It was billed as an extravaganza, but some of the other words used by patrons of the inaugural Dargaville Arts Association’s Wearable Arts Extravaganza summed up the scope and vision of what proved to be a very memorable two-night event.

‘Stunning’, ‘a tour de force’, ‘amazingly creative’ — the crowd was full of praise for not just the amazing creations on display, but for the entire two-day cultural event which lit up central Dargaville last Friday and Saturday nights. A parade of whimsical, finely crafted costumes spanning categories as varied as our natural environment and creative recycling, this latest addition to Dargaville’s cultural calendar drew sellout crowds for both evenings. Patrons were entertained not just by the artistic talents of our local designers, but also by a full programme combining the Te Kopuru school’s kapa haka group, the skills of Circus Kumarani, the melodies of the Rivertown Singers and Take Six, Dargaville Intermediate’s Urban Haka dance crew, a very convincing Michael Jackson, and a collection of vintage fashions from down the ages. In a contest of visual beauty and creative design which must have been hard to judge, the Kaipara Lifestyler Supreme Award was won by Megan Pitchforth and Margaret Rasmussen’s recycled masterpiece, ‘Queen of Rolls’, an intricate high-medieval dress fashioned from reclaimed cardboard and adorned with lights and colour. Model Enya Hill looked every bit royal in this imaginative work of wearable art. The People’s Choice Award — decided by a combined audience vote from both nights, went to Jackie Butterworth’s baroque-inspired ‘Life’s A Picnic’ —

Work starting on Matakohe bridges u by Paul Campbell

Work is getting underway on the long-awaited replacement of Matakohe’s single-lane Hardies and Anderson bridges on October 5, following an official blessing and cultural induction ceremony for the construction crew. The project, which realigns State Highway 12 and its vital transport link into Kaipara, was more fully outlined at Arapaoa’s Waiaua Marae last Saturday at a function attended by contractors Fulton Hogan, engineers Aurecon, New Zealand Transport Agency, and Te Uri O Hau representatives. Fulton Hogan and Aurecon won the $26.1 million contract work to replace the two bridges at Matakohe. “It’s exciting news,” says Kaipara Mayor Greg Gent. “The bridges have long been a problem in our roading network and with the start date we can look forward to the road realigned and the bridges gone.” The event also ends a long campaign by local people led by Matakohe’s Sue Reyland, who is ‘delighted’ after Saturday’s gathering where some of the construction details were released. “The Kaipara District Council’s signoff of the required resource consents was confirmed, and some amazing construction details. For instance, seven trucks will be bringing up a crane which in turn will build another crane capable of lifting a 33 metre, 50 tonne beam into place.” There will be extensive landscaping of the surrounding area and lookout

points. An an iwi consultant will be on site to look after heritage and ecological matters, Matakohe Creek, Te Mateetetau, is located within the project area and is also a Department of Conservation Reserve. NZTA has enlisted representatives of Te Uri o Hau to monitor all geotechnical investigations and provide cultural input. A shared pathway for pedestrians and cyclists through the area will still be open for public input and there will be a special display to outline the latest project details at the Matakohe War Memorial Hall on October 7, as part of The Matakohe Museum’s Settlers Day activities. The Matakohe bridges carry an average of 1,850 vehicles per day, including approximately 200 heavy vehicles. Economic development unit, Northland Inc, has welcomed the realignment saying the region’s GDP is increasing, new residential building consents are rising, and spending in the region by domestic and international visitors is higher than it’s ever been. Initial works at the realignment location have included geotechnical testing and earthworks will support a short diversion of the state

TV show features Kaipara Kai Iwi bylaw submission hearing u by Joanna Manson

A new television series called Slice of Paradise will feature the Kaipara district during its first episode which airs on TV3 on Wednesday, September 20.

p Peter Wolfkamp and Shelley Ferguson host Slice of Paradise

The show is hosted by Peter Wolfkamp and Shelley Ferguson both from The Block NZ television series. The first episode of the new programme sees young schoolteacher Kevin from North Auckland looking for property around the Kaipara Harbour. He is after a piece of land somewhere north of the city but close enough for

him to commute to his teaching job on the North Shore. In the episode Peter shows Kevin two pieces of land at Tinopai and half an island in the Kaipara. Shelley shows him a section at Kaiwaka, an old house at Tinopai and a piece of land at Paparoa. Slice of Paradise premieres on September 20, 7.30pm. 

