p More than 200 Kaipara school kids raced up and down hills and over fences in the Northern Wairoa schools cross country championship last week. Organiser Wayne Steele from Tangowahine School says the event was a great success. The venue at Dargaville Racecourse allowed many parents to come along and cheer for their children. Although the ground was soft and slushy, the rain stayed away and the event took place under sunny skies. Mr Steele says the children had a great time, appreciating the absence of rain. The event was divided into age groups. The senior students ran 2.8km with some completing the course in under 10 minutes.

Just days before being named winner of the painting prize at the Gilmore Brown Art Awards, Mrs Gough was chosen as the official artist for the Tour of New Zealand Cycle Race. The eight-day tour takes place in April 2015. It is actually two events, with cyclists leaving from Cape Reinga or Bluff and heading for Wellington.

Mrs Gough says she got the commission after race director Peter Yarrell stayed in Dargaville’s Commercial Hotel where some of her works are displayed. Mr Yarrell bought three of them. “He rang me and asked me if I would like to exhibit in Picton where he’s from.” Mrs Gough removed the back seat from

her car, put in 50 paintings, drove to Wellington and took the ferry. The exhibition was in Mr Yarrell’s home. He invited 80 friends for a social event and gave them the chance to view Mrs Gough’s works. Twenty-three of them sold. continued on page 3 …

The Lunchbox

A mistaken delivery in Mumbai’s famously efficient lunchbox delivery system connects a young housewife to an older man in the dusk of his life as they build a fantasy world together through notes in the lunchbox.

If I Stay

A sweeping American romantic drama, centred around the family of Mia, a cellist and ex-girlfriend of up and coming rock star Adam Wilde. The story unfolds after the family’s car crashes in snowy conditions, leading to a series of flashbacks which reveal the past of Mia’s relationship with Adam, and that of her parents, leading to a decision that’s literally life or death.

The Last Saint

Minka is a teenage Polynesian boy living in the heart of the city. With his P-addicted mother well on the way to going completely off the rails, three people enter his life - each with a promise - each with the power to destroy. Powerful Kiwi film-making with heart.

Aunty and the Star People

Jean Watson, recently turned 80 years old, is a Kiwi novelist who lives in Wellington and is well regarded in the literary community. But half a world away, in the poor region of Tamil Naidu in India, she is revered as ‘Aunty’, the lady who has given hope to a generation of orphans, by setting up homes for them and funding their school studies. A touching documentary, following the life of an everyday ‘saint’ from New Zealand.

The Dark Horse

The true story of Genesis Potini, a Kiwi chess genius who was institutionalised with severe bipolar disorder. Upon being released, he goes to live with his patched-gang-member brother, and decides to teach the youth of Gisborne the game of chess in a bid for the national champs.

 Paparoa School’s Possum Purge this weekend was a wet affair, but still a successful event. With a record 39 teams entered, there was a gala atmosphere at the school, with face-painting, bouncy castles and a sausage sizzle keeping everyone happy. The winning team were Hazard County Henchmen, made up of Chris Hickey, David Byles, Lachlan Sidwell, Aidan Hickey and Laine Hickey with Liam Hickey absent, with principal Kim Tavinor. The team accounted for 168 of the weekends total 886 possums.

Top young talker  Some of the best young talkers in the Kaipara showed their style at the Northern Wairoa Schools Speech Competition held at the Lighthouse in Dargaville. Ten young speakers from the area’s primary schools entertained an audience of more than 80 last Wednesday. After a long deliberation the judges awarded the top prize to Amy Lawrence from Maungaturoto School for her speech on why people shouldn’t eat fast food. Bernard Gough from the Dargaville Rotary Club presented Amy with her trophy.

The Hundred Foot Journey

Madame Mallory runs a celebrated French restaurant - but is dismayed and threatened when the Kadam family open up their own ethnic eatery across the street. Sensibilities and cultures clash, until an unlikely twist of fate brings the warring chefs together.

