p The Kaipara Harbour entrance to the Port Albert channel is greeted with this colourful display as this keen fisherman heads out to sea with the hopes of catching a big one. This spectacular natural show was captured after a supermoon and on a king tide. A supermoon occurs when a full moon is at its closest point to the earth. This often coincides with higher than usual tides.

New Zealand has farewelled another leading light of the arts world with the death of Kaipara painter Bev Taylor, at Warkworth.

P8

Mr Taylor’s work hangs in galleries the length of the country and around the world and he was regarded as one of the leading representational artists of his time. He was Patron of Mangawhai Artists Incorporated and an enthusiastic art educator, passing on his skills and knowledge in classes. His works were exhibited at The Royal Academy of Arts, The Institute of Royal Oil Painters, and The Kings Gallery — St James, London. Self-taught, Bev was born in 1936 in Wiltshire, England and immigrated to New Zealand in 1972 with his wife

Glenyse. Before moving to Warkworth, the couple lived at their Kaiwaka property where he had his studio/ gallery on a small block of land which they called Puketotara. “Bev was a husband, father and grandfather and he was a real inspiration and a fantastic teacher who was very generous with his time. “He could not have been as successful as he was without the support of Glen, together they were a real team,” said friend and former art student Donna Shadick. Mangawhai residents Donna, and long time Taylor family friend Roger

Ashford, both received oil painting lessons from Bev. “He was incredibly talented and really wanted to teach people about art and how to paint. “He was very passionate about it and was always willing to pass on information he had gleaned over the years. “He gave his students the confidence to paint with oils. His passion and love for art was all encompassing” says Donna. He gave students pointers yet didn’t influence their style. … continued on page 6

The newest building at Kaurilands Skills Centre has risen from a few marks on the dirt, to the makings of a four bedroom home, and is well on its way to completion.

p Kaurilands service user John Maber and general manager Karen Duncan

The house will be the centre’s third residential building and will be home to four people. Kaurilands general manager Karen Duncan says in general the disability sector is moving towards encouraging independence and this house will foster this. “It will teach the group independant living skills. It will be set up like any shared living space and if they choose to leave Kaurilands, hopefully we will have given them enough life skills to do that.” The current buildings house nine and 10 people and are staffed 24/7. The newest building will be unstaffed overnight. Work is being completed by Northtec level four carpentry students as part of their curriculum and tutor Richard Runciman says the experience they are

gaining through this project is invaluable. “It gives them practical experience for the theory work,” he says. Kaurilands umbrella organisation, the Tokatoka Foundation, also received a substantial grant from Pub Charity which will go towards work on Kaurilands overall water reticulation including for the new building. Karen says the project is a joint community effort. “The contractors and students are all part of the community. We might all have different needs but we all get something out of it.” Service user John Maber says he is looking forward to moving in and choosing his bedroom and says it will be a nice change. The building is expected to be completed by the end of the year but finishing touches and other preparations will run into 2016. ¢

The day marked Cadbur y’s announcement of a major partnership in suppor t of New Zealand Para-athletes on the road to the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. The Spirit of Gold initiative is a new long-term campaign designed to increase awareness and raise funds to support Para-Sport in the community and in the short term, help fund the team on the road to Rio 2016. “Paralympic athletes gathered together to mark one year to go to Rio. I ride for Paralympics New Zealand and Laura and I are still gaining qualifying points. Our last competition is the Track Worlds in March, we will then find out if we qualify to go to Rio,” said Emma.

“Norfolk Court congratulates five of its care giving staff on achieving their NZQA recognised qualification in aged care. Education and training is important to our staff as it assists in achieving an excellent standard of care for our residents.”

Friday Morning Sportszone Show

“It was a fun day with the children having photos and playing games. Laura and I looked after a station where they had to be blindfolded and go through an obstacle course giving the students a sense of disabled sports. “Rio is getting nearer, and it is now less than a year away. The launch of the slogan was Spirit of Gold — with the goal to get gold.” The Rio 2016 Paralympic Games will take place from the 7–18 September 2016. Taking place every four years, they are the world’s largest multi-sport event for disabled athletes. More than 4,350 athletes from 178 countries are expected to compete in 22 sports, with 526 medal events. ¢

