p The last Friday of August heralded the beginning of spring in more ways than one. With daffodils blooming all over, it was time to gather together to raise money for a very worthy cause; the New Zealand Cancer Society’s annual appeal. ANZ Bank held its popular yearly raffle with support from the business community, while collectors handed out daffodil pins and rattled the cans for donations. A barbecue and cake stall helped boost the coffers with some fine cooking and baking by local ‘good sorts’ on the grill and behind the sweet treats.

Measles outbreak travel warning Of these cases “three were children less than 15 months of age and too young to be immunised, two children were not immunised on medical advice, and eight were old enough to be immunised but weren’t.” Around one in 10 Northland children and one in four teenagers haven’t had a vaccination and there is now an outreach service for homes as well as schools. Medical centres in Kaipara all offer Measles Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccinations while there is also a free drop-in clinic on Commerce St in Whangarei between 8.30am to 4pm on Tuesday and Thursday. No appointment is needed. “Northland immunisation service focus is ensuring equity,“ said DHB service manager, Kathryn Bowmar. “The outreach service is focussed on supporting families and whanau that have difficulty accessing healthcare to access vaccinations.” Many people living in Northland regularly travel to Auckland, which means their chances of being exposed are high. “Vaccination is our best protection,” said Medical Officer of Health Dr Catherine Jackson. It has been estimated to prevent recurrent outbreaks of measles, 90

per cent of the population must be immune. To reach this level, 95 per cent of people must have had at least one MMR vaccination. Northland’s immunisation rate is a concern because it is not high enough to limit the spread of measles from person to person and the impending school holidays and the added challenge of several large inter-school competitions happening during the next week or two increases the risk of more cases. Travelling and large gatherings are an ideal virus breeding ground. “Individuals or their family members, who have symptoms suggestive of measles should immediately seek advice from a doctor, and avoid contact with young children. However, it is recommended that they call their doctor instead of visiting them to allow them to make arrangements to assess you safely and without infecting others.” “If you are found to be in contact with a case of measles (and not immune) you will need to stay away from work, school or public places for up to 14 days, to help prevent putting other people at risk.” For more information health.govt.nz/ your-health/conditions-and-treatments/ diseases-and-illnesses/measles, call Healthline on 0800 611 116. ¢

Rubbish tip an election issue u by Paul Campbell

The proposed Auckland landfill for the Dome Valley and perceived pollution danger to the wider Kaipara Harbour has become an Auckland mayoral election issue. Fight the Tip member, Michelle Carmichael, and supporters took their campaign to candidates’ meetings to gather support against the plan, which is currently awaiting resource consent.. It is feared the tip poses a huge danger of pollution to the harbour and immediate environment. At a Wellsford meeting, Michelle addressed candidates. “The two mayoralty candidates, Craig Lord and p Michelle Carmichael addressed a Wellsford Peter Vaughan, declared candidates’ meeting landfills, are outdated and confirmed that if elected they’d stop international companies keen to build the Dome Valley landfill and propose such a plant. a waste-to-energy plant,” she said. “A waste-to-energy plant is a fantastic Now Auckland mayoral candidate idea. We incinerate, we recycle, we stop John Tamihere says he will also seek the need to build more landfills, and it to bring the waste management plan would nullify the ridiculous idea for the to Auckland. Learning day a success Young and old alike were represented at Dargaville’s recent Adult Learning gala, hosted by Te Roroa on September 4 as part of nationwide celebrations of both those who volunteer to help their fellow citizens upskill, and those who commit to learning after their school years are past.

Aside from the fun, there was a serious message to take away, according to the many adult education staff who participated in the day. “Challenge yourself, and you will be surprised at what you can achieve. Learning is something that doesn’t end after school!”

