The hazardous two single-lane ‘band-aid’ bridges on State Highway 12 near Matakohe that form the southern gateway into the western Kaipara are “a safety and economic risk,” says Northland MP, Mike Sabin “There are significant areas in Northland that are safety and economic risks and Matakohe bridges are on the top of my list to address,” he says. Bridge users say work carried out over the decades on the Hardies and Anderson bridges has consisted of a series of patch-ups and they continue to lobby for a more permanent solution. Another public meeting on the issue is being held on Wednesday, October 17 at the Matakohe War Memorial Hall at 7pm. Mr Sabin identifies a contributing factor to the current situation as “the local government structure in Northland and the impact this has had on roading priorities — as determined by the Northland Roading Committee.” “There is a high possibility of a change in the local government model/structure in Northland in the near future as the local government reforms roll through, a more effective platform will develop for our roading strategy locally with a more over-arching and less disjointed approach,” Mr Sabin added. Former Kaipara District Councillor, Bill Guest, says his fellow ‘Kaipara Can’ candidates in the last local body elections dubbed the crossings “the band-aid bridges”. Mr Guest is also Operations Director of Farmers of New Zealand, and says “the economic lifeblood of Kaipara is at stake here. A crash on the bridges cuts

 One of the two single-lane crossings near Matakohe, dudbed ‘the band-aid’ bridges

the community in two. It’s only a matter of time before a big transporter takes a bridge right out. And it’s not rocket science or millions of dollars. Simple box culverts could carry two lanes of traffic. We are not looking at an immediate multi-million dollar bypass.” At a bridge meeting earlier this year with a representative from the New Zealand Transport Agency a number of short term remedies were discussed. “But overall it was disappointing,” said co-organiser, Dennise Brownlie. Mangrove trimming at Hardies Bridge was one of the short term measures

recently undertaken by the NZTA to improve sightlines on the approaches. This involved temporary roading for heavy machinery to operate. But bridge-users believe that the maintenance money spent over the years would be better allocated to a long-term solution. “While we’re grateful for what’s been done it doesn’t solve the problem long term — the mangroves will simply grow back again. The state of the deck of the bridge is also very bad, there are potholes and bare boards,” says Mrs Brownlie. continued on page 3 . . .

Twenty-seven singers from Kaipara, aged from six to sixty plus, performed recently at the Northland Performing Arts Festival in Whangarei and many brought home trophies while others tell of success stories ‘‘I’m delighted for their achievements. They all worked really, really hard and did so well,” says vocals teacher, Maura Flower. She says that she encouraged all her students to enter no matter how far along their singing journey they may be. “You commit to doing a song which gives you a focus and you stick with it and make it as good as it can be.” In her 60s, it was Fay Wilson’s first time entering the competition and she was a mixture of nerves and excitement. “It was the most stressful, tense, nerve racking, dreadful — yet at the same time exciting thing I’ve been involved in — I never thought I’d have the confidence to do something like that, it gave me a sense of achievement and I want to enter next year” Maungaturoto resident, Kayla Joyce,

won Vocal Championship for 12 and under. “I didn’t expect to win but it felt really cool when it happened.” Kayla’s other successes include playing a major role, Princess Piggy, in the up and coming pantomime, The Three Little Pigs, at the Otamatea Repertory Theatre and she also gained a scholarship for performing arts. Dargaville resident, Anna Marie-Cutts says that a highlight was getting second in the ‘classical song’ category despite almost losing her voice due to a cold. “In the judge’s appraisal she said, ‘your stageability is endless’.” The group returned to Kaipara with their teacher singing their praises, “All my students are favourites and they all hold a special place in my heart,” adds Maura. See www.thelifestyler.co.nz for a full list of Kaipara’s singing achievements.

