p Children in Tinopai are learning arts and crafts thanks to free school holiday art workshops. “We initiated the workshops because our tamariki live in an isolated rural community,” says school administrator Leanne Thompson. “Children benefit from exposure to various art forms including journaling, rock painting and puppet making. Thanks to local artists, two murals will be proudly hung at our school library. A funding application made to the Kaipara District Council’s Creative Communities Scheme for local arts projects is pending a decision. We decided to proceed regardless after receiving positive interest and enthusiasm in Tinopai. We have had the pleasure of watching local and visiting children on holiday come together and form new friendships through the joy of learning arts. The programme has been very successful, and we hope to run more in the future.”

Landfill battle will continue u by Paul Campbell

Despite a call from Auckland Council for hearing commissioners to refuse resource consent for a massive landfill in Dome Valley, seen as an environmental threat to the immediate surroundings and the wider Kaipara Harbour, the company concerned is pressing ahead with its application.

Before we closed for the school holidays, we ran our own Duffy Book Assembly. Each child received two brand new books to take home to enjoy over the term break. Choices included Chicken Diva’s, Scarface Claw and The Very Hungry Caterpillar, to name a few.”

p The closing night for the Pouto Indoor Bowling Club turned into a night of hilarity and presentations. “Chaos reigned supreme with awards following a bountiful supper. Decorated hats, playing bowls with your off hand and a game of double kitties progressed into a greater challenge with teams playing from opposing ends,” says club member Jenny Mager. “Indoor Bowls is a game where people of all ages can come together and enjoy a friendly competition. A competent 10-yearold can play alongside, or against, a seasoned 94-year-old. Age is only a number in the mind.”

Landfill battle will continue In the latest move in the battle, Auckland Council recommended refusal to grant resource consent on the grounds of cultural and environmental damage including danger to several threatened species. However, Waste Management says it is pressing ahead with its plan, which opponents say will also require hundreds of rubbish truck movements a day through the already congested SH 1. Fight The Tip campaign executive member Michelle Carmichael has written to the company “to appeal to your professional ethics. Please walk away from this project and gain community respect for doing the right thing now that you have more information about the site. “You started this process with desktop studies, but now that you’ve learned more, please save any reputation you have left and admit that this is not an environmentally responsible place to have a landfill. The effects of any breach in the future are too catastrophic and far-reaching, for the immediate environment and its ecology and also to the environment all the way out to and including the Kaipara Harbour.” In a statement, the company has claimed “the (Auckland Council) report also says leachate is highly unlikely to leak into the surrounding environment due to the quality landfill lining system and leachate collection and disposal systems, rigorous monitoring system and site geology. controls and management systems, in combination with the measures proposed to manage leachate and air discharges, ensures that the risk of adverse human health and environment effects will be suitably addressed.” Kaipara Mayor Jason Smith says: “For more than a year there’s been increasingly clear condemnation of the dump proposal by people who care about the place and the health of the Kaipara Harbour. However, the story is not yet at its end. I continue preparing to present against the proposal to the resource consent hearing commissioners in November. “I’m more hopeful since the Auckland Council announcement, that the Dome Valley dump won’t happen. However, as I’ve said before about resource consent processes, don’t count your chickens before they’re hatched.” The hearing will begin on Monday, November 9, at Warkworth Town Hall. ¢

ENVIRONMENTAL INFORMATION AND UPDATES FROM KAIPARA WARD NORTHLAND REGIONAL COUNCILLOR PENNY SMART SUMMER DRY SPELL IS STILL A THREAT Kaipara and much of the west coast of Northland are still below normal rainfall levels for the year. Please continue to take conservation actions every day. THE ROLE OF AN NRC COUNCILLOR IN RESOURCE CONSENTS I have received several emails asking for councillor involvement in NRC Resource Consents. I am wanting to provide some information on current NRC Councillor Policy and Best Practice in this area. NRC Councillor Policy is to not appoint councillors to resource consent hearings. It is considered Best Practice among Councils that councillors should not take part in decisions on resource consents. Independent, transparent and resilient decisions are the only acceptable outcome from resource consent hearings. This can only be achieved by avoiding conflict of interest situations and non-blurring of the lines between the governance and the operations of a council. Minimising the possibility of political interference in these decisions is important and recognises the role of Governance in setting Policy in the first instance. This equally applies to when a resource consent application is publicly notified, has limited notification or is non notified. The Resource Management Act 1991 does