Voices of Tamariki Everywhere is the name of a music and dance event for the whole family, with a message of hope for both young people and their parents. After twelve years in New Zealand, Teeter Hang-Ups have now established a long term track record with thousands of people throughout New Zealand. Inversion New Zealand was started by Dave and Nancy Hare, Dave had suffered over twenty years of back pain from degenerated discs and had basically given up and decided to just live with it. To him surgery was never an option as long as he still could walk, there was hope. “While on an overseas trip I discovered the Teeter Hang-Ups for the first time, when I tried it, the pain completely disappeared and I was pain free for about 30 minutes. I never would have believed it would fix me completely as specialists had told me it was irreversible, but I now knew I had a place to go every time I wanted some welcome relief. To my surprise the more I used the table the longer the pain stayed away, until after nearly three months the pain was completely gone, after spending large amounts of money on everything I could find I finally had found something that worked and it was something I had never heard of sorting it out for me in a very short period of time.

Inversion NZ Ltd 0800 62 62 83 www.inversionnz.co.nz

Once I was sure it really worked I decided to introduce Teeter into New Zealand to help spread awareness of the one thing that truly helped me. Over the years I have helped tens of thousands of people in New Zealand get some serious relief and have seen results in not only backs, but necks, hips, knees, posture, circulation and lots more.

Inversion helps to: • Relieve Back Pain • Relieve Neck Pain • Relieve Muscle Tension • Stimulate Blood And Lymph Flow • Improve Posture • Increase Flexibility

The results from what inversion does is nothing short of miraculous in areas we never thought possible, I believe there is a place for these in every single home regardless of if you have back issues or not. We have introduced them into a number of schools which are using them for their special needs children, the blood to the brain helps these kids and the results are excellent. What this means for the aging population is that it helps maintain the health of the brain as we all get older. I would not have believed the results had I not tried it for myself, and I would still be suffering to this day. This is why we travel the country showing people and letting them see for themselves how great it is and how life can be once you’re pain free again.”

IT IS PURE LOGIC AS TO HOW THE TEETER TABLE WORKS

Discs:

It uses gravity to apply traction, the traction gently opens the discs and as they open up they create suction, this suction draws fluid from the surrounding tissue back into the discs, re-hydrating them. This is the key! Discs do not have their own blood supply, they rely on trans fer of fluid from the surrounding tissue to keep them healthy and hydrated and over the years as discs get thinner with age, they lose the ability to take on fluid (just like squeezing a sponge) and they start to de-hydrate.

Posture: Poor

posture is one of the major cases of pain and is a major contributor to the deterioration of the body with age. A difference in leg length causes most of the hip and knee issues, as they continue to place uneven loads on the joints; similar to the wheels out of alignment on your car. Trying to correct posture is extremely difficult due to muscle memory, as it constantly pulls the muscles back to where they were. At a level of 40 degrees or more on the Teeter, the muscle groups open up and eventually come back into alignment, using the table daily, does not allow the muscle memory to pull them back out of alignment and slowly the muscles start to lose their memory and go with the flow, allowing the body to come back into correct posture. Then using the table once a day will ensure it is kept there.

De-Hydrated discs are less flexible, they are harder, more prone to injury, they interfere with nerve roots creating pain and ultimately the de-hydration causes degen eration. The Teeter Inversion table slowly and gently brings the hydration back into the discs, plumping them up. It separates the nerve roots far more effectively and This is pure logic, if a machine is out of returns quality of life

Muscles: A lot of pain is muscular, when

muscles are stressed they become tight which restricts the flow of blood and lymph through the muscles so toxins build up, Co2 and Lactic Acid. Traction opens up the muscles, Rhythmic Traction, is a gentle rocking motion that stimulates circulation and encourages blood flow through the muscles, which clears the lactic acid into your lymph system where it stimulates lymph flow and deals with it. Most people with serious neck issues see a large improvement after only one treatment.

alignment it does not last long, the only difference between the body and a machine is that the body is constantly repairing itself, however if the wear and tear on the body is greater than the body’s ability to repair itself, it is a slow decline. The Teeter slowly brings the body out of its decline and allows the body to repair itself, resulting in a far healthier life.

If you are serious about investing in your health and really sorting your issues out, come see us at one of our local roadshows, you have nothing to lose and chances are, a lot to gain.

