyce Paki, but the counting of special votes gave Ms Paki a 3.6 per cent lead and the council seat. “I am not breaking my neck to take a council seat off Karen,” said Mr McEwing, “it’s just that people have approached and persuaded me (to ask for a recount) and offered to donate funding to do so.” The recount through the court costs $750 plus $200 in costs. However, whether or not a recount

goes ahead is at a judge’s discretion. “The judge could still throw it out,” Mr McEwing added. He said grounds for the application covered the fact that informal votes, which were not counted, coupled with a perceived human error margin of .25 per cent could change the result. The road to a recount has not been easy, as an application had to be filed within three days. Mr McEwing said he approached the electoral office, the District Court in Auckland and then the court in Whangarei under the guidance of a lawyer. No date has been set for the court hearing.

KAIPARA LIFESTYLER

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Sir, I refer to your front-page story in Kaipara Lifestyler: ‘A significant Kaipara homecoming’. The story does a great job in explaining the origins of the collection assembled by Andrew Rintoul, possibly the first member of the Albertlander settlement scheme to set foot at Matakohe more than 150 years ago. We had a hugely significant day for The Kauri Museum, and it was entirely appropriate that the ceremony of the day was in accordance with Maori tikanga, as these are indeed Maori taonga.

Mr Rintoul travelled far and wide in his quest to add to his collection of artefacts, which he no doubt found to be of artistic merit and cultural significance. These stories will be of interest not just to the people of Te Uri o Hau and the Rintoul family but much further afield. It will help us to better understand how the relationships between the tangata whenua and the new settlers evolved and developed. It supports The Kauri Museum’s purpose as guardians of the kauri story, past, present and future. It pleases me to know that all the Rintoul collections, both gum and Maori taonga, are now finally home together at The Kauri Museum. Mark Vincent Chairperson Otamatea and Kauri Museum Board

Send love this holiday season u by Andy Bryenton

Dargaville Library is joining in a nationwide campaign to send a message of love and community to those who would otherwise be lonely for Christmas. Librarian Jillaine Murray has taken charge of this year’s Sending Love project, in which members of the public, from kids to adults, are encouraged to come in and write holiday message of hope and friendship to a complete stranger. These will be collected and sent off to those who might otherwise not be part of Christmas festivities; those in rest homes and hospitals, people with no family in New Zealand and the socially isolated. “It’s a wonderful idea. Last year the local schools were very involved,” says Jillaine. “We received so many cards, which were passed on to Sending Love and redistributed to where they made a difference to people.” As programme organisers Sending Love NZ put it: “Sending Love is about people and communities coming together to make a festive gesture towards another person who may experience loneliness over Christmas. It is one person putting love and thought into a card, to pass a smile and a sense of feeling remembered and loved on to another person.”

The Christmas-wrapped letterbox is already up and assembled in the Dargaville Library, who have cards to give out for free to those who want to spread some cheer. It’s grading season! If you live on an unsealed road, you might see our graders out and about at this time of year. We grade our unsealed roads only at certain times of year, because conditions need to be right. For the best results, the roads need to be damp but not waterlogged. In damp conditions, grading works well to compact the road into a dense surface, restoring its shape. This makes spring and autumn ideal seasons for grading. We avoid grading in winter where possible because the roads are usually too wet and it creates slushy conditions that are unsafe for motorists and take a long time to dry out. Grading in mid-summer is also avoided, because cutting into a hard dry surface leaves a layer of loose material that turns into dust and can get blown away or cause a nuisance for motorists. In addition, corrugations reappear more easily on dry, loose surfaces, which makes grading dry roads counter-productive. The water restrictions that are usually in place over summer mean contractors can’t easily dampen the road to mimic suitable grading conditions. Kaipara has over 1,100 kilometres of unsealed roads, and Council contractors inspect them regularly to identify and repair wear and tear issues such as potholes and corrugation. If you see an unsealed road that needs attention, please call Council on 0800 727 059 or email council@kaipara.govt.nz.