Voting opens for 2020 election

provide a consent authority (council) the power to review the conditions of a resource consent that it has granted under specific circumstances, however importantly it does not provide a council the power to: a) Review and change (quash) a decision that it has made on notification of a consent application after a consent has been granted. That can only be done by the High Court when determining judicial review proceedings. b) “Retract” a resource consent it has granted, except where the resource consent has been exercised in the past but has not been exercised during the preceding 5 years. This is documented specifically, under section 126 of the Act. The consent holder may object to the consent authority and/or appeal the cancellation of the consent to the Environment Court. UPDATE ON THE REGIONAL PLAN AND REGIONAL POLICY STATEMENT The appeals on the NRC Proposed Regional Plan is currently going through either facilitated mediation or the Environment Court process. The Regional Plan was notified in 2017. The Regional Policy Statement will undergo a five-year review starting mid2021. Saturday, October 3 saw the beginning of voting on who will make up for future government, as well as a public mandate on cannabis control reform and end of life choices. Voting will remain open until election day on October 17 at 7pm. Between now and then, voting stations will be open in most towns and centres to accept your ballot on all three issues. Packs detailing the parties, referendum questions and choices have been out in local letter boxes in the past week. There are several locations where citizens can vote early, avoiding a possible queue on election day as social distancing measures are enacted to protect older voters against Covid-19. In Dargaville, these early voting stations are open this week at the Dargaville Baptist Church Hall, 187 Victoria Street, The Lighthouse Church Hall, 78 Normanby Street and Northern Wairoa Memorial

Hall Conference Room, 37 Hokianga Road. Ruawai voters can vote early at their local primary school, while those on State Highway 12 can place their ballot now at the Maungaturoto Centennial Community Hall, 44 View Street. On the eastern side, Kaiwaka citizens can vote now at the Kaiwaka War Memorial Hall. Mangawhai residents are invited to participate in democracy at the Mangawhai Public Library Hall, Mangawhai Museum and Mangawhai Community Centre. On election day itself, many other locations will be set up as polling booths, especially in our smaller towns to encourage full engagement with the democratic process. For a full list of election day only polling booths near you, visit vote.nz. Consult the ‘how to vote’ section, which will provide a map of every booth in New Zealand for your convenience.

Choice meets responsibility — cannabis law u by Andy Bryenton

The first of two referenda attached to the forthcoming general election seeks to alter the laws around the control, taxation, availability and legal status of cannabis. What do you think? Consider these big questions and whether the legislation addresses them in a way that will benefit society. Read it at referendums.govt.nz/ cannabis. As with any big issue, there is propaganda and rumour out there, mixed in with reasonable debate. Be careful of one-sided opinions and the agendas on social media of those who don’t tell both sides of the story. Here are some of the compelling arguments both anti and pro the new bill. NO VOTE — Cannabis is scientifically proven to be detrimental to the development of the brain in young people. It can also exacerbate preexisting mental illness, and smoking is unhealthy, as it is for tobacco.

Big

River FM

Permanent brain damage is a real threat with lifelong consequences. YES VOTE — The status quo does very little to deter cannabis use, and drug dealers do not ask for ID. A regulated market would make it illegal to sell cannabis to those under 21, and provide appropriate support for those who use cannabis to self-medicate for mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety. NO VOTE — Drug-impaired driving may increase, causing fatalities, and drug-related workplace accidents would also increase if the use of cannabis was ‘normalised’ by legalisation. A law change would signal that the use of the substance was acceptable. Easy access will encourage poor choices, especially

in circumstances of limited income where cannabis may be prioritised over necessities. YES VOTE — Ending cannabis prohibition in the Netherlands, Australia and 17 US states has not led to increases in cannabis use. Only 23% of Dutch people between 15 to 64 years old had ever tried marijuana. Seven per cent had used it recently, compared to 52% and 24% in the US, and 50% lifetime use and 15% recent use in New Zealand. NO VOTE — The cost of enforcement of new laws, testing for impaired drivers and workers, excise and tax agencies, health-based harm reduction programmes and rehabilitation would be

a huge financial cost to the New Zealand taxpayer, with some aspects of the new legislation almost impossible to monitor or police fairly. A black market would still persist, untaxed, and would still need enforcement. YES VOTE — The taxed sale of cannabis could generate an economically significant amount of excise revenue; money we need to fund social services like healthcare. We could also experience nationwide job growth by cultivating cannabis, hemp and other products for an emerging multi-billion dollar international market. Millions of dollars of police resources could be redirected to ‘hard’ crime reduction. ¢

Church has an uncertain future

Dargaville qualifies ‘most friendly’

u by Paul Campbell

u by Andy Bryenton

A 160-year-old Anglican church at Hukatere is the subject of a community ‘tug-of-war’ dispute as to what its role will be in the future, with a movement underway to preserve it on-site, a church wanting to sell it and another community wanting it transported to a historic village display.