Our Back Pain Expos We host a number of back pain expos throughout the country almost every weekend, these expos are a way for people to try out a Teeter Inversion Table and feel the beniefits for themselves in a way that is instructive and informative. It is also a great way for people who already own an Inversion Table to come along and get a refreshment course on the use and operation of their Table and clear any questions they have about it. Sessions run continuously from 10am to 4pm and there are no bookings required, just come along at a time that suits you. There may be a wait during certain times and in these instances chairs are set out for anyone waiting for a turn, or anyone who just wants to ask us a few questions. Kauri planting ends for year The future of the kauri tree in the Kaipara has had a ‘shot in the arm’ recently with the Kauri Regeneration Programme undertaken by The Kauri Museum with the aid of schools and the wider community.

p The Chapman family, Mark Vincent, Adam Stevens and his two sons Charlie and Flynn — enthusiastic tree planters head home

“We have all but finished planting for the 2019 season and we are pleased to report that in the last three months over 120 kauri have been planted in the Kaipara District,” said the museum’s Kay McElvie. “We are extremely grateful to the Chapman family who donated 20 trees to the project and joined us for the planting. The family has promised to donate 20 trees a year for the next 10 years. “We also acknowledge the Friends of the Museum donation of $500 and the many people who have bought a tree from the shop for planting on public land. These donations have enabled us to distribute trees to all the local primary schools, the Paparoa and Maungaturoto walkways and the

new walkway alongside the Matakohe bridges. NZTA also planted several large specimens at the museum turnoff from SH16. “We are now working on establishing future public sites, including, we hope some council land, and sourcing more trees, so that when Arbor Day 2020 comes along we will be ready to go. If you would like to donate to this scheme please, either pop into the museum shop, or email events@kaurimuseum. com.” Last Tuesday saw the whole of Paparoa Primary School turning out to help plant out an area alongside the stream behind the Paparoa Store that will be a walkway for the Twin Streams lifestyle village, which is being developed. ¢

This Sunday saw a full technical and dress rehearsal of the forthcoming Dargaville Wearable Arts extravaganza, as behind closed doors at the Dargaville Town Hall the digital projectors were fired up, the models donned their makeup, and the final touches were added to a dazzling array of artworks. Sitting in the darkened auditorium — the tension and excitement were palpable. The first impression, of an otherworldly, neon-lit forest replacing the hall’s stage, was quickly eclipsed as the music began to play and the hall was painted with moving patterns and colours, thanks to the live ‘video DJ’ skills of visual artists AwhiWorld. The second impression was delivered by the wearable artworks themselves, and while to describe any of these creations in detail might spoil the surprise for this Friday’s opening night, let it suffice to say that our creative locals have outdone themselves. From the very young (including kindergarten students) through to seasoned veterans in the field, each artist has struck that engaging balance between imagination and practical application. You can appreciate the sheer scale of crafting such artworks from a technical viewpoint, or revel in the colour, light and riotous creativity on display. Equally, it’s amazing to see it all brought to life by a team of models who take on the challenge of the wild, the weird (and some towering platform

shoes) to give this production attitude. It’s all coming together, and all that is needed now, for a fantastic series of shows this Friday and Saturday, is an appreciative audience to come and be amazed. Wearable Arts has evolved, and 2019’s production is sure to be talked about long after the winners are announced and the curtain falls. ¢

Craig Jepson — ‘Community first’ u by Craig Jepson

Ratepayers like to know simple truths from their prospective councillors — I don’t see any point in fence-sitting. The Otamatea ward has generated more than $200,000 in reserve contributions from development. Only half of this has been spent back in Maungaturoto, Paparoa and Tinopai. The Dargaville-dominated council where little development occurs has been busy spending up while Otamatea does not receive its share. If elected, I will ensure that it is spent where it should offset the effects of growth. Climate change? Seems to be a frequently asked question of candidates. Here’s my take. I will not be supporting any so-called climate emergency when there isn’t one. The empirical evidence does not support the hysteria. New Zealand, as a whole, is the most efficient farming nation in the world. Our farmers, particularly in the North, have enough hurdles without the added burden of being penalised for being our most productive sector. Roading. Have an approach where every year a realistic target for new seal is progressed. Tourism. The economic benefits to our district are ongoing and can be further developed to provide high value with low environmental impact. I ask for support to construct

