Calling for clarity u by Ayla Miller

Fire brigades around the Kaipara District are calling for residents to ensure their Rural Address Property Identification, known as RAPID numbers, are clearly visible from the road in both directions.

Tinopai chief fire officer Allan Crabb says the numbers in Tinopai are displayed for incoming traffic and posties rather than for outgoing traffic like the fire trucks. “They are there to suit the postie but because we are coming from the other direction we have to drive past the letter box to see the RAPID number. “Over time some have either fallen off or got broken and they are just not there any more.” He urges people to put their rapid numbers on both sides of their letter boxes or display it clearly so it can be seen from the road. The RAPID system is a numbering system for rural properties in New Zealand and signals the distance to a property entrance from a reference point, usually the beginning of the road on which it is located. Emergency Services have access to this information to ensure faster response times. Although some of the brigades do use Global Positioning Systems, they still require a number to direct them to a property and a reliable service. Dargaville senior firefighter Penny Searle says her brigade also have difficulties with the RAPID numbers. “We have a lot of trouble with the old red RAPID numbers. The majority of the time there are just white signs with no numbers on them because the red has faded off.

p Fireman Gregg Dunn points out a correctly displayed RAPID number

“We very rarely use our GPS because in some places there is no service, like most of the way down by Pouto and past Kaihu, so GPS is null and void.” The Te Kopuru brigade have an overlapping area with Dargaville meaning they have the same problems. Ms Searle says the blue Kaipara District Council RAPID numbers are ideal, provided they are displayed properly. “They have a reflective piece which is really good for us at night. Even if people just have a spray painted number

on the fence or a number on their letter box it helps.” Other emergency services have a similar plea with St John district operation manager Tony Devanney also saying ambulance drivers rely on these numbers for efficient responses. “It’s hard to quickly identify rural properties and the rapid numbers are the perfect way. “It’s reflective and it’s the same everywhere. If everyone had them it would save a lot of delays.” ¢

p The Wellsford School kapa haka groups performed alongside 13 other schools at the Kaipara Kapa Haka festival last Saturday held at Rodney College. “The junior group got things off to a great start, followed by the seniors who performed many new waiata — songs — for this year’s festival. The group was tutored by Casey Wikiriwhi-Heta, Viv Te Haara and Lisa Dewes, with lots of help on the day from parent volunteers. When both groups of more than 60 pupils were on stage together at the end, it was clear that Kapa Haka is very important to the school,” said principal Dave Bradley.

Caring for Northland

Team spirit earns silverware

The annual fundraising appeal for Northland Emergency Services Trust, run by Northpower and Top Energy, is underway.

u by Ayla Miller

The Northern Wairoa Football Senior Men’s team have returned home victorious with the Stafford Choat plate, the team’s first piece of silverware since 1985.

p NEST’s Helimed 2 seen with Helimed 1 in the foreground on top of the Auckland Hospital roof

Northpower and Top Energy have been on board as principal sponsors since NEST’s inception over 25 years ago and each year they match public donations from the appeal dollar for dollar, up to $150,000. The Northland Emergency Services Trust is the first rescue helicopter operation in New Zealand to get approval to undertake maintenance on its own aircraft. NEST now carry out their own specialist work needed on its fleet of three Sikorsky S-76 helicopters following its authorisation as a Part 145 certified operation from the Civil Aviation Authority and funds raised will assist this. “It’s already the busiest rescue helicopter service in New Zealand, having carried more than 17,000 patients since starting in 1988,” said NEST chief executive Pete Turnbull.

NEST operates three Sikorsky S-76A rescue helicopters, two of which are stationed in Whangarei and one at the North Shore aerodrome. “NEST recently secured funding to update Helimed 2, which was previously black, to the same colour scheme as its original Sikorsky — Helimed 1,” says NEST ambassador Anthony Blundell. “Now the paint job is complete, Helimed 2 is back in operation.” This year if you donate $5 or more you will be in to win one of 30 rides in one of the Electricity Rescue Helicopters. To donate, return your freepost official donation envelope sent out to all Northland homes or go to any ASB Branch or by internet banking donation to ERH Appeal — ASB — 12-31060046000-00 or go to givealittle.co.nz and search Northland Electricity Rescue Helicopters Annual Appeal 2015. ¢

The team played against Tikipunga Development M3 at Toll Stadium, Whangarei on September 12 and celebrated their win at their prize giving held at the Dargaville Bridge Club that evening. “In the second half we were attacking and playing good football and then in the very last minute we had a free kick and Evan Montgomery scored the winning goal,” says captain Glenn Mariscal. “We were very pleased because it has been a long time since the last time the team has won any silverware.”