The Kai Iwi lakes Navigation Safety Bylaw is now closer to being complete after Northland Regional Councillors Penny Smart, Rick Stolwerk and Paul Dimery heard submissions from the public in Dargaville. Approximately 90 submissions were received. Of the 11 people who spoke to their submissions, all opposed the idea of a swimming only section at Nobbs point, as it has no vehicle access or toilet facilities. Most agreed on Pine beach and Promenade Point being designated swimming areas. Boats only being allowed to go over five knots 200 metres from the shore of Lake Taharoa, which is maritime law, was opposed. Submitters were in favour of a 100 metre restriction, which has been the rule previously. Because of the lake’s size and therefore potential for unsafe congestion, they called on council to ask the director of Maritime New Zealand to make an exception. Boats needing to pay for lake permits was opposed by most, as no other place in Northland requires them and it would be ‘unnecessary bureaucracy’. Trout fishers, including Fish and Game New Zealand, said that the use of powered boats on Lake Waikare should be allowed, at least during winter as fishermen tend to use small, slow boats. Powered boats are currently banned.

Sportsville on its way

Draft Plan open days

u by Anna Harding

u by Joanna Manson

The Kauri Coast Recreational Society have announced that the Dargaville Sportsville facility at Memorial Park will soon be underway, with the building contract signed with the Arco Group, a Whangarei-based construction company.

The Kaipara District Council will be hosting two public open days at Mangawhai on Saturday September 30 and Saturday October 7 to encourage locals to have their say on the proposed recommendations within the Draft Community Plan.

p Kauri Coast Recreational Society chair, Chris Biddles, confirms that the Dargaville Sportsville facility will soon be underway

“We are very happy to have finally got to the point of being able to sign-up Arco, after literally months of hard work in redesigning the building to fit with the funding that we have confirmed,” said society chairman Chris Biddles. “It has certainly been a frustrating time while we have tried to fit the design into the available funding, but we are very happy to now be in a position to start the construction of the facility in the coming months.” Work is still being undertaken by project managers Griffiths and Associates to sign up a contractor to

build the netball and tennis courts. This is expected to occur in the coming weeks. The project has been made possible through grants from Foundation North, $1.033m, New Zealand Lotteries, $650,000, and Pub Charity $178,000. These grants followed initial seed funding from Kaipara District Council $100,000, and local stakeholders $220,000. Mr Biddles stressed there is still a need to continue with local fundraising as there are still smaller aspects of the project that need financing. 

p Greg Gent — Kaipara District Council mayor

For those that can’t attend the Mangawhai Club at 2pm on those days an online portal will be created to ensure feedback is widely received. “The Draft Mangawhai Community Plan offers a potential map for the future of Mangawhai, and we would appreciate feedback from the public to ensure we’re getting priorities right,” said Mayor Greg Gent.

“While the planning group sought feedback for their plan development, council has to go through its own process as well, and will welcome any further community input.” The KDC plan includes proposed dates, budgets and development ideas before a decision on how it can be incorporated into the long term plan 2018/2028 budget process. 

Milestone for local nurse u by Anna Harding

Rosemary Child has worked at the Dargaville Medical Centre as a nurse for 35 years. The centre recently celebrated this milestone with her.

p From the left: nurse Laura Thomson, Doctor Lawrie Herd, nurse Rosemary Child and nurse Hayley Hutton, who along with the rest of the Dargaville Medical Centre, have celebrated Rosemary’s 35th anniversary of working there

“After leaving school I was encouraged to get into nursing by my family. I wanted to be close to my home town, Maungaturoto. I applied in 1969 and I got in, training in Whangarei,” said Rosemary. After training, she worked in Whangarei for a few years, then took time off to have children. “In May 1982 I started at the Dargaville Medical Centre and I’ve been there ever since. What’s kept me here is the people, the work and how it fitted in with my lifestyle as my husband and I had a farm at Pukehuia. “I had a really good beginning here. Hannah Yakas was one of my mentors

and she was a wonderful lady. My main mentor was Doctor Maurice Matich and we worked together for years. He was wonderful to work with and I learned a lot. “When I first started we hand wrote everything and now its total computerisation. That was a major change. Also back then we were cooking equipment in the oven to sterilize and now we’ve got a state of the art autoclave. “It’s a great community and it’s nice to see the generations of people coming through. Over the years I’ve met a lot of wonderful people. The staff here have kept me on.” 

