p Paparoa Primary School’s 10th annual Possum Purge went off with a bang last week with approximately 800 possums being eradicated from the environment over four days. The fundraiser was followed by a gala day and a prize-giving on Sunday, along with kapa haka performances. Principal, Simon Schuster, even got into the spirit of things by plucking his very first possum. “The weather was perfect, and we had a huge turnout with great support from the wider community,” Mr Schuster said. “A huge thanks goes to the Possum Purge committee for all the hours they put into organising this and thanks also to the huge plethora of sponsors from the community. It was great to see such a variety of food outlets and attractions at the gala and another thanks to our hardworking parents and the Parent Teacher Association for running the events.”

Pesticide 1080 an emotional issue u by Jill Dickie

Protestors raised banners and signs in support of the nationwide march to stop the use of the pesticide 1080 in New Zealand. Dargaville residents and visitors tooted their support as they drove past the Kaipara District Council building on Sunday.

Local hunters and others joined the thousands around the country, including environmental groups, calling for a ban on the pesticide — claiming it killed native birds, commonly hunted wildlife, domestic livestock and dogs, and affected waterways. “We would prefer land baiting and shooting rather than aerial 1080

because of the uncontrolled drops landing in waterways, and they (DOC) can’t confirm there is no second-hand poisoning,” said protester Tracey Holster. Tracey’s family members professedly earn a living from trapping possums and selling the fur — her brother has done so for more than 20 years. Traps are around $8 each, and he sets up to

160 at a time. About 20–25 possums net one kilogram of fur, which sells for between $100–$120. The lightweight and insulating fur is popular in the garment industry, and according to some sources, is 8% warmer and 14% lighter than wool. continued on page 3 …

p Dargaville’s first-ever ‘Bringing death to life’ meeting attracted 15 people who gathered to eat cake and talk openly about death. Based on the growing worldwide concept of ‘Death Cafes’ — the discussion group aims to increase awareness of death and help people make the most of life. Topics discussed included funeral preparation, legalities around death and dying, how to talk to young people about death and whether a funeral director is necessary. Organisers hope to run another meeting in a couple of months.

Pesticide 1080 an emotional issue

Stock tracing imperative u by Jill Dickie

Around 200 interested people from the local farming community met at the Dargaville Town Hall last week to hear from representatives from MPI, Beef + Lamb NZ, Dairy NZ, Federated Farmers and the Rural Support Trust on the topic of Mycoplasma bovis.

p Anti-1080 protestors received support from local drivers as they demonstrated outside the Kaipara District Council building on Sunday

The protestors were unable to provide a suitable alternative idea for the removal of other pests such as rats, mice, stoats and feral cats. Agencies such as Federated Farmers, Forest and Bird, and DOC agree that the use of biodegradable 1080 is the most effective tool currently available for suppressing pests in large, difficult to access areas, where most of New Zealand’s native wildlife lives. These organisations claim it is backed by years of rigorous testing, review and research by scientists from Landcare Research, Universities, the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), Ministry of Health and the independent Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment. According to some of these studies, 1080 leaches from baits in water into toxicologically insignificant amounts within 12 hours, and the chemical would not be in the environment for long due to bacterial breakdown. “If it was as unsafe as some would say, we

wouldn’t be using it,” said DOC principal adviser, Herb Christophers. The imported pesticide is mixed into a cereal-based bait and is spread at a concentration rate of 1.5kg/ha, compared to 15kg/ha approximately 20 years ago. Deaths of non-target species are reported through an inadvertent spread of pellets. Some animals, such as dogs, are more susceptible to poisoning, being affected by approximately less than one eighth the lethal dose for a possum. Secondary poisoning occurs when an animal or bird eats a recently deceased carcase. Studies have shown that 1080 concentrations peak in most species after six hours, concluding that prolonged persistence is unlikely. Pro-1080 trappers have stated an opinion that all species of pests needed eradicating for native bush and wildlife to thrive. Further information is available at 1080facts.co.nz. ¢

Biosecurity New Zealand believes the disease is limited to one network of farms that are connected by animal movements, and are in the process of identifying properties of high risk due to unknowingly receiving infected animals. Tracing herd movements since 2015 is a part of the phased eradication response operation by MPI, and has been very reliant on the diligent record keeping done by farmers. According to Dair yNZ representative, Sharon Morrell, in one week during August this year, more than 141,000 animals were relocated around the country, showing the importance of accurate NAIT (National Animal Identification and Tracing) records and managing biosecurity risks. “If we can improve NAIT to the point it is easier to use, in the event of any future infections we will much more easily be able to trace infected