Gold on the grill u by Andy Bryenton

Mangawhai Meat Shop’s Dan Klink has another trophy to add to his already overflowing cabinet, with a gold medal win in the search for New Zealand’s best sausage 2019. Results were announced at an awards dinner in Auckland last week, with the long-established Mangawhai butchery taking home a gold medal for their Beef and Bean Mad Mex sausage, in the Flexitarian category. This new category blends meat with veggies to create a sausage that’s got the best of both worlds in terms of flavour and nutrition. The competition was tough, with sausage makers from all over the nation throwing their best on the grill. “The top sausage is an extraordinarily delicious, full-bodied, savoury sausage that had all the judges fighting for more, but all were in total agreement that this was the winning banger,” says food writer p and judge Annabelle White. “Even after all the judging we asked for more to be cooked, think perfectly flavoured; it’s all about the meat, perfectly textured with great use of seasoning that has an unforgettable, luscious aftertaste. It’s made me banger obsessed and congrats to the creators,” says White. Dan and the Mangawhai Meat Shop were just pipped for the top award

Upgrade plan for SH12 A battered stretch of State Highway 12 at Naumai, some four kilometres out of Tokatoka, is to get a major facelift over summer from the New Zealand Transport Agency — work, which is expected to involve traffic delays at the site. Subsidence over time has left an uneven road surface constantly requiring patching work, but now the 1.5-kilometre stretch is to be ‘refurbished’ according to NZTA’s Northland systems manager, Jacqui Hori-Hoult. “The work is expected to take three or four weeks and start around February or March, with the details still in the planning stage, but it will be a reconstruction and resurfacing.”

Dan is no stranger to DEVRO Great NZ Sausage Competition Gold. In 2016 he won the supreme award for another of his tasty creations

of the night, which was taken out by Auckland’s Westmere Butchery, serving up a Chicken, Leek and Bacon entry. This sizzler of an award comes hard on the heels of both Dan and his young apprentice Dylan taking top honours at the Alto Butcher and ANZCO Foods Butcher Apprentice of the Year competition regionals for Northland. ¢

Ms Hori-Hault said core samples. Known as test pits have been taken over the projected work area to check substrate and geology, which will determine the remedial work. “So we are still in the design stages and will know more after Christmas.” The work is an on-going upgrade for Kaipara arterial road, following the $30 million Matakohe deviation and bridges completed last summer.

Sounding of the bells u by Andy Bryenton

New York-based accordion virtuoso and Dargaville favourite Kevin Friedrich has confirmed that he’s stopping off in town for Christmas this year, leading the bill for a festive concert event, which will benefit Dargaville Museum. It’s not too long now until the season when sleigh bells and carols are at the forefront of everyone’s minds, but for those helping Kevin put together this ‘Jingle all the Way’ holiday extravaganza, practice is already underway. Museum spokesperson Margaret Tier says that Mr Friedrich will be accompanied by Auckland’s Music Makers accordion orchestra, the Kaipara Ukulele Orchestra, the Whangarei Handbell Choir, Alanah and Maurice Jones, vocalists Lionel Reekie, Wendy Dunn and Jone Yelcich, and Dargaville’s own Rivertown and Take 6 Singers. “There will be something for everyone, all the old-time favourites and special p Kevin Friedrich is coming to Dargaville to spread some festive cheer with a concert that’s packed with appearances by several of the seasonal favourites most famous characters of the season, including a big reindeer with a Tickets are on sale now at the red nose, a dancing snowman and of museum and include a complimentary course, the ‘big fellow in red’ himself. afternoon tea; adults $25 children We look forward to presenting a $10, with all proceeds donated to the wonderful variety show for all ages, Dargaville Museum, enabling them bringing the community together to continue their work preserving our for an afternoon of music and friendship.” local history. ¢

p Dargaville’s cinema trust members farewell guiding founder Jacoba Puharich

Jacoba Puharich has stepped down as a trustee, leaving the DCCCT ‘to the charge of an excellent group of people’. Trying to get a cinema back in Dargaville had been on Jacoba’s agenda since the late 1980s, says cinema spokesperson Karen Jones. In July 2013, after fantastic public support, successful trial movies at the Kumara Box, and hours and hours of voluntary work from Denis Honore, Cherry and Grant Waldron, Colin White,

John Fickling, Graeme, Jacoba and many others, Jacoba cut the ribbon to open the wonderful ANZAC Theatre officially. Now it has come time for Jacoba to take a bow and leave the cinema in new hands, just as the ANZAC Theatre prepares to host another year’s Short Film Competition on November 3. “It’s hard to imagine Dargaville now without its cinema. So a very big thank you to Jacoba and all of those who have made this possible.” ¢

New players take the stage

Supporting racing talent u by Andy Bryenton

A new theatre company has formed in Mangawhai, and rather than taking ‘baby steps’ toward a significant performance, their first work, slated for this November, is the multi-layered Under Milk Wood by acclaimed poet and writer Dylan Thomas.

