‘The Man from Matakohe’ reflects the life and times of Joseph Gordon Coates, the farm boy from Hukatere who went on to become a war hero and New Zealand’s first native-born Prime Minister. The exhibition has been more than two years in the making, and highlights commemorations to mark the 100th anniversary of World War 1. “We are thrilled to have a soldier of such stature in the Governor General opening a tribute to a war hero of the past,” said museum CEO, Lisa Tolich. “The exhibition opens on October 17 and re-tells Coates’s amazing story for a new generation of New Zealanders so they may understand the significant part he played in local, national and international events of his time,” she added. continued on page 3 …

Sin City - a Dame to Kill For Return to the gritty streets of Basin City, where every noir stereotype has a dark past and the mob, the cops and mercenary private eyes battle for control of the streets. This time Mickey Rourke and Bruce Willis step into Frank Miller’s twisted pulp-comic world to confront the tale of a deadly damsel putting everyone else in distress...

Postman Pat the Movie The beloved children’s character hits the big screen in a feature length spectacular. Pat enters a TV talent show, with uproarious results - and must face a challenge to his peaceful English village existence as fame brings its own problems!

Predestination It’s not easy being a temporal agent - policing the time-streams and protecting the future by literally altering the past. Now one agent must face the ultimate test - to hunt across all of time for a criminal seeking to escape justice and wreak a terrible revenge.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Adapted from the farm ore grim and violent graphic novel from the 1990s, this all-action thrill ride follows a quartet of martial-arts-trained mutants living in the sewer system and battling the terrorist troops of the evil Foot Clan, led by the cybernetic samurai known as the Shredder. Silly good fun for young and old!

Hip-hoperation For those who think hip hop is just for the young, this movie sets the record straight. And then scratches it a bit, as a troupe of Kiwi retirees go from the old folks’ home to the Vegas stage as the world’s oldest hip hop dance troupe. Life affirming, fun and with a fresh soundtrack to boot.

Guardians of the Galaxy A rag-tag band of interstellar thieves and assassins must save the galaxy from the clutches of an evil warlord. With cutting edge FX and cutting sarcasm, this is a comical rollercoaster ride of action which will appeal to fans of fellow Marvel flick ‘The Avengers’

Boxtrolls From the creative minds who brought us ‘Coraline’ and ‘Paranorman’ comes a Victorianera tale about an orphan boy trying to find his way in the world. This isn’t Charles Dickens, though - this lad was raised by a loveably gruesome family of subterranean trolls. When his adopted clan are threatened by evil pest exterminators, it’s up to him to save the day.

 Some lucky Dargaville kids had a ball last week in a school holiday programme run by Circus Kumarani. The programme for children five to 13 was held at the Dargaville Anglican Church and gave the children a chance to try out a range of circus tricks, including juggling, acrobatics tightrope walking and trapeze.

Planes - Fire and Rescue After the huge success of Planes (itself a spin off from the huge Cars franchise), Disney-Pixar has taken us back to the world of living machines, once again catching up with the spirited cropsprayer Dusty and his friends. This time the exracer is taking on a new challenge, joining the heroic Blade Ranger and his team to fight a huge forest fire

Housebound Another cracker of a Kiwi horror flick, in the tradition of Peter Jackson’s early work. Sentenced to house arrest, Kylie is forced to move in with her parents, who seem strangely cheerful about the prospect of their home being haunted. Winner of the coveted HR Giger prize at horror’s ‘Dead by Dawn’ festival.

Aunty and the Star People Jean Watson, recently turned 80 years old, is a Kiwi novelist who lives in Wellington and is well regarded in the literary community. But half a world away, in the poor region of Tamil Naidu in India, she is revered as ‘Aunty’, the lady who has given hope to a generation of orphans, by setting up homes for them and funding their school studies. A touching documentary, following the life of an everyday ‘saint’ from New Zealand.

