Council seeks $27.8 million funding The ministry says eight applications have been received for Kaipara funding, but details of pending projects are not released before decisions are made. Meanwhile, Northland MP Matt King has described the Tegel decision as “politically motivated and a slap in the face for regional development in Kaipara. It would have provided jobs in Northland and potentially a major benefit to the local economy.” It was another example of Kaipara being put “on the back burner” by the coalition government. “For all their talk about investment in Northland, very little of it has come into Kaipara.”  Matt King, Northland MP Mayor Smith says the OIO decision “when added to the absence encouraging other places, and Kaipara of any approved PGF projects in Kaipara misses out again. “Kaipara remains open for business so far, make an unhappy Kaipara investment trend in 2018.” but not just any business, the first He adds “while there’s a palpable idea that comes along or businesses sense of relief in the community now other places don’t want. Plain sailing for KDC  by Jill Dickie

According to district mayor, Dr Jason Smith, after nearly a decade of a rocking boat, it seems that conditions with the Kaipara District Council will be ‘more plain sailing and rapidly progressing towards being ship-shape’. The council annual report highlights steady and continuing debt reduction, community development and setting plans in motion for the next decade through the future Long Term Plan. The year saw consistently high numbers of building development, with a population growth of 2.4%, and resource consents have risen from 263 in 2015 to 508 in 2018. A big part of council’s yearly spend included capital projects, such as roading, water main renewals, wastewater reticulation extensions, and community projects such as picnic tables, shade sails and new paths along the Northern Wairoa River at the Dargaville waterfront. “This annual report charts the end of a turnaround in fortunes for Kaipara District Council. “It also signals the start of a new, more stable and healthy time filled with all the abundant well-being promise of ‘Kaipara te oranganui’. This is how you chart our fresh start,” said Mayor Smith. “Council’s audit report states a particular highlight from a financial perspective is the level of external

In a recently released documentary about five female New Zealand shearers working in a male-dominated industry, Ruawai local, Hazel Wood, found the experience of filming terrifying at times. The film is named She Shears and introduces two world record holders, Jills Angus Burney and Emily Welch, and three in the making — Hazel Wood, Catherine Mullooly and Pagan Karauria — as they head for black-shirt glory at the Golden Shears in Masterton. “Being involved in the film has definitely been a great experience. At times it was challenging, having a camera shadowing me, and also a bit terrifying getting out of my comfort zone, but I am glad I got to be a part of this awesome film,” said Hazel. Hazel currently shears 150 sheep in a day and aspires to double that. “In the past, it’s  Ruawai-based shearer, Hazel Wood, one of the stars of been seen as a man’s job, so the She Shears documentary this film has given women the chance to be recognised. ADVERTORIAL

A personal confession Award-winning actor and writer, Rob Mokaraka, came close to losing his life in 2009, after attempting suicide and being shot by police. No one knew he had been silently dealing with depression, even himself, and years of guilt, shame and failure culminated in a shocking storm of accumulated emotions. Rob lived for years in a culture that shunned acknowledgement of any mental health challenges — now he wants to share his story to shock others into opening up about their own problems. “The thing about depression which drives people to suicide, is it’s not sexist, it’s not racist, it doesn’t care how much money you’ve got — it will take you if you don’t go and deal with it,” says Rob. As Rob’s internal storm evolved and erupted, he set in motion a plan to end his life, was shot in the chest and found a release of his troubles in hospital when a therapist said, “what you did is not normal, but what you have is normal. You have depression.” He realised that internalising his pain wasn’t the answer and began writing, then with help from mental health advocate, Mike King and director, Erana Daniels he gradually built a story, which will be presented at 3pm on Thursday, October 11. Rob will share his story in a project he named Shot Bro – Confessions of a Depressed Bullet, at the Dargaville Town Hall. Members of the community are invited to attend the free event. It is described as a confronting watch, though each performance is followed by a forum and the sharing of food to help everyone to process and share.

“The plain truth is that I should have died, no-one would have known why and you’d have had another Maori actor playing me in the movie. It’s been huge for me, I now know, really know, that you have to walk the truth to teach the truth. It’s very real to me and by helping others — in any way I can — I’m really helping myself.”

Wellsford firemen celebrated

 by Jill Dickie

 by Jill Dickie

The Northland Rescue Helicopter service is preparing to celebrate 30 years in the air as the 2018 fundraising appeal begins. Until the end of November, the service will be involved in numerous activities throughout the Kaipara and other districts, to pay tribute to the thousands of lives involved since the first flight on November 17, 1988.

It was ‘celebrations all round’ recently when members of the Wellsford Volunteer Fire Brigade met to acknowledge longserving volunteers, at a medal ceremony.