Safety call around drones Owner and operator of the National Grid, Transpower and local distribution company, Northpower today are reminding UAV operators to take particular care when operating unmanned aircraft near overhead transmission and distribution lines. The prompt follows two incidents in the last week where UAVs (otherwise known as drones) have been operated at an unsafe proximity to electricity lines; one striking a high voltage transmission line in the Upper South Island and the other contacting an overhead line on Northpower’s distribution network in Northland. Transpower’s General Manager Grid Performance, Jim Tocher highlighted the importance of maintaining safe distances from electricity lines at all times. “We would advise that UAV operators use their aircraft well away from high voltage transmission lines and substations as they have the potential to put the public, our staff and contractors at risk and disrupt power supply.” “The UAV that struck a high voltage line recently had to be removed by experienced line crews while keeping the transmission line in service to avoid potential power outages and disruption to the area that those lines supply,” he said. “Positively in this situation, the owner of the UAV contacted us immediately, didn’t try to remove the aircraft himself, and stayed on site until our personnel arrived. We commend the owner for his approach which helped to keep the site safe and enabled quick identification and removal of the UAV,” he said. Northpower’s Public Affairs Manager Steve MacMillan stressed the importance of UAV operators being fully aware of powerlines and encouraged operators to plan their flights so that a separation of at least 20 metres from overhead electrical infrastructure is maintained. “Large carbon fibre UAVs tend to be used with DSLR cameras and these larger video cameras are a serious hazard to electrical infrastructure and should not be flown at all near powerlines. “The UAV that connected with our line caused a flashover which resulted in the UAV breaking up and falling to the ground. Fortunately no one was injured and the line did not come down, but this risk could have been avoided had the operator been aware of the lines and complied with minimum safety distances. Around 200 commercial and industrial businesses had to stop work over that period and we suspect a loss of at least 1000 manhours of productivity for the businesses affected - a very significant cost.” “Anyone operating an unmanned aircraft that has accidentally come into contact with electricity or transmission lines should not attempt to retrieve the aircraft, but call the relevant electricity company for assistance,” he said. Information about the safe operation of unmanned aircraft can be found at www. caa.govt.nz or at www.airshare.co.nz.

Beware of Spark fraudsters u by Ann Morgan

Spark has established a Scam Hotline after receiving reports from customers about phone contact by fraudsters claiming to be from the company. Spark, Microsoft New Zealand and NetSafe are advising home computer users to be vigilant. There has been a significant increase in reports of scammers trying to defraud people by claiming to be calling from Spark or Microsoft. NetSafe’s executive director Martin Cocker says this pattern of scamming is not new and they use the Microsoft and Spark brands as the companies are known to have trusted experts. “Unfortunately some people believe the calls are genuine and are led to believe they are doing the right thing by handing over private passwords or details.” The scammers claim Spark customers have viruses on their computers, or are downloading pornographic content and that their services will be cut off due to security issues, unless they change their settings or clean up their computers.

They have become more aggressive as they offer to fix computers and ask for remote access. This can reveal credit card details or bank account numbers. Customers are directed to a website where they are asked to download software, which the fraudsters have branded as Spark. Microsoft NZ marketing and operations director Frazer

Surf students from the Mangawhai training program, Surf Dojo, competed in the 2015 National Scholastic Surfing Championships in Gisborne last week. “There was a good turn out of Mangawhai students and the management team were pleased with their performance,” said coach Tony Baker. “Cory Vercoe, a year eight student at Mangawhai Beach School has been competing regularly in New Zealand events and narrowly missed out on making the finals. He was joined at the event by fellow Mangawhai surfers Jake Buckle, Taj Robinson and Luke Vercoe. “We had some very tough competition and conditions were perfect for a high level of surfing. It was great to see so many Mangawhai kids featuring in both the Primary Schools and Scholastic Champs this year.

“Bev enabled people and even though he travelled the world and had a famous clientele, he was never pretentious and could see potential in anybody. “His artworks, particularly of the Kaipara, were stunning as he captured the true feel and light of the area. “He was self taught and one of New Zealand’s foremost artists. I don’t think he got the acclaim in New Zealand that he deserved. He discovered a lot of techniques by reading, and figuring it out from there how to do things. “Bev was highly acclaimed internationally, particularly in England and America. His style was classic, like

the old masters. “Bev had really fun classes, he was a very entertaining, funny man and told lots of jokes. “He worked hard at his art, surrounded by his chooks. When you went to his studio you had to get through his chickens, which were all rare and very beautiful breeds. He knew poultry well and was a poultry judge, so when he came to paint them he knew exactly how they should be,” said friend and fellow artist Dawn Mann. Mr Taylor’s funeral was held at the chapel of Jason Morrison Funeral Services, Warkworth on Friday October 2, followed by a private cremation. ¢

The sequel to Material Girls, written by Deborah Steele and co-directed and choreographed by Julianne Parkinson, is set 15 years later and follows the lives of a girl group and their children. Next generation for Foster’s Ready for trolley derby u by Ayla Miller

u by Ann Morgan

Well established local business, Foster’s Home Decorating, is being officially passed on to the next generation, as Arron and Karen Foster take over sole ownership from Arron’s parents.

The first Kauri Museum trolley derby workshop had participants quickly getting over their initial apprehension, rolling up their sleeves and pitching in to construct trolleys made from everyday materials.