Housebound

Another cracker of a Kiwi horror flick, in the tradition of Peter Jackson’s early work. Sentenced to house arrest, Kylie is forced to move in with her parents, who seem strangely cheerful about the prospect of their home being haunted. Winner of the coveted HR Giger prize at horror’s ‘Dead by Dawn’ festival.

The 100 Year Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared

With a title like that, you know that this Swedish comedy is going to be offbeat and weird - and you would be right! When Mr Karlsson ‘escapes’ from an old folks’ home on his 100th birthday, there’s an added cause for concern. He’s not only out to recapture his youth, he’s also one of the world’s top experts on explosives.

Guardians of the Galaxy

A rag-tag band of interstellar thieves and assassins must save the galaxy from the clutches of an evil warlord. With cutting edge FX and cutting sarcasm, this is a comical rollercoaster ride of action which will appeal to fans of fellow Marvel flick ‘The Avengers’

20,000 Days on Earth

Drama and reality combine in a fictitious 24 hours in the life of musician and international cultural icon Nick Cave. With startlingly frank insights and an intimate portrayal of the artistic process, the film examines what makes us who we are, and celebrates the transforming power of the creative spirit.

p Dargaville’s emergency services are better off thanks to two $1000 donations from the town’s Rotary club. The money was presented to the Northern Wairoa committee of St John and to the Dargaville Volunteer Fire Brigade by Dargaville Rotary president Brian Burnett. Mr Burnett noted St John is a service that helps everyone in the community and proved its worth in the recent storms. Mr Burnett also commended the brigade for its work during the storms and noted it served the community 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Mr Burnett is pictured with John Tillick from St John.

After almost five decades in the building trade, Maungaturoto builder Kelvin James has hung up his hammer and apron. Mr James, who has been director of Brogan Builders for the last 32 years, was farewelled by his colleagues, suppliers and customers at a function held at the Maungaturoto Fire Station. He started in the trade when he left school at 15. He retires after 49 years as a builder, although he is not concerned about not making it to the big five-O. “My hip can’t take it anymore. I’ve had one hip replaced and I’m p Kelvin and Maree James about to have a second. I’m getting the brickwork, and put on the roof. Now out at the right time.” we get people to do that.” Kelvin says the trade has changed In his retirement Mr James hopes to hugely in his time. “In the old days we have more time for fishing, although he did everything. We’d dig the footings, won’t rule out some home renovations. ¢

p Dargaville artist Pauline Gough in her studio

Mr Yarrell says it was an easy decision to offer Mrs Gough the chance to be race artist. “She’s a wonderful person. She’s very, very perceptive — she gets things in one.” He says many top international sporting events, such as the British Open Golf Championship and the America’s Cup, employ official artists. Being race artist means Mrs Gough will have to do two paintings a day for eight days. One will be from the North Island where she will accompany the riders. The other will be from the South Island, where a photographer will email a photo from the day’s riding. “She’s up to it. She’s a very quick painter.”

Mr Yarrell says at the end of the race all her paintings will be auctioned with proceeds going to the Unicorn Foundation which does research into pancreatic cancer. Mrs Gough says she was delighted to accept Mr Yarrell’s offer. “I’ll try anything.” Working on the road away from her studio will be a challenge. But she believes she’ll be up to it. “As long as I get a few hours on my own, I’ll be OK.” She will be accompanied by husband Simon who will be riding the tour. p Water-skiing to success — Baden Curel in action

The fourteen year old is the first Dargaville waterskier to qualify for the New Zealand championships in more than 20 years and he is currently gearing up for another action packed season. “Baden has four ski schools that he needs to get to this year, a three-tournament event at Wanganui and also the nationals,” said his mum, Donna Powell. “He went from not being able to run a course at qualifying speed of 37km per hour at start of season, to a personal best of four at 52km per hour by end of season. That’s an improvement of 34 buoys, which is a massive achievement and proof of his commitment.” A member of the Kai iwi Lakes Water Ski Club, Baden became interested in the sport after his family bought a boat and he learnt to waterski while camping at the lakes. “The Kai Iwi Lakes club has been fundamental in getting Baden to where he is today, and that with the new season approaching they would welcome