p The brand new Mangawhai Players get to work on their very first production, Under Milk Wood by Dylan Thomas

The players in this community theatre company come from all walks of life, and some travel a fair distance to weekend practice sessions for the love of theatre. As the spokespeople of the Mangawhai Players, Jo Lewin and Susan Dugdale put it: “We offer people opportunities to come together as a team, to share the pleasure and experience of creating collaborative artistic work. It’s fun. Our diverse skills, talents and ages merge to form a truly unique and dynamic bunch of players.” Those skills are being put to the test by Dylan Thomas’ 1954 masterpiece Under Milk Wood, which uses clever

narrative techniques to get into the heads, hearts and secret desires of the little Welsh town of Llareggub (that’s ‘bugger all’ backwards). Susan says that her background with Thomas’ work (she has taught it to students as an English literature and drama teacher, and directed it twice) made it familiar rather than daunting to take on such a beloved classic. Rehearsals are proceeding apace for the new company, who invite fresh faces to come and join in the fun. To find out more, please call either Jo Lewin: 021 737 561 or Susan Dugdale: 027 282 2252. ¢

A local real estate professional has thrown his support behind a young sportsman’s mission to conquer the world’s racetracks. Gary Morris of First National Roper and Jones says that supporting big achievers in the community is a great way to give back. Following teen racing driver Ben Morrison’s very successful ‘rookie of the year’ performance in 2018/19, Gary took the opportunity to help. A recent open day during which locals could come and see the car and driver that are on their way up the championship tables provided a chance to publicise Ben’s eventual goal; to race in the USA. It was also a chance for some prizes and fun, with three lucky attendees taking home special gifts courtesy of Gary and First National’s support. Art awards in Dargaville

Standing for service u by John Blackwell

The Kaipara Art Awards Exhibition, including works by this year’s highly acclaimed winning artists across a multitude of media, is coming to Dargaville this week.

A life and times in the Kaipara have placed me in a good position to continue my community service to this vibrant community, and I am now standing for election to the Northpower Board of Trustees.

Following the awards ceremony in Mangawhai two weeks ago, the 2019 Kaipara Art Awards Exhibition opens at The Muddy Waters Gallery, 43 Hokianga Road, on Friday evening and runs for almost four weeks. This year a record number of 66 entries across four categories, plus an emerging artist section, saw intense competition for a range of prizes. Judge Dr Carole Shepheard ONZM, retired Professor of Fine Arts at the University of Auckland, commented: “The best works are when there is a relationship between subject and execution and format and maker.” She was also pleased to see many works with a “social conscience”. Dargaville artist Carlyn Condon, who won second prize for her mixed media work Serenity, said “The message I want to portray is that we humans need to be more accountable for our actions and the effects those actions are having on our environment. This woman [Serenity’s subject] acts as the guardian of the whales in their clean habitat providing a sense of serenity to both the woman and the whales.” The public is invited to influence the People’s Choice Award by voting for their favourite work during the next month at The Muddy Waters Gallery. The People’s Choice Award will be

I have served on the Northland Beef Council as chair and as chairman of the combined Sheep and Beef Council — then Beef and Lamb for a total of 15 years. Both the organisers and judges of this year’s awards agreed with the sentiments professed by Mayor Jason Smith at the opening of the exhibition in Mangawhai, when he praised the level of skill on display, saying “Art is one of the things, which brings us all together in this wonderful place, and this year we have seen a step up.”

Lights on for family fun Protecting your interest u by Andy Bryenton

u by Gordon Lambeth

Each year Dargaville’s Lighthouse church provide an alternative to Halloween for local kids and their families. Their Light Party is a chance to dress up, enjoy games, prizes and plenty of sweets, but all in a safe and positive environment.

Being a sixth generation Northlander from a farming background, my passion runs deep for the province. The family Hereford Stud farm in Tangiteroria has been there for well over 50 years.