a coast to coast cycle/tourist trail from Mangawhai through to Matakohe and Ruawai. I have experienced the Otago Rail Trail and The Opua to Horeke Trail, which has increased exponentially the revenue in these more off-thetrack locations and we will reap the same benefits. We are weighed down by bureaucracy. For example, currently, KDC is going ahead with spending seven million dollars for the next district plan. We could have reviewed and rolled over the previous five million dollar plan for a fraction of this cost. This plan like the last will further add rule upon rule, which will only be of benefit to those that wrote them, lawyers and consultants. A plan should be a simple document we can all read, and understand. Your choice is simple. Support the failed history of former councillors and staff or a councillor who does not accept the status quo. I will take a no-nonsense, practical and effective approach to support and further the interests of ratepayers and residents of the Otamatea Ward. Vote Craig Jepson number one for Otamatea Ward. ¢

Born and bred in Dargaville, I am a mum to twin girls who attend Dargaville Primary School while my husband and I work for major companies here in Dargaville.

With your vote, my purpose will continue to be safer Kaipara roads, a healthy and vibrant environment and betterconnected communities.

I have stepped up as I am worried about the future of the Kaipara, not only for my children but for my friend’s children and possibly my grandkids. We are lacking people who roll up their sleeves and get the job done. Roading, tourism, infrastructure, animal control, are just some of the topics that need to be addressed immediately. I don’t have a PhD or a Dr in front of my name. All I have is the can-do attitude and will do my damn hardest to achieve results for you, the community.

My professional successes include managing the Love Kaipara waste minimisation project; early childhood education and governance; and political studies leading to a master’s degree. For more than two decades living in Kaipara, I have put my skills into action for our communities and the environment. My work has focussed on ways to address the ecological issues

I’m a mum on a mission because I care for what is best for our people. You want to be able to walk down new footpaths and not have to worry about menacing dogs. You can be able to play in our awesome parks. Be able to do stuff with the family every weekend instead of having to travel. Travel on proper, worked-on roads instead of playing dodge the pothole. Upgrading septic standards If you live in the country, coastal area or a small rural town, your household effluent including toilet, shower, kitchen and laundry wastewater, probably drains into an on-site treatment system, and from there into the ground somewhere in your backyard. The standard on-site household effluent system has two parts — treatment and disposal. Treatment systems commonly used for household effluent include septic tanks and a group of treatment plants known as Aerated Wastewater Treatment Systems (AWTS). Treatment plants that use sand and textile filters to provide advanced treatment of effluent are also becoming increasingly popular. When the effluent leaves a treatment system, it is only partially treated. Final treatment is carried out by the bacteria that are in the soil below the effluent disposal system. The main purpose of the disposal system is to keep the effluent in the soil within the disposal area, so this final treatment happens. A variety of disposal systems are available, with each being designed to suit different site conditions and

soil types. The correct operation and continued maintenance of your on-site system are very important. If neglected, it can pollute groundwater and streams, puts you and your neighbours’ health at risk, and these issues can be expensive to fix. Information is available on your local council website outlining the way the various systems work, what is required to keep them operating effectively, and how to look after your effluent treatment and disposal system. Guidelines on what is required to keep them operating effectively can also be

found. Information is available on topics such as discharges to land and water, on-site domestic wastewater discharges, wastewater network and treatment plant discharges, production land discharges, stormwater discharges, industrial and trade wastewater discharges. Each council has its own rules and guidelines, and it is important to note that you must ensure your septic system meets the requirements specific for the region it is in. Each district council may have their own bylaws regarding on-site sewage systems and property owners need to be aware of these requirements. ¢