any potential new members.” Currently, Baden is the only Dargaville High School student who is a member of the club. During the colder months, he travels to the Whangarei Ski Club twice a week for training. Baden’s strongest and favourite event is the jump but he also competes in slalom and trick jumps. He won the slalom and jump events at 2013/14 Northland Regional Ski champs. Last week, Baden was nominated by his school for the 2014 ASB Northland Secondary Schools Sports Awards. Donna is organising a fundraising hangi to assist with Baden’s waterskiing expenses during the 2014/15 season. Hangi meals can be purchased for $10 each and will be ready for delivery or pick up from 12.30pm on Monday, September 22. All enquiries to Donna Powell on 021 175 8850. p Trevor Brljevich sends up the first bowl of the season

Bowls New Zealand president Ann Muir and Bowls Northland president Jeanette Yovich were special guests. Several speakers spoke of the changes that have taken place over time. But the largest change was allowing women bowlers to form a club using the existing green. Today the club is well known for the many tournaments it hosts on its highquality Astroturf greens; and for its clubroom facilities at the Maungaturoto Country Club.

This special day was also the 2014/15 opening day for the season. Patroness Valda Mann sent up the first kitty of the year and Patron Trevor Brljevich delivered the first bowl. Club member Ron McCallum was honoured by a green being named after him. as thanks for the work he had put in over the last 30 years. This included sponsoring his own tournament for 25 years, and fundraising for the establishment of new artificial greens.  ¢

The Hakaru Pony Club is celebrating four decades of success which have produced riders with a life-long interest in all things equestrian and the club has extended an invitation for friends and supporters to join in the 40th anniversary celebrations. The club was formed by Christine and Bill Bygrave in 1974 and over the ensuing years hundreds of youngsters have learned riding skills and developed an affinity with horses.

Club spokesperson Julie Ryne says they also have an active adult rider’s group passing on skills to the younger set, and these will be on show when the anniversary isl be marked next Sunday The events get underway at 12.30pm and the afternoon’s activities will include pony rides and riding displays, while old photos and trophies will be on show at the club grounds on Settlement Rd, Kaiwaka, just off the KaiwakaMangawhai Rd. ¢

Dargaville Lions Club presented Big River FM with a donation last week which will help the radio station purchase two emergency power generators. Big River FM also held a trivia night this month, in the wake of a storm that caused several thousand dollars worth of electronic damage to hardware at the station’s transmitter sites. Thirteen teams took part in the event, which raised $1,800 and was won by the Bright Sparks team. The total cost for purchasing the two new generators is expected to be about $16,000. Big River FM station manager Anaru Tana says “We are determined to raise this money ourselves, without

the need to source funding, and we’ve made a good start.” “In terms of the trivia night, the response from local businesses was exceptional. We were thrilled by the enthusiasm and we are very grateful.” ¢

Jack Fannon

The retirement of a Dargaville icon

Seven decades of superb service  by Brian Eastwood

“Jack Fannon’s is closing down.” That rumour spread quickly around town, but after more than ten decades of the firm doing business in Victoria Street it seemed that it couldn’t possibly be true. And it isn’t true. Jack Fannon Ltd has been sold and the new owners take over on October 1st.

Three quarters of a century serving the public of Dargaville - that deserves our fullest appreciation!

Owner Jack says, “At 90 years old it’s time to go. I have plenty to do with a big garden, things to do around home and involvement with the Convent School and Catholic Church.” He started in the shop aged 18 years and has been there ever since, except for time in the army and air force. The retirement of a Dargaville icon

Jack, you’ve made Dargaville a better place to live for nearly three quarters of a century. Congratulations on the occasion of your retirement, and best wishes from all of us here at the Kaipara Agri Centre

but in its heyday there were ten lady and men tailors. Almost half the shop was a work room,” says Jack. Before a hospital was built in Dargaville, Williams, Ball and Fannon was the ‘go to’ place if you needed the St John ambulance during business hours. Emergency calls went straight there from the telephone exchange. Jack remembers, “In those days it was almost a compulsory requirement to be in St John if you wanted a job here.” He joined St John as an ambulance cadet in 1942 and went on to serve for more than twenty years. rugby player himself, Jack became a regular St John officer on duty at the park after his retirement from the game. When St John started a blood donor bank in 1951, not surprisingly, it was Williams Ball and Fannon who ran the register and call out system. At a Justice of the Peace Association luncheon in 2007 Jack Fannon was made an Honorary Life Member. Presenting the award Patron Mr. Len Lulich said, “Jack was first a J.P. in 1967 and has always been easily approached in his menswear shop. You could almost say he is Mr. Dargaville J.P.”