Tourism website AirBnB has compiled a handy list of the friendliest towns in New Zealand, ranked by the number of five-star reviews handed down by guests. Dargaville has rated exceptionally highly, landing in the nation’s top 10.

The c o n t r ov e r s y surrounds St Michael on the Hill on the Tinopai Road where locals gathered last Sunday in a show of support to retain it in its present location. “This little church served the needs of the local area until the district changed and it fell into disrepair,” said local Hukatere resident, p Hukatere residents gathered last Sunday in a show of support for retaining and restoring the historic church John Eddy. Dargaville has ‘punched above its weight’ according to the delighted response of the town’s development board, the DCDB. The staff there reacted to the news with the kind of goodwill which likely made the award possible. Opining that: “AirBnB is telling the nation what we knew all along. Our little town is a very friendly and welcoming place that we’re proud of.” Only three Northland locations made the top 10, with Opua landing as number one, while nearby Haruru scooped spot number 10. Neighbours Darfield and Rolleston in Canterbury snagged positions three and four. Kiwifruit capital Katikati in the Bay of Plenty was runner-up. Dargaville placed eighth, which is still a capital achievement considering the number of fine and famous tourist towns that ranked lower on the list. “Congratulations to everyone in Dargaville on being recognised as one of the most welcoming places in New Zealand,” said Mayor Dr Jason

Smith. “Warm welcomes are what we do well here. With more people than ever discovering Dargaville and Kaipara, let’s keep our welcomes warm and our manaakitanga strong, kind and generous.” ¢

Roadside projects

Baylys Beach walkway underway

We’ve used funding under the Te Tai Tokerau Redeployment Package to complete some exciting roadside projects. The funding package, through the Provincial Growth Fund, is providing urgent economic relief for those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, by creating immediate work opportunities for local people.

Construction has started on the new Baylys Beach walkway. The work is funded by a $300,000 grant received through the Tourism Infrastructure Fund.

Mahi has included prioritised roadside litter collections along Baylys Coast Road, Parore West Road, Waihue Road, and Tangowahine Valley Road, with more areas to be confirmed. Our team is also working on other roadside improvements, such as dangerous tree removal, self-seeded tree removal, noxious weed spraying, sight rail improvements in selected areas, as well as a new footpath in Matakohe. This work will improve the visual appeal of the areas, improve safety, and reduce need for future maintenance.

The new timber walkway starts opposite Chases Gorge Bridge and follows the road corridor on the beach side, creating a dedicated pedestrian space and significantly improving safety for those on foot in the area. Environmental responsibility is a priority in the implementation and design of the walkway. The team have consulted dune care specialists throughout the pre-construction process to ensure the dunes are protected while the work is undertaken. Shifting sands are allowed for in the walkway design, to ensure longevity. Once the work is complete, planting will take place around the walkway to further support the dunes. With good weather the construction is expected to be finished by mid-December. The public toilet will be closed while work in its immediate vicinity is completed and traffic management will help keep you safe around the building site. For any queries please email parks@kaipara.govt.nz

Dargaville pontoon construction The Dargaville pontoon is taking shape, and it’s looking sharp! The work is part of Kaipara KickStart, led by Kaipara District Council and funded by the Provincial Growth Fund. Once complete the pontoon will enable a wider range of boats and larger vessels to tie up and berth in Dargaville, as well as creating all tide access for smaller vessels.

Photo taken by our contractor Ventia (NZ) Operations Ltd: Local legend Selwyn Watts undertaking sight rail improvements on Baylys Coast Road.

The pontoon is estimated to take another week or so and will be the first of the Kaipara Wharves to be completed. For more info check out the Kaipara KickStart website kaipara.govt.nz/kickstart/kaipara-harbour-wharves.

A generous gift to those in need

THERE IS A FULL TIME PRIVATE CLINIC IN WHANGAREI, RUN BY WOMEN FOR WOMEN’S HEALTH PROBLEMS

u by Andy Bryenton

Such as troublesome bleeding; menopause concerns; abnormal smears; pelvic pain; pain or irritation ‘down there’; fertility issues; non–surgery options for prolapse and bladder problems.