Co-organiser of this year’s event, Marion McEwing, says that the inspiration for this year’s costume theme came from one of the most beloved series of children’s movies of all time. The A Toy’s Story theme allows plenty of scope for kids to dress up in costumes depicting their favourite toys, either from the well-known franchise or from their own collections. “The only guidelines when designing a costume are nothing scary, (this is, after all, the opposite of Halloween, so think bright and fun instead of dark and creepy), and let your imagination run wild!” The volunteers putting together this event, which takes place on Thursday, October 31 from 6pm, have gone out of their way to top the decorations and games of previous years, all of which have been very successful with their young audiences. A stand out this year is the candy maze, but opportunities to enjoy some sweets and treats will be plentiful. There will also be prizes for the best-dressed toy-themed guests. The Lighthouse Church and Cool Bananas are the proud

For 27 years I served as a sworn officer in the New Zealand Police, and the last 20 serving the community of the Northern Wairoa. After finishing in a supervisory role, I turned my part-time business into a thriving architectural design practice. I have been one of the trustees involved in the construction and funding of the community pool. It was an interesting and challenging time from the failed council through the period of governance with the commissioners and back to elected members. For more than 20 years, I was involved with the DARE organisation (Drug and Alcohol Resistance Education) programme to guide young members of our community through problems with drug education and awareness. I will work hard to represent the Kaipara as I currently do with the Northland Automobile Association and the District Licensing Committee. I am the vice president of the Northland Property Investors Association. My role as a designer involves designing houses for clients — turning their dreams into reality while

sponsors of this event, ensuring that entry for kids ages 5 to 12 is by an affordable gold coin koha. Parents who are interested can call Marion for more information on 027 459 4518. ¢

Welcome to Mangawhai Big weekend for new station u by Andy Bryenton

It’s been a project a long time in completion, but this week will see the official opening of Mangawhai’s new fire station, a home for the volunteer brigade who serve the east coast community. With the foundations poured and concreted in April, the timber framing coming together in May, and finishing touches completed in the past month, the new station forms part of the emergency services ‘core’, which has taken shape next to the Mangawhai Activity Zone. St John Ambulance services are already on-site on Molesworth Drive. The build has been undertaken by Fire and Emergency New Zealand, with well-appreciated additional fundraising efforts from the local public, reflected in the opening schedule. Mangawhai Volunteer Fire Brigade’s chief fire officer Rob Leslie shared the itinerary with the public, noting that there are three distinct events as part of the historic roll-out. The first will be a Fire and Emergency New Zealand function

on October 31, for Brigade members and guests. The next day will be dedicated to the kind members of the public who contributed to the Friends of the Brigade’s innovative ‘Fire Brick’ appeal, buying bricks to construct a feature wall for the station that will record their contribution for posterity. That will occur on Saturday, November 2, and acknowledge all those organisations and individuals who pitched in. On Sunday, November 3 the brigade is inviting the public to attend a barbecue and open day from midday onward. Special thanks go out from all those under the protection of the Mangawhai Volunteer Fire Brigade to those who have made this new construction possible;

SUPPORTING MEN’S HEALTH

Supporting men’s health In Kaipara, across New Zealand and around the planet, the month of November has a new name, Movember, to raise awareness that fathers, partners, brothers and friends face a health crisis that isn’t being talked about. The Movember charity movement says ‘men are dying too young. We can’t afford to stay silent — that’s why we’re taking action. We’re the only charity tackling men’s health on a global scale, year-round.’ The most visible sign of participation in Movember is simply (for men anyway) growing a moustache as a walking talking billboard supporting the charity addressing some of the biggest health issues faced by men: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health and suicide prevention. The movement is independent of government funding, so can challenge the status quo and invest quicker in what works. In 13 years Movember has funded more than 1,200 men’s health projects around the world, and it has a target date 2030 to reduce the number of men dying prematurely by 25%. While there’s a passive investment in growing a moustache, supporting men’s health can also be active with what’s known as the MOVE challenge —

a 30-day physical fitness challenge by running or walking 60 kilometres during the month. Hit it fast. Take it slow. Run solo. Join a team. Go outside. Call on friends and family to back you with a donation. Set yourself a challenge that tests your limits, whether it’s a mountain to climb, learning to swim or running a race in costume. Movember works with global men’s health partners and academic and clinical institutions to accelerate improvements to some of the biggest health issues faced by men and funding more than 1,000 projects. Since the movement was founded in 2003, Movember has won support from more than five million people. Any form of activity can be a fundraiser in Movember. Make sure friends, family and colleagues know about the challenge you’ve set yourself. You’ll be surprised by who’ll chip in with a donation. Then keep the updates coming — as you progress towards

your goal, you’ll inspire more people. Don’t run the risk of getting worn out mid-month. Keep things moving with a little creativity. Get a team together to motivate each other. Plan a workplace training session — a great chance to

ask for donations. Let your supporters set you bonus challenges in return for cash. Organise an event to get more people moving. A good time is a great Movember motivation. ¢