The retirement of a Dargaville icon

New owners hope to build on Jack’s success  by Colin Patterson

The new owners of Jack Fannon’s menswear store say their lack of experience in the trade is no great disadvantage. The iconic Dargaville business has been bought by Kate Smith and her daughter Emma, who is a lawyer with local firm WRMK lawyers. The pair take over the reins on October 1. “I’m a jack of all trades,” says Kate. “My husband had a beef and lamb farm.”

Emma worked in retail while studying for her legal qualifications. That included a period with Brightwells, a Dargaville menswear store. Nevertheless, they agree their purchase is a huge leap of faith. “Our driving force was that we did not want to see another store in Dargaville

While menswear is a completely different kettle of fish from the law and farming, both women believe they are up to the challenge. “Not having a full background in menswear doesn’t preclude success,” says Kate. “Lots of people change backgrounds in business and are still successful.” Emma believes the business has good Daughter Emma (left) and mum Kate Smith have bought Jack prospects. “Menswear is Fannon’s menswear business and take over on October 1 one of the largest growth industries worldwide. Your journey to BUILDING or RENOVATING

Finishing touches to complete a home The walls are up, the roof is on, the carpets are down, and it’s time to take the keys in hand for your new build. Over the last three weeks we have looked in depth at the possibilities and pitfalls of building and renovation, including resource consent, project management and more. Now, as the tradies drive away for the last time, it’s time to put a unique personal mark on your new home. A big part of this begins outdoors, with the garden setting surrounding your home. Once a muddy wasteland filled with offcuts and builders’ vans, this can now be transformed into an oasis of calm. After a renovation or addition, altering the gardenscape can let in natural light to fresh spaces, or present new and more pleasant views. Inside, the whole home will take on character as you select furniture and drapery to fit your own vision and your own lifestyle. From austere glass and black leather to rustic charm or colourful contemporary, the choice of appliances, furniture and window coverings is a big one — turning your blank canvas into a work of art. It’s the final transformation which will make your build come to fruition

exactly as you’ve planned — and if you’ve followed the advice of our contributors, you should be on budget, on time, and ready to move in before the Christmas holidays catch up with us all! Best of luck, and remember — good advice on all matters of building and renovating is only a phone call away with many professionals on hand to see you through. ¢

Rangers reunion celebrating success  by Andy Bryenton

Reunions can sometimes be a fraught occasion — there’s always someone from your old sports team or school who you know is going to embarrass themselves with fibs about their stellar career and supermodel spouse. There will be no such problems at the second annual Ranger Reunion — a gettogether for owners of New Zealand’s most popular ute. That’s mainly because this is a reunion of a different kind. We all know of car clubs for vintage and classic marques — the ones which attract studious, sometimes obsessive types who can tell you all the gear ratios of the 1960s Ferrari grand tourers, or source you the door liners for a Triumph Stag. This is something else again — a celebration of Ford’s wildly successful Ranger ute, bringing together Ranger owners from all walks of life and from all over the Kaipara and beyond. It’s the brainchild of Dargaville Ford’s Lindsay West, and it’s safe to say that there will be less of a swap meet atmosphere at this one-marque auto event, and more of the feeling of a movie premiere. That’s because the Ranger is a bit of a sensation. Some have equated it with Apple’s iPhone in terms of its ubiquitous cool, as you’re as likely to find this double-cab, turbo-diesel machine in a farmer’s paddock as outside a suburban