Dargaville Lions Club members have banded together to donate $2,000 to the local food bank, lending a helping hand to those in greatest need this spring. Lions president, Clive McDermott, handed across a cheque to assist the operation of the Dargaville food bank last Thursday, with the good wishes of the entire club behind the gesture. Food bank spokesperson Millie Moran was there at the Lions Hall to receive the donation and says that this windfall will go a long way in challenging times. “We’re very grateful to the Lions Club for this gift,” she said. “Every bit counts, and we’ll be able to help many families with a donation like this. It means a lot.” Dargaville’s food bank is a notfor-profit organisation run entirely by volunteers. Millie says that recent Covidrelated job losses and hard economic times have taken their toll. The food bank chief opines that poverty is a real social ill in rural New Zealand, not just in the big cities, and is very much an issue post-Covid. A number of Dargaville food bank parcels even go out each week to those who are working, thanks to low wages, short hours and high rents to name but a few economic factors. With the assistance of many generous donors, including the Lions, the local food bank can create tailored packages with meat, vegetables, produce, bread and canned goods to assist families struggling with a lack of available governmental assistance or

Many of the common problems can be treated with simple minor procedures done either at the clinic or at Kensington Hospital. The emphasis at the clinic is on making sure women have as much information as possible about their own health on which to base their decisions as to the type of treatment that is best for them. Dr. Rachel Moss, the specialist gynaecologist, can see you to make a thorough gynaecological assessment and discuss options for treatment. A GP referral can be helpful but is not essential.

APPLIED LEARNING FOR GREAT RESULTS Jon Smith, Acting Chief Executive, says NorthTec’s applied learning style puts students at the centre and ensures they get the best preparation for employment.

“This means our learners experience real work situations, challenges and problems, so they know what to expect when they leave NorthTec and have the skills and attitudes sought by employers.

“Our programmes are delivered in a way that’s very practical and hands-on, so all learners get the chance to practice their new skills throughout their course,” he says.

“Our tutors and navigators also spend time helping our learners develop their softer work-ready skills. This enables them to go into work with the confidence of knowing that they’re ready to hit the ground running and fit straight into their new workplace.

“As well as teaching the techniques and knowledge needed for the trades, we also organise on-the-job training, field trips, industry projects, internships, work and clinical placements for learners.

“At NorthTec our staff are closely connected to local industry and employers, ensuring we remain responsive so you can start building networks while you’re still learning.”

Our learners experience real work situations, challenges and problems, so they know what to expect when they leave NorthTec and have the skills and attitudes sought by employers.

NEW ZEALAND’S

TOP 20 MOST-NEEDED WORKERS

A survey of employers released from seek.co.nz shows that NorthTec’s vocational training prepares learners for the majority of New Zealand’s most in-demand jobs, post-COVID-19.

GET JOB-READY AT NORTHTEC NorthTec graduate Bella Wati says that she has always been a hands-on learner and that’s why she loved studying at NorthTec. “I loved being outside and actually learning while I was doing the work. There was a bit of paperwork to do as well, but with the help that NorthTec provided me I was able to fly through it and pass everything. “Through doing work placements while I studied I was able to get a full-time job because I knew exactly what I had to do in the industry. The course prepared me so well for this job because I learnt exactly what a

day in the life of a dairy farmer looked like – the course gave me everything that I needed to know and I learnt so much in the course that I am now able to run a farm by myself!” Alex McInnes, NorthTec Agriculture tutor, says the industry experience the students get is incredible. “It’s first-hand training and we also have work placements options on various farms throughout Northland. We have great courses because when the students finish, they’ve got the knowledge and know-how to go straight into a job. They’re confident in themselves to go out and be a part of the industry.”

Deadly good fun

Contest a Covid casualty

u by Andy Bryenton

u by Paul Campbell

Dargaville Little Theatre’s company have put coronavirus delays behind them and opened strongly with an enthusiastically received first weekend for their murder mystery comedy Prepare to Meet Thy Tomb.

The spectre of Covid-19 has once again disrupted everyday life with the cancellation of last weekend’s eagerly awaited Kai Iwi Lakes Trout Fishing Contest organised by Fish and Game Northland.

p Dargaville Little Theatre patrons are invited to unravel a bizarre tale of ambition, blackmail, greed and homicide with a comic twist this week

Director Carole Collins and the cast of 10 murderous miscreants pushed through early delays caused by the global pandemic, delivering a performance designed to keep the audience guessing until the final body hit the floor. With feckless honeymooners, upper-crust assassins, possible serial killers and at least one bestselling crime novelist in the mix, Prepare to Meet Thy Tomb presents more plot twists than any dozen other similar mysteries. Backstage, the cast was exuberant about finally reaching curtain time, after a long gestation for the production. Carole Collins says it’s great to finally see it all come together, as many of the rehearsals covered only a small arc of the story. The complete, intricately plotted concept only falls into place when

presented in full. Patrons will have to be very sharp indeed to catch all the clues and puzzle pieces which have been slipped into the dialogue by playwright Norman Robbins. “It might not be one for the smaller kids, but it’s a play with a lot of dark humour and quirky characters,” said the actress depicting the poison-mad Aunt Hecuba Tomb (don’t try her herbal teas). Reviewers overseas have called the production a blend of Agatha Christie and the Addams Family. All set in a fog-bound, gloomy English manor house full of trap doors and hidden passages. There’s a whole second week of performances to catch, so if you’ve missed out so far, come along and match wits with a mad murderer; in comfortable theatrical safety, of course. ¢

p Happier times for Northland Fish and Game Council regional manager, Rudi Hoetjes, after releasing trout stock in a stream