 Farmer Rex Roadley makes his delivery during a special tournament of the Heatley Fours Memorial at the Maungaturoto Bowling Club that attracted 36 teams from surrounding clubs to celebrate 100 years of bowling in Maungaturoto. Kevin Robinson’s team of Les Miley, Keith Youngman and Wayne Wrack were the overall winners on the day but few teams went away empty-handed with 32 meat packs distributed among them.

Mr Robertson commended Mr Ruru and his staff for the work done to produce an early annual report. “We received a ‘clean bill of health’ from Deloitte auditors who noted a vast improvement in council’s financial position from the previous year. “This improvement was reflected in our annual report. Bells, Whistles and Rhymes for ORT It will be a spectacular evening of handbells, recorders, poetry and rhyme when Otamatea Repertory Theatre hosts something of a different kind. Bells, Whistles and Rhymes will feature a variety of ORT artists including Ray Palmer, who taught music in Dargaville for many years. Handbells have grown into a passion for Ray and he now has one of the largest sets of handbells in New Zealand. The entire 60 bell, five-octave set is worth $30,000. “It is just spectacular,” says Ray. “And very sweet when they are all played.

Handbell ringing is strong overseas and mostly associated with churches but we play a much more modern repertoire, like show tunes and happy medleys for performances. The bells are more difficult than you first think and involve a lot of aural skills, including reading the music as a score. “The big bells are very heavy and the small bells are tiny, so you can hold four at a time — audiences are always spellbound with the concerts.” Bells, Whistles and Rhymes is a one-off show on October 11 at the

African drumming on the beat this weekend  by Colin Patterson

If you want to learn African drumming but have never had the chance that might change this weekend, October 10 to 12. A weekend workshop at Dargaville intermediate School will offer expert tuition on the techniques and drumming and keeping to a beat. Organiser Josie Scott says the workshop runs from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon and will conclude with a public performance. It will be conducted by Simon Fraser from Melbourne who has run a number of past workshops in Dargaville. Ms Scott says the workshop caters for all levels of proficiency from beginner to expert. “Simon’s a very experienced

teacher. He’s got a nice simple rhythm for new drummers, while also being able to challenge more experienced drummers.” She says people should bring their own drums, although drums are available for hire for those who do not have their own. Places for the workshop are still available. The cost is $50 for the weekend, or you can attend individual sessions at a cost of $15. Anyone interested in taking part should contact Ms Scott on 021 022 38621 or email josie.scott@xtra.co.nz. 

 by Joanne Speechly

BNZ Dargaville is hosting a BBQ this Friday, October 10, to help ‘Team Minionators’ raise money for charity. Local Mini enthusiast Graeme Powdrell and his co-driver Craig Nash are taking part in the Pork Pie Mini Run next Easter and BNZ Dargaville are doing their little bit to help. Children’s charity, KidsCan, are the benefactors of the 2015 run, which will see 60 Minis journey from Kaitaia to Invercargill over six days and seven nights, for the fourth running of the bi-annual fundraiser. “BNZ Dargaville thought we could do a little bit extra to help Graeme raise funds, so we’re having a BBQ this Friday, from 11am until 2pm,” said BNZ customer service consultant Elizabeth Tipene. “For a gold coin donation, there will also be an opportunity to have a photo with the mini from midday. The car’s all kitted out for KidsCan now, so it looks the part.”

BNZ and ASB banks are also selling raffle tickets for a giant teddy bear, donated by The Warehouse. KidsCan supports the education of thousands of children at 428 low decile schools nationwide, including eight schools in the Kaipara region. Graeme and Craig will pay the Mini Run entry fee and associated travel costs. All money they raise goes to KidsCan. BE THE SOBER D FOR A NIGHT

Trash and Treasure is now on at Maungaturoto’s Centennial Hall. The major fundraiser for Otamatea St John Ambulance first began 32 years ago when the committee purchased the ambulance station and needed a way to raise money. “It has run every year since then and it was held at the station for a number of years until it outgrew that facility,” says secretary, Eileen Parsons. “It is a positive way to involve all in the community and most people who visit can get a bargain.” The proceeds from the Trash and Treasure have been used in a variety of ways to benefit the community. “Last year we were able to purchase four AEDs, a defibrillator that any member of the public can use, and two of these have been placed in Kaiwaka.

