Mr Nathan died on Wednesday September 2, after a 10 month battle with leukemia and his good friend Ms Urlich died suddenly on September 10. Mr Nathan was born in Rawene in 1948 and was a husband, father and grandfather. He was at the forefront of the Maori ceramic movement from the mid-1980s. His background was in wood carving and sculpture and he cofounded the national Maori clayworkers’ organisation Nga Kaihanga Uku. He drew from a rich heritage of customary art forms. One of his projects was carving the meeting house, Tuohu at Matatina Marae, Waipoua, in 1982 as a request from his tribal elders. He lay in state here before his burial.

“Manos was an extremely talented and private man,” said friend Des Subritzky. “He was very well known overseas for his art works and we didn’t see him around very often because he was absolutely dedicated to art. I believe he was recreating history with his work. He will be missed.” Ms Urlich was born in Te Kopuru in 1939 and went on to do an art major at Auckland Teachers College as well as a masters at Elam School of Fine Arts, becoming a teacher, and specialising in clay as a medium. Colleen was a mother and grandmother, who spent her life as an advocate for Maori art and artists. She was also a founding member and

coordinator for the Maori contemporary clay artists’ movement and received the New Zealand Order of Merit in recognition of all she has achieved for the Maori arts. When she spoke to the Kaipara Lifestyler in regard to her award at the beginning of the year she commented “the award was bestowed for services to Maori art,” and she credited it to “my iwi, my marae, Toi Maori Aotearoa, Nga Kaihanga Uku, particularly the Artists Collective of Te Tai Tokerau and their superb artists and exhibitors — this is really a recognition of all those people.” Ms Urlich’s funeral was held on Monday September 14 at Oturei Marae, Dargaville. ¢

Property boom for Kaipara

Back to a battlefield

u by Ayla Miller

u by Paul Campbell

The Kaipara district is bustling with new residents and investors as the result of a ‘ripple effect’ from the Auckland housing market, according to real estate directors and local organisations in the area.

The name of a Kaipara soldier lost in the battles of the Somme 100 years ago triggered a memorial wall search when I visited the Caterpillar Valley New Zealand Cemetery at Longueval, in France last week.

Dargaville’s First National director Jill Wilson says August was the busiest month since 2005 with 33 sales between their two offices in Dargaville and Maungaturoto. “We are getting investors again which we haven’t had in our rental market for quite some time.” Jean Johnson of Dargaville’s Ray White Jean Johnson Realty believes the Kaipara is a “hidden gem on the West Coast.” “We are seeing people with new ventures and ideas wanting to get involved with the community to create a better place.” Mangawhai has also seen an increase of activity according to the director of Bayleys in the North, Mark Macky. “Mangawhai was hit reasonably hard by the global financial crisis and there were a lot of properties for sale but in the last 18 months that supply has been mopped up. We are starting to see strong price increases which we haven’t seen since 2007. “The vast amount of purchases are coming out of Auckland as Mangawhai is under 90 minutes away,” he said. The Mangawhai Business Development Association chairman, Richard Gunson, says these trends mean people are bringing their business ideas to the area as well as an increase in tourism.

“Not only are we getting people looking to live here, we are getting a lot more domestic and international visitors.” Paparoa Library have noticed an increase in membership, some of which is credited to new residents. “The community is changing all the time, certainly over the past couple of years,” says librarian, Jenny Fenwick. Maungaturoto and Warkworth principal officer for Ray White, Ken Bogue, has also noticed a definite increase in interest from Auckland buyers in sales over the past two months. He says listings in the Warkworth area are running short and expects the same will happen for Maungaturoto. “In the Warkworth area there was a lot of interest around residential housing for living in and investments but in more recent times there has been a lot of interest in lifestyle blocks.” Dargaville Business Forum chairperson, Peter Boyd, believes the community is moving in the right direction. “There are definitely opportunities here, especially with technology, you aren’t limited by your location any more. “We are geographically blessed in terms of the proximity to the coast, Kai Iwi lakes, the history of the Northern Wairoa River and stunning rural landscapes. It’s a lifestyle without the hassle of the city.” ¢

p Paul Campbell visits a fallen Kaipara soldier, now etched in stone at the Somme

Set in bleak rolling farmland, the cemetery is well-tended along a country road. Locals say tractors ploughing surrounding crop fields still turn up the odd wartime shell. On the east side of the cemetery is a wall commemorating more than 1,200 officers and men of the New Zealand Division, and whose actual graves are not known. It was here I found the name of Private James Alison Hume who enlisted in 1915 from Ahikiwi, near Kaihu, and who died in the horror of the Somme, his body never to be found. Now in this lonely outpost of the dead, he is not alone. Also etched into stone bordering 5,569 Commonwealth war dead, with 3,796 of the burials unidentified, are the names of five other Kaipara sons who went to war never to return. They include Private Hugh James