SUPPORTING MEN’S HEALTH

Gentlemen hit the highway u by Andy Bryenton

It was an odd inspiration; back in 2012, Australian bloke Mark Hawwa spotted a promotional picture of actor John Hamm on a classic motorbike. The Mad Men star was dressed as his famous character Don Draper, complete with a sharp business suit, and Mark thought that the combination of clothes and motorcycle was both quirky and incongruous. This year, gentlemen in more than 100 nations put on their riding goggles, leathers and tweeds, waxed their moustaches and fired up a legion of classic motorbikes for the 2019 Distinguished Gentlemen’s Ride, raising money for Movember international. It’s all thanks to Mark asking his Australian mates to get dressed up as dapper cycling gents to help the local campaign — this year 700 cities took part, including the main centres in New Zealand. The idea is to dress like the gentleman bikers of yesteryear. There’s much evidence of handlebar mos, tweed plus-fours, sock suspenders, ‘Biggles’

aviator goggles and fleece-lined leather pilot’s jackets. Moreover, the other big push is to get sponsored, giving money to the appeal for men’s physical and mental health. This time around 15,324 riders got their bikes out for the event in the USA, while seven represented the cause on tiny Christmas Island. Close to 1,500 hit the streets in New Zealand. The international ride took place on September 29, outside of the month of Movember, but continuing its good work. You’ll see Movember-themed gentlemen motorcyclists doing similar things during this month as well, while the US$5.8 million raised worldwide are already at work in men’s mental health programmes and anti-cancer research. Getting together with mates for a ride, cruise or road trip is a great way to raise a donation for the appeal. Visit nz.movember.com to find out more about how you can contribute. ¢

QUAD BIKE SAFETY

Drones are everywhere, from law enforcement to motorsport to hovering over the Rugby World Cup to catch that perfect angle on a try. There’s one aspect of these handy flying ‘robots’ that really stands out — their usefulness in fishing! Mike from the team at Nola Sports in Dargaville, will be putting together a special drone fishing demonstration day down on Ripiro Beach. He will have the experts from Splashdrone on-hand to give you a first-hand demonstration of how Splashdrone can and will increase your catch-rate while on the beach. The Splashdrone will carry up to ten baits at a time, and given that it flies in the air, it doesn’t matter what the sea conditions are. Rough water makes no difference, which is a major advantage in our rugged west coast beach environment. Another great aspect of the Splashdrone is how quickly it can get your bait out. It literally takes only minutes, and once it drops your line, you simply hit ‘return to home’ on the remote control. The drone will fly itself back to the beach and land, without any assistance! That means no need to be a pilot to get the most out of this easy to use and versatile machine. Using the onboard camera, you can even see where you are

Power to save lives

19

AUTOS

u by Andy Bryenton

The Northland Rescue Helicopter Trust trust in their aircraft to do more than just keep their pilots and crew safe in the sky. They deliberately fly into situations, which may prove dangerous in order to save the lives of others. That calls for a special breed of machine, and the Sikorsky S-76A delivers. As Dargaville prepares to raise vital funds for the rescue choppers, with a gala breakfast hosted by Dargaville Ford on Thursday, November 14 it’s a good time to look at the power and capabilities of the machines that make all those lifesaving flights — hundreds a year for each helicopter possible. The Sikorsky S-76A was developed in the United States by the same people who designed the famous military Black Hawk chopper and the Comanche prototype. It was the first Sikorsky designed for civilian use over military applications, and from early on its potential as a medical evacuation and search and rescue platform was noted. Crewed by two highly trained operators, the S-76A shattered records for range, rate of climb, altitude and flat out speed. That was back in 1982 at the very start of its lifespan; S-76A models were built right up until 2005 and support for these popular machines is still readily available, as variants are still rolling off the factory line. Part of the secret of the Sikorsky’s success lies in its twin 650 horsepower Rolls Royce Allison turboshaft engines.

A single one of these colossal power plants was built into a motorcycle for collector and screen personality Jay Leno, creating the speediest two-wheeler on earth. In the rescue choppers, these motors allow a cruising speed approaching 300 km/h, getting the sick and injured to a hospital fast. Operating

and maintaining a fleet of these precision machines with their massive power and speed is not cheap, however. To start with a single example will cost more than US$13 million. The Northland Rescue Helicopter Trust relies on the help of the community to keep these mighty choppers in the

air, ready to deploy all 1,300hp when disaster strikes. Those who have needed their help all agree; without the S-76As flying out of Whangarei, we would all be worse off. Come along and support the team who deploy this power where it’s needed most on November 14 in Dargaville! ¢