“It was a case of having to make a decision because of uncertainty over Auckland’s level two. We had to make the call, that in this time of Covid problems, it was best to cancel the event,” said Northland Fish and Game Council regional manager, Rudi Hoetjes. “It was a double blow because we had already postponed the contest from its original date around July, again because of the lockdowns.” Mr Hoetjes said before the decision was made, early ticket sales had been

slow and finding sufficient sponsors because of the pandemic had been difficult. We have been busy contacting entrants by email, but we will hopefully be able to bring the competition back next year.” The popular Kaipara event is usually a family weekend, from Friday to Sunday, drawing visitors to the region with many camping at the lakes. It is free for ‘juniors and children’ who vie for the heaviest trout, with second, third and fourth placings, as well as other prizes and lucky draws. ¢

For the past four and a half years, Monique Bradley has spent every day being reminded she is lucky to be alive. Nearly five years ago the carefree teenager was riding a horse on the beach at Whananaki South with a group of girls when her horse suddenly suffered the anguish of two broken front legs, throwing her from its back and rolling on her as it hit the ground. The pain would have been unimaginable for Monique – however she was knocked unconscious and to this day, remembers nothing from her accident. The memories have been filled in by those who were there, who called for help, and kept her still on the sand while they waited for help to arrive – and help came in the form of the Northland Rescue Helicopter.

Due to the horse’s condition and the possibility of it getting a fright from the landing helicopter, the chopper landed further down the beach. The horse was lying just beside where Monique had landed and the risk of it hurting Monique further was a real one, especially if it got a fright from the chopper. All safety precautions were taken, and Monique was soon loaded onto a board and taken in the chopper to Whangarei Hospital. Once she was safely off the beach, her horse had to be euthanised to end its suffering.

On arrival, medical staff determined she had a fractured spine and a brain bleed. She remained unconscious and to this day, her memory only resurfaces about four to five days after the accident. After one week at Whangarei Hospital, Monique was transferred to ABI Brain Rehabilitation in Auckland where she stayed for a month before being finally able to return home. Back in 2015, Monique had already started university, studying to be a teacher, while also riding horses, doing a bit of modelling and coaching horse-riding at a pony club. Following her accident, Monique suffered from the effects of having a traumatic brain injury. This meant initially having to learn to walk, communicate and eat again and saw her struggle with her studies and general wellbeing – each day bringing a reminder of what had happened and what was now a “new normal”. Students’ waharoa completed u by Ann van Engelen

Otamatea High School whakairo class has delivered the waharoa they were commissioned to create for Whangarei Playcentre. Whakairo is the traditional Maori art of carving in wood, stone or bone. The students worked on the collaborative gateway piece together last term. “We had a great day taking the wooden carved pieces up to the play centre for installation. We have placed the waharoa at the entrance to the firepit in the play centre nature area,” says whakairo teacher Jay Simmonds.

“The Matariki artwork made by the junior class is secured to the ceiling of the entranceway. The weather was perfect, and every whakairo student participated in the installation.” Playcentre member Emily Attwood said the piece was commissioned to bring a cultural connection to the premises. “We have developed a natural play area for the children where old trees have been removed. We wanted wood and rocks and natural things for children to play with. I had seen whare-type structures on a website, and my sisterin-law told me she had seen what Jay had done with her students. “I have been involved in playcentre for 10 years and this is my last year with my own children. “It is special to leave something significant for future families to enjoy. Being at the entrance to our fire pit and having Matariki on the ceiling is extra special. The children relate to the paintings as well as they already know about Matariki.

BRIGHT IDEAS ADVERTORIAL

Get yourself in hot water by Andy Bryenton

By now, most of us are familiar with the heat pump concept, the modern form of air conditioning, which uses a heat exchange principle to save money on heating or cooling your home. It’s not just up on the wall in your living room that you’ll find this kind of technology, though. As well as its use to heat the air, research has been underway for many years in how this same method can be used to efficiently heat water, leading to some advancements which are now making their way into the home after being deployed in heavy-duty situations already. Heat pump washing machines and dryers are one example, coming out of the industrial laundry and into the washrooms of suburbia. Next off the block; heat pump hot water cylinders.