A feast for the senses Equally important were the efforts of the production crew who organised and ran all aspects of the show while transforming Dargaville’s town hall into a glamorous showpiece in its own right, with light, decoration and sound. Patrons enjoyed a fully catered supper during the halftime break thanks to Dargaville High School’s Food Technology department. Planning is already well underway for next year’s event which will be held on September 14 and 15, 2018, and no doubt designers are already planning their masterpieces, inspired by what has been a weekend of artistic magic.

Dargaville Arts Association Chairman Allan Mortensen sums up the mood after two very successful nights: “It was an absolutely amazing show that could hold its head high in any company. The voluntary efforts of the production team — the performers — all certainly give one a great sense of pride, and in fact, with the business sector in town coming up with in excess of 80 sponsors, and having two sellout shows, the entire town of Dargaville should be feeling very proud of themselves. Thank you all, and we look forward to next year with great anticipation.”

Service to Freemasonry

History rocks at school

Well known Dargaville identity, John (Jack) Matthews, was initiated into Masonic Lodge Arapohue No 248 on the 8th September 1947, and after 70 years of ‘active service’ he has been honoured by his peers at a badge ceremony at Okara in Whangarei.

u by Joanna Manson

A play performed by Mangawhai Beach School that incorporates anti-bullying messaging while taking a walk through rock n’ roll history will be on show from September 25.

p The main cast plus understudies of History Rocks

p Grand Master Mark Winger with Jack Matthews after the presentation of a second 10-year bar to his 50-year service badge

With the closure of Dargaville’s Pono Lodge in 2015 Jack joined Okara Daylight Lodge and at 91 he still drives himself from Dargaville to Whangarei and back to attend regular meetings. It was a different scenario in his youth. He told the award ceremony gathering of his early days living at Tangowahine, which was then a major railway workshop. “We would ‘borrow’ a jigger, and putter the 12kms to the Commercial Hotel in Mangawhare as there was no

public transport into town.” There they would all pile into the landlord’s car and head off to Arapohue along some 12kms of unsealed road and over the old wooden bridge across the Northern Wairoa river. On their return they would of course have to ”warm up at the bar of the Commercial in preparation for the return trip on the jigger back to Tangowahine — a mission that could take some time to complete on a cold winter’s night.” 

The play which is titled History Rocks by Rachel Sutherland involves each of the 460 students who attend the school and will be staged over four performances. Producer and director Cherylene Neels alongside Tanya Hampton and Cate Campbell have been hard at work with rehearsals since the first week of term three. “There is two sides to the show. There is an anti-bullying theme about a boy who is bullied at school and we’re talking about how he overcomes it. We’re also talking about the development of music, and reflect on history during the time it came out,” said Cherylene. Songs such as ‘Rock around the Clock’ and Bob Dylan’s ‘Blowing in the

Wind’ are some of the iconic songs that will feature. The performance also involves the school choir, band, and senior students working on lighting and sound behind the scenes. “It’s been a big collaboration. The biggest thing about it is that is gives children who don’t necessarily shine academically a chance to shine on the stage. It’s built up their self-confidence, self-esteem and realisation that they can do this.” Tickets are $5 each from the school office. A matinee performance will take place on September 25 at 11am with September 26, 27 and 28 shows starting at 7pm. 

Creativity coming our way u by Anna Harding

Sixty young people gathered in Dargaville recently to take part in the annual Youth Summit organised by Creative Northland.

The Green party’s Peter Hughes, Labour’s Willow-Jean Prime, National’s Matt King and New Zealand First’s Winston Peters made their election pitches to a Kaipara Grey Power meeting last week.

p This years Northland Youth Summit participants, from all over the region, in the Dargaville town hall

For the two-day event they were divided into workshops covering digital film/video, music, paint and mural, performance and theatre, and 3D projection mapping, with each discipline creating a final piece for a showcase. “It was awesome watching youth who were sceptical at first, come together to co-create. Their smiles at the end — that’s worth a million dollars. They wanted to stay an extra day as ‘this is the best thing we’ve ever done’,” said Creative Northland general manager, Hinurewa te Hau. In the paint and mural workshop, 11 panels were painted and Creative

Northland are looking into having them installed in the Kaipara Community Centre on Hokianga street. The digital film/video participants made a documentary which will be part of a Northland 3D travelling exhibition this summer, visiting around 19 communities. “The fact that we’ve been able to host it in the Kaipara area is pretty cool,” said Hinurewa. “The venues were fantastic, especially having them in a concentrated area. My team were just blown away by the support that was given by the community in general.” 