Club president Dharmendra Kumar says he is extremely proud of the team. “We are hoping to follow this with the same feat again, maybe get into the bowl or cup finals next year. “The prize giving was a great night. We ended up with close to 85 of our members and families and it was very well catered for by Joe’s Home Cooking.” The next thing on the club’s calendar will be the past versus present game where old members dust off their boots for a game against the newcomers in October which will end the season. ¢

Combining strength

Store hits the right notes

u by Ann Morgan

He might have only moved next door, but Cicada Music owner-operator Kerri Russell says his new premises in the old Distinction Jewellers store on Victoria Street, Dargaville will make a world of difference.

Kaipara Abuse Prevention Inc and the Rapid Relief Team combined their efforts and provided a free lunch for some Kaipara families.

p The Rapid Relief Team with KAP board members and staff

RRT is a global non profit organisation which is in its infant stages in the Kaipara and its volunteers are members of the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church. “Our aim for this lunch was to give some of those families in need a break and to show we are a caring community, with compassion and support,” said RRT spokesperson Matt Boakes. “The KAP staff often meet with their families during challenging times however this lunch gave them an opportunity to sit with their clients in a relaxed atmosphere. “They were able to mix on a more personal level whilst having a meal. We partner with community agencies and this event may seem small and insignificant, but is actually very important for people who utilise

services such as KAP, so they see the community cares.” Simone Matthews from KAP said they enjoyed being able to partner with RRT. “We were extremely grateful to be approached by them and to be able to work collaboratively. It was a nice way to help make the families feel special, that is really important to us and we are looking forward to more events in the future. “RRT members entertained the children, provided lunch and cleaned up later, and this was very much appreciated by all involved.” The Rapid Relief Team will be helping with the Kerikeri Half Marathon in November, providing refreshments. Their goal is to assist with relief when possible in events or situations that a helping hand is needed. ¢

NOW OPEN! Dargaville’s new home of music, creativity and fun!

p Kerri Russell has moved his business next door and is trading under the name Cicada Music

After eight years operating under the name Soundwaves in the shop next to Empire Luncheonette, Kerri decided it was time to ‘shape up or ship out’. When the shop next door became available he jumped at the chance to stretch his legs and has been enjoying having more room to breathe. “It’s a much nicer shop. There is a bigger display area, more shelving, lighting and space.” An eye-catching window display has also been attracting new clientele. “People have been commenting on it and we have been getting different people poking their head through the door.” Along with this, Kerri believes it is the expertise and personal service

aspect that sets him apart from the rest. “A lot of people are buying things online so the ability to tailor a product and listen to what people need and to be able to recommend something is a point of difference. Here you can get your instrument serviced and repaired locally.” As well as keeping his usual range of musical instruments and accessories the store will now stock a range of children’s wooden toys. “We have a cheaper range that is quite nice with a dozen different toys and are an outlet for a lady in Kaeo who makes solid pine wooden toys to order.” The store is also paying tribute to its history as a jewellers with a range of earrings and necklaces. ¢

Spring art trail biggest yet u by Ayla Miller

With 21 venues and over 50 artists, art enthusiasts will have a spring in their step during the Mangawhai Artists Inc bi-annual art trail to be held over the weekend of September 26 and 27. This year the trail will include a new exhibition held at the Smashed Pipi Gallery displaying works from the Gilmore Brown Kaipara Art awards. Mangawhai Artists Inc past president and art trail co-ordinator Jeanette Vickers says this will be a huge event for the group and for Mangawhai. “This is the monster of art trail for us. There are about five or six new artists. It’s the biggest one we have ever run.” Jeanette says she enjoys meeting others who appreciate art over the weekend. “That first knock on the door on Saturday morning is such a buzz. We get over 400 visitors through over the weekend. “It’s been eight weeks working flat out to get this up and running. I’m looking forward to seeing the work at the Smashed Pipi gallery and also seeing the new venues especially the Brierly’s on Mangawhai/Wellsford Road. It is a chance to see local artists and view such a variety of styles and art. Painting now is not just oils, it’s acrylics and acrylic inks. The variety is just huge now. There is photography, wood cuts, ceramics as well as a couple of retail outlets and lots more. “Last year we had people from all over the country booking accommodation in Mangawhai especially for the art trail.” The venues will be open from 10am until 5pm and maps can either be downloaded from www.mangawhaiartists. co.nz or picked up from Smashed Pipi Gallery, Mangawhai Information Centre, Mangawhai Books and Gifts at 12 Wood Street or Bammas at 43 Moir Street. ¢