Roller Mills update

Count down is now on… The 2012 Northland Roller Mills rugby squad have started to gel as a team with a few pre-tournament games now under their belt. It was a tough weekend at Waipu going up against the strong Auckland East and Auckland West teams with a loss to both those teams. However, there were positives to come out of these important warm up matches. Coach Maurice Colley commented “the boys now understand the level of intensity that is required to win the Roller Mills tournament. Importantly, by the second game the boys were able to match the opposition’s intensity as the game wore on.” Historically, the Northland team has found the pre-tournament games tough, but find they provide a good basis for often much stronger performances during the tournament. The team travels to Papakura, Auckland, this weekend for their final pre-tournament game against Counties Manukau. This will be an important comparison to see that the team can follow through on what they learnt from last weekend’s hit outs. We have been approached by NRM who are so kindly running a promotional fundraiser for our Squad. We are begging

all Northland Farmers to purchase NRM specified products through Farmlands: Dargaville, Kaitaia and Waipapa between the period of 10th — 21st September 2012. They are willing to donate $1.00 for every Moozlee, Grow Up 20%, Grow Up 16%, Ready Rumen, or Power Whey. If every farmer in the Northland Region gets behind this promotion it would be massive for our squad. We would love your support! The rugby community from the top half of the North Island will descend on the Teachers Eastern Rugby Club in Orakei on September 29th to witness the 83rd running of the annual Roller Mills Rugby Tournament. This tournament has seen many famous New Zealand rugby players including current All Blacks Sonny-Bill Williams, Kevin Mealamu and Richard Kahui. Any messages of support can be posted on the Northland Roller Mills Facebook page. The players would love to hear from the support base in Northland. We want a sea of Northland blue jerseys to flood Auckland! If you would like to know more about opportunities to support the 2012 Northland Roller Mills rugby team you can contact the Northland Rugby Union on 09 438 4743, Mark Anderson on 09 405 8214 or Catherine Stewart on 027 356 5031.

New church for whole community “Come along and have your say” A new Christ the King Anglican Church is being constructed in Mangawhai and is set to become a facility for the whole community to use

That’s the message from Bruce Crompton and the members of Ruawai’s business community as they prepare for a public meeting about the future of the town

One of the co-priests in charge of the Paparoa Parish, who has responsibility for Mangawhai and Hakaru, the Reverend Dianne Hawken, said “We are excited about the possibilities that this new church complex will open up and we look forward to the development of community activities, especially for children and families.” The new building has an eye-catching raised roof with an octagonal worship area extending into a hall. There are folding doors in between the worship centre and the hall so large numbers can be accommodated. The church is being built next to the existing old church which dates back to

On September 25th the Ruawai hall will be open from 7:30pm as locals discuss plans to beautify the town, improve security and attract more business from motorists travelling through from Dargaville to Maungaturoto. On the agenda are plans to erect decorative banners and brand Ruawai as a ‘gateway’ town — the threshold of the Kauri Coast. Also mooted are plans to beautify existing features of the community, such as the median gardens, gazebo and main street. Transit NZ have already sited a pedestrian crossing in the centre of town, and with some small amount of planning and community support the members of the Ruawai promotions and development society envision that their town could become a popular stop-off

the 1800s and has served the parish for over 50 years. It was originally used as a school but when a new school was built in 1956 the Anglican Parish of Paparoa purchased the building and the people of Mangawhai came together to transform it into a place of worship — some gave money while others gave their time and expertise. But now it’s time for the building to find another home and purpose. “The wish of the parishioners is that it will be relocated to the new Mangawhai museum site where it will continue to be used by the community,” says an assisting clergy, Jim Pascoe.

for travellers. With excellent cafes and food already available, this would be a natural progression for Ruawai, the location of this year’s exciting skydiving carnival. The installation of street cameras has also been put forward as a security initiative, in a move supported by the local Community Constable. And of course it’s coming time to plan for this year’s big Christmas parade, too — another chance to showcase all Ruawai has to offer to visitors. If you have big ideas, or if you’re keen to pitch in for your town, please come along and let your voice be heard. Volunteers and hard-working locals have already achieved much to make Ruawai a better place, and a strong community always means a better town to live in.

Bridges pose ‘huge risk’ NZTA’s acting state highways manager for Northland, Steve Mutton, said, “The two bridges are inspected on a regular basis and remain safe for use. The deck of the Hardies bridge is to be replaced before Christmas and the eastern approaches to the bridge are to be improved.” “Factors include the number of vehicles using them every day, along with the number of accidents. In both cases, those numbers are low. The economic benefits any large scale improvements would deliver — like bridge replacement — have to be weighed against the cost of providing those improvements.” A regional transport operator, who asked that his business not be identified, said his drivers are ordered to avoid the bridges, and goods for Kaipara are transhipped at Whangarei. “I’m not putting my plant at risk through those bridges, so of course there’s a bit less traffic,” he said.