Candidates were given ten minutes to speak and five minutes of question time, before 45 minutes of general questions. They were asked to address five issues — rural doctors, superannuation from 65-67, affordable housing, inflation and elective surgeries. Matt King said National has got to do better for the North and that he will “do his utmost to keep us on the radar.” Willow-Jean Prime said that “the number one issue people are raising with me is homelessness,” and Labour pledges to build new homes, stop foreign speculators buying, and to stop selling state homes. With water tax, she said that they will come up with something fair — it only concerns intense dairy farming, not

smaller farms and that they recognise how urban pollution contributes. Winston Peters compared most of the five issues to how they were in the ‘old days’, saying that what’s going on today is “balderdash — a catastrophe.” He also said that “mass immigration driving down wages is the guideline for what you get on super,” and “we’re going to bring in the new generation gold card the first chance we get after this election.” Peter Hughes spoke last. “Since when has education, housing and health been a market — a market that we just sell to the highest bidder? “We have to change this and get back some real values, like putting people first.” He also spoke on the importance of dealing with climate change. 

Road Spraying Broadspectrum NZ Ltd, Kaipara Branch is due to commence their full network round of glyphosate roadside vegetation spraying.

Notes for Drivers on Unsealed Roads

Unsealed roads require regular laying of maintenance aggregate. If tyres are low, road users can run the risk of punctures on freshly laid metal. This larger material is particularly prone to puncturing worn tyres, but is a necessary requirement during the winter months to ensure the roads are still safely traversable. Please take caution when travelling on freshly laid aggregate, and check the condition of your tyres — especially if you live on the unsealed network.

• Water table restoration – Neck, Redhill, Keer, Gallie, Gallie Branch, Oparakau and Tana Roads • Heavy Metal Strengthening – Pouto RoadMechanised • Tree Pruning – Throughout the Pouto Peninsula • Culverts – Pukehuia, Curnow, Sandy Beach, Heatley and Te Kowhai

Loving local life u by Anna Harding

New residents Donna and Craig Morison have been in the Kaipara for almost two years now and they are loving the relaxed pace of local life.

p Donna and Craig Morison have been in the Kaipara for almost two years

Donna grew up in Lower Hutt and has spent the last 12 years working as a probation officer. Craig has had a varied career spanning being a hospital orderly to furniture assembling and manufacturing. The couple married in 2011 and after living in the Wairarapa and a short stint in Rotorua, they moved to Dargaville in December 2015. “We were looking for an area similar to the Wairarapa -- smaller towns where people care about each other. I got offered a job in Dargaville and the first time we both visited Northland was the

day we drove up from Rotorua for my job interview in Whangarei. We drove back through Dargaville and loved the old villas and the feel of the place,” said Donna. Donna is a work broker for Work and Income, and Craig commutes to Maungaturoto and works as a furniture polisher for Lonsdale New Zealand. “We are loving Dargaville, it really has everything we need. “There’s heaps to do, we love the beach, people are friendly, and it’s dog friendly as we have five cats and six dogs.” said Donna. 

Regional council files for appeal u by Anna Harding

The Northland Regional Council is seeking an urgent hearing to appeal against the High Court decision that it collected invalid rates and penalties from Kaipara ratepayers between the years 2011/12 to 2015/16. The appeal also questions the court’s earlier related decision around how NRC set it’s due dates and collection arrangements for rate payments within the Kaipara district. Council chairman Bill Shepherd said the High Court noted that NRC acted in good faith, with the judge saying that they “may have fallen victim to legislation that was less precise than it needed to be.” Referring to the years at the centre of the case, Mr Shepherd said that ratepayers can be assured “our council has not acted irresponsibly or blatantly flouted the law. “We have arranged the collection of our rates by the Kaipara, Whangarei and Far North District Councils using standard sector practice in the interests of saving our ratepayers the additional cost of maintaining a separate rates collection department within our council.” The council will also approach the Depar tment of Internal Affairs asking it to clarify the section in the Rating Act, covering rates collection arrangements.

p Northland Regional Council chairman Bill Shepherd

Initial estimates of the appeal cost to NRC are $170,000–190,000, but the council feels the issues and precedent at stake are too important not to appeal. The council’s appeals could potentially be heard before a three-member bench of the Court of Appeal within three to five months; much less than the nine to 12 months likely under a standard appeal. 