Thanks to how a heat exchanger operates, models like the EcoSpring heat pump hot water cylinder work best when placed outdoors. A counter-intuitive move for those of us used to wrapping our old electric boiler in layers of insulation and foil. With the entire unit sealed up as one, the EcoSpring both looks like and acts like a thermos flask, unperturbed by low temperatures. The part that does the business, the compressor and heat exchanger on top, thrives when it can use the ambient air temperature to its advantage, saving up to 70 per cent on

p Who isn’t keen to save 70 per cent on their hot water heating bill? The cost to benefit analysis comes out in full favour of hot water heat pumps for the family home

the usual household’s hot water bill. That’s a big chunk of change when you consider that water heating can account for a third of a home’s entire power consumption ‘footprint’. It’s a handy way to help reduce strain on the grid, save the environment and pocket a nice bonus when the bill comes in the mail. The makers of these units confidently suggest that in four years the roughly $3,500–$4,000 purchase price will be paid back in full, with many long years of operation left during which the discounts will keep rolling. There’s a little added bonus too. With the hot water cylinder

removed to a discreet spot outdoors, there’s a whole large cupboard freed up in your home for linen, storage or possibly a bathroom expansion. With a solid history of power saving in heavy use, hot water heat pumps are the standard these days in modern hospitals, rest homes, schools and even in the military; this is one fresh idea which is ready to deploy now. Proponents say it can be cheaper to run than a califont, and installation is simple and straightforward. Talk to your local accredited plumbers to see if this new innovation is right for your home.

BRIGHT IDEAS ADVERTORIAL

Seizing the housing initiative by Andy Bryenton

Dargaville business owner Marty Brown is best known for his mobile pest plant control company. However, when the Covid crisis handed him downtime, he turned it into an opportunity to branch out in a fresh direction. Seeing a gap in the market, and knowing that his team possessed extra skills as yet untapped in their day-to-day operations, the Edward Street-based entrepreneur had a good long talk with his foreman of 20 years, John. Then approached an architect mate about a new design for well-built, comfortable and warm portable cabins. “It seemed like a great idea, as the team had a lot of building skill between them, and we were able to draw on the advice of people with experience. The philosophy we work with is simple. I build them as if I was building them for my own kids to live in. That’s a scenario, which nearly happened, as family members returned from overseas and around the country during lockdown. “However, the spark of inspiration led to a whole lot of planning and work. During which Marty refused to compromise, seeing that other cabin builders often delivered suboptimal results by cutting corners.

His trailer-mounted cabins thus use thicker insulation and underlay, softer carpets, heavier, treated timber, recessed lighting and more power points for ease of access. They come with fold-out decks and a design, which makes them easy to emplace, even down narrow access ways. Two sizes will be available, both of which can accommodate a double bed, desk and storage with room to spare; perfect to add an extra room temporarily. That is all great news for a region experiencing a housing crunch, as renting these cabins may provide the perfect, versatile way to expand a home’s occupancy. Even better, the new endeavour now employs more locals. Not just carrying Marty’s crew through slow times in the weed control season but paying wages and building skills year-round. It’s Kaipara ingenuity at work, exceeding standards and turning a crisis into opportunities.

Breast Cancer AWARENESS MONTH

Going pink for a great cause u by Andy Bryenton

This month sees New Zealand turn pink for a worthy cause once again, as the Breast Cancer Foundation of New Zealand hits the streets to raise funds for its work in the community and in medical research. Expect to see everything from pink products on your supermarket shelves to pink events in your town as the fight continues against this all too common illness. There are all kinds of options to support the movement, as the BCFNZ once again appeals to the public to support its charitable works, helping the mums, sisters, daughters, friends and partners who are battling breast cancer. This has been a disruptive year for all kinds of worthy causes, but nothing, not even Covid, has stopped the organisers of the pink ribbon appeal from innovating in 2020. Thus, as well as being able to donate personally online at www. breastcancerfoundation.org.nz, there’s also the chance to pitch in with a pink ribbon breakfast or join a pink ribbon walk. If there’s not a huge one near you, then the BCFNZ suggests you organise your own, in the school, workplace or with your friends or sports teammates. It’s a good excuse to get dressed up and get together, with friends and

family sponsoring a valuable community service. There’s even a pink caravan making the rounds of the country, and it will be stopping in Kaiwaka as part of its tour this Friday for free health check-ups. Another way to help is to check out the range of sponsored products popping up on local supermarket shelves, all of which contain within their retail price a donation to the cause. Many of these are delicious indulgences, so there’s no excuse not to give in to temptation and know that you’ve made the right choice. Since five Kiwi doctors banded together to start this fight back in 1990, medicine, detection science and care have all come a long way. The message this year is ‘nothing can stop that momentum’; so please give generously and help turn October pink! ¢