Nairn, Dargaville; Private William Hay, Te Kopuru; Private William Edward Mold, Kaihu; Corporal Edmund James Doran from Dargaville and Corporal Henry George Clark, MM, from Whakahara, Tokatoka. The latter won the Military Medal at Passchendaele serving in the Artillery Engineers. Lonely the graves may be on this former battlefield, but they are tended with great care by the French custodians. And of course loneliness is relative, because here, the dead have many visitors. As we left after placing poppies from the Kaipara at the Memorial Wall, a tour group arrived. A Kiwi couple made themselves known to us, and then joined other members of their party, looking for relatives long dead, but never forgotten. ¢

Premiere charts perilous ascent u by Andy Bryenton

A new film charting 1996s disastrous climbing season high atop the world’s tallest mountain is about to premiere in Dargaville. Everest, chronicling the heroism and danger of the blizzard-lashed ascent and descent of the famous peak, is a visual feast with Kiwi connection. One of the climbers who lost his life in the tragedy was New Zealand mountaineer Rob Hall, while another Kiwi, Andrew Harris, also succumbed to the fierce cold and lack of oxygen that fateful day. What is extraordinary is not that the mountain claimed eight lives, but that many other climbers survived their harrowing ordeal. The film which portrays this story has another special connection to New Zealand, because of course Everest is also the site of one of our national triumphs. It is the reason Sir Edmund Hillary graces our banknotes — and a place where he did so much good for the locals in later life. The Anzac Theatre in Dargaville will premiere Everest on September 17, allowing moviegoers an insight into the grandeur and danger of climbing the world’s tallest peak. Most of us will never

Material Girls: Together Again, written by Deborah Steele and codirected by Julianne Parkinson is set 15 years after the first show in a fictional New Zealand town and follows the lives of the Material Girls and their now teenage children. Motivated by the popularity of the first show which was performed in 2012, Deborah was inspired to write a sequel set in the 90’s, having grown up in this era. “It is a jukebox musical so the audience will recognise a lot of the songs.” She says it is always a challenge putting together a production but has gained confidence over time after the positive reception of the first Material

Students solve crisis u by Ayla Miller

Dealing with international crisis and other global issues is all in a day’s work for Dargaville High School year 12 students Matthew McCarthy and Angie Hodgson who recently got a taste of life as politicians, attending the student-led Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting at parliament.

Audiences are in for an evening of thought-provoking political satire and french farce style comedy with Dargaville High School’s latest production, ‘Archangels Don’t Play Pinball.’

p Dargaville High School year 12 and 13 drama students get into character for their upcoming production ‘Archangels Don’t Play Pinball.’ p Dargaville High School year 12 students Matthew McCarthy and Angie Hodgson represented Australia at a student-led Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting at parliament

Around 80 students from across the country represented 30 of the 53 commonwealth countries at the twoday meeting. The Dargaville High School students represented Australia and had to take on the role of Tony Abbott and Julie Bishop. “It really opened my eyes to the issues in the commonwealth,” said Angie. The second day saw them face a crisis presented by the New Zealand Defence Force representative. Head of Social Sciences at Dargaville High School Alan Wheatley said: “We had two former colonies, East and West Estoria going at each other — one sinking into Marxist anarchy and the

other acting belligerently and trying to take over. “ I was just so impressed with the informed debate that went on around the table. “Being Australia and with the crisis just up the road, Dargaville High School’s delegates were in the thick of the debate as the only real regional power. We handled ourselves with great aplomb.” The pair were also invited to meet with Northland Member of Parliament Winston Peters. Matthew, whose favourite subjects are history and economics said: “It was a humbling opportunity and we got to meet a lot of MP’S.” ¢

The two-act farce was written in 1959 and tells the story of a group of young men who play a prank on one of their peers. Nikau Newman, who will play the leading role of character Lanky, says he liked the concepts and themes of the show from the start. “It is quite abstract and physical and fun. There is more to it than meets the eye but it is definitely a comedy.” Jas Hazeldine, who also plays Lanky, says he enjoys the energy of the play. “It is upbeat and physical with a lot of slapstick humour.” Drama teacher Kate Davidson was inspired when

she saw another play written by Dario Fo. “It is so different to anything that we have ever done. The audiences probably won’t have seen anything like this before. “The students have loved this play right from the start and are really excited about it,” she says. “It works well with the year group.” The production will be held at the school on September 17 and 18 at 7.30pm and September 19 at 2pm and 7.30pm. Tickets are available at the door and the office at $5 for students and senior citizens and $10 for adults. ¢

New premises for Te Roroa Transitioning Big River FM u by Ayla Miller

u by Ann Morgan

Adult learners in Maungaturoto will now have room to grow at the new Te Roroa Learning Assistance premises which recently opened above the Maungaturoto Foursquare.