Fitness classes under the banner ‘Healthier Fitter Stronger Northern Wairoa’, have begun in Dargaville, hosted by Marion Te Whiu and Regan Walters.

p People at the ‘Healthier Fitter Stronger Northern Wairoa’ open day, trying out the facilities and short classes

p Fiona Melville with daughters Chloe on the left and Amy right was the winner of the Te Roroa grocery trolley which was promoted during Adult Learners Week and Whanau Day. Fiona guessed the price of the groceries in the trolley at $144.00 and the total was $144.23. Tutor and promotions and social media coordinator Ashlee Wati said the day was made possible thanks to their sponsors.

“A cousin of mine had the idea first, Ebony McKendry, she’s one of our coaches. We just wanted a place to work out ourselves and I feel there’s a calling for it after talking to people,” said Regan. “We have a small time-table for now, but if there’s a demand for extra time slots we’ll look into it. We want to get established first and move with the community,” said Marion. So far they have six classes a day, week days. Each class is an hour long and the morning ones start at 5.30am, 6.30am and 9am. Evening classes start at 3.40pm, 5.30pm and 6.30pm. These include special classes

for mothers, children and teens. “We do a full body, high intensity workout. It’s varied training, different from day-to-day. “You don’t have to look a certain way to be healthy. We want to promote consistency to training, and to being healthier, fitter and stronger,” said Regan. “My goal for this would be to just have an average Joe like myself working out and forgetting what my exterior looks like but knowing that my interior is healthy,” said Marion. ‘Healthier Fitter Stronger Northern Wairoa’ is at 101 River road Dargaville. As we’ve seen, the property market in the Kaipara is riding high, with plenty of interest from both local and out-of-region buyers motivated by both the natural beauty of this part of the country, our wealth of public amenities and our proximity to Auckland. With so many folks looking to live here — and especially those who want to retire here — what is the role of the real estate professional in making sure both buying, selling and investing is a smooth process? We asked one of the busiest — and longest established — local Real Estate companies in the region, First National Roper and Jones — to fill us in on how things have changed over the years, and what remains evergreen in this multi-faceted business. professional understands both the needs and desires of the buyer and the seller, and works as an intermediary to ensure all parties are happy with their experience. It all begins with an honest market appraisal — something which requires a history and deep knowledge of trends and prices in the local area, as well as an insight into what buyers want. By taking an honest look at the positives — which can include everything from proximity to schools and shops, views, recent renovations and aspects of design, among others — your agent can suggest an achievable price, as well as advising on the best way to sell. As a buyer, a real estate agent is your guide to all the many and varied properties on offer. Ready to meet the market u by Andy Bryenton

Spring is here and summer is hot on its heels, heralding what all signs indicate will be a big season for property in the Kaipara. That means there are many people looking to buy here, and many locals will be weighing up their options to sell. We asked Jean Johnson of Dargaville’s Ray White Jean Johnson Realty, for some tips to help prospective sellers present an attractive ‘must buy’ home. Many people spend large sums on renovations in the lead-up to selling their home, and sometimes this is necessary — worn and faded carpets, dated bathrooms and kitchens and critical flaws like leaks and draughts can be real turn-offs. But the important thing to keep in mind is that there’s such a thing as too much — will you recoup your expenses at sale time? Sometimes, once your homes is weathertight and healthy, aesthetic concerns are best left to the buyer. Their tastes may vary from yours, after all. Simple things can make all the difference, on the other hand, and are sometimes forgotten. Buyers all have different needs — they may want to be close to schools or to their new job. They may want sea views or a little lifestyle block of land. But beyond this, they want a house that they feel could become their home. This doesn’t necessarily mean a top-flight new kitchen or a designer bathroom — but it does mean tidy presentation. A