Two special soldiers u by Brian Eastwood

It is a long way from Dargaville to the Western Desert in North Africa. It is an even bigger step from working in a Northern Wairoa chain of general stores to commanding an infantry battalion in action during the second world war. That was the journey that Harry McElroy set out on when war was declared in 1939. An accountant at the head office of Wairoa Stores in Dargaville, he earned his first commission in Auckland Territorial Regiment in 1932. Ralph Harding, a farmer at Tangowahine, 14 kilometres east of Dargaville, was also an officer in a Territorial battalion. It is almost certain that Harding and McElroy were friends in Dargaville and the army. However, they were about to become close comrades at war for almost six years. McElroy and Harding were posted to join the mostly Kaipara lads of 21st Battalion as they began their overseas service in England during the dark days of 1940 when an invasion seemed likely. From there they were sent to take part in the difficult campaigns in Greece and Crete. After the evacuation of Crete when some older men were sent home to New Zealand, Ralph Harding was promoted to second in command of that battalion. Later, when Colonel Sam Allen was killed by an Italian prisoner in the desert, Harding took over. He went on to eventually be promoted to brigadier commanding the 5th Brigade.

In his book, Bringing Up The Rear, fellow officer Noel Gardiner wrote: ‘Harding had at one stage an outstanding second in command — a large dark, fearsome character that the ordinary braves referred to as ‘Black Tracker’ — a very determined bloke with a none-tooslow fuse. He seemed to pitch up in the most unusual places out in the desert, more often than not on his own. Apart from his excellent record, his war had been bluntly imprinted on the top of a large impressive forehead. I have seen the tin hat that denied the missile the deeper strike that would have sent him to his Valhalla. A truly awesome relic.’ The nickname probably came from his impressively large, black moustache and black hair. Now a major, McElroy was making a name as a good leader. In his book, Infantry Brigadier, Howard Kippenberger wrote of the desert battle at Ruweisat telling how ‘we met Harry McElroy with a party of twenty-eight men. They had discovered a wadi full of Italians, and McElroy lined up his party, evened up ammunition to five rounds each and charged. A number of Italians and Germans were killed, and 40 officers and 500 other ranks surrendered.’

McElroy was awarded an immediate DSO. When the 21st Battalion fought their way up Italy to the famous battle of Cassino, McElroy was in serious action again. The citation for his second DSO said, in part: “Lieutenant Colonel McElroy commanding 21st Battalion on the night of May 20/21 moved into Cassino and attacked towards the western part of town. Darkness, vast piles of rubble, deep bomb craters and stubbornly held strong points made operations difficult indeed in the extreme. After heavy fighting lasting into the following day and under constant heavy enemy fire, McElroy retained coolness and sound judgement. For a further six days, McElroy remained in Cassino directing operations of his battalion and other troops in the town. Conditions for command could scarcely have been worse. In the narrow area, the enemy concentrated extremely heavy artillery and mortar fire, and the slightest movement brought additional machine gun and sniper fire. McElroy’s disregard for his own personal safety and determination were a magnificent example to his men.” As Gardiner wrote, ‘Yes, there were few finer soldiers than Harry McElroy DSO and Bar.’

In the peaceful days of 2020, it is hard to imagine the courage and selfdiscipline needed by men such as Harry McElroy and Ralph Harding that enabled them to do the things they did. McElroy died peacefully in Auckland in 2001, age 91. Brigadier Ralph Harding MM, DSO lies in the family cemetery at Mt Wesley, Dargaville. ¢

Legendary name, fresh appreciation Dargaville’s Ocean Beach Takeaways is one of those smalltown Kiwi institutions which it’s almost unthinkable to see disappear. New management and a fresh philosophy on cooking ‘old-fashioned classics’ mean that this icon is here to stay. When Ian Cates and Julie Rusk began looking for a new enterprise to change up their lifestyle, the takeaway bar at the ‘top of the town’ was simply in the right place at the right time. Ian was driving trucks and was no stranger to stopping into roadside ‘tuckerbox’ stores to fuel up. Julie came from a catering and hospitality background, and the pair of them enjoyed living on a large lifestyle block in the north-west. Right now, they’re feeding 65 calves each morning before coming in to work. That means early starts, because everything possible here is prepared fresh and by hand. “We always got great food from Ocean Beach when we came into Dargaville for supplies,” says Ian. “We wanted to keep up the tradition of proper takeaways. Everything is hand-checked and quality controlled.” While he speaks, Ian is preparing a batch of fresh scallops and oysters for the day’s trade, so it’s easy to see that he’s suiting actions to words. He and Julie have had an interesting eight weeks as they have learned how to get

p Julie and Ian are focussing on quality

the most out of their kitchen and menu. Both agree that being focussed on quality and generous portions is a great drawcard. So, too, is changing up the hours of this popular eatery to cater to the industrial and manufacturing market at the north end of Dargaville, beginning at 9.30am. Standouts on the menu include their fish meals to go, hearty big burgers, and of course fresh cuts of schnapper, gurnard and hoki. Plans are afoot to expand into a range of homemade desserts for summer. As for the rest of the menu; it’s simple Kiwi fare done just right. With daylight savings here, give yourself a night off cooking and pay the new team a visit.