Thunderbirds are go! Dargaville is set to host the Ford Thunderbird Owners’ Club convention over Labour Weekend giving residents a chance to view and vote for their favourite classic car Around 15 classic vehicles, based on birds from Native American myths known for their power and strength, will be on display at the Northern Wairoa boating club car park on Saturday, October 20 and again at the Kauri Museum in Matakohe on Sunday October 21. “It’s excellent for the town. The owners will stay in local accommodation, and I’ve booked them on attractions around Dargaville,” says owner of the Dargaville and kauri visitor information centre, Sue Taylor. Organisers of the convention, Angela and Graham Watts, said that their itinerary included a river cruise

on the Daisy, lunch and show at the Kumara Box, a visit to the Packard and Pioneer Museum, as well as the Kauri Museum, and their AGM will be held at the Lighthouse Function Centre. “We live in Warkworth and held a convention there about 10 years ago but this year we wanted to venture out and we chose Dargaville — we found everyone to be most helpful and friendly,” says Angela. There will be a sausage sizzle at the boating club to fundraise for the Kaipara Vintage Machinery club and the car that gains the most votes wins a kauri presentation piece crafted by Rick Taylor.

Paparoa olive groves win gold Owners of Chapel Olive Oil, Verity and Barry Baines, won one gold and two silver awards at the Oliveti gourmet oil competition held recently in Whangarei Thirty-three oils entered from around the country but it was Chapel’s Frantoio, an Italian variety of olive known for its rich and fruity aromas that won the gold. The couple also took away silver awards for another Italian variety, leccino, and a Greek variety, koroneiki oil. Verity said that the oil was judged a little like wine, on its depth and balance of flavours as well as its aroma. “They put the oil into a small glass and warmed it. Then they placed a cap on it to hold in the  Verity and Barry at the Dargaville Riverside Produce Market selling their award winning oil aroma and presented it to the judges who swirled it around and either They moved it up from Remuera, swallowed it or spit it out.” Auckland and made it their home. Holliday Shield winners  The Maungaturoto team bowled away their opponents recently at the Wellsford Bowling Club, winning all five games with a total differential of 60+ and taking away the Holliday Shield for the first time since 1974. Eight teams from the Rodney district battled it out on the green for the prestigious trophy, which was kindly donated by Mr Harry Holliday in 1956. The Maungaturoto bowling team, left to right, Kevin Robinson, Ted Mooney, Dave Orford and Rex Roadley, say ‘it’s been 38 years in the making and it’s nice for the club to get the trophy back for a year.’

Debbie Osborne got more than she bargained for after an impulse buy at Fosters recently. She had popped in on a whim to buy paintings for her recently renovated kitchen and put her name down for a Kaipara Lifestyler promotion. Debbie had forgotten all about that day until she received a ‘you have won’ phone call. The gift hamper contained a hunter’s carry bag from Hunting and Fishing, table lamps from Laser Electrical, a Bob Marley sweater and funky rasta hat from B’arch Wear, a BBQ meat pack

from the Meat Co. valued at $50, a Godfreys fix-it voucher for lawn mower servicing, sipper bottles and jandals from Walden’s Shoes, magazines and stationery from Moran’s Bookshop, a free naturopathic consultation courtesy of A Natural Approach, A wet and dry vac from Mckay 100% Electrical, and a natural health guide plus a therapeutic massage from Health Options. Of course Fosters were there with a matching painting to complement Debbie’s lucky purchase!

Looking after your community in so many ways!

“I think it’s absolutely awesome that the little theatre is doing this and we’re hoping for a sell out show,” says Kaipara Community Health Trust chief executive, Debbie Evans. Shadows, a drama centred around an elderly woman whose past haunts her, is directed by Mike Collins who is no stranger to theatre. “I literally grew up in this theatre, my parents met here, and I’ve lost count of how many productions I’ve been involved in over the years.” He added that Shadows will leave audiences thinking — possibly crying — but they will soon be cheered up by the ‘laugh a minute’ whodunit, The Real Inspector Hound, written by Tom Stoppard.