With Big River FM coming into a time of change, Anaru Tana says he admires those who had the vision to start the radio station.

p From left: Student Puawai Te Iringa, tutor Linda Cowbourne, Foursquare owners Yashni Kant, Sadhna Kant, volunteer Errol Hutchins and TLA manager Janet Te Rore celebrate the opening of the new Te Roroa Learning Assistance premises in Maungaturoto

The premises consist of two large classrooms, with a computer suite, and a small office area which will be used for one on one teaching. “The opening went extremely well. We had about 30 people there and we had two people sign up for a course just after the blessing,” said Te Roroa board of trustees chairperson Mekana Pearson. Mekana says the new space will make a huge difference due to the increase in size of the premises. “Having so much more room means we can provide different courses based on what people want to learn.”

To Anaru & the team at Big River FM...

Ten computers were also purchased for the organisation through a grant from ASB bank allowing students to learn computer literacy. “Two students spoke about the blessing it is to have courses in Maungaturoto so that they don’t have to travel. It was an exciting and pleasant ceremony all together,” she said. The premises were opened in time for Adult Learning Week which saw education providers join together to raise awareness and funds to assist people in becoming lifelong learners. Mekana says the highlight of the week for her was helping to distribute ‘travelling books’ to various schools, libraries and kindergartens around the Kaipara. ¢

FAREWELL ANARU

Dargaville salutes your work with Big River

p Anaru Tana will be transitioning Big River FM into it’s next chapter

“It is thanks to people like Vern Woods, Graham Ramsey, Phil Astley, Francis Kelliher and others who had an open mind and knew people were unhappy with the commercial format which was available. The community were getting bombarded with commercialism and these people had the vision to start Big River FM,” says Anaru. “Vern was good at figuring things out and he helped sort things like the signal and radio licence. Everything was thanks to community minded business people, there was a good mix of characters, all with ideas about how to create a successful community radio station and they knew what they wanted it to look like, it was humming back in the day.” As time went on the costs started to add up and bills roll in. Anaru says the party changed a bit and they had to look more at the serious side of the business. “We needed to put things in order for the operation to be able to run. So many times we could have closed the doors

but the key people had a vision that was over and above for commercial radio. I believe we need passion and belief — that gets you through the hard times. “We had always been behind the eight ball as far as hardware and technology go but now we have a very up to date robust system. We have had stages of literally trying to get things working which broke in the middle of storms, but we got there. There were times when the books didn’t look that good but it wasn’t about the finances, it was about passion and belief, worrying about the money is a waste of good energy. “We have a good station and knew what we wanted for the community. The station is looking at ways and means to ensure its longevity on my departure. “My role is to facilitate the transition and I will be here one or two days a week and continue to oversee things for a while. The specialist shows will continue and the station will still function. It has been a good time but it’s now come to a place for fresh ideas and new things.” ¢

p The Commandant of New Zealand Cadet Forces with No 57 Squadron, Dargaville Air Training Corps

Starting from Lower Cameron Street at 11.30am, they will proceed to Laurie Hall Park Cenotaph where a ceremony will be held at 12 noon. “Warrant officer David Campbell was born in Dargaville in 1920, and known to many as Dinny. He volunteered for the air force when war broke out,” said organiser Cadet Liaison Officer Royal New Zealand Air Force Association Northland, David Reid. “He trained as an airgunner and was flying over Gilze-rijen airfield when

seven enemy aircraft were sighted and attacked. Two were claimed as destroyed and four as damaged. He completed 22 of these missions.” He passed away in 1984 in Whangarei and is still remembered for his dedicated support. “As part of the remembrance of those from the Kaipara district who fought in this war, it would be great to see the community join in the day marking the anniversary of this battle,” said Mr Reid. ¢

They offer a service of removing any old or damp, ceiling insulation that can lead to deterioration of the structure; and fitting new insulation which comes with a fifty year guarantee. Or they can ‘top up’ existing inadequate ceiling insulation. The Pilkington Insulation Team specialise in the retrofitting of homes that do not have any wall insulation with Cosy Wall, and install under-floor insulation. There are a lot of homes supposedly insulated, but as time goes on some insulation becomes less effective, and many homeowners don’t realise this.