Last year $307,000 was raised, and the aim is to raise a similar amount this year due to the increasing operational costs facing the air ambulance service. Northland electricity lines companies, Northpower and Top Energy, will contribute $100,000 and $50,000 respectively to the cause, along with managing the appeal campaign. Northland Rescue Helicopter chairman, Paul Ahlers, says that continued local business  Northland Rescue Helicopter pilot, Steve Couchman, support is crucial as the has been with the service 14 years, and in that time has transported more than 1,000 patients service is only partially funded by the government. “Northpower and Top Energy have the Northland Regional Council — that been sponsoring us since day one backing has been a substantial boost and we could not have got this service to helping us meet our annual shortfall off the ground without them. Their of costs and key to us being able to support has been critical to us — just afford to upgrade our helicopter fleet.” The Northland Rescue Helicopter as support from other businesses and Service has flown more than 20,000 members of the public has been over missions since 1988 and has been three decades,” said Mr Ahlers. “We are also really appreciative of instrumental in saving thousands the ongoing support we receive from of lives. 

Fourteen members were recipients of certificates, bars and medals for service ranging from three years to thirty-three years, recognising their commitment to the community. One recipient, Reg Phillips, also received a Life Honorary medal for 15 years’ service with the brigade. In recognition of the significant contribution and support from friends and family members, the elite Gold Star Long Service awards and Life Honorary medals are presented to members who have served more than 25 years in the fire service. Three of these special awards were presented at the honours evening. Peter Bowmar carried on the tradition

of his father Jim, and brother Trevor, who have previously received gold star awards. He was joined by Kerry Tupp and Harendra Sundar. “I guess it is an achievement and a pleasure working beside them all over the years, and now with my son and daughter — watching them mature through training and skills gained with life experiences. It is a big family culture, which helps in all directions,” said Trevor Bowmar. In total, Wellsford has had 23 gold stars presented in its history. These medals presented were numbered 7809, 7810, 7811, which is the total number of gold star medals handed out since 1887. 

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Regarding the Tegel decision: I called this one two months ago. I suspect that the Tegel board knew all along that when the deal with Bounty Fresh in the Philippines went to 100%, all previous Tegel contracts and business deals would collapse, and that’s why they delayed commissioner hearings at the end of July, as they wanted to wait until the other shoe dropped (why come to Dargaville and waste time on hearing that would be void?). Lost jobs are just nonsense National Party line fantasy as there

were never going to be any jobs for Kaipara. After all, if it were your private company, would you hire workers from your clan, your family, your tribe or some lads from Dargaville that were not loyal to you and the family? Just business — nothing personal. Bounty will now take ALL the New Zealand Tegel business profits back to the family in Manila. The mayor thinks we missing out on investment. This is not investment — this is rape. Dr DS Linthicum

On behalf of the Board of Sportsville Dargaville, I would like to thank the people of the Northern Wairoa that joined us on Saturday, September 29, to open Sportsville. We were thrilled with the turnout — to see children playing on the courts all day, and since, is very satisfying. A very small group of volunteers have worked tirelessly through some pretty bleak times for five and a half years to create this wonderful asset for the community. This belongs to the community, and we invite you all to use it and enjoy it. It was a great honour to have the Minister of Sport and Recreation join us and open the facility alongside

some other well-known people, but the citizens of the Northern Wairoa were equally important. I would also like to thank the board that has made this happen — Bronwyn Williamson, Kelly Bryers, Peter Harding, Richard Alspach, Alan Russek and Ray Dixon. Also Roxanne Kelly and Brent Eastwood from Sport Northland who attend meetings and have made equal contributions. We only ask three things of the community — use it, enjoy it and treat it as you would your home. Chris Biddles Chairman Sportsville Dargaville

Establishing connections  by Jill Dickie

In a newly created position by the Dargaville Community Development Board, local resident Janeen Hunter has been employed as events facilitator. Her main role is to promote community participation and encourage greater numbers of visitors to Dargaville and districts. It is expected Janeen will focus on significant events which draw visitors to the area. This focus should potentially increase retail and food outlet spending, including visitors seeking overnight accommodation, which in turn will develop business growth and tourism. Event organisers are encouraged to contact Janeen who can provide support and guidance, assist in the planning and help establish beneficial connections. “I’m looking forward to connecting people and making their events a success,” she said. Settlers Day at the museum

 by Jill Dickie

Hundreds of people turned out for the annual Settlers Day at The Kauri Museum last Saturday to enjoy the many displays and presentations. The Revolution of Industry themed event provided visitors an opportunity to view demonstrations such as gum polishing or enjoy a cup of billy tea made over an outdoor fire. Some chatted with

specialists about the development of their tools of trade, while others enjoyed the musical entertainment, food and stalls, as well as the usual museum display areas. The fun family atmosphere was reportedly filled with laughter as both adults and children enjoyed spotting the models come to life. 