THE WHANGAREI HOME SHOW

This year’s trends in technology u by Andy Bryenton

With Auckland’s home show over and the home show in Whangarei just days away, companies who specialise in technology for the home are proud to present their latest and greatest and while we’re still waiting for robotic servants and flying cars, technology to make the home more comfortable is coming down in price. The theme of 2019 seems to be connectivity, and it’s happening in different ways. First off the rank is ducted air conditioning, once the preserve of commercial premises and the super-rich, but now more than within the grasp of the average homeowner. With the ability to duct cool air into every room via remote or your smartphone, while retaining heat exchanging stale air for fresh in the winter, this new item is sure to be a hot ticket, especially for those who like their aircon unobtrusive. Another ducted idea that is coming of age is the ducted vacuum cleaner system. Once again, it’s a price drop and the advent of more powerful electric motors, which make this possible. There’s no need to carry a bulky unit around the home with this innovation; instead, there are ports in each room that accommodate a lightweight hose. The most advanced versions bag lint and dust away for easy disposal. Some can incorporate docking ports for robotic mini-vacuums, which scoot under furniture or disperse a pleasing scent as you clean. Of course, the biggest tech ‘musthave’ right now is super-high-resolution television, delivered via ultra-fast broadband. However, for those who wish

THE WHANGAREI HOME SHOW

New era for a respected name u by Andy Bryenton

Dargaville’s long-established name in both concrete and Skyline buildings is set to carry on into a new generation from September. Owners with 40 years of experience in the industry, John and Annette Vuletich, proudly sell the Skyline Buildings division of his business to their son Jeromey and his wife, Nicole. It’s a milestone, which the family and the businesses involved are pleased to announce, bringing to culmination a long-term plan that has seen Jeromey take up a managerial role in the Skyline construction aspect of this well-respected company. Now the two firms will be divided, under father and son respectively. John will continue to offer his more than four decades of experience in concreting to a discerning public. Meanwhile, the quarter-century association with Skyline is assured of being in good hands, under the new name of Vuletich Building and Contracting Limited, Jeromey and Nicole’s new company. Jeromey has been working with John for more than 20 years, gaining experience in both building and concrete, being more focussed on building in the past decade.

“Vuletich Construction would like to offer our profound and heartfelt thanks to everyone who has supported us along the way to this milestone,” says John. “Our customers through the years of course, in this district, and those who we have been privileged enough to help build a home or garage for their families. Our suppliers and those who have worked with us also deserve special thanks, as do the members of the team, past and present — who have worked hard to enable us to enjoy a lasting reputation.” With Jeromey and Nicole, a new generation is injecting fresh enthusiasm and verve into the building side of the business, and the many decades of knowledge inherent in John’s experience is now focussed on his concreting craft. It may be the case that two Vuletich

THE WHANGAREI HOME SHOW

A simple cut, perfected

SMOKE ALARMS

As a young man, I remember travelling to that man-cave of yesteryear, the old-fashioned barbershop for a ‘proper hair cut’. There amid magazines about sports and fishing, blokes would discuss politics, rugby and motor racing while getting a classic short back and sides. It was simple, effective, neat, tidy and quick. Which, if you think about it, is just what you want from your lawnmower as well. A simple job, done just right, with a uniform level of clipped grass as crisp and level as the haircut on our old men’s barber himself. That’s exactly the approach Stiga have taken with their 2019 offering in ride-on lawn maintenance, the Tornado 2098 H. It’s got everything you need in a ride-on and nothing you don’t; more pointedly, the things you do need have been cleverly rethought for efficiency and ease of use. Take the engine — a 450cc air-cooled unit delivering a reliable 8.4 kilowatts hour after hour. Power goes down through a simple pedal-operated hydrostatic drive, with forward and reverse actuated with heel and toe. The controls can be mastered in seconds, as they, too, are simple and functional, such as a single push button to mow in reverse. The cutting deck beneath features a wide 98cm cut, with twin diagonally offset blades and a side outlet, all mounted on wheels to follow the gradient of the turf. Toughness has been added with a cast-

iron front axle and robust steel bumpers to take the knock of day-to-day garden use, while even the plastics used for the cowling and guards are deliberately built stronger. Best of all, this compact and comfortable ride-on won’t just prove hard to break. It also won’t break the bank. With simplicity to the fore, you’ll

still get a drink holder and all the cutting technology you need, but there’s no bigticket price. In a sector where ride-ons can top the $5,000 mark, this new Stiga will save dollars on both purchase cost and ongoing maintenance. Take a test drive today and gear up for springtime lawns that a sergeant major would be proud of! ¢