Partners planting Paparoa The mud and a bit of rain were the ideal conditions for a mass planting at Paparoa when Progressive Paparoa community volunteers partnered with the Kaipara District Council to clean up the riverbank. “It is a challenging site with its steep slope and river erosion issues but in time it will make a nice green belt from the Landing to the Village Green,” said KDC Parks Officer Adrian Birkbeck. “Not only that, we cleaned out a huge amount of rubbish that people had dumped there, making it an eyesore rather than the attractive environment it should be.” “Jacqueline Knight is a landscape designer and contributed a design at no charge, and Fulton Hogan staff added their muscle power to the effort as well as controlling traffic. Tsunami systems testing Frights, thrills and family fun u by Andy Bryenton

u by Ann Morgan

The 150-plus Northland tsunami sirens, including Mangawhai’s nine and Ruawai’s four, will be tested on Sunday September 27 as part of regular twice-yearly checks to ensure they’re all working correctly. “When a natural disaster happens, people are known to say nothing will happen. Think about overseas, Japan, Christchurch, and the most recent Chile earthquake. Things do happen and we need to be prepared,” said a Kaipara District Council spokesperson. “Have your ‘get ready — get through’ packs organised and think about what you would do and where your family will go. The Chile earthquake is not here but it could just as easily be here, the tsunami could have been bigger.” Victoria Randall, spokesperson for the Northland Civil Defence Emergency Management Group says “Sirens around the region will sound twice — firstly at 9.20am for 10 minutes and again at 10am for just 30 seconds.” Civil Defence community groups or local council staff will monitor the sirens at these times, reporting any faults for repair. The siren network has been set up to alert coastal communities in the event of a tsunami warning. The shoebox-sized

units, each with its own siren, flashing light and distinctive blue and yellow Civil Defence logo, are attached to power poles in some communities along the coast. The sirens are designed to alert people that they need to seek further information about potential tsunami risks from official sources,” said Ms Randall. Sources can include tv, radio or the Civil Defence website. Recognising natural warnings from the surrounding environment is important. Signs are earthquakes, unusual sea behaviour including a sudden sea level fall or rise, and loud and unusual sea noises, particularly roaring like a jet engine. “These may be the only warning signs from a nearby-generated tsunami as it may arrive as quickly as 70 minutes after a major earthquake and there may not be time for an official Civil Defence notification.” Information about Civil Defence is available from www.nrc.govt. nz/civildefence or facebook.com/ civildefencenorthland.

Trolley derby workshop Subcommittee assists store owners Join The Kauri Museum’s own engineering experts in creating a masterpiece worthy of entry into the first Settlers Day Trolley Derby in a one-day workshop these school holidays.

In the mid-20th-century, children were often seen racing trolleys or go-carts. They were a common sight across New Zealand. Trolleys were a childhood icon with most being homemade from old wood or boxes and hessian sacks with the wheels often salvaged from old prams. The children would gather together to make their creations and then have the pleasure of racing each other, along streets and down hills. These school holidays children can learn how to construct a racing machine and take home plans to be able to construct their own. “Children will follow a construction plan from start to finish to help build p One of the Kauri Museum volunteers Bill Poyner in the driver’s seat, getting ready for the derby a standard trolley cart, taking home inspiration and ideas for Wednesday September 30 and then creating their own trolley derby entries. again on Wednesday October 7. Spring chores made easy

u by Andy Bryenton

u by Andy Bryenton

With summer just around the corner, it’s time to consider that adventurous step you may have been putting off for years.