spring clean can make all the difference — removing cobwebs, water blasting steps and paths, cleaning out the gutters and mowing the lawns presents a picture of a well-loved home. That’s why real estate professionals often ‘stage’ a home for photographs and open home viewings, presenting the space in its best possible light. To this end, clean and tidy means much more than ultra-modern. A lot of recent buyers in the region are coming to the market having sold their homes in the big city, and will have definite ideas about the right kitchen design, the perfect living area or bathroom. Buzzwords in the market today include those which have become election issues — good insulation, good ventilation, lack of condensation and mould in wet areas, and a good source of heat like a modern fireplace or heat pump. Beyond these, it’s all about what the buyer wants. Are they first home buyers, retirees, investors? Do they have pets, children,

trust to display your home to the right people. After all, matching the right home to the right buyer is what they do, all day every day. 

Three decades of mowing precision u by Andy Bryenton

When Husqvarna approached the drawing board in 1987 to develop a brand new concept in mowing, their inspiration came from customer’s feedback. How can we turn ‘on a dime’ to tackle tight spots, even with a big ride-on mower? How can we follow the contours of the ground and let the driver see exactly what he’s cutting? The answer came from a panel of engineers, but you can see one of the obvious inspirations in the design of the Husqvarna Rider series, which turns 30 this month. Those triple blade cutting heads out front, all mounted on a suspension-loaded carrier? This machine has the look and the precision of a men’s electric shaver, another

device designed to clear away unwanted overgrowth for a neat, clean finish. Another inspiration was surely the construction industry. Placing the engine in its own pod to the rear, then articulating the centre or ‘waist’ of the machine has long been a trick for big earthmovers to enable even multi-ton machines to turn in a small radius. chief designer says he saw this first on a child’s toy of a tractor-harvester. By applying this design to a mower, Husqvarna made it possible to turn in the length of the machine itself. And with the cutting deck out front, suspended where it can be seen and equipped with guide wheels, the operator can spot exactly where the blades are going, unlike on a conventional lawn tractor. An added bonus of this design is the ease with which the whole blade carrier can be popped up and out to get hosed down after use. automatic transmission have been factored in, making this one of the most stable, comfortable ways to mow a large area of grass. Lifestyle block owners especially have taken to the ease of operation afforded by the Rider series — a big back yard with its ornamental trees, benches, barbecue areas and other obstacles is very different from a football field or a paddock, and it’s a kind of terrain where that turning precision shines through. Three decades on, Husqvarna still set the benchmark for innovative front-mount mowing. And they’re even developing entirely electric models for the future. 

Go large for outdoor adventures u by Andy Bryenton

There’s a lot to pack into a Kiwi summer — and despite the currently inclement weather, there’s a long, hot one on the way. That means DIY projects and camping trips, towing the boat or the caravan for weekends away, hitting the beach for some angling action or possibly even taking the quad or dirt bike out for a blast. That sounds like the perfect job for a powerful ute — one which ticks all the boxes of power and performance. But is it possible to balance the grunt needed to really get out into nature with an emissions standard that will keep our wild spaces clean and green? The answer is a definitive ‘yes’ from Isuzu, who have enjoyed a successful year in 2017 with the introduction of the nextgeneration DMax. Now meeting strict Euro 5 emissions standards, a clever feat of engineering means that this powerful light commercial keeps it’s potent 3 litre turbo diesel under the hood, while allover revamps to fine details such as instruments and exterior styling give the DMax a refined new look. We’ve said it before — take a closer look at the DMax’s power plant and you’ll realise that you’re dealing with a proper truck motor, not a unit lifted from a standard sedan or wagon. To meet those cleaner emissions, Isuzu integrated a new diesel particulate diffuser system and exhaust recirculation technology

into their 3.0 litre engine design, while also improving the turbocharger, pistons and fuel injection systems. This adds up to not just a cleaner ride, but also a handy 50 newton-metres of extra torque. That, in turn, gives the DMax serious pulling power whether for work or play. Going from the construction site to the farm and then on to tow all those summer toys will be no problem for a machine which produces 420Nm at just 2200 rpm. Both manual and auto gearboxes have been upgraded to six speed, helping deliver that power smoothly and with focus. As the beach and the open highway call, it’s a good time to take a look at a ute that has never been afraid of hard work, but which is also the perfect companion for recreation. Isuzu’s reputation for building them tough and reliable stretches beyond the traditional image of the utility truck as the primary tool and mobile office of the hard-working tradesman and farmer. It’s also a guarantee of safer, more actionpacked holidays for the family. 