Your Journey to Building or Renovating

The home of the future exists today u by Andy Bryenton

We can all remember them from when we were young — fanciful examples of the ‘home of the future’ plucked from the pages of Popular Mechanics, or cooked up by appliance retailers to showcase their shiniest wares. Most were as grounded in fact as cartoon family man George Jetson’s stilt-legged house in the sky. But some ideas — such as kitchens complete with screens to display recipe instructions step-by-step, and fold-away home gymnasiums — have come to pass with the aid of modern technology. As, for now, have robotic butlers and maids, though 1950s sci-fi did predict both the automatic vacuum cleaner and the self-driving lawn mower, both available in stores today. Robotics may have a way to go, but creations like Honda’s ASIMO can already tackle stairs and pour drinks. The truly modern home is hardwired for 2015. Hidden stereo speakers connect via Bluetooth with the music device in your pocket. Your mobile phone or tablet can control the temperature via heat pumps, the window tinting with photosensitive LCD glass, and your fridge can call for

a top up of milk or eggs via the world wide web. Entertainment is no longer a matter of collecting vinyl, CDs, VHS cassettes or DVDs. Some of you may have to explain to younger readers what some of those things are! Apple have redesigned their Apple TV platform, while services like Netflix are poised to outstrip regular telly, with on-demand content now king. More important than anything is bandwidth with most homes now supporting on average six permanently connected devices (think phones, Playstation, smart TV, PC, Laptop, iPad and more), a powerful router is needed to ensure coverage throughout the home. With home theatre, kitchen appliances and even the garage door able to be controlled via the net, perhaps the next gadget needed for the modern home will be a device to remember all of those 24-digit passwords! ¢

This equinox occurs the moment the Sun crosses the celestial equator — the imaginary line in the sky above the Earth’s equator — from north to south. This happens on Wednesday September 23 at 8.22pm this year when the sun shines directly on the equator and the length of day and night is nearly equal. “The museum’s three-day celebration of light and light-based technologies will include exciting public talks, science and technology demonstrations, handson activities and ‘Light-matters’ kits for participants to take home to continue their exploration,” said CEO of The Kauri Museum, Lisa Tolich. “The gala is a fantastic example of how museums can fulfill their role as science communicators, inspiring a new generation of scientists and technology professionals, including those who are fascinated in the field of photonics. “The 21st century is shaping up to be the age of science and technology of light, much in the same way that the science and technology of electronics transformed our lives in the 20th century.” Illuminating New Zealand celebrates 2015 as the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies in New

Zealand and the festival is presented by the Illuminating New Zealand team, which recently received funding from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment’s Unlocking Curious Minds Contestable Fund. “The team have been blown away by the interest from local

schools with both the Thursday and Friday fully subscribed. We are looking forward to hosting friends and families on the public gala day on Saturday September 26 from 9am-3pm at 5 Church Road, Matakohe.” ¢

“This is a new venture for Kaiwaka to raise funds for classroom equipment and information communication technology,” says organiser Clare Borck. The Kaiwaka Sports Complex will be decked out with a masquerade theme. There will be live music performed by local band Midnight Hour — the Commitments Tribute Show. “Formal attire and a mask are required but we

don’t expect people to go out and buy a new dress, just come dressed up and enjoy time with the community and get involved. “There will be prizes for the best mask and the best costume. This is the first of many more themed balls to come. We are looking forward to seeing the community get involved, come out and have a great evening while supporting

the school. It’s a good opportunity to dig out those glad rags, and have fun, dance and let your hair down. The students will be making masquerade masks which will be available for purchase at the door. They will be designed and created by the students as part of their art studies.” Tickets are available at the Kaiwaka School or Jaques Four Square for $25 per person. ¢

AUTO

Balancing performance and style u by Andy Bryenton

Modern auto trends emphasise bold and aggressive wheels — up to 24 inches in diameter, tucked under show cars from every major manufacturer at auto shows and salons. Emulating this image can come at the expense of performance and, indeed, at the cost of basic safety. A good set of alloys can make a vehicle look fantastic. But if your aim is to actually drive, rather than to simply admire the lines of your hot ride, it’s best to consult the professionals when choosing and fitting new ‘footwear’ for your car. The experienced team of tyre techs at Gas and Tyre gave us some tips on choosing the best combo of width, profile and rubber to compliment your vehicle and your driving style. First, it’s important to check your clearance. A massive rim may look great, but if the tyre fitted to it rubs on the guards (or even, in extreme cases, on the shock assembly), a blowout is on the cards. The full combination of mag and tyre dictates the rolling diameter of the wheel ideally, this will add up to

just on the ‘factory standard’ shipped with the car when it was built. In this way, not only will your fresh new rubber not evaporate when at full lock or when the back seat is full of passengers — you’ll also maintain the calibration of your speedometer. Great for staying on the right side of the law! Another point to consider is the reality of your daily drive. The twisting, often potholed and poorly surfaced roads of the Kaipara are no race circuit, so cars with massive camber, slammed shocks and radically low profile tyres will simply not survive the distance. Uneven tyre wear, lack of grip in the wet, and the possibility for impacts which dent the rim itself all multiply if style is set over function.