 Family groups enjoyed resting on the lawn with a child-sized pony

 Many people stopped to admire the carefully polished vintage cars outside the museum entrance

 A large selection of fresh cut flowers was being made into tussie-mussies for visitors

Hospice Kaiparas popular Pennies for Heaven shop is closing — but only for a few short weeks to enable renovations to be made. During the revamp stage they will be open just two doors further along Victoria Street and will return to their premises early in November.

In seeking a future personal challenge Otamatea High School prefect, Quintin Brown is heading to Marlborough Sounds in January to complete a three-week long development course at Outward Bound.

Hospice Kaipara Incorporated chair, Dale Schick, says that apart from being a popular community asset, the shop provides a vital source of funding for additional staffing, equipment and services for clients — negating the need for multiple cake stalls and raffles. “Kaipara people love the chance to buy pre-loved goods for reasonable prices, and the revamp will mean we can display these in a fresh and clean, upgraded store,” said Mrs Schick. The present shop will close on October 9, and the pop-up shop will open on October 10 selling new season clothing and books, and Mrs Schick apologises for any inconvenience. The trip involves a substantial financial investment, and he is beginning a fundraising campaign on October 13 with a car wash, sausage sizzle and baking stall, to be held in Kaiwaka outside the Three Furlongs Bar and Grill from 9am. With family support on the day, Quintin hopes to raise a portion of the $4,800 required, he has further raffles and neighbourhood work to arrange, and would also accept any further assistance or ideas on fundraising and sponsorship from the local community. In taking the 21-day trip, he will meet new friends and share a journey of self-understanding, though testing personal boundaries and taking part in several physical challenges. “I hope to better my social skills, and prepare myself for the future as next year is my last year at school,” said Quintin. FULLY QUALIFIED

Building toward a better future  by Andy Bryenton

The foundations of the lifestyle we enjoy rest on the abilities of those who make it all possible. Without qualified tradespeople to provide us with stable and comfortable homes outfitted with the best in modern conveniences, we’d still literally be in the dark ages. So it’s a good thing that our local professionals have learned the array of skills they bring to the Kaipara — and that so many of them are passing this knowledge on to a new generation. While academic excellence and university education are undoubtedly important, so too is the time-honoured apprenticeship method of learning a trade. In fact, when Oxford University, the first great seat of learning in Britain was built in 1096, those who constructed its first halls were stonemasons, carpenters and smiths trained under the apprenticeship programmes of the great medieval guilds. Today, apprenticeships are far more modern, but each one comprises both a theory component and a whole lot of learning ‘hands-on’, out in the field with established professionals. It means two things — not just a guarantee that there will be electricians, plumbers, builders, mechanics, engineers and more available to tackle the problems of the future, but also that those who currently answer the call when we need the help of a pro have learned

their craft just as comprehensively as those in other professions. Perhaps one could say more so, in some cases — a tertiary diploma can take far less time to earn than the title of a qualified tradesperson. It takes even more years of experience and expertise to then pass on those abilities. As another school year turns toward exam time, many of our brightest young people will be making decisions about their future careers. That’s why it’s positive to acknowledge at this time that some of the best education providers we know are actually the business owners in our neighbourhoods, providing apprenticeship and learning opportunities for the next generation. At this busy time for building, renovation and other practical tasks, it’s a reminder to only rely on those with the right qualifications to get the job done right. 

When it comes to flooring, there’s a whole lot of work that goes on under the surface, preparing a floor that will last the test of time. Far from being a simple task which finishes off a successful build or renovation, flooring demands precision and skill, abilities and knowledge built up over a rigorous three year apprenticeship. Munns Flooring Xtra — Dargaville’s local flooring xperts — are proud to be part of training new tradespeople in this field. With a shortage of skilled workers across all the building disciplines, from the foundations to the rooftop, making sure that there is a new generation to carry on the multi-generational work of this well-respected company is paramount. That is why the graduation of flooring trainee Jarod to full tradesman status in late 2016 was a milestone for the Munn’s team. Now with Leighton joining the crew, there’s even more scope for this hard-earned knowledge to be passed on to new hands in the trade. That’s how Munns Flooring Xtra are preparing for the future — a future in which expert flooring advice and installation will remain just a phone call away.