Pay attention!

properties,” said MPI veterinary pathologist, Dr Kelly Buckle. To date, 67 of 12,000 properties have been infected, and MPI is confident there is a very good chance of eradication, though restocked farms will be monitored for the next five or six years to ensure there is no recurrence. A Dargaville property, placed under surveillance earlier this year, has tested positive for the disease, after inadvertently buying infected weaner bulls. Dr Brian Lowe of Dargaville Vet Clinic assured attendees there is no risk to neighbouring properties, and locally purchased bulls do not carry the disease. MPI recommends farmers are thorough in their checks of where the stock is coming from, and to consider all biosecurity risks. The 50-tonne reinforced concrete beams are programmed to be transported from Auckland to Matakohe from Wednesday through to Saturday and contractors Fulton Hogan warn of delays to traffic with the beans and transport units measuring more than 30 metres. “Please expect a slower journey should you find yourself driving behind one of our transporters hauling an over-dimensional load,” a company spokesman warns. “There may be occasions when the transporter comes to a stop and the rear, independent unit is manoeuvred

to negotiate the 50-tonne beam around a tight corner. There are limited opportunities on SH12 between the SH1 turnoff at the Brynderwyns and Matakohe to safely pass even shorter vehicles. Each beam plus its transporter measures more than 30 metres and pilot vehicles will accompany each transporter and help manage traffic flows. The transporters shorten in length for their return journeys to Auckland. Each transporter hauls one beam at a time. Transporting will start on Wednesday, September 12 at night ¢

Northland Rescue Helicopter will soon celebrate 30 years in the air in November.

A historic bullock wagon recently removed from its shelter at the Kauri Bushman’s Memorial Scenic Reserve has been delivered to The Kauri Museum for restoration and future display.

The Northland Rescue Helicopter made its first rescue in November 1988 and transported a patient from the car park at Kaitaia Hospital. Now the organisation is about to embark on their annual fundraising campaign in October, which will include activities such as community breakfasts, school visits and helicopter rides. “Annually we transport over 900 patients, both locals and visitors to our region. Our appeal is your chance to support our vital service and helps keep us in the air throughout Northland,” says chief pilot and CEO, Peter Turnbull. The wagon was delivered by Hiab truck into the back of the museum, where its history will be conserved with respect, according to museum spokesman, Pete Panhuis. “The volunteers working on it are retired engineers, mechanics, and farmers and have a lifetime of knowledge and skill — they are our lifeline,” said Panhuis. “All the work will be done here; we won’t replace anything that doesn’t need replacing because we want it to be as original as possible.” The wagon has previously had repairs in pine so those will be replaced, and a

part of the braking system also needs attention. The work is expected to take around six months. Ownership is attributed to kauri bushman, Bill Dennis, and it was gifted by him to the Kauri Bushman’s Association. Teams of 14 or more bullocks towed felled kauri logs through the bush to Kaipara waterways, and when roads were developed, they pulled the logs on a wagon. In some instances — two teams were required to haul the heavy load. The largest known number of bullocks hauling in one load was 72. ¢

ADVERTORIAL

Kaipara-raised TSR helps farmers plan for growth this spring Northland is well-known for its beautiful beaches and endless summers. It’s New Zealand’s only subtropical region and, thanks to its fertile soils, it’s been described as the cradle of agricultural farming in New Zealand. In 1769, Captain Cook wrote about seeing 40-50 acres of land cultivated and planted by Maori in the Bay of Islands. The first European farm was established by Samuel Marsden at Kerikeri in 1819, with a bull and two cows from the King’s herd. Over its long farming history, the region’s farmers have endured many challenges. Summers sometimes prove too long while heavy rain and flooding certainly aren’t unheard of. Last month the first case of Mycoplasma Bovis was found in Northland on a dry stock beef farm and, like everywhere in New Zealand, regulatory pressures are increasing. But maximising productivity regardless of the challenges is what farming is all about and it’s always been crucial to know where to turn for expert advice that is as trustworthy as it is unbiased. As Technical Sales Rep (TSR) for Whangarei, Jamie Lang does exactly that for the 203 farmers in his catchment area north of Auckland. Born and bred on a dairy farm in Ruawai, Jamie has “dabbled in most things ag – from sheep and beef to deer and tractor driving and helicopters” since graduating from Massey University with a Bachelor of Agricultural Science. But his roots are firmly planted in dairy and it continues to be his focus.