Debut director, Graham Pollard, also plays the role of Major Magnus and said that while directing and acting was a challenge, everything is coming together and the audience can expect belly laughs and unexpected twists. The show opens on Friday continues on Saturday as well as September 27, 28 and 29 at 7.30pm. Tickets are $20 per adult and $15 per child available at the Dargaville BP or the Dargaville Sewing and Curtain Centre and include a light supper. The Dargaville Little Theatre is also celebrating their 50th Jubilee mid next year and committee members are asking anyone who would like to share their memories to get in touch via facebook or dargavillelittletheatre@gmail.com.

A new 8-piece band in town Mangawhai Beach School has a new band shaping up to perform at the Ag Day festivities over Labour Weekend The 8-piece band consists of students Izayah Frost as lead singer accompanied by singers Kezrah Powley and Julia Pearce, on lead/rhythm guitars are Jack Oldfield and Samuel Marwick, Ben Morley also plays rhythm guitar, while Isaac Jones is on bass

guitar with Houston Steiner on drums. They play mostly rock and swing songs such as I Shot the Sheriff and I Fought the Law. Teacher Aid, Jack Noser, leads the band along with Kapa Haka teacher, Ray Frost, and Principal, Aaron Kemp.

“The talk, by Greg Steward from the government forestry research institute, SCION is on Wednesday September 19,” says museum CEO, Bet Nelley “His research and measurement of small kauri plantations scattered around several regions of the country has shown that some remarkable growth rates can be achieved. This means it is possible to have production forests of kauri in 60 years, perhaps not as fast as pine but our native kauri has other factors in its favour. “These include a higher market value, especially as other island kauri sources dwindle or are being bought up by China and other countries, and being a native species it helps provide corridors for wildlife.” The visit by Mr Steward is to help The Kauri Museum with the establishment of a provenance trial of kauri — the planting of seedlings sourced from a range of locations representing the tree’s natural range . “The aim of the trial is to see how much natural growth variability there is and if there is a particular region perhaps best suited for production trees,” Ms Nelley added. “Our aim is simply to be a demonstration area that anybody can come and see for themselves — school children, farmers, foresters etc. and we are delighted to have the help and advice from Greg.” The details of the design for the trial are still being finalised.

Delicious sushi here to stay Cooking up prizes

Sushi Nara is set to celebrate its second anniversary on September 27 having made a name for itself with friendly service and tasty sushi made with fresh, quality ingredients

Manager and head chef, Joonghyung Jo, along with his wife, Haejung Ma, and three children moved to NZ three years ago. Jo completed a sushi-making course in Korea in 2005 and before moving to Dargaville, managed a sushi shop in Whangarei. “As people have gotten to know we are here, we’ve become busier and now have many regular patrons. Our bestselling sushi is chicken teriyaki and our fresh salmon sushi is also very popular,” says Jo. He says the key to making excellent sushi is the fresh, high quality ingredients.

“Everything is made fresh daily — the salmon and seafood is never frozen. We also use special sauce recipes and ‘secret’ ingredients to add to the flavour.” Haejung Ma has a Masters’ degree in the traditional Korean string instrument, kayagum and is currently in Korea for four weeks performing music concerts. Jo says ‘she would be happy to play concerts for the local community also if anyone wishes.’ Jo is hopeful the family will have their permanent residency within 12 months. “We enjoy living here — it is a safe place for our family to grow up.”

Matakohe School is currently in the running to win a classroom full of kitchen appliances and are asking the community to support them by voting online Celebrity chef Brett McGregor and Parmco have joined forces to get kiwi kids cooking in the kitchen with a programme developed to support the work schools are already doing and provide additional inspiration for students. Schools that register with the programme have the chance to win one of eight Parmco kitchen appliance prize packs. “The children have their own vegetable garden and have started their own orchard and now they’re involved in cooking challenges and have made Thai fish cakes and Marrakech chicken so far,” says principal, Margaret Hutchinson. In one of their final resolutions prior to the appointment of Commissioners, elected Councillors adopted a 2012-2022 Long Term Plan. The Plan sets out Council’s service and capital investment intentions for the next 10 years, and indicates how things will be funded. Munn’s closing, the end of an era