With spring well and truly here, lawns and gardens are experiencing a surge of seasonal growth. Husqvarna have been ahead of this game for decades, and their range of power equipment for the lifestyle block owner or more substantial home gardener has been boosted and improved for 2015 to include some smart, time saving tech. All benefit from the latest smoothstarting, lightweight engine tech, and all, unlike many of the rusted relics unearthed from garden sheds this time of year, are built to start first time! The 327he4x pole pruner allows easy access to hanging branches, with professional-grade power and an engine perfectly counterbalanced for precise, surgical cutting. A long pruner bar with an adjustable head makes topping hedges and even engaging in some topiary light work. Paired up with the 226hd, this combo is a must for those with sheltering hedges, shrubbery and leafy trees, cutting a riot of Spring growth down to size. The 525 trimmer, on the other hand, works closer to the ground,

Each summer, thousands of Kiwi motorcyclists hit the road, enjoying some of the finest touring scenery in the world from the saddle. Economical, exciting, and a great way to meet and spend time with mates, motorcycling spans the spectrum from adventure sport to practical commuting. It’s never been easier to get on two wheels, with the introduction of new rules putting full-sized machines in reach of learner riders. Take for example the Benelli BN600. A full-blooded Italian sports bike, styled by the same nation which brought us the Lamborghini and Ferrari, and providing

600cc of on-road freedom. With a full suite of modern safety features backing up that torquey four pot mill, Benelli’s latest is not just a slice of high-velocity eye candy, it’s also a great way to step up and get that learner’s licence. Previously limited to 250cc, learners today can take advantage of bikes like the BN600 to match their size and height, for a safer, more confident introduction into what is sure to be a lifelong passion. The Benelli may be advanced, sitting at the cutting edge of Euro sports bike tech, but it’s also very affordable, proving a very strong competitor against the Japanese. ¢

Your Journey to Building or Renovating ADVERTORIAL

Establishing a truly great outdoors Colin and Julie, the new team behind Mangawhai Landscape Supplies, are fulfilling a two-decadelong dream by moving to the northeast coast for good.

Colin’s background in sheet metal fabrication has combined with an artistic talent to lead him into creating sculpture, but his dayto-day business involved revolutionising the application of artificial turf for sporting venues. Julie comes from a business background, with experience working in strategy and communications for some very big names indeed, from the world of professional sports to the world of information technology. Now the parents of two have thrown their considerable energy into a new project, purchasing what was once MPL in Mangawhai, and transforming the business into a new and scenic form. Mangawhai Landscape Supplies is now open, with fresh ideas ready for Spring, and some unexpected inspirations too. Alongside everything you need to get growing, visitors will find native plants from local growers Rural Design & Organic herbs, and vegetable seedlings from local growers.

Big or small, Spring is the perfect time to break ground on your new landscaping project

The extensive re-working of the yard provides it own inspiration as well, showcasing just what can be done with a modern garden, the right gear and the right advice. A hot item for 2015 is a full kitset pizza oven from designers OPO, ready for some serious outdoor entertaining. In every way possible, Colin and Julie have tried to keep their content local, supporting local industries. They’re also supporting organic produce, with Bio Certified Organic Compost, heirloom seedlings and natives adding to the modern trend toward ecological sustainability. The new

Mangawhai Landscape Supplies team have big plans for the future, not just in terms of expanding their range and their displays, but also in terms of putting Mangawhai on the map for outdoor artworks — a natural progression to Colin’s artistic flare with the welding torch! Expect more surprises, too, for as Julie says — “We look forward to partnering with some of the local business and community groups to help them and we’re always open to unique and different ideas for use of the property. Just because we sell Landscape Supplies doesn’t mean that’s all it needs to be.”

Your Journey to Building or Renovating

The icing on the cake u by Andy Bryenton

It’s been a long and interesting journey from dreams and schemes to the finishing touches of your build or renovation. Over the last three weeks we have looked at all the aspects of making your mark on a character home — now we turn to the detailing that makes it complete. Never is this more important than in the surrounds of your home. Living, as we do in the wide-open spaces of the Kaipara, the ability to enjoy an outdoor lifestyle is paramount, but it comes with its own challenges and opportunities not available to high-density urban dwellers. It’s all fine and good to have four or five thoroughly organic acres with trees and hedges, gardens and patios — but keeping it all looking trim and tidy can become a herculean task. That is, unless you bring in the professionals. Some bigger jobs, such as major tree surgery, are best left to those with the tools and the technique to safely drop that multi-ton macrocarpa away from the verandah! Others benefit from a designer’s eye, such as planning a new landscaping direction. We have all watched the results, on television shows such as Grand Designs, of those who think that they too, can get behind the controls of a digger and create an ornamental lake. That being said, there is much which can be achieved in the backyard