“Dairy is something I’m very familiar with but there’s always something to learn,” says Jamie. He learned about the importance of pre-planning when he first began as TSR earlier this year. Farmers were busy with regrassing and Jamie noticed a few of them seemed to lack a solid strategy. “They were saying ‘I need grass seed tomorrow’ which wasn’t ideal from a timing perspective,” says Jamie. So this spring, he’s urging farmers to get in touch with their TSR early so they can help get a plan sorted “rather than waiting until October and November when things become more urgent”, he says. “It’s about giving technical advice, rather than trying to sell them something – that’s not my focus,” says Jamie, who reckons the ‘S’ in TSR is more appropriately referenced as ‘solutions’ rather than ‘sales’. “To me, the emphasis should really be on the ‘T’ – the technical side of things. Farmers get enough people coming down their driveways in branded utes trying to sell them something. I know as a customer I don’t like being ‘sold’ to and at the end of the day we are here to help with the long-term growth of their farming business. And the only way to do that is to build trust by giving them the advice they need and pointing them

In fact, when we catch up with him, Jamie is returning from visiting a farmer with one of his seed vendor reps. “We were looking at cropping options, mainly brassicas, and seeing what would work best for this farmer.” With the farmer’s productivity goals always top of mind, on this particular occasion the seed vendor rep didn’t have the best seed option for Jamie’s farmer. “I’m going to get him some more information and potentially what this

Gallery celebrates 20th anniversary u by Ayla Miller

Situated in an unassuming studio on Murdoch Street, Mangawhare, is Big River Gallery — which has exhibited a variety of oil, acrylic and pastel artwork by local artist Jean Sircombe for the past 20 years. Over the years, Jean has tutored many people and sold countless pieces of art from the accompanying exhibition room with pieces on display all over the world. ”Painting takes me out of myself and keeps me grounded. I also enjoy teaching, and I get satisfaction out of seeing other people happy with their artworks,” she says. Author fosters writing talent Northland indie author Michael Botur is delivering a workshop on fiction writing and says he’s looking forward to bringing Kaipara writers together — which doesn’t happen often enough. Michael, who is based in Whangarei, says he follows which writers are actively contributing to literature in Northland — thanks to his day job writing journalism and providing literary writing services, as well as running the Write Up North website and Facebook group. “Three of the Kaipara people who are keeping the talent up around Dargaville are Hokianga short story writer Susy Pointon, Jody Reynolds of Dargaville — who is particularly good at managing fans over the internet — and I’ve been really impressed by Wild Side Publishing emerging from Ruawai.“ The four and a half hour workshop looks at the workflow required to get a story polished on the page — so authors can be confident about publishing the work in a literary magazine or online. “Reaching an audience these days is about capturing inspiration, checking that the words are good enough to publish, then sharing it with the world online. I’ll be offering realistic advice about how to make the most of those hours in front of the computer screen.” The workshop will include a brief

Behind every Bayleys person... are more Bayleys people.

OUR STORY When starting her Real Estate career five year’s ago, Catherine had a feeling that the key to becoming successful was to help people get to where they want to be. For Catherine, it was about bringing together like-minded people who are specialists within their field, are passionate about what they do, love working in a team environment and have great systems in place to ensure the client is getting the best experience when selling their greatest asset. Her team quickly grew as Tinelle came on board as her Client Services Manager who is the engine room behind her business, has structure and whom now holds her Real Estate License. A short time after, Lisa joined the team as a lifestyle specialist, she was fresh to the industry, was excited about starting her Real Estate career and had an abundance of knowledge about rural and residential property in the Kaipara, where she was born and bred. Their focus is about the journey and achieving the best possible results for their client by trying to reach buyers that others can’t. They utilise the Bayleys brand and the Bayleys people. They enjoy getting behind their community, to help make a difference, because at the end of the day, it’s all about the people.

Welcome to Mangawhai Mangawhai tags a winner u by Jill Dickie

Upcycling success

Kaipara Tag football kicked off the season with a gala day in Mangawhai last Saturday, and as a result children and adults new to the game have registered to play.

p A fun tag game at the recent gala day resulted in several new players

The gala day was designed as a ‘give tag a try’ day, and included a referees’ training clinic to upskill those interested in furthering their knowledge and ability. “We had a lot of people coming to support their kids who have now ended up registering themselves into the adult competition because they enjoyed themselves so much,” said organiser, Natasha Smith. “The referees’ clinic was more aimed towards training up the next generation, and for the adult grades

we pay professional referees to come from Auckland each week.” Tag rules are similar to rugby league, and the sport is played with eight players on half the usual sized field. It is a non-contact alternative where tags are ripped from the wearer instead of physically tackling players. Mixed grades are played — which allows for women players to be just as important as the men on the field. Interested junior and adult players are welcome to join the competition by contacting Tash on 027 978 4009. ¢

RESTHOME & VILLAGE

The Maungaturoto Community Charitable Trust is undertaking to build a Dementia Care Unit attached to the current Riverview Rest Home in Maungaturoto. This will better enable the rest home to cater to the increasing needs of our community. Costs associated with this project are immense to say the least. To date the MCCT has spent close to $650,000 gaining the necessary consents, organising bank finance and getting the foundations completed. The Trust has raised a further $79,000 but require another $900,000 to complete the project.