Two will be placed in Maungaturoto businesses in the near future. “We have also been able to support our Cadets with the purchase of uniforms and our volunteers by way of providing them with up-todate equipment. “Some of this year’s proceeds will be used to purchase burn kits for both ambulances.” Trash and Treasure will include a wide variety of second-hand goods, as well as fresh produce, preserves and baking. It is open 9am to 5pm until Friday. “This is our major fundraiser for the year, so please support us if you can.” For further information contact Eileen on 021 142 0357 or email b.parsons@xtra.co.nz.

And that’s pretty evident with the amount of maintenance work going on in the Whangarei and Kaipara areas. We’ve just completed the installation of a dedicated transformer for the new K-Mart in the Okara Shopping Centre. The installation of metrix repeaters for the aerials used in reading the new smart meters is now complete. There are currently 87 repeaters on our network poles, and as more smart meters are installed, you may see more on our poles. We’ve replaced approximately five kilometres of wire on our 11kV feeder line in the Whangarei CBD. The maintenance work also included the replacement of poles and cross arms as they are reaching the end of their 50 year life span. Crews are working hard on roadside 11kV feeder maintenance in Whangarei Heads, Pipiwai and Ruawai. Out at the Marsden Point Oil Refinery, we’ve just finished the underground cable installation for the new expansion going on and are now in the cable jointing stage. Other crews are out at One Tree Point working on more network maintenance 11kV pole replacements and 400 volt supply cable from poles to residential homes. We’re also seeing a slight increase in the amount of private and developer generated service work with new subdivisions going up in Tikipunga, Portland and Ocean Beach - as well as a scattering of new builds throughout the Network area. Did you know that we also have a ‘trial line’? Yes we do and it’s located at Glinks Gully, where some of the harshest atmospheric conditions can be found. The line is only a few hundred metres long and yes, it does provide electricity to a few houses, but it’s mainly used to trial new equipment such as insulators, bolts, wire, etc. The testing phase can be anywhere from a couple of months to a couple of years, and there are always three different suppliers of the same gear being tested at once. This gives a very good idea of which equipment can withstand the elements and which cannot. This then determines what is used on the rest of the network. By next month’s column, the Western Hills and Selwyn Avenue works will be complete. This project ties in the Maunu Road and Central Ave refurbishments, where all the overhead lines have been placed underground.

Thanks to the hard work of the Dargaville Arts Association, an exhibition of 63 works is on display at Reyburn House on Whangarei’s Town Basin. Pat Mortensen from the association says the exhibition features paintings, jewellery, textiles, woodwork, sculpture and ceramics from 16 of the Dargaville Arts Association’s best and wellknown artists. The exhibition had its gala opening last Friday with around 40 people present. Mrs Mortensen says an

Our delicate dairy economy A drop in dairy prices of 48% from February this year is now impacting on the New Zealand economy, with economists now predicting Fonterra’s $5.30 payout prediction will drop again to $4.80 if there is not a lift in product values by March of next year. The Northland regional economy, with a drop of $3.70 per kilogram of milk solids would face a disastrous shortfall of in excess of $370 million. It has been said that for every dollar a dairy farmer receives, it adds three times more value by the time it goes through the community. How the experts work that out, I don’t know, but if it is true there would be an impact in the Northland region of $1 billion. I attended a Fonterra farmer meeting held in Northland this week and the big surprise to me was the small number of suppliers who attended the meeting, in light of the decline of dairy farmer fortunes. It was a pity because in spite of all the bad news caused by the volatility in the world markets, I believe Fonterra is doing a lot of positive things to increase

its market share throughout the world, avoiding a major reliance solely on the Chinese market. Joint ventures in Europe, the Americas, Asia and Australia are turning Fonterra, since its formation from being an $11 billion earner to a $22 billion earner, making it, I believe, the cornerstone of the New Zealand economy. Some farmers at the meeting expressed their extreme concern at Fonterra continuing to undertake huge costly development programmes overseas when dairy farmer payouts are now suffering a serious decline. Farmers expressed criticism at Fonterra spending some $23 million in their new Farm Source development which will include the restructuring of its RD1 stores throughout New Zealand.