home in Auckland. Only the name Ranger has carried over from the beefy workhorse pickup trucks first brought out by Ford USA in the early 80s. The local iteration replaced the Ford courier in 1998, but it is the latest, post 2011 incarnation of the brand which has won, as the Americans would say, the hearts and minds of Kiwis. The motoring press have awarded the Ranger vehicle of the year, and it has topped figures for the most bought ute month after month. This year’s grueling custom built obstacle course at Mystery Creek Fieldays was just another way that Ford looked to prove that the ute which has the manners of their Falcon sedan on tarmac can also wade, scramble and slog with the best of them. The Ranger Reunion, now in it’s second year, has a list of hundreds of local owners to call on, inviting them down to hear about new developments from Ford, to take a look at a host of customisation options, and to see what the future may hold. It’s all on October 10th at Dargaville Ford — and it promises to be a great celebration of the nation’s favourite ute. ¢

Suzuki’s king reigns on  by Andy Bryenton

INTEREST

One of the easiest mistakes to make when designing a new ATV quad is to scrap components and features which made people like the original model in the first place. Sophistication may seem like a fine thing in a brochure, but in the rough and tumble world of farming there’s something to be said for the tried and true approach. Take the no-nonsense old Land Rover Defender for example. The ‘new money’ in rural England might get about in Porsche Cayenne turbos, but when the Lord of the Manor wants to shoot game, he gets out the knobbly-tyred old series 2. Many a fancy machine has been dragged out of the mud here, too, by something more rough around the edges. All of this analogy is leading up to a compliment for the hard-working little 300cc King Quad. You see, it hasn’t been overhauled in a few years now, and the Suzuki R and D boys have a reason for that. Or two. One is the fact that the ruggedly competent 2004 model has been a steady seller with farmers, who tend to vote with their wallets on what is durable and gets the job done. The second is that, in terms of a sweet balance between fuel economy, lightness and agility the King Quad 300 hits the nail on the head for Kiwi farming conditions. The willing little 280cc mill with it’s single Mikuni carb is not in the domain of rocket science, but it has proven awfully hard to kill. Likewise, the transmission’s addition of a super-low range for bags of pulling power has become a farm favourite. A big hearty reserve of midlow-range torque in general is just what cattle farmers need to navigate muddy

fields, and this is what the little Suzuki delivers, making chores like shifting the herd that little bit easier. The King Quad made it’s debut in the early 1990s, and very little has been changed in terms of the basic platform. Indeed, a radical redesign is actively resisted by Suzuki, who have learned the big lesson of the VW Beetle. The original was built from the 1940s up until very recently. It was the national taxicab of Mexico and Brazil, survived in the Amazon and the Sahara — but the new Beetle already looks a bit last century. Suzuki hope that the King Quad — like the DR200 Trojan 2-wheeler — remains evergreen in Kiwi pastures. ¢

Two world championships on one wheel  by Colin Patterson

Successfully defending her world championship title was an ‘amazing experience’ for Dargaville teen Sam La Hood. Sam, 17, made it two in a row last month at the UNICON 17 World Unicycling championships in Montreal, Canada. She previously won the title at the 2012 championships in Italy. Sam says she expected tough competition in Montreal and that is what eventuated. Despite her success, Sam says winning titles is not what drives her. “I unicycle for fun. That’s how I practise. I don’t have a strict practise schedule.” It’s the adrenalin of competition that really drives her. “I really like competition. When I compete I know there’s nothing holding me back.” She says the championships were held at a college on the outskirts of Montreal, with all the competitors living together for two weeks.

“Pretty much all I did was unicycle and hang out.” However, the championships received little coverage in local media. Sam and most of her fellow competitors had to pay their own way. “Unicycling is a pretty small sport.” Now back in NZ, Sam spends most of her time in Kaikohe where she and fellow world champion Christian Huriwai run Hippo Cycles. But she makes regular visits to Dargaville to see family and to practise. “The skate park is awesome.” Longer term, Sam has her sights set on the 2018 world championships in Spain. But she’s aware she’ll need some new tricks to stay at the top. “It’s fun to see how far you can keep pushing the envelope.” ¢