I am pleased to support the MCCT with their current project and I will donate $250 to the Trust with every new listing I sign up. Terms and Conditions apply.

Alzheimer’s awareness

Baylys broadband underway

u by Ayla Miller

u by Jill Dickie

On Saturday, September 22 the community are invited to don some purple hues and walk in solidarity with Alzheimer’s Northland for the annual Kaipara Alzheimer’s Memory Walk.

The Baylys Beach Society recently hosted a residents’ meeting at Sharkys restaurant for representatives from Chorus and their contractors Visionstream, to discuss the fibre broadband connection in the district.

p Participants came out in full force for last years Alzheimer’s Memory Walk in Dargaville

The walk is a fun, free event aimed at raising awareness and reducing the stigma around Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia. Each participant is given a free purple t-shirt and will walk through Te Awa Gardens to the band rotunda, back through town and finishing at Jo’s Cookery. The walk will take approximately half an hour. “We are thankful for Jo’s Home Cookery being able to offer something at the end of the walk. Alzheimer’s Northland Manager, Kevin Salmon and Alzheimer’s Fundraiser, Gary Bell will

also be available on the day for any queries or questions,” says Alzheimer’s Northland Kaipara community adviser, Vivienne Hollis. Ten per cent of any food bought at Jo’s on the day until 3pm will be donated to Alzheimer’s Northland. Registration is preferred at alzheimers.org.nz/memorywalk but not necessary in order to take part. Please contact Alzheimer’s Northland on 0800 004 001 for further information. Meet at 10am in the Countdown car park, Dargaville. National Alzheimer’s Awareness day is September 21. ¢

p Attending the information meeting were Chorus representative Steve Gleadell, Baylys Beach Society chair Cheryl Carmichael, Visionstream representatives Peter Bierton and Mel Dawson and Chorus representative, Stephan Van Der Merwe

Construction began on September 3 and is expected to be completed by January next year. Residents will receive notification when fibre is available with details on how to connect. Several residents and homeowners forwarded their questions to the meeting, and about a dozen of them were able to attend to hear of progress on the new network. They had the opportunity to meet and question the project managers from

Chorus, as well as the Visionstream construction team who will be working on the project. “There is an overall feel of excitement in our community. We are looking forward to the speed and clarity the new network will provide, and best of all it is free,” said BSS chair, Cheryl Carmichael. It is expected almost 300 premises in the area will be able to connect to the ultrafast network once completed. ¢

One of fourteen children, this young man chose to run away to sea, in an age when this was still a common way of finding one’s fortune. That fortune made he and his wife the first European settlers in the area — which is now Dargaville. Of course, the town by the banks of the Northern Wairoa River carries the name of builder and magnate Joseph Dargaville. However, his endeavours did not kick off until the 1870s. It is just to the south of the modern town centre, in Mangawhare, where in 1838 Mr Thomas Spencer Forsaith and his new bride Elizabeth founded their farm. How he came to know about the opportunities here was down to his seafaring past — he had been an officer aboard one of the infamous convict ships, which ferried those condemned to transportation to Australia. Travelling aboard the Hoogley to Botany Bay in 1834, the 20-year-old Forsaith was a fourth officer — hardly a position of high rank, but one, which enabled him to see the world and talk with other sailors. At the same time, the British Navy was offering the sum of seventeen pounds for each kauri timber spar — a year’s wages for a poor London labourer. Moreover, a new source of