Fonterra director Malcolm Bailey in explaining this development said that this Farm Source development would mean better buying power for Fonterra shareholders and suppliers, including greater fuel and electricity savings and discounts on purchases. He explained that the current market volatility was caused by the European and the United States’ ban on exports to Russia and this was a great concern because Russia is the European community’s biggest purchaser of dairy products. Now this European product can be diverted to other world markets, putting pressure on Fonterra’s market share. There is also currently a weak demand for dairy products from China. While we are mindful of the current concerns, we know the industry has never been without financial risk or market fluctuations. It is important that we dairy farmers support Fonterra’s farmer co-operative ownership structure and maintain the initiative and enterprise that is required to achieve the outcomes we all desire. 

Horse sports at Pouto  by Joanne Speechly

There’s an equestrian date every year at Labour Weekend when a little bit of the wild west comes to town at Pouto. Now in its fifth year, Pouto Horse Sports once revolved around the kids. “It was their practice for the rodeo circuit but now it has a life of its own,” says Kath Nathan, whose family originated the event. Kath and husband Steve have a dry stock unit on land bordering Lake

and a practical lesson in commerce. “He liked the whole idea of creating things for his kids to do at home so they don’t have to go anywhere,” says Kath. Morgana, now 20, is studying sport and recreation in Whangarei but still competes and will be heavily involved with her family’s annual horse sports event. She credits Blue, her ‘bush’ horse, as one of the reasons for her continued success. Patariki is 17 and works in forestry. A rookie, he prefers to compete in the rough stock categories but still trains horses alongside Morgana.

He will also be central to this year’s horse sports preparations. “We had a really great turnout in 2013, so we’re hoping for more of the same this year” said Kath. “The weekend has a great family atmosphere, people are friendly and helpful, and if you don’t know someone, you at least know of them. “We put on meals for competitors and volunteers and there is camping available. “People usually start arriving Friday afternoon, as registration is 8.30am Saturday.” 

New farming initiative  by Joanne Speechly

A new Fonterra initiative aims to forge closer links between the dairy cooperative and its 11,000 farmer suppliers. Farm Source combines service, support, rewards, digital technology and financial options for farmers, together with local hubs to support the major dairying regions. Chairman John Wilson said it’s about taking its relationship with farmers to a new level. “We have been talking to our farmers about what we can do to further support them and their businesses, and we challenged ourselves to come up with ways we could get in behind them. Cooperatives have always been about unity and collective strength and we have a lot of both.” CEO Theo Spierings said Farm Source is much stronger than the sum of its parts. “Ultimately, we see Farm Source as setting the benchmark when it comes to supporting farmers and providing exclusive benefits beyond the Milk Price.

It’s about working together to grow and succeed and reach our ambition of global relevance.” Launched in Methven last week, the Farm Source package includes: • Seventy-one Farm Source hubs. • Farm Store rewards to bring down the cost of farm supplies and services. • Farm Store “dollars” to return farmers a share of profits. • In-store and online farm supplies. • Farm Source digital for farmers

to manage their business with the cooperative. • Financial tools for managing shares, capital and business. Farmers of New Zealand operations director Bill Guest said Farm Source is a lot bigger than a rebrand of Fonterra’s existing network of RD1 stores. “This is about shareholder pride and the new clean colours emphasise the overall Fonterra brand, which is seriously lacking in the current stores. “Farm Source is a rewards programme for farmers and it offers some significant financial tools to help them do business better, using the provincial football team colours to identify each region is a particularly clever idea.” 