Ken and Ellain Foster bought the local paint store in 1984 and grew the business with the help of their daughter Debbie and Ellain’s sister Sally. The business began supplying house paint, wallpaper and automotive paint, gradually encompassing curtains when their eldest son Greg came on board. Over the next few years the business continued to expand and in the early 90’s Arron joined them, p The Foster’s Home Decorating team Karen, Arron, Ellain, Ken and Mason Foster with Angela Finlayson and Michael Quelch running the furniture and The business includes the Resene bedding department. p Participants of the trolley derby workshop at the Kauri Museum learnt to design and construct their own trolleys

“It was a great success and the designs and quality of construction were put to the test and trialled alongside some more contemporary models,” said CEO of The Kauri Museum, Lisa Tolich. “One of our engineering enthusiasts, Kerry Bonham remarked that the children showed a preference for their own constructions over the faster models and took great satisfaction in the end result. “A number of the participants were looking forward to taking their plans home and perfecting their designs over the next two months, prior to the museum’s inaugural trolley derby on Settlers Day, Saturday November 28. “The Kauri Museum’s annual Settlers

Day event showcases the traditional arts, crafts and pastimes of our Kaipara settlers. Market stalls will be on offer again this year, sitting comfortably alongside crowd favourites like gum polishing, woodturning demonstrations and the creation of tussie mussies — flower arrangements — to take home. “Children’s activities will be on offer throughout the day to ensure a family friendly day out and enjoyment for all ages. “A schedule of the day’s activities will be publicised in the near future.” For more information, or to register your interest in attending this event, contact The Kauri Museum on 09 431 7417 or email admin@kaurimuseum. com ¢

Dining & ENTERTAINMENT Spring delights and fresh flavours

Q CAFE & R E ST AUR ANT

u by Andy Bryenton

It’s all about old classics and new sensations this month, as we head into the middle of spring and approach the spookiest night of the year — Halloween. First up, there’s the chance to experience the music of 70s icon Fleetwood Mac, right here in Dargaville. No — not the original lineup, but a lovingly pitch-perfect cover band, decked out to the nines in period costume and featuring a thoroughly convincing Stevie Nicks up front. The tribute show will take place in the restaurant of the Northern Wairoa Hotel, and can be enjoyed as either a purely musical night of classics, or as dinner and show incorporating a three course buffet. Not to be outdone, the grand old Maungaturoto Hotel are turning up the heat with an entirely new menu, top to bottom. Spring has been the prompt for the new management to re-design their pub fare and their more gourmet dine in selection, offering a range which covers some good old local favourites as well as sizzling mixed grills, crumbed scallops, a daily roast and some of the biggest burgers ever to grace a plate. Knife and fork material, for certain! Down at the Aratapu Tavern the Northern Wairoa Country and Western Club are hosting a proper country shindig on the 9th, sure to be accompanied by some fine southern-style fare from the kitchen. In Paparoa, the Village

Gourmet Pizzas and stunning Pastas. Gorgeous range of pies, sandwiches (toasted and untoasted), chowder & soups. Fantastic scallop dishes. Full day and evening menus.

BIG BOYS TOYS Putting gear to good use u by Ayla Miller

The Kauri Coast is a patchwork of stunning natural landscapes just asking to be explored, whether it be on foot, wheels or by sea, and the skill it takes to navigate this area could one day make a significant difference in someone’s life. The Northland Search and Rescue chairman and Land SAR advisor to the New Zealand Police, Grant Conaghan, says people who enjoy getting out and about make great additions to search and rescue teams. “We like people who are used to being outdoors because they have got a bit of knowledge about their own safety and how to walk around in the field without tripping over their own feet,” says Grant. “We are just starting to use the Kauri Coast Four Wheel Drive club for transport in the area.” He says being involved with search and rescue gives people a sense of being able to give back to the community and they get land search and rescue training once a month. “We hope they arrive with bush craft skills, but if they don’t, we teach that if necessary. Generally it is on the job training in the search team and they

can learn off other experienced people. “The training can be search and rescue related skills, tracking, search methods and we also do first aid courses.” Exploring this rugged and sometimes unforgiving terrain is a great way to let the inner child out, test equipment and use the vehicles in situations they are created for. The Kauri Coast Four Wheel Drive club know how rewarding it can be to see what their big boy’s and girl’s toys can achieve. “We get to share our passion with the community and we also take people who have 4WD’s out and show them what their vehicles are capable of in a controlled environment,” says secretary and treasurer Serena Carran. Those interested in joining Northland Search and Rescue can contact Grant on 027 220 1789 or email him at grantconaghan@hotmail.co.nz ¢

In the popular seaside town of Mangawhai, this heralds busy times for growing business Jackson Brown Automotive and Marine. With recent expansions to their range and their services, owners James and Matt are very positive about the 2015 season. “Mangawhai is growing so quickly these days and I expect this year to be our busiest yet,” says James. “I’d like to thank all of our customers for their support and I am confident we will be able to provide a better service to the area now with the addition of Honda Marine Outboards and a Repco reseller store.” Alongside championship-winning motorcycles and cars, Honda produce some of the most smoothest and powerful marine motors in the business. Repco, of course, is the name which has been right behind Kiwi ‘petrolheads’ for

generations, even building up the RepcoBrabham formula one car which dominated the track in 1966. This is important for Mangawhai and the east Kaipara, a playground for anglers and boaties in the summertime. From servicing and WOFs for road vehicles through to advanced diagnostics using a computer interface, the qualified team in Mangawhai have drivers covered. Under the same roof, boaties will find experienced marine technicians to get those marine motors, jet skis, trailers or tractors humming, or to help fit out their vessels with the latest in safety features and electronics. An open day on the 7th of November will provide an opportunity for customers to check out the new additions, as well as an opportunity to get in the draw to win a boat and ute package for summer fun.