those spars had just been discovered. In 1838, one hundred and eighty years ago, Thomas returned to London for the last time, to marry his sweetheart and ask of her a seemingly impossible sacrifice. Come with him to the far side of the world, give up European society, and live as pioneers alongside the Maori people of the Kaipara. She agreed, and by 1839 the pair had purchased land from local Maori under the auspices of their respected chief, Te Tirarau Kukupa. Isolated from European contact and even the church, Forsaith reported a respectful relationship with his neighbours, and he soon learned the basics of Te Reo Maori and many of the cultural practices and beliefs, which governed their interactions. By 1841, with the Treaty of Waitangi still fresh, the Forsaith settlement was producing spars as well as wheat and cattle. p Thomas S Forsaith looking stern in his Victorian formal However, a misunderstanding was wear — he was more at home on the farm or in the bush to change the destiny of the Forsaith family the year after. treachery. then & now As the son of a draper, he could not have risen far in government in England. Here, his fluency in Te Reo Maori, his knowledge of Maori customs and culture, and his fairdealing nature made him a perfect fit for a top race relations role. It was he who escorted Bishop Selwyn on his journeys into the hinterland to preach, and he who hosted the great chief Te Rauparaha when he visited Wellington to talk to the governor. In time, the governorship became a democratic

government — and Thomas Forsaith was elected as the first MP for Northland in the first parliament of 1853. This remarkable man — and his no less remarkable wife — were willing to take their chance and travel halfway around the world, 180 years ago, to become the first founders of European settlement in the West Kaipara. While he may have been locally eclipsed by Joseph Dargaville, at least in name, his legacy lives on. ¢

does not record the accusation, but it does record the retribution — a raiding party ransacked Forsaith’s farm, inflamed with anger. Upon his return, the settler was distressed, but pleaded his innocence rather than demanding vengeance by armed force. It turned out to be the right call — a magistrate was dispatched from Auckland, and the skull revealed to be a relic neither local Iwi or Forsaith had known about — perhaps a remnant of preEuropean conflict. As settlement, Forsaith was given a block of land, which was to

become modern-day Te Kopuru. Having settled the spot, which would become one of our modern towns, and having a hand in the implementation of another, Thomas Forsaith had another concern. His wife was pregnant with their first child, so he exchanged his farm and holdings for others near Auckland. Mangawhare would go on to become a business hub for entrepreneur Sir John Logan Campbell and his associates. However, it was the magistrate who presided over the ‘mystery skull’ case who saw the potential of Mr Forsaith.

Animal welfare upgrade u by Jill Dickie

New regulations designed to strengthen animal welfare compliance in New Zealand will come into effect on October 1, making it easier for MPI and the SPCA to take action against the mistreatment of animals. The 45 new regulations cover a range of species and activities from stock transport and farm husbandry procedures, to the care of companion and working animals. Fines may be issued to offenders for short-term infringements, and for more serious offences or long-term effects on an animal — criminal prosecution and conviction may result.

“With less than a month to go until these new regulations come into effect, we want to encourage people, who are responsible for any type of animal, to check they are up to date in how they are looking after them,” says MPI director for animal health and welfare, Dr Chris Rodwell. “The majority of the regulations reflect existing standards, but there are a few that do set new rules and requirements, such as prohibiting the tail docking of cows and dogs and not allowing their animal’s horns to become ingrown.”

In developing the regulations, current science, good practice and the views of submitters considered — should allow welfare officers to better respond to lower levels of offending, and target specific behaviours within the community. “Most New Zealanders already care for their animals well, so if you’re already doing the right thing, you won’t see a lot of change — but we will continue to prosecute the worst offenders under the Animal Welfare Act,” said Rodwell. ¢

Compact and competent u by Andy Bryenton

Sometimes bigger is not always better. Depending on the job, and the nature of the terrain, it can sometimes be a big advantage to have a machine on hand that’s lighter and more agile. That’s something, which Kiwi farmers have been finding out as they pair up versatile side-by-side off-road vehicles with quad bikes to make a working team. With the large, often three-man machines at their disposal in the SSV range, it’s good to have a nimble, multi-role quad as a backup. With quads out there topping the 1,000cc range and weighing in literally bigger than the old Fiat 500 road car, it’s nice to see a farm-ready variant in the smaller figures, which offers plenty of go for a diminutive price. CF-Moto offers just such a vehicle with their X400, and now that name comes with three very welcome new letters — EPS. That means electric power steering, a feature which has become very much in demand. Suffice to say, try it once, and you won’t want to go back to life without it! Under the skin, the X400 EPS LE packs a 400cc liquid cooled four-stroke, with a triedand-tested single overhead cam, four valve layout. You won’t find old-fashioned carbs here — fuel injection is standard. It’s the same with other details, like braided brake lines and a Canadian-sourced CVT transmission. A low cost to buy hasn’t meant a low tech approach. In fact, with the added bonus of a current offer, this competent little offroader scores a winch, protector bars on the front, and six-ply mud tyres. CFMoto is also backing it up with a two-