Light and bright is the colour palette being selected by top interior designers for the year ahead as we emerge from the winter doldrums of spirit and look to a brighter future on the homefront. Those colours range through to the ones that exist in nature. Sand, wood, various greens, sky blue, coral white, light ashy and grey and will no doubt find the way into the upcoming house are garden magazine editions. Already design pundits are talking about personality and character. Then too, is the trend to smaller is better — let’s face it; building costs are not getting any lower with the passage of time. For the sleeping function of life, lofts are becoming the in-thing, especially on the bachelor front, where the pad lends itself to creativity. The loft is the in-style; arty and simple and it can be created in a number of styles with wood, metal and padding to complement cosiness. There is also an upcoming design view that less is more. Uncluttered spaces make for easier, nay calmer living. It’s a far cry from the Victorian clutter of yesterday’s bric-a-brac A/Hrs 09 431 8451 and ornamentation. kaiparaplumbing@gmail.com Fewer items in the rooms make space much more apparent. The simple reality is that minimalism is beautiful in any form it takes. The environment too rears

its design head for the coming year, and the eco theme is one to be embraced particularly with eco-friendly materials being used, not to mention the cleaning products in the cupboard. Planning on redecorating in those aforementioned nature-based colours, then be aware that paints can be toxic. Many contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs), chemicals that contain carbon, which evaporates into the air at room temperature and contribute to poor air quality, even

headaches and nausea. Ask your supplier for zero-VOC paint. If you are adding building materials to the design mix, look to recycling wood, glass, metals and tiles. There are plenty of second-hand outlets that will fire your imagination. We say there is nothing new under the sun, and 2020 will certainly see that old decor standby reappearing. Yes, plants are still the way to go, and it’s good for the air you breathe too. Indoor plants are a winner every time. ¢

Odds and clods busted down to size u by Andy Bryenton

Unlike with other agricultural implements such as the plough, we know who invented the harrow in ancient times. As the growth of grains other than rice was popularised in the northern Chinese empire in around 500AD, new tools were needed to create a good seedbed, and break up the earth without causing the formation of hardpan. Enter Jia Sixie, an ambitious official in the equivalent to our modern department of agriculture, Jia wrote about a plan to use a specialist tool to break up the clods of earth disrupted by ploughing, creating a finer tilth layer, preventing the growth of weeds and the spread of insect pests. The first such advancement in Europe was brought to England by William the Conqueror with his French knights in 1066. So important was the harrow to improved farming (which, of course, fed and paid for more knights) that it’s depicted in the

Bayeux tapestry, alongside the battle of Hastings itself. Following this came the spring-tine harrow, developed by the Germans in the 1600s. Its creator, by the surname of Ecker, was granted a title and coat of arms for his innovation, which took the concept of a horse-drawn harrow further than the mesh of wooden staves and metal claws, or chains with spikes that had come before. Still, the aim was to follow after the plough, breaking up large lumps of heavy earth into a peasized, less dense consistency to make

a perfect seedbed. These bigger, heavier harrows also covered up seed after sowing and could be used to roughly disrupt weed growth, giving seed a better chance. Mighty disc harrows, larger again, were used in the plains of the early United States to break-in previously unfarmed land. However, it’s thought that their overuse in soils unsuitable for western-style farming may have contributed to the dust bowl disaster

so vividly written about in The Grapes of Wrath. With the advent of the tractor and hydraulic power, the modern harrow was born, incorporating several sets of independently turning tines. Since the 1960s, the use of this kind of harrow has exploded. It comes with the benefit of not turning over the layers of soil but keeping them stratiated, thus keeping dormant weed and pest seeds from competing with precision-sown crops. ¢