NEW VEHICLES

Getting the look is one thing, but getting the right tyre is just as important, if not more so. Racing drivers would agree — compound, tread pattern and pressure are huge factors in determining power to the ground. Once you’ve chosen from the range of Advanti, Enkei, Konig or other top brands, match your rubber to the power output of your car. Rear wheel drive, front wheel

drive, four wheel drive or indeed, off road trucks — all take different rubber, and your tyre specialists can advise on the combination of mags and tyres which will provide better grip, launch, cornering, and more horsepower to the tarmac. Remember that your contact patches where the rubber meets the road are no bigger than the surface of your palm! ¢

Charging through the rough stuff u by Andy Bryenton

It’s been a damp winter to say the least followed up by a rainy spring in the North. While for many people this means full water tanks and irrigated gardens, for others it means acres and acres of mud. For many people and many machines this is a real obstacle. But for others, such as the Can Am Outlander L’XMR, it’s more of a natural habitat. Because this particular quad is an exercise in engineering to tackle the very worst conditions nature can cook up, using that old fashioned recipe of dirt and precipitation. Built around a powerful 48 horsepower Rotax 570 engine, the MR in the new Outlander’s name stands for ‘mud ready’, and boy, is it ever. From it’s appropriately named Mudzilla tyres to the remounted radiator sitting high atop a burly roll bar front, the Outlander’s messy ‘cousin’ is built to plunge into terrain where even big off road buggies fear to tread. While the big, reworked single overhead cam, fuel injected mill pumps out the power, the rider sits high and dry, with raised footpegs providing a perch as the Outlander wades through deep boggy puddles and churned up trails. Power alone is not enough to conquer terrain this messy. Massive suspension travel, an auto locking front differential and three mode power steering have all been deployed to transfer that power to the ground without slipping and

wheelspin. As a package, the lighter, more agile 570 surpasses its 650cc predecessor, proving that when the going gets tough it’s smart design pays dividends, not necessarily tons of grunt. With a very specific focus, the Outlander L’XMR is obviously an exercise in that kind of designfocused engineering. But lessons learned from creating such a machine which is primarily aimed at the competitive sports market are all carried through to the working family of Outlander stablemates. Certainly, the same mantra holds true from the world of performance cars innovations made to eke out seconds on the track inevitably improve your daily driver. Preserving brigade history u by Ayla Miller

Dargaville volunteer fire fighters have recently completed restoring the very first fire engine supplied by the New Zealand Fire Service to the Dargaville brigade in 1980. Dargaville’s deputy chief fire officer Michael Ross says the truck will be used as a promotional vehicle for open days, and will be kept at the Kaipara Vintage Machinery Club for the public to appreciate. “It’s awesome to be able to keep one of these appliances. A lot of them are getting scrapped these days and there won’t be many around for people to have a look at.” “A big thank you to Gillespie Panel Beaters who worked on it at their cost,” Mr Ross says.

The 1979 Dodge fire engine came to Dargaville new and was the first diesel power fire engine for the brigade and first appliance to be fitted with high pressure hose reels for Dargaville. The appliance was the last of five similar appliances that were provided to the Northland Volunteer Fire Brigades including Kaikohe, Kaitaia, Paihia and Kerikeri. The truck served 16 years with the Dargaville Brigade before transferring to Russell in 1996 working as their number two pump until 2005.

p Kaipara Vintage Machinery club volunteers, Dargaville Primary students and parents pose with the recently restored 1979 Dodge fire engine

From then on the truck was put to work as a relief appliance around Northland. In 2007 the Dodge fire engine was purchased by the Far North District Council for $9.20 and was placed in service at Towai Volunteer Rural Fire Force. In 2009 the FNDC principal rural

fire officer Lance Johnston and fire service station officer Damian Southorn arranged to have the appliance returned back to the Dargaville Volunteer Fire Brigade to be restored to its original state, for the centennial which was celebrated in 2014. ¢