9

 by Brian Eastwood

When new Postmaster Henry Arthur Munn arrived in town in 1929, it was the beginning of a link with Dargaville that is still going strong. He was the first in an extended family of quiet achievers who have lived and worked for more than eight decades in this district His brother, E. R. Munn was appointed Dargaville’s Bank of New Zealand manager in 1932 and served until 1953. The Munn family hailed from Christchurch, arriving there as part of the Canterbury Association. Henry started with the post office at age twelve and worked his way up to become first Postmaster in Kaitaia. George Munn was eldest of his four sons and began working life as an apprentice carpenter in Kaitaia, but for health reasons had to give that up. When in 1936 he heard of a furniture business for sale in his father’s new town, he decided to buy it. Second generation owner Don Munn guesses, “It was probably Grandfather Henry that lent Dad that four hundred pounds to start his business with.” In 1939 George met Alexanderina Catherine Finlayson (always known as Ena), daughter of Donald Finlayson. They married and built a house in what was a new subdivision in Plunket Street. As the years went by George employed his two brothers, Maurice and Reginald, while youngest brother Ken went to live in Whangarei. Don remembers, “Reg became a guest of Adolf Hitler in 1941 after being captured on Crete in World War Two, eventually coming home to work in the shop. Attached to Stalag 8B prison camp hospital, it gave him his lifelong interest

down. “Economic times are tough. We split the firm into Munn’s Flooring Xtra and Munn’s Furniture on 30th September 2006 so we are shutting the furniture shop on 30th September. Our son Shane has decided to take on an outside job for a change, doing vegetation clearance.” Ask Don about retirement and he doesn’t seem too sure. “We will have time to visit family, including son Greg in Hawkes Bay and our daughter Debra. We have a bach at Baylys Beach and we like our fishing, and my wife Noeline and I play and enjoy outdoor bowls.” For Don, Noeline and family it will be a new way of life. It is the end of an era  Edwin George and Alexanderina Catherine Munn on their wedding day

in St John ambulance work. With the late Peter Tremain he helped organise the St John cadet scheme.” George Munn never took on public office, but with Ena he was very involved with the Presbyterian Church. He was a Church elder and a member of Dargaville Rotary Club for 31 years. Don and brother Graeme Munn took over the business in the 1950’s. The original corner shop and today’s Laser Electrical was built by draper Alfred Gregory. C. & A. Morse, with Terry Bradley as foreman, built the present modern looking building in 1975. Now Don Munn says it is time to close

THANK YOU… for 75 years of support and custom …

FINAL CLEARANCE NOW ON! LAST DAYS!

75 YEARS OF SERVICE TO OUR COMMUNITY DESERVES A CELEBRATION Our best wishes to the team at Munn’s Furniture from

and the town owes Munn’s Furniture a big thank-you for their 76 years of service. Although Munn’s Flooring Xtra will still be over the road, it will not be quite the same without Munn’s Furniture on the other corner.

Meet the Flight Centre team and SAVE! ANGELA

After many years working in pharmacy I decided to make a career change, and working in the travel industry was something I always wanted to do. After a few years spent with Air New Zealand I am now enjoying being back in Warkworth and working locally once again. I have spent time living in Australia and travelling through the USA, Canada and the Pacific with my family. I look forward to helping you plan your next holiday.

JESSICA

After growing up at Pakiri Beach I spent time living and travelling around the UK and Australia. I also lived in Ireland for 18 months and my family and I travel back to Ireland every couple of years. We love having a stopover somewhere different on each trip we take, so ask me about stopovers on the way to the UK and Europe. Next month we will be stopping in Dubai on our way home from Ireland.

CHRISS

I have been with Warkworth Flight Centre since we opened in 2005, and prior to that with Flight Centre in Palmerston North. Travel is my passion. I have travelled extensively in Europe and Asia, both independently and with my children. Two of the many highlights for me were Vietnam and China. I have recently returned from my third trip to South America. With its unbelievable natural beauty and diverse cultures, it would have to be my favourite destination. I would love to help you plan your next adventure.