A kiwi legend on the track u by Andy Bryenton

October 4 marks the 28th anniversary of the death of a racing legend, Formula One champion and racing innovator Dennis ‘Denny’ Hulme. His legacy stretches from the streets of Monaco where he made his F1 debut in 1965 to ‘the mountain’ in Bathurst, Australia where he raced his last. The son of a fearless Victoria Cross recipient, Hulme was born in Motueka in 1936. He grew up to match his military sniper father in terms of cando attitude. Learning to drive the old farm truck by the age of six, as a teenager he raced MG convertibles in hill climbs and rallies, moving on up to Formula Two and hitting the European circuit with George Lawton. Despite his successes, the press ignored him while making a hero of fellow Kiwi Bruce McLaren. Denny didn’t feel any ill will toward his compatriot. Indeed, he’d go on to race for the McLaren team in later years. However, he was determined to

make his mark and stand in no other racer’s shadow. He raced at Le Mans for Fiat tuning house Abarth and signed on as a mechanic for Jack Brabham’s garage, where work on new, cutting edge Formula One cars was taking place. Soon he got the call he wanted; an offer of a place racing for Brabham. Monaco was his first race in the ‘big leagues’, and he acquitted himself well on the tight course, going on to post podium points four times that season. His boss Jack won the driver’s championship. 1967 was the year he’d clinch the title, a year when the new Lotus 49 was hot on

the heels of the Brabham cars. Hulme dominated at Monaco, then silenced his critics definitively by winning again at a completely different kind of track; the 114-corner Nurburgring. Eight podium finishes gained him the trophy. Hulme raced in the Can-Am series in North America too and went on to compete in many other Formula One Grand Prix seasons with the McLaren team. Luck, car problems and even an accident where his hands were badly burned all counted against him, however. Despite winning six Grand Prix in his career, his growing concerns about

driver safety and the deaths of many friends and rivals during the years saw him bow out gracefully in 1974. Denny Hulme died behind the wheel, though not in an accident. Racing at Bathurst in a BMW M3 in 1993, he suffered a heart attack and managed to pull off the track before he passed away from natural causes. He’s remembered thanks to racing trophies named for him, membership in no less than three separate motor racing halls of fame, and even a locally made supercar called the Hulme designed in New Zealand. ¢

AUTO & MARINE

Built from the ground up u by Andy Bryenton

The annual roll-out of new models doesn’t mean much for a lot of badges in the auto industry, who satisfy their customers with a bit of a facelift, some extra chrome and perhaps a slight bump in horsepower. Then, there are other machines in constant evolution, where there’s a lot more going on under the skin. One such is the Can-Am Defender HD8, which benefits from a constant loop of customer feedback pouring in from all across the world. That means advice from customers out in boggy mud, sun-baked deserts, steep forested hills and of course, the paddocks of New Zealand farms. All of these people want to get a hard day’s work done, and all of them need slightly different things, leading to the development of a machine, year-by-year, which can tackle them all. The latest iteration is a perfect example. It all starts with the chassis, as most motoring enthusiasts will tell you. A well-sorted chassis means less flex and shake. More rigidity means more precision when steering, especially in tough conditions. Can-Am even uses a different kind of steel alloy, with more hard metal in the mix, to ensure that their Defender range has solid underpinnings. This rigidity means safety when it comes to the cage that protects the driver and passenger as well. Think that

a bit of metallurgy can’t make much of a difference? Try filleting a schnapper with a cheap knife or hammering in poorly made nails, then multiply the advantage of real steel up to the size of an entire 4x4. Can-Am was right to invest in the science here. The next linkage in the chain is suspension, and the new HD8 deploys a set of torsional trailing A-arms with massive travel, linked up to serious shocks and tyres designed to provide a maximum footprint of grip. Power reaches these extremities via a clever power-steering system and a gearbox with four modes of traction and locking diffs. There’s a setting for mud, snow, grit, gravel, fording streams and lugging loads on the HD8’s wide, tie-down-equipped tray. Motive energy comes from a big, reliable Rotax engine with 50hp and 50 foot-pounds of torque; easy figures to remember. Not that mathematics will worry you when you’re out in the field. The end product, which combines all of these little advancements, wraps around to