FULLY QUALIFIED

The right tools for the task  by Andy Bryenton

Some jobs are just too big for the kind of equipment that’s made for around the house. When it comes to the demands of springtime in the countryside, tools which have been designed for the pocket-handkerchief lawns and diminutive DIY tasks of a city section might not make the grade. Take water blasters, for a simple example. A small, electric powered unit is fine when the nearest plug socket is mere metres away, and the biggest task asked of the machine is to wash the road grit off a commuter hatchback. Scale that up to sluicing the mud off a 200 horsepower tractor prior to some in-the-field maintenance with the clock ticking, and you’ll need every component improved — a petrol engine, double the PSI of water pressure on tap, more litres a minute throughput and sturdier fittings and hoses to manage the strain. Similarly, a lawn mower for a lifestyle block is inevitably going to be bigger than the push mower used on the old Kiwi quarter-acre. With this upscale, it’s not just a consideration of mowing width, power, extra cup holders and style, however. It’s all about the terrain you’ll tackle, ease of operation and safety in the field. The very same considerations scale up when you must switch out a tiny garden shredder for a serious wood

STIHL CHAINSAW MS 250 16” WOODBOSS BEST PRICE EVER!

chipper with its added horsepower and the ability to chomp through tree limbs. Or even when trading in the old vacuum cleaner, you use in the shed for a proper wet and dry unit, which can be of great use during renovations. Even the many graduated sizes of chainsaw and brush cutter are designed on a spectrum with urban firewood management on one end and lumberfelling power on the other. The biggest question, of course, is how to choose. Go too small, and you’ll waste time, put wear and tear on components, and inevitably waste money. Go too large or get the wrong fit and it’s a waste right away, with the added problem that the very biggest tool for the job may be unwieldy to use for long periods of time. As every situation is different — from steeply sloping farm paddocks to lifestyle blocks to beachfront lawns — the only answer is to take advantage of the experience of your local outdoor

Getting the most out of a maize crop takes careful preparation — not just good timing and the good graces of Mother Nature. From paddock selection, right through to harvest and feed out, the best results can only be achieved by those with the experience to get the balance right. Soil fertility is a primary key, as it’s the action, which occurs under the soil and out of view that ultimately dictates a healthy start and a strong finish from each plant. Adding effluent to your maize paddocks can lower your fertiliser inputs, and as most pond systems are due for their spring clean-out, this is a prime example of serendipitous timing in action. Kill two birds with the proverbial one stone and give your crop a soil fertility boost. The choice to direct drill on sandy or loam soils to retain soil moisture can be an option, but most heavy soil paddocks after a wet winter will need cultivation. This time-honoured springtime tradition had seen farmers turning the earth for aeration since long before new aeration existed, well into the ancestral times of the horse and plough. Modern methods, of course, are mechanised, efficient and much faster! There are now four options at maize planting — all of which take into account the conditions of the soil. First comes the seed rate — selected according to the paddocks’ potential. High fertility means a higher seed rate, lower fertility or drought-prone areas call for a lower seed rate. Liquid injection allows the choice of adding microbial inoculant into the seed trench to boost root development. The diverse range of bacteria and fungi

unlock minerals that are locked up in the soil. Starter Fertiliser can be placed close to the seed, ready for the plants’ roots to tap into on day 14 of their growth cycle. Side dressing can be done at the same time as planting thanks to the

FA R M I N G ADVERTORIAL

Hard working homecoming by Andy Bryenton

As a very busy spring season gets underway in the rural heartland of the Kaipara, many people’s biggest wish is that there’s someone on call to help them with jobs that take more than just manpower. Our fleet of local excavator operators are nothing if not busy this time of year, and so the addition of a skilled new contractor is cause for celebration. What’s even better is that Travis LeNoel of LeNoel Contracting is a local man who’s returned to the region, bringing hardearned abilities and experience with him from the construction sites of Australia. After a two-year tenure abroad, working with underground natural gas operations in Perth, the young operator has returned to the town where he grew up. He’s begun a new business, putting all those skills to work right here. Armed with a powerful CAT excavator and its veritable ‘swiss army knife’ selection of attachments, alongside a handy tipper truck to move materials, LeNoel Contracting is off to a flying start. Farmers — and anyone who needs to build or develop rural land — know that having the strong arm of an excavator on

hand makes jobs like drain clearance and water table work, site prep and trenching a breeze. Add on a powerful auger, and it’s possible to dig in posts or help raise sheds and barns. A ‘dozer blade can clear driveways and help destroy potholes. Moreover, a big hydraulic ‘thumb’ can grip even mighty boulders and place them with precision. After putting in the years overseas, Travis is ready and willing to deploy his heavy equipment — and experience — to help out on Kaipara properties of all kinds. Between him, his truck and his big yellow CAT with its multiple attachments, there’s pretty much no job too big or small that he can’t chop down to size. It seems that, just like in so many rugby tests, Australia’s loss means a big win for the locals!