LEANNE

My family and I have lived in the Rodney district for the past nine years. I have travelled and lived in Europe, the UK and Australia and dream of doing a lot more. After ten years working in the wine industry, I have now decided to follow my other passion and work in travel at Warkworth Flight Centre. Come in and talk to me about your next dream trip. I would love to help you make it a reality!

Custom caravans a work of co-operation and skill  by Andy Bryenton

Skilled cabinetmaker and kitchen craftsman Bryce Warmington has created a reputation for quality over the years, installing Custom Kitchens from his Dargaville workshop around the Kaipara and beyond. But when Bryce decided to branch out into a whole new field of endeavour it was with the help of a ‘who’s who’ of Dargaville’s top tradespeople Bryce decided to build custom caravans, seeing a niche in the market which his joinery and cabinetmaking skills could help to fill. The artfully crafted interiors of his first two Summer North brand caravans (named for his daughter, Summer, and the location where they’re built) are a testament to his years of experience, with the best use made of the limited space within to create true ‘homes away from home’. But a caravan is more than just a small, well appointed cabin. And Bryce’s Summer North caravans are even more

specialised than most. Which meant a crew of friends, colleagues and respected tradies had to weigh in to meet Mr Warmington’s exacting standards. From the ground up, Gas and Tyre services provides the right mags and tyres. A & S Repairs welded a sturdy pair of frames. Trailequip were there for all the fitting to get Bryce’s creations on the road safely, while the guards were made by Peter Fowlie and the axles and flares by Greg Smith. Kaipara Agri Centre lent a hand, and then it was on to the professionals at Munns Flooring

Bryce has proven once and for all that the spirit of ingenuity and a can-do attitude are alive and well in Dargaville, and he offers special thanks to all those who have helped

get Summer North caravans rolling. The first finished example sets off for Tauranga this week, with a price tag of approximately $60,000. For those who want a truly custom caravan, Bryce is confident that you’ll find none better than those he builds right here. A family connection to maritime craftsmanship  by Andy Bryenton

Kelly and John Hansen are part of a grand maritime tradition stretching back to the pioneering days of New Zealand. Their ancestor, Captain Hansen, was the commander of the tall ship which brought the Reverend Samuel Marsden to these shores, and to the present day the Hansen family has kept up strong ties with the sea The brothers are proud to carry on the work of their father, Maurice, who learned boat building from an early age, gaining practical skills from the nautical craftsmen of Dargaville in the 1950s. The town on the banks of the Wairoa has seen some of the best shipwrights of the age of sail ply their trade here, and famed vessels such as the Huia and the Hawk were constructed not far from where Kelly and John now have their own workshop and slipway. The days of schooners and clippers racing across the Tasman under clouds of canvas sail may be gone, but a love affair with the ocean is still part of Dargaville’s character — it’s a fine place to set out from for a day of angling or just cruising the picturesque Kaipara Harbour. And while the technology used to construct boats has changed, the passion and skill required to craft a vessel which is safe, speedy and elegant have not. It takes dedication and years of experience to get it right — and that’s what Hansen Marine have on their side. Which is not to say that the brothers haven’t embraced modern technology — as well as lovingly restoring classic wooden boats, they are also master of

the art of turning a fibreglass hull direct from the mould into a custom-made seagoing craft. While the hydrodynamics of the hull have been worked out exactingly in advance, what happens next is entirely up to the customer. As well as building boats and of course  Kelly and John Hansen come from a multi-generational heritage of restoring them to maritime excellence — a tradition they proudly carry on today perfection, Hansen Building a boat from plans and Marine also repair boats and make alterations, incorporating state of the art inspirations to a finished, seaworthy nautical equipment. Modern fish finders, vessel is a real passion for Kelly and GPS, navigation and communications, John, who revel in the challenge of electrical and electronic work are a creating something unique. One can huge part of the job nowadays, and the only assume that the original Captain brothers have hands-on experience here, Hansen would be proud to see a too. Not only boat builders and restorers, fine tradition being carried on by his they have both been charter captains, descendants. and Kelly is a skilled mechanic. This bespoke approach has seen Hansen Marine produce some amazing work over the years, from marlinchasing angler’s boats to a 25-metre superyacht.