p More power where it counts — the next-gen Isuzu DMax has even more torque and runs cleaner at Euro 5 spec

LAMBLY BUILD & MAINTENANCE SERVICES

I don’t hold a Q.B.E Honour but after 45 years you could say “I’m qualified by experience”

After forty five years in earthworks and land drainage, time in the field teaches you an awful lot. Apart from the fact you do learn a lot there is only one way to do a job and that’s “the right way”. You also learn the science behind why issues occur in the first place. This time of the year I spend a lot of time rebuilding driveways fast becoming impossible as the winter months set in. Your drive gets soft, the rain runs down the wheel tracks washing away what metal you have left and of course those damn potholes. Today my choice of subject to those who are interested is the science as to how and why your drive or indeed any council road grows potholes. The long and short of it is if any part of a road or drive is flat it will pothole as the rainwater no longer has gravity to drain it away. Now the science of how a pot hole is born. Well it’s not in a hospital but it does go back to the factory where your tyre was designed and made. The factory design of your tyre tread is designed to do two things, hang onto the road and shed water from the road surface as it passes over

it in wet conditions. In wet conditions that fancy tread not only sheds water but grit and gravel from the metal road surface as well. Once a stone has been ejected from the road surface it leaves a hole filling with water. Each time a vehicle tyre passes over the same water filled hole the process is repeated over and over with more and more metal ejected till a pothole is born. Now the pothole is born it learns it’s first word “hydraulicking”. As the pothole grows in size it soon has it’s first meal “your vehicle tyre”. When your tyre punches into the water filled pothole it hydraulics out the water, taking with it even the road base metals. How to fix that pothole often goes beyond just filling the hole with metal. “No drive or roading system should ever be flat”, your land, roading and drainage systems are your assets and should be looked after. The right shape is everything. If you the reader, have a situation you would like to learn the science of, be it land or water, you are welcome to approach myself with whatever needs that fix it factor. So put me to the test, my advice is free and my work guaranteed.

We have the expertise: • Farm drainage, river & floodgate work, stopbank build & maintenance. • Driveway establishment or restoration, water tabling, metal rolling & site works. • Hole boring – all applications, even under existing driveways for culverts or services.

EARTHWORKS – It’s not just a job, it’s a passion! Let me put my experience to work to achieve your vision!

We have the equipment: • 3½ tonne digger • 14 tonne standard reach digger • 14 tonne 15m super reach machine with custom “0.800 wide” tracks specially moulded to minimise ground pressure & pasture disturbance • 8 tonne tip truck. Specially chosen to spread metal with less wastage, more driveway or your money • 4 tonne vibrating roller, a must when building driveways. Give your vehicle more traction on hills & increase your driveways lifespan.

Open Home – 24th September Sunday at 1pm to 1.30pm Great location, this home may look small on the outside, but much like that famous police box, you find out that it’s quite spacious on the inside (158m2). Tastefully renovated and expanded to accommodate the family. New kitchen and bathroom. Two reasonably sized bedrooms situated to the side of the lounge and a spacious master bedroom to the side of the kitchen. Double garaging (could turn this into a man cave)... $435,000

Five bedroom home elevated with fantastic ocean views and beautiful sunsets. Not far to the Kai Iwi Lakes and Omamari beach. Built around 2009 with quality bathrooms, internal access, three car garaging and a nice indoor/outdoor vibe. Relax and have all the stress taken away on this beautiful property. Situated off the road with 1.56ha land. A must consider! Would make a wonderful retirement retreat.

Two bedrooms, large family room, separate spa room, large extra building suitable for sleep-out, gas hob and electric oven, large full length decking capturing wide views. The roof is only two years old, garage and a workshop, separate carport. Kellys Bay is a small rural seaside area with a stunningly beautiful beach, great fishing, unlike other beaches in the area it is quite sheltered and shallow, good for all types of fishing, there is a boat ramp there for your use. Oysters on the rocks, views of the Kaipara Harbour, great family getaway.