wilderness with a little knowledge and lot of willpower. Especially complimentary to your new build is sure to be a thriving kitchen garden, providing literally hundreds of dollars worth of organic veg each season. Make room, too, for the latest in outdoor entertainment trends — an outdoor pizza oven to add to your barbecue ‘man zone’. With your home

Welcome to Mangawhai ADVERTORIAL

Little firecracker a lifestyle block hero Mahindra’s range of big, powerful tractors are really making an impression in New Zealand, offering toughness that’s built to tackle the challenging demands of the Indian subcontinent alongside big value-for-money features. While this is great for farmers and contractors — who can rest assured that after a punishing tour of duty in India, reliability issues are well and truly shaken down — Mahindra are also famous for their smaller tractors too. Coming from a country where many farms are isolated family smallholdings, this has been a key market for the world’s biggest diesel engine manufacturer, and it’s opened a surprising niche here in New Zealand too. block owners have, until now, been forced to make a tough call. Buy a ‘lawn tractor’ for slashing and mowing, adding on a sprayer — or save those pennies for a second hand, full sized machine that may be too large to be practical on small acreage. Then there is the need to fulfil a huge range of little tasks such as fencing and ditch digging, often meaning a call to the local contractors. Now, Mahindra have unleashed their tiny but mighty eMax series for just this niche. These small tractors are a veritable rolling Swiss army knife, able to pack attachments usually only found on their bigger rivals. The eMax 25 is a perfect example. Packing a frugal 3 cylinder diesel, this machine has more than enough get up and go to handle rural chores. Equipped with a scoop bucket up front, it excels at feeding stock, shifting overburden or shovelling gravel and dirt. But

Welcome to Mangawhai Surf adventures with Aotearoa u by Ann Morgan

Aotearoa Surf School in Mangawhai which was established in 2003 now has a new owner. Che Burnett, who lives in Te Arai, has taken over from the Glover family. Che says he is living the coastal dream after years of international travel and surfing and being based in Te Arai they are the ‘go to’ when it comes to adventure surf, boarding and kayaks. “We are the only current surf school in the area that provides paddle boards, lessons and hire in conjunction with kayaks, and we are also the only Surfing New Zealand approved surf school in the Mangawhai — Te Arai area. “Paddle boarding was cultivated thousands of years ago in Peru and was initially reported by James Cook in the 1779 in Hawaii, as the Hawaiian people surfed these boards. It has grown very popular worldwide and is rapidly expanding as a sport. We have a fleet of ten premium paddle boards and have already done dozens of lessons and tours in the past month.” They take groups of up to five at a time and have a ratio of one coach to five people with a one-hour paddle lesson which they launch from the Mangawhai Tavern who are their official partner. Inflatable life vests are supplied and their coaches are all Surfing NZ qualified. “What I like the best about my career is being outside and the enjoyment that other people get, they walk away with a

Softball returns u by Ann Morgan

A group have banded together to bring the sport of softball back to Dargaville and would like others interested in the game to join them with the goal of competing in the World Masters Competition 2017. Karen Smith and Pete Van De Weerd along with Ken and Ngaire Takarua are all ex softball players and Ngaire is also an experienced scorer. “Ken has been coaching for many years and will be our coach,” said Karen. “At the moment there are only three teams from the North and we hope to join them for the softball season starting Saturday October 17 in Kaikohe. We would like to be fielding at least one men’s and one women’s team. It would

be great to have surrounding towns organise teams as well so that we can create a local competition.” Karen has made enquiries with the Taitokerau Managers and Coaches group who are also trying to bring softball back to Northland. Currently they have received interest from Whatuwhiwhi, Taipa, Kerikeri/Paihia, Moerewa, Ahipara and now Dargaville. “Our aim is to also start a softball skills programme throughout schools

in the Kaipara area and we are looking for supporters and volunteers who are willing to help network, sponsor, coach and manage the future teams.”
